Get the good rail here Steamrail Victoria will reveal the inside of its Newport workshops, built in 1885, over two public open days during the Labour Day long weekend. Steamrail, a not-for-profit organisation, restores vintage steam, diesel and electric locomotives and carriages at the workshops off Champion Road. There will be nine steam locomotives – seven of which will be running – and other heritage rolling stock on display. The workshops were the birthplace of most of the Victorian Railways steam engines and carriages from the 1880s to the 1950s, and were used to manufacture military equipment during World World II. All Steamrail Victoria engines will be displayed, including the M232, the last to be built at the workshops, in 1959. Carriages will be open for inspection, including seating carriages from 1910 and 1940 and sleeping carriages from the famous Southern Aurora, Overland and the 1910 Adelaide express. The workshops will be open from 10am to 5pm for the open days on March 11 and 12. Enter via Shea Street, off Champion Road, Newport. Plans for a road bridge to replace the Aviation Road level crossing at Laverton were this week revealed by the state government, despite community concerns about it being “an eyesore”. It comes just three weeks after Hobsons Bay council called for community input over the Level Crossing Removal Authority’s two preferred options: a road bridge over the rail lines or lowering Aviation Road under the lines. At its February 13 meeting the council passed a resolution to seek feedback from commuters and residents from Altona Meadows, Laverton,

Seabrook and beyond. However, Altona MP Jill Hennessy on Friday announced that work would start this year on a road bridge over the current crossing, walking and cycling paths, and a pedestrian underpass to Aircraft station. Ward councillor Colleen Gates said the council supported the removal of the level crossing after 20 years of lobbying but that there were concerns about a road bridge. “Our community has already expressed concerns that a road bridge will have an impact to the visual amenity of the area and therefore we remain very hopeful that the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) will place

In 2017, Australia was ranked 35th on a global index measuring gender equality. Although gender parity won’t happen overnight, there is progress happening across the world with a very strong and growing movement of advocacy, activism and support. MY VIEW Council is about to release a five year strategy for the arts industry in our city. Most of us experience and enjoy the arts regularly but with little understanding of how the industry functions. The City of Maribyrnong is becoming a mecca for the arts in Melbourne and Australia. Almost 85% of people in Melbourne’s west attend arts events annually, and with the industry employing around 1500 people, it’s the seventh largest sector by gross regional product. It serves our residents and provides a valuable magnet for local and international tourists. Council supports this in many ways, through the Footscray Arts Centre and other local institutions, through grants to artists and events, and through the Festival City programme.

Maribyrnong’s $6m tunnel deal By Benjamin Millar The state government has agreed to stump up just under half of the $12.5 million sought by Maribyrnong council to offset the impact of the West Gate Tunnel toll-road project. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan last week announced a $6 million package for riverside improvements in Footscray on top of $5 million for Hobsons Bay described by Hobsons Bay Residents Association as “hush money”.

Maribyrnong council has consistently backed the $6.7 billion project, but raised a number of concerns about the impact of three new river crossings on its attempts to beautify its waterfront. Hobsons Bay withdrew its opposition to the project, prompting claims it was throwing “communities under the bus” in exchange for undertakings including a traffic study and sports ground upgrades. Maribyrnong council’s response to the tollway’s environment effects statement

Adopted in 2014, the plan includes a timber wharf and boardwalk with public moorings, an avenue of palm trees, improved lighting, seating and shelters. Maribyrnong mayor Cuc Lam said the $6 million will help offset the loss of amenity, but that the council was yet to determine the elements of the plan that would proceed. “We have, and will continue to, advocate for positive community outcomes as we believe the project has benefits for our community as it will remove trucks from our residential streets.”

Taking a stand on tunnel’s fallout

Residents protesting against a forecast rise in truck traffic fuelled by the West Gate Tunnel project will stage a peak-hour shutdown of one of Yarraville’s busiest intersections. The Maribyrnong Truck Action Group is spearheading a planned protest at the intersection of Williamstown Road and Francis Street from 8am next Tuesday, demanding that bans on trucks planned for some Yarraville and Footscray routes be extended to include Williamstown Road, as well as Millers Road in Brooklyn.

