Survivor’s Anzac tribute
By Tate Papworth For Frank Smolen, Anzac Day holds a different kind of significance. Mr Smolen, who will be 100 in October, is a survivor of Auschwitz, the German concentration camp which was the largest mass murder site in human history. At 21 he joined the Polish resistance when Nazi Germany occupied his country. He spent three years at Auschwitz after the Gestapo discovered his allegiance to the resistance.
Following the war, Mr Smolen moved to Australia. He met his wife, Hedwig, on the boat trip over and the two shared a happy life in Footscray before she died in 2011. Mr Smolen said he admires the way Australia commemorates those who have served the country in war. “Australians do it well. No other country in the world recognises their returned soldiers and Diggers like that. They haven’t forgotten,” he said. Today, Mr Smolen lives at aged care residence,
St Bernadette’s in Sunshine. While Anzac Day commemorations aren’t something he’s taken part in previously, Mr Smolen was moved when he was asked to be part of St Bernadette’s service last year. Mr Smolen’s daughter-in-law, Ina, said the occasion proved to be a cathartic experience. “St Bernadette’s asked him to lay the wreath for their Anzac Day service because he was the oldest one in the centre,” she said. “He was so emotional. I really think that is the closest he’s ever come to somebody acknowledging what
he’s been through.” Ina said the family hopes to record Mr Smolen’s experiences during World War II to ensure that his memories and his important story isn’t lost. “We have asked him why he did it. Why he was part of the underground? “He said, ‘I did it for Poland. I did it for the love of my country.’ That’s exactly how we look at our Anzacs and what they have been through at Gallipoli. They just do it because it’s for their country,” she said.

