City rings in tree change By Benjamin Millar Significant trees across Maribyrnong will soon receive greater protection under a new register that will list and help retain the area’s most important trees. The register has been created in response to last year’s destruction of a giant oak tree, estimated to be more than 120 years old, on a Footscray block owned by a property developer. The tree was attacked with chainsaws and then cut down while the state planning minister was still determining an urgent request for interim protection.

A draft policy for a significant tree register, due to be presented to last night’s council meeting, also flagged a move to seek public nominations of significant trees for inclusion. An officer’s report in support of the policy stated that protecting significant trees is an important part of safeguarding a city’s natural and cultural heritage. It notes that ongoing growth and development make it timely to investigate ways to protect significant trees in Maribyrnong. “Trees can be significant for a number of reasons, including scientific, social, historical, environmental or aesthetic significance,” the report stated.

It said adopting a register through the Maribyrnong Planning Scheme will provide a high level of protection for significant trees by triggering a need for a planning permit for their removal or nearby building work. Residents will be encouraged to nominate trees, which will then be assessed by an independent arborist. The criteria used to assess a tree’s significance will be based on the National Trust’s Significant Tree Register. While a Maribyrnong register has been welcomed, pressure remains on the council to further beef up protection rules and be more pro-active in identifying trees for protection.

National Trust advocacy manager Felicity Watson said it was a positive to see community engagement encouraged, yet relying on residents alone to identify trees for inclusion on the register would lead to gaps in protection. “The National Trust would like to see Maribyrnong council go a step further, and engage an arborist to do a comprehensive independent review of trees across the municipality, similar to that undertaken by neighbouring Moonee Valley,” she said. The trust would also like to see rules that require a permit to remove trees with a certain circumference or greater while the register is being developed.

Edgewater project drags on By Benjamin Millar

The long-running saga over the abandoned Club Edgewater project has taken a new twist as the land owner looks to offload the site. A half-built shell has been sitting at 31 Edgewater Boulevard in Maribyrnong since Western Bulldogs walked away from the $30 million poker machine and entertainment precinct project in 2015 over differences with the site’s owner and developer, Prizac. Prizac has since been working with family-run hotel group Adara on plans for a 10-storey development on the site, containing a hotel, apartments, shops and a gym. A scaled-back, eight-storey complex with 72 hotel rooms and 90 apartments was approved by Maribyrnong council late last year. But despite the permit being approved, Prizac is now looking to exit the project and a campaign by property agents Knight Frank is under way for the 5078 square-metre site. Agent Danny Clark said there was still an agreement for a lease with Adara, which a new owner may wish to maintain, but there is also the option of demolishing the shell and restarting with a new proposal. Mr Clark said there has been keen interest in the site and the next step would be negotiating with interested parties. Expressions of interest close at 4pm Thursday, April 12.

Williamstown is about to be in a spin when it hosts the Melbourne Latin Festival for the first time this Easter weekend. The 10th annual festival features some of the biggest names in dance, including world salsa champions Ricardo Vega and Karen Forcano from Chile and Argentina, respectively. Festival founder Natalie Montano said more than 150 performers and crowds of 1500 were expected to attend nightly performances at Williamstown Town Hall over the three-day event kicking off Friday. “With past classes including sensual bachata and reggaeton, the festival is always so much fun and has a great social scene behind it,” she said. “Now’s your chance to discover the difference between tango, bachata, samba and zouk.” Yarraville’s Nathan Thorneycroft and Brooke Gittings are expected to sizzle at the event. The couple led Australian champion teams at last year’s World Salsa Solo and Australian Latin Dance Cup. There will be 12 DJs over three nights and a live Latin band on the Saturday night. By Goya Dmtryshchak A suspicious fire ripped through a block of units in Altona on Saturday, destroying two apartments. Firefighters arrived at the McBain Street units about 10.30pm – just four minutes after they were called – following reports that people may be trapped inside. Two of the units in the block of four were gutted and have been declared structurally unsound, while a third has been damaged. Gerry Carton was out watching footy with

son Garry when a friend drove past his home and saw the building on fire. They rushed back to get Mr Carton’s dog. Mr Carton said there were often problems at the units and as recently as Thursday he found someone sleeping in a doorway. “There was a firebombing a couple of years ago outside No. 2’s garage,” he said. MFB Commander Roger Chitty on Sunday morning said the female occupant of the unit where the blaze started had not been located. However, he said no one had been inside at the time of the fire.

