The Williamstown Literary Festival, known as the Willy Lit Fest, turns 15 this year and the 2018 festival promises to be one of the biggest and best! The festival takes place this weekend at the Williamstown Library and Town Hall and this year’s theme is ‘from little things’, a belief that extraordinary things can come from humble beginnings.

Second Avenue strip upgrade People visiting the Second Avenue shops in Altona North will soon be able to enjoy wider footpaths with new pavement and new pram ramps for better accessibility. The streetscape upgrade project, due for completion at the end of June, also includes kerb extensions, improved on-street parking, car park and road resurfacing, as well as a vehicle speed limit reduction. Tree planting in Altona The 2018 tree planting season has kicked off with over 300 trees having been planted in Altona and Seaholme. Lophostemon confertus trees have been planted along Grieve Parade to provide summer shade while Australian natives, Banksia integrafolia trees have been planted along Queen Street to provide colour, shade and a food source for birds. Native tree species Tristaniopsis laurina has also been planted along Ransom Avenue, which will significantly improve the streetscape.
Hobsons Bay World Environment Day event 3 June Over 400 people visited the Williamstown Town Hall on Sunday 3 June for the Hobsons Bay World Environment Day Community Festival. Speakers and experts joined over 20 local environmental community groups to host stalls and to provide information about environmental programs and initiatives, tips and tricks to beat plastic pollution and how to reduce waste. Community members participated in workshops and demonstrations and younger participants created recyclable ‘Trash Puppets’. Thanks to the Hobsons Bay community for attending.

New solar lighting for Pipeline Reserve, Seabrook Council is preparing to install new solar lighting at Pipeline Reserve, Seabrook between Point Cook Road and Shane Avenue over the coming weeks. The Reserve is home to a children’s play area and a new footpath connecting Shane Avenue and Point Cook Road, both of which are currently unlit.
Planting at the GROW site and Laverton Creek Council is proposing to reinvigorate the landscaping at the ‘GROW’ site, corner of Merton and Queen Sts, Altona Meadows during winter following ongoing vandalism. Several species of plants are proposed for planting and the community is invited to view and provide feedback on the plan by 25 June 2018. Anger over tunnel tree clearing By Goya Dmytryshchak The state government has labelled the clearing of 70 trees for the West Gate Tunnel project as “unacceptable”. The trees, near the corner of Grieve Parade and Blackshaws Road in Altona North, were cut down on Friday without approval, Hobsons Bay council said. The council said the trees, up to 30 years old, were felled to make way for a temporary construction compound for the Western Distributor Authority (WDA).
The council had been in discussion with a WDA contractor about using part of the council reserve, but no action was to be taken until the council’s arborist had advised which trees could be removed. Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair said the council “would be demanding a full explanation and restitution of the site”. “We’re just at the start of a four-year project, but already people are feeling sceptical about the assurances we’ve received that our local assets will be protected and maintained,” she said.
Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek (FOLKC) president Geoff Mitchelmore blamed the felling of the trees on “miscommunication”. “During the course of several meetings, FOLKC, council and WDA had discussed the saving of the trees on the construction site in Grieve Parade, but sadly the loss occurred through a miscommunication,” he said. “Trees will be replanted when the construction site is returned to the community, hopefully as a site commemorating the loss of 2300 Toyota employees when the manufacturing plant was closed last year.”
A spokesman for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan condemned the clearing. “This is unacceptable,” the spokesman said. “Any additional costs incurred as a result of this incident will be met by the builder, not the taxpayer.” The spokesman said that while there was planning permission to remove the trees, the parties had agreed not to commence until a joint inspection with the council. He said the CPB John Holland joint venture would work with the council to replace trees after tunnel construction was completed.
From pipe bands to public service, two locals are thrilled to have been recognised in Queen’s Birthday honours