School’s in for Seddon project By Benjamin Millar A new junior high school campus will open in Seddon in 2021 after the state government announced almost $30 million for the project will be included in next week’s budget. The government confirmed on Monday that $29.2 million will be allocated to build the Seddon Secondary Campus for years 7-9 as part of the previously announced Footscray Learning Precinct. The school will open in 2021, one year after
Footscray’s all-girls Gilmore College becomes a co-educational junior campus and Footscray City College becomes a senior campus for years 10-12. One lead principal will be appointed to oversee the entire precinct, with campus principals also based at each site. The three campuses will have a “shared learning framework” and one school council. Education Minister James Merlino said the new campus will help keep pace with the area’s growing population.
Melissa Horne, president of high school lobby group SKY High and Labor’s Williamstown candidate for the November election, said the funding was a massive win for the community which had lobbied hard for a new high school for the Seddon, Kingsville and Yarraville area. “Today’s announcement that a new school will be opened for the first intake of students in 2021 is testament to persistence and community activism,” she said. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the announcement was “momentous”.
“With a pre-school, primary school, secondary school and university on the one site, the Footscray Learning Precinct will become an Australian-first.” Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said the state government will be upgrading schools across Footscray. Footscray City College campus will be refurbished, while Footscray City Primary School will be redeveloped to increase capacity and a new early learning centre and a new hall and gymnasium will be built on the site.
Altona teen makes a model splash Altona teenager Hope Mancer has won this month’s Top Model Worldwide competition in London – a stepping stone to Miss World. The 15-year-old competed against about 40 finalists in her age category from all over the world, including the US, UK, South America and South Africa. She won the inaugural Australian leg of the competition last month – her first time on the catwalk. Hope, who is signed with the Tanya Powell Model Agency, plans to finish school and complete a university degree in journalism while modelling. Two years ago, Hope and a friend decided to do a modelling course. “It was her idea and I was just going along for the ride,” she said. “When I completed the course I found out I really liked it so I continued. “I’ve been doing photo shoots for about two years, but have never actually done runway before. This was the first competition that I had completed. “I would love to do Miss World – I think that’s the dream – but I have got to wait two years before I’m age-appropriate for that.” The Top Model Australia Worldwide licence is owned by Deborah Miller, who also has the licence for the Miss World Australia pageant and is the owner of CM Models agency. “The objective of the competition is to give young aspiring models an opportunity to enter an international competition and start their career,” she said. “There will be heats starting in September around Australia for the 2019 competition. Ute smashes into jewel shop A ute has ploughed into an Altona jewellery shop. Witnesses to the incident on Wednesday afternoon last week say the driver said he passed out at the wheel from a medical condition. David Szigeti, the owner of Uccello Jewellery in Maidstone Street, said that if the crash had happened later, the street would have been full of schoolchildren. Mr Szigeti said the southbound ute veered off the road and smashed through his shop’s double-laminate glass about 12.20pm. “He’s literally just careered off the road to the left, taken out that minor fencing that’s near the school crossing there, and then careered into the front,” he said. “It could have been horrendously worse. My sister works for me – and we had a customer in store at the time, so it could have been a lot worse. My parents were here a few minutes before.” An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the driver, a man in his 60s, was taken to Western Hospital in a stable condition with no obvious injuries. Footscray wins big sport victory By Benjamin Millar A state government cash splash will bring “world-class” soccer facilities, including Australia’s premier training academy, to Footscray and Maribyrnong. A $10 million grant will help develop Footscray Park and Robert Barrett Reserve with new training and playing facilities for Melbourne Victory’s W-League and Academy squads. The state government has also allocated $2.1 million towards a new oval at Bayside
College’s Newport campus and extending a pavilion at the school’s Williamstown campus. Melbourne Victory chairman Anthony Di Pietro said the investments would help shape the careers of future Matildas and Socceroos. “Football participation levels have never been higher, so this facility is going to have an incredibly positive impact on the community,” he said. The money will help fund three flood-lit pitches at Footscray Park, six changerooms, undercover viewing areas and administration
and education areas for coaches, staff and players. Two new training pitches will be created at Robert Barrett Reserve to support the Victory’s expanding women’s and youth programs. Sport Minister John Eren said the state government was aware more needed to be done to support women and girls in professional sport. “We are levelling the playing field for women’s sport – upgrading changerooms, grounds and elite facilities across Victoria,” he said.
Clubs to benefit from the Bayside College investments include Williamstown Football Club, Williamstown Cricket Club, Williamstown CYMS Football Club, Williamstown CYMS Cricket Club and Williamstown Junior Football Club. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the funding would improve facilities, particularly for women and girls. “We will have the most elite players and very young first-timers using the very best facilities,” he said.
VU deal kicks off A new sponsorship deal is helping sporting women in the west put their best foot forward. Victoria University has cemented its role as one of the west’s leading supporters of women in sport by locking in as a sponsor of the WRFL’s new female football and netball leagues. The move comes on top of the continuing sponsorship of the VU Western Spurs, the Western Bulldogs VFLW team, the Western Bulldogs and Western Jets. WRFL chief executive Matthew Duck said the league was excited to be partnering with Victoria University as it kicked off its inaugural seasons of female football and netball. “As an organisation renowned for its long-standing support of female sport, VU was an obvious partner for us, and provides a range of exciting opportunities for the entire league on a number of levels,” he said. Debbie Lee, head of women’s football at the Western Bulldogs, said the support has been
vital to the success and survival of the VU Western Spurs. “The partnership has allowed the Spurs to provide more women and girls with the opportunity to play AFL,” she said. “It has allowed us to provide more teams, resources and build a safe and inclusive environment for all.” Victoria University has also been a partner of Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens Super Netball team for a decade. Victoria University vice chancellor Professor Peter Dawkins said the expanded involvement in female football will provide sponsorship from the grassroots to the elite level, signalling the “dawning of a new bright day” where women’s sport enjoys equal attention in the Australian sporting landscape. “I am excited to see where this partnership takes us as a community.”

An over-height truck collided with the Napier Street bridge in Footscray on Friday, the second such crash in just over a week. A west-bound container truck struck one of the bright yellow protection beams attached to the bridge about 12.30pm Friday, bringing traffic to a standstill and causing extensive delays to trains. More than 70 trucks have struck the four-metre bridge in the past decade.

