Crime takes a downturn Police are praising community efforts to help stamp out crime as rates in the inner-west hit their lowest levels for a decade following a dramatic plunge in recorded offences. Crime data for 2017, released last week, shows crime plummeted almost 15 per cent in Maribyrnong and nearly nine per cent in Hobsons Bay in the 12 months to December. Maribyrnong’s crime rate fell by 14.7 per cent, one of the largest drops in history, as recorded offences dropped from 9135 in 2016 to 8019 in 2017. The result outpaced the overall statewide decrease in the offence rate of 9.9 per cent.

The plunge was spearheaded by a 12.3 per cent drop in theft offences, down by 486, and a 33.3 per cent reduction in drug use and possession offences from 2016. Hobsons Bay’s crime rate was down 8.9 per cent as the total number of recorded offences fell from 6706 to 6079. Footscray Inspector Adrian Healy said police had been targetting high-volume crime such as burglaries and theft from cars. “We have been doing a lot of pro-active work around those areas, but also making inroads through enforcement operations,” he said. Inspector Healy said the increasing popularity of the centre of Footscray and Maribyrnong council’s CCTV network were

New school for learning precinct By Benjamin Millar A new junior secondary school campus will be built in Seddon as part of a $237 million state government cash splash on future schools across Melbourne. The new campus, directly south of Victoria University’s Nicholson Street Campus, will form part of the new Footscray Learning Precinct. There is as yet no opening date for the junior

co-ed campus at Seddon but another junior co-ed campus at the Gilmore College site and a new senior campus on the current Footscray City College site will begin operating from 2020. Gilmore College will start changing its enrolments from next year, not taking students in years 7 or 11, while Footscray City College students will finish their schooling at the current site. unspecified sum as part of a $236.8 million spending package to buy land for 14 schools. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said parents in the Yarraville, Seddon and Kingsville area have been campaigning for more than a

decade for a government secondary school in the area. “With the Seddon land to be acquired, the next step is to design and build a new vertical school for a generation of students.” Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said the land acquisition marks another major milestone. “The Footscray Learning Precinct will be an Australian-first, providing early years, primary, secondary, and post-secondary education all in one precinct.”

Green workshop all stitched up Don’t be surprised to see women on their sewing machines in Altona’s Logan Reserve on Sunday. Hobsons Bay Boomerang Bags is hosting a Sew in Public Day to raise awareness about how people can reduce their reliance on plastic bags. Marilyn Olliff started the reusable cloth bag initiative in Hobsons Bay. They are known as Boomerang Bags because you borrow and bring back a bag from locations such as Coles supermarket or Altona library. Now, the group is holding public demonstrations to show people how to make

their own sustainable alternatives to plastic shopping bags using recycled material. Volunteers will sew, pin, cut, screenprint and make beeswax wraps (an alternative to cling wrap) under the trees in the park. “This public event is to show the local and wider community what we do in our workshops and educate them on ways to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags, as well as other plastics such as straws and cling wrap,” Ms Olliff said. “We have a lot of wonderful people in our workshops – volunteers teach newcomers how to sew and we learn other skills.”

The group has also proposed a balloon ban on council-owned or managed land. Hobsons Bay council last week voted to refer the group’s appeal to its environmental sustainability portfolio committee. Aaron van Egmond has been appointed as Hobsons Bay Council’s new chief executive, replacing Chris Eddy. Mr van Egmond has served as CEO of Hepburn Shire Council since 2012, before which he worked for Towong Shire Council for 11 years in a director role. Before entering local government, he was a project manager in construction. As reported by Star Weekly last October, Mr Eddy, who was appointed Hobsons Bay CEO in 2012, did not seek to renew his contract which expires in May. He expects to remain in the public sector. Mr van Egmond was appointed by a unanimous vote of councillors. Mayor Angela Altair said Mr van Egmond had impressed the councillors in what was a very competitive process. “Mr van Egmond has proven skills as a CEO and is well suited to help lead us and the organisation during a period in local government where we will see significant change,” she said. Mr van Egmond said he was looking forward to starting in the role later this year and to working with the council and communities of Hobsons Bay. “I can’t wait to start spending time with the mayor, councillors and the staff of Hobsons Bay to learn more about how they think we can deliver on the aspirations of the community,” he said. He starts on June 12. Corporate services director Tammi Rose will be acting CEO from May 1.

