Demolition bid revised By Goya Dmytryshchak Newport’s iconic Masonic Hall may be torn down after a developer lodged plans to build a five storey, 22-dwelling apartment block. Trethowan Architecture applied to Hobsons Bay council to replace the building at the corner of Mason Street and Melbourne Road with an $8 million residential and retail development, including six shops at ground level. It’s the third time since 2011 the developer has lodged an application for the site. The latest application stated: “The existing building is a large (unused and derelict) former Freemasons Hall.” “The former Freemasons Hall is suffering from severe effects of concrete cancer, posing a significant threat to the use of the existing building. The first floor interior fabric of the temple has been stripped out so that only structural members remain.” A 2006 Hobsons Bay Heritage Study found Newport Masonic Temple, built in 1924-25, to be historically, socially and aesthetically significant. “This large stuccoed neo-Grecian style design is typical of Masonic hall architecture and is particularly well-preserved inside and out,” according to the Victorian Heritage Database report. In 2016, Trethowan Architecture proposed to demolish the hall for a four-storey development. The plan, which was met with strong community resistance and hundreds of submissions, was withdrawn before the council could make a decision. In 2013, the Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal upheld the council’s refusal to approve a plan by Trethowan Architecture to retain the hall’s facade and demolish the rest of the building. At the time, tribunal member Rachel Naylor said one would hope that an owner of a significant heritage building would seek to maintain it. She placed “limited weight” on heritage evidence from architect Bruce Trethowan, saying he was not an independent witness. Trethowan Architecture has been contacted.
Willy Congs in top innings Williamstown Congs Cricket Club is reaching out to past and present members for its 125th anniversary. The club started in 1893 when Reverend H. Jones, from the former Congregational Church in Stevedore Street, entered a team in the Williamstown Sunday School Trophy competition – now known as the Western Suburbs Churches and Community Cricket Association. The club’s red and white colours stem from the Reverend – the club’s first president – barracking for South Melbourne. These days, the club is one of Hobsons Bay’s most inclusive and holds bragging rights to being the first in the municipality to have a junior girls-only team playing in a girls-only competition. President Gary Griffin said Willy Congs’ “family club” ethos was re-enforced by expansion into girls’ and women’s cricket. “I joined Willy Congs as a 16 year old in 1980 and instantly fell in love with the club,” he said. “It had been around for around 90 years before I joined and I truly believe it’ll be around in another 90 years. “Not many clubs live to reach 125 years – this achievement is nothing short of extraordinary.” The club is seeking stories and memorabilia for its 125th anniversary celebration, particularly as much pre-1984 documentation was lost in a fire at the church. The milstone celebration will be held at Altona Bowls Club on August 25, with speakers including sports writer Ken Piesse and former Willy Congs junior Dean Russ, who went on to play for Victoria. Couple burned by Willow’s woes By Benjamin Millar What should be one of the happiest days of a West Footscray couple’s life has turned into their worst nightmare. Richard Macri and his fiancee Hannah have been planning to tie the knot and hold their reception at The Willows, one of Melbourne’s best-known wedding and reception venues. Yet their plans for a perfect day have been shattered by the St Kilda Road venue suddenly going into voluntary liquidation. The closure has left the pair and dozens of
other couples scrambling to find new venues and rearrange almost every element of their wedding day. Mr Macri feared they would never get back the $17,000 they transferred to secure their August wedding for 150 guests. He said he had paid for the wedding up front after a recent email from The Willows offered a discount for people who paid in full ahead of schedule. “We are pretty much in shock, it’s not easy saving all of this money,” he said. “We spoke to them on Wednesday about making the final