Altona Meadows’ Anthony Sell has got that highland feeling. He has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours with an Order of Australia Medal for his service to pipe bands over 55 years. His association with pipe bands stretches back to 1963 when he became inaugural secretary of the Melbourne University Pipe Band while studying law. Mr Sell has been largely responsible for drafting the rules and regulations. He has been a life member of Pipe Bands Australia (formerly Australian Federation of Pipe Band Associations) since 1981, and of Pipe Bands Victoria since 1974. “The Victorian association is the oldest distinct pipe band association in the world – the Scots have never forgiven us,” Mr Sell said. “We started in 1924 and the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association in 1927.” During the 1970s, Mr Sell was president and an executive member of the City of Nunawading Highland Pipe Band, of which he also was made a life member. Mr Sell’s favourite tune is that of his father’s company – Bonnie Dundee – which is also how he became involved in pipe bands. “Dad commanded a company in the 2/5th Battalion in the Western Desert during World War II,” he said. “This was largely manned by people from the Victoria Scottish Regiment. “And the guy who was state president when I first got involved had been his sergeant major for a while, and they got on very well. “Several times, as a family, we went to town … so I was the kid sitting in the corner drinking a lemon squash while they were drinking a beer.”
Crossing country divide Williamstown’s Jenni Mitchell always wanted to bring the country to the city. She has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours with an Order of Australia Medal for services to the community and to women in rural Victoria. During the 1980s, Ms Mitchell worked for the Office of Rural Affairs Victoria and helped develop the Rural Women’s Network. “We spent a lot of time linking rural women, isolated or otherwise, with city services or regional services, and giving them a voice,” she said. Ms Mitchell moved to Williamstown in the early ’90s. Her award recognises her contribution to many local groups and programs, including as a founding member of the Hobsons Bay Refugee Network, secretary of the
Williamstown, Newport and Spotswood Residents Association, and co-organiser of the Loom Room craft hub and Conversations for the Curious discussion sessions at Williamstown Senior Citizens Centre. “I just think community is incredibly important and all levels of community need an opportunity to be with each other. “I suppose everything that I’ve done … is based on a need for people across the community to spend time with each other.” She described the recognition as humbling and overwhelming. “I grew up in a country town in a big family, so I’m just really trying to repeat the country town wherever I am, whether it’s a suburb or an organisation.” Goya Dmytryshchak

The 75-year-old said he had no plans to retire. “My first national championships in charge was in 1965 as a student, which amazed a few people; my last national champions was this year in Brisbane. “The music of the bands can be quite inspirational. “It graces memorial-type things, but it’s thoroughly enjoyable when the dancers are performing or when the bands are displaying their musical capacity, and that is a very pleasant thing to be involved with.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Victoria University students can put a rocket under their future lives via a new academy for aspiring leaders. Students involved in the VU Academy for Social Change and Leadership will this year become the first in Australia to be sent for a study tour to NASA in Houston, Texas. Budding entrepreneurs in the academy are eligible for mentoring and training via the VU Academy Activator, putting themselves in the running for $5000 funding in a ‘shark-tank’-style pitch event. The academy is directed by Associate Professor Thinh Nguyen, who said the idea was to help prepare VU students for life. “These projects enable students to develop leadership, entrepreneurship and 21st century
skills that will help them in their future careers and their day-to-day lives,” he said. The two-week study tour to NASA is expected to become a biannual activity for first-year students in science, engineering, technology or design. The trip, as part of the HASSE Space School, will provide access to exclusive areas within NASA. The launch of the academy comes as VU climbs to 53rd in the global rankings for universities aged under 50, as judged by the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2018. The category compares 250 institutions from 55 countries.