Truck numbers along single-lane, residential Williamstown Road are expected to double to 5000 by 2030 as bans on other routes, to be brought in at the completion of the $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel toll road in 2022, funnel more trucks on to the route. New parents, in particular, have expressed dismay at an increase in diesel emissions and noise. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group spokesman Martin Wurt said the route also put 875 kids at Yarraville West Primary School in

the danger zone for diesel pollution, along with babies and toddlers at a new childcare centre approved for the intersection where the protest will take place. The protest is being held in consultation with Victoria Police, which will handle traffic management during the shutdown. It follows similar protests by MTAG at the same intersection in 2016 and at other inner-west locations in recent years. Benjamin Millar

Residents in Altona North were stopped from entering or leaving their homes as forensic investigators tried to piece together events which resulted in two men taken to hospital, two on the run and a trail of blood splashed down a normally quiet suburban street on Saturday. Police were called to Misten Avenue about 9.30pm after reports of an altercation between two groups of men. Detective Senior Constable Gareth Mullins said two men in their 20s were taken to hospital with non-life threatening stab wounds while another two fled the scene. “We’re searching for a number of males at the moment who were believed to be involved,” he said. “Two of those males are described as having dark skin and they’ve left the scene in a small white sedan, possibly a Toyota.” He said police believed the fight broke out in front of a strip of shops which included a milk bar, Thai restaurant and several hairdressing salons. But a trail of blood stretching about 150 metres had forensic investigators poring over a large stretch of the avenue, with more than 10 family homes blocked off in both directions. One woman said the incident was “freaky” but despite being “pretty frightened” said she still loved her street and community. “It could happen anywhere,” she said. Detective Senior Constable Mullins said it was yet to be determined if the two groups knew each other or if anything was taken from the victims. Chainsaw massacre By Goya Dmytryshchak Police and Hobsons Bay council are investigating after about 20 trees were this month chopped down in Altona North by men who appeared to be testing a chainsaw. Up to four men wearing hi-vis shirts and wielding a chainsaw were seen by a number of people at the Toyota Nature Reserve along Kororoit Creek on February 25. Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek president Geoff Mitchelmore said he received reports of the men cutting down trees both in the morning and afternoon. “This wilful destruction of the environment and the work done by volunteers over 17 years developing this special area is a disgrace and disheartening to the thousands of people who have contributed to this environmental project along Kororoit Creek,” he said. “It is estimated that 20 mature trees (eight-10 years old) would have a nett worth of approximately $10,000.” Since its inception in 2001, the Friends group has transformed the banks of the creek by planting more than 50,000 trees and shrubs. The creek is a winter home for the endangered swift parrot and its rejuvenation has resulted in the return of more than 110 bird species. Friends volunteer Len Towerzey said it was heartbreaking to see the trees chopped down. “It’s very disheartening considering the amount of work we put in over the years to plant them,” he said. “Of course it makes you angry.” Mayor Angela Altair said it was disappointing that ratepayers would ultimately foot the bill for the thoughtlous act. “Replacing vandalised plants and trees costs us around $10,000 every year.”

Program in a class of its own Schoolgirls will train alongside some of the state’s top football players under a partnership being launched at Williamstown Bayside P-12 College on Thursday – International Women’s Day. Williamstown Football Club will deliver the accelerated football program for year 7-9 students, which will have them training with the club’s recently inaugurated VFL Women’s team. The campus will be the new pre-season training base for the club’s senior teams, and the Seagulls donated $50,000 towards upgrading the school’s oval. Seagulls’ chief executive Jason Reddick said it was an historic day. “Our club has now secured a football only pre-season training base in Hobsons Bay for the first time in our history.” As reported by Star Weekly last July, several Williamstown football clubs said they would have to start turning away players as they didn’t have facilities to cope with growing numbers. Seaworks revamp looking good By Goya Dmytryshchak Work is under way on a $3 million upgrade to Williamstown’s Seaworks maritime precinct. Seaworks, Hobsons Bay’s second-biggest visitor attraction after Scienceworks, draws more than 100,000 people a year to its events. It is home to the Seaworks Foundation, two commercial piers, a boatbuilder, commercial ferry operators, Melbourne Seaplanes, a maritime museum and the Sea Shepherd fleet. As well as receiving tall ships from around the world and hosting festivals and events, the site is a popular filming location for TV shows and movies.

