Tennis twins a finals hit A set of identical twins has taken sibling rivalry to a new level, competing against each other last week in a women’s tennis grand final. Barb Kelly and Elizabeth Round, 71, started playing tennis at age 10 with Liston Tennis Club in Williamstown. They now play for rival clubs – Ms Kelly for Williamstown Central Tennis Club and Ms Round for Yarraville Tennis Club. “We play in the same western region mid-week ladies’ competition each season, and this season – for the first time that I can remember – my team made the grand final,” Ms Kelly said. “My sister’s team often makes the grand final because they’ve been playing for a lot longer. Because we both made the grand final, we got to play against each other.” Yarraville won, but the sisters aren’t keeping score. “We’re best friends, really,” Ms Kelly said. “Of course we like to beat each other on the tennis court, but if it happens it happens.” Ms Round, half an hour older than her sister, said the two could often predict each other’s moves. “We probably know one another’s game very well,” she said. “It’s been a wonderful thing for the two of us. “It’s just an enjoyable sport with our teams and, particularly when we’re opposed to one another, we have a wonderful game.” BARB KELLY AND ELIZABETH ROUND

A recent audit by the council’s recycling contractor, SKM Industries, found that the presence of bagged domestic waste in yellow bins indicated some residents were using recycling bins for rubbish. With bags usually breaking during the collection and sorting process, contamination of recycled material was found to be common. The audit also found that textiles, which cannot be recycled, were increasingly appearing in the yellow bins.

Hobsons Bay councillors this week voted to increase waste collection fees by 28.5 per cent. The council said the proposed new increase would reflect the true cost of waste removal following China’s ban on importing low-quality recycled paper and plastic. The draft budget for 2018-19 originally proposed a 17 per cent increase. Fees are now set to rise by $48.60 to $218.30 for those with a 120-litre garbage bin and a
240-litre recycling bin, and by $51.75 to $232 for those who also have a green waste bin. An officer’s report stated the new waste charge would pass on to ratepayers the $760,000 increased cost to the council. Cr Colleen Gates said the increase was still “good value” compared with other councils. “I’m comfortable with supporting a 28 per cent increase rather than the original 17,” she said. “The proposal here is to pass on what we think will be the true cost of waste removal and

Sports plan goals set By Goya Dmytryshchak A $95 million plan to address Hobsons Bay sports priorities for the next decade has been endorsed by the council. A separate $5 million plan to alleviate the municipality’s shortage of tennis facilities has also been adopted. The council’s Sports Facility Needs Analysis identified the top six fastest-growing sports as netball, basketball, AFL, tennis, soccer and cricket. Short-term priorities, to be implemented in one to two years, have been costed at $33.5 million and include an $18.5 million four-court extension at Altona Sports Centre.
Home to more than 30 clubs and 6000-plus registered users, the centre at Graham Reserve in Altona Meadows currently has six indoor basketball/netball courts and two outdoor netball courts. A new $20 million four to six court netball and basketball facility is planned for Altona North/Newport as a long-term priority – to be undertaken within five to 10 years. That is almost half the $44.4 million allocated for long-term infrastructure. There are also long-term plans for new $6 million cricket and soccer pitches within the Precinct 15 development site at Altona North. Medium-term priorities costing
$19.3 million include $3 million to upgrade Digman Reserve for soccer and cricket and $2 million for upgrades to Croft Reserve for football and cricket. The tennis needs assessment identified that the overwhelming majority of Tennis Victoria registered participants in Hobsons Bay were from Williamstown/Williamstown North. The plan proposes $2.885 million in upgrades to the existing 14 courts and $2.3 million for two new venues at Altona North and Williamstown High School in the next decade. club that don’t have their own facilities.” Mr Gauci revealed architect plans for a two-storey building with a community facility on the second level so the club can generate revenue. ACSC’s facilities weren’t identified as a priority under the council’s $95 million plan for infrastructure investment over the next decade. New day dawns for pub’s tacos A Mexican food chain has warned Footscray pub The Reverence Hotel to stop advertising its popular Taco Tuesday. Salsas Fresh Mex, which has an outlet at Highpoint shopping centre, has written to the hotel demanding it stop using the phrase Taco Tuesday on its website and social media accounts. “We assume that you are unaware that Salsas is the owner of the registered trade mark TACO TUESDAY in respect to the provision of Mexican-style food and restaurant services,” the company’s letter states. “The Mexican-style food offered by Salsas under that trademark has become extremely well and favourably known among members of the public in Australia, and as a result is associated with Salsas.” Publican Matt Bodiam said his first reaction was amusement, but he soon realised the potential seriousness of the situation. “I can’t believe someone can trademark Taco Tuesday – it would be like trademarking Happy Hour or Tight-Arse Tuesday,” he said. Mr Bodiam said the pub had been serving up cheap tacos and beer every Tuesday night since he and his partner, Melanie, took over in 2012. “Taco Tuesday is something we all had in our childhood; it’s like fish and chip Friday – it belongs to everyone,” he said. A Salsas Fresh Mex spokeswoman said the company provided support to its franchise network, including defence of trademarks. “The term Taco Tuesday was trademarked by Salsas Fresh Mex in 2011 and has since been used extensively across the brand’s marketing and promotional efforts,” she said. “We believe it is our responsibility to inform all businesses of our trademark ownership to best protect the interests of our small business owners.” The move has sparked a concerted backlash on the company’s Facebook page. Vicsport chairman Ron Gauci has unveiled a $4 million plan to redevelop the Altona City Soccer Club’s clubrooms and pavilion at H.C. Kim Reserve. Mr Gauci gave a budget submission at last week’s Hobsons Bay council meeting. The club is calling for funds for what would be the club’s first major upgrade in 53 years. The meeting heard the club had a 340-player base, which was expected to double by 2020. Mr Gauci, whose family moved to the area last November, said his son chose Altona City because of the quality of the club.