“At this stage we haven’t been able to obtain a cause of the fire, but we are making it a suspicious fire,” he said. “There were reports of missing people so we did an extensive search while the firefighting was being conducted, but we haven’t found anyone at the scene.” He said the prompt response of firefighters had saved neighbouring houses. And there was another silver lining. “We had reports of a dog that was inside and trapped,” Commander Chitty said. “Fortunately, we did find the dog well and alive and he’s now with the owner and happy.”

School tunes in for Harmony Day Yarraville Special Developmental School students have celebrated the area’s rich cultural diversity with an action-packed Harmony Day. Visitors from Warringa Park School put on a drumming demonstration, cultural dance was held in the school hall and local musician Razz Mussen hosted music classes. An Aboriginal-inspired artwork station was set up in the visual arts room, while senior students dished up some tasty treats. Leading teacher Kelly Botha said the students had been looking forward to the day as a chance to celebrate belonging. Ms Botha said getting people creatively involved was a great way to help with understanding and inclusion. “Last year we celebrated by wearing orange but this year we wanted to work on these ideas in the lead-up to Harmony Day.” Benjamin Millar

Statue’s theft ‘disgraceful’ The artist who created a statue stolen from a Laverton park has described the theft as “an attack on the community”. Dean Bowen’s 1.2 metre-high statue (pictured) – titled Walking Figure and part of a set of three called Linking Laverton – was cut off at its feet from the stone base at the Thomas Street entry to McCormack Park. Police say the heavy statue would have required tools and a trailer or ute to remove. Bowen said the stolen piece, which represented sustainable transport, was likely stolen for the value of the bronze metal. “It’s a pretty bad feeling,” he said. “It’s been there eight years without anything and now someone’s done this. It’s just disgraceful. It’s kind of like an attack on the community. It’s like stealing something that belongs to everybody.” Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair described the theft as “very disheartening”. “If anyone saw anything suspicious or knows anything we ask you to please contact the police,” she said. Robber faces deportation An ice-affected man involved in a home invasion and carjacking at Newport is likely to be deported to Iraq after serving his sentence. Mazin Putrus, 28, was sentenced in the County Court to five years and two months jail, with a minimum of three years and 10 months for his part in the 2016 armed robbery and other offences. He and two men who were carrying firearms

had arrived in two cars at a house in Newport in the middle of the afternoon, the court heard. The owner saw them on CCTV and barricaded himself in his bedroom. As the trio was trying to gain entry, the owner’s friend pulled into the driveway. Putrus took the car and he and his co-offenders used the driver as leverage to try to gain entry to the house, eventually giving up with police on the way. The court heard Putrus had been on bail at

the time for an aggravated burglary and had been before the courts five times before the Newport crime. He had also been part of a riot at the Metropolitan Remand Centre. His family, as Christians and part of a persecuted minority, had fled Iraq to Syria when Putrus was 14 and arrived in Australia on humanitarian visas in 2009. Judge Susan Cohen said Putrus’s visa had been cancelled and he was “most likely” to be deported upon release from prison.

Time to discover hidden gems People can discover one of Hobsons Bay’s hidden gems on a guided walk which takes in eight monolithic sculptures along Kororoit Creek at Altona North. The walk along Toyota Way, part of the Kororoit Creek Trail, is an initiative of Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair. It features giant sculptures funded by Toyota and created by renowned Brooklyn artist Geoffrey Ricardo, titled Spirits of Time and Place. Ricardo will be answering questions on the day. The walk also showcases the work of Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek, which has created an urban forest by planting 50,000 trees and shrubs since its inception in 2001. Qenos Altona Maintenance Activities –

