However, Real Estate Institute of Victoria chief executive Gil King argued the reforms would significantly imbalance the market in favour of tenants at the expense of “mum and dad” investors. “The Andrews government has been short-sighted in introducing these reforms which will decimate the private rental market, ultimately driving up rents and reducing the supply of rental properties at a time of unprecedented population growth,” he said. Consumer affairs minister Marlene Kairouz said more people were renting than ever before and for longer. “These changes will crack down on rental bidding, make it easier and faster for renters
to get their bond back, and will better hold landlords and agents to account for their actions,” she said. Footscray renter Margaret Dunleavy said the reforms were well overdue and a welcome recognition of the difficulties faced by tenants. “The most important thing is the ability to make a space your own,” she said. Ms Dunleavy said finding a tenancy that would permit her two greyhounds had been challenging and she had been disheartened by the number of articles about finding a home that recommended offering to pay more than the advertised rate. “I was chilled to my blood to be told to have a war with other renters.”

Renters and tenants rights groups have welcomed state government reforms aimed at rebalancing the housing ledger with landlords. The government announced a package of reforms on Sunday that included a cap on rental bonds, a crackdown on rental bidding, a limit on rent increases to once a year and an end to “no specified reason” evictions. Victoria’s 1.5 million renters will also have the right to keep pets and make minor modifications such as installing picture hooks. Other changes include establishing a landlord and estate agent blacklist and a new Commissioner for Residential Tenancies.
Tenants Victoria said the package was a great start, but the Real Estate Institute of Victoria argued it swung the pendulum too far the other way. The reforms come as census data shows the number of households renting in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong is growing at almost three times the rate of new owner occupiers. Tenants Victoria chief executive Mark O’Brien said it is virtually impossible for tenants to feel secure in their homes when they can be evicted without proper reason. “The Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) is 20 years old and the holes are showing. Williamstown Town Hall forecourt and Lenore Crescent The car park and forecourt works are progressing well. The car park, vehicle crossings and footpath works along Ferguson Street are now complete. Tree planting in Seabrook Thirty trees have been planted at Homestead Reserve, Seabrook as part of our upgrades to open spaces in Hobsons Bay. In the coming years these trees will significantly improve the appearance of this reserve, making it more inviting and providing valuable shade for the community. The main two species planted are the red ironbark (Eucalyptus sideroxylon) and the beautiful Sydney red gum (Angophora costata).
HD Graham Reserve Base preparation for the laying of the asphalt is now complete. The construction of the bus bay along Andrew Park Drive is under way along with the construction of the pedestrian paths around the perimeter of the car
park. These works are expected to be completed by the end of October.

Four candidates make their nominations public Four candidates have nominated for Labor preselection to replace Wade Noonan in the state seat of Williamstown. His former long-time advisor Fiona Ward will vie for the coveted seat against Maurice Blackburn lawyer Brendan Johnson, treasury staffer Jesse Overton-Skinner and Level Crossing Removal Authority director Melissa Horne. Victorian ALP assistant state secretary Kosmos Samaras said there would be a rank and file internal election of Williamstown branch members on October 22 and 23, with the outcome known on November 15. Ms Ward, 38, a married mother of two and
Newport resident, also previously worked as electorate officer for Nicola Roxon. She declined to comment except to confirm her nomination. Mr Johnson, 44, a married father of four and Yarraville resident for 16 years, is a senior associate at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, heading the WorkCover team at Sunshine. “I’m committed to creating opportunities for underprivileged communities in the west to access pathways to employment, improving mental health resources and our educational system, creating better access to childcare services and sporting facilities, and providing better road infrastructure and public transport services,” he said.
An advisor to treasurer Tim Pallas, Ms Overton-Skinner, 29, said she grew up in Yarraville where she currently lives. “I’m a local and see the opportunities and challenges we face in the inner west every day,” she said. “We’re a community people want to be a part of, but improving housing affordability, continuing to invest in education and childcare and more transport infrastructure are essential to support our community.” Ms Horne, who also heads the SKY High lobby group for a new inner west secondary school, declined to comment. Race is on for prized seat
By Benjamin Millar and Goya Dmytryshchak Melbourne’s inner-west faces a complete changing of the guard in state politics, with Wade Noonan announcing his retirement. The Williamstown MP announced last Wednesday he would be leaving Parliament at the November, 2018, election, his news coming less than a fortnight after Footscray MP Marsha Thomson declared she would be standing down. Mr Noonan said after 10 years in public life, he was satisfied he had achieved everything he had set out to do. “If I think about the early days … a couple of outcomes really stand out for me – firstly, the saving of the Yarraville Community Centre in Francis Street,” Mr Noonan said. “The enjoyment that the community got out of that moment wasn’t lost on me … it was really quite critical in terms of helping me understand what’s possible when you set your mind to something and something is driven by the community.” The second early win he recalled was helping secure $3 million for Williamstown Football Club in the 2008 budget – his first. Mr Noonan stood with the community, at the risk of seeming to antagonise his own government, in fighting high-rise development on the Port Phillip Woollen Mill site in Williamstown. “I remember strongly what [former premier] Joan Kirner said to me at the time … ‘We’re not anti-development in Williamstown, we’re anti-inappropriate development’,” he said. The father of two boys, aged 10 and 12, took three months leave in February, 2016, when he was police minister, to deal with his exposure to great “human misery and suffering”. He said the break had made him stronger and wasn’t a factor in his decision to leave Parliament. “Your kids start to grow up and you want to be more present in their life,” he said.

