Toyota’s final day jobs blow Thousands of job losses are sweeping the western suburbs as Toyota Australia stopped making cars at its Altona plant on Tuesday, signalling the end of auto manufacturing in Victoria. Australian Manufacturing Workers Union divisional secretary Dave Smith said more than 2600 direct employees and at least 3000 supply-chain workers would be losing their jobs. The factory closure signals the end of $1 billion in annual exports for cars and parts. At Laverton North, Toyota car-seat manufacturer Toyota Boshoku is understood to have started slashing the jobs of close to 400 workers on Monday. Components importer and manufacturer Toyota Tsusho confirmed some of its western suburbs companies would be downsized while others would close. Croatian-born St Albans resident Damir Dakovic started work at the Altona plant in 1996, a year after it opened. “It’s a sad time for all us, for all Victoria and all Australia,” he said. “I learned my English here and I met all my friends – Asians, Europeans and Australians. And I got the opportunity also to be employee rep. “All my family are driving Toyota cars and I believe I will drive Toyota for rest of my life.” The last Toyota Camry went down the Altona production line about noon on Tuesday. Melton South’s Matthew Kinson, an employee for nearly 19 years, said he had a feeling of pride whenever a Toyota passed, and as one of the only Aussies to have made a hybrid car.
“Something that I always reflect back on when a Camry passes me is, I could have made that car,” he said. “It’s a bloody good car to drive – made in Australia.” Sunshine West’s Michael Spiteri, a Toyota worker for about 22 years, said he was going for a job interview in security work next week. “Hopefully, that pans out well for myself,” he said. “I’ve got a family, married with two kids, so moving into a new job is important for me with mortgages and bills that never stop.”

Toyota Tsusho human resources general manager Ruth Anderson said the parent company would be downsizing while several subsidiaries would close. “We have TT Steel Centre (at Laverton North) and we had our first people from there leave last Friday [October 22] and there will be ongoing redundancies now for largely the remainder of the year,” she said. Toyota Australia president Dave Buttner said 1300 workers Australia-wide would be retained and the Altona site would be developed into a centre of excellence. “Altona will house our expanded design and engineering capabilities,” he said. “The centre of excellence will include a world-class training facility and other commercial initiatives.”

Village goes with the glow West Footscray will twinkle and glow when its inaugural Festival of Lights unfolds. West Footscray Traders Association president Pradeep Tiwari said the festival, derived from traditional Indian Diwali celebrations, would be like an early Christmas. It will be launched on October 12, with traders and residents in the vicinity of Barkly Village encouraged to illuminate their businesses and homes. The festival will include projections on to several public buildings. The festival’s free closing ceremony, on October 21 from 4-11.30pm at Footscray’s 501 Receptions, will include children’s activities and a fire show. Suburbs safer as crime statistics on the decline Crime rates have dropped in Hobsons Bay and the city of Maribyrnong, latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency show. Hobsons Bay’s recorded offences fell 9.7 per cent from 7002 to 6325 last financial year, and Maribyrnong’s 6.8 per cent from 9315 to 8683. Despite heightened community fears of home invasion, aggravated residential burglaries (where someone is home) declined. In Hobsons Bay, they dropped from 45 to 30, with non-aggravated burglaries down from 326 to 302.
In Maribyrnong, aggravated burlaries fell from 87 to 72, but others rose from 489 to 500. Overall, crimes against the person in Hobsons Bay rose by 6.1 per cent, with family violence accounting for many of those. Family violence serious assaults rose from 138 to 141, and there were still 145 common assaults despite this being 12 fewer. Stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour rose from 140 to 201 and sexual offences increased from 108 to 115. Non family violence common assaults rose
from 80 to 94, while there was a drop in serious assaults from 112 to 78 cases. Assaults on police and emergency services increased in Maribyrnong from 24 to 39 cases and in Hobsons Bay from 38 to 41. Robberies were also up in Hobsons Bay from 34 to 41 and in Maribyrnong from 102 to 110. In Maribyrnong, family violence serious assaults dropped from 104 to 87 and common assaults from 114 to 100. Stalking, harassment, private nuisance and threatening behaviour dropped from 152 to 96,
with 53 of those cases related to family violence. Sexual offences rose from 113 to 125. Motor vehicle theft rose in Hobsons Bay from 267 to 353 and in Maribyrnong from 427 to 436. Drug offences dropped from 292 to 221 in Hobsons Bay and from 630 to 521 in Maribyrnong. Square art hit by vandal By Goya Dmytryshchak A vandal who may have a grudge against green energy has “systematically ruined” an Altona political art installation about brown coal mining. Wild Books Collective (WBC) created the work, Lignite, as part of the Hobsons Bay art in public places program the council hoped would revitalise Altona’s crime-plagued Harrington Square. The installation included window and pavement decals with coal-mining facts and black yarnbombing on trees. Collective member Stephen Louis said the installation had been repeatedly vandalised throughout September.
“The work is a bit of a political hot potato,” he said. “It’s critical of brown coal as a sustainable energy source, but it’s also recognising that Altona has a history with brown coal and it has social impacts – impacts on indigenous people but also the people who work the mines.” Louis said the decals were twice sprayed over with black paint. “We spent a good few hours on our knees scrubbing, using a solvent to get the paint off,” he said. “A couple of days later, it happened again, but this time it was almost like the paint was poured on with big dollops.” The decals were cleaned again, but a couple of days later an unknown offender completely
removed them. The art collective replaced the decals with spares, but these were also removed. Yarnbombing on trees in the square, comprising numerous black squares knitted by individuals and community groups over a fortnight, were completely torn down. A Caucasian man in his late 20s or 30s, with a moustache, was captured on CCTV in the act of spraypainting. “I think it’s someone who has a really angry opposing view to what we’re saying,” Mr Louis said. “Just as there are people who are pushing for a change as far as fossil fuel use goes, there are people who see it as like, ‘but what about the jobs’ or ‘my dad worked in the field’.”