Net gain for tennis kids Footscray North Primary School is making a racket about its chances of producing one of Australia’s next tennis hot shots. Two new Hot Shots courts were recently unveiled at the school as part of Tennis Victoria’s vision to eventually have courts rolled out in all primary schools. In the first such project in Melbourne’s west, Footscray North joins Clayton North and East Reservoir as primary schools with the courts now in use. The project cements a partnership between the school and the nearby Maidstone Tennis Club. The club will operate out of the school and offer training and programs for the pupils. Tennis player Tammi Patterson joined the

school as a special guest for the official launch of the courts, handing out free tennis racquets to all the prep pupils. Wallet theft

Police are investigating a theft of a wallet from a car in West Footscray and subsequent deceptions in Yarraville earlier this month. The wallet was stolen from a car parked on Holmwood Drive between 6.30pm and 7pm on March 5 by two men believed to be driving a 2005-2007 black Holden Astra. A credit card contained within the wallet was used soon afterwards to purchase goods from two businesses in Yarraville. Plea for crossing safety By Goya Dmytryshchak More than 550 people have signed a petition demanding that Hobsons Bay council install pedestrian traffic lights at a Newport crossing used by numerous children. A pedestrian was last week struck by a car at the zebra crossing in Mason Street, between Schutt and Mirls streets. Ed Moran, who started the petition on Change.org, said he had witnessed many near misses. “Newport residents need a signal-controlled crossing operated by pedestrians … before there is a fatal accident,” his petition states. Newport’s Glen Baird said many children used the crossing to get to school. “The childcare centre’s right in front of the crossing and then you’ve also got Sacred Heart school, so all the kids from that side of Newport have to cross this crossing to get there,” he said. “It’s a crossing that all the kids use and what happens is, the drivers are not stopping for the crossing, they’re just going through it. “I live in the street and I take my son to school in the mornings. Even when we take our dog for a walk, it’s a real struggle to get onto that crossing because the cars just won’t stop. I just want the council to put a set of traffic lights in.” Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair said installing traffic lights “would require the approval of VicRoads”. A VicRoads spokesman said Mason Street did not come under its control or authority and that it was the council’s responsibility. “We will work closely with Hobsons Bay City Council on its plans to improve safety on Mason Street and surrounding roads,” the spokesman said.

Planting ideas for garden plan A draft master plan for Williamstown Botanic Gardens has been released by Hobsons Bay council for community feedback. The heritage-listed gardens were laid out between 1856 and 1960. The Victorian Heritage Register stated the gardens were: “historically important as one of Victoria’s earliest and most intact botanic gardens and, along with St Kilda, one of only two suburban botanic gardens established in the 19th century in Victoria”. The council commissioned Laidlaw and Laidlaw Design to prepare a master plan. The plan stated that the public’s expectations have changed and “to stay relevant botanic gardens are expected to be more than just collections of plants and places to walk and picnic”. It proposed visitor services such as a cafe, educational facilities, information desks and better access to public toilets. Other recommendations included connecting the north and south garden areas, improving irrigation and new garden beds and trees. The cost of implementing the plan has been estimated at $2.6 million over 10 years. The master plan will be on exhibition until May 11. Community walks through the garden to discuss the plans will be held on April 6 and 10 at 11am and 1pm. Register at participate.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au

Name and shame call for EPA By Goya Dmytryshchak

air-quality monitoring measures and working with councils to improve air quality in Brooklyn. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan called on the EPA to identify up to 10 businesses out of 120 on the Brooklyn industrial estate that were causing most air pollution. “Sadly, the report reveals that up to 10 businesses continue to be a source of inappropriate air emissions and noxious odours,” he said. “What gives these operators the right to pollute our community?