A three-way contest will decide the person almost certain to become the next state member for Footscray. Corporate communications specialist Katie Hall is looming as the candidate to beat in ALP preselection, as Maribyrnong deputy mayor Sarah Carter and former councillor Michael Clarke also enter the fray. Factional players are hammering out deals over who will have inside running in the plum safe seats of Footscray, Williamstown and Tarneit when they are vacated at next year’s election. Ms Hall was reportedly set to challenge sitting member Marsha Thomson, who has since stemmed any likelihood of public bloodshed by announcing her retirement. The Footscray local has the backing of former Andrews government minister Adem Somyurek, a key right faction powerbroker who can deliver a large block of support. Mr Clarke, who served on council from 2005 to 2016, said he was a “shovel ready” candidate ready to rocket straight to the front bench. Cr Carter, a sitting councillor since 2008, confirmed she was in the race but declined to comment further. Ms Hall could not be reached for comment. ALP branch members will vote on preselection on the October 21-22 weekend ahead of a further vote by the party’s state office. The result will be known by November 15, placing the winner in the box seat to retain Footscray at the next election. The seat is held by the ALP with a 16 per cent margin. Benjamin Millar

Parents fight for YMCA program By Benjamin Millar Families have reacted with shock and dismay at a YMCA decision to scrap school holiday programs at RecWest Footscray. Maria Kentley said her son and daughter were among a number of children and parents deeply disappointed at the sudden axing. Ms Kentley has collected more than 50 signatures on a petition calling on the YMCA to reconsider its position, but she isn’t confident of a positive outcome.
“We were in shock when we read the email saying this would be the last program,” she said of the move that came as the most recent school holidays finished. “It’s just such an amazing program … I heard some parents were crying, it was devastating for everybody.” Ms Kentley said she has been so impressed by the program she happily travelled from Wyndham Vale to Footscray so her children could attend. “My kids would really look forward to the school holidays,” she said. “All the kids know
each other and the staff call them all by their names. “They’re not just numbers. It’s like a family. The staff are brilliant and everything is perfect, I’m heartbroken to see this.” RecWest Footscray centre manager Gerald Dixon confirmed via a statement that YMCA Victoria would no longer be running the school holiday program at Footscray. “After a review of the program performance, YMCA reached the difficult decision that it is no longer feasible to operate this service due
to declining participation numbers,” he said. “YMCA Victoria would encourage parents to visit the My Child website or to call the Child Care Access Hotline on 1800 670 305 for information about alternative school holiday programs operated locally.” Ms Kentley said she was surprised by any suggestions a shortage of numbers were behind the demise of the program and called on the YMCA to reconsider its stance. “No parents were contacted before this – we were all blindsided,” she said.
Collection a class above People will be able to look up their old class photos from Altona High School, which later became Altona Secondary College, in an exhibition culminating from almost a decade of painstaking research. Altona Laverton Historical Society member Judith Kirkman said more than 950 class photos – with names of students – were now on display at Altona Homestead. Between 2005 and 2013, the late Graham Griffiths collected photographs, year books and other memorabilia for every year since 1959, when the school started at four campuses – a Newport church hall and Altona’s tennis club, scout hall and Baptist church. Ms Kirkman and other former students also rescued honour boards, pennants, trophies and other items from the school before it was demolished. “Around Altona, it doesn’t matter what shop you go into … there’s always someone who’s an ex student,” she said.
Mr Griffiths, who died in February, also created a spreadsheet with names to go with each photo and people can search for names in digital form. This resulted in a surprise find for Ms Kirkman. “Because my maiden name was Forbes, I thumbed in ‘Forbes’ to see what would come out and I found a whole stack of photos of Avis Forbes, who was a 1959er. “She was my cousin and she was killed in Cyclone Tracy in Darwin. “I found her in three school photos, I found her in the school magazine because she’d put in a poem, and I also found out that she was a member of the softball team.” Altona Homestead is open Tuesdays from 11am-2pm, Saturdays from 10am-12pm (except for the first Saturday of the month) and on the first Sunday of the month from 11am-3pm. When contacted by Star Weekly, a representative of Prizac refused to comment other than to say he would “make an announcement at the appropriate time”. Residents Against Inappropriate Development in Maribyrnong spokesman Enzo DeFazio said the project was a “massive overdevelopment”, given the planning scheme for the Edgewater Neighbourhood Activity Centre recommends a height of three storeys. He said a parking shortfall would place more pressure on already strained street parking. “What is being proposed is more in line with a Major Activity Centre such as Highpoint and central Footscray,” he said. Maribyrnong deputy mayor and ward councillor Sarah Carter said she has asked for a full briefing on the proposal and has flagged “calling it in” so councillors, rather than council staff, have the final say.

A multi-storey hotel and apartment complex flagged for the site of the half-built Club Edgewater project could be “called in” for a decision by Maribyrnong councillors. The trouble-plagued $30 million club project, which was to include a gaming lounge with 70 gaming machines, up to 40 hotel rooms and 12 double-storey residential apartments, was abandoned in 2015 when Western Bulldogs and developer Prizac parted ways after an acrimonious falling out. Star Weekly has been told a new application has been lodged for 31 Edgewater Boulevard, behind Maribyrnong Aldi, for a multi-storey residential, hotel and commercial development. New plans were lodged with the council in May, but the application has not been revealed until now. Maribyrnong council planning services director Nigel Higgins said the proposal was not required to be advertised as it is “generally consistent” with the approved development plan for the overall Edgewater Estate. The proponents last year tried to leverage opposition to poker machines into support for doubling the building’s height to incorporate 70 hotel apartments, 133 residential apartments and a 200-seat rooftop restaurant. However, the Western Bulldogs have since sold all gaming entitlements associated with the approved development. Planning approval for the club is due to expire in January. Two budding Footscray filmmakers are basking in the glory of winning first prize in the secondary school category at the Sunshine Short Film Festival. Orlando Catoggio and Samuel Roberg, both 13, claimed top honours with Sunshine Bones, an action-packed film they wrote, directed, acted in and edited, as well as writing and performing the music. The friends, year 8 students at Footscray City College, beat out much older contenders to take the prize. Orlando’s passion for filmmaking and visual effects has spurred him to enter the film festival every year since he was nine. “When I was about four years old, I started
doing small animation videos with my dad,” he said. Sunshine Bones traces the creepy encounters experienced as two friends fight for their lives in an abandoned school. Samuel said the pair spent months creating the short film, injecting as much humour as they could into a story that is in the Ghostbusters vein. “It was pretty exciting to win this year,” Samuel said. The boys are eagerly awaiting an announcement about the theme for next year’s festival so they can get cracking on a new entry.