Melbourne might be in the grip of Tiger mania, but there’s a different type of tiger people are being warned to be wary of. Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong councils have warned people to be on the look out for snakes. “Stewy the Snake Catcher” said he had this season received more than 20 calls for snake removal in Hobsons Bay, mainly for tiger snakes and less commonly the eastern brown. “This is the time of year that they wake up from their slumber and get moving around looking for food and, being breeding season, they are looking to mate,” he said. “As we build more estates, we’re pushing them further in and further out; as the houses build up, the snakes have got to go somewhere and end up living amongst us.” Hobsons Bay council director Sanjay Manivasagasivam advised people to keep their distance if they saw a snake. “We recommend dog walkers keep their dogs on a lead in natural areas around Hobsons Bay,” he said. “To discourage snakes from entering your property, it’s paramount to do a few simple things – cut grass regularly, keep the ground clear of debris, and restrict availability to water sources and pet food.” Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said there had been a few sightings, particularly around waterways such as Maribyrnong River. “We ask that residents be cautious of snakes during the warmer months, particularly when they are in parkland and near waterways,” she said. Snakes are protected under law, making it illegal to harm or personally catch them.

Sick cat scam warning A western suburbs animal rescue group is warning the community to be wary of scammers selling domestic kittens as special breeds, with many of the cats infected with parvovirus. RSPCA Victoria major investigations team leader Lisa Calleja confirmed her organisation was investigating reports regarding the sale of sick kittens in Victoria’s west. Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue founder Nathan Miles said the suspected ringleader was selling kittens from a premises in Newport believed to be infected with parvovirus.

“He’s procuring kittens fraudulently from the general community, organisations and shelters using fake ID and he is then selling these animals as special breeds,” Mr Miles said. “When he scams a cat from a group, he then impersonates to the public that he works for that shelter or group, as the paperwork has all the organisation’s details on it. “He then illegally alters the documentation to change the kitten to a breed. “One woman bought a kitten for $490 believing it was a ragdoll cross Burmese – and in reality it was a domestic medium-hair moggy.” Mr Miles became aware of the scam after a carer spotted a cat his group had adopted out being listed for sale online. After issuing a scam alert on Facebook, Mr Miles was inundated

