Council’s fine woe grows A knight in shining armour has come to the aid of two aged pensioners stung by Maribyrnong council’s “inflexible” infringement system, stepping in to pay their parking fines. Star Weekly last week revealed Victoria’s Ombudsman is calling on the council to change its review process. Ombudsman Deborah Glass compared the council with five others, finding its practices were lacking in fairness and discretion. She called for the council to reimburse a handful of complainants who had forgotten to display their valid disabled permits and challenged their fines. The council refused four of five requests, saying the matters were closed, spurring a Star Weekly reader to reach into his own pocket to reimburse the pensioners. A flood of new complaints emerged as residents recounted rejections of their own pleas for consideration. Cheryl Tucker said that when her father suddenly passed away, she took her mother to Highpoint to get clothes for the funeral. “Her disability sticker fell on the floor and I didn’t notice,” she said. “I wrote to the council and explained the situation. They basically said, ‘Bad luck’, it’s my responsibility.” West Footscray resident Mike Disbury said he was incorrectly issued a fine for parking his car facing the wrong way. He called the council seeking photographic evidence and realised the car was, in fact, parking the correct way. “I asked why the guy put the fine there and they said he was new and had already put it in his machine,” Mr Disbury said.

Yarraville resident Rocio Bustinza said she had received a fine in the mail after briefly parking in the opposite direction to traffic in front of her home. “I was leaving the house and needed to grab my seven-month-old baby and place her in her car seat,” she said. “Our driveway blocks access to the left hand side door with a fence.” Her review was unsuccessful so she challenged the fine in court.

“I spent countless hours there on the day of the hearing to have the matter rejected and was fined an extra $100 of admin cost to council,” she said. “I broke down in tears on how the system treated us on this matter.” Elena Margarita was fined while changing her baby’s nappy on a nature strip beside her car. “He could see me changing the baby whilst he wrote it and I actually called out to him before he pressed the button,” she said. Kellie Danskin was fined for parking outside her home despite having a valid permit sticker on her car. “Apparently it wasn’t visible when it clearly was,” she said. “They wouldn’t waive it. I was furious.” Maribyrnong council chief executive Stephen Wall last week said that the Ombudsman’s report “oversimplifies and unfairly represents” council review procedures, but that the council would nevertheless retrain staff and update its internal review guidelines.

Lease limits cops at trash parties By Benjamin Millar Police have conceded they need to change their approach to dealing with out-of-control parties after they were unable to stop a Footscray house being trashed. The owner of the short-term rental house watched on helplessly in the early hours of Sunday morning as party-goers smashed windows and knocked holes through walls. They later hurled furniture, including a television, on to the street. Kelly, who did not want her surname used, has owned the Ryan Street house for about four years and had been renting the house out for short-term stays. She took a booking for

Saturday night through Booking.com for five guests, but as the night went on, more than 100 people arrived. Neighbours first called Kelly at 2am. She raised the alarm with police, but officers warned her against going into the house. She said she was told that because people had rented the house and invited the guests, officers were not able to enter the property. “I stood out there with the police and we all looked in as, basically windows were being smashed, massive holes in the walls, doors knocked through,” Kelly told radio station 3AW. “It felt like I was watching my house burning down. Warning over illegal steel-jaw trap A Newport woman is urging people to report anyone with an illegal steel-jaw trap after her cat’s leg had to be amputated. Angela Tait’s rescue cat Samson returned to their Challis Street home last Wednesday with his right front paw missing and a broken leg. “He disappeared at about 4pm on Friday [April 27],” Ms Tait said. “On Tuesday [May 1], we put up flyers around the neighbourhood just to say that he’s missing and if anyone knows where he is, to contact us. “And then on Wednesday morning, he came home with his paw in the state that it was. “We believe that his paw was caught in a steel-jaw trap because his whole paw, all the meat had gone – it was just the skin hanging there – and as he was trying to get it out, obviously, it broke the bone. “The upper part of the bone of his leg was sticking out and his nails had all gone because he was trying to dig it out. “He’s a really tough cat. He’s a real fighter.” RSPCA acting head of inspectorate Lisa Calleja said there were stiff penalties for steel-jaw traps and associated injury. “It is illegal to use a steel-jaw trap in Victoria and anyone found guilty of setting or using one can face fines up to $38,056 and up to 12 months’ imprisonment under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,” she said. “In a case where an animal’s leg has to be amputated as a result of someone laying a steel-jaw trap, that person could also be charged with aggravated cruelty. “We urge anyone with concerns for the welfare of an animal to make a report at rspcavic.org or on 9224 2222.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Brooklyn stink prompts action A Brooklyn company has been put on notice for creating a stink for nearby residents, who say the stench is so bad they have to rewash their clothes. Australian Tallow Producers has been issued three notices by the Environment Protection Authority requiring it to take measures to reduce odours. The company has been ordered not to receive or store animal byproducts exposed to the elements. It is also required to modify its biofilters and waste receival and storage activities to prevent strong odour emissions. Brooklyn Pollution Action Group spokeswoman Lexi Christou said she had been reporting an offensive odour to the EPA’s pollution hotline every day since April 23. “The smell is a real strong stockyard smell,” she said. “It occurs consistently, often with an accompanying chemical smell. The smell embeds in everything – we had to rewash all the clothes we had hanging outside.” In late 2015, Australian Tallow Producers was fined $200,000 and convicted for polluting the atmosphere in the Brooklyn residential area. A 41-year-old Altona man has been charged with three counts of armed robbery after allegedly robbing a number of stores in Altona and Hoppers Crossing at gunpoint in April. He was also charged with aggravated burglary, false imprisonment, assault-related offences and attempted carjacking following alleged incidents in Yarraville and West Footscray on April 30. He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 13.