Residents fled a unit after it caught fire in Montgomery Street, Maidstone, about 6.30am on Monday. The fire spread to another unit though the roof space. But the council says it takes two years to prune the municipality’s 44,000 street trees so work must continue year-round. The council said contractors try not to directly disturb animal nests.

Jail for Cambodia heroin haul By Benjamin Millar A Maidstone woman has been jailed for more than five years after being convicted of smuggling more than three kilograms of heroin into Australia in a hammock to help pay off gambling debts. Hai Ngoc Thi Le, 53, was sentenced to eight and a half years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of five and a half years, of which she has already served 504 days. Le, who arrived in Australia from Vietnam as a refugee in 1996, last month entered a guilty
plea on one charge of importing a commercial quantity of heroin. The County Court heard that Le had travelled to Cambodia in April, 2016, returning to Australia in May, 2016. A search of her baggage uncovered a hammock with metal poles containing the equivalent of 3.2 kilograms of pure heroin with a potential street value of $6.9 million. Le initially claimed she went to Cambodia for a holiday and knew nothing about the heroin, but later entered a guilty plea. The court was told investigators had found

she had lost $36,772 to a casino earlier in 2016. She was approached with an offer of $20,000 to be involved in the importation of heroin into Australia. In sentencing Le, judge Christopher Ryan noted Le’s lawyer had argued she should be sentenced as a courier.
“Your gambling … is in no way mitigating of your conduct,” Judge Ryan said. “Whilst he did not use this word, the nub of his submission was that your conduct could generally be described as amateurish. Even if this were so, it does not detract from the seriousness of your offending.” Judge Ryan said Le’s sentence must act to deter others from committing similar crimes. “But for your plea of guilty, I would have sentenced you to 12 years’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of eight years’ imprisonment,” he said.

‘Broken Nose’ now blooming Rose By Goya Dmytryshchak One of Williamstown’s oldest hotels with a colourful past, Rose of Australia, is this week celebrating its 150th anniversary. The hotel in Ferguson Street was established in 1867 by John Morgan who was a member of the borough council, according to the Pubs of Williamstown guide by late local historian Bruce Tait. Councillors often served as magistrates at the local courthouse, and relations became strained after Mr Morgan was fined five pounds by his colleagues for illegal Sunday trading after a police raid on his pub. One of the most eccentric publicans of the hotel was New Zealander Denis Irwin, who took over in 1987 and is thought to have been the first to introduce topless barmaids to Williamstown. He had the hotel’s rose insignia tattooed on his rear, a decision that Mr Tait speculated he must have regretted: “It would always be a permanent reminder of his days at the ‘Broken Nose’, as he now called it. A hotel he labelled as the toughest, roughest pub in Melbourne.” Current publican, former roof tiler Darren Green, took over at the end of 2014. He said the old upstairs residents’ quarters, which used to house some nefarious characters, was rarely used for lodgings these days. Mr Green also changed the hotel’s 7am licence, saying it was no longer necessary to open so early. “The reason why the early opener was on was because when all the factories were running here years ago there was plenty of night shifts,” he said. “You had the Tenix dockyards down here, employed 4000 to 5000 people, so every night there was 1000-odd people knocking off in the

morning. By 7am, you’d have 50 people in here – just the boys having a knock-off beer. “You had the abattoir down the road and the railway yard. It was a massive working town but all the industry’s gone now so there’s no need for that anymore.
“No one wants their beer at eight in the morning.” One thing Mr Green loves about the Rose is that it’s an old-style hotel with character. “I’ve always liked the old pub,” he said. “I walk past the pokies pub to go to the other
pub. I hate that banging in the background and Keno on TV and all that rubbish.” Rose of Australia will celebrate its anniversary on Friday, October 13 with veteran Melbourne rock singer Jimmy Cupples – a finalist on The Voice Australia – performing from 8pm.