A $25 million “modest” upgrade has been flagged for Maribyrnong’s town hall. The redevelopment would be the single biggest ratepayer-funded project in the municipality in decades. A Town Hall Renewal business case, costing $177,000 to prepare, presented four scenarios to refurbish the Footscray Town Hall Precinct. These range from a $15.3 million basic upgrade to an $86 million complete rebuild. Footscray Town Hall was built in 1936, with major extensions and renovations carried out between 1984 and 1988. A report to be presented at last night’s ordinary meeting stated that the buildings were outdated and in poor condition. Councillors last year voted to endorse a business case to consider potential renewal options and their costs. Scenario 1, involving essential building compliance and end-of-life works, would cost an estimated $15.3 million. Scenario 2, a “modest upgrade”, would carry out these basic works as well as upgrade the town hall to improve community use, refurbish the customer service area and upgrade the office building for $25.4 million. Scenario 3, a “major upgrade” costing $36 million, would include these works and significantly extend the floor area. Scenario 4 would be a new build, but at $86 million was said to present “significant and unsustainable” costs. The report recommended scenario 2 as the preferred option, representing “the best long-term value for money”. The 2018-19 budget includes $2 million to prepare for the upgrade.
Wild about artist’s vision Yarraville artist Ilona Nelson is inviting art-lovers to join her for a walk on the wild side. Her long-term project This Wild Song is a celebration of female visual artists from across Australia through photographic portraits, interviews, exhibitions and events. Nelson wants the project, ultimately involving 100 artists from across Australia, to increase the visibility of female artists and
address gender equality in the arts. This Wild Song will form the basis of Nelson’s first major Melbourne exhibition, to be held at the Town Hall Gallery in Hawthorn from September 1 until October 21. The exhibition will consist of photographic portraits of 26 artists, including Indigo O’Rourke, Michelle Hamer, Erika Gofton and Polixeni Papapetrou, accompanied by an

Jack’s a tradie in waiting Newport’s Jack Lee is Australia’s best schoolboy carpenter – but he hasn’t yet nailed a job. The Bayside P-12 College year 12 student won gold at the WorldSkills Australia National Championships, the country’s biggest vocational education and excellence competition. He competed against finalists from four states to win the Vocational Education Training (VET) in Schools construction competition. “I’ve always built stuff,” Jack said. “I did mechanics for a bit and found I preferred carpentry. So, I started doing that and I was alright at it.” Jack said he hoped to line up a carpentry apprenticeship by the time he finishes school in six months, and he’s willing to work anywhere.
“I’m not fussed, I should have my licence in a week and a half,” he said. VET carpentry teacher Daniel Bonnici has taught Jack for the past three years in the college, which has built a reputation for producing good tradies. “Jack will finish his pre-apprenticeship in carpentry by the end of this year and then it’s a matter of finding an employer,” Mr Bonnici said. “He’s a good kid, he’s got very good skills … and he’ll make a very good apprentice.” Anyone interested in employing Jack can contact Mr Bonnici at Bayside P-12 College on 9391 6666. Brotherhood gets NDIS nod
By Goya Dmytryshchak Seaholme’s Linda and Len Findlay last week celebrated their 70th anniversary. Mr Findlay, 93, was born in Altona, while Mrs Findlay, 90, moved to the area at age three. Mrs Findlay said they both attended Altona Primary School. “We knew each other as kids, but Len being three years older I didn’t have much to do with him at school,” she said. “But his brother and I were in the same grade.” The two became a romantic couple during World War II. “Len was in the air force – he joined up when he was 18 and I was 15,” Mrs Findlay said. “I met him again on Newport station when he was on leave … there he was in his air force uniform looking very handsome and I thought, ‘Ooh, that’s Len Findlay’. We chatted on the train on the way home and he walked me home and that’s when the romance started.” They were married at Altona Baptist Church on June 19, 1948. After the war, Mr Findlay had his own business delivering ice in summer and wood in winter. “My father had started a woodyard before and he had gone for many years,” he said. “There was only one ice merchant here in those days, so we thought it was a good idea because the woodyard wasn’t very busy in the summer. To be the ice man, you were as busy as can be in the summer and not much in the winter, so we were able to help each other. The only refrigerators were in shops.” He made headlines – “Ice man in smash stays cool” – when a train struck his truck. When the demand for ice dried up, Mr Findlay went to work for Petroleum Refineries (now Mobil). Mrs Findlay (nee
The west has received its highly sought after NDIS local area coordinator (LAC). The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) last week announced the Brotherhood of St Laurence will deliver services in the Western Melbourne region from Carlton to Little River, and across the Brimbank and Melton region, from Sunshine to Melton. Local area coordination supports the implementation of the NDIS at a local community level, however a LAC had yet to be appointed to Brimbank. Last month Calwell MP Maria Vamvakinou raised a number of concerns about the assessment process for accessing the NDIS in federal Parliament and said an LAC was required. Brotherhood LAC manager Daniel Leighton said the announcement is significant for people with disability, their families and their carers living in the west. “Delivering Local Area Coordination speaks to the Brotherhood’s vision of connecting with and engaging in community,” he said. “In addition to supporting people with disability to access the NDIS, the Brotherhood will work in partnership with local councils and community groups to identify opportunities.” The NDIS will become available in the Western Melbourne and Brimbank and Melton regions from October 1, 2018, with LAC offices to open across Melbourne’s west.