All things Samoan The Miss Samoa Victoria pageant is coming to Williamstown. Six finalists are vying for the crown: Karen Sooaemalelagi of Roxburgh Park, Rachael Aulelio-Fili of Craigieburn, Rona Alainuuese of Mernda, Shanasha Tanuvasa Tofaeono of Derrimut, Norah Aloiai of Eummemering and Britanny Aiono of Craigieburn. This year’s theme is ‘Faiva o alofi lima o tama’ita’i’ which translates to ‘The artistries of women’. The pageant highlights contestants’ knowledge of Samoan dance, language, culture, history, traditions, myths and legends. It has also helped raise more than $7000 to date for the pageant’s charity partner, the Leulumoega School of Fine Arts and Museum in Apia, Samoa.

Pageant board member Lemalu Faatau said he hoped the competition would provide a platform for Samoan women. “I pray to see each of you become great ambassadors for our Samoa, our Samoan community and for all future female leaders that are watching and wishing you well on this journey that you are undertaking,” he said. The Miss Samoa Victoria pageant will be held on June 9 at Williamstown Town Hall. By Benjamin Millar A heavyweight boxer has been jailed for 11 years after being found guilty of shooting a man with a shotgun after robbing a Kingsville bottleshop. The Supreme Court heard that on the day after the 2011 AFL grand final, brothers Craig and Wayne Vitale drove their mother’s car to the Do Bottle Shop on Geelong Road and entered with their faces covered, Craig carrying a loaded sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun. He pointed the gun at the shopkeeper and demanded she open the cash register, firing a shot at the register when she failed to act. Wayne left the shop with a slab or two of Jim Beam cans in his bag and another under his arm. Craig pointed the shotgun at the shopkeeper and her son as he left the store, warning them not to do anything stupid. Justice Michael Croucher said while the ordeal lasted only about 40 seconds, the shopkeeper and her son “must have been terrified for every moment”. The court heard that as the brothers drove off, they noticed Noel Kennedy driving behind them, after he had stopped to pick up fish and chips for his family. Wayne stopped the car and Craig walked up to Mr Kennedy’s car, firing through his closed driver’s side window. The bulk of the shot struck Mr Kennedy’s left wrist, some pellets also striking his right shoulder. The injuries have required multiple surgeries

and his physical recovery was described as “slow, arduous, painful and incomplete”. Craig was arrested later that month and interviewed about the armed robbery and the shooting. He denied the offending, saying he was at a birthday party in Endeavour Hills at the time. He said a cousin named James Lua attending the party later that night claimed to have committed an armed robbery and to have shot a man. Despite Craig not having a cousin by that name, he was released without charge. After CCTV footage of the armed robbery was aired in June 2016, almost five years later, police covertly recorded conversations between the Vitale brothers. The court heard that in the recorded conversation, Craig said: “I should have [blown] his head off when I had the chance.” Craig, who is now 29, was arrested and charged with various offences, including armed robbery and attempted murder. Wayne was arrested at Tullamarine Airport and denied involvement until the covert recordings were played to him. He entered a guilty plea in the County Court last April and was sentenced to three-and-a-half years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of 18 months. Craig maintained his innocence, but in August a jury found him guilty of armed robbery and intentionally causing serious injury. He was last month sentenced to 11 years in jail with a seven-year non-parole period.