A state MP has called for the top 10 polluters on Brooklyn’s industrial estate to be named and shamed by the Environment Protection Authority. The call comes as a scathing report by the Victorian Auditor General found the EPA had failed to properly monitor air quality across Victoria. The auditor general made four recommendations for the EPA in its report, including expanding and improving its

A light touch approach is not working as a deterrent.” In a statement, the EPA said it would work with local councils and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to implement the recommendations in the report. It said reforms to improve air-quality

monitoring and management included establishing a chief environmental scientist, more effectively holding polluters to account and reforms to environmental licensing. Environmental Justice Australia lawyer Nicola Rivers said the EPA’s reliance on industry to self-report pollution incidents and licence breaches was inadequate. “As well as significant improvements in how the EPA monitors and regulates air pollution, a new federal legal framework for national air pollution standards is desperately needed,” she said.

Jail letters shed light A decade-long exchange of letters with prisoners was the inspiration for a new work by westside theatre makers being performed this week. To Lonely, with Love is based on Jennifer Monk’s 10-year exchange of letters with people incarcerated in jail. Monk found that rather than writing her thoughts and feelings in a journal, sharing them with others over time changed both the writer and reader, forging a real and deep connection. “This work therefore explores how people find themselves isolated, and how the act of letter writing can bring them out of their personal prisons,” she said. Based on real letters received from real prisoners, the play explores how the intimacy of the written word can bring light to the darkest of moments. “To Lonely, With Love hopes to comment on isolation and how it can exist in many forms – jail, home, an institution, even being a prisoner of one’s own thoughts,” Monk said. “The piece looks closely at relationships

Hospital call-out for volunteers By Benjamin Millar When Michael Santagati lost his father in 2011, one of the last memories he had was seeing how happy his father had been after being visited by a social support volunteer in hospital. The Altona man decided then and there he would take on such a role, and seven years after joining up he can’t imagine not being involved. “I try to visit some of the elderly patients, sit down, have a conversation with them and ask them how their day went or about their life,” he said.

“A lot of these patients don’t have someone visiting them and it can get very lonely.” Mr Santagati spends about three hours a week at the hospital, making conversation and offering company at what is often a difficult or stressful time. He said it can be done in his own time and visiting times are flexible. When Samantha Styles passed out at work, her colleagues received a shock but also an education. The Compton Green sales agent had a flare up of endometriosis, a condition where the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterine wall. While one in 10 Australian women is understood to suffer with endometriosis, little is still known about the condition. This had been the case for Ms Styles, who suffered years of mysterious pain until her diagnosis. “I was diagnosed in 2013, after years of not knowing what was wrong, having my appendix removed and my gall bladder taken out,” she said. “Since then we have tried every treatment under the sun but nothing is working.” The condition can often lead to infertility, but as a mother of three Ms Styles counts herself among the “lucky ones”. Hit-run driver’s appeal rejected By Goya Dmytryshchak An ice-addicted hit-run driver who left a cyclist for dead and hid out in Altona North has lost her bid to reduce her prison term. Rebekah Stewart is serving a six-year prison term with a four-year minimum for crossing on to the wrong side of the road and colliding head-on with a cyclist in Ballarat on Good Friday in 2016. Her lawyer argued in Victoria’s Court of

Appeal that the sentence was manifestly excessive. Victim Christian Ashby, then aged 36, had been on an early-morning bike ride when he was struck. The court heard the force of impact propelled him into the air, rotating a number of times before he landed on the road. Justice Paul Coghlan described Mr Ashby’s injuries as catastrophic. “They included multiple fractures to his ribs,

hips and spine; damage to his right kidney which required its removal; severe traumatic brain injury; fractures to every bone in his left hand; punctures to both his lungs; bruising to the liver; ruptured urethra; nerve damage; and post-traumatic amnesia which lasted 36 days,” he said. The formerly keen triathlete will never be able to run or jog again. Justice Coughlan said Stewart’s driving-related criminal history, which

included drink and drug driving, was relevant. At the time of the crash, Stewart, then aged 23, was driving an unregistered vehicle while disqualified and was on a suspended sentence. She fled the crash scene and took her car to a friend’s house, lying that she had hit a kangaroo. On March 31, 2016, police tracked her to an address in Second Avenue, Altona North, where she was arrested. Her appeal was dismissed.

