the underpass, given its proximity to Victoria University. Residents responding to Star Weekly’s online report of the incident supported MTAG’s call for a truck ban. Simon said the number of trucks using the route over recent months is getting out of control. Jennifer labelled the underpass a death trap. “What’s the point of alarms and number plate technology when you’re squashed flat on the footpath?” she wrote. The state government announced in May it will spend a further $1.1 million on a safety upgrade that will include alarms that notify authorities and automatic number plate technology to capture the details of drivers disobeying the 4-metre height limit. VicRoads acting operations director Fatima Mohamed said the works were expected to be completed by late 2017. “There are currently 28 advance warning signs and five height detection devices around the bridge, which alert drivers to the height of the bridge.” VicRoads has resisted calls to ban trucks on the route.

Frustrated residents are demanding a total ban on trucks beneath the Napier Street bridge following another dangerous bridge strike. Morning peak traffic ground to a halt in Footscray last Wednesday when another container truck crashed into an overhead barrier protecting the notorious bridge. Trucks have now hit the 4-metre bridge barriers almost 70 times in the last decade. All eastbound lanes were closed after the truck’s container struck the underpass barrier, toppling across the bike lane onto the footpath. The incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of a $600,000 realignment of the barriers in March this year. Just days after the bright yellow barriers were realigned, a driver was injured when his car collided with a container that fell off a truck as it struck a barrier. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group posted a video of the incident’s aftermath online, saying it was extremely lucky no one was hurt or killed. MTAG secretary Martin Wurt called for a complete ban on the estimated 3000 trucks that use the route each day. “The new barriers that the government put up, the safety barriers to stop this happening, obviously are a total failure,” he said. “This situation needs to change. How long can it keep going on for? We need to have the trucks banned. That seems to be the most simple, realistic solution.” Mr Wurt said the road was inappropriate for trucks regardless of

A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR I was deeply saddened by the passing of, Ron Palmer aged 92, who was often called Mr Footscray due to his involvement in almost every aspect of community life in his beloved suburb.

I was fortunate to have grown up knowing Ron personally and I learned so much from him about community spirit and making a difference. His honours include an Order of Australia and the Australian Centenary Medal, he was also named Footscray Citizen of the Year and the 2007 Premier’s Senior Citizen of Victoria. Ron’s volunteering included being a treasurer of Friends of Footscray Park, he was president of the Footscray Historical Society and was life member of several groups. This includes Footscray Community Arts Centre, the Footscray Football Club, now the Western Bulldogs AFL Club, the Footscray Yarraville City Band and Gilmour College for Girls and Footscray RSL. He’s keenly supported the Footscray Yarraville City Band for more than 40 years. There are many more groups that Ron has been involved in and he’s contributed in several ways to strengthening our community spirit and making our City the wonderful place it is today.

By Goya Dmytryshchak The disappearance of a kayaker fishing off Altona has prompted safety warnings. Japanese national Junichi Yoshimura, 41, was captured on CCTV launching his kayak from Altona boat ramp about 5am on Thursday. His colleagues raised the alarm when the baker failed to arrive for work in Torquay on Friday. His friends located his car, a white 2002 Subaru Forester, at the boat ramp. But his yellow Hobie kayak was missing. On Monday morning, Mr Yoshimura’s empty kayak was found 16 kilometres west of Edithvale in Port Phillip Bay.

Zeally Bay Sourdough owner Joel Farnan said Mr Yoshimura had arrived in Australia in November. “He’s really into fishing – it’s one of his passions,” he said. “To a Japanese person it’s an amazing thing to just go out on the water and pull in some really beautiful fish and be out there amongst it. “He got his car and then, shortly afterwards, bought a kayak and often he’d go on these expeditions and come back with fish and share them around the bakery.” He said the Japanese consulate had been notified. Mr Yoshimura’s family was due to arrive in Australia on Tuesday.

Acting Sergeant David McHenry urged anyone going out on the water to check the weather, tell people their schedule, have safety equipment and carry a personal locating beacon. Altona’s Eoin Corroon, whose Sea Sherpa business focuses on offshore safety, said the kayak fishing community was devastated about Mr Yoshimura’s disappearance. “There have been many times I’ve been out on the bay at Altona and have seen people kayaking without life jackets or without wearing life jackets properly, which is a legal requirement in Victoria,” he said. “Also, I’ve seen people using kayaks that are not suitable for the weather conditions in the bay.”

