Cat fight over strays By Goya Dmytryshchak The founder of a volunteer cat rescue group has been threatened with legal action by Hobsons Bay council if he takes an animal to The Lost Dogs Home. Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue’s Nathan Miles received a letter dated March 29 from Hunt & Hunt lawyers acting for the council stating that he could be fined $792.85 for delivering an animal to the home. The letter stated that “in accordance with section 84D of the Domestic Animals Act 1994 (the Act), any dog or cat seized must be given to council immediately and it is an offence not to do so”.

however, council’s procedure [as outlined in the letter to Mr Miles] is that council be notified in the first instance of any animal seized and preferably be the point of drop off. Council officers then manage the process, with the goal of returning the animal to its home.”
Maribyrnong council’s website directs people with a stray animal to contact its officers for collection or “you can take the animal to The Lost Dogs Home in North Melbourne, which works with council to reunite animals with their owners or rehome them.”

Mr Miles said he was absolutely not breaking the law and the suggestion was absurd. “They’ve sent a letter to me, and also The Lost Dogs Home, which is really bullying and threatening saying that basically they want the animals delivered to the Hobsons Bay civic centre and not The Lost Dogs Home, despite them utilising The Lost Dogs Home as a service provider under 84Y of the act,” he said. “The civic centre is designed for paying bills not for dumped, neglected animals to be taken in and processed. “The legislation clearly states that any person who seizes an animal must as soon as reasonably possible deliver it to an authorised officer of that council ‘or to a person or body which has an agreement under section 84Y with that council’. “The Lost Dogs Home has a service agreement with the council, therefore, it is completely legal to drop it [an animal] there.” The Lost Dogs Home animal welfare general manager Dr David Cunliffe said it was not an offence for a stray cat from Hobsons Bay to be brought in. “The Lost Dogs Home won’t refuse to accept or care for stray animals found in the Hobsons Bay area, but is required to secure an address where the animal was collected,” he said. “The right process is for a person to notify the council first. Altona Beach renourishment – sand deliveries
Williamstown Botanic Gardens Master Plan
Council has begun its beach renourishment project at Altona Beach, between Sarros and Maidstone Streets. An expected four trucks per hour will deliver approximately 27,000 tonnes of freshly quarried sand to the foreshore. Works are scheduled for completion in July 2018. Road closures will not be required, however both traffic and pedestrian management will be in place on the Esplanade to enable trucks to safely deliver the sand on the beach. Floodlighting - Duane Reserve Brooklyn
Two new floodlight towers will be installed on the west side of Duane Reserve Brooklyn, parallel to the existing two towers on the east side of the reserve. As part of the upgrade, the new lights will be fitted with external shielding to control the lighting. In addition, the light located on the west side will be relocated to comply with lighting requirements. Works are expected to start by the end of April and will take approximately 12 weeks to complete.

Council has developed a master plan, in collaboration with the Williamstown Botanic Gardens Advisory Group, the Friends of Williamstown Botanic Gardens and Heritage Victoria, to guide the development of the gardens in future years. The master plan is on public exhibition until 11 May for the community to have its say on the latest plans for the gardens, which aim to enhance the already strong character of the gardens by improving planting, introducing new garden beds, upgrading the presentation to the surrounding streets and updating the existing irrigation system. The Williamstown Botanic Gardens are one of the oldest botanical gardens in Victoria and are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. MacLean Reserve path upgrade
Work on upgrading the paths in MacLean Reserve on Cole Street in Williamstown has started. The work involves upgrading the pathway to a 2m wide concrete path for 145m. Tree maintenance works also took place on the reserve including deadwood removal and pruning overhanging branches.
Williamstown Mechanics Institute restoration
The first stage of restoration works at the Williamstown Mechanics Institute will begin shortly. In order to structurally stabilise the building the first stage of works will be the underpinning of the timber cottage, with the underpinning of the main building scheduled for the second half of the year. Carinza Reserve footpath improvements
Council will be improving the footpaths at Carinza Reserve, Seabrook to incorporate the reserve into the Skeleton Creek shared trail network. The works are anticipated to start in late April and will take about four weeks to complete, weather permitting. The reserve and playground may be temporarily closed during the works.