Police are searching for five offenders who allegedly robbed and assaulted ravers at a dance party on the former Bradmill factory site in Yarraville about 2am Sunday, June 10. Inner-west crime figures fall By Benjamin Millar and Goya Dmytryshchak Inner-west crime rates have dropped substantially over the past year, driven by falls in property offences such as theft. Crime Statistics Agency figures released last Thursday show a 12 per cent decline in crime in Maribyrnong and a six per cent decline in Hobsons Bay for the 12 months to March 31. The number of recorded offences tumbled from 9187 to 8086 in Maribyrnong and from 6424 to 6015 in Hobsons Bay.
Victoria Police Divisional Commander Therese Fitzgerald said the results demonstrated the strong focus on high volume crimes such as burglary and theft, particularly at hotspots such as around train stations. She expects greater inroads to be made under a multi-agency approach designed to keep young people in school and away from trouble. “We are starting to see the benefits of it, targeting youth education and making sure they are going to school or there are suitable employment pathways,” she said. Superintendent Fitzgerald said there was still
work to be done around areas such as assaults, which rose from 551 to 571. Crimes against the person also rose in Hobsons Bay, from 894 to 949, including sexual offences which increased from 111 to 139. Property and deception offences dropped from 4075 to 3768, including burglaries down from 586 to 479 and theft from 2461 to 2284. Hobsons Bay Acting Inspector Brett Kahan said police were working hard to curb crime. “Hobsons Bay residents should feel satisfied that there are more police on the roads in their area than ever before, with a focus on ensuring
maximum police presence during planned events that draw large crowds,” he said. “We have a clear focus on preventing high-harm crime by targeting high-risk offenders. “Whilst there has been a small increase in sex offences, much of this can be attributed to a greater confidence in victims reporting such crimes to police.” There were 380,150 criminal incidents recorded by Victoria Police across the state, down 8.8 per cent compared to the same period last year.

May the faith be with you when Williamstown this month hosts Australia’s only cosplay church service. The brainchild of Uniting Church Reverend Avril Hannah-Jones, the first fantasy and science-fiction service in 2011 caused international controversy and criticism from some quarters. But now, the return of the Jedi has become ecumenical and will be celebrated by two denominations. Rev Hannah-Jones will lead a joint mass with Reverend Bill Beagley at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, welcoming everyone – especially geeks – to attend in costume. “I am both a Minister in the Uniting Church and a geek, somebody who loves fantasy novels and Star Wars films and television shows,” Rev Hannah-Jones said. “I think there are themes in those books and films and TV programs that parallel themes in

Council electric car plug By Goya Dmytryshchak A convoy of electric cars rolled up to last week’s Hobsons Bay council meeting, with drivers seeking $300,000 funding for charge points and dedicated carparking across the municipality. Addressing councillors, Williamstown’s Jeff Challis said there was a real opportunity for the council to go from being on the backfoot to be being a leader in the new transport technology. “We could work with other councils and create a network of fast-charging around the bay – the bay trail,” Mr Challis said. “Why don’t you make it a policy that every time you do a carpark, it has an electric vehicle charge point?

