For six minutes, Williamstown’s Neale Jolly was clinically dead. “I’ve been to the other side and back, and it’s better on this side of the soil, let me tell you,” he said. Last week, Mr Jolly was reunited with the firefighters who helped save him as part of the Emergency Medical Response program between Ambulance Victoria and the MFB, now in its 20th year and aimed at improving cardiac arrest survival rates. Mr Jolly, 58, had been cycling with mates one early morning last Easter, when he felt like he was freezing. He had been on the way back from Altona and on the home stretch when he

fell to the back of the pack with which he was riding, eventually pulling over and into a bus shelter. “I didn’t know what was wrong … and I thought, ‘I’d better get out of here’,” he said. “People going past in the morning would have just been thinking I was catching a bus, so what I had to do was lie down in the middle of the road to get someone’s attention. “You wouldn’t believe how many cars didn’t stop, but finally someone did and I got a ride back to Williamstown.” Back home, Mr Jolly had a shower but was still freezing cold. He called his daughter, who called an ambulance. Paramedics and firefighters arrived and requested he go to hospital for tests.

“I said, ‘Oh, come on guys, I’ve got to be at work in an hour’,” Mr Jolly said. “They said, ‘Oh no, you’re pretty bad – can you walk to the ambulance?’ Next thing you know, I’m holding his arm … I’ve got my head on his shoulder.” Almost at the ambulance, Mr Jolly collapsed and was “gone” for six minutes. Last week, Mr Jolly was happy to meet up with the MFB firefighters who helped paramedics bring him back, including then Newport senior

station officer Mick Campbell, now at Footscray. Mr Campbell said Mr Jolly’s episode was called a “witnessed cardiac arrest”. “I jumped on his chest, started doing the compressions,” Mr Campbell said. “If there was ever a moment where you could have all the things going for you, that was it, because he had a witnessed arrest by a paramedic with fire response right there within two minutes. “I remember looking up, seeing his daughter watching us, the firies and the paramedics, and then I was looking down at Neale [thinking], ‘That could me, that could be my daughter’. This is close to home.” Mr Jolly was back at work after two weeks, cycling after three and playing competition tennis four weeks later.

Don site plans get council tick By Goya Dmytryshchak A planning panel report for a new suburb in Altona North was last week endorsed by a Hobsons Bay council majority. The former Don Smallgoods site, known as Precinct 15, is to be developed by a number of landowners into 3000 dwellings for about 7000 people. The 67-hectare site, fronting Blackshaws Road and bounded by Kyle Road, New Street and the West Gate Freeway, is about half the size of Melbourne’s CBD and one of the largest

brownfield development sites in metropolitan Melbourne. The majority of councillors supported the government’s recommendation of a preferred maximum height of six storeys in the centre and mandatory maximum height of three storeys on the interface with New Street and Kyle Road. Cr Sandra Wilson said she acknowledged “the angst of the community”, but did not want to relinquish control to another planning authority and would continue to work to mitigate the development’s impacts.

“I think it’s scary, I think it’s intimidating in lots of ways in terms of the scope and the impact on what is a rapidly changing environment in which we live,” she said. “But I also accept my responsibility as a councillor. “I don’t want to abrogate my responsibility as a responsible authority and a planning responsibility to another body.” Cr Tony Briffa voted against the development. “This is an enormous development – it is half the size of Melbourne’s CBD without the infrastructure of half the size of Melbourne’s CBD,” Cr Briffa said.