Day care centre shut down By Benjamin Millar A Footscray family day care service is among the latest to be shut down over a series of alleged rorts involving taxpayer money. Altona Meadows Family Day Care, operating in Footscray, has had its licence cancelled for failing to comply with a range of conditions. The centre, operating on Nicholson Street, was found to have obtained unentitled payments, charged more than the appropriate rates and failed to provide reports on its activities.
The breaches have been revealed by the federal Department of Education and Training on its Child Care Enforcement Action Register, and reveal a list of services that have been the subject of a sanction, suspension or closure. The list was first made public in January and is updated each quarter. It reveals a number of other inner-west centres have also fallen foul of their obligations and been suspended or closed as a result. Early Childhood Learning Family Day Care and Safeway Family Day Care – both also in Footscray – were closed last year due to
allegations of fraud, making a false statement or document and failing to provide reports. Aussom Family Day Care Scheme in Footscray was suspended for failing to comply with state or commonwealth laws. Braybrook-based Haange Family Day Care was closed for “remitting amounts that cannot be passed on” and failing to provide reports. Victoria remains a hot-spot for family day care providers that have been subjected to serious sanctions, accounting for 27 of the 53 services across the country to land in trouble in the past three months.

The Slow Fish Festival is coming to Spotswood, hosted by Slow Food Melbourne – part of an eco-gastronomy movement interested in the politics of food founded in Italy in 1986. President Alison Peake said the movement started from some left-wing journalists protesting against the opening of Italy’s first McDonald’s. “They sat on the Spanish Steps in Rome and ate bowls of pasta in protest,” she said. “They could see how the whole commodification of fast food was going to destroy a lot of food traditions. A dramatic reshaping of federal electorate boundaries has been flagged for Melbourne’s inner-west in the wake of the area’s dramatic recent growth. The Australian Electoral Commission has revealed a proposed redistribution that moves almost 30 per cent of current voters in Gellibrand into Bill Shorten’s Maribyrnong seat or a new seat to be called Fraser. The new electorate, named after former Liberal prime minister Malcolm Fraser, will be centred around Sunshine. Gellibrand, a safe Labor seat held by Tim Watts, would lose a large part of Footscray, West Footscray and Maidstone and pick up Laverton and Point Cook. The redistribution would transfer an estimated 32,115 of Gellibrand’s 111,084 projected voters. The Australian Electoral Commission also proposes to change the name of four electorates, but has stopped short of adopting the suggested name change of Gellibrand to Cooper, for indigenous activist and leader William Cooper. Mr Watts said that despite significant community support for Gellibrand to be renamed Cooper, the AEC redistribution committee had chosen not to propose name changes for the area at this time. “I am naturally disappointed but hopeful that the AEC will revisit this issue in the future,” he said. Electoral commissioner Tom Rogers said the Victorian redistribution was required to enable an increase from 37 to 38 federal electoral divisions. Ladybugs shine for girls By Goya Dmytryshchak Rose, age 9, wants to be an author when she grows up. An avid reader, she has finished all but one of the Treehouse books by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton. “I wonder when Andy and Terry will ever stop writing and drawing books – they are going to have to stop it soon or otherwise the treehouse will fall down,” she says. Her father, Newport firefighter Paul Albietz, is raising awareness for girls who are often diagnosed with autism later than boys and miss out on early support.

“With Rose, she wasn’t hitting any milestones, it was always something unusual,” he said. “We started doing early intervention when she was two and a half – but we didn’t know what we were doing it for. “We never really had a diagnosis until she was just starting school. “The earlier you can do the intervention, the better the outcome is for the life of the person. “Often [for girls] they pick it up later on and there’s always missed opportunities for intervention, and support for the family as well.” Rose chimes in with a maturity beyond her years. “In the old days, people with autism didn’t even know they had it,” she said. women with autism and involving them and their representative organisations in policy and decision-making. Rose is one of the first members of a volunteer group called Yellow Ladybugs, which supports girls and women with autism. “We were going to all these things where
there were just boys everywhere, we never really saw girls on the spectrum until we joined the Yellow Ladybugs,” Mr Albietz said. “They’ve got a couple of adult females who have been diagnosed on the spectrum, as ambassadors … it’s good to see examples of other people.”