with victims coming forward, many of whom had bought cats that subsequently required veterinary treatment or had to be euthanised. “The problem is, every animal [the scammer] is taking into that house is coming into a parvo environment … and that’s how they’re coming out, sick,” he said. “Sadly, they don’t care about the kitten or kittens whatsoever and their motivation is purely deception, money
and greed. This scam is cruel and vile and they appear to not care whatsoever about the welfare or wellbeing of the cat.” Anyone with information or who has concerns for the welfare of an animal can make a report to the RSPCA via rspcavic.org or 9224 2222. Turning the Footscray Community Arts Centre into a home for everybody would be the cherry on the cake of an already great organisation, according to new boss Martin Paten. Paten will this month take the baton as FCAC chief executive and general manager from Jade Lillie, who departs after five years at the helm. The western suburbs-raised Paten is eager to return to his roots following a decade as director of the internationally renowned Castlemaine State Festival. He intends to tread lightly at the outset while absorbing what makes the centre so successful, but is already hatching ideas to broaden its appeal. “I’m getting increasingly excited about starting,” he said. “Since the 90s I have been looking to it as a beacon of community arts practice.” “I’m really keen to start letting more people know about FCAC and make it a place where they can have an emotional connection.” Benjamin Millar

A massive glow above Hobsons Bay caused community alarm on Sunday night, but the MFB quickly moved to allay fears a refinery was alight. It issued a statement for Altona, Altona Meadows, Altona North, Brooklyn and Laverton North and Seaholme stating routine refinery operations coupled with atmospheric conditions was creating the glow.

Yarraville book-seller Kate O’Donnell has a novel problem arising this week – the need to start finding space on the shelf for her own book. After almost two decades selling children’s books and young adult fiction to young readers, the last decade at The Younger Sun, O’Donnell is releasing her debut young adult title. Untidy Towns, a coming-of-age novel set in a small country town, centres around the trials and tribulations of 17-year-old Adelaide. O’Donnell, 34, has always loved reading and has been drawn to writing young adult fiction due to its fertile ground exploring the tumultuous years of teenage life. She began Untidy Towns about seven years ago, writing in her spare time between working at The Younger Sun bookshop and in editing,
until she had a work ready to send to publishers last year. “I tried my best to have an authentic teenage voice,” she said. “I try to talk to teenagers as much as I can.” While O’Donnell grew up on a property outside Geelong, rather than the small country town of her lead character, she did draw on her own experience in a private school in imagining Adelaide’s journey. She is looking forward to Untidy Towns taking on a life of its own in the hands of teenagers with hopes and dreams of their own. Police are investigating the use of a stolen credit card 10 times within an hour in Footscray and Flemington on September 18. The card was stolen from a vehicle in Donald Street, Footscray, about 7pm that day. The suspect is described as being of southern European appearance, 50-55 years old, 170 centimetres tall and with black hair and a black and a grey goatee. He wore a dark jacket, jeans and dark slip-on shoes and carried a toiletry bag.

Green days for development site By Goya Dmytryshchak A new community garden will be established on an $8.5 million Footscray development site before townhouses are built next year. The land at 130-186 Buckley Street was sold by the state government to Evolve Development earlier this year. Evolve will grant access to the 4341-square metre parcel of land to not-for-profit group 3000acres, before it is used for residential development. 3000acres works with community groups, government bodies, landowners and local
governments to create temporary and long-term food gardens in urban environments. Manager Pippa French said a planning meeting would be held at the site on Sunday, October 15 at 11am. “We’re hoping to put a thriving garden on it,” she said. “I think Footscray’s crying out for a bit more open space, a bit more green space.” “We’re hoping to work with everyone, chat with all of the community members who are interested and design a pop-up garden to grow food between now and when the developers start building. “We’re talking to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, trying to involve them as
well, so we can grow food for their foodbank. “We’d also have a whole range of volunteers and locals getting involved, working on the produce and sharing the harvest.” Evolve managing director Ashley Williams said the site would be developed into townhouses mid to late next year. “We think it’s a great way to activate a long-dormant site prior to development and can’t wait to see 3000acres and the community bring it to life.” For details visit 3000acres and New Community Garden for Footscray on Facebook.