Teens challenged to see the unseen Scienceworks “experience developer” David Perkins is talking about how a group of kids, testing the new exhibits, almost immediately managed to break one. “That wasn’t me!” protests Tanya, 15, as she scoops up a handful of ghostly mist from a table. It runs through her fingers and vanishes in the darkness. She points at a huge screen where Finley, also 15, is tweaking a fluid-dynamics simulator. “That’s the one I broke,” Tanya says. “I created a supernova. The whole thing just went white.” Breaking things is exactly what the team behind Scienceworks’ major new exhibition for teens, Beyond Perception: Seeing the Unseen, wants to happen. Many of the exhibits – which focus on gravitational waves, invisible light, sound, aerodynamics and the electromagnetic spectrum – don’t have built-in ways to play. It’s up to the teens to create their own as they experiment with fundamental forces of nature. “Scienceworks used to be really ‘press a button, see a thing, learn a fact’,” Mr Perkins says. “But teens are much smarter than that.” There are large flexible touch-screens that you can grab and pull at, warping the fabric of space itself. The Sound Couch is fitted with “butt-kickers” that will pulse sound vibrations through your body while visualising it on a nearby screen. “There is a feeling when you get to high school that you’ve got it all figured out,” Mr Perkins says. “We wanted to show them the world is much bigger than they realised. “It’s about changing the pace of Scienceworks a bit. It’s [usually] very much hammer a button – go, go, go. But when you trust the teenagers a bit, they stop and try and figure it out, they spend a bit of time with it. That’s the moment they want – ‘ this is complex and I like it’.” The exhibit took two years to design, and cost $3.7 million. Girl assaulted at home A 12-year-old girl has been assaulted by an intruder during a home invasion in Footscray. Police believe a man entered the house on Mary Street sometime after 9pm on Monday night. A police spokeswoman said the man, perceived to be of African appearance, was disturbed by the child. “The 12-year-old girl was assaulted before the man fled on a scooter, believed to have been stolen from the home,” she said. Detectives are investigating the aggravated burglary and no arrests have been made. The girl was not injured. A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said he got home from work on Monday night and saw the father of the girl getting out of the car to go inside. “He said someone broke into the house and took [his daughter’s] phone … he was really freaked out when he came home,” he said. The incident comes as Victoria Police on Monday spoke of the success of Taskforce Wayward, a pilot program in the city’s west targeting youth offenders. A Victoria Police spokesman said the taskforce monitors 64 young people linked to home invasions or aggravated burglaries, tracking them at home and school to keep them out of trouble. Not all of those monitored by police are on the street, with some currently in jail, and the number of youths monitored fluctuates. The pilot program operates in Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham, Brimbank and Melton. Police said there hadn’t been a home invasion in these areas since March. Simone Fox Koob / The Age

Time’s right for soccer club revamp

By Goya Dmytryshchak It’s meant to be a peaceful pad for cats, but work on a new jet fuel pipeline is threatening to put a Spotswood feline retreat out of business. Cat Napping Suburban Oasis at Spotswood has been disrupted by the closure of Burleigh Street due to Mobil works. Owner Ebony Centazzo said the street had been closed at both ends since January. “As our address is Burleigh Street, this is upsetting customers and stressing them and their cats out,” she said. “They are driving around in circles trying to work out how to get in. “I don’t think the business will last much longer, being so new to the area and people not being able to access it. “It’s not fair for a large international company to do this to a small business.” Mobil spokesman Travis Parnaby said a 3.1-kilometre pipeline was being laid to connect the Yarraville terminal to the Somerton pipeline. “This crucial piece of new infrastructure will enable the reliable supply of jet fuel to Melbourne Airport from Yarraville terminal,” he said. “We have carefully planned this work to minimise any impacts on our neighbours. Businesses in this area can still be accessed from an entrance at Hall Street. “We apologise for any inconvenience this work may have caused our neighbours and thank the community for their support.” The work is expected to be completed by the end of May, weather permitting.