Brawl may end in a life ban
Brain cancer has a survival rate of one in five – so little wonder Erica Dunstan is making the most of her second chance at life. After suffering a grand mal seizure in 2015 and being rushed to hospital after passing out, Ms Dunstan found out she had a previously unidentified plum-sized mass in her brain. Her first bout of surgery removed about 95 per cent of the tumour, revealing grade three anaplastic astrocytoma – an aggressive brain cancer. Thus began the reconstruction of Ms Dunstan’s life – from the ground up. “I had to relearn all my words,” she said. “I’ve just been getting MRI scans every three months as well, now reduced to six months. So far so good.” Ms Dunstan, now 32, from Footscray, has used her new life in Melbourne as a chance to embark on further studies in psychology, with a view to a career in counselling. She also wants to raise awareness of brain cancer in Australia, so has decided to take part in the 10-kilometre run that is part of Run Melbourne in conjunction with the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. “I honestly believe that if you have the will power then you can accomplish anything that you set your heart to,” she said. “Growing up, I never did anything by halves … I think that the most wonderful things can come out of the most painful heartbreaks.” Run Melbourne will be held on July 29. A Yarraville man allegedly involved in a bloody brawl at Etihad Stadium has been charged by police and may be in line for a lifelong ban from the venue. The 69-year-old man has been charged with intentionally and recklessly causing injury and affray and bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on September 10. The brawl broke out on May 25 after Collingwood defeated the Western Bulldogs. At least nine people were involved in the fight. Police have also charged a 46-year-old man from Carnegie with recklessly causing injury, affray, possessing cocaine and resisting police. Etihad Stadium’s chief executive Michael Green said the 46-year-old man would be the first to ever receive a lifelong ban from the stadium. “We are working closely with Victoria Police to identify those involved,” he said. Etihad has yet to confirm if the charged Yarraville man will face the same ban, which not only bars entry to AFL games, but to all events at Etihad for life. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police had talked to stadium management about the venue’s security arrangements. “[Police] recommended that all aspects of how the stadium is managed for patron safety and security be reviewed,” she said.

Massive In Store Plastic rubbish found in Clearance Sale Willy’s stranded whale Plastic rubbish was found in the stomach of a pregnant whale that was euthanised after desperate efforts to save it, authorities said on Thursday. The 2.4 metre pygmy sperm whale was found on May 21, washed up in Jawbone Marine Sanctuary at Williamstown. Rescue crews tried to take the whale into deeper waters but it couldn’t swim unaided and was listing to one side. A post-mortem examination was conducted at Werribee veterinary school to determine what caused the whale to become beached. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Zoos Victoria urged the public to properly dispose of rubbish in the wake of the finding. “The findings of the plastic in this whale’s stomach is very disturbing and another timely reminder to the community and visitors to not throw plastic and other rubbish into the bay,” said Dr Michael Lynch, head of Melbourne Zoo’s Veterinary Services and AGL Marine Response Unit. “Zoos Victoria’s ‘When balloons fly, seabirds die’ campaign seeks to highlight how all types of plastics and foreign materials, including balloons and attachments, can end up on oceans and waterways, harming marine life and seabirds through ingestion and entanglement.” Altona marine ecologist Matthew McArthur, who recently returned from an Antarctic deployment, said volunteers with local Beach Patrol litter-removal groups regularly removed rubbish along Hobsons Bay’s foreshore. “Perhaps the more worrying part of the situation is that once an animal dies and decomposes, the plastic ingested by or

entangling the animal is still drifting along in the sea and can cause further problems,” he said. DELWP senior wildlife officer Suriya Vij said humpback whales had this week been seen in Port Phillip Bay on their annual migration up the east coast of Australia. “There are rules and regulations in place to protect both humans and marine mammals including recreational boats staying 200 metres away from a whale,” she said. “Penalties up to $3000 can apply to people that dispose of food or waste in the water within the caution zone of a marine mammal.” Sightings of whales in trouble should be reported to DELWP’s whale and dolphin emergency hotline on 1300 136 017. Good oil on urban olives By Goya Dmytryshchak Backyard and nature strip olive trees are being harvested for oil under a new project in Hobsons Bay. Morgan Koegel, head of the 3000acres not-for-profit organisation that develops community gardens around Melbourne, said Hobsons Bay council had provided a grant to kick-start the Olives to Oil project. Independent and community olive harvesting will take place on the weekend of June 16, with the olives to be pressed in bulk to make oil. Hobsons Bay participants will receive free olive oil in return for their time or donation of olives. “We identified that there are a lot of existing olive trees in Hobsons Bay that have already been mapped, that are producing olives, but not being harvested,” Ms Koegel said. “We then had the idea – what if it could be turned into olive oil? And found out that individuals can’t do that because the minimum quantity that can go through a large olive press is about 200 kilos, which is far above what an individual can do for themselves.” Altona Community Gardens committee member Peter Weaver praised the project. “I think it’s a brilliant idea,” he said. “It’s just touching the start of what can be done because there’s a lot of old people in Altona with fruit trees as well. Cop kick case back in court The policeman who was assaulted at Highpoint shopping centre on Boxing Day last year has told the County Court “it was a cold and calculated cheap shot”. The Senior Constable was on all fours trying to arrest a 15-year-old boy suspected of shoplifting when a 17-year-old boy kicked the policeman and bolted out of the centre. The kick caused bruising and swelling around the policeman’s left eye and, but for five millimetres, might have caused career-ending blindness. The teenager, who cannot be named, was granted bail and was later put on a nine-month probation order. He served 30 days in youth detention before he pleaded guilty to intentionally causing injury, after he had his bail revoked for breaching a court order. He was on probation when he kicked the policeman, for aggravated burglaries in 2016. The sentence a children’s court magistrate imposed has been appealed by prosecutors, who argue it is too lenient. The policeman told court last week he felt let down by the judicial system, but hated having his case used for political mileage. A prosecutor called for the teen to spend more time in custody to denounce his conduct, protect the community and deter him from future offending. The boy’s lawyer said the focus for a young offender should be rehabilitation. The case will return to court in six weeks. - The Age