Shorten move a poll prospect Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten could switch seats at the next election after a major redrawing of federal electorate boundaries triggered by rapid population growth in Melbourne’s west. The Australian Electoral Commission last week locked in a redistribution that moves a sizeable chunk of Maribyrnong into a new electorate known as Fraser, centred around Sunshine and named in honour of former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser. On current voting patterns, Fraser would be a safer Labor seat than Maribyrnong, making it a more attractive proposition for Mr Shorten as he eyes off the prime ministership. The new boundary lines also shift almost a third of voters in Gellibrand, held by Labor’s Tim Watts, into Maribyrnong or Fraser. The safe Labor seat sheds large swathes of Footscray, West Footscray and Maidstone, which are replaced by Laverton and Point Cook. While the Australian Electoral Commission rejected a proposal to change the name of Gellibrand to Cooper, to honour Aboriginal activist and leader William Cooper, it did adopt the name for the current seat of Batman in Melbourne’s inner north. Mr Watts said William Cooper’s legacy has inspired positive social change for indigenous communities in Melbourne’s west and throughout Australia. “I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to represent a seat named after a Footscray local and champion for indigenous rights, but I’m pleased that he will now have permanent recognition in our Parliament,” he said.

Footscray furniture stalwart Franco Cozzo has secured his ultimate “grand sale”. After half a century selling furniture from his Hopkins Street store, the renowned spruiker-turned-cult figure has sold his 1088-square-metre premises for a figure understood to be about $7 million. Title documents show a contract for sale has been entered into for the site with Derrimut-based developer Pelligra Group. While Mr Cozzo has released a video saying he would be staying put for now, he did not deny the site had been sold. He is expected to continue trading for the next two or three years while Pelligra Group secures planning permits to redevelop the site, zoned to allow redevelopment of up to 10 storeys. Mr Cozzo’s store has long been a Footscray landmark. After arriving from Italy on Australia Day 1956, Mr Cozzo soon went into partnership in a furniture business in Collingwood and later opened his own stores in North Melbourne, Brunswick and Footscray. Spoken in English, Italian and Greek, his television commercials made him a household name. He literally became larger than life when a mural of him with his arms outstretched was painted on the side wall of his store in 2015. Mr Cozzo, 82, said at the time of first putting the property on the market in 2014 that it was time to slow down. “The people of Footscray have given me great support for many years,” he told Star Weekly. “I’ve been part of the community and Footscray has been part of me, but it’s time to relax a little more.’’ The Pelligra Group was contacted for comment.