Warehouse plan scaled back The developer behind a major warehouse development in West Footscray has reached a compromise on the project with residents. Star Weekly last year reported that an application for a planning permit for the Indwe Street project drew 90 objections from neighbouring residents. While a council report was in favour of approval, councillors voted it down on a number of grounds. The decision was challenged at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal where residents and proponents held discussions on compromises. Maribyrnong council is backing a mediated outcome conditionally agreed to by all parties at a VCAT compulsory conference. The $26 million development of a vacant site at 25-27 Indwe Street initially proposed 177 warehouses, offices, a childcare centre and restricted retail. The 72,400 square metre site is zoned industrial, but bordered on two sides by residents and a third side by Stony Creek. The application was refused on six grounds and mediation was held at VCAT on March 16. The applicant and objectors have agreed to a reduced number of units, increased car parking, no childcare centre and more open space. The developer will also direct a $50,000 contribution towards the Stony Creek Directions Plan. Benjamin Millar

CCTV to nab arsonist By Goya Dmytryshchak Security cameras will be installed at an Altona Meadows reserve to stop a series of deliberate fires at the site of a giant flower sculpture. Numerous fires have occurred at the public open space on the corner of Queen and Merton streets and several locals have reported a suspected arsonist. The corner site contains an eight-metre steel sculpture called Grow Grow, installed in 2011 at a cost of $150,000 to Hobsons Bay ratepayers, including $94,000 for landscaping. The site has a memorial park bench
dedicated to Altona Meadows teenager Allem Halkic, who died by suicide in 2009 after being cyber-bullied. Hobsons Bay councillor Colleen Gates said council mobile CCTV, which is rotated around vandalism and rubbish dumping hot-spots, would be installed at the site. “I’ve heard anecdotal comments from other people in Altona Meadows that it’s probably one person,” she said. “Someone who’s lighting fires like that, regardless of whether it’s in that reserve or other locations … they’ve clearly got no regard for the safety of other residents, their own
neighbours and people who live in those areas. If they persist, they will be caught.” Cr Gates said there had also been fires along Queen and Orville streets in a series of blazes that started in October. Police are investigating. Toorak price tag in Willy Williamstown’s reputation as the “Toorak of the west” was given a shot in the arm at the weekend as a dated weatherboard home climbed $220,000 above reserve to sell at auction for $3.02 million. The sale of the three-bedroom Victorian house at 218 Osborne Street with a time-capsule kitchen and an abundance of old-style wallpaper drew a crowd of 150 and brought Saturday’s highest-priced reported auction result. The heritage-overlay protected property grabbed the attention of two keen families because of its large block – 1012 square metres – and position in the coveted South Williamstown precinct, 400 metres from the beach. Williams Real Estate director Michael Harvey said the house was virtually original and would need substantial money spent on it.
The property, quoted at $2.7 million to $2.8 million, was on the market at $2.8 million. “Osborne Street is a very prestigious street – it is only one back from the water and has the Williamstown Botanic Gardens on it as well,” Mr Harvey noted. He said the new owner was a family from the western suburbs which plans to renovate and extend. Williamstown leads the pack when it comes to expensive sales in the west. The suburb has a median house price of $1.351 million, which is well up on its median of $854,000 five years ago, according to Domain Group data. Festival extends reach A modern-day film noir comedy-thriller will make its big screen debut this month as the first ever full-length movie to screen as part of the Setting Sun Film Festival. Entering its fifth year, the five-day festival at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre will feature more than 80 films across categories including animation, documentary, drama and comedy. The opening night screening of finalists and winners, followed by an award presentation, will be held on Thursday, April 26. On Friday, feature-length film Trench will make its world premiere. Trench, described as girl-powered comedy/ film noir set in modern-day Melbourne, was created on a tiny budget by Paul Nelson and Perri Cummings of Cinema Viscera.