Face to face dialogue Internationally-recognised master craftsman, Italian mask maker Matteo Destro is visiting Australia for the first time and will present an artist talk in Altona. He will speak about the masks he has made and how to use them in theatrical performance. “If a person is open to change, a mask can transform an actor into a completely different character,” Destro said. “I make masks to be played, not hung on a wall, because when a mask is played well the door to another universe can be opened, which transforms an audience.” Destro will also speak about the Italian tradition of theatrical masks from his native region of Venice/Padua. “The origins of theatrical masks are from the Italian commedia dell’arte tradition of the 16th century,” he said.
“My research also includes the Lecoq theatrical approach to movement and acting. “I am so excited to be in Australia for the first time to share my passion and creative research on masks with local artists and anyone who would like to come along to my artist talk.” Asked if he had a favourite mask he had made, Destro said he could not single one out. “For me it would be like asking me to choose my favourite child - impossible.” Destro’s artist talk is on Saturday, October 7 from 7pm at the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre, 5 Sargood Street, Altona. A portrait of privilege By Goya Dmytryshchak Newport artist Robert Hague has been selected as a finalist in Western Australia’s premier portrait prize for his first painting in 25 years. His portrait of himself as Captain Cook, a statement on white privilege, is among 40 works shortlisted from more than 300 submissions for the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture. It is the third richest portraiture prize in Australia after the Archibald and Doug Moran competitions, with a total prize pool of $70,000 and the winner taking home $50,000. “This is my only painting in 25 years, although my first ever exhibition at 16 years old was painting,” Hague said. “It is a work about how we must shine a light on our own white privilege to understand that bigotry and racism harms everyone.” In his piece, Hague as Captain Cook sits “stabbing at a map”, as in the widely known portrait of Cook by Nathaniel Dance. “In researching this work, I came to feel differently about Cook, a figure often reduced to short-hand for a ruthless empire, forever a symbol of all that is wrong with one people’s greed over another,” Hague said. “Yet I have found that I am also Cook, unsure of what is mine and what is yours, never truly belonging and with a shared responsibility to repair the damage done.” Hague said Dance’s portrait was rightfully mocked by many. So Hague transported Cook into a mystical garden scene on an over-the-top decorative plate. “This image and the plate are broken,” said Hague, who has previously focussed on sculpture. The winner will be announced on November 10.