Daughters on the move By Benjamin Millar A free health program helping women stay in good shape is kicking off across the west. Daughters of the West is an eight-week program focusing on mental health, nutrition and physical activity, as well as respectful relationships, parenting and financial literacy. Ambassadors of the Western Bulldogs Football Club Community Foundation’s pilot program include Bulldogs’ AFLW players Emma Kearney and Lauren Spark and health professional Roz Richards. Organisers hope to replicate the success of the Sons of the West men’s health program, which has helped hundreds of men improve their health since 2014. Maribyrnong, Wyndham, Melton and Ballarat councils have partnered with the club to deliver the program, which is already at capacity before it even begins this week. Gordon Legal has tipped in $200,000 as the major sponsor. Bulldogs club president Peter Gordon said the club’s commitment to bringing women into the fold was shown through the Bulldogs playing a key role in bringing AFLW to life. “There was a real enthusiasm to create Daughters of the West,” he said. “It’s a big thrill for everyone who’s connected with the club, the foundation in particular, to have arrived at this day.” The state government has also provided funding as part of its $600,000 package to the club’s Community Foundation. Health minister Jill Hennessy said the program will focus on gender equality, physical activity and improving health and wellbeing. “As a passionate Doggies fan, I am proud the Bulldogs are the heart and soul of Melbourne’s west, on and off the field,” she said.
Dogs in a class of their own Victoria University has stepped up its support of the Western Bulldogs by inking an historic five-year partnership deal. The deal, unveiled at the Western Bulldogs Best and Fairest presentation last Wednesday night, is the first time in AFL partnership history a sponsor has backed each of a club’s Australian Football League (AFL), Australian Football League Women’s (AFLW) and Victorian Football League (VFL) teams. VU vice chancellor Peter Dawkins said the partnership includes educational support for players, research projects and opportunities for students. “On the field, VU sports scientists help Western Bulldogs players hone their performance,” he said. “Off the field we support them by providing the most comprehensive range of sport and exercise science facilities in the southern hemisphere.” Western Bulldogs chief executive Gary Kent said the Western Bulldogs and Victoria University have had a strong relationship for more than three decades. “We are excited about what the next five years will hold for us, and the opportunity to build on some of the great initiatives we have undertaken together.” The Victoria University Education Award, announced at the awards night, went to rising AFL star and Bachelor of Business student Tom Campbell, who is working on an education app for players.

Brushing up on health A youth art exhibition and “chat chairs” will be set up in Hobsons Bay to coincide with Mental Health Week. The Leaders of Today (LOT) PROJECT art exhibition, exploring youth mental health, will run at Williamstown library until October 17. LOT spokeswoman Hue Man Dang said the exhibition by artists aged 12-25 was inspired by local filmmaker Patrick Ilagan. “Last year, when the PROJECT film festival ran, the winner of the people’s choice award had the theme of suicide in their video,” Ms Dang said. “So, this year, LOT partnered with Patrick to create a platform where young people can talk and use a creative medium to express their experiences of mental health.
“We wanted young people to express what they feel about mental health and their experiences of it because the reality is, it’s such a taboo topic and some people just aren’t willing to talk about it.” Altona’s Joel Gallery is hosting a week-long mental health program from October 13-19, which includes creative art activities, information on mental health resources and the “chat chair” where people can share their story with someone. Mum on the run to help By Goya Dmytryshchak A Spotswood mother who started running while grieving the loss of her stillborn child is now hoping to inspire others with her story. Dolly Thunders, 43, struggled with depression after losing her 25-week premature baby and two high-risk pregnancies. “I had a stillbirth, Ella, and was heartbroken,” she said. “Shortly afterwards, I was fortunate to fall pregnant again. However, it was a high-risk pregnancy and I had to spend six months on the couch. “Then when my first child was one, I fell pregnant again … and spent a further six months on the couch. “By this stage I was still grieving and had put on half my body weight: from 50 kilograms to 76 and was not shifting the weight.” Ms Thunders said she decided to take up running but was so ashamed she ran at 11pm so no one could see her, at first just to the end of the street and back. “By this time, I had been in a black cloud for three years,” she said. “Then when I was on a run, I thought, I am going to run a marathon. If I can run a block, then go to 10 kilometres, I can achieve a marathon. “Distance running is a mind set. It is physically, mentally and spiritually challenging and incredibly rewarding. It was great therapy for me and a brilliant form of meditation.” On Sunday, October 15, Ms Thunders will run the full 42.195 kilometre Medibank Melbourne Marathon. She is not fundraising but hopes to inspire people to be kind to animals and go vegetarian or vegan for a day. For more information and to register, visit melbournemarathon.com.au

Hobsons Bay sports review Hobsons Bay community members have until the end of this month to have their say on two draft council policies that will shape the development of sport and recreational assets. The policies will determine the council’s financial and in-kind contribution and occupancy agreements for use of local facilities. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, local football clubs have said they would have to start turning away players due to a lack of facilities able to cope with growing numbers entering the sport. Also as reported, plans have fallen through for a new sports centre at Williamstown North. Mayor Sandra Wilson said Hobsons Bay had 35 sports reserves with 50 pavilions, 81 sports grounds and 48 hard courts that were used by more than 80 local clubs. “There are constraints on what council can spend, so this is about working smarter in how we invest in future facilities,” she said. “It’s about getting the best possible return in terms of sporting and recreational uses for our community.” The draft policies are the Capital development of sport and recreation facilities policy and the Sport and recreation facilities – licence, lease and hire sport and agreements policy. Tree hacking a ‘disgraceful’ act By Goya Dmytryshchak Tree vandalism and graffiti around Skeleton Creek at Altona Meadows has prompted calls for CCTV in the area. Two Carinza Reserve trees were hacked with an axe around grand final weekend, angering members of environment group Friends of Skeleton Creek. Vice-president John Dawes said volunteers from his group had worked with Hobsons Bay council and Melbourne Water to transform the once-barren reserve by planting native trees and shrubs.
He said the Rotary Club of Laverton Point Cook had donated about $25,000 and worked with the council to build a picnic shelter and playground next to the location of the vandalised trees. “It’s just a wanton and disgraceful act of tree vandalism with no regard to a valuable outdoor community asset for everyone to enjoy, particularly young families,” Mr Dawes said. “Our group spends many volunteer hours in revegetating and rejuvenating the area along our creek, to not only increase the biodiversity, but also for the benefit of the community in enhancing their experience of the creek.
“One of our new interpretive educational signs funded by council … was also sprayed with graffiti a few weeks ago. This is the second time it’s happened. “Maybe CCTV cameras should be put in the area, because I fear this damage may continue to happen, unfortunately.”

