Ruff start to a new life

Winston the black labrador puppy escaped from his Braybrook home in November last year. His devastated owner, Tracey Luu had only brought him home four days earlier and moved heaven and earth to find her missing companion. She put up posters around the area, posted on various missing pet Facebook groups, checked with the lost dogs home and local vets, but could not find Winston. That is, until her phone rang earlier this month. “I picked up the phone and the lady on the other end told me they’d found Winston and to call the council,” Ms Luu said. “When I rang the council the lady on the other end could barely understand me because I was crying. “It’s a miracle.” Winston was found wandering around St Albans by police and while he’s spent six months away, he still remembered Ms Luu. “He definitely remembered me. He ran up to me really excited,” she said. While the story had a happy ending, Ms Luu said it could have been different had she not had Winston microchipped. “Without the microchipping, he wouldn’t have come back to me,” she said. B-double backflip anger Maribyrnong council is under fire for blaming too much paperwork in justifying rule changes that have opened the floodgates to an influx of B-double trucks. Parents at Kingsville Primary School and nearby residents say that since blanket approval for B-double trucks to use Somerville Road has been granted, it has become inundated with trucks measuring up to 26 metres long, including during school drop-off and pick-up times, which are subject to a curfew. Glen Yates said parents had been left scratching their heads as to why the council would make it easier for B-doubles to use a route from which it had earlier pushed to have trucks entirely banned. “You look at the size of those things when they are thundering through – they are significantly larger than what we are used to,” he said. While Somerville Road has long been a route for “over dimensional vehicles” that cannot fit on other truck routes in the area, operators had to obtain a permit from the council each time they wanted to use the road. Samantha McArthur said the council had previously argued strongly for trucks to be banned from Somerville Road due to the number of schools in close vicinity. “Now, inexplicably, the council has done a massive backflip,” she said. “These huge trucks do not need to be there and the fact that they are now running rampant … demonstrates exactly why we need a permit system in place.” VicRoads heavy vehicle services director Eric Henderson said Maribyrnong council had last year asked for all B-double trucks to be allowed to travel on Somerville Road at all times other than during curfews. Maribyrnong council chief executive Stephen

Wall said the request was made “to reduce the administrative burden on council” due to the number of requests being made. He said heavy vehicles were required to comply with restrictions on the road such as curfews, load limits and vehicle dimensions. “The pre-approved B-double route along Somerville Road will be reviewed in June following its expiration,” he said. “The review of the pre-approved route will take into account the substantial developments that are taking place in the municipality, such as the West Gate Tunnel project and City West Water project.” It is believed councillors were unaware of the request to abolish the permit system.

Yarraville asbestos test fears By Benjamin Millar Workers allegedly exposed to asbestos at a Yarraville company more than a year ago have raised questions over the handling of the incident. It’s taken 15 months for a report which should have taken five days to be provided on the incident, according to the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union. It argues the report is flawed because nobody consulted the affected workers.

Routine testing of marble chip being used at CSR Gyprock in February, 2017, identified asbestos within the sample. A 1200-kilogram bag of the raw material had already been loaded into a hopper for mixing. Star Weekly understands at least two workers were allegedly exposed to dust from the raw material before work was halted and the bag removed. The union said workers were told samples would be sent to a lab in Western Australia for stringent testing. Workers spent the following months chasing

the results, but the testing had instead been carried out in Melbourne and they were denied a copy of the report. The workers pushed for further testing in Western Australia and involved the union. The Western Australia report was provided to the workers this month. A CSR spokeswoman said that as soon as site management became aware of the initial test result, the material was quarantined and removed. She said an independent safety report confirmed that any exposure by employees

would have been negligible. “In response to further requests for information, we undertook another more comprehensive independent expert review, which confirmed the verbal advice we had received, and which we then shared with employee representatives,” she said. “Despite the raw material being tested by four independent experts, no conclusive result was determined.” Airborne asbestos fibres can cause potentially fatal conditions that can take more than 30 years to develop.

Five men have been charged over the alleged trashing of a short-stay rental property in Footscray earlier this month. Police were called to the Ryan Street property following reports of an out of control party about 7.30am on May 6. They say the property was damaged internally and externally. Police executed warrants last Wednesday, arresting and charging a 20-year-old Wollert man, an 18-year-old Point Cook man and an 18 year-old Deer Park man with criminal damage. A 20-year-old Truganina man who handed himself in to police last Thursday was charged with theft. A 17-year-old from Sunshine West handed himself in to police on Friday and was charged with criminal damage. He has been bailed to appear at a children’s court at a later date.