Setting the bar high for tolerance Footscray’s first community-owned LGBTIQ-friendly bar has secured a venue. Pride of our Footscray, co-owned by nearly 200 shareholders who chipped in a minimum of $500, will take over 1/88 Hopkins Street on October 15. The initiative is the brainchild of Footscray’s Mat O’Keefe, who’ll be “chief bar officer”. He has plans to completely refurbish and expand the venue, formerly operating as Eighty Eight Karaoke Bar. “The Asians consider 88 to be lucky,” Mr O’Keefe said. “They have this giant space but they’ve got a liquor licence for 88 people – even though they could have a liquor licence for 250 – because of the lucky number. “We want to expand that because it’s a really big space. “If we got a balcony, which we’re talking to council about, you would be able to see, obviously, Barkly Street, Hopkins Street, but also Docklands, the wheel, the city, Franco Cozzo – it’s in a really good spot there opposite the market.” Pride of our Footscray is expected to open in time for the Spring Carnival. Sowing the seed of war history By Goya Dmytryshchak Private Eldred Clayton Lovett was just a 12-year-old Footscray schoolboy when he read about a fabled general who camped his entire army under a magnificent oak tree. Enraptured at the thought, Lovett planted an acorn in an old jam tin and eagerly watched it slowly sprout. Lovett enlisted in 1916 and was just 27 when he died in action, 100 years ago in Polygon Wood, France, in World War I.
When his parents heard of the death of their only son, they transferred his tree to Footscray Park as a living memorial. The only oak in the park, it became known as Soldier Tree. It was the Footscray Historical Society’s Steve Wilson who discovered the tree had disappeared while researching Private Lovett’s story, and organised its replacement with Maribyrnong council. “I think it’s an ongoing memorial to soldiers killed in the war,” he said.
“It’s not a statue – it’s a living monument, so that’s why I wanted to replace it.” On Saturday, a replacement Soldier Tree was planted in the memorial garden in honour of Lovett’s sacrifice and other local Anzacs. The trip that Jack built Altona’s Jack Grego is one of 16 Australians headed abroad for a young diplomats tour of Europe with United Nations Youth Australia. The year 12 student at Westbourne Grammar in Truganina applied for the tour online after seeing the opportunity on a website. In December, he will depart for a month-long tour of nine countries taking in Germany, France, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Belgium and the United Kingdom. He will be learning about the region’s history, from Auschwitz-Birkenau to the Palace of Versailles, and about political and social issues facing the international community. Jack said he believed you could never have too much diplomacy. “Take for example, Donald Trump: His reaction to North Korea was how not to do diplomacy.” While Jack plans to one day become a diplomat with the Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade, he intends to study commerce first. He said young people from different nations coming together was one of the best chances of securing a better future. MY PLACE Seddon artist Larissa MacFarlane speaks with Benjamin Millar.
I have lived in Seddon for almost 13 years and in the general area for a bit longer. For the six years prior, I had been on the edge of homelessness, very lost and confused, and desperately trying to re-establish a life after experiencing a brain injury in 1998. The arts community of the west at that time was also particularly welcoming and my development into the artist I am today, owes a lot to that time and those people. What do you love most about the area? Is there anything you would change? What I love most about Footscray today is also what I find most difficult - change. Our suburbs are transforming really fast and while that is exciting, I have concerns that some people are getting left behind. If I had a magic wand, I would change the ways we approach transport and move beyond our dependence on cars. Do you have a favourite local place or places to spend time? Favourite cafes or eateries? I think my favourite local place is the Robert Barrett Reserve. I ride my bike there almost every day to do my pain management (before I then go to the hydrotherapy pool). Since my brain injury means that I live with ongoing nausea, noise and light sensitivity, cafes are my least favourite places. But I do really love Pompello in Victoria Street. What inspires your art and what are you hoping to get across to people? My visual art practice started out exploring
places in the West, alongside ideas of belonging, change and ways that we can celebrate what we have, here and now. I predominantly work in printmaking, such as linocut and etching. What can you tell us about your handstands and what they mean to you? I became obsessed with handstands 13 years ago. I believed that if I could learn how to do a handstand, I could cure my brain injury. (That was before I learnt that, even though brain injuries always improve with time, a brain injury is for life.) Amazingly, learning how to handstand, did in fact, improve my brain injury heaps. This led to my street art practice of pasting up life size images of myself in handstands, with my walking stick, in the very spots that I actually do handstands. How did Snapshots of Seddon come about? It was after I went to my first Seddon Festival in 2005 and noticed the lack of people with disabilities involved or attending, that the idea of the Snapshots of Seddon was born. That first year (2006), with the support of the Metroaccess worker at council, I got together some of my disabled friends in Harris Reserve, shared cameras and we helped each other take photos. We then exhibited them in a Charles Street shop. It was a pretty major part of my life for six years, and between 2006 and 2011 there were over 800 photographic entries. What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you? I once studied five years of a medical degree and almost became a doctor!