The first cousin of Australian boxing great Lionel Rose gets emotional when he talks about how his boxing dream ended. His story has been immortalised in Stolen Glory: The Tale of Porky Brooke, a film from Welcome Stranger Productions directed by Altona Meadows’ Aaron Ellis and produced by Lester Ellis jnr.

Aaron interviewed boxing royalty from Melbourne’s west for the film, including his uncle, Lester “Master Blaster” Ellis, and Williamstown’s Barry “Boy” Michael, who broke Porky’s unbeaten record. Porky, now 54 and living in Keilor Downs, is described in the film as a prodigy. He worshipped Rose and left school at 16 to follow him in to the ring. Porky had 18 straight wins before winning the Commonwealth lightweight title at Melbourne’s Festival Hall in 1984 aged 21. His battler parents, Graeme snr and Gwen, had put their Flemington house on the line to finance his bid for the Commonwealth title. Porky had a shot at becoming world champion when he was made to undergo non-compulsory medical tests that detected an irregularity. Speaking to Star Weekly at the Team Ellis Gym on a gritty Keilor East estate where he mentors young boxers, Porky said he believed he was targeted for testing because of a falling

out with management. “It hurt – it hurt a lot, the way I went out of boxing,” he said. “I didn’t want to go out that way, and the boxing board doing this to me – Commonwealth champion – it really hurt, them taking my licence off me.

“The boxing board made me go for a head scan, memory test and an EEG. Well, the head scans were good, memory perfect, but something small was showing on the EEG.” Porky went to court to fight to get his licence back. But he was delivered a knockout blow, barred from boxing at age 22.

“There’s a lot of politics in boxing,” Porky said. “It eats at me and it hurts, just what the boxing board did to me … I don’t want to swear.” Stolen Glory: The Tale of Porky Brooke will premiere at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre in May.

MY PLACE Creative artist Jody Haines, and her dog Bailey MacScruffy, have fast fallen for Footscray’s natural and cultural charms. She speaks with Benjamin Millar. I moved to Footscray from Brisbane in July 2015, madly relocating during the middle of winter without a jumper to my name. The shift was to study my masters – art in public space at RMIT. The collective we – my partner in crime Tony, our dog Bailey MacScruffy and I – landed in Footscray and have been in the area ever since. What do you love most about the area? The people, the food, the river – which is a magical beast all to its own. What are your favourite local place or places? I love to hang out at the river or sit down at Willy beach. I have a ‘thing’ for flowing bodies of water – it helps me to focus, calm and re-energise, plus Bails gets to run around like a doofus while I chill. My favourite local eateries/ drinkeries are: Seddon Deadly Sins, The Rev, Dancing Dog, Bar Josephine and all the food stops of Footscray, especially any Vietnamese hot, spicy, noodle soups! How did your love of being a “Do’er of things” develop? “Do’er of things” is the label I give myself when people ask “So, what do you do?”. That question is a hard one to answer. I’m an artist, curator, photographer, producer, image maker. MacGyver reincarnate … there are so many

things that make up each person, one label is hard to define. It frees me up to be me and use the tools/skills needed at the time. The greatest rewards are the freedom to create – a privilege I never take for granted – and the conversations I get to have with people when either creating or when they’re experiencing the work. The biggest challenge is self-care and sustainability – being an artist is typically a state of either flood or famine. What is the idea behind your #IAMWOMAN project? #IAMWOMAN is about subverting the status quo of female visual representation across print and social media, where women are generally placed at two ends of the spectrum; either as objects of desire or objects of ridicule, leaving no space to be anything else in between. I’m utilising the returned gaze and an equality within the visual language applied. Being a female image maker, I have a mandate for women to be seen, not as an object but as an individual – strong, beautiful and complex, in all our parts not just the constructed ideals. What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you? I love alt country and blues music … and play the banjo.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir says a few tweaks have transformed Sahra’s Sahra’s Kitchen is the final regular Racecourse Road Somalian eatery to be covered by CTS. We’ve held off for a couple of reasons. We’ve eaten here a heap of times, but truth be told it has long seemed to operate, at least partially, as something of a community hub for the local Somalian community. While we’ve always been made to feel welcome, it has presented as being a little less open and viable for members of the general public. Plus, the last time I stepped in here, they’d run out of rice! There’s no such problems this time around as Bennie and settle in for a mid-week dinner. Indeed, the place had been tidied up and refreshed. There’s cool, matching furniture and even some artwork on the walls. We find the service prompt and cheerful. Sahra’s Kitchen is definitely open for your business. And there’s rice in the house! The menu is quite long and varied, running to breakfast dishes and a tuna sandwich. There’s even a transnational touch in the form of an injera meal. I’m told that’s unavailable this night, so Bennie and I opt for our regular rice/pasta with meat ($15). But first, soup – of course! Here the lamb-based concoction is cloudy – almost like a “cream of” soup. It’s delicious. There’s nary a trace of meat yet the whole thing is profoundly and deeply flavoured with lamb.