Aircraft will be flying about 150 metres lower over Hobsons Bay under a plan to use new technology to guide planes into Melbourne Airport. Australia’s air navigation service provider, Airservices Australia, is seeking approval from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to allow aircraft to fly between 500 feet and 2000 feet from Altona South and Station Pier at Port Melbourne. Aircraft currently fly between 500 feet and 2500 feet over this area. Airservices Australia says on its website there will be no noticeable difference in noise. “The airspace changes are required to meet new regulations to safely manage incoming flights on approach to Melbourne Airport,” it says.
“The change requires aircraft to fly slightly lower (500 feet) during a small section of their final approach. Environmental assessments indicate there will be no discernible increase in aircraft noise on the ground.” It says there will be no changes to flight paths, but that more light aircraft may fly at lower altitudes. “In 2017, 12 per cent of the total number of light aircraft that fly along this route are between 2000 feet and 2500 feet, therefore residents may notice that some of these aircraft will be flying lower as a result of the airspace change,” it says. House fire fatality Towels left near portable heaters sparked a fatal fire that ripped through a house in West Footscray on Sunday, killing one woman and injuring another, according to authorities. Gaye Torney, 62, was found dead in her upstairs bedroom by firefighters early on Sunday morning. The Metropolitan Fire Brigade and paramedics arrived at the double-storey brick home on Clive Street at 12.20am. The blaze took a team of 40 firefighters almost an hour to bring under control. Ms Torney’s 69-year-old sister-in-law, Lesley Pace, also lived at the residence, the pair having moved in together after their husbands died. Ms Pace escaped the blaze via the front door and was admitted to Footscray Hospital early on Sunday morning with minor injuries.
Footscray police Detective Senior Constable Mark Abela said the fire appeared to have started when towels were left near two portable heaters in the living room. Authorities believed the cause of Ms Torney’s death was smoke inhalation. The two women regularly attended the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Parish priest Renato Ramirez said they were very active in the church community. “They were starting an initiative to help women in Africa … they have been there several times,” Father Ramirez said. Speed limit cut knocked back Authorities have rejected requests to cut the speed limit in Maribyrnong, including a stretch of a Footscray road that has recorded about 180 crashes in the past decade. Figures obtained by Star Weekly show there have been 178 recorded crashes on the 900-metre stretch of Ballarat Road between Farnsworth Avenue and Moore Street in the 10 years to the end of 2017, including 35 that resulted in serious injuries and four fatalities. Maribyrnong council last year wrote to VicRoads requesting a drop in the limit from 60km/h to 50km/h to improve safety along the arterial road, as well as stretches of Whitehall Road, Williamstown Road, Gordon Street, Van Ness Avenue, Farnsworth Avenue and Churchill Avenue. Data shows Williamstown Road had 49 crashes between Francis Street and Geelong Street, including 13 which resulted in serious injuries. Gordon Street, between Van Ness Avenue and Geelong Road, was not far behind, with 48 recorded crashes including 10 serious injuries. Whitehall Road, from Hopkins Street to Parker Street, recorded 25 crashes, including one fatality and seven serious injuries. Yet VicRoads will not cut the speed limit, and stated that speed limit changes were considered on a case-by-case basis, in line with expert evidence and community sentiment. VicRoads regional director Vince Punaro said despite the refusal, concerns about road safety were taken very seriously.
“We continue to work closely with the community on setting appropriate speed limits which balance safety and movement,” he said. Williamstown Road resident Graeme Hammond said his greatest concern was pedestrian safety. “There’s a school nearby, the Coles supermarket, bus stops – it is insane that 30-tonne trucks are roaring past them at 60km/h or higher,” he said.