A petition signed by 395 people is calling on Hobsons Bay council to redevelop the Altona City Soccer Club’s clubrooms and pavilion at Kim Reserve. Club president Joe Tanti said the facilities had not been upgraded since he was a boy. “There’s been a concept plan done, probably about seven years ago, and we’ve just been waiting on that to happen and it hasn’t really moved,” he said. “The club just hasn’t really been touched in at least 20 years. “There was a little bit of development done when I was just a young boy, which was pretty much a basic renovation – and since then it hasn’t really been touched. “We’ve got female teams now – we really need female-friendly clubrooms.” Mr Tanti said the club had more than 300 junior players, as well as seniors. “Plus, their parents are all members as well, so if you take that into account you’ve got at least 1500 members,” he said. “We’ve got the under-14 girls and we’ve got the senior women’s now, and we’ve also got an under-six girls team happening, which is really good. “We’re really trying to push the female involvement and for us it’s important for us to be compliant for females to play, for women to feel comfortable and want to be part of the club.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Rumbles over truck ban policing By Benjamin Millar Hundreds of truck drivers have been caught flouting bans during school drop-off and pick-up times in Yarraville, but angry parents argue they are just the tip of the iceberg. The truck curfew was introduced on Somerville Road with great fanfare in 2014, yet parents say lack of enforcement means trucks have continued to rumble along the route in flagrant abuse of the restrictions. Kingsville Primary School council president Glen Yates said a patrol by VicRoads transport

safety services officers (TSSOs) last Friday was the first time he had seen a patrol this year, despite months of begging VicRoads to step up enforcement. “A lot of parents were really happy to see the TSSOs there – they literally were like rock stars because they’ve not been there for so long,” he said. “But that needs to keep happening – one show of force is not enough.” Mr Yates said the greatest concern for parents was safety as children made their way to and from the three primary schools along or near Somerville Road.

Star Weekly last week witnessed a number of trucks flouting the bans during the morning school-crossing period as they passed flashing “no truck” signs. The on-the-spot fine for disobeying a “no trucks” sign is $152. Mr Yates has taken hundreds of photos of trucks breaching the bans, forwarding them to VicRoads. But he’s unsure whether VicRoads follows them up and argues it shouldn’t be up to parents to police the zones. “It’s not my job and it’s not the responsibility of other parents, either,” he said.

“The amount of time I’ve been abused by truck drivers while taking photos, I’ve lost count.” VicRoads heavy vehicle services director Eric Henderson said transport safety services officers had spent 458 hours patrolling curfews since 2016, issuing 566 penalty notices. “Truck curfews are monitored and enforced regularly,” he said. “VicRoads works closely with the freight industry and local businesses to educate and inform them of the curfews and alternative routes.”

New chapter for bridge The death of 35 workers in the collapse of the West Gate Bridge almost 50 years ago forms the backdrop to a new novel set in Melbourne’s western suburbs. The Bridge, the second novel by Victoria University creative writing honorary professor Enza Gandolfo, draws on events of October 15, 1970, when a span of the half-built bridge collapsed into the river below, killing 35 workers – still Australia’s worst industrial accident. Gandolfo said the story weaves together two tales about grief and guilt, set almost 40 years apart. While the bridge collapse strand of the story has been on her mind for years, it only came to life after she discussed the tragedy with a former worker she met by chance. “He was talking about having worked on the West Gate Bridge, he knew a lot of the guys on it when it came down,” she said. “It was difficult for the survivors – he talked

about how they were worried by what had happened, but also felt compelled to finish it.” Gandolfo said research for the novel and her character Antonella, a 22-year-old Italian migrant, involved reading witness statements from the inquiry into the accident. The second strand of the story takes place in 2009, when “a terrible mistake” by character Jo causes the death of her best friend Ashleigh. “Both of these young people have to find a way to deal with grief and guilt,” Gandolfo said. The western suburbs feature prominently in the novel. Writer Alice Pung will launch the book this Friday as part of The Sun Bookshop’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Fight for ‘best friend’ By Alesha Capone Western suburbs resident Danielle describes her dog Lacey as a “life saver”. Yet Danielle regularly confronts resistance to the presence of her official assistance dog and companion. In 2005, Danielle survived a hit-and-run after another motorist ran into her vehicle on Punt Road. The driver of the other car, which was stolen and unregistered, was never found by police. As a result of the accident, Danielle has been dealing with spinal injuries and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type 1 (CRPS), a degenerative neurological condition that can cause severe pain throughout the body. Since 2014, she has also been diagnosed with lupus, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and complex post traumatic stress disorder. Danielle says many people do not believe that Lacey, a 12-year-old zuchon, is her official assistance dog. Although she has letters from her doctor stating Lacey is an assistance animal who can accompany Danielle anywhere under the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act (except for planes, without certification), she has found that some people are openly hostile. Danielle recently received a settlement through the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission after a shopping centre store would not let her take Lacey inside. Danielle said that a week later a staff member and customer at a Werribee cafe confronted her about Lacey and “her legitimacy in being with me”. “I have come to realise, through conversations with other individuals diagnosed with CRPS