Under the musical moniker Dot.AY, Yabsley has forged a reputation as one of the globe’s leading exponents of the genre, pushing the technical and sound limits of the humble gaming machine. Yabsley will be squeezing as much knowledge as he can into workshops he is leading as part of CHANGES, a new music, tech and ideas festival coming to Melbourne on July 4 and 5. His interest in chipmusic began during his bachelor of music technology, before a journey to the genre’s spiritual home in New York left him well and truly hooked. “I definitely didn’t intend to become ‘the Game Boy music guy’, but it’s just something I keep coming back to,” he said. The genre’s community spirit was one of the reasons he jumped at the chance to lead the workshops as part of CHANGES. CHANGES will bring together music labels, agencies, organisations and performers for more than 80 events across Melbourne, as well as live performances by leading lights of the Melbourne music scene. M102 West Footscray to Yarraville Water Main Renewal Project From early July 2018, Melbourne Water will start works to renew the last 2 kilometre section of the M102 Water Main. This work will include: • Constructing a new water main between Paramount Road, West Footscray, and Williamstown Road, Yarraville. • Reinstating work sites as close as possible to pre-construction conditions. • Disconnecting and decommissioning the existing pipeline running underneath Somerville Road. DJ puts heat in beats Altona’s David Stoneman aka DJ Dance Beats is unlike anyone you’ve ever heard. Stoneman was in and out of the Royal Children’s Hospital until age 18. He has a VP (ventriculoperitoneal) shunt in his head to drain fluid and rods in his back for scoliosis, and is on the autism spectrum. The former volunteer at Steamrail Victoria said he was on a train when he heard a DJ and that prompted him to learn the craft and start doing gigs as Party Music DJ Hire. His first gig was at a CFA event, raising money for the Good Friday Appeal “to give something back”. He also DJ’d in front of hundreds of punters at the Newport Hub for Victorian Youth Week.

What do you like about Brooklyn? It’s close to the freeway and close to Altona Gate shopping centre. What would you change? Nothing – I’m happy there. When I downsized, I moved around the corner. I sold my house and I bought a unit, but it’s just 500 metres around the corner. What’s your local favourite cafe or eatery? Fish and Chips on Civic – friendly people. Borrack Square Charcoal Chicken – they always have my order ready. How did your passion for quilting start? It was my Aunty Alison who got me started and then I met Kim [Reilly, Seabreeze Quilters president]. I took to it like a duck to water. Can you tell me about the Seabreeze Quilters?
Some of your quilts go to The Royal Children’s Hospital … I’ve met a lady, Josephine, who’s a co-ordinator [at the hospital] and she lives in Yarraville, so I can just drop them off. So when people give me plastic bags full of fabric or someone gives you all the leftover novelties, that’s where they end up. There’s specific sizes that they want, like little toddler ones to four-year-old to teenagers. Their program is called Very Snuggly Quilts. A couple of years ago, I handed in an African quilt with African animals. The lady that handed out the quilts told Josephine to tell me that it went to a little boy from Kenya. We put in all the novelties in the quilts, because when mum and dad have gone home and the little tacker’s just stuck in bed all by themselves, the nurses come and play “I spy”, like “Find the pussy cat” and “Find the pumpkin”. The other group we support is Women’s Health West, their crisis accommodation … every child who goes into that service gets a quilt. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you? I worked with men all my life in grease and oil and dirt – auto parts – and here I am playing with beautiful fabrics and colour. I’m split in half. It was a big challenge, joining a women’s group. They’re a fabulous bunch of girls. When you’re a quilter, you go and buy expensive fabric and you cut it all up and you stitch it back together again. But my love of quilting is using scraps. They’ve given me the title of Scrap Queen. I get little bags of goodies from the different girls
and other groups, and I make them into quilts. I love to recycle fabric ties.

Get practical and ruthless: it’s time for the Great Declutter we’ve always wanted. Keep only what still reflects who you really are.
3. Moving can sometimes mean leaving old acquaintances behind which, while sad, also gives you a chance to make new ones. People often complain about boredom with their ‘known world’, so moving into the unknown can galvanise you. Treat the move like a teenage crush, look anew for the good