Bennie’s spaghetti and its tomato-based sauce is not as wet as some, nor as dry as others, and a touch more oily. He slurps up every strand with glee. My rice is fine but plain. All the lamb is tender and wonderful – even the more hunka chunks. A friend commented this week how he finds the Somalian food at one of his new faves varies depending on who is manning the stoves. We like that about all our favourite Somalian joints, that the food is hardly ever the same. It varies depending not just on who is in the kitchen but also on the hour of the day and the day of the week. In this case, we are blessed with plentiful amounts of pan-tanned veg – onion, carrot, capsicum and even some broccoli. If not the best part of our meals, the vegetable factor is certainly the crowning glory. fter walking into The Strand – Williamstown’s home of superb seafood dining – guests’ attention is inevitably drawn first to the magnificent views of the bay and the Melbourne city skyline beyond. But the food and service to be found here definitely don’t take second billing. The Strand’s events co-ordinator, Bronwyn Dann, says the restaurant’s impeccable table service, fresh seafood, talented chefs and, of course, those famous views combine to keep her team busy all year round. Bronwyn talks glowingly about their fishmonger and the yabbies she recently put on the Express Menu. “Because they were available and were just so, so fresh,” she enthuses. “They were scampering around the tubs when we got them in.” The Express Menu is a daily lunch list popular with locals and people who come across on the ferry for a day out. It is available Monday to Friday, from noon to 3pm. “At $40 for two courses and $45 for three courses, we believe it is standout value,” Bronwyn says. “It is always the freshest available, as we take the opportunity to buy seafood that is maybe a little unique, or perhaps only available in smaller quantities because it was a chance catch, and offer the chefs an opportunity to be creative.