Later in the meeting, the council voted to undertake a feasibility study into trialling electric vehicle charging stations at key locations across Hobsons Bay. The council voted to work with local businesses to encourage the installation of charging infrastructure, to lobby state and federal governments for support for electric vehicle charging stations, and to consider an electric vehicle for the council’s fleet and a publicly-available charging point at the

“If people go there, they can plug in for an hour or overnight. The Tesla superchargers take 45 minutes for a full charge. “Probably early 2019, there’ll start to be some model 3s arrive in Australia … I think it’s the future.”
More trees to go for tunnel Dozens more trees will be cut down for the West Gate Tunnel with 12 construction compounds to be built in the Hobsons Bay area. It comes as the Western Distributor Authority gave Hobsons Bay council a formal apology from the Transurban Group for up to 70 trees cleared in Grieve Parade, Altona North, by project contractor CPB John Holland. The trees, up to 30 years old, were felled on June 8 before the council’s arborist could undertake an inspection. Construction compounds will be built at: the former Mobil site in Simcock Avenue at Spotswood; around Melbourne/Williamstown roads at Spotswood; Grieve Parade at Altona North; the southern portal site near Precinct 15 at Altona North; Lynch Road Reserve at Brooklyn; near Millers Road at Brooklyn; near The Boulevard at Yarraville; between West Gate Freeway and Geelong Road; and two at the M80 interchange. Delays plague Saigon market By Benjamin Millar The redevelopment of Footscray’s fire-razed Little Saigon market site could begin by the end of this year, provided the owners can secure an extension to their lapsed planning permit. Fire tore through the iconic Footscray market 18 months ago, causing more than $12 million damage. Fire investigators found a fault in an electrical switchboard had caused the December 2016 blaze.
Site co-owner Binh Le said a developer has been secured to help rebuild a ground level market, topped by car parking and 260 apartments spread across two towers up to 12 storeys high. “A lot of the old tenants have said that they want to come back,” he said. The permit for the redevelopment, first granted in 2012, has now been extended three times. Mr Le said works were due to begin after the leases held by tenants ran out last April, but the impact of the fire caused extensive delays.

“We are hoping to get the extensions to the permit so we can do further things like apply for building permits,” he said. “It’s now in the hands of the planning department of Maribyrnong council.” Maribyrnong council’s planning services
director Nigel Higgins confirmed his department had received another request for an extension of time for the permit. “This is the fourth request to extend, and we are considering the request,” he said. The council issued a clean-up notice for the site in January last year after high temperatures combined with rotting vegetables, meat and fish to produce a putrid smell. The clean-up took place as soon as demolition approval was obtained and the site has been sitting empty ever since.
Traders win flash fans The fight to save a Footscray tradition has taken to the streets. A “trolley flash mob” popped up on the corner of Leeds and Hopkins streets on Saturday morning in protest at a council crackdown on street traders. About 30 protestors took part in Saturday’s protest, brandishing signs in support of the street traders. Star Weekly earlier this month reported that Maribyrnong council has been warning the traders to stop operating in the area without a permit or risk fines up to $500 and having their goods impounded. The mostly elderly Vietnamese-Australian traders have for years set up on the corner to sell items including home-grown herbs, chillies and pot plants. The protest coincides with an online Change. org petition that has so far collected more than 280 signatures calling for the council to reverse its policy to enforce fines against the traders.
Tahj Rosmarin, an architect who has been closely studying Footscray’s urban environment, said the traders had been a central part of what gives Footscray the character valued by the community. Mr Rosmarin said he and colleague James Connor had mapped Footscray’s informal economy in a bid to understand what gave the area such a strong sense of identity. “There is obviously a disconnect with what the council sees as valuable in Footscray,” he said. “They need to start looking at what these traders are contributing to urban life.” Mr Rosmarin and Mr Connor met council management on Friday to share the findings of their research, using the opportunity to push for a broader understanding of the council’s role in helping the area maintain its appeal. Mobil tops up its tank stocks By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona’s Mobil refinery is set to get a giant tank, matching Australia’s largest crude oil tank at Geelong. Owner ExxonMobil Australia on Friday announced the $50 million project, which is its biggest investment at Altona since 2005. The new tank will hold 100 million litres – the equivalent of 40 Olympic swimming pools – and will be built within the existing refinery footprint. Standing 20 metres high, the tank’s
diameter will be 78 metres – wider than an international soccer pitch. Numerous homes sit about a kilometre from the refinery, whose southern boundary is Kororoit Creek flowing into Port Phillip Bay. The new tank will increase the refinery’s storage capacity by almost half, from 220 million to 320 million litres. Mobil’s Australia and New Zealand refining manager Riccardo Cavallo said the new storage facility was needed to help meet a growing demand for transportation fuels.

“During the past five years, ExxonMobil has invested more than $400 million at the Altona refinery and Yarraville terminal,” he said. “Recent investments include construction of a three-kilometre pipeline connecting Yarraville terminal to the Somerton jet fuel
pipeline, construction of two new fuel storage tanks at Yarraville terminal and work to increase Altona refinery’s production.” The Altona refinery supplies half of Victoria’s fuel. It processes up to 13 million litres of crude oil a day into petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and LPG. The building phase is expected to create 100 jobs. Construction will start this month and is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2020. Rival Viva Energy last November opened its 100 million litre tank at Geelong.

