Altona classes all add up From next January, the school site will also be home to a new early years hub, partly funded by the government. The state has contributed $1.6 million to the Altona Early Years Hub while the council will contribute about $5.6 million. More than 198 places will be available at the hub, which will offer childcare for children up to six years, three and four-year-old kindergarten and maternal child health services. Friday’s announcement follows $53 million allocated in the 2018-19 state budget for the new Point Cook South Senior Secondary School set to open in 2020.

Altona P-9 College will enrol students up to year 12 by 2021, the state government announced on Friday. Under the plan, the school will be able to accommodate students enrolled in year 10 from next year, year 11 students from 2020 and year 12 students from 2021, Altona MP Jill Hennessy said. The extra school years will be accommodated on the current school site. Altona P-9 College was formed from an amalgamation between Altona West Primary
“My staff were beside themselves,” she said. “I told them this afternoon after school. “There were massive cheers and they were all – particularly our secondary teachers – very excited about what the future holds.” The college currently has 315 students. Education Minister James Merlino said the education department and Victorian School Building Authority would work with the college on transition arrangements. “Expanding Altona P-9 to include years 10, 11 and 12 gives senior students the extra option of staying on to complete their schooling,” Mr Merlino said.
School and Altona High School (later Altona Secondary School) about 10 years ago. Ms Hennessy said the school had plenty of room for senior students to stay on, with space for more than 300 additional enrolments. “Altona College is a great local school,” she said. “The time is right to give local students the ability to complete their secondary education at this school. “Our government is investing in schools in Altona and Point Cook so students and their families have the facilities they deserve.” Principal Julie Krause on Friday said she was ecstatic.

Altona Loop trains shut down By Goya Dmytryshchak Werribee line trains on the Altona Loop will shut down from 7.30pm on June 16 until July 30 as the level crossing in Kororoit Creek Road, outside the Mobil Altona refinery, is removed. Buses will replace trains in the Altona Loop, transporting commuters between Seaholme, Altona and Westona stations. Werribee line trains will run express between Newport and Laverton. The train line closure is because of a 43-day

There would also be some off-peak closures on the Werribee line between Newport and Werribee and some overnight closures of Kororoit Creek Road, according to the statement. A pop-up park, improved pedestrian safety and more development along Barkly Street are all on the cards for West Footscray. They form part of The West Footscray Neighbourhood Draft Plan, created to address a decade of rapid change in the area. A report, due to be considered at last night’s council meeting, stated that with further transformation expected in the area, a framework was needed to guide change. Community feedback has highlighted the need for better walking and cycling connections, open space in Barkly village, more trees, upgrades to open spaces and better quality development. The draft plan includes a concept design for a new “pop-up” style park, similar to that in Yarraville, closing off Clarke Street to traffic at Barkly Street. It outlines ways to improve public places and infrastructure, as well as highlighting preferred sites for housing to meet forecast growth. This includes more intense medium-density development. “Council will consider rezoning of sites within the activity centre,” the report stated. “Council will consider rezoning of sites fronting Barkly Street East and West Footscray Railway Station to allow opportunities for higher density. Building heights will range from four and six storeys along Barkly Street to eight storeys near the railway station.” Proposed works will be rolled out over the next 10-15 years. The draft plan will go out for further consultation before the final plan is adopted.

Erratic gas supply batters business A Yarraville trader says he has been forced to shut up shop during some of his busiest trading hours due to gas shortfalls. Under The Sea fish and chip shop owner Mal Elhouli said a sudden drop in gas pressure about 6pm on some nights has left him unable to keep his fryers going, leaving no option but to close his doors and turn away business. “I’ve been copping it for the last four years, but it has never been this early,” he said. Mr Elhouli said other restaurants on the Anderson Street strip were also experiencing problems, particularly once residential gas use kicked in.
“They promised me four years ago they would fix this and still nothing is done,” he said. “I cop it from 6pm to about 8pm. I’m worried about this week with the cold days coming up – if they are struggling now and it’s not even winter yet, what’s going to happen then?” Star Weekly last year reported inner-west residents had been shivering through winter nights as ageing infrastructure failed to keep up with the growing demand for gas. A spokeswoman for gas network owner AusNet Services said parts of its ageing infrastructure were being upgraded. “To date, a significant part of the network,
including parts of Seddon and Yarraville, have been upgraded from low-pressure cast-iron mains to the latest technology,” she said. “While most of Yarraville was upgraded under the program last year, there are two small pockets still to be completed.” Work to upgrade mains in Anderson Street and its surroundings will start in September and run through to March next year. The spokeswoman said the work was best conducted after winter “for safety and community wellbeing”.