Tenants win compo A landlord has been ordered to repay almost $9000 to tenants who were evicted from their Braybrook home when they threatened to take legal action to secure urgent repairs to the property. Tenants Dhuminda De Silva and Chamani Siriwardhana lived in the Ruby Way property owned by Siripala Prasangika from February, 2011, until October, 2016. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal heard that the home was beset by a number of problems requiring urgent repair throughout that time, including a leaking roof, faulty central heating and a garage door that would not lock. The tenants raised concerns about a broken rangehood and sought repairs to a faulty alarm system. They argued mould caused by “a significant leak” in the roof rendered one of the bedrooms uninhabitable and created a health risk. The tenants confirmed in June, 2016, they intended to take the matter to VCAT, after which they received a “notice to vacate” issued on the same day. They sought a total $18,409 in compensation for the lack of adequate action on the various issues they had raised during their tenancy. The tribunal ordered, in August of 2016, that urgent repairs be carried out, but Ms Prasangika failed to comply with the order. VCAT member Barry Josephs found the landlord had breached the Residential Tenancies Act. He ordered Ms Prasangika to pay $8885 to the tenants.

One for the books Best-selling children’s author and Williamstown resident Andy Griffiths is urging people to show a lot of love for their local bookshops. Griffiths, who is an ambassador for Love Your Bookshop Day on August 12, said the initiative was a reminder to people of how valuable bookshops were to the community. He is urging people to visit their local bookshop, citing Book and Paper in Williamstown and Sun Bookshop in Yarraville, as two of his favourites. Griffiths said that a few years ago people had feared electronic books would take over, but these days they accounted for only about 20 to 30 per cent of total book sales. “If anything, people have come back to print in a big way because they want a physical object they can hold in their hands,” he said. “Many people, including kids, have been on a computer screen all day and they want to get away from that screen to a place that isn’t beeping and distracting their attention.” Griffiths is launching his latest book in the Treehouse series, The 91-Storey Treehouse, on August 8. The series has sold almost three million copies in Australia alone. Griffiths said his books were like old friends. He is currently reading The Devil Drives: A Life of Sir Richard Burton. “It’s an old book, but I’ve been meaning to read it for many years and I finally got a gap,” he said. Goya Dmytryshhak

The state’s planning tribunal has sent a development back to the drawing board for being an “underdevelopment” of a prime Footscray site. Star Weekly last August reported that Maribyrnong council had knocked back plans to build a seven-storey apartment complex immediately north of West Footscray station. Councillors rejected the proposal for an 86-unit development on the corner of Cross and Hocking streets, currently occupied by Potter’s House Christian Church, citing inadequate parking and a height well above the preferred four-storey limit. Developer Jabala Pty Ltd fought the decision in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, but lodged scaled-down plans. VCAT members Rachel Naylor and Ann Keddie this month ordered the developers to submit new plans, arguing that both the reduced proposal and the original plans were an underdevelopment of a site offering “a significant development opportunity”. “The surrounding context can easily absorb the seven storey height given its robust nature,” they ruled. The interim decision found that both designs had failed to take full advantage of “the opportunities afforded by the physical and planning contexts of this site”. They criticised the council’s refusal because of insufficient parking, accepting evidence that the site is well served by public transport. Jabala has been given until Friday to indicate whether it will amend its proposal. Maribyrnong council, Melbourne Water and owners of 4 Cross Street will then be invited to make written submissions on the proposal before VCAT issues a final decision.