A Footscray photographer is donating his winnings from a popular photo prize to an organisation assisting asylum seekers. Elwyn Davies took out the People’s Choice Award in the annual Picturing Footscray photo competition, run by Victoria University, with a picture of a sunrise taken from the banks of the Maribyrnong River looking across to the docks. The award goes to the photograph that attracts the highest number of votes from visitors to the exhibition and “likes” on Facebook. Davies said he was donating his $500 prize and $250 from the sale of the picture to Footscray’s Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) winter appeal. The donation coincides with the ASRC’s annual fundraising telethon, being held on World Refugee Day this Wednesday. The ASRC is aiming to top the $660,000

Kim finds her own place By Tate Papworth Kim Tran’s journey on My Kitchen Rules might not have ended the way she wanted it to, but her food journey has just begun. The St Albans-based contestant, who partnered with her friend, Suong Pham, on the show, will open her own restaurant later this month. The restaurant, called Ms Kim, will be located in Nelson Place, Williamstown, and will showcase the traditional Vietnamese food Kim and Suong cooked in the TV series. “I wanted to go on MKR to showcase our Vietnamese traditional cuisine and then come out and open up my own restaurant, continuing on what I cooked on the show,” Kim said. “I’m going for traditional flavouring and traditional taste, but I’m going to modernise it a bit with plating so it’s also a sensory experience.” Kim said that while she’d always dreamed of opening her own restaurant, it was her time on MKR that gave her the confidence to take action. “Being on the show and making it to the grand final showed me what I’m capable of and to take that leap to open my own place,” she said. “I wish we’d won because we could have done so much with that prize money, but it’s OK, that’s the decision. I’m going to roll with it.” Ms Kim will serve lunch and dinner, with the hopes of having a breakfast menu by summer. “We don’t want it to be too fancy, but we do want it to be relaxing, welcoming and soothing,” Kim said. With a Saturday, June 30, launch date in mind, Kim is expecting some familiar faces to help celebrate the occasion.

Mayne asks for pokies support Anti-poker machine campaigner Stephen Mayne has called on Hobsons Bay council to help lobby for legislative reform ahead of November’s state election. Representing the Alliance for Gambling Reform, Mr Mayne spoke to a funding submission requesting $15,000 at last week’s council meeting. He told councillors he toured six gaming machine venues in the municipality before the meeting. “The harm has increased in Hobsons Bay where your losses are up by 3.2 per cent over the first four months of the year,” he told councillors. “The Millers Inn … now owned by Woolworths, the world’s largest operator of poker machines. “Woolworths also owns the Rifle [Club] Hotel, which is also running 20 hours a day at the maximum.” Mr Mayne then moved on to venues which benefit football clubs, starting with the Seagulls Nest. “Why is a football club offering 50 poker machines at 4 o’clock in the morning?” he said. “Two of them are owned for the benefit of the Carlton footy club – The Vic Inn and Club Laverton – and when you combine the fact that they are managed by Bruce Mathieson, the billionaire pokies partner of Woolworths … the majority of your losses are managed by Woolworths and Bruce Mathieson.” The council is considering the request.

M102 West Footscray to Yarraville Water Main Renewal Project From early July 2018, Melbourne Water will start works to renew the last 2 kilometre section of the M102 Water Main. Upgrading this important piece of infrastructure will involve: • Constructing a new water main between Paramount Road, West Footscray, and Williamstown Road, Yarraville. • Reinstating work sites as close as possible to pre-construction conditions. • Disconnecting and decommissioning the existing pipeline running underneath Somerville Road. The majority of works will take place from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and 7am to 1pm, Saturday (when required). Outside of these times quiet activities such as cleaning-up or office duties will be undertaken. Due to peak water demands during summer, the construction crews will stand-down in December 2018 and return in late March 2019 to carry out connection and decommissioning works. The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-2019. While construction is underway, some changes to traffic conditions will be required to help us carry out our works safely and with as little disruption as possible. Pedestrian access will be maintained and cyclists detours will apply on Somerville Road between Julian Street and Williamstown Road. There will be signage and traffic controllers present to ensure people are able to safely navigate the work area. The speed limit in the vicinity of the works will be 40km/hour. I have been a very active member of the Tibetan community of Victoria ever since I came to Australia. I am the current president of Tibetan Community of Victoria, from 2012 to 2014 I was the vice-president. To me, the Tibetan people and the freedom of Tibet are my top priority. I believe in helping every single Tibetan, to advocate for their rights and help them in their daily life by doing small tasks such as reading their letters, filling forms, applying for public housing, making health-related appointments and things like helping individuals lodge applications to migrate and unite their partners from overseas. I have received awards such as Victoria’s Multicultural Award for excellence.