Stun gun robber sentenced By Goya Dmytryshchak A man has received a four-year community corrections order and $2500 fine for committing armed robbery with a stun gun at Altona North. Mohammed Said, 21, pleaded guilty to three offences committed in December, 2016, at the victims’ home. The County Court heard the victims were Rob Hooli, then aged 39, and his wife, Hazal
Hooli, then aged 41, who were at home with their six-year-old daughter. They had advertised on the internet to sell an iPhone. The court heard Said entered the home with an accomplice on the pretext of being a buyer and had planned to sell the phone to buy Xanax. Judge Michael McInerney told the court that both offenders produced stun guns and used them on Mr Hooli, who they also punched. “Indeed, the prisoner [Said] held him down
with his knee so he could hit him in the head,” Judge McInerney said. The offenders tried to sell the phone online soon afterwards. Mr Hooli recognised his phone and the next day he and his brother turned up as “buyers” and confronted the two offenders. The court heard the perpetrators ran off and Mr Hooli called police to tell them the offenders had left their car behind. “Surprisingly, nothing was done by the
police in so far as investigating that situation or attending the scene,” Judge McInerney said. “Again, the court remarks that such actions by the police force, given the seriousness of this crime, are remarkable, and perhaps the least said about the police investigation the better.” The court heard that Said was finally identified by CCTV. In his sentencing remarks, Judge McInerney said Said had no priors and otherwise good character, and had expressed remorse.
A wasted opportunity MasterChef Emma Dean will be among star guests at Hobsons Bay’s annual event marking World Environment Day. The 2013 winner will be talking about avoiding food waste and sourcing food from sustainable suppliers. “This theme links well with the launch of Hobsons Bay’s Food Waste Avoidance Program, and is timely given the recycling reforms in China and the importance to avoid, reduce and reuse single use plastics,” Hobsons Bay councillor Sandra Wilson said. As reported by Star Weekly, Hobsons Bay residents are leading a charge to avoid single-use plastic and rubbish creation amid the council recycling crisis. As a result of China’s National Sword Policy, Hobsons Bay residents will be hit with waste collection fee hikes of 17 per cent, bringing the annual charge to $200. Also speaking at the World Environment Day event will be Port Phillip baykeeper Neil Blake and RMIT Professor and Altona resident

The event will have stalls from environment groups including Hobsons Bay Boomerang Bags, Altona Beach Patrol and Friends groups. It is on Sunday, June 3 from 1-4.30pm at Williamstown Town Hall. Other events throughout the week include Pete the Plumber and his pet drop of water, ‘Droppo’, visiting Altona Meadows library on Saturday, June 2, and Altona library on Tuesday, June 5. Inner west community groups are celebrating a funding windfall thanks to the annual Seddon Community Bank “Community Pitch”. A funding pool of $28,450 donated by 25 “pitch” partners was distributed to 18 community groups at the recent event, hosted by the Yarraville Club. Organised by bank branch owner Inner West Community Enterprises, the night gave groups the chance to pitch a project to local businesses, which then decided which projects they would support with their donation. IWCE spokeswoman Suzanne Saunders said the event featured a range of pitch styles. “Footscray City College flash mobbed, Yarraville Life Activities pitched with a poem, wit incorporated sang, the Ethiopian Community Association danced, Willing Older Workers baked, while others simply told their heartfelt stories,” she said. Ms Saunders said while the funding was an important part of the night, it was also about sharing what is going on in the community and the relationships that are built between like-minded people. “So many groups commented that they have met people in other community groups that can help them, businesses that can support them in ways beyond financial support.” The initiative has delivered about $85,000 to the community since 2015.