A tutorial in frustration By Henrietta Cook/The Age The most infuriating moment of Eliott’s commute to school comes eight minutes after he has left home. That’s when we pass Seabrook Primary, a school the six-year-old can’t attend because he lives outside its zone. A glitch in Victoria’s enrolment rules means Eliott has to travel 10 kilometres by car every morning to access his “neighbourhood” school, Altona Green Primary. “Sometime it takes us 40 minutes, sometimes it takes 38 minutes,” the grade 1 pupil says. “On the highway it’s a bit slow because there are lots of cars.” As the crow flies, Eliott lives a kilometre from Altona Green. But a sprawling wetland separates his Point Cook home from the schoolyard and there’s no direct road access. It’s a scenario that plays out across Melbourne, a city where invisible lines hike up property prices, spark grassroots community campaigns and upend many families lives. The Department of Education and Training Victoria says it may take into account major geographic features, including rivers and creeks, when determining enrolment boundaries. But The Age has spoken to families who say eight-lane highways, streams, golf courses and even an RAAF base have been ignored when they’ve been allocated a school. Sometimes the so-called closest school is not that close at all. As we grind to a halt on Point Cook Road, Eliott’s father, Pablo Feruglio, struggles to contain his frustration. “The policy is designed so families go to the school that is closest to them,” he says. “But no one has looked at how families access that

school. If I could fly, it would be the perfect school.” Pablo fired off emails to department bureaucrats and argued that his son should be allowed to attend Seabrook Primary. But his pleas were unsuccessful. “They told me about their straight line policy,” he says. “They draw a line on the map … if you are on one side you go to school A and if you are on the other side you go to school B.”
According to a department spokesman, the current policy strikes a balance between ensuring families can attend the local school and having the option of enrolling at other schools when there is room. Pablo says he’s not chasing a better school. “A lot of families try to change schools because of the reputation,” he says. “These are all good schools. This is purely about logistics.”

Council reveals budget details A $4.3 million allocation to rebuild the demolished Church Street Children’s Centre in West Footscray is the big-ticket item in Maribyrnong council’s proposed 2018-2019 annual budget. The Draft Annual Budget and Strategic Resource Plan 2018-2019, due to be tabled at last night’s council meeting, predicts total expenditure of $132.6 million from projected revenue of $148.6 million. The council will raise rates by 2.25 per cent, the maximum amount allowed by the state government. Eligible pensioners will receive rates rebates up to a maximum of $189. Parks, open space and streetscapes will receive $8.2 million, while a further $8.2 million will be spent on roads and $2.1 million on footpaths and cycleways. The council, finally debt free after years in the red, has elected to run a surplus in preparation for future big-ticket spends such as the proposed upgrade of the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre and RecWest Footscray. A “Message from the Mayor and CEO” included in the draft budget notes the budget includes more than $60 million on capital works. A Facebook Q&A session on the budget will be held from 6.30pm on Wednesday, May 2. Submissions close on May 25 and will be heard on June 6. People can take part in one or two shifts: 9am-noon and/or 1-3pm. Lunch will be provided. The emergency roles undertaken by council staff are volunteer roles and the exercise aims to provide realistic experience. Actors are being sought for a test emergency evacuation centre being set up at Laverton next month. Laverton Community Hub will be turned into an emergency relief centre on Monday, May 14. Hospital tops budget wish list By Benjamin Millar and Goya Dmytryshchak Inner-west councils have set out their wish list for priority funding in next week’s state budget. Maribyrnong council chief executive Stephen Wall said the highest priority is funding to start work on building a new Footscray hospital. “This hospital is critical to the provision of health services in western Melbourne as well as being a teaching hospital,” he said. Mr Wall also pressed the need for upgrading