Can you tell us about the Tibetan community in Melbourne? Tibetans in Victoria are a small and emerging community, with a unique identity and cultural heritage. The first Tibetan to settle in Victoria was in 1979. Currently, there are about 500 Tibetans in Victoria. The community supports its members in adjusting to and integrating
The situation in Tibet is critical and getting worse. There is repression, cultural assimilation, denial of religion and cultural freedom, environment destruction. Since 2009, 152 Tibetans have self immolated for freedom in Tibet and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The Tibetan Community of Victoria, in partnership with cohealth, Foundation House, MiCare and the Australia Tibet Council, will mark Refugee Week with a celebration from 10am to 4pm on Sunday at Heavenly Queen Temple, 20 Joseph Road, Footscray. 800g Sebago potatoes 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 leek, trimmed, halved, washed and thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 400g piece double smoked ham, diced (you can find this at the supermarket deli) 535g can country chicken soup 100g grated tasty cheese Preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius (160 fan forced). Grease a six cup capacity baking dish. Peel and boil potatoes for 12 to 15 minutes or until just tender. Drain. Cool for a few minute then slice. Heat oil in large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add leek and cook, stirring, until softened. Add garlic and ham. Cook for 2 minutes. Stir in soup. Gently stir through potatoes, season with pepper and place in baking dish. Sprinkle with cheese and bake for 30 minutes or until golden.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE There is no chickening out for Kenny Weir at this new set-up The Art Of Fried Chicken has taken over two shopfronts that have long been empty since the days they housed two Asian eateries. They – and the walkway between them that used to lead to the original Laksa King – have been turned into a single premises. TAFC is a food truck operation putting down bricks-and-mortar roots, though I suspect the building as a whole is destined for development somewhere along the way. It’s fitting, then, that this new fried chook joint has something of a makeshift vibe about it – less restaurant and more food-truck-withoutwheels, with rudimentary seating. That’s OK by us. As well, we’re happy to give them some leeway in terms of assessment as we are visiting in the opening hours of their opening day. Such is not ideal for CTS story purposes, of course, but that’s how the timing has worked out – post-Saturday morning kung fu, it’s been an easy and choice option. Plus: We’re hungry. We arrive about 12.20pm and are served quickly. About 10 minutes later, the place is a whole lot more crowded; the word is out. We ignore the opening day $1 wingettes and rib specials. Of the menu listings, we ignore those under the Things With Bread and the Chicken Without Bones headings. Actually, we are bemused anyone would order the latter. Why order breast when you

What we get: Three pieces of regular Art Of Chicken ($15), three pieces of Asian Hot Nashville Chicken ($16), Mama’s Vietnamese slaw ($5.50) and chips ($5.50). It’s all pretty good. Even the chunkier meat pieces are juicy (or at least not dry), though inevitably it’s the bone-dominated items that are the most tasty. Bennie is disappointed at the mildness of the spice hit in the Nashville poultry, though the spicing appears to be a bit random, as the wing I have gives me a right nice glow. He rates the chips highly. Myself, not so much; they could, IMO, be hotter and less greasy. (Just to re-iterate: This is opening day, so some leeway is in order.) Perhaps best of all is the Viet slaw – it’s excellent. The Art Of Fried Chicken is destined to be a Flemo hit. Will we return? You bet. Homemade recipes for wholesome healing There are many old-fashioned remedies that have been around for longer than we know and that can ease the discomfort of influenza and common colds. CHICKEN SOUP Also known as “Jewish penicillin” – there are signs chicken soup may work in a similar way to its namesake. Despite their forward struggles, the Jets trailed by just 10 points at the final change, and two quick goals to Joshua Klaromenos and Darcy Cassar gave them the lead midway through the term. However, the Falcons rallied to kick a clutch goal from the boundary and another from long range to seal the result. Falcons find their wings
Gellibrand Oval is one of the most identifiable and picturesque in sport in the west, but like the naughty child, when it is bad it is very bad, and boy was it bad on Sunday. A miserable, cold, wet and windy day was had by all who braved the home of the Seagulls. Williamstown and Sandringham tried hard, but even from the warmth of my lounge room it was not a sight to behold. What a shock it must have been to those St Kilda-listed players more accustomed to playing under the roof at Etihad Stadium. Mind you, it was a better game to watch than some of the AFL games played in pristine conditions. At least we saw some one-on-one contests. Willy created history by keeping Sandy goalless.