and similar conditions, that the public scrutiny and judgment I have received is not an isolated incident,” Danielle said. She said that she and two friends were establishing the CRPS Foundation Australia to help raise awareness and education of their

condition and help people suffering from it. “There needs to be a spotlight on harm reduction and positive communication from the wider public and awareness about the ripple effect their words and actions can have,” she said.

Arsonist denied appeal An arsonist who caused more than 431,000 square metres of grassland in Melbourne’s north and west to go up in flames, has been denied permission to appeal his prison sentence. Mark Ganon, 41, faced the Supreme Court earlier this month requesting the right to appeal. The court heard that between January 4 to 14 last year, Ganon started between 20 to 30 fires in Mount Ridley, Donnybrook, Keilor North, Calder Park, Sunshine West, Cairnlea and Keilor Downs. Gannon was arrested on January 16. He faced the County Court last year, where he pleaded guilty to six charges of intentionally causing a bushfire, possessing a drug of dependence, handling stolen goods, committing an indictable offence while on bail, resisting an emergency worker, unlicensed driving and using an unregistered motor vehicle. In September last year, he was sentenced to five years in prison, with a non-parole period of three years and four months. TAFE upskills for tunnel crews By Benjamin Millar Victoria University’s TAFE arm will reopen its Werribee East campus as a ‘Technology Precinct’ to train hundreds of workers to work on the West Gate Tunnel. A new partnership with tunnel constructor CPB-John Holland, announced on Tuesday, will see VU Polytechnic offer civil construction Certificate II, III and IV courses for trainees and apprentices working on the tollway project. Under the Victorian Major Project Skills

Guarantee, at least 500 of the 6000 jobs on the project will go to apprentices, trainees and recent graduates. Premier Daniel Andrews said construction began earlier this year. “There are already 1200 people working on the West Gate Tunnel – this partnership will make sure that young Victorians get the skills they need to help deliver this massive project,” he said. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said this will be the first time in four years VU

Polytechnic will be teaching a new course in civil construction. “This is an amazing opportunity for our apprentices and trainees to get practical training and experience that will provide a stepping stone for future employment.” Certificate III in civil construction will be a free course under the state government’s promise to make 30 priority courses free from next year. The government will spend $172 million making 30 priority TAFE courses and 18

pre-apprenticeship courses free from 2019. Australian Education Union Victorian president Meredith Peace said this month’s state budget makes significant steps toward rebuilding the TAFE system. “New free TAFE courses will provide great opportunities for young people,” she said. “The benefits of free, quality TAFE education will extend to the whole Victorian community.” Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has also announced a Labor government would waive up-front fees for 100,000 TAFE students.

Jazz festival heads west Expect the unexpected when the Melbourne International Jazz Festival (June 1-10) brings some of the best local talent to the west. DJ, radio presenter and event curator MzRizk has hopped aboard as the Jazz Out West guest programmer, promising an eclectic range of free events across Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley. MzRizk, who grew up in the west, said her line-up was inspired by Miles Davis’ suggestion that he didn’t like the word jazz. “He considered it social music. Jazz is a lot broader than people perceive it to be, it comes from a very long history of blackness and politics,” she said. “The artists I chose bring a lot of soul and passion to their work.” New Flower Garden guitarist Kyran said while the acts may not instantly be recognisable to people thinking of traditional notions of jazz, they draw on the form in different ways. “I think there are common threads, we all cross into each other’s worlds.”