A man who lived in a forest for 10 years will visit Altona next week to speak about his uplifting memoir released on Monday. Out of the Forest by Gregory P. Smith details his harrowing childhood, bizarre experiences living on the fringes of society and his road to becoming a university academic. Growing up, Smith said his father was a violent alcoholic while his mother wasn’t maternal. As a child, he and his four sisters were left at an orphanage for two years before their parents returned for them. He left school at 14 and was in and out of detention. Wandering Australia’s east coast, he struggled with drug addiction, alcoholism and mental health before deciding about 1990 to retreat into the forest just outside Mullumbimby, north of Byron Bay. Smith said he was forced to leave the forest only because he was close to death. “I was very sick, I was going into psychosis,” he said. “My diet consisted of marijuana buds and creek-brewed beer. “I became a vegetarian in the forest because one of the things I did notice was that every time I ate a little marsupial or little critter, it disappeared; it wasn’t there anymore. So, I was eating my friends.” When he re-entered society, Smith said he was too sick to appreciate the adjustment period for a while. “But when I was well enough to realise that I was going to be a part of society again and I was actually looking to go and get a job, that’s when it really hit home,” he said. “Over a 12-month period, I applied for 40-plus jobs and I didn’t even get an interview,
so that was time for a reality check and so I sat down and asked myself what the problem was and did I really have a lot to offer.” So, he decided to learn. The boy who had left school at 14 eventually earned a PhD in Sociology and now teaches at Southern Cross University. He still lives in the forest but today owns a piece of it near Coffs Harbour.

Neon dogs in park lark The Neon Dog Park installation featured at White Nights in Melbourne and Ballarat will light up Williamstown for 10 nights. Melbourne artist Carla O’Brien created the eight individual neon artworks featuring dogs and puppies of different breeds and sizes. She got switched on to light art after visiting the Burning Man festival in Nevada in 2009. “The neon dogs each have their own personality and people will interact with them,” she said. Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair said the free art installation would be a huge drawcard. “During the first week of the school holidays,
take pride in Hobsons Bay’s new playful additions and bring your children and furry friends to pose with these beautiful, fun and cheeky works of art,” she said. The installation will open at Commonwealth Reserve on June 29 with a DJ performance in the rotunda and other special activities. The artworks will be on show at the reserve from 4-10pm each night. Tunnel fears granted a forum By Benjamin Millar Residents bracing for thousands more trucks rumbling through their streets when the West Gate Tunnel opens will have their concerns heard through a new study group. The state government’s Corridor Study Group will investigate safety and other issues in the Millers Road and Williamstown Road corridors. News of the group comes as western suburbs Greens MP Huong Truong announced a notice of motion to revoke the tunnel’s planning scheme amendment for a second time.
The tollway project is predicted to funnel 4000 extra trucks a day onto Millers Road and double truck traffic on Williamstown Road to 5000 trucks a day by 2030. The study group will also consider the impacts on Grieve Parade, Kororoit Creek Road and areas already covered by truck bans. Terms of reference provided to Star Weekly show the group will be unable to discuss existing issues along curfew roads or impacts directly resulting from construction of the tollway project. Chaired by VicRoads, group membership will be via invitation to stakeholders.
Community representatives will join a working group that will make recommendations to a steering group comprising VicRoads, local councils and other authorities for decision. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the inner-west community deserved to have a say. “They know these roads and we’re looking forward to hearing their ideas,” he said. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the group would help produce the best outcomes. “The tunnel won’t open until 2022, so we have time to consider ways to remove as many trucks from local roads and restore community amenity in the inner west,” he said.
The study group will operate from mid-2018 and meet every two months for at least 12 months. The Greens are moving to revoke the tunnel’s planning approval for a second time, after teaming up with the Liberals and Nationals in March to revoke the original amendment. Ms Truong said the fact Labor continued to push ahead without proper planning approvals showed complete disregard for Parliament. “Another toll road is going to create more pollution, more congestion, and comes at the cost of investment in public transport,” she said.
Plenty to cheer about A cheerleading squad from Williamstown North is smashing it on and off the field. Lifestyle For Kids principal Tracy O’Hare said the 22 girls, aged 14 to 19, performed their first routine to launch the Western Bulldogs’ AFWL mascot, Roxy, at Whitten Oval. They followed up with performances at two home AFLW games and the Western Bulldogs’ AFL match against Brisbane Lions at Etihad Stadium as part of the Women in Sport Mother’s Day round. Ms O’Hare said the cheerleaders were dancers who trained about 10 hours a week. “All the girls are current dancers at LFK so they do jazz or they do hip-hop,” she said. “We were asked by a colleague who works for the Western Bulldogs to put a cheer routine together. “Our choreographer is the dance captain for Melbourne Storm, so she had a good
understanding of how to put something out on a big stage. “We use lots of good empowering songs for women. “I’m really proud of them – they work as a team, they’re really positive. “We’ve got some really good role models in the older dancers in there who are inspiring for the ones on the younger level … there’s a lot of teamwork required.” The team is in training for the Cystic Fibrosis Community Care gala ball in July. Flynn’s mates take caring steps By Goya Dmytryshchak The community has rallied to support the family and friends of a young veterinary surgeon from Williamstown, in a bid to raise awareness of mental health struggles. A fundraising campaign, which included a walk attended by 400 people, has raised $26,000 for the R U OK suicide prevention charity in memory of Flynn Hargreaves. The campaign was started by his friend, Williamstown’s Jack Levitt.