Maribyrnong’s wish list rounds out with a call for more funding for sporting facilities, restoration of Footscray Town Hall, a new rail link to Melbourne Airport via Footscray and Maribyrnong, and more funding for the Maribyrnong River’s edge including $2.8 million to complete the Temple to Temple trail. Hobsons Bay council is seeking investment
in the Melbourne Metro 2 rail project, foreshore management and waste recovery. Deputy mayor Tony Briffa said Hobsons Bay had asked the state government to include in its 2018-19 budget the feasibility of Melbourne Metro 2, linking Clifton Hill with Newport via the CBD and Fishermans Bend. “The real benefits of Melbourne Metro 2 could be further realised by extending the project from Newport through Altona North up to Sunshine, encompassing council’s strategic redevelopment sites such as the proposed Precinct 15 development in Altona
North, as well as with a supporting network of cycle pathways and increased local public buses,” Cr Briffa said. Hobsons Bay has called for more investment in foreshore management, governance and asset protection to cope with a projected sea level rise of 50 centimetres by 2070, more frequent extreme weather events and increased erosion. Hobsons Bay is also seeking investment in waste and resource recovery, after contributing almost $9 million to the landfill levy over the past nine years.
Let’s talk mental health Young people are being urged to warm up their night by diving headlong into an evening of entertainment and discussion for the inaugural Hot Topics event. Hot Topics is a committee of young people passionate about issues that are important to young people living in Melbourne’s west. Their first event will focus on mental health, particularly among young migrant and young refugee people. Committee member Julia Coscolluela said mental health was not talked about enough. “The event is about mental health, which is a very broad topic, but we’re specifically targeting mental health among people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds,” she said. “So we’ll be talking about things like settlement issues and immigration, it’s something that is close to us.” The evening will feature spoken word, film,
music and a panel discussion. Committee member Shrnyaa Sharma said the organisers brainstormed about the idea for quite a while before combining the ideas of mental health, immigration and identity. “We wanted to explore things like culture shock,” she said. “It’s just more relatable when it’s coming from young people, if it’s something from other young people it feels like it will be more relevant.” Doors open 4pm for a 4.30pm start and the event includes dinner, at Phoenix Youth Centre, 72 Buckley Street, Footscray. MY PLACE Altona’s Jim Hevey loves researching history. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I grew up in Spotswood, enjoyed growing up there in an area when everything was nice and quiet everywhere, then moved through Yarraville and then to Altona in 1974. In 1977, I joined the Lions Club and celebrated 40 years last September. I’m a member of the Altona Laverton Historical Society, the Williamstown Historical Society and the Footscray Historical Society, for different reasons, which help me doing some research on different things. I was a prem baby and I was taken to Tweddle in Footscray … a book I did for them two years ago was one of the best research projects I’ve ever undertaken; I really, really enjoyed it. I did it as a fundraiser. What do you like about Hobsons Bay?