N’Fa Jones of Afro-funk outfit Cool Out Sun said it was great to be bringing gigs to the west as part of such a well-recognised festival. “There’s a lot of talent from out this way,” he said. “We often perform in the north or central, it’s nice to be able to bring some music out here.” Singer-songwriter Thando said the festival’s free events open music up to audiences who might otherwise not be able to access the arts. “I hope it encourages a lot more patrons of colour to come out and enjoy the live music scene that is here.” The 10-day festival will offer 100 events with more than 400 Australian, international and emerging artists in 26 venues across Melbourne. On track for retraining A tailored retraining program has sparked a brighter future for about 200 former Toyota workers. Thousands of workers lost their jobs last year when Toyota closed its factory doors in Altona after 54 years and almost 3.5 million cars. The automotive industry was already in a tailspin following the decision by Ford and Holden to cease manufacturing in Australia. While some workers retired or entered new fields, others have been working to put their experience to use. VU Polytechnic’s Skills and Job Centre has been working with employers and agencies such as Adecco Australia to develop “short and sharp” training programs to upskill the workers and help them find new jobs.

Victoria Polytechnic vocational education VP Grant Dreher said the Sunshine-based centre has so far helped about 200 former Toyota workers retrain via a five-day course. “I think it can be easier to make these kinds of matches in what you might call the hard industries, with these workers who have engineering-type skills,” he said. “They have a need for some level of training but are not starting from scratch.” Mr Dreher said the automotive industry contraction has had a significant impact on jobs in the west, but there were many opportunities available in smaller-scale manufacturing. Pay error has school in hot water By Alesha Capone A swimming school franchise business that operates across Melbourne, including in the western suburbs, has apologised for underpaying 1308 staff. Paul Sadler Swimland Pty Ltd has issued a public notice saying it has agreed to be supervised by the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) for two years.

The notice says the swimming school franchisees had contravened the Fair Work Act from July, 2010, to March, 2016. They included those in Bacchus Marsh, Braybrook, Essendon, Hoppers Crossing and Melton, and USAust Management Services Pty Ltd, trading as Paul Sadler Swimland Taylors Lakes Pty Ltd. The schools failed to pay the minimum wages to adult and junior employees and minimum

rates set out in enterprise agreements. The workers were underpaid a combined total of more than $1.42 million. As a result, the franchisees have committed to an enforceable agreement with the FWO, which will include a future audit to ensure they are complying with all federal workplace laws. Paul Sadler Swimland Pty Ltd will donate $25,000 to the Smith Family and $25,000 to Western Chances.

In a statement, the company said that in late 2015, it was made aware of an error with staff payments. The business conducted an audit of its manual payroll systems and confirmed that a number of employees had been “unintentionally underpaid”. The statement said that the company had worked throughout 2016 to ensure employees were repaid any money owed to them and had also written to all former employees who were owed money.

Williamstown’s Nathan Pellissier is determined to represent Australia at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. It has been a long road back for Pellissier, who had two years out with injury after the 2014 World Championships in China. Pellissier, who has cerebral palsy, underwent a full hip reconstruction followed by bone grafting before he returned to competition. He won three major international titles last year, including the Oceania Regional Championships in Fiji, Taiwan Para Open and Korean Para Open. The 22-year-old, who is raising money to fund his campaign, discovered his talent early. “At the age of 12, I went to a Paralympic talent search day in Altona and got put on the table tennis table,” he said. “They thought I had good hand-eye co-ordination, so it just went from there. “Six months later, I played my first national championships and I won that and got identified by the Australia team, so just kept on training and travelling to different

In line to fight poverty Williamstown High School’s Nhien Le, an international student from Vietnam, is living on $2 a day for five days as part of Oaktree’s annual Live Below the Line campaign. Oaktree’s state director Nathan Linton said the campaign has raised more than $10 million towards building schools and providing education for students in South East Asia. “Live Below the Line is our biggest fundraising campaign and gives young people the chance to take action against extreme poverty,” he said. “It has raised more than $10.8 million since 2010, which has been instrumental in developing education projects in Cambodia, Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste.”