Chief executive Pauline Hobbs said the $3 million redevelopment of the former Melbourne Harbour Trust workshop – known as the big shed – was the first stage of the plan. She said the work, which includes a new facade on Nelson Place and large glass panels at the rear, would enhance community enjoyment of Seaworks, including the great city views. It will also activate an upstairs space for potential uses including functions, gallery space and performing arts. “We’re very careful to ensure that we still are very accessible to community groups … so we have a real mix of community and commercial events,” Ms Hobbs said.

“We have different rates as well – so we have a commercial rate and a community rate, so that community groups can still afford to have their events here. “We have the commercial events – like the Jamaican Music Festival, the Beer and Cider Fest, the Out on the Weekend Americana music festival. The BBQ was filmed here. “Then we have community events like the car shows … Rotary have had their Christmas fair here for a few years. We have the Eid festival here.” Pirates Tavern, a licensed venue with live music on Fridays and Sundays, remains open. The big shed is expected to re-open in June.

Finding love in Altona Married at First Sight romantic fever is catching on in Hobsons Bay as an Altona restaurant introduces its first Singles Mingle night in May. The marriage between the reality television show’s fan favourites John Robertson and Melissa Walsh has put a spotlight on Altona. A sticking point seems to be whether John is willing to move from the Altona area where everything he loves is within a five-minute drive. That includes Mosaic restaurant in Pier Street, which is holding its first night just for singles on May 11. Owner Donna Sagor said the night would have a “really relaxed atmosphere”. “That’s what I want people to feel when they walk in,” she said. “I’m hoping that I’m going to create a beautiful relaxed atmosphere so when

everyone walks into the beer garden, they’re just going to feel the warmth and how chilled out it is. “It’s going to be just a nice classy evening in the beer garden, people having canapes and champagne.” The lower age limit is 28 and there’s no upper limit. Fire raises safety issues By Benjamin Millar Residents are accusing authorities of being ill-prepared for emergencies at the badly contaminated Maribyrnong Defence Site, in the aftermath of a fire that tore through buildings at the former munitions factory. An out of control blaze at the site just before 1pm last Wednesday spread thick smoke and ash across the surrounding area as dozens of firefighters worked to contain a grassfire that spread to a disused building off Cordite Road.

Water-bombing helicopters joined the battle to contain the blaze, along with more than 20 MFB fire appliances. Paramedics called to an address in Maribyrnong at 1.03pm assessed two people at the scene for smoke inhalation. Maribyrnong, Maidstone and Avondale Heights residents were advised to move indoors, close doors and windows, and shut down air-conditioning. But Maribyrnong resident Fulvia Constantinou said the fire revealed how under-prepared authorities were to deal with emergencies at the site. Her efforts to ascertain the potential health impacts of the fire have also been met with frustration. Ms Constantinou, who lives directly across from the site, said the MFB, EPA, Department of Defence and Maribyrnong council had all failed to adequately communicate or provide suitable assurances the smoke from the fire

and ash left in backyards and houses was not dangerous. “No one is taking responsibility for this,” she said. “There doesn’t appear to have been a fire management plan in place – the MFB had to wait for over half an hour to access the building.” Ms Constantinou said the fire sparked a traffic nightmare that highlighted how redevelopment the site would exacerbate traffic in the area.

EPA spokesman John Rees said the fire had been deemed to be of “low risk” to health. “Officers jointly evaluated the smoke from the Maribyrnong fire, with particular regard to possible human health issues, and determined that there was low risk to health.” A Department of Defence spokeswoman said Defence is investigating the cause of the fire and assessing damage to the property. “Defence will not provide further comment until those examinations are complete.”