Members of the public meet at Altona pier at 5pm and take the plunge into the ocean. Some people might say he’s crazy. “Actually, everyone says that,” Mr Wasiek said. “But it’s just that there’s so many healthy benefits. I say you’re actually crazy not to do it.

“The big one is that it boosts your immune system.” The practice is uncommon in Australia but popular in many other countries. “Especially where I’m from – I’m Polish background,” Mr Wasiek said. “But that part of the world – Sweden, Finland – they all do it.” He said people built up their endurance and adapted to the cold water. “We start with five minutes and then we slowly build up to 20 minutes,” Mr Wasiek said.

Keilor man on robbery counts A 29-year-old Keilor man has been charged with two counts of armed robbery after he allegedly held up a Braybrook store and the West Footscray post office armed with a machete. Police allege the man was responsible for an attempted armed robbery at a business on South Road in Braybrook about 3pm last Wednesday, before demanding cash from staff at the West Footscray post office about 3.20pm. The man has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on August 9.

The newly formed Yarraville Library Writers’ Group is inviting writers of every stripe to meet regularly to discuss all things written word. The group will be officially launched next Tuesday night as part of a workshop with acclaimed author Anna George exploring the question “How to Write a Gripping Story”. George said she had been writing for 25 years after originally setting out on a career as a lawyer. Her 2014 literary thriller, What Came Before, was set in Seddon, drawing on her time living in the area.

While next week’s workshop is already booked out, George said there were key elements to writing a gripping story. “I talk about a ‘page turner’ having a big, fresh idea, involving characters and a story designed to keep the reader interested to the end,” she said. Second chance for old trams By Erin Pearson/The Age They were once the city’s workhorses, rattling yellow and green trams responsible for the safe transport of thousands of patrons. Now, more than 100 ageing vehicles gathering dust in a Newport rail yard will be given a new lease on life as part of a novel plan to celebrate the city’s transport history. As part of Victoria’s retired trams strategy, 134 trams previously resigned to retirement will be offered to rail enthusiasts for cafes, classrooms and other attractions in the hope of preserving the iconic trolleys.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said schools, community groups, not-for-profit organisations and other public institutions would be able to access a tram for free under the new plan. “Over the years, trams have transported millions of Victorians, connected our communities and are an integral part of our rich heritage,” Ms Allan said. “These Victorian icons will now be available to come to life once again and preserved for future generations to enjoy.” The rare opportunity is the first time such a large number of the heritage vehicles will go up

for grabs, years after the robust rattlers graced the city streets. The tender process will ask people to explain how they’d restore, repurpose and maintain one of the trams, including the iconic W-class trams. For Public Transport Users Association president Tony Morton, bringing the old favourites back into public use was an important historical step. “In the past we’ve called for them to be pressed back into service but we recognise that horse has bolted, given the W-class trams don’t meet modern accessibility standards,” he said.

“We’re moving on, we’re evolving into a 21st century light rail system, following big European cities. “It’s important they do find good homes and see a second life.” Of the 237 retired trams, 134 will be made available to the public as part of the expression of interest process from May 28 and close on July 6. Interest in the trams will then be assessed by an independent panel, giving priority to trams that will remain accessible to the public. All applications for the expression of interest must be made through the VicTrack website.

Western battleground Black Hawk helicopters are doing high-speed runs over rooftops in Melbourne’s west as part of the army’s urban counter-terrorism training. The Australian Defence Force will conduct exercises during May, including night flights without lights and firing blank ammunition. A Defence spokeswoman said the training would test the skill of army personnel in responding to simulated terrorist scenarios around critical infrastructure. “Residents may see or hear Black Hawk helicopters, military vehicles and soldiers carrying weapons and tactical equipment during the conduct of the exercise,” she said. “Some of the training involves low-flying helicopters, which can generate some unavoidable noise. “Certain parts of the training will also involve the use of blank ammunition and other pyrotechnics.