Nhien, who arrived in Australia in February, said she wanted to help give others more opportunities. “We are raising the money for Cambodian children,” she said. “I am from a country that is the same as Cambodia. MY PLACE West Footscray’s Louise Taylor, Country Women’s Association Footscray branch secretary, is hoping to re-establish a Williamstown branch. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to the city of Maribyrnong?

Wimmera. Today, we advocate local, state and national government on social issues such as healthcare, elder abuse, housing affordability and sustainability. We are a friendship group that does good work in the local community and gives women opportunities to learn new skills, make friends and have fun in a safe and welcoming environment. I am also a founding member of the CWA Footscray branch which was formed in 2015, and am currently the branch secretary.

I have lived in West Footscray with my family since 1993. The boys went to school in Kingsville and Altona North. I have worked in Footscray at the Docklands Cotton Mills for 10 years. My husband, myself and one of our sons have all studied at Victoria University. What do you like about West Footscray?

Can you tell me about plans to re-establish a CWA branch in Williamstown (and what happened to the branch)?

I like the streetscapes, the trees, the sounds of birds chirping and the variety of dogs that are walked past our house each day. West Footscray is full of interesting people – a blend of all ages and ethnicities. I enjoy the proximity to the city, the interesting local shops and the great services available, like the excellent libraries and the Sun Theatre, which is only a short drive away.

I would change the amount of apartments that are being built. The ever-increasing traffic is a great concern and Geelong Road is becoming extremely congested. It is difficult to drive to Footscray in the morning when the peak hour has Geelong Road clogged.

I am the group president of the Mitchell Group, which consists of nine branches that stretch from Sanctuary Lakes to Alphington. The CWA is the largest women’s organisation in Victoria. We were established in 1928 in an effort to improve living conditions for women and children living in the Mallee and

We would like to open a new branch in Williamstown. There are around 340 branches spread throughout the state with an increasing number in urban areas. We have about 5800 members in total. Williamstown had a branch in the past, but it most likely closed because of decreasing membership when the ladies aged. Both Footscray and Altona have thriving branches, so it is time to bring the CWA back to Williamstown. We are hoping to garner enough interest at our information session on May 31 to form a branch. All it takes is at least six interested women to decide to join our association. The CWA state conference will be held at Williamstown Town Hall from May 31-June 2. An information session to re-establish a Williamstown branch will be held at Williamstown library on Thursday, May 31, from 7-8pm.

You could not fault the commitment of players who turned out for the Roosters against Sunbury, but there was a clear lack