Water Police at Williamstown have launched a new $3.5 million flagship boat that is the largest vessel in its fleet. The 16.5-metre twin-hull catamaran can carry up to 12 people including the crew. Acting Inspector Mark O’Rourke said the boat, which can reach speeds of up to 37 knots, would be used in everything from safety inspections of vessels off St Kilda to extended coastal patrols and offshore rescues in Bass Strait. He said the new boat could go in shallow water and was highly manoeuvrable. “Due to its shallow draft, range and capability in poor conditions, this new boat will be the most versatile in our fleet,” Acting Inspector O’Rourke said. “The new vessel is equipped with updated technology, including sonar,

forward-looking infrared cameras, and the latest electronic navigation systems to increase our patrol and response capability. “Our members have been busy over the past few weeks testing out the new boat and doing the necessary training to have it ready to respond to jobs.” Each year, Water Police respond to 800-1000 calls for help and inspect more than 8500 vessels, jet skis and kayaks for safety compliance. Police Minister Lisa Neville said seven ageing vessels would be replaced under a $7 million upgrade. “This new catamaran will help police enforce water safety regulations, respond to distress calls and investigate crime on the water,” she said. New housing for Altona strip By Goya Dmytryshchak An architect’s image of a five-storey, 19-dwelling apartment block proposed for Altona’s shopping strip has been revealed. Metropol Planning Solutions has applied to Hobsons Bay council to build a mixed use building with shops on the ground floor at 108 Pier Street. The building has been designed by Collingwood-based ClarkeHopkinsClarke architects.

The present two-storey building was formerly the Keima Press printing business, which moved to Williamstown North after the property was sold last year. Metropol planner Michael Dunn said the proposed five-storey development was aimed at owner-occupiers rather than investors. “To the rear of the shops, it’s got on-grade car parking as opposed to a basement, and then above it’s got apartments,” Mr Dunn said. “They’re generously-sized apartments. Things have moved a lot in Melbourne over the

last few years and things have moved towards owner occupier-type apartment designs as opposed to investor-grade. “There’s three-bedroom apartments – which is pretty rare – at the top two levels. “There’s some good-sized two-bedroom apartments – they’re typically 70 square metre apartments so they’re pretty reasonable-sized apartments considering the things that people used to build.” Twenty-five parking spaces are proposed, including 22 in stacker systems.

Pet projects for festival Organisers of Altona Beach Film Festival, now in its fourth year, are hoping to attract a record number of entries with this year’s theme of “pets”. Festival president Annette Stephens said many could relate to pets and loved to film them. “Most people have pets and on the internet there’s a lot of videos about pets and their funny antics, so it’s very popular to film your pet,” she said. “People can film that easily on their phone, lap top computers or iPads. “We do want to attract a wider audience.” She said the theme was also open to interpretation. “It also could relate to a pet love, your pet project,” Ms Stephens said. “The Beach Boys made a very famous album called Pet Sounds, so there’s a lot of interpretations.” Films, including titles and credits, can be no longer than seven minutes.

The judging panel comprises professional local filmmakers, producers and directors. Awards will be presented in age categories of under 13, under 21 and open age. There will also be Best in Festival and People’s Choice (vote by clapping) awards. All films entered, along with awards and prize money, will be presented at a gala film screening at Altona Theatre on August 18. Tour reveals secrets By Goya Dmytryshchak A guided tour of “God’s half acre” will wind past the unmarked grave of the man who informed police Ned Kelly was making body armour. The tour of Williamstown Cemetery for Australian Heritage Month will take in the final resting place of Daniel Kennedy, along with those of many unknown or forgotten citizens. Hosted by Friends of Williamstown Cemetery and Williamstown Historical Society, the tour, called My Story, is the product of painstaking research. Society president Brian Haynes said Mr Kennedy, who died in 1921, was buried in an unmarked grave in what he calls “God’s half acre” with his wife. “Kennedy reported to the police the whereabouts of Ned Kelly and that Kelly was working on his now famous body armour,” Mr Haynes said. “At first, he wasn’t believed, but his information did assist in Kelly’s capture. “Local hostility resulted in Kennedy having to move away from Greta and he finally settled in Williamstown where he could lead a much quieter life.” He said visitors would hear the sad tale of toddler cousins Julia Sutherland and Michael Brown who were hit by a train in 1859, and pass by the grave of an unknown Aboriginal who died about 300 years ago and whose body was recovered during work near Kororoit Creek in 1887. Friends co-ordinator Meg Jenkins said many would be surprised to learn the cemetery had Australia’s largest mass grave, created when about 800 bodies were reinterred from the original Point Gellibrand buriel ground. “Because it was tidal and the Victorian