Nelson said it was exciting to have the film make its debut as part of the festival and fitting it would be at the Sun Theatre, which opened just before film noir became so popular. While Nelson and Cummings had enjoyed making their earlier short films together, Nelson said they were excited to see their full-length feature come to fruition. Cummings said Trench followed the traditional film noir pattern. “There are a few twists along the way – it goes from a light comedy story to a thriller,” she said. Shake-up for arts festival
By Goya Dmytryshchak On Valentine’s Day in 1917, a shell exploded in front of Sergeant Albert Hyde and a locket from his fiancee probably saved his life. His story is among those featured in the Local Heroes military exhibition curated by the Altona Laverton Historical Society and on display at Altona Homestead. Albert Hyde fought at many battles including Gallipoli and later at Flers where he was wounded by a shell. As a young boy, Glen Hyde remembers being able to feel pieces of shrapnel in his father’s body. “He had 26 pieces of shrapnel in his body and a broken leg, but what possibly saved his life was the locket that was hit by a piece of shrapnel around his neck,” Mr Hyde said. He said his father had been wearing a locket on a chain around his neck from his fiancee Irene Newland, inscribed “Irene to Bert”. Albert would return to marry Irene, whose four brothers have an incredible story of their own. Of the four Newland brothers from Laverton, one was killed in action while another was awarded the Victoria Cross. Glen, his son and grandson – the latter whom is currently preparing for Afghanistan – are also featured in the exhibition. Organiser Maureen Lane said the exhibition contained memorabilia from the Boer War to Afghanistan. “It really brings home that it was not an exciting, wonderful thing like a lot of the movies show,” she said. “It was a horrendous thing. “The people who are serving now in Afghanistan, and all those who went to Vietnam and any of the other wars that we’ve

had, have all been as valuable in their service as the people who were at Gallipoli. “Some weren’t treated well … and I want them to know that they are just as important to our history … as any other person who served.”

The exhibition includes information for quilters and sewers who would like to make quilts and laundry bags for Australians currently serving in Afghanistan. The historical society is seeking the names of people from Altona and Laverton who served in any war for inclusion on a database. The exhibition runs until the end of June at Altona Homestead, 128 Queen Street, Altona.

The inner-west will once again have its own biennial arts festival, filling the void left by the collapse of the Big West Festival. The Due West: Immersive Arts Festival will be held every two years after Maribyrnong council committed to provide $85,000 a year, backed by a further $110,000 from the state government via Creative Victoria. A report to the council noted that Creative Victoria had made its support conditional on a biennial rather than annual delivery, allowing for a “creative” year between each presentation year. “Creative Victoria strongly believe artist-based festivals require a creative year to deliver high quality artist-based work and audience engagement,” the report stated. Creative Victoria wants the festival to run in the alternate year with Hobsons Bay council’s biennial Art and Industry Festival, ensuring “ongoing sustainable arts festival programming”. The inaugural Due West: Immersive Arts Festival took place last August in the wake of the surprise demise of the 20-year-old Big West Festival, bringing together almost 300 artists and attracting 10,000 audience members. The three-week festival will be tightened into a 10-day festival and moved to November, being held around a central hub with a handful of satellite events. Benjamin Millar

A Newport resident inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women will champion opportunities for western suburbs young people. Dr Maria Dudycz, who is of Ukrainian-Italian descent, left school in year 11. Her English teacher at Footscray High School, Rosetta Manaszewicz, encouraged her to complete year 12, which she did over two years at night school while working full-time. Dr Dudycz went on to study law and medicine, eventually becoming a senior member of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. She was instrumental in developing the Disability Act 2006, which aims to preserve the rights of people with disabilities, particularly in relation to the use of chemical restraints. She also instituted legal reforms relating to the sterilisation of women with disabilities. The mother-of-three, a former state president of the Australasian College of Medicine and an inaugural director of the National Breast Cancer Centre, said a chance meeting at Bunnings inspired her to create opportunities for young people in the west. “I met a young boy … he was struggling to find work experience as a doctor,” Dr Dudycz said. “When I went through the process over nearly two months of trying to find him a placement, I thought, ‘Oh my God, is this what these kids are facing’. “I thought, ‘This is so inequitable’, so I’m actually trying to set up a network where I use all my networks to get these children work experience. “I remember being that starry-eyed kid and not believing that in the western suburbs of Melbourne I could ever become a doctor – and that was also one of the reasons I left school.”