of connectivity between the players. “We had about five new players, so the communication and the combinations weren’t there,” Riki said. “We didn’t have our halves there – our six and seven – we had to put guys out of position in there. “Our last play efforts were pretty ordinary and it just lacked direction. “It’s still about getting to know one another.” A major positive was the performance of new centre Josh Kaa. Kaa kept looking for holes in the Tigers’ defence and got rewarded with two tries. Another new recruit, Joseph Smith, was one of the Roosters most influential forwards. Magic cup run for Altona By Lance Jenkinson Altona Magic is through to the last eight of the Victorian leg of the FFA Cup. The Magic is one win away from the national round-of-32, where they could be pitted against A-League or interstate opposition. Firstly, the Magic, league leaders in NPL 2 west, have to clear a significant hurdle in top tier NPL club Northcote City in the next round to be played at Paisley Park later this month. The Magic got a ball in the pot of Monday’s draw after beating Whittlesea Ranges 1-0 at Epping Stadium last Tuesday night. Magic coach Goran Lozanovski said there was a buzz of excitement at Paisley Park with all the success the newly promoted first team is having this season. “Everyone is very happy about us having a good cup run,” he said. “In saying that, it’s more important that we’re doing well in the league season, but the cup run is an added bonus.” Altona’s victory over Whittlesea Ranges came courtesy of a nifty free kick from Marino Gasparis. Gasparis shaped up like he was going to kick the ball over the wall, only to readjust on the fly and kick to the keeper’s side. The Ranges goalkeeper was wrong footed and could not stop the ball from bulging the back of the net. “It was a cheeky finish,” Lozanovski said. Altona was the better side on the night and deserved its victory. The Magic hit the post on two occasions and forced the Ranges custodian into a number of good saves. “We were quite dominant and comfortable for the majority of the game,” Lozanovski said. The stakes have gone up for Altona now. The chance to draw the biggest clubs in the land is a mouth-watering prospect. “Making the last four [out of the Victorian clubs], you might draw an A-League club or you might draw an interstate team,” Lozanovski said. “It’s the furthest the club has got and we’re looking forward to going one more step.” In the league action on Saturday, Altona Magic maintained its spot at the top of the ladder with a 3-1 win over Langwarrin. Jon McShane opened the scoring for the Magic with a tap in just before half-time. McShane then turned provider for Ben Litfin to double the Magic’s lead in the 65th minute. Langwarrin halved the deficit through Liam Baxter from the penalty spot, but the Magic put the game beyond doubt with a Melvin Becket goal on the break. The Magic will host third-placed St Albans Saints in a tantalising duel at Paisley Park on Saturday night.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Success in sport, like every other pursuit in life, requires more than just raw talent. Everyone knows someone who had the talent to make it to the top level, but didn’t get there. Doug Hawkins talks about a few of his Braybrook junior teammates who fell by the wayside while Doug carved out a legendary career in the red, white and blue. Last week, Hugh Litchfield passed away and with him went a story of a sportsman who is always a subject of those conversations. Universally known as “Butch”, he was a very handy cricketer and became a VFA cult hero with the Sunshine Football Club. In 1985, when the Bulldogs were heading to a possible grand final spot, Butch was playing in the VFA second division at Skinner Reserve and carving out a reputation. His 110 goals that season were followed by 134 goals in 1986. The pinnacle was a 20-goal haul against Mordialloc. Butch was a star, a big fish in a little pond. Why didn’t he make it to the big time? There is no correct answer – it just happened. He played some reserves games with Footscray, but it was not meant to be. In recent years, Butch was seen following his son, Jackson, in the WRFL. Fair to say, Butch was a shadow of the man who imposed himself in the goalsquare for Sunshine 30 years ago. He had his demons, but will always be remembered for his larger than life exploits on the field. RIP Butch. Condolences to his family. ■ The WRFL interleague sides head to Yarrawonga this weekend to take on the very powerful Ovens and Murray league. The under-19s, under coach Matt Dean, have had great games and success in recent years, but will be tested by the country boys on their own deck. The seniors, under Brodie Holland, have a huge mountain to climb against a very powerful opponent, with most scribes giving them no chance. The EDFL’s withdrawal from the competition has meant a fixture redraw that has not helped the WRFL. This weekend might decide the fate of future interleague programs. I think the resources would be best used to continue the under-age rep teams and give the senior version a big miss. The under-age competition is still based on geographic location, whereas the senior competition is based on economics. It does not mean as much to most blokes in senior footy, so let them concentrate on club footy, and spend the money where it is appreciated and makes a difference.