Quiet. By the sea. I enjoy research and finding out things about Altona. Growing up in Spotswood, the houses now are selling for $1 million. Mum and dad’s home was in Melbourne Road. My grandfather was an Anzac and the homes along Melbourne Road up to South Kingsville were soldier-settlement homes. So … First World War along the front of Melbourne Road; Second World War, behind, off Mary Street and Hudsons Road. It’s just a nice area. What don’t you like? There’s nothing I don’t like. SUPER SPROUTS Can you think of a vegie that is more maligned than the poor old brussels sprout? Kids and adults alike have been known to turn up their noses at the mere mention of them … “I hate the smell. I hate the taste! I just HATE them.” Perhaps it’s the way our parents boiled them into oblivion that contributed to their reputation as the social leper of the vegetable world. Well I, for one, have long been a fan of the humble sprout. I love them pan-fried with butter, garlic and a good squeeze of lemon. Chuck in some pancetta for a match made in heaven. But if you really want to experience just how delicious brussels sprouts can be, try your hand at brussels sprouts sliders. There are recipe variations available online, but basically … halve the sprouts, toss them in olive oil and sea salt and roast until golden on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. The sprout halves become your slider “buns”. Fill them with crispy bacon, a slice of brie and caramelised onion, spear it all together with a toothpick (just like a mini-burger) and you’ll find it hard to stop at one. Not only do they look and taste great, they’re a super option for those keeping an eye on their carb intake.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir says Los Pollos adds a bit of zing to Footscray There was a definite ripple of excitement that hit the inner west as it became known that a Mexican chicken joint would be stepping up to take over the premises formerly inhabited by Burger Business. Somehow – between checking out the business’ Facebook page and website, and then talking with a few folks – I convinced myself that Los Pollos was part of a franchise deal. It seems that is not the case, although it certainly looks the part if management care to move in that direction and move into other locations. They make their own corn chips, but when we ask, we’re told the tortillas are brought in. So how does it stack up – some real-deal Mexican tucker; or just another Tex-Mex place? Well, it’s definitely more Tex-Mex than La Tortilleria – and that’s fine by us. After we order, we adjourn to the lovely garden space out back. Bennie is impressed with his Super LP Burrito with grilled chicken, rice, beans, salsa, queso tasty, pico de gallo, guacamole and jalapeno crema ($16.50). He offers his dad a taste, after which I, too, conclude this is better than similar offerings you’ll find at similar places elsewhere. And, yes, it eats bigger than it looks. It comes with a handful of corn chips. My half chicken combo with two sides, two salsas and six tortillas ($18.95) is more of a mixed bag. I like the chicken, even if it doesn’t provide the sort of lip-smacking joy for which

No answers for Altona By Lance Jenkinson Try as it might, Altona East Phoenix could not overcome an early deficit and wound up with a 2-0 home loss to Corio in their Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 north-west clash at Paisley Park on Saturday. The Phoenix had to play catch-up football after conceding the early goal, but their enterprising attacking moves saw them increasingly exposed at the back and they copped a second goal to have their enthusiastic charge snuffed out. It leaves the Phoenix with a disappointing one win from four games and having to play catch-up in the standings. “It’s always disappointing to lose at home,” Phoenix president Leigh Karafillis said. “The boys dug deep, they showed a lot of character and a lot of heart, but sometimes in soccer you just don’t score. “The longer the game goes, you push forward to try to get that equaliser, you get vulnerable at the back and unfortunately they ended up scoring again in the last five or six minutes to kill us off.” It was a big week at Altona East as coach Alan Davidson handed in his resignation citing increasing personal commitments. The Phoenix has appointed Ben Stafrace as caretaker coach. “Ben’s come back to the club as an assistant and he’s been enjoying it,” Karafillis said. “He’s looking to get into coaching in the future, so we thought it would be a good opportunity for him.” While it has been a challenging start to the season for Altona East, spirits remain high. The Phoenix opened the season with a 3-0 win over Westvale, but it has been slim pickings since. They have lost four in a row and failed to find the back of the net in that time, but Karafillis expects the team to be up for the fight against Fitzroy City at Paisley Park on Saturday. “We don’t dwell on losses, we look forward,” he said. “Once the game is done, we dust ourselves off and get ready for the next week.” The major positive to come out of the first part of the season for Altona East has been the form of central defensive pairing George Noulas and teenager John Limperis. In men’s state league 1, Altona City and Western Suburbs were locked 2-2 after 90 minutes. Michael Simms and Marcus Sherif scored City’s goals. Yarraville Glory earned a valuable point on the road at Hoppers Crossing in a nil-all draw. In state league 3, Williamstown enjoyed a commanding 3-0 win over Moreland United,
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The
issue of the safety of female players was again in the news last week and it is a subject that I have been campaigning about for a couple of years in this column. The real problem is getting those running the game to stop talking about the explosion of interest and participation long enough to understand those participants are entering a building site without a hard hat and are blindfolded. We don’t give power saws to people who don’t know what they are doing, so why are we letting people play a high-velocity collision sport without the basic knowledge of self preservation and protection? The female version of the game has been constructed upside down. We want everyone playing and enjoying the game and that means walking home after the game, at worst nursing a few bumps and bruises.