Hobsons Bay schoolchildren last week experienced a taste of Japanese culture when students from Nagoya Women’s University visited local primary schools and kindergartens. About 30 women studying to become teachers or early childhood educators were hosted by families for a fortnight. Newport Gardens Primary School was one of the schools to hold a Japanese cultural day. Japanese teacher Daniel Jerabek said there was a costume parade in the morning, a sushi lunch and the whole school was involved in a taiko drumming performance. “Every year we host a Japanese Culture Day where 11 Japanese students from Nagoya Women’s University stay with families from our school and host activities,” he said. Labor’s plan to hold the west The Labor Party has spent the past three years running the state. But come November, will it be re-elected? Charlene Macaulay sits down with Premier Daniel Andrews to find out about his plans for the western suburbs. What do you consider to be the biggest issues facing the western and northern suburbs, and what will you do to address those issues if re-elected?

many residents fear that the west has missed out on much-needed funding because they do not live in marginal seats. What do you say to this?

I think the biggest issue in the western and northern suburbs, and indeed right across the state, is jobs. Without employment, everything else in life gets really hard. That’s why we’ve worked so hard every single month that we’ve been in office to create the best part of 330,000 jobs. Whether it’s through our own infrastructure projects – the West Gate Tunnel, the City-Tulla widening project … the $1.8 billion in [Wyndham] roads, school projects like this one [$3.3 million for a new kindergarten built between Sunbury Heights Primary and Sunbury Downs College], hospital projects – there’s a long, long list. They all contribute to the number of people that are in work and they help to set the tone and set some momentum up for us. We’re not without our challenges, of course, and that’s why we’ll keep investing in more schools, kinders, as well as continuing to repair the damage that was done to our TAFE system, continuing that infrastructure, road and rail.

It is true to say that over the years we have often been in the receipt of very strong support in the west of Melbourne and north of Melbourne. and I’m very grateful for that. To suggest, however, that we’ve not invested, or that somehow we’ve not sought to govern for every single Victorian is simply wrong. I’ve visited Sunshine Hospital many, many, many times and I’m happy and proud to have been closely associated with rebuilding large parts of that hospital … the Joan Kirner Hospital for Women and Children will open later on this year. Only a Labor government builds hospitals – simple as that. The budget will have more to say about supporting better health outcomes in the west. We also shouldn’t forget Footscray Hospital. There was some money in the budget last year and a whole lot of very intensive planning has gone on. I’ve lost count of the number of schools I’ve visited out in the western suburbs that are either completed or nearing completion. Of course, the West Gate Tunnel … a second river crossing giving everyone in the west an

option and a choice that they’ve never, ever had. I completely reject the notion that we have not invested in the western suburbs and the northern suburbs. That’s simply wrong. I can absolutely commit to all of your readers that we’ll continue to support the north and the west in lots of different ways – everything from kinders to TAFE, from community health to acute care, roads, rail jobs. And we’ll continue to give Graham Ashton, the chief commissioner, more resources than he has ever had so we can deploy additional police to fight crime and to keep our Victorian community safe.

How can the state government use planning controls to ensure adequate infrastructure will be provided as part of the redevelopment and how can the public be confident the site will be fully remediated?

Are those numbers for specialist units, or general duties? I think that includes CIU [crime investigation units] and stuff like that. I always find it interesting that I’m asked questions about serious crime, and then people don’t count those who investigate serious crime as being part of a localised response. The way we have always operated is to give the chief commissioner the recruits he’s asked

Wyndham has less police on the beat now than it did in September, 2015, despite its soaring population. In light of all the youth crime occurring around Wyndham in the past 12 months, will the state government consider further boosting police numbers? I don’t know about that [the drop in police numbers]. I’m told there is more than 100 new police for the Westgate and Brimbank divisions – 41 for Westgate, 63 for Brimbank.

for. Where they go, that’s entirely a matter for him, as it should be. The Victorian Planning Authority is creating a planning framework for the Maribyrnong defence site. Do you think the commonwealth has erred in not selling the site to Development Victoria?