Community says thanks Hobsons Bay’s Baha’i community will this month hold a public celebration at Altona Meadows marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of their religion’s founder, the figure known as Bahá’u’lláh. Community member Peter Seery said Bahá’u’lláh’s great vision was of Earth as one country with mankind its citizens. “That includes an inner transformation of people as well as a revitalisation of our society based on principles of justice and respect for all people as equal members of one human family,” he said. He said the Baha’i faith respected all religions. “The Baha’i faith was founded in Iran in 1844 and one of the hallmarks of the Baha’i faith is the unity of mankind,” Mr Seery said. “We believe all these other religions are from God so we don’t have any prejudice.
“We also believe in the equality of men and women and the harmony of religion and science. “We believe that world peace is not only possible but inevitable. “We believe humanity is like an adolescent going through a very turbulent stage. Participant Craig Rowley said the first of two workshops was used to devise a concept for their needlepoint works and to learn the basics of the craft. “Jessie makes it look really easy, but for someone who is sight-challenged it’s not so straightforward,” he said. “I find threading the needle the hardest bit.” Mr Rowley, the chief executive of western suburbs lobby group LeadWest, is stitching together the phrase “We Respect”. He said the phrase appealed for containing both the word respect and the letters of west, as well as offering the opportunity to promote equality by using the colours of the rainbow flag. Mr Rowley has so far spent more than 50 hours on his needlework, snatching any moment he can to add to it. He said the men working on the project had created a Facebook discussion group to share their progress.

MY PLACE Altona North’s Myly Nguyen heads the recently-formed Vietnamese Association in Hobsons Bay. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I arrived in Australia in 1981 and the first thing when I watched the news is the Prince and Princess of Wales officially coming to Altona North to open the Mason community housing commission … I just love the Altona North area and I just said, ‘wow, if the royals come to that area, that must be good’. So, in ’85, when I met my husband and we decided to settle in, I said Altona North is a perfect place. So, we bought the place in ’85, got married in the backyard and have had four children since then.
The whole Paisley Park complex, the whole area: the park and just surroundings, with so much greenery and parks. The school, the church and the whole sports complex. They’re just so awesome. What would you change? I think more places for people to assimilate, like little trade areas, little shops – like we have in Second Avenue, which is only one or two shops. A small strip for a cup of coffee where the locals can come in and catch up.

I came to Australia as a refugee after the war in 1975. My father was in a refugee camp: he was a high army officer. I arrived on my own as a refugee.
It’s just recently established in February this year. We always did volunteer work outside the area but we never actually knew much about Hobsons Bay and we’ve got so much going
on because we’re bordering Newport, Altona, South Kingsville, Yarraville and Williamstown and we just needed to form an association and maybe we can contribute something. For information search for Vietnamese Association in Hobsons Bay on Facebook

Bayside student nails World Skills test Year 11 Bayside P-12 College carpentry student Jack Lee (pictured) has won the Melbourne World Skills regional competition, sponsored by WynBay LLEN. The Melbourne region constructions competition category of World Skills was held at Bayside P-12 College last month. Bayside vocational education and training carpentry teacher Daniel Bonnici says there were 13 carpentry students from around Melbourne in the competition. “The top three competitors are invited to compete in the state finals on October 28, also at Bayside,” Daniel says. The college, now with three campuses, including its Technical Trades Centre at the Paisley campus, is fast building a reputation as one of the more popular trades-focused high schools. It is hosting World Skills for the second year in a row.
Daniel, an official World Skills judge for eight years whose career has included teaching in the VET sector for the past 17 years, started organising Bayside as a host for the 60-year-old World Skills competition soon after arriving at the school. “I’ve been delivering trades education in the west for 15 years,” Daniel says. “The funding re-invested into trades training has been invaluable for the kids and I really enjoy fostering and a mentoring role with the kids.” The top two from the next rounds will have the opportunity to compete against other students from around Australia in the national finals in mid-2018 in Sydney. So it’s time we fought for the men in our lives and raised awareness.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir says to be quick and check out Jack. B Nimble Here’s a new CTS hobby – finding flash food in cafes, especially when it’s way cheaper than in more formal settings, let alone a fine dining context. It goes – sometimes, but not always – with chefs opting out of the rat race of high-falutin’ dining for a more manageable lifestyle. Punters may have to sleuth among the eggs a gazillion ways and smashed avo, but the effort is often worth it. We had some grand luck in this regard recently at Small Graces in Footscray. And as for Jack B. Nimble? Well, truth be told it had somewhat moved out of our radar coverage since our initial review soon after its opening. But in one of the wonderful ways in which social media – often maligned – can enhance our lives, I became a while back FB buddies with one of the Jack B. Nimble crew. Consequently, I was entranced by photos she was posting of the dishes being created there. “Oh boy,” surmised I. “Time for a return visit!” So Bennie and I did just that. My choice – yes, it was one of the photos I’d seen on FB as posted by Jack B. Nimble chef Deb – is a medley of mushrooms on cauliflower rice with grilled pepper romesco, sesame, spiced pepitas and soy bean crisp ($17). Forget the vegan nature of the dish, the price tag and the cafe setting – this is amazing. The cauliflower rice – made, I’m told, by simply whizzing some raw cauliflower and