railways wanted the land, the bodies were exhumed and moved into a mass grave in the old part of the cemetery, which is part of the tour,” she said. “Some of them were convicts, some of them were early settlers; people coming off boats with … they called it yellow fever, but

Budget pride and criticism The final state budget to be handed down before the next election has attracted a mixed response in Melbourne’s inner west. The 2018-19 budget includes almost $30 million for a new junior secondary school to be built in Seddon, $7.4 million for rebuilding Dinjerra Primary School in Braybrook and money to upgrade Whitten Oval and purchase land to rebuild Footscray Hospital. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said he “couldn’t be prouder” to see a new school campus being built in Seddon. “It’s the culmination of years and years of effort, and now it’s being delivered for local families,” he said. Mr Noonan said another highlight was the $2.1 million to upgrade sports facilities at Bayside College’s two campuses. But Craig Rowley, chief executive of western suburbs advocacy group LeadWest, said the budget failed to provide enough investment to keep pace with the booming population in Melbourne’s west. “We’re disappointed that the budget did not include a full funding commitment for the Footscray Hospital,” he said. “What is also missing in this budget is funding for the active and public transport that Melbourne’s west desperately needs to reduce our over-dependence on cars.” Benjamin Millar

School shocked by funding snub By Benjamin Millar Students and parents at Footscray’s secondary schools have hit out at a lack of funding for urgent works in last week’s state budget. While the state government confirmed that $29.2 million will be allocated to build the Seddon Secondary Campus as part of the Footscray Learning Precinct, no money was announced towards refurbishing Footscray City College or Gilmore College for Girls, the two other campuses. Year 11 Footscray City College student Erica

Giudici said the school’s student intake in recent years is splitting the school at its seams. “They want year 7s to have the best first year experience, but the numbers keep growing and they have to shove all the seniors into these cramped and dimly lit classrooms,” she said. “When I entered year 7 there were 150 kids in the year, this past year there were 275.” Erica said her maths class has 27 students and the early part of each lesson is wasted as students search other rooms for spare tables. “People have to sit on the floor while the teacher explains what we’re doing then go out

and find somewhere else to work,” she said. “But announcing a new school looks better than renovating two existing schools.” From 2020, new year 7 students will begin their studies at the Gilmore campus, which will become co-educational, while years 8 to 12 will be at the Footscray City College campus. The Seddon campus is expected to open in 2021. FCC council president Karen Ingram said without funding to begin modifying the existing schools, it is difficult to see how the 2020 launch date is possible. “While we welcome investment in the FLP

secondary school’s southern campus, we are extremely disappointed that zero funding has been allocated to upgrade existing facilities at FCC and the intended junior campus at Gilmore.” Ms Ingram said the schools had been led to believe the works for the transition would get under way sooner than later. “The master plans have already been drawn up,” she said. “There is a concern that it could effect our enrolment if the schools aren’t ready in time.” The state government did not respond to a request for comment.

Our wizard of the stage There really is no place like home, according to Sheridan Anderson. The Maribyrnong actor has been touring Australia with the London Palladium production of The Wizard of Oz for more than six months. Featuring musical theatre star Anthony Warlow as The Wizard and rising star Samantha Dodemaide as Dorothy Gale, the production has visited Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide ahead of its opening next week at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre. Anderson said after previous experience in shows with shorter runs, it has been good to have a longer running stint in the ensemble with some of the industry’s shining lights. “It’s such a great cast, you can really learn from them,” she said. “It’s nice to have different characters to play every night.” The former Footscray City College student

has been enjoying being part of a story so deeply familiar to generations of children and adults alike – she even played Dorothy as a 10-year-old at school. “People grow up with the story. As a kid I loved it for its songs and characters. As you get older you realise the story, and it starts to hit home that everything you want you already have – it’s a really positive message to give to children.” Before joining the production, Anderson began a dance school with her sisters. While she has loved travelling with the show, she is excited to be coming home. “Travelling is great but I love Melbourne, it’s such an amazing place,” she said. MY PLACE From the beaches to his beloved mouth organ band, Ivan Krmelic has everything he needs right here in the west. He speaks with Benjamin Millar What’s your connection with Williamstown? I have lived in Williamstown since 1998. I was living in Box Hill and working in Laverton, it was a long drive through the traffic. I’m very happy here, I can’t fault it, I couldn’t hope for a better neighbourhood.