“So it’s not only great value, it is usually an inspired menu that is the freshest you can get.” It is this attitude towards the art of cooking that helps make The Strand one of the best seafood restaurants in Melbourne. “We have a fantastic relationship with our fishmonger and catch up every other day and find out what’s in-season, what’s just come in,” Bronwyn says. “So you know you’ll always be eating ‘just-off-the-boat’ fresh. “He sources our fish almost entirely from local fisherman – the way it should be.” Bronwyn says mussels are very good at the moment. “Last week we served them with linguini, chilli, garlic and white wine sauce,” she says. “They were delicious. “Tower Tuesday is another fun special – perfect for date night. The deal is buy our famous seafood tower and get a bottle of wine included. It’s an easy-to-organise night out and I’m sure our diners will love it.” Wednesday evenings from 6pm are Reef and Beef nights, and for $35 per person diners can enjoy Porterhouse steak, mussels, prawns and scallops with brandy and cream sauce. Late goal just enough By Lance Jenkinson It was only fitting that Brooke Lochland kicked the goal that put the Western Bulldogs into its first AFL Women’s grand final. As she had done all season, the goal sneak somehow found space in a crowded forward line, received a handball over the top from Jenna Bruton and snapped truly from the top of the goal square at the Geelong Road end to wrench back the lead with a little over a minute to go. The Bulldogs held on desperately in the dying seconds for a thrilling two-point win over Melbourne in a winner-takes-all final round encounter at the Whitten Oval on Saturday night. Emotions poured out from both sides, with tears of joy from the Bulldogs players and of disappointment from the Demons. Lochland, who has enjoyed a break-out year as a forward, has excited Bulldogs fans with her dynamic attacking play this season. She kicked a league record-breaking haul of seven goals in a game against Carlton and topped the AFLW goalkicking. Bulldogs coach Paul Groves did not actually see the goal that got the Bulldogs into the grand final, but was thrilled to find out that it was Lochland who kicked it. “I didn’t really see it properly because I was down on the bench,” Groves said. “I’m just rapt for her because the last few weeks they’ve [opposition teams] put a lot of work into her because she’s playing so well and it actually gets her one clear in the goalkicking.” In a low-scoring scrap, it was the Western Bulldogs’ home ground knowledge that came to the fore. The Bulldogs defended for their life into the wind at the Barkly Street end and played with their usual flair going the other way. They were not in front on the scoreboard at quarter-time, but they had the game where they wanted it, having restricted Melbourne to one goal with a three-goal wind in the first term. Aided by the breeze in the second, the Bulldogs kicked away to a game-high 13-point lead, with goals to Emma Kearney, Brennan and Deanna Berry. Melbourne managed a late goal through Karen Paxman to trim their deficit to seven at half-time. Katherine Smith kicked the only goal of the third term for Melbourne, but her side was wasteful with the wind, kicking 1.6. The last quarter was a fight to the death. Monique Conti turned a lucky free kick into a goal and one-point advantage for the Bulldogs, before Kate Hore wrestled back the lead for the Demons.

IN THE DOGHOUSE two founding clubs of the old FDFL competition, Parkside and Braybrook, are both admired and loathed for their success and survival. Both have experienced the highs and lows of football and in recent years have almost disappeared. Braybrook heads into the 2018 season with a new enthusiastic coach in Jason Hamilton and a bit of the old Brooker swagger back at Pennell Reserve. Albion Football Club made the news last week for all the wrong reasons. Social media was awash with news of a racial scandal at the club involving a top official. I don’t want to get into the intricacies of this incident, but just an observation in general about racist behaviour: surely everyone now gets it that it is totally 100 per cent not acceptable in any form. The slightest tinge of it will be the demise of clubs in a very short space of time. Albion has other issues which are clouding its future as a club without this. There are some incredible people who have put their life into the club over the years and they, along with the current coaches, players and volunteers, deserve the chance to be part of the 2018 season and beyond.

Western Bulldogs could add yet another trophy to the cabinet this weekend when the AFL women’s team plays in its first ever grand final. What an amazing effort by senior coach Paul Groves and his charges after a few nail biting results during the competition, none better than the two-point win over Melbourne to secure the grand final berth. The girls head to Ikon Park Carlton this Saturday at 1.05pm for the chance to create history. After a drought it is raining cups at Whitten Oval, with the women’s cup set to join the AFL and VFL cups by Saturday night. Good luck to all when they take on the Brisbane Lions Saturday.

The chase for the all-important first innings lead between Yarraville Club and Doutta Stars in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division grand final sits on a knife’s edge at Donald McLean Reserve. The momentum swung wildly all weekend and we are no closer to finding out who will have the upper hand after the first innings. Coach, star enjoy Footscray’s grand final win from afar The grand final experience for Footscray Baseball Club women’s division 3 coach Tony Culph and his wife and star player Janine was a strange one. In agreeing to coach, Culph warned the club that he and Janine would not be available for grand final day should the Bulldogs reach the season decider. “I told them when the fixture came out that there would be one game I’d miss all year and that’s the grand final if we made it,” Culph said. “My wife’s son got married in Sydney on that day, so even she had to miss it.” The Culphs understandably had their mobile phones switched off during the wedding ceremony. It was only when the wedding photos were being taken that Culph decided to find out the score – and he rode the game all the way to the finish, albeit from Sydney. “I texted someone and found out it was the top of the fifth and we were in front 4-2 and

kept in contact a bit until they won,” Culph said. “That made the beer at the wedding taste sweeter, so it was good.” Footscray went on to beat Moorabbin 7-4, atoning for its loss to the same team in week one of the finals.