Altona Roosters are still searching for form and fitness in NRL Victoria first grade. The Roosters had to make five enforced changes from the team that won the previous week for Saturday’s 34-16 loss to Sunbury Tigers at Langama Park. Roosters’ coach Damien Riki just cannot find a settled line-up from week to week. “We’re trying to get the right combination of players, but we’re getting new players week in week out,” he said. “We’re just trying to get the right combinations together to settle ourselves into the season. “Hopefully in the next couple of weeks we’ll settle our team and we can start turning things around.” It has not been the start that Altona wanted this season. Youth policy pays off for coach By Lance Jenkinson When Anthony Eames arrived as coach of Spotswood, he was entrusted to foster the club’s next generation of home-grown stars. You need time and patience in a development phase, but it helps if you can get some victories along the way to reaffirm that you have taken the right path. A shock win over Deer Park back in round three and Saturday’s six-point victory over Sunshine Kangaroos are indications that Spotswood is on the right track in the Western Region Football League division 1. The Woodsmen took 15 players under the age of 21 into the heat of battle against a physically intimidating Sunshine at Kinder Smith Reserve on Saturday and came away with a win. It was a significant result in the evolution of this side – one that showed they are starting to get up to the physical demands required. “Body size, we were under the pump,” Eames said. “Sunshine is a very strongly built side and they hit the ball well, so to get a result,

particularly after quarter-time when we were four or five goals down, it says a fair bit for our young guys. “We still need to have another good pre-season or two in these kids to build them up. If we can do that, the club’s going to be in a pretty good position next few years.” Spotswood was off colour in the first quarter and that was reflected on the scoreboard as it trailed by 27 points at quarter-time. Sure, the Woodsmen were kicking into a stiff breeze, but there was something just not right about them in the opening 30 minutes. It was the willingness of the Spotswood players to take stock and own the situation that impressed Eames. The Woodsmen chipped away in the second quarter and got it to a manageable five-point deficit by half-time. The Kangaroos got their lead out to 17 by three quarter-time, but the Woodsmen were always going to be a good show in the last quarter with the assistance of the wind. Spotswood not only won the last quarter comfortably, they kept the hosts scoreless.

“We were under pressure at quarter-time,” Eames said. “For the boys to respond the way they did the next three quarters was pleasing.” Murray Boyd is the perfect leader for Spotswood. A hard worker at training and a lead by example type on the field, the ruckman is a great role model for the youngsters on the team.

Western Jets back in winners’ circle Western Jets ticked all the boxes in their best four-quarter performance of the TAC Cup season. The Jets briefly moved into the top four on Saturday night after their commanding 24-point win over Geelong Falcons at the Williamstown Cricket Ground, before settling into fifth spot by the end of the round. Jets’ coach Torin Baker was thrilled with his side’s showing after some patchy recent form. “The Falcons had a pretty strong team in, so I’m just proud with the way the boys played to be honest,” he said. “It was a really windy day, which is typical down at Williamstown, the conditions were really hard to play in, but I thought we handled them really well. “Everything we planned for tended to come to fruition. “The boys didn’t overuse the footy, they got it back in their forward half, they were really good around the ball and their pressure to maintain the footy in the forward half was excellent.” Stefan Radovanovic was again at the forefront of the win. Not even a finger injury could slow Radovanovic down as he compiled another stellar showing in the Jets’ midfield. “He actually had to come off the field in the second quarter with a finger injury that needed some treatment and got some protection on it to play the rest of the half,” Baker said. “His second half was just as good a footy as you could hope from him. “He’s had a very good start to the year and a very good TAC Cup career to date.” Zak Butters and Xavier O’Halloran kept up their usual high standards with some fine work in the midfield. Daly Andrews, a smooth moving wing/ half-back with polished delivery, shone once again. Darcy Cassar’s three goals were huge in tough scoring conditions on a day when the Jets only managed nine goals to the Falcons’ seven, despite having 14 more scoring shots. Cassar is beginning to cement his place in the team. “Last week he had a bit of a ‘nearly’ game, won plenty of the footy and didn’t quite execute on the day, but he’s working hard at his footy and it was pleasing to see him finish off his good work this week,” Baker said. “He played four games last year as a 16 year old, so he’s been a talented boy that we’ve known about for a fair while.” Western Jets will feature in a blockbuster against third-placed Oakleigh Chargers at Warrawee Park on Sunday morning. Altona played out a 2-2 draw with Geelong. In men’s premier league, Footscray edged out Waverley 3-2, while Altona pummelled Brunswick 3-0.