Works target cyclist safety Cyclists commuting between Footscray and the city are set to enjoy a safer journey once a $3.4 million safety upgrade along Dynon Road is complete. The state government has announced a construction blitz to build separated bicycle paths across the Maribyrnong River and along a key stretch of Dynon Road, as well as a range of improvements to safety around busy intersections. The new two-way cycling path will run along the north side of Dynon Road between Maribyrnong Street and Kensington Road. A shared use path will then extend to Dock Link Road while new signage and line marking will be added along the route. The project will also investigate a new separated bicycle path and footpath along Hopkins Street between Moore Street and Maribyrnong Street, a missing link in the area’s cycling network. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said the improvements will be critical in tackling cycling accidents along one of Victoria’s most significant cycling corridors. “Pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from these important connections in the growing inner west,” she said. “These upgrades will give cyclists safer, separated paths so they don’t have to share the road with trucks and traffic.” The works are being funded from the $100 million Safer Cyclists and Pedestrians Fund. Festival forced to move By Benjamin Millar An explosion of multi-storey apartments and the construction of the West Gate Tunnel tollway project are forcing organisers of St Jerome’s Laneway Festival to abandon their home of nearly a decade. The Melbourne leg of the popular annual music festival has been held on the banks of the Maribyrnong River since moving from the CBD to Footscray in 2010. The number of

new residential apartments has skyrocketed since then and free tickets valued at more than $100,000 now go to about 700 residents. Further high density residential projects are imminent and new West Gate Tunnel ramps are slated to loom over the site of the main stage, putting pressure on a festival footprint that has a cap of just 15,000 tickets sold compared to 20,000 in other states. But the festival’s future appears to be secure after Maribyrnong councillors last week ticked

off a plan to move the festival to the more spacious Footscray Park. Festival organisers are also planning an extra new “boutique music festival” in partnership with the Footscray Community Arts Centre. A Western Distributor Authority spokeswoman said the West Gate Tunnel Project’s new ramps will run over a wharf area not open to the public, so the alignment should not be impacting on the current Laneway Festival site.

Cyclist honours cancer victims A Kingsville man is on the ride of a lifetime as he cycles across Australia to raise money to help the fight against cancer. Ryan Vecht set off on his bike from Perth on March 17, the first day of a gruelling 5500-kilometre unsupported solo ride across Australia that will finish in Sydney. Vecht was selected to ride in this year’s 2018 Indian Pacific Wheel Race, and is one of about 50 riders completing the journey despite the event’s cancellation, awaiting a coronial inquest into the death of British cyclist Mike Hall in last year’s ride. Vecht said thinking of the funds he was raising for the McGrath Foundation, which helps breast cancer patients and their families, is helping him fight through pain and exhaustion as he rides up to 430 kilometres a day. Developer loses appeal Questions remain after an Altona developer selling apartments off the plan lost his appeal for an extension of time to start building. George Gabriel appealed to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal for an eighth extension of time to start building seven dwellings and a coffee shop at 114 Civic Parade. The tribunal heard Mr Gabriel was first issued a planning permit in 2007 and had already received seven extensions. VCAT member Megan Carew said the council refused Mr Gabriel’s latest request because it believed there was “evidence of warehousing over the past 10 years”. Mr Gabriel informed the tribunal he had appointed real estate agents for pre-sale in January 2017 with the pre-sale of unit 1 in May 2017. Ms Carew said there was a question of whether the proposal was at a point where it was “ready to go”. “I am not persuaded on the material and evidence before me that the applicant is ready to commence construction within the one year extension.” The council said if a fresh planning application for the development was made today, it would be prohibited because of changes to the planning scheme made in March 2017. I’m very much a fan of more traditional fare and spending a day poring over a meal to get the best out of the ingredients is something I enjoy immensely. FB: What is your signature dish? WN: Anchovy, garlic and rosemary slow-cooked roast lamb with all the traditional, home-style trimmings. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? WN: A medium-rare rib-eye steak with duck fat roast potatoes, garlic butter brussels sprouts and whatever else will fit on the plate. Usually, being in charge of the proteins means I love a good steak when I do not have to cook it!