“Because of their mass they have little capacity to actually stop in an emergency. A drop of 10km/h would make negligible difference to their travel time, but a huge difference in reducing the risk of injury and death and also noise.” Despite the setback, Maribyrnong council will push ahead with its own reductions on local roads, moving area-by-area to reduce the speed limits on all local streets to 40km/h. Acting director of infrastructure services Barbara Mitrevski said travelling at lower speeds improves a driver’s ability to stop and avoid crashes, especially in areas of high pedestrian activity. “Where crashes do occur they are less severe,” she said. New 40km/h zones will be rolled out within Yarraville and Seddon in the next 12 months.

Lucca ready to kick on Eleven-year-old Lucca Grego is the first boy selected in 16 years from Altona Primary School to play in a national sporting championship. He will be playing with the under-12 Victorian rugby league team at this year’s national championships. He started playing the sport at age four in Brisbane, before moving to Melbourne and joining the Altona Roosters. “One of my dreams is to become a professional rugby league player and just be an inspiration to little kids when I’m older,” Grego said. Grego has a few role models but singles out Melbourne Storm captain Cameron
Smith as “one of the best players in the league, currently”. The School Sport Australia Rugby League Championships will be held in Adelaide in August. “The competition will be pretty hard,” Grego said. “We’ll be playing the best of the best. “I’ll just go out there and have fun.” Grego could be following in the footsteps of rugby league star Gareth Widdop, 29, captain of the St George Illawarra Dragons who attended Bayside Secondary College and also played for Altona Roosters. Mr DiCesare has been shortlisted for the Principal of the Year (Non-Government School) in the Australian Education Awards, with the winner to be named at a ceremony in Sydney in August. The Australian Education Awards are the leading independent awards for the education profession in Australia. Mr DiCesare said the nomination was a nod of approval to the work of everyone at the Braybrook school. “It is an honour to be nominated, but more importantly to lead this vibrant and diverse community,” Mr DiCesare said. “They are at the heart of what we do. This nomination is the culmination of the hard work and dedication we have to learning excellence.” Since Mr DiCesare became principal in 2013, the college has had the biggest and most consistent growth in its history and improved its median study score and Better Education Ranking. In 2016, the college achieved a median study score of 30 for the first time, and in 2017 attained another 30-plus study score. Mr DiCesare said there had been significant changes at the school during his tenure, but he was most proud of the leadership of staff and students. “You can feel it as you walk around, that sense of optimism and that we’re going somewhere,” he said. “We’ve updated the school significantly in recent years to try and give students the best we can. “We have something like 60-plus nationalities, and that brings quite a lot of

An Altona Commonwealth Bank worker was taken to hospital after he came into contact with an unknown chemical substance that made his lips numb last week. Police are investigating after the bank was evacuated about 5.30pm on Tuesday as specialist Metropolitan Fire Brigade crews ran safety checks on the chemical discovered by the worker. Firefighters wearing splash suits were in the building on Tuesday evening, as they retrieved the chemical for sampling and isolation. Emergency services were called to the bank, on the corner of Pier and Blyth streets, after the 35-year-old man came into contact with a white powder and “complained of numbness to the lips”. A fire services spokeswoman said a small container that appeared to contain white powder was left on a counter inside the bank. “A man opened the container and smelt the contents,” she said. The man was decontaminated as a precaution by brigade crews and handed over to Ambulance Victoria. A Commonwealth Bank spokesman said police were leading the investigation. “The safety of our employees and customers is our priority,” he said. “We are assisting police with their inquiries.” – The Age