Tunnel blasted as ‘retrograde’ By Benjamin Millar

Focus on a different world A photographic exhibition opening in Footscray this week is exploring the desire to connect to a land as an uninvited visitor. TextaQueen’s Eve of Reconstruction, a series set in the Australian landscape, was created late last year during a period of “personal grief” while undertaking an artist residency at Bundanon in New South Wales. The artist, who is best known for her felt-tip work, said the photos combine science-fiction and costumes created from the natural surrounds. “It’s the second in a series of photos where I’m contemplating what it means to look through a neo-colonialism prism, but as a brown body,” she said. “It is looking at what might be projected onto me, and how to disrupt that.” The exhibition comes as TextaQueen was last Friday announced as one of 15 recipients of the State Library of Victoria’s 2017-18 Fellowships. She will use her $15,000 creative fellowship to support ‘Poster Child’, a series of poster artworks contextualising the experiences of marginalised artists in contemporary Australia. The West Gate Tunnel Project is at odds with current urban planning and will be a “blight” on the area, according to the peak planning industry body. The Planning Institute of Australia’s response to the environment effects statement (EES) for the $5.5 billion tollway project accepts there is an over-reliance on the West Gate Bridge and a need to better manage freight traffic from the port, but slammed the statement for failing to consider transport and land alternatives. The submission by the institute’s Victorian division president, Laura Murray, argues that heavy demand on the West Gate Bridge and M1 corridor is a “result of inadequate investment in alternative transport options” and that the new tunnel project will merely entrench the domination of car use across Melbourne. “Consideration of alternate options is fundamental to a rigorous EES process,” the submission says. “Instead, the West Gate Tunnel is presented as a fait accompli … there are a variety of other solutions which could be used to manage the lack of river crossings.” PIA Victoria is calling for more freight to be moved by rail, an increased emphasis on job growth in the western suburbs and a greater focus on alternatives. “The proposal as it stands is a retrograde, traffic engineering-focused solution,” its submissions said. “The proposed 18 lanes of traffic on and above Footscray Road is completely out of proportion with an inner-city location … and will permanently blight the area.” A submission by the Maribyrnong Truck Action Group provided in-principle support for the project, but raised major concerns about air pollution and health impacts.

Arresting development By Goya Dmytryshchak An all-female police crew staffed the north-west on Thursday to celebrate 100 years of women in policing. More than 30 women were rostered on in police divisions 2 and 3, which cover Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Melton and Wyndham. Friday marked 100 years since Madge Connor and Elizabeth Beers became the first female “agents” with Victoria Police, although they had no arrest power and were paid half as much as men. It would be another seven years before four

women were sworn in with equal pay and 30 years before they got a uniform. In 1951, Grace Brebner became Australia’s first female detective and in 1960 women took the first three places – dux, second and third – among graduate recruits. Hobsons Bay Inspector Michelle Young, who was sworn in 32 years ago, was one of four women at her first police station. One had to resign from operational duties when she got married – a practice only abolished in 1972. “The glass ceilings that were very present in the past, and certainly in my early years, have shattered,” Inspector Young said.

Four teenage boys have been charged with multiple aggravated carjackings across several suburbs after a man had his BMW stolen at knifepoint in Newport last week. Police allege a 59-year-old man was in his black BMW at the corner of Farm Street and Home Road about 6.45am on Wednesday when he was confronted by a number of males armed with a knife. He was allegedly threatened before the assailants fled in his vehicle. Forty-five minutes later, police arrested a youth in a carpark on the corner of Boardwalk Boulevard and Dunnings Road, Point Cook. A 17-year-old Braybook boy was arrested in relation to the carjacking. The stolen BMW was found nearby. Five hours later, police swooped on a home in Hammond Street, Altona. They arrested three more boys in connection with the carjacking. A silver Hyundai sedan nearby was seized by police as evidence. The Braybrook youth and three 16-year-old Altona North boys have been charged with committing aggravated carjackings and armed robberies in Newport, Altona, Yarraville and Pascoe Vale. Altona beach users are angry Hobsons Bay council has placed rocks over a popular swimming spot known as Flemings Pool. The council told Star Weekly it had undertaken drainage works and placed the rocks to protect the seawall from erosion. It plans to build a viewing area and new access ramp to the beach. One local resident posted on Facebook that the council had “ruined Kokomo”, a reference to the Beach Boys’ tune. “I’m really hoping Flemings Pool is not

finished ’cause there is literally no sand, all rocks are covering it,” the post said. “I hope the rocks that have been left there will be taken away!!!” Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the current state of Flemings Pool was temporary. “Works on site are being carried out to repair damage that occurred during the 2014 storms,” she said. “Several stop-gap measures over the past three years have delayed the inevitable and now major works need to happen to ensure Flemings Pool can be enjoyed for many years to come.

“We have plans to deliver these works over the next 18 months.” Historian Peter Weaver, who grew up 100 metres from Flemings Pool, said that in the 1970s there was a two-metre drop from the seawall to the beach. “The council in the ’70s got advice from Japanese hydrologists to help with the sand movement and they built large stone groynes to stop the tides flushing the sand away,” he said. “I envisage and hope [that] after a few storms, the beach will return better and bigger than before – although they may have to take away some of the rocks.”