I always wanted to be a contestant, but a dessert challenge would cause me to curl up into the foetal position under my bench and drink the cooking wine! FB: What is your favourite food? WN: I love proteins of all types. The slower-cooked the better!

Every so often, my hubby does a market run. He loads up on insulated carry bags, drives into town and hits Queen Vic Market like a man on a mission, stocking up on some of our favourites … namely prawns, salmon, chops and steak. On his latest market mission, he found himself distracted by a display of beef brisket. “It just jumped out at me!” he says in the same way he talks of about Lindt dark chocolate bars with coconut cream he spies at the supermarket. He bought two kilos of the brisket and lugged it home with the rest of his meaty stash. Like this week’s Food Bytes guest Wayne, at our place we love our slow-cooked proteins – and if you’re on a budget, brisket is just about the best cheaper-cut option going around. The meat-to-fat ratio is such that it’s perfect for slow cooking. Using a tried and trusty recipe from the popular Recipe Tin Eats website, I divided the brisket into four portions, marinated in a spice rub and put it in the slow cooker on high for four hours, bubbling away in sauce of apple cider vinegar, tomato sauce, garlic, Worcestershire sauce and spices. That’s minimal preparation for some pretty impressive results. The meat came out soft and tender, with the texture of pulled pork. It’s sticky sweetness was divine when teamed with a generous serve of crunchy coleslaw. It’s the second time I’ve made this recipe and both times it’s been a winner. So if you haven’t tried brisket before, give it a go. You’ll find the recipe for this slow cooker beef brisket with barbecue sauce at recipetineats.com

Heat vegetable oil in same frypan, lightly dust meat in flour and cook in pan until browned on all sides. Remove meat from pan and place on top of vegetables. Return pan to heat and cook wine, stock and tomatoes for a few minutes. Pour over the top of the meat and vegetables. Add the bay leaves and thyme, cover dish with foil or lid and cook in oven for about 1 hour or until meat is very tender, turning the meat half way through. Check the level of the liquid and add more if you need to. Remove from oven and serve.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir uncovers an Italian masterpiece The Harley & Rose dining room has a cosy, almost clubbish, vibe about it. The place appears to have already earned places in the hearts of many, including West Footscrayâ€™s young family demographic. And, yes, there is a kids menu. The Team CTS of four on hand can rise to the occasion of three-hour-plus meals. But mostly weâ€™re very much of the â€œbring us food and make it snappyâ€? school. So we really appreciate the terrific service and the beautifully paced arrival of our various choices. It could be said that Harley & Rose serves mostly orthodox Italian â€“ but that would be misleading. For instead of bolognese or veal scaloppine or minestrone, there are wonderful surprises at almost every turn. We share four starters. Salami ($12), with caper berries on the side, has just the right perfume level of fennel. Our other choices mostly display exactly the same levels of light and right. They include Noix de Jambon with fresh fig ($15) and smoked ocean trout, Grand Marnier and horseradish ($16). Though the crunchy/gooey gorgonzola dolce croquettes with quince ketchup ($9) certainly up the richness factor quite a bit. For mains, for us, two pasta offerings and two pizzas. Spaghetti cacio e pepe ($19) is profoundly simple, sinfully rich perfection â€“ just pasta,

From the short specials line-up, Bennie chooses rigatoni with a sticky tomato sauce including fermented chilli and pancetta ($18). Loves it, he does, though its consumption concludes with a familiar refrain from him: â€œWow â€“ that was bigger than it looked!â€? If anything, perhaps our super dooper pizzas are the real high points of our eating evening. Neapolitan ($20) with sweet pepper, tomato, anchovy, olives and oregano and and house sausage ($22) with pork sausage, fennel, tomato, eggplant and pecorino both exhibit great flavours. Desserts? Oh, yes, weâ€™re definitely in that sort of mood. Tiramisu ($14) is a straight-up top-shelf rendition of a classic. Meringue with pink pepper melon and apple granita ($12) is amazing. The blending of the poached meringue (a bit like a gooey marshmallow) with the cool pink cubes, crunchy granita and the all-important mint equals a taste explosion.