MY PLACE Former Age cartoonist and Williamstown resident John Spooner is appearing at his first Williamstown Literary Festival to talk about his book, What the Hell was he Thinking? John Spooner’s Guide to the 21st Century. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. I’ve lived here for over 10 years. I come, originally, from Black Rock and the children and the whole family used to ride our bikes to Williamstown for outings so we knew the Nelson Place cafe area and that was the in-point. When I came to move to Williamstown I discovered the other side, this beautiful side with the botanical gardens, the parks and the beach. That leads to my next question – what do you like about Williamstown? Williamstown is, dare I say it, one of the best-kept secrets in Melbourne. It’s a beautiful small town 10 minutes from the city. It doesn’t have any through traffic. It’s a precarious little secret because we don’t want too many people to know about Williamstown because we love it in its present state. The people are lovely. I call it a haven, and I think it is a sort of haven. When you think it’s only 10 minutes from the CBD, it’s astonishing compared with other places around the bay.

What would you change about Williamstown?
The Pickle Barrel. One of my favourite set of shops is The Circle group in Altona North – we are total converts to The Circle; there’s a good halal butchers there, which is terrific. My other favourite here is Wok Rite In. And there’s a great fish and chip shop right at the end of Ferguson Street, on the water … Top of the Bay. You get your fish and chips and you go to the carpark opposite and you look out on this glorious little boating harbour, with all those moored yachts and across to Melbourne, and that is heaven. If you have a beer and some fish and chips I don’t think it can get any better than that.
Nothing at all, it suits me just fine. Actually, I would love there to be an art gallery.

I’m still playing cricket and I’m 71.

It can be daunting for a player too, who, once called up from their local club, then have to get up to speed on a different game plan and re-introduce themselves to their teammates. There is no longer fluidity within the system for the player, which is a concern for Collins. “It’s been a real loss to us as a footy club,” he said. “It’s something that still remains a challenge that we haven’t conquered.” As for Bewley, he continues to tick all the boxes for Williamstown. A well-rounded player with elite skills, a good engine and strong defensively, he should be in consideration for AFL recruiters in drafts later in the year. “He’s just getting better and better with every game,” Collins said. “Him, Michael Gibbons and Ben Cavarra, there’s a lot of 22, 23-year olds with their best footy ahead of them.” Lance Jenkinson
IN THE DOGHOUSE While the AFL has its Look of the Game group pounding over ideas and suggestions to make our great game more pleasing to spectators, the world game will take centre stage for the next month with the World Cup in Russia. At its best, soccer is a game of precise skills, beautiful and fluid, with speed, guile and more than enough action. At its worst, like any game, it is stilted, defensive, boring and ugly to endure. While the Socceroos are not expected to go too deep into the competition it does not detract from the World Cup as an event or a spectacle. It is a perfect opportunity for the round ball game to recruit players and spectators and build for the future.

The Look of the Game is a big issue and while it is good not to have it as the elephant in the room, I do have concerns that go straight to grassroots level. The consensus is that the elite level game is not good to watch. Congestion is killing the pace and leading to the game, which was invented for big grounds, being played on a postage stamp. Strangely, we are teaching kids to play the AFL way. Every elite coach builds game plans on defence, yet to get drafted, kids are encouraged to rack up possessions, boost their stats. At AFL level their coach continues his defence mantra and chasing kicks is against team rules. Confused? The AFL is looking at introducing zoning and I am leaning that way too. It will bring positional play back into the game – one on one contests. The alternative is to coach and build game plans for positions, not zones.