I would have much preferred to have been involved in a partnership with the commonwealth government. We always stand ready to work co-operatively to get the best outcome – not just for the coffers of any government, but for the local community, both for those who live around that site now and those who will live

The planning of the site will be ultimately up to us, and there will be local community involvement as well – so council, state government, community involvement. I don’t think it will be easy – a site of that complexity is not easy, and a site of that significance. But we’d certainly be committed to doing that, with the commonwealth government or any private sector owner, to get the best outcome for future residents and never forgetting those who currently border that site. Hobsons Bay council will be allocated $5 million in the next state budget under the West Gate Tunnel project for local capital works projects. What other councils were offered similar packages? Certainly Hobsons Bay, who have a local interface, if you like, in terms of the project, they’re receiving some strong support. I think Minister [Luke] Donnellan made some other announcements quite recently. There were three councils that were impacted by the project [Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Melbourne]. I think they got what they sought, both from a redesign point of view, truck bans and then there was some public works. ■ Read

Neighbourhood House cash call By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council has thrown its support behind a campaign to push the state government to fulfil its election promise to boost Neighbourhood House funding. Maribyrnong’s five Neighbourhood Houses are among those across the state to effectively have their funding frozen, despite a surge in demand for their services. Campaigners are highlighting the fact that despite almost 200,000 Victorians accessing Neighbourhood Houses every week, the

majority receive weekly co-ordination funding for 25 hours or less. Victorian Neighbourhood Houses deliver programs and activities addressing issues including unemployment, childcare, family violence and disengaged youth. Neighbourhood House Victoria acting chief executive Claire Corbett said the current government committed to support Neighbourhood Houses in the 2014 ALP election platform, but three years later had failed to deliver. She said some Neighbourhood Houses were

at risk of closure if no funding increase was forthcoming. Helen Rodd, who sits on the West Footscray Neighbourhood House committee and the peak body’s advisory group, said each neighbourhood house responded to its local community’s needs with targeted courses and programs. She said the West Footscray house had a particular focus on food security and social disconnection. “The funding is completely inadequate,” she said. “We are in a growth area and have had

a freeze on funding that has continued since 2012. “When the government came in almost four years ago, they promised to support Neighbourhood Houses and that hasn’t happened.” Maribyrnong councillors recently voted to write to Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos seeking an end to the funding freeze. Ms Mikakos said the government supported Neighbourhood Houses through ongoing funding, including more than $30 million in 2017-18.

Bound by shared stories The final few steps of an epic fundraiser fell in Footscray on Friday when Cassie Cohen and Jackson Bursill crossed the finish line of their 4000-kilometre jogging journey. The pair had set out from Cooktown exactly 89 days earlier, covering close to a marathon distance every morning before meeting with refugees and migrants in communities along the way to hear and then share their stories. The Bounding Plains to Share run served as a fundraiser for the Footscray-based Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, which greeted the dynamic duo with a breakfast at the finish line and accepted a donation of more than $12,000. Ms Cohen said the pair met some extraordinary individuals who inspired them to keep the run alive, including Bashir, a 22-year-old commerce student at ANU. “When he was 14 years old, both of his parents were killed in Afghanistan … Bashir made his way to Australia alone, and managed

to achieve great year 12 results despite having no family support,” she said. Through the run, Cohen and Bursill used social media to share a new story each day about the people they met along the way. Their goal was to highlight the positive success stories of refugees and migrants. “We’ve realised that most people who hold strong views against multiculturalism simply haven’t been exposed to many people from different backgrounds,” Mr Bursill said. ASRC chief executive Kon Karapanagiotidis said he had kept watch on the lengthy journey and been impressed by their strength. “It’s actually hard to fathom just how far they’ve run and how many people they’ve come into contact with along the way,” he said. MY PLACE Botanical artist Stefan Gevers, who lives in Newport and runs watercolour art classes from his Spotswood studio, speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