can say with 100 per cent certainty that my recent ambivalence to the game has nothing to do with the current form of the Bulldogs. The boys are not going well and are most certainly not great to watch. I did like Bob Murphy’s analogy recently when he said words to the effect of “Winning the flag for Hawthorn or Geelong is like climbing a mountain – they look for another mountain, whereas for the Bulldogs it was like landing on the moon.” Like a lot of Bulldogs fans, for me it still seems like a dream. I suspect because it was so unexpected, many of us have still not really come to terms with it and maybe some of the players are the same. Are we all still basking in the glory of that win? I suspect we are, and even subconsciously it has affected the desperate need for success that was such a driving force for decades.
By Tara Murray City West Falcons’ young stars took the next step in their development in the Victorian Netball League on Wednesday night. After a slow start against DC North East Blaze, which saw them trail by two goals at half-time, the Falcons could have gone into their shell, but they came out firing in the third quarter. They restricted the Blaze to just five goals and turned the deficit into a seven-goal lead at the last break. They maintained that lead in the last quarter, winning 54-46. Falcons’ coach Marg Lind was thrilled with the win, which she hopes will give the playing group some more confidence. “I’ve been pretty good with them, but I ripped into them,” she said. “They turned a corner and were able to hold their heads when they needed to. “They were quite vocal and they are usually pretty quiet … They realised how important the game was and are starting to find their way.” While Lind was thrilled with the performance of the younger players, it was an experienced trio which led the way. Maddy Balson and Zoe Davies played their best game as a defensive duo, while Maggie Lind was the experienced head in attack. Uneeq Palavi scored 42 goals from 45 attempts, while Madelyn Gray scored 12 goals – both could still be playing in the Falcons’ under-19 team. Lind said Palavi, who has stepped into the championship side in the past month, was realising what she could do. Palavi was part of the state under-17 team. “We would have transitioned her through division 1 first if we could have,” Lind said. “She can really jump. Once she realised, it didn’t matter who she was on, that she could out-jump them, she settled.” The two look like they will do the majority of the shooting for the Falcons for the next few weeks. Jane Cook and Tahnysha Salanoa are unavailable due to Australian Netball League commitments, while Kath Knott is out injured and Tharjini Sivalingam is unavailable. The win leaves the Falcons sitting fifth, just percentage outside the top four. Lind said they were happy with where they were sitting at the moment. She said they were likely to get their ANL players back in the next few weeks. “The goal was to be in touch with the top four until the ANL was over,” she said. “Then hopefully come home with the sails and you never know what can happen. “As a club we’ve got to cover a whole team, due to ANL and injuries.”

Melbourne Colts don’t play in the WRFL any more and while that still seems weird, it makes perfect sense – given their geographic location and junior recruiting area – that they play in the Southern Football League. Their history though will always be linked to the west, and no more so than in a few weeks when they celebrate the 20th anniversary of their senior and reserves 1998 premierships. It was a day of glory for the Des Tuddenham-coached Colts, defeating Spotswood in the seniors and Parkside in the reserves. The Western Jets fell to just their third loss of the TAC Cup season at the weekend, losing to Geelong after struggling in the forward half through the middle of the game. The Jets hit the front late in the final quarter, but the Falcons ran out the game stronger, coming away with a 8.10 (58) - 6.12 (48) win at Avalon Airport Oval. Stand-in Jets coach Tom Perrett said while it was disappointing not to take the win, he was proud of the efforts of his side after six players left the side after making the Vic Metro squad for the national championships. “What we asked from everyone at the start of the day was to bring that Jets attitude and effort, and by and large across the day we saw