“This exercise is part of the regular training program and residents should not be concerned if they hear or see these activities occurring.” Local police are involved in the exercises, which aim to provide realistic training in built‐ up areas in the event of a civil emergency. It is understood helicopters will operate out of the Point Cook RAAF base but training specifics aren’t publicised to protect operational tactics, techniques and procedures. Flight routes and activity locations are chosen to minimise noise disturbances, the spokeswoman said. “The ADF thanks the public for their patience and co-operation while this essential training is being conducted,” she said. “The training poses no threat or danger to the public.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Photographer snaps pub hug for the win An image capturing a tender embrace in the humble local pub has taken out the top prize in the west’s premier photographic competition. Photographer Nathan Stolz collected the $3000 first prize in the Picturing Footscray competition for his portrait Footscray Embrace, a fleeting moment in time caught in the old-school Footscray Hotel. A master of fine arts student at the Victorian College of the Arts, Stolz is working on A Long and Winding Road, a project exploring Australian identity in the modern age. Second prize of $1000 was awarded to Pier Carthew for Advance, capturing a Footscray streetscape slated for high-rise apartment development. The $500 third prize went to Shannon McDonald for a portrait of seven-year-old Caleb by the Bunbury Street Bridge. Neighbour loses assault appeal By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona man who punched his neighbour after being charged with playing loud music has taken his fight all the way to the Supreme Court. In early 2014, Michael and Melinda Gwin, together with their children, moved to Altona. The plaintiff, Jason Richards, lived nearby in the same street. The Gwins complained, initially to Mr Richards, then to Victoria Police and Hobsons

Bay council, that Mr Richards played music at excessive volume. In early 2015, Mr Richards was charged and later convicted of four counts of emitting unreasonable noise from his house. The Magistrates Court of Victoria heard that during an interaction in December 2014, Mr Richards allegedly punched Mr Gwin in the jaw. Mr Richards was charged with assault. Mr Gwin testified that about 5pm on December 29, 2014, he was walking down his driveway intending to move his car.

He said Mr Richards was walking past and said something before grabbing him by the throat. Mr Gwin yelled to his wife inside their house to call the police. He told the court that when Mr Richards “came back at me”, he attempted to knee Mr Richards away to protect himself and Mr Richards then punched him to the face. After his application for an adjournment was refused, Mr Richards left the hearing. In his absence, the assault charge was proven

and Mr Richards was convicted, given a monetary penalty and ordered to pay costs. Mr Richards appealed the conviction and fine in the County Court. After the assault charge was proven on appeal, Mr Richards withdrew his appeal against the fine. He then appealed to the Supreme Court for the order made in the County Court to be quashed. Supreme Court judge Andrew Keogh this month dismissed Mr Richards’ application for review, concluding that it was “without merit”.

Beaut uke for Dhaka This year’s Newport Folk Festival will provide a boost for a music program at a Bangladesh school. Festival dirtector Michael Stewart visited Dhaka’s Friends of the Poor People School in 2009. Mr Stewart said visiting the school, and seeing the conditions in which the children lived, broke his heart. Since then, he and Newport Fiddle and Folk Club member Kerry Duke have been providing the school with hand-made ukuleles. Mr Duke said he had made 20 ukuleles at Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed for the school. “It gave me great pleasure to be able to travel to Dhaka in the last two years to deliver the ukes and also teach some of the children to play them,” he said. “To see the smiles on their faces when they accomplish a song is something to remember.” This year, the club will raffle a ukulele at the festival, which will be held from June 29-July

1. Raffle tickets will be available from the Newport Bowls Club in the month leading up to the festival. Mr Stewart said the aim was to raise $1000 for the school to invest in more instruments and teachers to develop the children’s skills. “These skills are not only important for the pleasure that the children receive and that they provide their audiences,” he said. “When the children are strong and confident players, they will be able to become music teachers and earn much more money than they would in the slums. So the money raised will really change the lives of these very poor children.” The festival will be held in and around the Newport Bowls Club, RSL club, Scout hall and The Substation. Local leaders in list honour

By Goya Dmytryshchak When a young person ends up in police custody in Melbourne’s west, Wyndham Vale’s Steve Turner could get the call. A volunteer with the Youth Referral and Independent Person Program (YRIPP), he attends police interviews when a parent or guardian isn’t available. He is one of the estimated 80,000 volunteers in Melbourne’s west whose contribution to the community is being recognised during National Volunteer Week from May 21-27.