SPORT Clubbers in back-to-back flag triumphs stand. What a time for Sheridan and Tupper to record their top scores for the summer. Earlier in the game, fast bowler Emmett Bronca gave the Clubbers a fighting chance, snaring 7-50 off 25.4 overs. Yarraville Club’s incredible premiership haul continues. The Clubbers have featured in 13 of the past 16 senior division grand finals and this was their ninth premiership in that time. In north west B1, Williamstown CYMS lost its grand final in heartbreaking fashion to Deer Park by 15 runs at Ainsworth Reserve. The CYs needed 168 for victory in the second innings, but fell short to be all out for 153. Shiran Rajakaruna, the standout CYs batsman in the game, backed up with 48 after scoring 94 in the first dig, but to no avail. Tarique Jeffrey (6-60) and Gayan de Silva (7-62

and 10 wickets for the match) gave CYs a chance with their stellar bowling earlier in the game. In Premier Cricket, Footscray fell a hurdle short of the final, going down to Fitzroy Doncaster by six wickets at Schramms Reserve. With the exception of an incredible 82 not out from Dean Russ, the Bulldogs barely fired a shot with the bat, posting 138 in 55.1 overs. The Lions had a couple of early hiccups to be 2-7, but cruised thereafter to book a spot in a third consecutive grand final, in which they will play Dandenong at the Junction Oval. AFLW season has ended with a Bulldogs’ premiership and yet another podium celebration involving a non-playing captain. The controversy surrounding Katie Brennan’s suspension polarised opinion, with the Bulldogs exploring every avenue available to try to get the skipper across the line for the big game. I am no fan of an on-field decision making its way to the courts. A damages claim where personal injury is involved is a different matter, but for me this was tried in the appropriate code arenas and that is where it should end. Whether the offence warranted a suspension is again a totally different matter for discussion. Bulldog captains are not faring well in grand finals of late. In fact, they are not faring at all until after the result.

done to coach Paul Groves, the players and the staff and volunteers who worked so hard and now can bask in the glory of an AFLW premiership. It will not be too long before this grows into a major event on the sporting calendar. The speed of growth of the women’s game is amazing but needs to be harnessed, only to ensure the quality is not compromised because of the lure of the dollar. The money will come in time if the games get better, more skilful and more entertaining. The biggest challenge is the quality of grass roots coaching. When you have someone like Chris Grant involved at a suburban club such as Spotswood then you know the women’s game is going in the right direction.

By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown has achieved the sweetest redemption of all, taking out the 2017-18 Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west group premiership. Twelve months ago, the Seagulls were pondering the one that got away, finishing as minor premiers only to bow out at the semi-final stage. The Seagulls hit the repeat button this summer, filing an impressive home-and-away campaign to qualify for the finals in first place, but this time they were desperate to finish the job. There were times during the finals campaign that a premiership appeared to be slipping away from them. Losing week one of the finals and relinquishing home ground advantage was not ideal, nor was the rain that greeted them on the first day of the two-day grand final. But it all fell into place on Sunday, as the rain went away and the Kew ground staff did a wonderful job of preparing Victoria Park for play. Williamstown got the job done in the big dance, beating Kew by seven wickets. Man-of-the-match Brent McMinn fittingly hit the winning runs. McMinn top-scored with 73 not out off 98 balls as the Gulls chased down Kew’s score of 8-174 to finish with 3-178. “Unbelievable,” Seagulls all-rounder Craig Sheedy said of the premiership glory. “It was a great day, it worked out really well. “He deserved to be the one to hit the winning runs. Right till the end he was focused on what he was doing.” Williamstown feared that Kew’s total would be hard to chase down. The pitch was not impossible to make runs on, but it did take patience. “It was a pitch where, if you lost wickets, you needed a bit of time to get in,” Sheedy said. “It wasn’t a big score, but they probably got 20 to 25 more than what we would’ve liked.” A fast start from Brenton Hodges, who made a run-a-ball 17, got Williamstown in front of the run rate required. Pat O’Malley helped set the foundation with 12 off 27. It was McMinn and captain-coach Dale McDonald who did most of the heavy lifting for the Seagulls. The pair combined for a 79-run third wicket partnership before McDonald was dismissed for 38 off 70. McMinn and Sheedy, who contributed 23 off 30, had an unbroken 50-run stand to guide Williamstown to victory with 29 balls to spare. Earlier in the day, Williamstown did well to contain Kew to a manageable score to chase. O’Malley was the focal point of the Seagulls attack. The left arm spinner finished with 3-23 off nine overs, including the scalp of Kew top scorer David Wildsmith.