Vikings prepare for a top spot attack Three rounds ago, Altona boasted an immaculate 6-0 record and shared a two-game break over the rest of the Western Region Football League division 1 field with Werribee Districts. But now the Vikings are in a mini-slump. They’ve lost two of their past three matches and have fallen to third on the ladder. A similar tale is unfolding at Werribee Districts, which has lost its past two. As those two sides encountered their first rough patches, the other contenders caught up. Deer Park and Spotswood pounced to take hold of first and second spots respectively on percentage. It is not panic stations yet for Altona, which has the same 7-2 record as Deer Park, Spotswood and Werribee Districts. Altona has a chance to re-claim a top two spot in a blockbuster clash with Deer Park at Grant Reserve on Saturday. The Vikings can strike a psychological blow on Deer Park if they can beat it for a second time this season. But if the Vikings don’t turn up, a third loss in four could see them lose touch with the top two. Altona will be crying out for more avenues to goal after managing just seven majors in an 11-point loss to Hoppers Crossing at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday. One thing is certain – Patrick Rose will be dangerous in attack for the Vikings, having kicked 45 goals in nine matches. He still managed four goals in a starring role for his side against Hoppers, but there were only three other Vikings goalkickers on the day. While Altona has fallen a couple of rungs, Spotswood has risen in the rankings on the back of a five-game win streak. ■ After the tragic death of a young Hoppers Crossing football player last week, parents, teammates, friends and the broader football community came together on Sunday at Hogans Road Reserve to acknowledge a young man’s sad passing and to embrace each other on the road to recovery. The club became a place to gather and talk and grieve for those coming to terms with the loss. That says a lot about the club and those in charge. Todd is still involved in football, coaching South Fremantle in the WAFL, while Danny has been working with young indigenous men for a few years. Bulldog fans usually feel that ’97 was the one that got away, while a lot of players believe ’98 was the year the team was at its best. Curley, though, cited 1999 as the year he looks back on as a missed opportunity, as the Dogs were the best defensive team in the competition. ■ The reunion was a resounding success with the likes of West, Romero, Hudson, Martin, Kellett, Minton Connell, Smith, Liberatore, Croft, Dimattina, Powell and Kretiuk rubbing shoulders with Casey, Abbey, Whitten and Morrison. It was also great to see another former champion – Laurie Sandilands – in the room, as part of a visit from the Gold Coast. Laurie, a former club captain and one of the first players to go into media, looks fit and relaxed.

The dark clouds have finally cleared for Yarraville Glory – well, for a week at least. The Glory has climbed out of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 relegation zone for the first time since round two after a 1-0 win over FC Clifton Hill at McIvor Reserve on Saturday. Glory coach Paul Donnelly was thrilled for his team, having watched them work so hard on the track and in games to turn their season around on the back of two consecutive wins. “The boys have been working really hard and they played well today, so it was great for them to get the reward,” he said. “I just hope it gives us the confidence and the belief that we’re going in the right direction.” Darcey Den Ouden has been the star for Yarraville in its past two wins. Both wins came by a single goal, both supplied by Den Ouden. Den Ouden’s absence with injury earlier in the season left a huge void on the front line, but he is back and firing and the team is thriving with his finishing qualities. “He got the winner last week and he got the winner again this week,” Donnelly said. “He’s been injured, he hurt himself during pre-season and we’re slowly getting him back to his best. “We’ve got the rewards the past couple of weeks because he’s snuck in a couple of goals and that will give him heaps of confidence. “He’s one of those players who could go on a bit of a scoring spree.” Donnelly was full of praise for central defensive duo Ryan Stewart and Andy Taylor. No matter how low the Glory sunk, Stewart

Cross country runner Jack Rayner is enjoying career-best form. The Western Athletics product has taken out victories at the Great Ocean Road Running Festival, Launceston 10-kilometre race and Victorian Cross Country Championships 10-kilometre to kick-start his winter program. Rayner has taken his running to another level in the past three years, coinciding with him linking up with specialist distance running coach Nick Bideau at the Melbourne Track Club. “It’s probably the best form I’ve been in since I started running,” Rayner said. “I’d say mostly it’s down to joining the Melbourne Track Club in 2016 and new training I’ve been doing. “There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, it’s not just going for easy runs, it’s actually really hard training day in day out. “I’ve been injury free and been able to build
a big base up, which is starting to show now through my racing.” Rayner has fitted in seamlessly at the Melbourne Track Club. The 22-year-old from Altona has thrived in an elite program, alongside some top middle and long distance runners. Having the expertise of Bideau at the helm has certainly helped. “It’s coached by Nick Bideau, who is probably one of the best distance coaches in Australia,” Rayner said. “He’s been around for so long and knows exactly what to do in any situation. “There’s so many guys to train with all the time and that’s pushed me along and taken me to another level. “That’s one of the main reasons why I’ve improved so much.” Picking up gold medals at the Launceston 10km, which he won in a Western Athletics club record time, and the Victorian Cross