annual reunion of the Footscray and Yarraville Socials Football club continues to grow each year despite the club going into recession in 1975. The F&Y Socials opened up the day a few years back to other clubs also no longer in existence and the reaction was very positive. Names such as Wembley Park, Seddon, Sunshine, Kensington and Brooklyn were powerhouses of the old FDFL and VFA. This year’s lunch will take place at Barkers Cafe at Whitten Oval on Friday, May 25. Werribee and Williamstown game last weekend was a timely reminder that both clubs faced extinction in the 1990s. Thankfully, today both have bright futures, whatever the future of the VFL competition. Werribee is settled into a new facility and recorded a gutsy win over its arch rival to claim the John Pyne Memorial Trophy.

trip west for the Bulldogs last weekend generated few highlights to dwell on during the return flight. Tim English, fast-tracked into the No.1 ruck role, is showing enough to suggest he has a bright future – even when pitted against the likes of Aaron Sandilands. The game this Friday night against Carlton will shape the season for the Bulldogs. They need to play enterprising, entertaining football and get some of that Bulldog dash and bash back into their game. Williamstown is licking its wounds after going down to western suburbs rivals Werribee by 41 points in the Victorian Football League at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. The Seagulls were competitive early in the first quarter and for most of the second term, but were bereft of any four quarter contributors. The opening term was played at a breakneck speed with little to separate the sides for the first 15 minutes, but Werribee put the foot down late in the term to reel off four unanswered goals to lead by 37 points at quarter-time. The second quarter was largely dictated by Williamstown and it got its rewards through a pair of goals to Lachie Schultz and one through Mitch Norton to cut the deficit back to 21. Two goals in three minutes to Werribee’s Nick Nott and Andrew Hooper spoiled the Seagulls fightback. Williamstown opened the third with goals to Jack Dorgan and Ben Cavarra to cut the margin to just 16, but that was as close as it would get. Werribee rattled off five of the next six goals

Gators fail to find traction as another game slips away

It was that familiar so-near-yet-so-far tale for Altona Gators in a 72-60 loss to Southern Peninsula Sharks in the Big V basketball men’s division 2 at Hillview Stadium on Saturday night. The Gators have been competitive in every game this season, but remain third last with a 1-5 record that has not reflected their fighting qualities. Gators coach Des Radoslovic believes his team has lacked a go-to player down the stretch in games. “We’re always in it right until the end,” he said. “The group is obviously fighting. “We just lack that little bit of star power.” One aspect hurting Altona is the lack of an imposing presence inside the paint. But the Gators might have found a solution to that with the return of centre James Till. Till left the Gators in the off season, pursuing a contract with Werribee Devils in the men’s
state championship, but that did not work out and he is back at The Swamp. Till came off the bench against the Sharks and made 12 points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes. “He’s going to be a key piece,” Radoslovic said. “He’s a big fella, athletic six-foot-seven, he’s so important to us because we don’t have much size and he’s our biggest player.” Till will make the players around him even better. It will take pressure off James Webster, who can be deployed as a stretch four after picking up his offensive game in recent weeks. “He’s one of our bigger guys and he’s been shooting the three ball really well,” Radoslovic said. “He’s always been a good defensive role player and a good steady veteran body, but he’s stepped up his offensive game of late. “He’ll benefit from Till coming in as it will free him up a little bit more.”
Tommy Scott has been a good leader for Altona this season. Scott is another who will benefit from the defensive presence of Till. “He’s just a tireless worker,” Radoslovic said. “He’s our best defensive player, he’s got a great work ethic … he’s a good all round player.” It was Southern Peninsula’s stars who decided the game. Benjamin James got hot from long range, dropping seven-from-nine three pointers for 25 points, while Colin Voss had 22 points and 17 rebounds. Altona will continue to resist the urge to bring in an import in favour of developing home grown talent. The Gators have an important double header weekend of matches, starting with a trip to Sherbrooke Suns on Saturday night and a home game against Pakenham Warriors on Sunday. Lance Jenkinson

Laverton made an impressive start to its Western Region Football League senior women’s campaign with a commanding 31-point win over Tarneit at Wootten Road Reserve on Saturday evening. Rebekka Doolan and Sasha Edwards kicked two goals apiece for Laverton, while Isabelle Porter was best-afield. Spotswood was also a big first-up winner, thrashing Point Cook Centrals by 69 points. West Footscray was held scoreless in a 133-point loss to Caroline Springs. In the VAFA women’s, undefeated Williamstown CYMS is one game clear on top of the division 3 ladder after thrashing Prahran Assumption by 56 points.