And the mushies – including what look like discs of spud in the photo and on the plate – are superb, mostly still firm, lightly fried, full of flavour. Deb tells me that “sesame oil makes anything taste good” – but I’m not buying it. There’s some profound cooking smarts going on here. Some fine greens and just the right amount of that romesco sauce complete the picture of fantastic dish. Bennie’s pick – southern fried chicken burger ($17) – also hits the spot. It’s served on non-brioche roll – I can hear the cheers about that from some quarters. The chicken is well fried and accompanied by chipotle aioli, cheese, lettuce and tomato. On the side is fine slaw – something we always appreciate. Deb tells me the Jack B. Nimble menu is destined for a soon-come spring freshen-up. But almost certainly the mushroom medley will remain – after all, it is her mum’s fave dish on the menu. VEG-OUT TACOS
Tacos are a weekly fixture in our house. A, because they’re so easy to throw together; and B, because the possibilities are endless. We’ve expanded our taco repertoire from the traditional browned beef mince variety to chicken, prawn and fish. A brilliant take on tacos to try is marinated mushroom tacos. With their meaty texture, the mushies make a delicious, substantial filling that’s especially great if you’ve got any vegetarian friends coming over. FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? NC: I moved out of home when I was 18, so I’ve had 30 years’ practice! Plus I love everything about cooking … the planning, the shopping, right through to the finished product. I’ve heard certain chefs say we “eat with our eyes”. I reckon that’s bulldust … if it tastes good, it IS good. FB: What is your signature dish? NC: Probably lamb shanks, but only in winter! I went through a stage where I put ALL my recipes (literally thousands) into a Word document and printed them out, and the lamb shanks recipe is probably the most dog-eared. In summer, I get pretty excited by a perfectly-cooked steak. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? NC: Garlic prawns on the barbecue for entree, a great rib-eye steak for main, and my (long-deceased) Nanna’s lemon cheesecake for dessert. She never wrote the recipe down; I was about 10 years old the last time I had it. I’ve never forgotten how good it was. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? NC: Has to be MasterChef MasterChef, especially now they’ve gone back to making the show all about the food. I could watch Keith Floyd do his thing on telly for days on end. FB: What is your favourite food? NC: In a pub, has to be the chicken parma. In a restaurant, probably the best seafood on offer. At home, it’s hard to go past a leg of lamb roast. Watching footy, a pie of course. FB: What is your favourite drink? NC: Beer, gin and tonic, and single malt scotch. Each one is perfect in the right circumstance. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? NC: King Henry VIII, Tom Hanks, Harry Shearer (This Is Spinal Tap/The Simpsons Simpsons), John F. Kennedy and Sir Winston Churchill. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? MARINATED MUSHROOM TACOS 1/3
cup (80ml) extra virgin olive oil cup (80ml) lime juice, plus lime wedges to serve 1 tbsp coriander stalks and roots, finely chopped 2 tbsp coriander, finely chopped, plus extra sprigs, to serve 2 tsp smoked paprika Salt and pepper 4 large portobello mushrooms, cleaned and sliced To serve: 2 tbsp tomato salsa 2 tbsp sour cream 1 tsp lime juice ¼ small purple cabbage, finely shredded 1 avocado, finely sliced Fresh or pickled jalapenos Coriander leaves 12 soft mini-tortillas, warmed, to serve 1/3
In a large bowl, combine olive oil, lime juice, paprika, coriander roots and stalks, salt and pepper. Place mushrooms in a bowl and coat them completely in the marinade. Set aside to marinate for a few minutes. Once marinated, heat a chargrill pan or barbecue over medium heat and cook mushrooms for 1-2 minutes on each side or until browned and tender. Combine salsa, sour cream and lime juice to create a taco sauce. To serve, top warm tortillas with cabbage, mushrooms, avocado and taco sauce. Top with jalapenos, coriander sprigs and lime wedges on the side.

AT A GLANCE
Ford Everest is a big, rugged 4WD / SUV that’s been around in other countries since 2003 but didn’t arrive in Australia until the release of the third generation model in late 2015. Although it’s fully imported from Thailand it is an important model for Ford Australia as the company moves away from vehicle production while retaining local employment by providing technical input through its research and development investment. Although the arrival of Ford Everest almost dove-tailed with the departure of the popular Territory, the two vehicles are quite different. Everest is a serious off-roader that’s built on the same platform as the company’s Ranger ute, while the locally-produced Territory was a typical urban family wagon based on the Falcon. Everest, as the name suggests, is big. At just under five metres long and over two metres wide it takes up a fair bit of road space. It has a versatile and spacious cabin capable of carrying up to seven occupants and gear in relative comfort. Our Everest road test vehicle was the entry-level Ambiente AWD. It comes with 17-inch alloy wheels which tend to look a bit puny inside the large wheel arches designed to cater for the 20-inchers of the top-spec Titanium. The big and bold chromed trapezoidal radiator grille is flanked by the latest in integrated projector headlamp/daytime running light set-ups that improves visibility to approaching drivers in poor weather conditions. At the rear there are sculpted tail lamps with integrated LED lighting. The higher specced Trend and Titanium models also get running boards.