Williamstown holds firm By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown got the pick-me-up it needed to end its mildly concerning two-game losing skid in the Victorian Football League. There was no better antidote for the Seagulls than to record a stirring 12-point victory over ladder-leaders Richmond in an absorbing contest at the Williamstown Football Ground on Sunday. It was the perfect way for the Seagulls to salute the much-loved stalwart Willie Wheeler in his 100th game. Seagulls coach Andrew Collins was not downplaying the importance of the victory, both in terms of his team’s place on the ladder and their reversal of form. “It was a really important game for us in the context of the season, more importantly about the way we’ve been playing,” he said. “It was a terrific effort by the players to beat a quality opponent. “It should bring a lot of confidence going forward.” It was a red hot contest from the outset with little to separate the two sides all day. Richmond kicked the first three goals of the game, then Williamstown responded with the next three. The goal-for-goal nature continued until late in the third quarter when the Seagulls posted three consecutive goals through Daylan Kempster, Lachlan Schultz and Ben Cavarra to bust the game open. Every time Richmond threw a punch in the form of a goal in the last quarter, the Seagulls would counter-punch with a goal of their own and keep a firm grip on the lead. Collins was pleased to see his team stand up in the pressure moments. “It was a really tight game, could’ve gone either way,” he said. “We had some better moments, better contests. “What has cost us in the past couple of weeks is that we’ve been in the contest and then we’ve just made a couple of errors that have been very costly, but I thought we minimised the errors in our game today.” Leigh Masters, with 22 disposals, seven marks and four tackles, was superb at centre half-back for Williamstown. Masters was constantly a roadblock to opposition attack and turned defence in attack for his own team. “He was outstanding,” Collins said. The versatile Brett Bewley continued his fine

Could the next Brett Bewley be lost in football’s ecosystem? That is the question Williamstown coach Andrew Collins was asking after Bewley produced another stellar performance in his side’s 12-point win over Richmond in the Victorian Football League on Sunday. Bewley’s scintillating form for the Seagulls only adds further weight to Collins’ belief that the VFL and the wider football development system in the state is poorer for not having the AFL Victoria Development League in operation this season. Bewley was one of the last generation of players to come through the now defunct development league competition and could well land on an AFL list next season should his form be maintained, but Collins fears the next player to follow in the footsteps of Bewley might be lost in the transition from the TAC Cup to the VFL. “Brett Bewley, Brayden Monk, Jake Grieser, just to name a few, these are all great stories in footy,” Collins said. “These are all guys that have played development league footy and I’m not sure they’d all come through the system if

Altona Magic has taken authority over the competition after a significant weekend for the leading teams in the National Premier League 2 west. Not only did the Magic record a 2-1 road win over Werribee City for their third straight victory, but second-placed Moreland Zebras left two points on the table in a draw with Ballarat City and third-placed St Albans Saints slipped with a loss to Whittlesea Ranges. It leaves the Magic four points clear at the top of the table and running into some of their hottest form of the season. “It has put us in a good position,” Magic coach Goran Lozanovski said. “For us to make a bit of a gap at the top and create a bit of breathing space, we have to be consistent. “We just need to capitalise over the next couple of weeks and get some more wins, especially at home, where we’ve got two home games coming up against Nunawading City and Sunshine George Cross.”
It was not all plain sailing for Altona. The Magic went a goal down to a desperate Werribee City after Jay Kelly scored to put the hosts in front at Galvin Park after 29 minutes. The lead was short-lived as Magic attacker Robert Stambolziev pounced to scored just three minutes later from a goal mouth scramble. Stambolziev, a former Australian under-20 international, who has been playing abroad in Greece, Cyprus and England and had a stint with Sydney FC in the A-League, is starting to show Magic fans why he is so highly rated. “He had a bit of a break since he came back from Cyprus, so he’s taken a few games to get back into it again, but he’s starting to look good,” Lozanovski said. “He’s a good technical footballer, he’s got a great left peg. He’ll get better and better each week.” The scoring dried up in the run-in to half-time, but it was not for a want of trying as Altona went in search of a leading goal. By Lance Jenkinson It has been a smooth transition for Footscray under new coach Darren Nicholas in the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league. Rolling out a new game and fresh ideas was likely to take a bit of time for the Bulldogs to adapt, but after a hiccup in the season opener, they have rattled off six consecutive wins to go into the Queen’s Birthday break in third place. Bulldogs president Tim Lane is pleased with the progress the team has made with a new leader at the helm. “We dropped our first game, but the constant improvement from week to week since then has been great,” he said. “We’ve managed to come out on top each of those weeks and we’re still looking to constantly improve throughout the year.” Footscray was a tricky place to arrive as a new coach. The Bulldogs have undoubted quality, a premiership level team, but they have narrowly missed out on the premiership each year since their 2013 triumph. From seasons 2014-16, the Bulldogs played off in three grand finals and lost all three, while last year was a disappointment as they bowed out at the preliminary final stage after going 18-0 in the home-and-away rounds. A little bit of tinkering was needed at Footscray, rather than an overhaul. Nicholas has so far been able to embed his philosophies and game style without upsetting the foundations from previous seasons. His experience at both state league level and internationally has probably helped the transition because there is barely a situation that he is not familiar with. “He’s been around lacrosse for a long time,” Lane said. “He’s played for Eltham for the majority of his career and won numerous premierships when they were right up the top and for the last part of his career he played for Williamstown. “He’s played in world championships, he’s played professionally in America and he brings his skills as a secondary school teacher, so he’s well-rounded. “He’s the ultimate professional and he’s been great for us so far.” If there is one aspect that Nicholas honed in on when he arrived at Footscray, it was improving the overall fitness of the side. If the Bulldogs are to go deep into the finals and feature in close games, he does not want fitness to be a determining factor from his side’s perspective. “Our main strength that we’ve improved on from previous years is our fitness,” Lane said. “He’s had a massive influence with that and a strong push to improve our fitness.” Despite the six-game winning streak, Footscray is still a work in progress and there is no talk of finals or premierships just yet.