What’s your connection with Footscray? I’ve been in the shop here for 46 years. I started out repairing sewing machines after leaving school at 19 to help my parents. We were migrants and I wanted to get a job as quickly as possible. It was my first job and I’m still here doing the work. We had a house in Yarraville at first, which was very good. My parents eventually sold it and bought a block of land and built a house in Altona. What was Footscray like in those days? Here in Footscray it was one of the most popular places for migrants to go. All the migrants all started to congregate in Footscray. They would come in to the movies, the theatres – there were a lot of happy days. You wouldn’t believe the difference, but everything has to move along. How did you get into repairing sewing machines? When I left school I was 19 and I just wanted any job I could get into to help my parents. I looked in all the newspapers and there was a Jewish guy who wanted an apprentice. I learnt all about sewing machines, domestic and industrial. He could speak Italian. All the migrants were buying sewing machines. They were all hard workers and they would work in the factories and save up … buying a house was a priority. I’m 72 now and I have been doing it all that time. How is the work these days? Now it’s turned around and we are getting a lot of young ladies and men who are doing tailoring and fashion and design. There are so many different sewing machines, you wouldn’t
believe it. There are a lot of women who do their own alterations or start up little shops and do clothing.

I won two gold medals at the Commonweath Games – at the Edinburgh Games in 1970 and in Christchurch in 1974.

FRYING CHOCOLATE – IT’S A THING Regular readers of this column may recall I have a strange tradition over Easter. I don’t just eat Cadbury Crème Easter eggs – I deep fry them. My friend and fellow chocoholic Maria and I have enjoyed this annual event several years in a row now (Nigella Lawson and her deep-fried battered Bounty bars have a lot to answer for!). Each year we batter and deep fry a range of chocolate treats – fun size Mars Bars, Crunchies, you name it – as part of our mission to discover deep fried chocolate perfection!