IN THE DOGHOUSE

cricket legend Arthur Dean died last weekend. Arthur was a former club captain who represented Victoria and led his side to the club’s first grand final in the mid ’60s. Arthur was named in the Footscray team of the century and was elevated to the Hall of Fame. Footscray has a wonderful history of fast bowling and Arthur was one of the finest. Also sad to see the passing of Stephen Myall, a lawyer and magistrate who had a long association with local footy through his role on the tribunal and board of the WRFL.

AFL season is under way, even though Bulldog supporters like me are in denial. The VFL season kicks off this Sunday at Torquay when Geelong and Werribee meet in what is becoming an annual seaside opener to the season. It was “a big relief” for the Seagulls to end the club’s 11-year flag drought and reward those who have worked so hard to put the club in a position to compete for a premiership. “There was a lot of people there today that have been around the club for 50 years or more,” Sheedy said. “To see their faces after the game was unbelievable.”

Conti bounces back to underpin grand final victory Monique Conti was a risk worth taking for the Western Bulldogs. The western suburbs star was drafted with pick three for her potential of being a big-game player and she delivered on the occasion that matters most, claiming the best-on-ground in the Bulldogs’ six-point grand final win over the Brisbane Lions at Ikon Park on Saturday. Bulldogs coach Paul Groves knew he had a special talent in Conti, but getting her up to speed after she had played a long basketball season culminating in a grand final series with the Melbourne Boomers in the Women’s National Basketball League was going to be the toughest part. “We knew that because of her basketball, she’d probably slip a little bit in the draft,” Groves said. “We were really keen to have those picks, take Izzy [Isabel Huntington] at pick one and then for Mon to come three and you’ve seen [Collingwood’s] Chloe’s [Molley] season at two, so it’s a pretty special little bunch.

“She was always going to be markedly better from round one through to round seven. “Even in her basketball, she’s a big game player and I had that feeling from her.” Conti was electrifying in the third quarter of the grand final for the Bulldogs. The Rising Star nominee turned the game in her team’s favour, racking up possessions at will across the midfield to be a key driving force along with star Emma Kearney. Conti’s dominance came after a bit of self-evaluating at half-time. “I had to adjust to the wet weather footy and I wasn’t doing that in the first half personally,” she said. “I had to lift my game and try and get the ball on the ground because that’s where it was. “It falls into the advantage of the smaller players, so I thought I just had to adjust a little bit in that sense and be on the bottom of the packs a bit more.” Conti capped her quarter with a goal that extended the lead to a game-high 13 points

at three quarter-time. It was an opportunistic piece of play from the 18-year-old. It was a big day for Conti to capture an AFL Women’s premiership medal. The disappointment of losing the WNBL grand final series is still fresh in her mind, but this has undoubtedly brought her joy. “Coming off a WNBL championship grand final series and then losing in the third game, it was really tough for me,” Conti said. “Then sort of to switch off from basketball mode and come into football with a great group of girls, great coaches and coaching staff as well, just have that seven, eight weeks focusing on footy and trying to make it all the way and coming to grand final week, it was there up for grabs and we all did it together.” Lance Jenkinson Monique Conti was the game breaker in the second half for the Western Bulldogs. Gators lose their radar Altona Gators will go into the Easter break with an undesirable 0-3 record in the Big V basketball men’s division 2, but coach Des Radoslovic is not disheartened with what he has seen from his team so far this season. The Gators opened the season with two tough road games and were in positions to win late in games against Mildura Heat and Wallan Panthers before suffering narrow defeats. Their home opener on Sunday was the Gators low point so far, losing 63-45 to the Coburg Giants at the Altona Basketball Stadium. It was a lack of execution, rather than effort, that cost the Gators a chance of victory in front of their home fans. “We just could not hit a shot,” Radoslovic said. “At one stage in the second quarter, we were 3-from-27 from the field. “The guys kept fighting for the whole game, we won the second half, we kept on rebounding and sticking to their guns, but we couldn’t hit a shot.” Lance Jenkinson