In men’s premier league, Footscray feasted on goals in a 6-1 trouncing of Brunswick. The main weapon for the Bulldogs was Liam Braithwaite with three goals, while Sam McIntosh scored two. The Big V only needs to beat South Australia in the final game at Etihad Stadium on July 4 to be crowned champions. The sides could head into the blockbuster undefeated, though it is dependent on SA, who has played one less game than Vic Metro, beating the Allies in Geelong on Friday. A Jets-inspired Vic Metro made it three-from-three with a hard fought 26-point win over Vic Country at the MCG on Sunday. Jets captain Xavier O’Halloran was huge in the final quarter, taking a telling pack mark and kicking a crucial goal to set Vic Metro on its way to victory. Playing as a forward, away from his primary spot in the midfield, O’Halloran, who also has the honour of Vic Metro captaincy, showed his versatility and stood up when it counted to finish with two goals. “He played a little bit of a different role today, forward for most of the day, which is good for his development,” Western Jets coach Torin Baker said. “He chimed in with a couple of goals and went on the ball at stages as well and did what he normally did. “It was a big moment in the last quarter that mark and grab. “It probably sealed the deal.” Buku Khamis was magnificent for Vic Metro in defence. Khamis is one of the form players at the championships and could be an All Australian by the end of the competition. A South Sudandese refugee who is part of the Western Bulldogs next generation academy, Khamis has demonstrated a multi-faceted skill set that has translated to national under-age level. “It’s a positive that he’s been able to take his TAC Cup form, which he’s really built over the last few weeks with us, and taken that into the championships and had a very good period,” Baker said. “He just reads the play really well, backs himself in the air and is pretty neat by foot. “He can play on talls and smalls as well because he’s got this leg speed that closes space quickly.” Zak Butters was influential for Vic Metro across the midfield. His ability to work his way out of the congestion and deliver with pinpoint accuracy was a feature. He was also not afraid to mix it verbally with his Vic Country opponents. “He just shows those moments of class,” Baker said. “When he’s around the ball, things happen. “Whether it’s the way he moves, he’s able to off-put defenders with a step and open up space for teammates. “He also plays on the edge a little bit and he’s certainly not backward in coming forward, but

It took a gutsy effort for Rayner to take out his first state title, shrugging off a determined challenge from Andy Buchanan with 500 metres to run. “It was such a tough race the whole way,” Rayner said. “It was down to the one little hill at the end when I started to make my move and went all out from there and got the better of him.” Rayner, who dreams of qualifying for the world championships and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, will head to the national championships in Brisbane this August with confidence.

Williamstown CYMS survived a scare to beat Old Ivanhoe Grammarians by six points in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C at Fearon Reserve on Saturday. Jack Noonan and Jack Gray kicked three crucial goals apiece for CYs in a low scoring game, while Kallan Dawson was named best. The CYs are a game and percentage clear on top of the ladder.

Williamstown got local bragging rights over Footscray in a thrilling 10-9 win in the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league. The Fearons were seemingly cruising to victory at three-quarter time, but the Bulldogs mounted a late comeback with five of the last six goals, only to fall short by a goal. Alexander Pike was the dominant player on the stat sheet for Williamstown with three goals and two assists. Kane Mollison was best for Footscray with five goals, including three in the last quarter. Williamstown sits on top of the ladder, while Footscray is back in third.

Altona Gators crashed to a 78-71 loss to Craigieburn Eagles in the Big V basketball men’s division 2 at the Craigieburn Sports Stadium on Sunday. The Gators had been building up some momentum over the past month, but losing their past two games has stopped them in their tracks. James Till managed a double double for the Gators with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Nathanael Coory top-scored with 18 points to go with five rebounds and three assists.