The Bulldogs have entered two teams into the top flight competition with the first team in second place with a 4-1 record and their second side, named Footscray Green, in fifth with a 2-2 record. “It’s a revamped women’s competition this year,” Lane said. “We’ve got two teams in the top division, which is great.

Star fighter flying high Bailey Lewis is racking up the frequent flyer points in search of the grandest taekwondo mat of all. The target for the City West Taekwondo star is the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, but Lewis does not just want to make the Olympics, he wants to get on the podium. The 20-year-old from Werribee is leaving no stone unturned in his bid to achieve his dream. “Every day it’s two hours of training in the morning, two hours at night,” Lewis said. “That’s Monday to Friday and then two hours on a Saturday. It is a fair bit of training, but when you love the sport, you make it work. “I’m enjoying the journey, but I really want to win a medal at the world championships and the Olympics.” It is only June, but Lewis already has passport stamps in Holland, Bulgaria, United States and Italy this year alone in search of strong competitions. The Dutch Open was the highlight of Lewis’s career to date. He claimed a gold medal in the men’s 54-kilogram event in Eindhoven in March. “That’s a really hard open competition to win and I came through after a couple of really hard fights,” he said. In Rome, Lewis came close to upsetting the world champion. He lost by just three points in controversial circumstances. “There was a couple of issues with the shield where he was getting points by not even kicking, the points would just come up,” Lewis said. “We had to change the shields and they only took a few of the points off, so it might have been even closer if we hadn’t had any technical difficulties.
“It was a good fight, you learn a lot against opponents like that.” In 2017, Lewis travelled to England, Taipei, New Zealand, Belgium and Holland for competitions. The travel is a welcome distraction from his work at Subway and psychology and exercise science studies at Victoria University. “I can’t complain, it’s a good lifestyle,” he said. “I get to travel a lot and I’m getting to do something I love.” Lewis got his start in taekwondo under head instructor Frank De Pasquale at the Hoppers Crossing-based City West. De Pasquale has been by his side ever since and played an important role mentoring Lewis. “He’s had the biggest impact on me because he’s been my coach from the start,” Lewis said. “He wants the best for me and he’s taught me so much.” Lewis also benefits from having Adrian Abela as one of his training partners at City West. Abela is a world class taekwondo player who also competes at the grand prix and grand slam events with Lewis. Lewis is ranked 26th in the world in an Olympic class division and is hopeful of rising up the rankings in the lead-up to Tokyo. His next trip will be to Taipei next month for a grand prix event, before returning to Australia to compete at the nationals. Lewis is the June nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Lewis will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist him in achieving his sports goals.