Greens senator and former Maribyrnong mayor Janet Rice and Hobsons Bay deputy mayor Tony Briffa have been named on Deloitte’s list of “Outstanding 50 LGBTI leaders” in Australia, compiled in collaboration with Google. Cr Briffa, an intersex human rights activist, has long campaigned against irreversible surgeries performed in infancy that may assign a child to the wrong sex. “As the first publicly elected intersex person anywhere in the world, I know I have helped raise awareness of intersex people and educated many people about what intersex is,” Cr Briffa said in the Deloitte report. “We need to raise awareness about what intersex is – and there is nothing untoward about it, it’s a natural variation. “The fact intersex children continue to have their human rights denied in hospitals around Australia must stop.” Ms Rice, who is the Greens’ LGBTI spokesperson, said her whole life as a community campaigner and as a politician had been about achieving change. “With regard to ending discrimination against LGBTI people, I’m proud to have been one of the leaders in the Parliament that resulted in Australia achieving equal marriage last year, and in raising the profile and the needs for equality for trans and gender diverse and intersex people in particular,” she said.

Mr Turner, who is also a football coach and youth worker, has been a YRIPP volunteer for 18 months, supporting young people while they are being interviewed by police and at bail hearings. Nikolina’s inspiring fight By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown’s Nikolina Mabic has been recognised in the Victorian Young Achiever Awards for her work supporting people with mental health issues. Ms Mabic, 23, first saw a psychologist at age seven, before she knew the meaning of anxiety or panic disorder. “I entered into a system I felt didn’t provide me the right knowledge or assistance in aiding me in my struggle,” she said. “It caused me to have a great passion and will to become an advocate for young people on mental health and an innovator in its prevention and treatment methods.” The Footscray City Films graduate said her own journey and frustration with treatment inspired her to produce a documentary series titled The First Giant Hurdle. “I interviewed people from all walks of life on their journeys with mental illness, including a former NRL player and a Miss Universe contestant suffering from mental ill-health, who were achieving despite their mental illnesses.” Ms Mabic has overcome many barriers to get to where she is. Asked to leave school in year 11 due to low attendance because of hospital treatment, she moved schools and became one of its highest achievers. As a teenager, she was housebound for nearly nine months due to panic disorder. “Once on a flight to Sydney, I held my feet suspended above the floor because I believed if I let them down the plane would drop from the sky,” Ms Mabic said. “Even though the fear was so great, I decided to apply for the Foundation for Young Australians’ Young Social Pioneers program in 2016, knowing very well that if I was

accepted I would have to be flown to Sydney to participate.” She was accepted and in the span of three months in 2016 was able to fly four times. “My mental health journey is still ongoing – I am still unable to catch public transport and I struggle to drive myself some days,” Ms Mabic said.

On Friday, she won the prestigious Saward Dawson Community Service and Social Impact Award. Ms Mabic has been appointed to the north-west advisory board of youth mental health service Orygen. She was named Hobsons Bay Young Citizen of the Year in 2017.

VU divulges diversity plan One of Australia’s most diverse universities has used the World Day for Cultural Diversity (May 21) to launch its own cultural diversity strategy. The new strategy at Victoria University will be the basis for opening up more education pathways for students and refugees from non-English-speakingbackgrounds, as well as building “multiple perspectives and practices” into courses and assessments. More work will be done to connect international students to their studies, build bridges with community organisations and get involved with a wider range of community events. Staff and students will also have greater access to intercultural training and mentoring. Victoria University cultural diversity manager Dr Teresa De Fazio said VU’s diversity is one of its great strengths. “Our students will have a competitive edge in the workplace, since employers highly value graduates who can navigate challenges and opportunities from a range of cultural viewpoints and learn to critically view their own perspectives,” she said. International community development graduate Sophia Van den Ham said the diversity of VU’s students was the reason she chose the university. “Getting insights of students from around the world was extremely valuable, academically and personally” she said. MY PLACE On a rare break from the stage, TV and the big screen, West Footscray actor Greg Caine likes to wander by the Maribyrnong River or dig into one of Melbourne’s best curries. He speaks with Benjamin Millar connection