I like the atmosphere of it. I’m about 600 metres from Williamstown beach so I can walk there. In summertime I just like walking around, it is a nice and cosy place. I find the people to be very nice, I’m very comfortable with them. It’s not too overcrowded yet, whatever I need I can find in this area. Do you have particular favourite places? I like the Chinese restaurants, I like to try all sorts of things like Indian, Chinese, Italian, there’s always something new to try. How did you become involved with the Yarraville Mouth Organ Band? I joined about three and a half years ago. I have a friend – we met ballroom dancing – and he

What do you love most about the area?

was a member of the band for many years. He tried to invite me to come but I was still working, I was too busy, but then I said ‘OK Joe I will come’. I’m sorry I didn’t join sooner. What can you tell us about the band? It was established in 1933, it’s now about 85 years old. I understand it’s the only mouth organ band left in Australia. I’m loyal and traditional, I want to see the band reach 100 years and more.

Have you mastered the harmonica yet? I’m still learning, I have a lot to learn yet – it’s a steep climb. I did try a little diatonic harmonica, used for the blues, but I wasn’t really serious I just messed about. In the band we play the chromatic harmonica. They gave us a book with about 140 or 150 songs, they are mainly older songs but there are a few newer ones. What’s the best thing about being involved?

I love the people; they are a really nice, friendly bunch. We went to a nursing home yesterday, to make people happy for an hour and a half – you just can’t put a price on it. People were dancing and singing and clapping, it’s actually a reward in itself. I would really like to encourage other people to join the band. Altona Sports Club basks in awards euphoria Sitting around with the gang a day after their big night at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, when Altona Sports Club won two prestigious Community Clubs Victoria awards, the club’s president David Smith sums up the feeling. “To think we started 59 years ago as a workers’ club catering mainly to the needs of homesick British migrants to what we are today – it makes you realise just how far we’ve come,” he says. Held at the Sofitel on Saturday, April 28, the Community Clubs Victoria black-tie event was packed to the rafters with representatives from 1500 community clubs, as well as dignitaries such as MPs Marlene Kairouz, Danny O’Brien, Bruce Atkinson and Cindy McLeish. The Altona Sports Club crew was stunned and delighted to hear their club announced as winner of Best Entertainment Program of the Year. And when they heard that David Smith, president since 2012, was named as President of the Year, they erupted.

Vice-chairman Wally Perkovic said it would be hard to find a more deserving winner than Mr Smith. “David did his apprenticeship as a club member for 26 years before he became director in 1988, then made treasurer in 2001,” he said. “David, totally supported by his wife Rita, has steered the club to the success we enjoy today. “He established a war chest to enable the renewal of our bistro, which is now a huge drawcard for young families in the Hobsons Bay area. This transformed our customer demographic and set us up for an exciting future. But, beyond his outstanding management and vision, David has inclusion and fairness in his DNA. His level of community engagement is peerless – he and Rita work tirelessly with people in Hobsons Bay and beyond.”

The president’s response to the win was typically modest: “It was fantastic to receive recognition from my peers and the industry – I really couldn’t ask for more.” Committee members said winning the Entertainment Program award was a testament to the club’s high calibre of entertainment. They point to upcoming shows such as Rubber Soul, a Beatles