“He was my age – 27 years old,” Mr Levitt said. “He was a qualified vet surgeon … he was living overseas in England and he’d been working over there for about 18 months. “So, he’d taken his work over there, which he was rapt with and seemed to be really enjoying. “He obviously had some mental health struggles – some people obviously knew about it towards the end – but he was, like many people, able to hide it and get on with his day-to-day life pretty well. “Losing someone that I was so close to and went to school with and have known for a long time – we all were just sitting around really thinking: ‘What do you do from here’?” Mr Levitt also lost a second cousin after Flynn’s death. “That was just like a double shock,” he said. “Someone else again, young, close to my age, and different set of circumstances, I suppose. But this propelled us even more to raise the awareness that people are all kind of fighting

their own fight and can’t do it alone … it even more amplified the fact that you’ve got to look out for people.” Mr Levitt said he was passionate about raising awareness that veterinarians appear to be at higher risk of suicide.
He said several studies have found veterinarians are up to four times more likely to take their own lives, compared to the general population. Mr Levitt said Flynn’s family had agreed R U OK was a good choice of charity to raise money in his memory.

History, art combine Most have heard of UK puzzle series Where’s Wally, but now there’s a new kid on the block Wally – Little Willy. Williamstown artist Daryl Fox has come out of retirement to create a series of 12 paintings of historic Williamstown scenes, as seen through the eyes of a little boy named “Willy”. Fox was commissioned at just 20 years of age to paint a portrait of King William to celebrate Williamstown’s centenary. The portrait has hung in the Williamstown Town Hall for nearly 50 years. His new series of a lad growing up in Williamstown is a collaborative effort with historian Geoff Dougall, who is responsible for the research behind the paintings. “Clad in a raincoat, hat and gumboots, Willy
was a familiar figure around the town on weekends in a time when the Depression gave little scope for the things kids take for granted today,” Mr Dougall states in his description of the fictitious character. “He is like a ‘Where’s Wally’ but he’s there and he’s the spirit of Williamstown; the spirit of being brought up in Williamstown as kids.” Subjects of other paintings will include the Point Gellibrand lighthouse, which was destroyed in 1976, and the building of the Timeball Tower in the 1840s. Victoria Police has vowed to work on building trust with young LGBTI people after a report revealed only half of those surveyed would report a hate crime. Launched at Footscray Police Station on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT), the report found almost six in 10 young LGBTI people surveyed did not believe police understand their issues. Almost 95 per cent of respondents said they had experienced some sort of discriminatory abuse in their lifetime.
Priority communities division commander Stuart Bateson said the report will help police better understand young LGBTI people and their interactions with and attitudes towards police. “In recent years, Victoria Police has taken many steps to improve its relationship with LGBTI communities,” he said. “In 2016, the organisation took this further when it commissioned a report to boost its understanding of these interactions.” Commander Bateson said the report by GLHV (Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria) identified a clear opportunity for greater training to officers on LGBTI issues.
“The better an officer understands the issues facing young LGBTI people, the more willing and able they are to engage with young people in respectful and positive ways.” The report made 20 recommendations including increased training on LGBTI issues as well as recruitment strategies to increase LGBTI diversity within Victoria Police. Commander Bateson said Victoria Police would adopt all of the recommendations. “Victoria Police’s participation in events on important days such as IDAHOBIT is another way to demonstrate to both the wider community and our employees that they are supported, respected and celebrated.”
A Victory for Braybrook Aspiring soccer stars have been getting a kick out of a free weekly football program in Braybrook. A-League champions Melbourne Victory have teamed with Victoria Police for the 10-week program at Skinner Reserve. The soccer skills sessions and matches run from 4.30-6pm Mondays, rounded out with a free barbecue. Melbourne Victory’s role in helping build bridges between Victoria Police and young people living in the west will be further strengthened as part of the $10 million redevelopment of Footscray Park and Robert Barrett Reserve as the home of the club’s W-League and Academy squads. Artwork with meaning Galvin, who discovered her Aboriginal roots in 2013, said the message behind the painting was “of two cultures coming together as one”. Galvin’s great-grandmother was born November 9, 1876, near Manus, New South Wales. It appears she was part of the stolen generation and went by the name of Bridget Winifred Batson, nee Parsons. She raised her 10 children on a farm. Senior Sergeant Allen said the art would hang in the main foyer of the station “as a symbol to anyone coming into the station of Victoria Police’s commitment to strengthening our partnerships with the Victorian Aboriginal community”. An indigenous artwork was unveiled at Williamstown Police station on Monday to mark National Reconciliation week, which runs until June 3. Senior Sergeant Chris Allen revealed the painting at an event attended by Indigenous elders, Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair and other members of the community. “This artwork is particularly meaningful for us as it was painted by one of our talented employees,” Senior Sergeant Allen said. “Jena Galvin, one of our employees, has generously loaned the artwork.” The painting depicts the first fleet, a soldier and an Aboriginal man on a background of bush, desert, sky and sea. It also features a pelican, symbolising Hobsons Bay.