Fighting victory spells magic for Altona Altona Magic continued its good form by outlasting Nunawading City to seal an important NPL 2 soccer victory at the weekend. Taking on the 10th-placed team from the eastern conference, the Magic was made to fight hard for every opportunity and withstand some good attacking efforts from the visitors before walking away with a 1-0 win. The sides traded blows in the early stages, with the plucky City taking it up to its more fancied opponent. It was Altona that broke the deadlock when Robert Stambolziev buried a shot from his right boot into the bottom corner of the net in the 27th minute.
That would prove to be the match winner, despite both sides having some good attacking opportunities as the game progressed. Altona remains on top of the western conference, four points ahead of Moreland as the competition for top spots on the ladder heats up. In state league 2 north-west, Altona East was in early trouble in its clash with Westgate, but turned the game around after half-time to claim a good win. Westgate grabbed the lead over the Phoenix in the opening minute of the game when Djordje Aleksic broke free, and held on to that lead until the second half when the game began to turn.
The Phoenix scored twice after the break to grab a 2-1 win over the fifth-placed side, with Altona East remaining in ninth position. Elsewhere, Altona City drew 1-1 with North Sunshine Eagles in state league 1 north-west after Marcus Sherif’s first-half opener was cancelled out after the break. For much of the game it looked like City could claim an upset win over the second-placed Eagles, but an equaliser from Deang Aguek on the hour mark saw the home side secure a point from the tussle. Ziggy a reluctant star By Ewen McRae Ziad “Ziggy” Kadour enjoyed a day to remember on Saturday, with the Newport coach orchestrating a win over West Footscray in his 350th Western Region Football League game to keep the Power in the top four. While the division 2 game was tight all day, Newport pulled away in the final term to consign the Roosters to their seventh straight loss. Their only win of the season came in round one, also against Newport Kadour, who began playing at Newport in his under-10 days, said he was proud to reach such a rare milestone at the Power, but was a bit embarrassed by all the attention. “I would rather it had all stayed a little bit low-key – it got a bit out of control there,” he said. “It’s not really my style to have all the attention, but it’s great for the club, and obviously it was very humbling for me and my family. “I started my football career as an under-10 25 years ago at Newport, so to come back … and to play my 350th with a lot of family and friends was really good. “The main thing is that the seniors got a win and the reserves got a win, but I’m looking forward to the 351st game when it’s all just back to normal.” West Footscray started the better of the two sides, but wasted four gettable shots from close range to leave the door open for the Power, which pounced to take an early lead through five first-quarter goals. The home side extended its advantage in the second, matching the Roosters around the ground to lead by 23 points at the long break. While the Roosters came out strongly in the third quarter to trail by just two goals at the final change, a six goal-to-one final quarter from the Power sealed the win and a memorable day for the home club. Kadour said the way his side adapted and then put the Roosters away late in the game was very satisfying. “They probably didn’t take their chances early on and we were able to settle to take that lead, so that was important for us,” he said. “Then they dominated the third to keep it close … over the journey our fourth quarters haven’t been that great, so to come away with a big win after that final term was very pleasing. “It may have looked dominant, but it was certainly hard fought, and I was telling the West Footscray coach after the game that they were better than a one-win team. “It’s very tight in this grade, apart from the top two or three sides, so now we’re 4-4 and we go into a big match this week against Point Cook with a bit of momentum.”

Doggies work hard for historic win It was a memorable day for the Western Bulldogs VFLW side on Saturday, breaking through for their first win since joining the competition this season. Just six games into the season, and coming up against another first-time team in the competition in Williamstown, the Bulldogs were far too strong across the day as they led from start to finish in the 12.11 (83)-4.3 (27) win. The Bulldogs got off to a strong start with a five-goal-to-one opening term to set up a buffer before both sides struggled in blustery conditions in the second term. The game opened up after the long break with a further five goals to the hosts while Williamstown failed to hit the scoreboard, however they did better late in the game as they won the fourth quarter. Taking the field for the first time this season, Alyssa Mifsud kicked four goals for the Dogs in the win, while she had a valuable partner in crime in the front half in Jess Francke, who added five goals of her own from 14 touches. For Williamstown, Jess Duffin was a clear best on ground for her side, standing tall across the ground and kicking a huge goal in the final quarter from outside 50 that took a kind bounce to roll through. Jedda Heard, Morgan Lowe and Stacey Cross were also solid contributors for the Seagulls in their roles. The win sends the Bulldogs to ninth on the ladder ahead of this week’s clash with Casey, while Williamstown will enjoy the bye this week before hosting Darebin. In the men’s VFL, Footscray were made to fight hard but came away with the points in their clash with Coburg. Angus Monfries saw plenty of the ball, with 26 touches and a goal, while Will Hayes was a clear best on ground with 23 touches, seven marks and five tackles. For Williamstown’s VFL side, diabolical weather kept scores low in the first half before the Seagulls came away with a 68-point win over Sandringham. Rollercoaster weekend for Altona Gators Altona Gators had to be satisfied with just one win from their two games at the weekend, taking the points on Saturday before dropping a game on Sunday. In Saturday’s game against Camberwell the Gators claimed the win despite scoring less field goals and less points from long range. It was Altona’s superior free point and three-point shooting that set it apart as they took a 61-51 victory. In a close game, the Gators conceded more rebounds and assists, and gave away more turnovers, but they were able to shoot at 70 per cent from the free throw line, while also making five three-pointers to two in the victory. It was a solid team effort by the Gators’ four main players, with Nathanael Coory (18 points, five rebounds, five assists), Tom Scott (12 points, seven rebounds), James Till (nine points, 14 rebounds) and James Webster (11 points) all filling up the stat sheet to keep their side in the game. In Sunday’s game against Maccabi, a more attacking game produced an entertaining contest for Altona’s home fans but the Gators could not keep up with the visitors as the hosts went down 81-69.