Cheese has long been a celebratory part of my life. In my younger days, I fondly remember my flatmates and I enjoying our weekly “Cheeses Of The World” day, for which I would assemble the world’s biggest cheese platter … a rustic-looking, heavy-handed affair boasting as many international cheeses as we could lay our hands on at the local Woolworths deli counter. We’d sit around drinking cask wine and gorging ourselves on Dutch smoked cheddar. On a recent trip to Gippsland, my hubby and I enjoyed a rather more refined and creative ploughman’s platter at Prom Country Cheese. We were treated to the Cheviot, a mature, tangy, semi-hard sheep’s milk cheese with a mild, piquant flavour, and the gold-medal winning Prom Picnic, a mild, semi-hard pecorino cheese that teams beautifully with apple and pear. When assembling your own cheese platter, there are a few things to remember. Don’t crowd the platter. Leave enough room between the cheeses so that guests don’t accidentally stick their hands into the aged cheddar when they’re trying to cut themselves a wedge of brie. Keep it simple – go for one or two really special cheeses, as opposed to half a dozen ordinary ones. You don’t need to go overboard with accompaniments … some dried fruit and nuts or some generous strips of prosciutto will suffice. Go for a few different textures and provide different knives for different cheeses – or they’ll all end up tasting the same!

SPORT Altona fights back to its winning ways Altona has broken through for its first win of the season in the NRL Victoria first grade. After a disappointing season opener, the Roosters have started to resemble the team they had envisaged before a ball was kicked, picking up a draw and a win in their past two matches after starting with straight losses. Roosters coach Damien Riki is confident his team has turned the corner after its slow start. “Things are starting to come together now,” he said. “We’re ticking more boxes as we go along.” It helped that Altona was close to full strength for its 28-18 win over Waverley Oakleigh Panthers at Bruce Comben Reserve on Saturday. The return of the Roosters underage Storm representative stars was telling. One of those players, centre Tai Pretty, had a significant influence over the result, scoring three tries. “He made some real good defensive decisions to shut down their plays,” Riki said.

“This was his first game playing seniors, so he was so excited playing first grade with us.” Another player returning from Storm underage duty was Pio Nakubuwai. The full-back was outstanding defensively and with his leadership skills. “He controlled our defence, communicating with them, telling them to stay left or stay right, put even numbers around both sides of the ruck,” Riki said. The pick of the Altona forwards was Zev John. John made plenty of line breaks and was solid defensively. Altona still has ground to make up, but is just one game outside the top four now. The Roosters can close the gap further when they travel to Sunbury Tigers on Saturday.

Is this the same code that boasts increasing participation numbers, television and radio ratings for which media companies are paying millions, record-breaking attendance numbers and more coverage in space and time than in the history of the game? Yes, it is that same code. By the way, the game is called Australian Rules football, not AFL. Is the game in trouble? Yes and no. It is in great danger of disappearing into its own analytical chasm (if you get my drift) because the journos writing about the game are far outnumbered by journos writing about the game’s controversy of the code. Most of that controversy is manufactured to fill papers and internet sites and ensure those journos have radio and television spots to fill.

Since Anzac day, the Brookers have played an exhaustive three games in 10 days in the Western Region Football League division 3, but first-year coach Jason Hamilton insists the team remained upbeat and willing for the back end of that heavy schedule. Not helped by the fixture pile up, the Brookers faded out in the second half against Tarneit Titans at Wootten Road Reserve on Saturday, losing by 56 points. Braybrook will have a full week to prepare for this Saturday’s trip to Glen Orden. For Hamilton, it will be the way the Brookers respond to their back-to-back losses that matters. “The talk was all positive after the game today,” he said. “If we put the hard yards in on the training track, I’m sure we’ll get the rewards.” Hamilton has undertaken a quest to change the culture at the Brookers since day one of pre-season. The message is slowly getting through, but there is still plenty of work to be done at Pennell Reserve. “It’s definitely been a tough challenge since we started pre-season in October to try and change the culture down there,” he said. “We have to change if we want to progress and become a top-four side and a lot of blokes have got to realise the changes have to start now. “It’s going to be a big test for us, but the players are very respectful and they go out there and try and do the right things.”

City West Falcon’s depth the decider City West Falcons opened up their account in the Victorian Netball League courtesy of a strong second half on Wednesday night. The Falcons showed their depth in the convincing win as their four Australian Netball League players were missing from the game. Falcons’ coach Marg Lind was happy with the side’s performance in the 68-48 win against the Southern Saints. Scores were level at half-time, before the Falcons shot away in the second half with 40 to 20 goals. “The players settled a bit more and know what to expect now,” she said. “The Saints are an improved side and we were able to wear them down.” The Falcons started with Kath Knott and Madelyn Gray in goals before switching Tharjini Sivalingam into goal shooter at half-time. Lind said Knott produced what they had come to expect for her, while the other two shooters, who were up from division 1, performed well.