Oh, that’s easy … what everyone likes, really – the beach. I just love the beach and nature, the space. I think that was really what attracted us because we were looking at living close to the beach somewhere. I feel so comfortable here. I love the space and nature and the walking and the people. The people are just beautiful and helpful. What would you change? The smell of the beach in the hot weather. But they’re actually doing some redevelopment work and they’re adding all this sand, so I think that might help that problem. And the other thing is the frequency of trains for residents. I really was quite distraught when they created Laverton station as the key train for residents, and so not all trains are going through the Altona area anymore. I mean, I understand we have to accommodate for the increasing population further out west, but I still believe we should also retain what we have. You live in an area – you don’t expect to have less … I think it’s really important for the residents to feel that they matter and there are those services for them, especially now that we have so much traffic going into the city in the morning. What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery? I’ll just go Pier Street, because I love Pier Street. And what I love about it is that it’s a lovely vibe; it’s not too crazy and noisy. There’s a nice
calmness to it. There’s a lot of local shops you can go to and a lot of lovely restaurants and new ones that are coming up, too. I love Creme for breakfast; I think that’s probably a local hangout for quite a few people. I love Mosaic for dinner. And there’s one that I really like … Harmony, the Vietnamese restaurant. I love Tom [an employee], who’s so friendly when you go in there … he makes you laugh and he makes you feel like you’ve known him for years. The food’s lovely, too, but just having that lovely friendly service is great. Can you tell me about your passion for working with children? I suppose my passion for children led to the work that we do with children and educators and schools and families … children deserve the best future we can give them. We need to nurture them, we need to learn from them. A lot of the time, we think we’ve got it right because we keep focusing on what we had. But in actual fact, our children are living a different life now, so their lives have changed and society’s changed and we need to be listening to what they truly need today … ensure that we understand the child holistically – we call it human literacy. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you? English is my second language. I started year prep with no English at all. I was born in Greece – I came to Australia when I was four years old.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir tries a beef rendang that’s in a club of its own There are many interesting things for us to try when we return to Spice Klub. On the menu are noodles, rice, desserts and more. But it’s going to be tricky, because I simply can’t see us hitting Spice Klub without ordering the beef rendang. It is brilliant – and I strongly suspect those with a deeper knowledge of, and experience with, Indonesian food will concur. Called here rendang sapi, it costs $13 and is served with plain rice. In modern parlance, this meat would be referred to as “smashed” or even, heaven forbid, “pulled”. But let’s go old-school and refer to it as cooked down. It is meat of high quality; no gristle or globs of fat. It’s quite sweet, has a nice chilli kick and is just sufficiently oily for the recipe to work. Best of all, the flavour is a full-on orchestral blast of blended spices. Gosh. Bennie and I do good with the rest of our meal, too, though unsurprisingly not quite as spectacularly. Lumpia semarang (chicken and prawn