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Maple Leaf Meats restores Kenny Weir’s faith in food trucks The initial buzz that attended the arrival of food trucks in the west has long since faded. Trucks still park at Yarraville Gardens and elsewhere, but they have become for us – and no doubt others – just one of many eating scenarios. For this Saturday lunch, our post-kung fu, food-seeking rambling finds us parking and intent on doing the “truck thing” for the first time in a long while. We do really, really good. After perusing the line-up of vehicular vittles on offer, we opt – for no great reason and with only modest expectations – for Maple Leaf Meats and their cool, old-school truck/ caravan. I say modest expectations because of quite a few disappointments of the mediocre and over-priced food variety. The Maple Leaf Meats crew goes a long way towards restoring our faith in food trucks and what they offer. The menu runs to barbecue offerings such as ribs and wings, but we’re not up for that kind of full-on meatiness or expense (in the case of the ribs), so opt for the burger route. My maple leaf burger ($14) is a very fine production with its cheese, pickles, tomato, lettuce and chipotle mayo. Had I been paying more attention, and not in such a hungry hurry, I may have noted the presence of caramelised onion and therefore opted for another burger selection, caramelised onions being another offering we often find
MAPLE LEAF MEATS Yarraville Gardens very disappointing and dull. Here, though, they’re fine – a plus on what is already a fine burger. Best of all, the patty is of robust and delicious beefiness. Bennie does even better with his smoked meat burger ($15). In addition to the routine fillings, including in this case mustard, this winner comes with “Montreal smoked meat”. This turns out to be pastrami, which – we’re told – is a Montreal specialty. But this is not just pastrami – it’s Really Good Pastrami and there’s heaps of it. This is not merely a matter of the sort of flavour tingle that a rasher of bacon gives to a burger. So profound is the smoked meat’s impact that it’s more about creating something wholly new and different. Bennie loves it. In tune with the rest of our meal, the small serve of chips ($5) is excellent – each and every one is hot and crisp. The best part of an hour later, we’re pretty much in Werribee and getting on with our day. From Spotty to a fabulous flag By Lance Jenkinson Bachar Houli’s journey from the Spotswood Football Club to the AFL premiership dais has not always been smooth – but it makes for one of the best football stories of the year. Houli, a devout Muslim, was footy mad as a child, but his parents were initially not keen for their son to pull on the green and gold of Spotty in the under-11s. Houli refused to give up on his dream, getting his Woodsmen coaches to take him to and from training, where he started to learn the craft. It did not take long for Spotswood to realise it had a talented young player on its books. With his closing speed, reading of the play and long-range left boot, Houli began to turn heads, piquing the interest of the Western Jets, who signed him to play in the TAC Cup. Through hard work and dedication, Houli earned his call up to the big league with Essendon. But after only 26 games, he was on the outer and found his way to Richmond through the 2010 preseason draft. It was a move that would be career-defining. Houli is now a premiership player after starring in a 48-point thrashing of the Adelaide Crows in the AFL grand final at the MCG on Saturday. “You never forget your grass roots,” he said. “Spotty were fantastic for four or five years, gave me the opportunity to play under-11s footy, especially when my parents weren’t very supportive of it. “It’s a long journey when you start from not being allowed to play footy to now your parents being your biggest fans.” Houli was superb in the grand final, with some suggesting the half-back flanker was hard done by in the Norm Smith Medal voting.

The 29-year-old was full of class rebounding out of defence and a steadying influence when the game was at its hottest. The judges awarded the medal for best-on-ground to Dustin Martin, who polled 13 votes to Houli’s 10. Houli, who finished with 20 kicks, five handballs, 11 marks, five tackles and 1.2, did not care in the slightest, though did admit he might have cost himself a vote or two by not turning his two behinds into goals. “This is so much more important,” he said while proudly gazing down at his premiership
medallion. “Dusty has been the clear outstanding player in the competition – he deserves everything that comes his way. It’s a great feeling, it’s a fantastic feeling.” Houli was one of 44 players who had never played in an AFL grand final before Saturday. While there were nerves for most, Houli was surprisingly calm and it showed in his football. Houli was able to live in the moment and not get too overawed by the enormity of the game, which helped him settle on grand final day. “I just wanted to soak it in and really enjoy the experience because you might not get that