As I write this column today, Maria and I have just completed our 2018 Easter fry up, with Lindt dark chocolate and coconut cream bars added to the mix this year. I know, I know – your arteries are probably hardening at the very thought, but remember – this is just a once-a-year thing. Everything in moderation! Just be super careful if you intend to try this at home – you’ve got to be on the ball when you’re deep frying with hot oil. If you’re unsure, have a look online at Nigella’s deep fried Bounty bars with pineapple. They’re really over the top, but the fresh zing of the pineapple cuts through the sweetness of the chocolate and coconut, making for heavenly – albeit shockingly rich – dessert.
FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? AC: I would probably go for deep fried eggplant and Chinese broccoli. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? AC: If I am to be completely honest, I hardly get a chance to watch TV and even though this isn’t a real cooking show, I love Come Dine With Me. It makes laugh! So I guess my favourite TV food person is the voiceover guy in that show because he calls them out on their lies! In the women’s premier league, Altona is licking its wounds after a 4-1 defeat at the sticks of Essendon at Grant Reserve. Phoebe Rothfield was the lone goalscorer for the A’s in a disappointing season opener. The A’s will be looking to bounce back against Waverley, also a first-up loser. Footscray’s women’s team made it a double delight for the club on the day. The Bulldogs crushed Toorak East Malvern 5-2 with Monica Singh leading the way with three goals. Jets break their drought By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets have broken into the TAC Cup girls winners’ circle for the first time. The Jets, featuring in their second season in the competition, broke a streak of nine consecutive losses with a thrilling five-point win over Eastern Ranges at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday. “They’ve been working really hard towards that first win,” Jets female talent co-ordinator Claudia Davey said of the team. “Each week, they’ve been improving little bit by little bit and finally it paid off today getting the win. “They were all very excited and deserved the reward for all their hard work and all the coaches who have been working very hard as well.” There was nothing to separate the two sides nearly the whole game. Scores were level at quarter-time, half-time and three-quarter time before the Jets claimed the points with a two-goal-to-one final term. “It was pretty much goal for goal for most of the game,” Davey said. “It turned into a very exciting last quarter.” The difference in the game was Western Jets sharpshooter Caitlin Greiser. Greiser kicked four goals straight to give the Jets the potency they needed in attack. The Australian Rules convert is one of the form forwards in the competition with seven goals in her past two matches. Last year, Greiser was also scoring plenty of goals, but more so on a soccer field. “This is her first season of football, but she has that background in elite sport, so she’s a great influence on the other girls as well with her bit of extra maturity,” Davey said. “She works very hard and is really passionate about her football and wants to do well. “She’s played a bit of everything this season – ruck, back line and forward line – she’s quite tall and can read the game really well. “With her goalkicking the past couple of the weeks, the forward line looks to be a good place for her.” Elisabeth Georgostathis was hugely influential for the Western Jets. Georgostathis is constantly in the frame and uses her quickness to bound away from the packs. “She’s been playing very well,” Davey said. “Her work rate is incredible every game. “She stands out as an exceptional runner on our team. Her run and carry is important.” Isabelle Pritchard is one of the youngest members of the Western Jets at just 16, but has been super impressive. Pritchard’s calmness and composure are a feature for the bottom-age player. “I was saying to the coaches today, I don’t

Shane has spent nearly 30 years with AFL Victoria and has had an enormous influence on football in the west at the under-age level. The Jets’ program has had its critics, me included, over the years and Shane has certainly had strong opinions about the success and direction of the program. It is a very difficult job, as the under-age program is a very emotive area dealing with young men and women and their futures. I commend Shane for his dedication and patience, and wish him well in his retirement.

Football Club finally gets the chance to show off the bright new $11.75 million Avalon Airport Oval this Saturday night. The vision of the club’s board a decade ago and years of hard work by many people will be rewarded when a Werribee team exits the new changerooms and takes to the oval. The past few weeks in particular have been challenging for the staff, as have the past 18 months overall. The club started the season with a nail-biting loss to Geelong at Torquay on Easter Sunday. It was a gutsy effort in its first game as a non-aligned AFL club for nearly 20 years.

role of club boards is often talked about only when a crisis strikes – and then it is usually in a derogatory manner. Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon is a good case in point. In the aftermath of the premiership win in 2016, he could do no wrong in the eyes of red, white and blue followers. Had he walked on water, no one wearing a Bulldogs’ premiership cap or T-shirt would have been surprised. Lately, though, he has been pilloried on social media as an aloof, egomaniacal control freak. That, incidentally, is not the Peter Gordon I know. People who give their time to boards are on a hiding to nothing. It is time the rank and file stepped back and appreciated the time given and the calibre of people involved. And remember they do it for $0,000,000. Their payment is the success of the club on and off the field, just as it is for you and me.