spring rolls, $10) are gorgeously lumpy in a way that denotes house-made food. The chunky prawn and chicken mince inside, quite fishy in flavour, is equally rustic. It’s served with a crunchy mix of toasted coconut, chilli and salt, along with a sticky soy/chilli concoction. It’s enjoyable, though probably better categorised as an entree than as a main. Despite Spice Klub’s official address being on Ballarat Road, it’s actually on the strip of shops on Gordon Street familiar to all in the inner west as home to … not much. But now there’s a cool Indonesian joint in place, hopefully we’ll be more frequent visitors to the neighbourhood. Bizarrely, given the technicolour multitude of food riches in Melbourne’s west, Spice Klub is – as far as we can ascertain – our only Indonesian restaurant. Style outdoor areas. The addition of new cushions on outdoor furniture can make a big impact, making the outdoors feel more liveable. 5. Indoor plants are affordable, easy to maintain and brighten up a living room or bathroom. And they can be taken to the seller’s next home.

Footscray led at every change against Collingwood in the Victorian Football League on Saturday, but not when it mattered most – at the final siren. The Bulldogs were overrun by 32 points in a disappointing finish at the Whitten Oval. They took an 11-point lead into three-quarter time, but the Magpies were irresistible in the final term, banging on eight goals to one to leave the home side in their wake. Will Hayes continued his strong form for Footscray, collecting 26 possessions, while Lewis Young had 26 disposals to go with a team-high 13 marks. Lukas Webb (31 disposals) and Mitch Wallis (26) were two shining lights on their returns from the AFL, while defender-movedforward Fletcher Roberts and crumber Mitch Honeychurch kicked two goals apiece. Footscray has tumbled to 10th on the ladder and face an important game against Essendon at Whitten Oval on Saturday from 6pm. Williamstown had a tough day at the office in a 34-point loss to Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.
The Seagulls could only manage five goals for the game – two coming off the boot of forward Sam Dunell. football scribes believe the Bulldogs are in a world of pain and their season, as far as finals are concerned, is shot to bits. They may well be proved correct, but the vulture mentality of the AFL press corps is not healthy for the game. While the press is not paid to be an AFL cheer squad, I also see little value in the nature of many of their attacks on coaches and players. I would love to see a panel of coaches watching a press conference and passing judgment on the performance of each journalist or marking their stories out of 10 for accuracy, flair and fairness. How about a group of coaches calling for a football writer to be sacked or claiming he or she has lost his workmates the way scribes say coaches have lost the players? I doubt we will see a football writer resign because sales of the paper are down, but the future of an AFL coach is a constant source of speculation. The same scribes who lauded Luke Beveridge two seasons ago are now questioning his methods and ability.
Congratulations to the Williamstown VFLW team, which notched up its historic first win last weekend by beating Richmond. Williamstown is a club that has been through the ringer but has always come out the right end of the equation.

Lopsided results in any sport are cause for concern and uncompetitive thrashings create questions about the commitment of players, especially in a sport played in the cold and wet of winter. The first year of the WRFL women’s competition is facing that challenge. Hopefully, the players understand that Rome wasn’t built in a day – nor are strong, competitive football teams.