The Bulldogs needed someone to step up with the bat in Janine Culph’s absence and it was Emma Lowe who took on that responsibility. “Janine bats two and she had an on-base average of over .800, so you’re taking someone out who gets on base all the time,” Tony said. “I moved Emma Lowe up the list to bat at two and she got three hits, scored twice and got a couple of RBIs.” If a most valuable player award had been given out in the grand final, it would have gone to Footscray pitcher and playing president Lynn Fraser. She had one of her worst outings of the season against Moorabbin earlier in the finals, but she was scintillating on the mound in the grand final. “Lynn has hardly walked anyone all year, but she walked eight in that game [earlier in the finals], and they just smashed the ball,” Culph said. “In the grand final, she didn’t walk any, pitched a lot better and shut them right back. She threw 24 balls and 76 strikes. One inning

she sent down eight pitches and they were all strikes.” The Footscray summer was mostly positive. The Bulldogs reached the women’s division 1 grand final, which they lost 11-4 to a star-studded Springvale that made it six premierships in a row. Footscray won a men’s premiership, eclipsing Essendon 10-8 in a thrilling division 4 north-west grand final. The Bulldogs had plenty of individual success with Abbey McLellan taking out the division 1 women’s batting and home run awards. They will also have a number of state representatives with McLellan to be joined by Amanda Asay and Britt Cedelland in the Victorian Blue team and Angela Youens, Kirsten Buzzing, Eva Gottschling, Alanna Kappler and Marita Taylor in the Tony Culph-coached Victorian White team. Bulldog flag bid on track By Lance Jenkinson Footscray is one step away from a Premier Cricket grand final after negotiating a way past Monash Tigers with a five-wicket quarter-final victory at Central Reserve at the weekend. Standing in the way of the Bulldogs and a first trip to a season decider since their 2013-14 premiership glory is Fitzroy Doncaster. There could not be a tougher semi-final assignment for the Bulldogs – facing a side that has won the past two Premier Cricket flags and finished as minor premier this season. Footscray captain Dylan Kight acknowledges the toughness of the opponent, but is backing his team’s ability to turn up in big matches, as it did against Monash in week one of the finals. “They’ve gone back-to-back, they’re looking to win three in a row and are the minor premiers, so they’ve been the benchmark,” Kight said. “We’ve got an enormous amount of respect for them, but we won’t be fearing them in any way. If we go out there and follow our plans, we’ll go a long way to pushing the game deep on Sunday and then you never know.”

Footscray hardly put a foot wrong in the win over Monash. The Bulldogs were confronted with unfavourable bowling conditions on day one, but rolled Monash out for 197. On a hot day, the Bulldogs needed to be disciplined with their lines and lengths and follow their plans because there was little assistance in the pitch. “If you don’t have every single person that comes on to bowl buying into that, you’ve really got no chance of maintaining the pressure for all the overs,” Kight said. “It was a really good effort to restrict them to 197 and bowl them out.” Ben Green, a surprise selection for Footscray, starred with the ball. Green is an experienced campaigner, but had not been seen in the first XI since way back in round two. It was a masterstroke from the selectors as Green took 5-53 off 24 overs, including 10 maidens. “He only found out late Thursday night that he was going to be playing,” Kight said. “He’s played 115 first XI games, so we knew what to

expect from him … and that’s what we got. The wicket suited his bowling – it was a bit low. He just bowled stump to stump, we ringed up the field and they weren’t getting away from him.” In a calculated run chase, the Bulldogs were confronted with similarly disciplined bowling from Monash, so they had to be patient. Matthew Underwood did a power of work, chewing up 169 balls for his 35. That allowed Hayden Butterworth, with 38 off 71, and Travis Dean, 75 off 165, to accelerate later in the innings. Dean’s performance was one right from the top shelf. “I’ve played a lot of cricket with Trav, but I think that was the best knock I’ve seen him play with Footscray and probably one of the most important,” Kight said. “It’s hard to explain how difficult it was to score on that wicket. “With the wicket being slow and low, it was very tough to score and Monash bowled well.” Footscray’s semi-final against Fitzroy Doncaster will be a Saturday-Sunday two-day game at Schramms Reserve this weekend.