I moved here as I wanted to be closer to Melbourne for acting work and I absolutely love it! It’s such a vibrant community. People have been so friendly and welcoming and there is so much going on in and around Footscray, it’s brilliant. What do you love most about the area? It’s so close to the city it makes travelling in for jobs and auditions a breeze. The banks of the Maribyrnong River are spectacular and are my favourite place to spend time walking or cycling. There are so many great cafes and restaurants, but as I grew up in England before moving out to Australia 29 years ago I can’t go past a good Indian curry and the best Indian restaurants in Melbourne are right here in West Footscray. How did you become involved in acting? I was living in Sydney and attended NIDA and within five minutes of a class with the great performance coach Carlton Lamb I was hooked. I love the feeling of empathy and interconnection with my fellow actors, it’s being part of something where everyone is pulling together with a common goal. The energy created by that common focus is just amazing – there is nothing quite like it. Eighteen years later I still get the same buzz, whether it’s working on a TV series like Utopia, or a feature film like Marriage or a play like Dead Air Air.

What can you tell us about Marriage? I was privileged to work on this UK feature film directed by the incomparable Katerina Philippou-Curtis. The film is the story of crumbling marriage, but the hidden theme is Europe’s current crumbling social, political and financial system. I play the role of Larry, a powerful, corrupt and unscrupulous Wall Street banker. The film is beautifully shot and has had amazing film festival success, picking up 41 international awards … and counting! What drew you to your next play Dead Air? I am a member of Bitten By Productions and we specialise in original, thought-provoking, character-driven content. Dead Air was written by brilliant young playwright Tom Reed and once we discovered the Bluestone Church Arts Space in Footscray, we knew we had the perfect space. It’s a roller coaster ride where science collides with faith. Following Dead Air, I am making my directorial debut for Melbourne Fringe with We Can Work It Out, reimagining a day in the life of the Beatles. What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you? My father is a great carpenter and I guess a bit of his amazing skill must have rubbed off, I love nothing better that losing a few hours in my man cave creating furniture or wood carving.

Magic loses its shine after loss at home Altona Magic’s time at the top of the National Premier League 2 west soccer ladder is over. The Magic spent five weeks in first place but ceded it to Moreland Zebras at the weekend. It is the first time in their promotion season that Altona has shown signs of the wobbles. The Magic has lost two of its past three games, including Saturday evening’s 2-1 loss to St Albans Saints. Most disappointing for the Goran Lozanovski-coached Magic is that both losses have come on home soil at Paisley Park. Altona was on the back foot at half-time, trailing 1-0 after Luis Covarrubias put St Albans in front. The Magic hit back through Jon McShane seven minutes after the break. But it would all turn pear shaped, as not only did Michael Grgic score the game’s deciding goal for St Albans nine minutes later, but McShane would receive a red card, along with the Saints’ Daniel Slovacek, in the final minutes. It means that McShane, the competition’s second leading goalscorer, will be suspended for Altona’s trip to Goulburn Valley Suns on Saturday night. The Magic fell to second on the ladder, still just one point behind Moreland. In the state leagues, Yarraville Glory had its first win of the men’s state league 1 season. The Glory broke its duck with a 2-1 win over Altona City at McIvor Reserve on Saturday. In men’s state league 2, Altona East Phoenix lost for the second week running, downed 2-1 by Cairnlea at Cairnlea Park. Alex Vlassis scored both of Williamstown’s goals in a 2-2 draw with FC Strathmore in the men’s state league 3. It was a disastrous day for local clubs in the men’s state league 4. Melbourne City was obliterated 10-2 by Surf Coast, while Laverton was thrashed 6-0 by Western Eagles. A local battle took place in men’s state league 5 with Maidstone United victorious 4-1 over Maribyrnong Greens. Kristian Kis scored a double for United. In women’s state league 2, it was a weekend to forget for both local outfits. Maribyrnong Swifts were gutsy against Lara United, but still lost 1-0, while Maidstone United was hammered 3-0 by Moreland Zebras. ■ The feedback on the future of representative football was interesting following last week’s column, and to a degree the result of the games against Ovens and Murray. The under-19s had a good win but the seniors were outclassed by 76 points. Josh Mould from Wyndham Vale won the medal in the under-19 side. I think senior interleague is done, a view supported by many. Maybe it should continue as an under-21 or 23 competition, but it seems time to make that change. Whatever money is being spent in this program would be better used on up-and-coming players. There was also the issue of some clubs not being 100 per cent behind the game. Clubs invest a lot of money in players to play for their club … end of story. If it is to remain as an open-age game then at the very least it must go to every second year and all suburban competitions have to be involved. ■ Kingsville YMCA is another club from the past that is revisiting its history with a reunion in July. The maroon and whites had a short but eventful time in the FDFL, producing league players in Michael Egan (128 games, 12 goals), Lee Perussich (45 games, 12 goals) and Glen Sampson (6 Games, one goal). In 1981 they merged with Brooklyn to form Wembley Park. Brendan Curry was a driving force behind Wembley Park before embarking on a very successful stint with the Williamstown Football Club. This is a bonus for racing fans with free admittance and a bonus meeting for members. ■ Last Friday night in Adelaide was horrific as a spectacle, and seven days later the Bulldogs will be under the roof at Etihad Stadium in totally pristine conditions. Different eras provide different challenges but you have to say the players of old were much better wet weather players. As a spectator I will take games under the roof any day of the week and I am sure so will the players.