While females are flocking to the game, the same can’t be said of the male population, especially at the top end of the underage competition, with only six teams in the WRFL under-19s. Obviously, a big percentage of this age group is playing senior football, but in recent years the drop off in teams and numbers has been dramatic. The recent win by the representative under 19 teams shows there is no lack of talent, but the depth and interest has fallen off. Jobs, study, relationships and life kick in at this age and sport gets dropped down the priority list. It is a problem the game needs to address and solve.

The Blues returned home with a point from a 1-1 draw with Point Cook in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 3 at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday, but that was not enough to appease coach Slobode Stojcevski. A raft of gilt-edged chances missed made for a frustrating day for the Blues, who have drawn their past three matches – all games that Stojcevski saw as winnable. “Every game we approach with a view of trying to win … home or away,” he said. “We missed a lot of easy opportunities. “From that perspective, it was not satisfying … we should’ve won the game today.” It was not a game in which Williamstown totally dominated the ball. “The game itself was fairly even,” Stojcevski said. “It was a battle throughout the whole game and you’ve got to give Point Cook credit – they fought really hard. “We happened to create five or six clear-cut opportunities where it was one-on-one with their keeper. “The chances were in our favour and we blew them and blew the points because of that.” Williamstown went down early to a goal from Point Cook’s Jonathan Dunn. Dunn’s goal celebrations had barely died down when Williamstown hit back through Gorgi Niceski. “It was literally from the kick off,” Stojcevski said. “They tried to push high and press us and we just went over the top and caught them out. “Gorgi struck it from the edge of the box. It was a really good finish.” The goals totally dried up thereafter. Williamstown’s defence was in command, allowing Point Cook only long-range shots.
Blues defenders Adam Cefai and Ed Southerington were rock solid and goalkeeper Kier Zerner took care of any shots. “I think the difference in the game was our central defensive group,” Stojcevski said. “While it was an even game, we were able to snuff out every thrust they made and we were creating opportunities on the other side.” Williamstown is still neither here nor there, sitting sixth with three wins, three draws and three losses. The Blues can apply pressure on the top five clubs if they can notch a win over Upfield at JT Gray Reserve on Saturday. Meanwhile, Altona Magic will take on Northcote City in the quarter-final stage of the FFA Cup tonight (Wednesday) at Paisley Park from 7.30pm. If the Magic is successful, it will get a ball into the pot for the national round of 32, where it could be matched up with interstate or A-League opposition.