There was no hiccups this time around for Williamstown. The Seagulls marched confidently through to the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west group grand final with an impressive six-wicket win over Melton at MacPherson Park Recreational Reserve at the weekend. Memories of last season’s semi-final heartbreak against Altona and last week’s qualifying final slip-up to Plenty Valley were extinguished as the Seagulls booked a spot in the season decider against Kew in a two-day game starting Saturday at Victoria Park. “It was always going to be tough at Melton, but we played really good cricket over the whole two days,” Seagulls all rounder Craig Sheedy said. “Ability-wise, if we went through each player and had enough guys play well on the same day, we can beat anyone … and we did that this week.” Williamstown was in total command after the opening day’s play. The Seagulls bowled Melton out for 168 and there were no weak links in the Seagulls’ bowling attack as they built pressure on Melton’s batsmen all day. Patrick O’Malley was the main destroyer for Williamstown. The left arm spinner finished with immaculate figures of 3-29 off 20 overs. “He bowled in good areas and just kept asking questions of them every ball,” Sheedy said. Bryce Preston (2-25) and James Cook (2-22) were Williamstown’s other multiple wicket takers. Williamstown’s run chase got off to a sizzling start with opener Brenton Hodges wasting no time late on day one. The Seagulls had already picked off 18 runs before stumps, leaving them with just 151 to get on the second day. It only took the Seagulls 57 overs to put Melton out of its misery, with Hodges the key for the Gulls with 79 and skipper Dale McDonald (45) and Sheedy (20 not out) guiding the side to the target. Williamstown will be hard to beat in the grand final after recapturing its minor premiership winning form. The Seagulls have enjoyed success over Kew this season, beating it in round two. “Even though we’re playing at Kew, they’ve got the home ground advantage, if we have enough blokes play their best cricket over the weekend, we can beat anyone, anywhere,” Sheedy said. Brasher’s bold progress By Lance Jenkinson Dylan Brasher’s cricket career blossomed from the moment he scored a century in his first tournament with a Victorian team. Playing in the title-winning Victorian under-12 team in 2014, Brasher went out and scored 110 not out against the ACT in the final match and was immediately on the radar for underage state team selections. “The under-12 one was a bit unexpected because it’s hard to get picked when the trials are all over the place,” Brasher said. “It has snowballed from there.” Brasher has been consistently picked for Victorian teams since. The Taylors Lakes resident has produced some big innings in big games for his state. None bigger though than his 112 against South Australia at the under-17 national championships in September. Brasher, playing as the vice captain under budding star Mackenzie Harvey, had a superb tournament with 252 runs at an average of 36, but it was his century against SA that had tongues wagging. “I probably wasn’t hitting them as well early, but as soon as I got to 50, that’s when I knew I was hitting them out of the middle alright,” Brasher said. “That 100 is probably the highlight so far.” Brasher has also enjoyed some great moments with the Western Spirit at the state championships. As a bottom-age player in the under-18s, the 16-year-old made a massive 304 runs at 76, including 107 against the North West Wizards and 91 not out against North East Breakers. He was the top run scorer at the tournament. The only Spirit player to ever reach 300 at the under-18 state carnival was current Victorian Bushrangers players and Footscray teammate Travis Dean. Brasher has been blessed with quality coaching and helpful teammates throughout his junior career. The Spirit has played a big part in his development, as has his current club Footscray and junior club Taylors Lakes. “I try to take enough things off enough

people and try to put them into my own game,” Brasher said. Brasher is a year 11 student at the Maribyrnong Sports Academy. He credits the school for the development in his game between years 7 to 11 and his evolution as a leader. “It’s just amazing the transformation I’ve seen since year 7 to now.” The future is bright for Brasher. His ambition is to earn a first XI position for Footscray in the Premier Cricket and begin a push towards a state contract with the Victorian Bushrangers. The Australian baggy green is the ultimate dream. Brasher is the March nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved at state and/or national levels. Brasher will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to help him in achieving his sports goals.