Sharon Callus is the talk of the Altona Bowls Club. The late-blooming 62-year-old achieved her dream of competing for Malta at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and returned home with a well-earned bronze medal after finishing third in the fours. Callus, who lives in Altona, has been a popular figure at the Civic Parade club in recent weeks, as members congratulated her on her success. “When I came home, everybody was saying ‘Where’s your medal?’,” Callus said. “They told me after winning it, try not to have everybody touching it because it’s powder-coated and really fragile, so it’s been put in a beautiful box. “I took it down to the club and straight away somebody took it out. “I’m happy for people to hold it, as long as they hold it by the ribbon because it’s pretty special.” Callus, who has Maltese citizenship, teamed up with a Queensland-based mother-daughter trio to make up the team. Mother Rosemaree Rixon (second), Rebecca (lead) and

It was a really awesome experience.” The chance to play in front of big crowds and massive television audiences provided a totally different atmosphere to that Callus is familiar with playing in Altona’s division 1 and Tuesday ladies sides. “If you’ve got the crowd behind you, it’s great,” she said. “You don’t really take too much notice because you’re too focused on playing the game. I don’t get nervous about anything in bowls. It’s not worth it.” There was no prouder person watching in the grandstands than Callus’s husband, Lenny. Lenny is no stranger to international competition, having represented Malta at three Commonwealth Games. He was impressed with the tremendous amount of work Sharon has put into her game to get up to international standard. “She’s been bowling for about eight to 10 years,” Lenny said. “You can’t just go and play these games without training. She’s really worked hard for it.” Callus thanked Altona Bowls Club for its support throughout the journey to the Commonwealth Games.

Cy’s beaten by determined Roy boys Williamstown CYMS got a taste of its own medicine in a 45-point loss to Fitzroy in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C top-of-the-table clash at Brunswick Street Oval on Saturday. The CYs have often been the team going in for the quick kill this season, but on this occasion it was the Roys who delivered the first quarter knock-out as they piled on eight goals to one in the opening stanza. CYs coach Mathew Montebello said his side was never in the hunt after its lacklustre start. “They got hold of us in the first quarter and the margin in that first quarter was the margin in the game,” he said. “They came out and wanted to make a statement. “We were a little bit reactive and by the time we were able to work out what was going on, the main damage had been done.

“We’ve done that to sides this year and they haven’t been able to come back. You can’t give good sides that kind of head start.” Williamstown CYMS was able to salvage some pride by out-scoring the home side six goals to two after half-time. Finn Adamson was one of the few CYs players to have a presence across all four quarters. Adamson put his body on the line in all contests and pulled in a number of contested marks. “He was by far our best on ground,” Montebello said. “In games like that, you sort of see why he’s the captain, because he was pretty much carrying the team on his own back. “He was taking real strong marks, making real strong contests and that’s something we were struggling with up forward.” Nick Blackney put his head over the ball, Ben Deller was strong in defence and youngster Ben