Final kick seals thriller By Lance Jenkinson A long-range set shot goal from forward Patrick Rose with 20 seconds left on the clock handed Altona a thrilling one-point victory over Spotswood in the Western Region Football League division 1 at J.K. Grant Reserve on Saturday. The Vikings led by 23 points at three-quarter time, but goals to Jason Marks, Dylan Callard and two to Josh Drage gave the Woodsmen an unlikely lead deep into time-on of the last quarter. It was Rose, one of the Vikings’ top new recruits, who owned the moment, saving his side with a match-winner from 50 metres out. “We thought if anyone was going to kick it from that distance, it was going to be him,” Vikings coach Saade Ghazi said. “He was recruited to the club to kick those big goals and he was able to do that against Deer Park in round one and again this week to win us the game.” Altona is off to a flying start. The Vikings faced a daunting opening three rounds, playing three of last season’s powerhouse sides,
but they are two-from-two with last year’s runner-up Sunshine to come in this Saturday’s mouth-watering round three encounter. It was important for the Vikings to back up and beat Spotswood in front of their fans. “A great win,” Ghazi said. “Obviously it was a home game, the president’s luncheon was on and there were quite a few people there, so it was good to get the four points against a strong footy team.” On the balance of play, Altona deserved the four points, albeit by the slimmest of margins. “We were obviously the best team for the first three quarters, we led all day,” Ghazi said. “Credit to Spotswood, they kept coming and kept getting their hands on the footy and they hit the front with a couple of minutes to go, so it got a bit nervy there.” Defensively, the Vikings have hardly put a foot wrong, conceding a stingy 58 points per game over the first two matches, but Ghazi would like to see his team lift its scoring rate. “Overall, it’s been good team defence, it’s not just your back six or seven,” he said. “It’s the way you get your numbers back and your midfielders rolling down and helping your

defenders and your forwards rolling down through the middle of the ground. “Defensively we were very good, but we’d like to score a bit more.” Jayden Post was Altona’s most consistent performer. He was solid as a rock at centre half-back and showed just how important he is to the structure of the team. Others to impress for Altona were Jack Marlais, Lee Spiteri and Luke Goetz, while Rose and Sean Tighe snagged two goals apiece. Elsewhere in division 1, Deer Park registered its first win of the campaign, beating Hoppers Crossing by 28 points. St Albans eclipsed Caroline Springs by 14 points, Sunshine accounted for Wyndhamvale by 48 points and Werribee Districts claimed top spot with a 73-point win over Albion. In division 2, Yarraville Seddon pummelled Parkside by 62 points and North Footscray eased to a 55-point win over Manor Lakes in the Saturday night showcase, but there were losses for Newport Power and West Footscray. In division 3, Laverton went down by 41 points to Tarneit and Braybrook will square off with North Sunshine in the Anzac Day clash.
Williamstown is the early pacesetter in the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league. The Fearons improved to 2-0 with a come-from-behind 12-7 victory over Camberwell at Fearon Reserve. Footscray bounced back in a big way with a 17-7 win over Caulfield, while Altona was pipped 8-7 by Surrey Park.

A perfect three-from-three, Footscray sits atop the ladder in the Hockey Victoria women’s premier league. The Bulldogs winning run continued with a 2-1 victory over MCC. Altona’s 3-1 loss to Camberwell sees it stuck at the bottom end of the standings. In men’s premier league, Footscray was overrun 4-3 by MCC after leading at half-time.