This time it was Altona’s turn to be on the receiving end of the free throw count, with Maccabi’s 11-point advantage in that stat essentially deciding the contest as the Gators performed strongly all game. Till was again strong under the rim with 15 rebounds to go with his 11 points, while Coory rounded out a good weekend personally with 22 points and three steals. The weekend’s results have the Gators sitting eighth on the ladder ahead of this week’s clash with Craigieburn. In youth championship women action on Sunday, the Gators put up a good fight against Ringwood but fell short, 55-63. Destiny Liu (11 points, six rebounds), Trinity Steele (11 points) and Zoe Day (10 points) all put up good numbers, but Ringwood was a touch more efficient in attack as it took the win. The loss leaves the Gators fourth in their division.
Footscray’s women’s Premier League had a commanding win over local rivals Altona on Sunday. While the game was tight early, with scores locked at 1-1 at half-time, the Footscray girls blew the game open after the break with five goals for a 6-2 victory. Footscray had six different players hit the scoresheet, and Altona had few answers for the attack. Footscray is second on the ladder, just a point behind Hawthorn, with Altona struggling in 14th. In the men’s Premier League game, Altona claimed the points, 6-5, with no player scoring more than one goal.

Former Australian T20 bowler James Muirhead has signed with Footscray Edgewater ahead of next summer’s Premier Cricket season. The 24-year-old leg spinner joins the Dogs from St Kilda, where he was a part of last season’s 2nd XI premiership side. Muirhead also played two games for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League last summer, but lost his Victorian contract at the end of March. The promising bowler has struggled for consistency at times, but did play five T20s for Australia in 2014, after once being annointed as the country’s next great spin bowler.

Spotswood gave itself a percentage boost when it took on Caroline Springs in WRFL division 1 action on Saturday. Spotswood took a while to get going as the two sides traded blows in the first half, but the 12.10 to 2.2 score after half-time showed the gap between the two sides. Jordan Boyd kicked four goals, the best of their 10 goalkickers in the 17.15 (117)-6.6 (42) win. The result keeps Spotswood in fourth place ahead of this week’s crucial clash with second-placed Werribee Districts. In division 2, Yarraville Seddon thumped North Footscray. Four goals to Corey Salvador led the way for the Eagles as they kept North Footscray goalless through the first half on the way to a 16.17 (113)-4.6 (30) win.
Rugby
Footscray remains winless in the Dewar Shield this season after going down in a heavy loss against high-flying Harlequin at the weekend. Footscray was able to run in two tries courtesy of Onesema Hafoka and Martin Naufahu, but the second-placed Harlequin had all the answers in attack as they crossed the line six times in the 40-12 victory. The loss leaves Footscray seventh in the eight-team top division ahead of this week’s match against Box Hill.

Teen eyes world success By Ewen McRae There’s not much time to rest for Celeste Mucci. Whether she’s competing with the world’s best in the hectic atmosphere of heptathlon competition, or training for the upcoming under-20 world championships in Finland, Mucci is always on the go. The Altona 18-year-old is in the best form of her short career, finishing fourth at the recent Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, posting several personal bests along the way to stamp herself as a star of the future. “It was very exciting,” Mucci said. “It was my first senior team, and to compete at a home games with all my family and friends up there was really exciting, I enjoyed the experience so much. “On the junior teams it’s usually just me and my coach, so you could really feel the support out there in the stadium. It gave me a huge lift,
and I was competing against girls who were fully matured and in their 20s so I definitely saw the difference between me now and where I want to be. “It definitely challenged me and pushed me up. I want to mix with them more often now.” Mucci finished the seven-sport event with 5915 points, with England’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson claiming gold on 6255 points. A strong hurdler, with five junior national titles to her name, Mucci said she needed to work on her 800 metre and throwing events, but was overall happy with how she performed. “I was coming in with good form, but then to put it all together on the two days was very pleasing,” she said. “I was a bit more nervous than usual with an Australian crowd, but they were good nerves in the end. “I took a lot of confidence out of that, and now going back to juniors having done that I
feel good.” Mucci will travel to Finland for the junior world championships from July 10, and is hopeful of some more good performances as she starts the two-year journey towards a potential Olympics in 2020. “It will be a different atmosphere again, but it’s back to juniors and I am a top age athlete so I’ll be expected to be at the top end this time,” Mucci said. “There’s no pressure really it’s just about seeing where I’m at, but I’m hopeful of competing for a medal. “After that it’s just qualifying for more senior teams, competing at indoor championships, world champs, and building my confidence so I’m ready to go when the Olympic trials roll around in a couple of years. “It’s been a goal of mine for a while to make an Olympic team, so it’s a big couple of years ahead.”

Altona’s Luke Goetz and Spotswood’s Nick Ryan are among 11 WRFL players selected in the initial 34-man Vic Metro squad ahead of next month’s under-18 national championships. The WRFL has the highest number of players selected in the squad of any metropolitan league, and the side will be coached by Footscray legend Brian Royal. Training will now begin for the squad, with the final team to be released closer to the first match against Vic Country on July 8.