Before we moved into Hobsons Bay over 15 years ago, we used to come and visit to enjoy the beach, which was the closest for us while living in Brunswick at the time. We weren’t able to buy a home over in the north but Newport was just affordable for us. We have never looked back and still love living there. What do you like about Newport/Spotswood? We have known the area for a while and have seen it change enormously in last five years. It now has a great offering of local shops and cafes. It’s great to see lots of diversity in visitors as well, and families enjoying the local shops. What would you change? As with most suburbs in Hobsons Bay, Newport and Spotswood are close to the bay, which offers fantastic bike trails. The problem though is access to those bike trails and the bicycle infrastructure, which I think is very poor and unsafe and can be improved greatly. Perhaps because I grew up in the Netherlands I know it can be done, but the priority here seems to be for cars and trucks. There should be, and there can be, a better balance between road users. What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery? I have many and visit the locals regularly but

I can’t go past Two Birds brewery without stopping for a beer. It’s just a great place to meet, enjoy art, food and drinks. The new Hudsons Road wine bar next to our studio has made it hard sometimes to make a choice! Where are your favourite local places to go to draw or paint? I am really a studio artist and don’t paint plein air very often but I get great inspiration in particular from Newport Lakes, which I visit almost daily with the dog. It is the only place locally that feels like you’re in the bush. Great birdlife and fantastic variety of trees and plants. The bike trail along the water all the way to Altona Meadows would be my second favourite, especially the old race horse track in Williamstown North. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you? I left The Netherlands in 1993 to live and work in New Zealand for three months only. Twenty five years later and I am still here in this part of the world and became an Australian citizen a few years ago. My plan wasn’t to immigrate but I just happen to love it here and stayed. For my road trips these days, I follow the same instinct and never plan exactly where to go. I just leave and not knowing were I will end up that day gives me a great sense of freedom.

he theme of this year’s Catholic Education Week is inspired by a speech given by Pope Francis at World Youth Day in 2016 in which he called on young people and the church to “open new horizons for spreading joy”. We have no desire to conquer hatred with more hatred, violence with more violence, terror with more terror. We are here today because the Lord has called us together. “Our response to a world at war has a name: its name is fraternity, its name is brotherhood, its name is communion, its name is family. “We celebrate the fact that coming from different cultures, we have come together to pray. “Let our best word, our best argument, be our unity in prayer. The Clubbers finished a mere 0.30 points above second-placed Seddon, who stormed into the finals on a six-game winning streak, including a huge outright win over Tullamarine on the road at Dineen Reserve on Saturday. Yarraville Club did what it needed to do to secure the all-important top ranking, beating Spotswood by 76 runs at Walker Oval. The Clubbers were set a victory target of 208, which they achieved six down. Just as important for the Clubbers was to continue to bat strongly to 8-283, which provided enough additional points to finish above Seddon. Seddon go into the finals full of confidence, having been unbeaten since the middle of December.

The Dockers dismantled Tullamarine, bowling the hosts out for 52 and 134, while posting 205 of their own. Yarraville Club will face Keilor in its semi-final, while Seddon will meet Doutta Stars. In north west division, Druids swooped on top spot on the final day after an outright win over Aberfeldie at Shorten Reserve. Maribyrnong Sports Academy athletic team has returned from the Simplot games in the US well pleased with the efforts of the six competitors who made the trek to Pocatello, Idaho. Five finalists and a silver and bronze medal shows the effort was very worthwhile. Team captain Jamieson Battistella won bronze in the high jump and Angus Wood picked up silver in the long jump. The Battistella name is well known in local footy circles, with Jamieson’s father David a premiership coach at North Footscray. David was team coach for the US trip, filling in for Darren Clarke, who was on national selection duties on the Gold Coast. Angus is the brother of Bulldogs captain Easton. Their dad, Phil, was a Commonwealth Games long jumper for New Zealand. The other members of the team were Alison Williams, Kelera Ratu, Ella Nickolaus and Bianca Puglisi.

college is also celebrating the achievements of Celeste Mucci, who completed VCE last year and will represent Australia at next month’s Commonwealth Games in the heptathlon. The school has two former students (Celeste and Gronya Somerville) and four current academy coaches involved in the games on the Gold Coast. The facilities at Maribyrnong are the envy of many schools, but it requires the right people in place to achieve results and the school continues to produce fine athletes in a variety of sports.