Locomotion commotion The romance of rail, albeit it in miniature form, will be on full display at a model railway exhibition in Braybrook this weekend. The Sunshine Model Railway Club will host the event at Braybrook College on Ballarat Road on Saturday and Sunday. Burnside resident and club president Joe Saliba said the event was in its 21st year and “at last count” would feature 19 types of diverse scale trains. “The exhibition is for all who like trains or just want a day out to do something with the family and meet new people,” Mr Saliba said. Having been a train enthusiast and involved in the club for more than 20 years, Mr Saliba said there was one thing that kept encouraging him to steam ahead, year after year. “Seeing people’s faces light up with a smile tells me that I need to run another exhibition

the next year,” he said. The exhibition will be held in the college’s sports stadium (enter from Burke Street) on Saturday, August 5, from 9.30am-5pm and on Sunday, August 6, from 9.30am-4pm. Western suburbs teenager Jennifer Ly is strikingly beautiful. With her radiant smile, heart-shaped face and long, thick brown hair, she’s sure to turn heads. And that’s exactly what local police and her concerned family and friends are hoping for. The 14-year-old hasn’t been seen since July 5, when she was last at her Burnside Heights home. This is the third time the teen has been reported missing this year. For National Missing Persons Week, held annually in the first week of August, Star Weekly spoke to Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Lilly (pictured, inset), who is based at Sunshine police station. While he couldn’t comment on the investigation into Miss Ly’s disappearance, he said police worked around the clock in their bid to trace the footsteps of people who have been reported missing. “The Victorian clearance rate, if I can put it so clinically, is 99.8 per cent,” he said. “It’s pretty amazing … but one missing vulnerable person is too many – this is a real priority for Victoria Police.” Figures obtained by Star Weekly from Victoria Police’ reveal there were a staggering 11,355 missing person reports last year. Of them, 23 remain missing. About 60 per cent of all cases involved girls or women, well over half went missing more than once and the vast majority concerned missing teenagers under the age of 17. Acting Senior Sergeant Lilly said it was difficult to pinpoint why teenagers were the most likely to run away, but contributing factors were often cultural issues, drug and alcohol abuse in the family home or anger

management problems. Where they disappear to is just as difficult to predict, he says. “There’s no set pattern where I can say, ‘OK I have a 16-year-old female, this is 100 per cent where she’s going to go’,” he said. “Some of these high-risk missing persons, they’re pretty smart – they know not to go to the same place.” Acting Senior Sergeant Lilly said there was a misconception that someone had to be missing for 24 hours before the police could become involved. “This old tale – it’s not true at all,” he said. “A missing person is someone who is vulnerable,

mobile phone use and location records, as well as their credit card spending. In most cases people turn-up at a relatives or friend’s house. MY PLACE Altona marine ecologist, diver and educator Matthew McArthur speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

I moved to Altona Meadows in late 2010 after 10 years away from Melbourne. We moved to Altona about three years ago. My wife works at the Altona Meadows Primary School and our two children attend Altona P-9 College. I started a science communication business here two years ago and kicked off the Altona Beach Patrol litter removal group with another highly motivated community contributor, Melinda Corry, a year and a half ago. What do you like about Altona? After three years in Canberra, it was a relief to be back on the coast. I’m teaching our children to snorkel at Jawbone [Marine Sanctuary], which is a suburban gem of a spot. Meandering to the beach on a hot afternoon is easy here, where in Canberra a beach trip is a major expedition. I’m not much of a birder, but you can’t help but notice the diversity and density of bird life in the area … our home backs on to native grasslands, so I’m well served with insect and reptile wildlife encounters, too. For a biologist, Altona’s about as good a suburb as Melbourne has to offer. What would you change? Duplicate the railway line and double the services. With the limited roads in and out of our suburb, the rail line seems the only option for increasing the movement of people as housing density increases.