Everest is available in three variants, Ambiente, Trend and Titanium spanning a price range from $47,990 to $74,701. The entry-level Ambiente has five seats with a pair of third-row seats available for an additional $1000. Trend and Titanium models have seven seats. Ambiente and Trend come with either rearor four-wheel drive. All Everest models are powered by Ford’s 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbo-diesel Duratorq engine as used in the Ranger. Towing capacity of up to 3000kg is offered if the trailer is braked. It’s not the quietest diesel engine we’ve
encountered but shouldn’t be an issue with a vehicle of this sort. The only gearbox is a six-speed automatic. All Everest models employ an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen for infotainment system display and control together with a 4.2-inch colour instrumentation screen for driving data. SPORT Former Eagle lands at St Albans St Albans has pulled off the recruiting coup of the Western Region Football League off season, snaring former West Coast Eagles premiership star Daniel Kerr for the 2018 season. Kerr, an Australian international rules representative, an All Australian and AFL life member, will play exclusively for the Saints next season after a deal was reached last week. New Saints coach Brad Murphy told Star Weekly that Kerr’s signing would have major benefits for a club that wants a return to its powerhouse status. “There’s two components to this – the on-field and the off-field,” Murphy said. “The on-field probably speaks for itself. “He’s a 220-game AFL player, he’s won a premiership, he’s a life member, he’s an All Australian, he’s done everything in football that you can basically do. “He’s as fit as a fiddle still, his running
capacity is really high – he had 57 possessions in a game last year at local level. “So he’s still going to find the footy and he’s going to demand that a good player either tags him or plays on him.” Kerr’s impact has already been felt off the field. Since the 34-year-old sent a video message to the St Albans players from his home in Perth outlining his excitement in signing, the club has been inundated with calls from local businesses about having an involvement next season. There is a genuine buzz of excitement in the Saints camp that hasn’t been felt in years. “Off-field, we’re going to get a lot of benefit,” Murphy said. “The extra sponsorship dollars have already started pouring in over the past 24 to 48 hours since his announcement to our members and sponsors.”
Kerr still lives in Perth and will commute to Melbourne for games. But the midfielder is expected to play more than 75 per cent of the team’s games, staying in Melbourne for three-to-four game blocks at a time. Kerr will be doing a lot of work in the community too. “It’s also a lot of stuff he’s doing off the field with his charity and helping a lot of disadvantaged young Aboriginal children, which he’s going to promote a lot within the club and we can help him,” Murphy said. “He’s going to take a lot of junior training nights, he’s going to go out to our sponsors and have lunches and dinners, he’s going to do sportsman’s nights and I can tell you a lot of big names are going to be coming down to Kings Park next year.” Lance Jenkinson
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ I thought I might not be writing footy for a few weeks but with cricket unable to get games away due to the state of wickets, the Sherrin kickers continue to dominate. Brad Murphy has made a bold statement as new coach of St Albans unveiling his recruits last week including former AFL star Daniel Kerr. The former Eagles premiership player oozes class, and will no doubt make a mark for his new club along with another five or six new faces, and an old face in Jack Sims returning. The Saints have had a couple of very lean years, but with this talent can certainly bounce back quickly. Murphy is a proven winner as a coach, especially during his tenure as under-18s coach at Hoppers Crossing. ■ Robbie Greto and Matt Scalzo have stepped down as coaches at Sunshine Heights, after a successful stint at Glengala Road. Damien Farnfield has stepped up from reserves coach to lead the Dragons for the 2018 season with Matt Camilleri looking after the reserves. Jason Hamilton is the new top man at Braybrook, after a football journey that has taken him to the Northern League, Southern League and into Tasmania as well as a stint as an umpire. He has taken on the toughest job in footy in the west, trying to get the Brookers back to past glory. There is still a few prime positions to be filled, most notably division two grand finalists Yarraville Seddon and premiers North Footscray. ■ Even though Port Melbourne Colts now play in the Southern Football League they still have ties to the west and it was great to see Stacy Massis and Blake Twomey receive life memberships to the club last week. Mandy Drew and Adam Walters were recognised by Williamstown with life memberships as was Werribee trio Peter Williams, Jimmy Masterson and Doug Joiner.
Bulldogs in extra pain By Lance Jenkinson Footscray’s failure to execute with the ball has proven costly in a two-wicket loss to Prahran in a one-day season opener at Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday. The Bulldogs posted a competitive 7-227 off their 50 overs, but Prahran reached the target with four balls to spare after being given a leg-up from the hosts. The wayward Dogs gifted extra runs and deliveries after sending down 18 wides and a no-ball. “It cost us the game,” Footscray president Geoff Collinson said. “There was one waist-high no-ball they hit for six and they get another ball with the free hit. It’s disappointing.” Footscray got off the perfect start with a 60-run opening stand between man of the moment Dean Russ and his opening partner Greg Munro. Russ was locked in from the start and went
on to record a century. The veteran batted from the first ball to the last en route to 115 off 135 balls, including six fours and three sixes. “He’s a fantastic player and a true professional,” Collinson said. “Last year he made four centuries and was out for six weeks with a broken hand. “If he keeps going the way he is, he might have a very, very good season.” Munro’s knock served as a precursor to the bulk of Russ’s partnerships. Most of the Footscray batsmen got starts and assisted Russ in raising the bat for the ton, but none could bolster the scoring to the point where they could bat Prahran out of the game. Skipper Dylan Kight added 21 off 34, Matt Underwood contributed 10 off 22, Tim Buszard made 19 off 26 before he was run out and Hamish Winter-Irving provided a handy 17 off 14 – not enough collectively with the benefit of hindsight. Prahran got a century through Shaun
Miller, who came in at first drop to make 123 not out off 154 balls. Will Sutherland provided ample assistance for Miller with 55 to get the visitors close to the target. Despite a stellar bowling performance from Footscray medium pacer Ben Green, Prahran managed to reach the target in the final over. “He’s a very good white ball bowler,” Collinson said of Green. “He bowls good full length yorkers, so he’s very good in the one dayers and the Twenty20s.” Just like the opening round, Footscray will host an away game at home due to its opponent not having a ground ready for play. The Bulldogs will entertain Northcote in a one-day game on Saturday with the visitors ground unfit for play. “It helps that we’ve got a very good relationship with the Maribyrnong council,” Collinson said. “We were ready for play two weeks before the start of the season.”