Wolves lick their wounds By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown Wolves were left with a hollow feeling after missing promotion to Baseball Victoria summer league division 1. The Wolves made a hasty exit from the division 2 finals, going down 2-0 to Preston Pirates in a best-of-three semi-final series. Game one was the dagger for the Wolves, losing 3-2 in a game they could, and probably should, have won. There was no coming back from that disappointment for the Wolves, who went down 9-1 in game two. Wolves catcher and coach Jarryd Rogers rued the missed opportunity of game one and over-aggressive base running. “We could’ve easily won game one, which would’ve changed the whole series,” he said. “It was a bit of a downer that they really came out to play in game two, hit really well and we didn’t hit so good. They threw their two best pitchers at us and they threw really well.”

Williamstown will rue its return of just three runs across the two games. The Wolves’ base running in game one was costly. “We got a lot of runners on base, but they got thrown out on base, which is a big no-no,” Rogers said. “It happened four, maybe five times, where we had runners on base and they got thrown out by the catcher or a double play that shouldn’t have happened. “We encourage our players to take it on and it usually works out. To their credit, the Preston catcher is phenomenal defensively and exploited aggressive base running that we’d normally get away with.” While the Williamstown offence was not up to scratch in the series, Rogers was pleased with the team’s pitching and defence. He praised tireless work of import starting pitcher Jonathan Mottay in the play-offs and across the season. “He’s been our most dominant player,” Rogers said. “It’s not just that he throws well, he

can throw well for a really long time … seven or eight innings a game.” Mottay threw 10 innings in game one and four innings in game two. Daniel Chircop offered some relief in game two, but neither had the run support to be able to carve out a victory. Williamstown will be hard at work in the off season trying to lure Mottay back to the club for next summer. The Wolves will also examine why they could not achieve their goal of promotion to division 1. “At the start of the year, we were fairly confident that we were going to get promoted this year,” Rogers said. “We did improve as a club, with hitting and defence especially, as well as culture at training and off the field. “It was just unfortunate that two teams can go up and the top two teams this year were definitely Preston and Berwick. “Next year, if we improve again, I’ve got no doubt we’ll make it into division 1.”

will miss the sub-district cricket finals after a forgettable last two weeks of the season. Hoppers Crossing failed to pull off a fairytale finish, so it will also be packing the whites away. Spotswood missed out in the VTCA, failing to knock over the premiership favourite, Yarraville Club Cricket Club, in the last round. Good luck to those teams in cricket finals. Balla brothers take on the best from the Philippines Western suburbs boxer Ibrahim Balla will be out to defend his Oceania Featherweight Title on home soil. The 27-year-old will be the headline act on the Westside Rumble event at Grandstar Receptions in Altona this Sunday. “It’s a privilege and an honour to be headlining the night,” Balla said, ahead of a much anticipated main event bout with Philippines challenger Jessie Cris Rosales. “I grew up in the western suburbs and have been sparring around the gyms as well, so I’m just excited to bring boxing back to the western suburbs. “It’s got a fighting culture, there’s a lot of boxing gyms around the west, so it’s a big deal for me and I think it’s going to be a good night.” Balla, who trains at The Gym Yarraville, will be putting the Oceania title belt he earned last October on the line when he steps into the ring. The Plumpton resident enters the bout with

an impressive record of 13 wins and one loss. He is feeling confident heading into the fight. “I’m feeling good about the fight,” Balla said. “It’s my first title defence, but I’m real comfortable and looking forward to the challenge and the opponent. He’s going to try and take away my belt, but I can tell you it’s not leaving these shores.” Rosales is no slouch in the ring. The 26-year-old arrives with a impressive record of 21 wins, one loss and a draw. It will be Balla’s toughest test to date, but he is confident of putting on a show for his home fans and coming away with the spoils. “He’s going to bring it on the night, which is what I want and what the fans want to see,” Balla said. “He’s definitely coming to win. “I’ve watched a bit of footage of my opponent and I think I cover him in every area of the boxing game.