Devils still searching for four-quarter performance Six rounds into the season and reigning premier North Footscray is still searching for consistency in Western Region Football League division 2. The Devils are well positioned in third place, have a sky-high percentage of 154.46 and are yet to even roll out a side that resembles their strongest. But playing coach Jonathan Miller is irked by his side’s inability to get going for four quarters. A 69-point thumping of Newport Power at Hansen Reserve on Saturday was a prime example as the Devils did not click until well into the third quarter. “We’re still only playing patchy football,” he said. “I’m hoping to improve that consistency … in saying that, we haven’t been able to get our best side on the park as of yet. “That’s just the high expectations we’ve put on the side this year.” A focus at North Footscray has been forward line efficiency. The Devils are blessed with more gun forwards than most sides, but Miller knows it’s important to have them working well as
a unit and within the team structure. Miller wants to see shots taken from better positions to increase the probability on the conversion. It was like chalk and cheese for North Footscray from the first half to the second half in the win over Newport. In the first half, the Devils played selfish football and blazed away for a return of 8.7. After half-time, they produced a brand of football more to Miller’s liking and kicked an accurate 12.3. “We went back to the way we wanted to play our football and that was run and carry the footy and lower the eyes and not try to be selfish,” Miller said. Reece Duffield was strong in the ruck, feeding midfielders such as Brayden Montebruno and Rylan Williams. Montebruno claimed best afield honours for his ability to win the contested ball and get a second possession. Tyren Montebruno was the star up forward with five goals, while Williams completed a strong game with three of his own. Mission accomplished By Lance Jenkinson Altona Gators spent a week preparing Operation Emmanuel Malou and executed their plans to perfection in an upset 84-79 win over Melton Thoroughbreds in the Big V basketball men’s division 2 at Altona Sports Centre on Sunday. The Gators knew they could not afford to give Malou any freedom on the court, so they studied ways to defend the athletic big as early as their first training session of the week and then rolled out a team defence on game day to limit his impact. Malou finished with 12 points – well down on his season average of 19 and significantly fewer than the 28 he scored against the Gators earlier in the season. Gators’ coach Des Radoslovic described it as a successful mission from his team. “We did a video session at the start of the week that was longer than normal,” he said. “We prepared so many specific things for today’s game and we really executed. “They’ve got their import Dexter Graham and they’ve also got Emmanuel Malou, who was a borderline NBA player and is actually about to sign to play for the Cairns Taipans in the NBL, so he’s the one we targeted. “If he gets off the leash you’re in trouble, but we just crowded him, any time he got the ball on the inside, we doubled him.” Altona got the jump on the visitors with a 28-17 opening period. Melton, who rode a three-game win streak into the game, plugged away for the next two periods and wound up near on parity at three-quarter time. While the Thoroughbreds threatened, Altona had all the answers. That was the most pleasing aspect for Radoslovic, not only were the Gators defensively astute, but they also executed their own offensive plays. “We executed exactly the way we planned,” he said. “They kept fighting back but we were the more disciplined team in the end.” Young Altona point guard Nathanael Coory was the key to his team’s play in the late game situations. Coory was both provider and finisher en route to 17 points, four rebounds and three assists. “He’s a five-foot-10 point guard going up against these monsters and he still controls the game,” Radoslovic said. “He made some really key plays. “Even though Nate is only 17, you just trust him when he’s got the ball in his hands.” Altona goes nowhere near causing an upset without James Till in the paint. Till was the only Gator equipped to bang bodies with the Thoroughbreds bigs, so he stayed in the game for 37 of the 40 minutes,

City West Falcons are knocking on the door of the Victorian Netball League championship division top four after a 52-39 win over Ariels at the State Netball and Hockey Centre last Wednesday. The Falcons were eager to atone after a heavy loss to ladder leader Melbourne University Lightning the week prior and did so with a commanding go-to-whoa win. Kath Knott fired in 25 goals from 30 shots for the Falcons, while Tahnysha Salanoa impressed with 21 from 22 attempts. The Falcons will have a chance to close the gap on the top four even further when they face winless Soveriegns at the SNHC tonight (Wednesday) at 8.20pm.

Who can stop Footscray in the Hockey Victoria women’s premier league? The Bulldogs are now a perfect eight-from-eight after cruising to a 4-1 win over finals contender Essendon at the Essendon Hockey Centre. Monica Singh and Esther Fithall scored two goals apiece for the Bulldogs. Footscray will travel to play fourth-placed Southern United on Saturday. In men’s premier league, Altona crushed Toorak East Malvern 6-1 at Hawthorn-Malvern Hockey Centre. Andrew Scanlon was on target for the Seagulls with four goals.

master class, but also provided 13 crucial points. The victory has breathed life into Altona’s season. They are 4-8, but only two games out of the finals picture. “Today was season on the line,” Radoslovic said. “We left it all out there and did everything we could to get the win. “If we win next week against Sherbrooke, we’re back in the mix and competing with the teams for the spots in the bottom of the six. “This becomes our most important game now.”
Williamstown eased to a 22-6 win over Altona in the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league local derby at PJ Lynch Reserve on Saturday. The Fearons extended their lead at every break with Josh Ardossi on fire with seven goals and Kade Robinson throwing in six. It keeps the Fearons riding high in second spot on the ladder, while Altona is stuck at the bottom. Footscray had a nail-biting 10-8 win over Camberwell with Chris Plumb leading the way with three goals. In women’s premier division, Abbey O’Mahony and Jemma Hunter scored five goals apiece in Williamstown’s 21-3 thrashing of Surrey Park. The Towners are on top of the ladder on the percentage from Newport, who had the bye.