“Jini had a strong second half,” she said. “I think in division 1 they are still learning how to feed to her. She plays with Maggie [Lind] and Maddy on a Saturday and they have that chemistry that works for her. “Maddy has trained with the group. She was really solid and had a good volume of shots playing out front from Jini and Kath.” Lind said she liked the attacking end combinations in both halves, while they tried a few different combinations in the new-look defence. Lind said as well as trying to get the wins on the board early while missing their ANL players, it was about making sure the players were handling the challenge. She said sometimes players didn’t know until hours before the game what division they were playing in. “The players have to be switched on as they don’t know if they are playing division 1 or championship division.

“It’ll take five to six weeks to make the transition,” she said. “We’re making sure we nurse their confidence and making sure they’re not overwhelmed.” It was a good night for the Falcons as all three teams won their games. Uneeq Palavi, who came up from under-19s, shot the winning goal after the siren in the Falcons’ 57-56 division 1 win. In under-19s, the Falcons won 48-38. The Falcons this week face Boroondara Express. Meanwhile, Falcons shooter Jane Cook has joined Collingwood’s Super Netball side as a training partner. CYs snag a promotion By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown CYMS is a team in a hurry in the Victorian Amateur Football Association women’s section. The CYs opened their inaugural season with three consecutive wins in division 3 – so impressive that league headquarters phoned last week to offer promotion to division 2 as part of a re-shuffle of clubs to create more balanced and competitive divisions. The hot start, coupled with the elevation to the second tier, was a welcome shock for CYs co-president Steph Payne. “It’s definitely caught us by surprise, the amount of success we’ve had to date,” she said. “It almost feels like we’ve been playing together for a lot longer than just the start of this season.” The CYs players are looking forward to the challenge of playing division 2 football for the remainder of the season. The CYs were on track to challenge for the division 3 flag in their first year, having been

the only undefeated side after three rounds and with a sky high percentage of 350 so the temptation was there to bide their time in the third tier and go for glory. Payne canvassed the opinions of some players and members and it was decided to go for the greater challenge of competing in division 2. “We’ve got the talent there and I think the team that we’ve got will do just as well in division 2,” she said. “The girls are really excited to see how they will go.” Laurence Henry has already had a big influence on the women’s program. The coach has been hard at work trying to fast-track an inexperienced team with some players involved in football for the first time. “Laurence will give a set of instructions, whether it’s a quarter-time speech or just during training, and almost immediately the girls will adopt an action that he’s instructed,” Payne said. “The absorption level of all the girls wanting to learn and understand the game is huge. If you look at where we started in November …

we’ve come a long way, so we’re very happy with how it’s all progressing.” One player making her way in the game for the first time is full-forward Georgina Petty. Petty had never played football when she signed up late in the pre-season, but has been a revelation with seven goals in two games. “She’s never played football before, but just has an incredible natural ability,” Payne said. “We’re quite excited to see where she ends up.” The main star for Williamstown CYMS so far has been Hannah Elliott, one of the most tenacious operators in the CYs midfield who dominates the stoppages. “She’s got incredible talent,” Payne said. “She reads the play extremely well.” Others to impress are Scarlett Kennedy, Felicia Yiannis and Kacie Cook. Payne knows there will be challenges coming the way of CYs, particularly in a tougher division 2 competition, but the journey into the unknown is a thrill. “We’re really excited to see where we’ll be at the end of this year,” she said.

Josh Schache kicked a goal on the run from 50 metres to give Footscray a thrilling one-point win over Richmond in the Victorian Football League. Schache impressed with three goals, 12 disposals and five marks in his return from injury. Andrew Panayi was also dangerous around goal for the Scray with three goals, while Josh Wallis was the leading possession winner with 32 disposals. Footscray will take a trip across the West Gate Bridge to play Port Melbourne at North Port Oval. Williamstown enjoyed a 33-point win over Coburg Lions at Piranha Park. Ben Cavarra was a livewire for the Seagulls with five goals. The Seagulls will return home on Saturday to square off with the Northern Blues.

Basketball

A gallant Altona was out-classed 82-71 by top-of-the-ladder Camberwell Dragons in the Big V basketball men’s division 2 at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday. The Gators lagged slightly behind on the scoreboard most of the way and could not reel the Dragons in despite a strong finish. Nathanael Coory was Altona’s top scorer with 17, while James Till came off the bench for a double double 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. The Gators (2-7) travel to Wangaratta to face the North East Bushrangers (0-8) on Saturday night.