“I’m faster, stronger, I’ve got better skills, so I’ve got to put that into play and focus on my game plan on the night and capitalise.” Balla, who grew up in Hoppers Crossing, will have a vocal crowd in his corner. He says the tight confines of Grandstar Receptions will make for an intimidating atmosphere for Rosales. “It’s good for the public because wherever you’re sitting, you’re going to get a good view of the fight,” he said. “I think it will be a little bit intimidating for him walking into the arena when I’ve got a lot of people supporting me from the west.” Balla is proud to be able to share the stage with his brother Qamil. The A’s will take some hot form into the finals after demolishing local rivals YarravilleFootscray 97-57 at Francis Street on Saturday. Dane McKinnon, Brett Foley and Nathan Wilson all finished up for the A’s in a three rinks to one victory. Yarraville-Footscray finished third-last on the ladder to avoid relegation.

By Lance Jenkinson When the dust settled on an absorbing Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association regular season on Saturday, Williamstown finished on top of the pile for the second year running and will head into the finals as the team to beat. While it was a game of musical chairs for top spot all summer, Seagulls veteran all-rounder Craig Sheedy is not surprised that his team is the one to have claimed the No. 1 final ranking because of the tremendous effort that has gone into the season from the players and team leaders. “We’ve trained our bums off all year,” Sheedy said. “[Captain-coach] Dale [McDonald] has been really good and it’s been really organised. “We feel like we’ve deserved what’s come our way.” Only half of the job is done for Williamstown – as it well knows. The Seagulls were minor premiers last summer, but suffered a shock semi-final exit to local rivals Altona. “It all starts again now,” Sheedy said. “You’ve got to reset and start because the pressure gets a lot bigger in the finals. “You don’t want to blow it after all the hard work you’ve put in all year and let it slip right at the end.” Williamstown rounded out the regular season with a dominating 94-run win over Hoppers Crossing in a one-day game on Saturday. The Seagulls claimed a home qualifying final to be played this weekend against Plenty Valley at the Williamstown Cricket Ground and the bonus of a finals double chance. “It was good to finish on top and have a home final next week,” Sheedy said. Williamstown piled on 6-233 off its 45 overs. Brent McMinn was the centrepiece for the Seagulls with 71, while Sheedy finished with 48 not out. “He’s got all the shots,” Sheedy said of McMinn. “He can pull, cut, drive – it’s just batting time for him and if he does that he’s going to get a huge score for us.” After a fast start, Hoppers Crossing’s run rate was reeled in by some quality Williamstown bowling and the visitors were all out for 139. Medium pacer Mitchell Streiff (4-40) and paceman Jarrod Flood-Bauce (3-33) did most of the damage for the Seagulls. “They just bowled stump to stump and made it hard for them to hit across the line,” Sheedy said. “They just put the ball in an area and just kept asking questions.” Meanwhile, Yarraville claimed a five-wicket victory over Taylors Lakes to secure fifth spot in the finals. The Eagles will hit the road to take on Melton in a cut-throat semi-final at MacPherson Park. Altona managed a two-wicket win over Plenty Valley on the final day, but had to settle for an eighth-placed finish.

Western Bulldogs are one win away from their first AFL Women’s grand final appearance. The Bulldogs maintained a game and percentage break over the rest of the competition with an eight-point win over Collingwood at Ted Summerton Reserve in Moe on Sunday. Ellie Blackburn was outstanding for the Bulldogs, withstanding some physical heat to register 17 disposals, two marks and a goal, while Kirsty Lamb’s pressure around the ball, including 10 disposals and seven tackles, was important.