Connolly showed some great signs, but it was to no avail as Williamstown CYMS could not bridge the margin. The CYs tried to find a way back on the scoreboard, but were met with a steely resistance from Fitzroy. “They put eight blokes into our forward line to try and congest it up and make it hard for us to work,” Montebello said. “To the boys’ credit, we could’ve completely rolled over, but they found a bit of something to keep going.” Despite losing for the first time this season and coughing up top spot on the ladder, Williamstown CYMS remain positive. Altona scores little reward Altona was competitive but came away with nothing to show for it after a 3-2 loss to Southern United in the Hockey Victoria women’s premier league at the Altona Hockey Centre on Saturday. The Seagulls, with a single win for the season, took the challenge right up to third-placed United. Goals to Bronte Kerley and Danielle Schubach were not enough for the Seagulls as they coughed up three the other way. At the top end of the ladder, Footscray maintained its flawless start to the year, making it seven straight victories with a 6-0 wipeout of KBH Brumbies at the Footscray Hockey Centre. Olivia Colasurdo was in a mood for goals, finding the back of the net four times for the Bulldogs, while Monica Singh fired in a double. In men’s premier league, Altona had an exciting 5-4 home win over Southern United. Patrick Phillips and Andrew Scanlon scored doubles for the eighth-placed Seagulls. Standout year on track By Lance Jenkinson Luke Plapp has been a revelation on the bike this season. The up-and-coming track and road cycling star from Maribyrnong has surprised even himself with his results this campaign. Plapp went into the year on the back of the best training program of his short career, but he did not envisage that it would lead to the kind of races he would go on to win. The 17-year-old’s first big race win came on the road in the national under-19 individual time trial at Buninyong. He followed it up with first in the scratch race, teams pursuit and madison on the track in the nationals in Brisbane. In March, he took out the under-19 Oceania time trial in Tasmania. Plapp suddenly went from the gutsy also-ran to a feared competitor overnight. “I seriously didn’t expect anything for 2018,” Plapp said. “All throughout my junior career, under-15 and under-17, I never had the results or made the Victorian teams. “I was always the person just missing out..” Once Plapp had a taste of glory, it became an addiction. 54 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 23, 2018

It spurred him on to prepare better and train harder in his pursuit of a breakout season. Suddenly the three hours on the road every day, the one track session, three gym sessions and discipline away from the bike is paying off. “When I got the first result in January, it was a real shock, but I was really pleased that all the hard work and training paid off,” Plapp said. “From that, I just sort of believed and it kept spiralling from there, getting better and better. “This is my last year in juniors and next year you move up into the seniors, so if you get results now, you’re going to get big offers from teams next year in seniors.” Plapp’s rewards will come later in the year. The Maribyrnong College student has been selected to represent Australia in the men’s endurance category at the UCI Junior Track World Championships in Switzerland in August. He will spend time training with pro teams in Spain before jetting to Austria for the Road World Championships, where he will ride for Australia in the under-19 time trial and road race. In all, Plapp will spend almost four months in Europe. The Brunswick Cycling Club member is preparing for the trip with the guidance of

Australian Institute of Sport coaches Shane Kelly and Matthew Gilmore. “It’s going to be such an awesome experience,” Plapp said. “It’s going to be tough, it’s going to be full-time cycling and just training flat out, but I’m really looking forward to it. “I know if it all pays off, it’s going to pay off hugely and could define my career.” Plapp is not going to make up the numbers either. He is particularly focused on winning the time trial in Austria. “My main goal is the road in Austria and that’s what I’m training for,” Plapp said. “In my head, I’m going over there to win it, and that’s my goal.” Plapp’s ultimate dream is to compete for Australia at an Olympic Games and earn a pro tour contract. Plapp is the May nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award. The award, hosted by Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved at state and/or national levels. Plapp will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to help him achieve his sporting goals.

Footscray was in a menacing mood in a 22-3 western derby victory over Altona in the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league at Angliss Reserve on Saturday. The Bulldogs were irresistible from the opening face-off to the final whistle as they piled on the pain for the A’s. The dominant Dogs produced seven opening quarter goals and never looked back. They out-scored the visiting A’s 15-2 after quarter-time. James Lawerson and Kane Mollison were a constant threat in attack with six goals apiece. Chris Plumb, the Australia Sharks captain, and Jordan Germershausen had four assists each. Footscray is sitting third and back in that premiership mix. Altona is struggling in second-last spot with one win in five games. Meanwhile, Williamstown cruised to a 15-3 win over Surrey Park at Fearon Reserve. Sean Clarke was the leading scorer for the Fearons with three goals. In women’s premier division, Footscray ran rampant over Eltham, winning 29-4 at Angliss Reserve.