Altona has gone down 4-3 to Essendon in a thrilling Hockey Victoria men’s premier league season opener at Grant Reserve on Saturday. Matthew Barnett, Matthew Huf and Andrew Scanlon all got on the scoresheet for the Seagulls, but it was not enough as Essendon out-gunned them on the day. Roosters upbeat despite thumping Altona Roosters have endured a tough start to the new NRL Victoria first-grade season. A new-look Roosters squad was dealt a heavy 60-16 defeat at the hands of Werribee Bears, the reigning champions, at Bruce Comben Reserve on Saturday. While the scoreboard was ugly, Roosters coach Damien Riki was not disheartened. “It’s our first hit-out together,” he said. “We’ve got half the team back from last year and the other half is new. We’ll pick ourselves up and move forward again … we’re going to improve in the next four or five weeks.”
Altona was competitive in patches and even on top at times, with Riki pleased with the way his charges fought out the game. The last 15 minutes could be a momentum builder for their round-two clash with newly promoted Truganina Rabbitohs. “For them to keep themselves in the game and come back the way they did late in the second half was pleasing,” Riki said. CYs will host Westbourne Grammarians, the other western suburbs team in the league, at Crofts Reserve on Saturday morning. Western Jets have ground out an ugly 31-point win over Eastern Ranges to make it two wins out of three in TAC Cup. The Jets left it late to create separation on the scoreboard, kicking five goals to one in the last quarter for a runaway win at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday. Jets coach Torin Baker admitted that his team was far from its best for large chunks of the game. “It certainly wasn’t a great spectacle today, even if it was some of the better conditions I’ve ever seen down at Williamstown,” he said. “The first half was pretty ordinary, to be honest, and even the third quarter we missed a lot of opportunities.” The Jets’ skill level was generally down, with midfielder Zak Butters an exception. Butters’ clean ball use was important to the Jets breaking free. “He was one who executed on the day when others were making mistakes around him,” Baker said. Connor Thar also had a big impact for the Jets. Like Butters, Thar did most of his damage in the midfield, but also rested forward to good effect. “They’re two boys who have played a lot of TAC Cup footy and are both in our leadership group, so it’s really good to see them playing the footy that they are,” Baker said. Xavier O’Halloran was challenged by the coaches at half-time and responded. The Jets’ captain had a greater impact in the second half, along with Stefan Radovanovic, Hamish Murphy, Jaden Rice and Tom Warner. Steve Kyriazis was dangerous in attack with two goals, making it six majors from his past two games. “Steve’s just a really crafty mid-sized forward,” Baker said. “He plays taller than his height, he’s very good overhead and he’s a nice kick.” The TAC Cup will have this weekend off due to a Vic Metro trial game. Butters, Murphy, Radovanovic, O’Halloran, Emerson Jeka, Daly Andrews and Aaron Clarke will feature in that game as they stake a claim for a spot in Vic Metro’s squad for the under-18 national championships.

Altona Magic is a point off the pace in National Premier League 2 west after a 2-1 win over Ballarat City at Paisley Park on Saturday night. The Magic took the lead through Ben Litfin in the 68th minute, but that was cancelled out by a goal from City’s Chudiar Tharjiath seven minutes later. Magic found its match-winner in the 83rd minute through youngster David Trajanoski, who has scored in each of his two first team appearances this season. In state league 1, Altona City fought out a 0-0 draw in a tough away date with Preston Lions. Yarraville Glory was beaten 4-0 by Geelong. Deer Park will once again start a Western Region Football League division 1 season as the defending premiers. The Lions will be gunning for a record-breaking sixth consecutive premiership when their campaign begins against Altona Vikings with the unfurling of their latest flag at John McLeod Oval this Saturday. Lions coach Marc Bullen said his team was eyeing off a slice of Victorian metropolitan football history. “If we achieve a premiership this year, we’ll go down as the most successful club in suburban football history,” Bullen said. “I’ve been told that no senior team has had six premierships in a row in metropolitan football.
“Essendon Tullamarine won five in a row and six has happened in country football, but never in metropolitan football.” Deer Park is not getting ahead of itself. While Bullen has assembled a team where “our internal competition is at the highest stage it’s ever been in my time at the club”, he knows there are more clubs then ever before wanting to knock them off their perch. “Every year it gets harder,” he said. “There’s a lot of clubs that have certainly improved their lists. “We think we’ve got a great stable list and we’ve added some players into that which we think can only complement what we’re trying to achieve and some young kids coming through.
“The goal is obviously to play finals, get to the big dance again. We saw how close it was last year and I can’t see things changing.” The season-opening clash between Deer Park and Altona will see two of the star forwards in the competition on show at either end in Deer Park’s Jase Perkins and Altona recruit Patrick Rose. It will also be a hot battle in the midfield, an area of the ground in which the Lions have bolstered with the inclusion of Dyson Stevens, Jason Williams and Paul Bower.