SPORT Werribee players make a premier move “It’s a big move for all of us,” he said. “I just wanted to go and play premier league again after it didn’t look possible with Werribee at the present time. That’s all the intentions are – to go and play at the top level.” Barker has been a stalwart for Werribee. He leaves the Bees with no animosity and could return to the club as a player in the future. For now though, Barker will play as a third to Altona skip Dane McKinnon, another former Werribee player who has crossed. Altona, which has also brought in Nathan Wilson, an Australian Open champion from Essendon, will begin its premier division season on the road at MCC on Saturday, while Werribee’s division 1 opener is against Darebin City on the same day. Bulldogs name their aim By Lance Jenkinson Footscray – yep, that’s right, Footscray – is targeting the Victorian Premier Cricket top four this season. The Bulldogs are back to their original trading name of Footscray this summer, dropping the Edgewater from their name after a deal with the local property developer came to an end. Bulldogs president Geoff Collinson said the club had always been the Footscray Cricket Club. “We traded for a while as Footscray-Victoria University when they provided sponsorship,” he said. “The Edgewater property developers provided us with sponsorship for five years, so we traded as Footscray Edgewater.” Having won a first XI premiership as Footscray Edgewater four seasons ago, the Bulldogs believe they are in a strong position to challenge again. The Bulldogs have injected a number of talented youngsters into the club, while the only major loss is star leg-spinner Jeremy Hart in a blow to their bowling stocks. But the Bulldogs have depth right throughout the club and pressure for spots will be intense. “We’ll be very disappointed if we don’t finish top four,” Collinson said. The president says head coach Steve Chapman reckons the club has the strongest line-up of teams in his time at the club. “We came fifth in the club championship last year and we’d be hoping to give that a good nudge this year,” Collinson said. Footscray’s leadership stability is one of its greatest assets. Chapman is back for a fifth season, Dylan Kight has retained the captaincy and stalwart Dean Russ is the vice-captain. The coaching panel has been strengthened with the addition of Stan Nell, a former coach at Hawthorn Monash University and Greenvale Kangaroos. “We’ve got a great reputation amongst all the clubs,” Collinson said. “Players see us as a very good destination for support and coaching. “It’s to do with our solidarity and our coaching structures.” Guy Walker will be like a new recruit for Footscray. The Victorian-contracted bowling all-rounder is back and looking to rip in after a shoulder operation. “He’s looking to get on the park and have a full season to make sure he makes the most of his Victorian contract,” Collinson said. Replacing a player with the experience of Hart, who took 34 wickets at 26.97 last summer, is difficult to achieve, but winter signing Mitch
■ The footy season is over and the silly season has begun with players moving between clubs at all levels and rumours abound as fact takes its own off-season. The Bulldogs have endured a tricky situation in the past few weeks, where quite frankly there are no winners, only damaged souls and reputations. The life of a professional AFL player no longer just revolves around their ability to play the game of footy; it is now also a game of celebrity. That comes with a big pay cheque and demands a bigger slice of your personal life. Some will love it, others won’t. There is a fine line between living the dream, and a nightmare. It is no coincidence mental health issues have become more prominent for young sportsmen and women. ■ It will be interesting to see the AFL draft and watch Cam Rayner take his place in the upper echelon of the game, but how many others will join him from the Jets? Lachlan Fogarty is a certainty, but the future of others hang in the balance. While former Spotswood junior Bachar Houli polishes his premiership medal, there are a list of talented players who can only dream. Werribee’s Matt Hanson won his third consecutive Bruce Montgomery trophy last week, and must be close to getting his chance at the elite level. Kane Lambert, a former Williamstown VFL player now Richmond premiership player, is a fine example of perseverance paying off. ■ The local football world lost a trio of great men recently with the passing of Terry Sheahan, Bruce Johnson and Lindsay Murphy. Terry was part of the famous Sheahan family who had so much to do with the formation of the Werribee Football Club. Bruce could be a cranky bugger, but his devotion to his family, and in particular son Brad, was an enviable trait. Lindsay was a dual premiership player at Williamstown and a life member of both Willy and Parkside Football Clubs. Three very different men but all sadly missed. ■ Winx rolls into Melbourne this weekend for her first run in the Turnbull Stakes on Saturday. The purists love her as a class thoroughbred, while the public love a winner and this weekend at Flemington she should make it 21 in a row. The Cox Plate at Moonee Valley is the race she is targeting, but take the chance to see a once-in-a-lifetime horse this Saturday, she is worth it.

Altona Juniors 9.6 (60) d Hoppers Crossing 2.3 (15) Altona Juniors hit the hapless Hoppers Crossing with attacking force in a 45-point grand final mauling at Galvin Park. The Vikings were well on their way to victory by half time, leading by 28 points. Lachlan Hicks was a cornerstone for the Vikings, while Ryley Giles-Holmes was the best finisher with three goals.
U11 division 3 - Cool Centurions