Cricket is losing ground and needs to do some serious thinking about the future of turf wickets. Ground sharing with football might be a thing of the past as both sports overlap more and more and demands on grounds become unworkable. Altona vows to work hard to get back on top Altona was faced with two options after losing a Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association grand final last summer. The As could have sulked about their premiership near-miss or get back to work and strive to go one better this season. A team captain Adam Yates has seen his playing group buy into the second option. “We’ve worked pretty hard in the off season,” he said. “We don’t expect it just to happen. “We’re going to work pretty hard throughout the season and if we do that and stick to the basics well, we’ll be thereabouts.” Altona will move into the post-Aaron Maynard era with optimism. Maynard, for years a lock No. 3 batsman, has retired from sub-district cricket to play locally with St Francis de Sales. Maynard was not only a run machine, but a much-loved figure at Altona, so there will be a void to be filled on and off the pitch. “He was a great servant of the club, not just
on the field, but off the field as well,” Yates said. “He’s a much-loved person and I’m sure he’ll still be around the place. “Batting at three, he was brilliant for us, but he’s decided to go back to local level cricket.” Replacing Maynard was not easy, but Altona believes new import Charlie Best could fill the void. The addition of Best, a wicketkeeperbatsman, will provide flexibility within the A’s line-up. “He’ll bat in the top-four for us and give us the opportunity to play an extra bowler,” Yates said. “We should have plenty of batting depth, down to probably seven or eight, and we’ll have seven bowling options this year.” Altona’s bowling attack boasts three spinners, including Yates, Stefan Sidari and Sean Hollins. Sidari was a top-10 bowler in the competition last season, taking 32 wickets. That was second only in the team to fast bowler Shannon Clarke, who took 41 wickets, second best in the competition.
Yates reckons the depth in Altona’s bowling attack will be a huge asset. “If you’re not bowling well, you’re not going to get many overs, so it puts a lot of pressure on,” he said. While Altona is still in a premiership window, it will continue to nurture the young talent it has coming through. Expect to see a lot more of teenagers Mitch Cullen, an opening bowler, and Daniel Mackenzie, an all rounder, in the first XI. Yates is also keen to see further development in the host of 15 to 17 year olds playing with the club. “It’s all about growing from within,” he said. Altona will open its season with a one-day game against St Bernard’s at Grant Reserve on Saturday. Elsewhere, Yarraville will entertain Ivanhoe at the Yarraville Oval, while Williamstown will hit the road to face Coburg. Lance Jenkinson

Crusaders’ final assault By Lance Jenkinson Western Crusaders are through to Gridiron Victoria Vic Bowl XXXIII after crushing Croydon Rangers 34-10 in their semi-final at Henry Turner Reserve on Saturday. The Crusaders will go into the showpiece event against surprise packets Melbourne University Royals at MacPherson Park on Saturday as hot favourites to make it 12 wins in a row and secure their first Vic Bowl title since 2008. Crusaders coach Craig Wilson said expectations were high within his camp, but admits the favourite tag comes with its own pressures and that the Royals were not going to be easy-beats. “Everyone is really stoked to get there,” Wilson said. “We’ve had an undefeated season so far and we’re playing against a team that’s just around the corner from us, so there’s a bit of a rivalry. There’s a bit of pressure on everyone
to perform … so we’re going to have to work hard.” The Crusaders raced to an 18-point lead over Croydon and never looked back. They were marshalled around the field by star quarterback Andrew Healy. Healy, a Canadian import, provided the highlight of the game with an incredible 98-yard running touchdown on the back of a well-disguised trick play. “That was pretty special,” Wilson said. “There was no one on the field that could outpace him. “Andrew used to play wide receiver in college, so he’s got speed and he’s got moves as well. “It was a trick play, as well, so everyone got caught by surprise … by the time they realised that Andrew still had the ball, he was halfway up the sideline.” Healy had the Western Crusaders’ offence in a groove from the outset. He combined with wide receiver DJ Battistella for two touchdowns, while running back Samuel Delai was a constant threat.

Saturday’s decider will provide the Crusaders an opportunity to atone for their Vic Bowl loss to Monash Warriors last season. No one expected Melbourne University – a team with a record well under .500 during the season – to be in the Vic Bowl, but it advanced with a shock 24-13 win over Monash in Saturday’s semi-final. “It just shows you how a bit of emotion and a bit of hunger can get you up,” Wilson said. “They obviously wanted it more than the Warriors and that shone out. Marcus Bontempelli has become the youngest player in Western Bulldogs history to be a dual Charles Sutton Medal winner. The star onballer and occasional forward secured consecutive club best-and-fairest awards last week at the age of 21. He eclipsed seven-time club champion Scott West, who won his second best-and-fairest as a 23-year-old in 1997. In a thrilling vote count, Bontempelli took out the top honour with 185 votes, just one ahead of smooth-moving half-back flanker Jason Johannisen, who finished with 184, with Jack Macrae third on 155. “I feel incredibly humbled and privileged to be able to accept this award,” Bontempelli said. “The club and all its people have had a significant impact on me in such a short period of time. “I can’t thank the club, and particularly Charles and the Sutton family, for everything Charlie’s done from a legacy point of view and what he represents.” After the Western Bulldogs droughtbreaking premiership in 2016, Bontempelli conceded this season was a letdown. The Bulldogs missed out on the finals, the first premiership team to do so since Hawthorn in 2009. But Bontempelli remains bullish about his team’s future. “There’s a long road ahead, and with the group we’ve got, it’ll be a hell of a ride,” he said.