Altona sweeps to premiership

Altona is in seventh heaven after taking out the 2017-18 Bowls Victoria premier division flag. The A’s claimed their seventh top-flight premiership with an 86-58 victory over Melbourne in the grand final at the Deer Park Dome on Sunday. It was a comprehensive victory for the minor premiership winning A’s, sweeping all four rinks. Brad Peck filed the biggest rink win of the day, downing Matty Ellul 24-13. The other A’s winning skips were Nathan Wilson, who toppled Bryce Young 24-15, Dane McKinnon, who edged Shane Fordham 18-14 and Brett Foley, who squeezed past Scott Mortimer 20-16. It was a huge turnaround for Altona, which was forced to cash in its double chance after losing to Melbourne in week one of the finals and just avoided elimination with a one-shot victory over Deer Park in the preliminary final.

The Western Bulldogs had to overcome a multitude of obstacles en route to their first premiership in the AFL women’s competition. The Bulldogs wore down the Brisbane Lions to win by six points in a gripping grand final at a rain-soaked Ikon Park on Saturday, with the final scoreline reading 4.3 (27)-3.3 (21). It all came down to the dying seconds, with the Lions mounting a strong attacking move that was detonated by a composed Naomi Ferres mark on the siren. At that moment, the Bulldogs’ theme song, Daughters of the West, blasted out over the loud speakers amid an outpouring of joy for all in the red, white and blue. The Bulldogs had won the cup in the AFLW’s second season. Bulldogs coach Paul Groves said the premiership was recognition for all the hard work put in by all involved. “Just very proud – it’s probably the over-riding emotion at the moment for the 30 girls that have really busted their gut,” he said. From the first bounce this season, the

Western Bulldogs encountered and dealt with a number of hurdles. There was a season-ending knee injury to rookie Daria Bannister in round one, a season-ending knee injury to No.1 draft pick Isabel Huntington in round two and the untimely loss to Adelaide Crows in round three that followed and left question marks about the Bulldogs’ depth. The Bulldogs needed to beat Melbourne in the last round to advance to the grand final. They did, but at a severe cost, with captain Katie Brennan suspended for the grand final after a sling tackle. Groves is adamant the suspension had no impact inside the walls of the club. “We were really open, honest, in our discussions with the players,” he said. The Bulldogs had a mountain to climb within the grand final itself. They were goalless at half-time and trailing by a kick as they struggled to adapt to wet conditions they had not experienced all season. The momentum of the game swung on the back of a long 50-metre Deanna Berry goal that skidded through straight after the half-time

break. Kirsten McLeod put the Bulldogs in front soon after with a crumbing goal. It was Monique Conti, best on ground, who electrified the Bulldogs in the third term, capping off a brilliant quarter with a beautiful snap goal to extend the lead to 13 at three-quarter time. Brisbane responded in the last quarter with a goal through Jess Wuetschner, but Bulldog superstar Emma Kearney returned fire with a composed set shot to get the Bulldogs back out to a 12-point lead. Kearney’s 15 disposals were all quality. Only stand-in skipper Ellie Blackburn had more for the Bulldogs with 17, while Angelica Gogos had a major impact with nine disposals to go with nine tackles. Kirsty Lamb had 12 disposals and eight tackles and Jenna Bruton had 13 disposals and seven tackles. Brisbane made one final push, Wuetschner kicking another major to cut the margin to five points. The dying minutes were an arm wrestle, but the Bulldogs held on and the premiership was theirs.