What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery and why? The Pines. Nothing beats a feed of hot chips after a mid-winter dive. While I’ve only lived here a few years, I’ve been visiting Altona for a lot longer and I have vivid memories of a childhood meal on the foreshore as a storm rolled in. With the pine trees and she-oaks whipping in the wind and the sea rising as the dark clouds piled up, I filled my belly with excellent fried goodies. Still serving excellent fried foods, so it’s a mix of quality, nostalgia and warming up after diving that keeps my money flowing through their till. You’re involved in the Hobsons Bay marine debris source reduction plan, initiated by Tangaroa Blue Foundation to reduce litter such as cigarette butts entering waterways and the sea. With the ban on smoking in alfresco dining spaces coming in, we’re encouraging smokers to pick up one of the pocket ashtrays the Hobsons Bay council made available in cafes, or from one of our volunteers, so hopefully we won’t have butts that would formerly have gone in cafe ashtrays ending up in garden beds and gutters. We’re also collecting empty tins from the various mint brands and upcycling them for the next batch of pocket ashtrays we’ll hand out when the council ones run out. So if anyone loves their mints, please drop your empties in the boxes you’ll see at the libraries and community centers. Butts that end up on the ground almost always wash into the bay.

EASY CHOCOLATE FIX My mum is always asking me for easy slice recipes, because she’s always being asked to “take a plate” to some party or bowls club function she’s attending. I swear, her social life is more exciting than mine! My go-to solution is chocolate crunch slice – a simple, one-bowl recipe that has a great texture and crunch and isn’t too sickly sweet. Best of all, the topping can be varied – mostly I’ll melt a block of dark chocolate, add a couple of drops of canola oil and spread it on top. But vanilla or caramel frosting (you can buy this ready-made) work equally well, as does melted white chocolate (with chopped dried cranberries for a festive twist). Thick, fudgy chocolate frosting and colourful, star-shaped sprinkles can make this slice perfect for kids’ birthday parties. As you can see by the photo, I made this slice (for the umpteenth time) at the weekend. Twelve-year-old son could not get enough of it, and hubby thoroughly enjoyed a piece or three with his night-time coffee. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is all aboard the Station Hotel These days, there are a handful of inner-west pubs that appear to aspire to offering very good pub tucker or fare beyond that. But in some ways, the Station Hotel is the grand old dame of that scene. It’s been around a goodly while, has had at least one management change of which I’m aware and – more recently – experienced a fire that closed the joint down for a few months. We enjoy a lovely Tuesday night there, with good service and a happy atmosphere in the mostly full dining room and more raucous goings on in the bar. We like that the Station aims high but stays a pub. It’s a birthday night at CTS HQ, so there’s a sense of recklessness in the air and financial restraint is forgotten. We love cauliflower so have no hesitation in ordering the cauliflower croquettes with romesco sauce ($14). And are disappointed. They are expertly cooked, ungreasy and chockers with gooey rich goodness. But they are largely tasteless and certainly bereft of cauliflower flavour. Much more impressive – and tasty – is the tuna tataki with “miso mayonnaise” and pickled cucumber ($19). Every mouthful is a zingy jumble of top-notch contrasts. One of us was always going to order steak – and that turns out to be, well, me. That order being in the form of a knock-out “rib eye, 500g Great Southern, (Vic) British breeds” ($55), cooked medium rare.

So this proclamation by both of us may not be based on much. But … BEST. STEAK. EVER. The meat is quite heavily seasoned and is quite salty, but that’s fine by both me and Bennie, who also gets quite a good go at it. The spuds and salad are fine, but are largely superfluous to the carnivore carnival. By comparison, Bennie’s pan-fried pork fillet with apple and apricot stuffing on pearl barley and peas with cider jus ($35) is rather demure. However, he enjoys it plenty and the meat is superbly moist and tender. “Tastes of chocolate and caramel” ($14) is perhaps a tad too fiddly for the likes us apple pie guys, but we enjoy it anyway. Underneath a dome of “chocolate mirror glaze” is a globe of caramel parfait – not quite ice-cream, not quite cake, all wonderful. More appropriate for us is the luscious vanilla panna cotta with a berry and meringue topping and a fresh berry and cream shortbread off to the side. Gators snap to attention By Lance Jenkinson Altona Gators have missed out on the Big V basketball men’s division 2 play-offs, but can go into the off season full of optimism after an impressive second half of the season driven by youth. The Gators won two of their last three games, but were out-classed in the final round by minor premiers Craigieburn Eagles, losing narrowly 78-69 at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday. Despite the loss, it was a performance the young Gators team could be proud of against a team that is heavily favoured to win the division 2 title. “The team that we lost to on the final day did finish first,” Gators coach Des Radoslovic said. “They’re on top for a reason and we challenged them right till the end. “Even though we didn’t get the win, there was still a lot of positive signs in the way that we finished the season with the personnel that we had.” Craigieburn’s fast start to the game and a closing act from American import Dexter Graham proved the differences between the two sides. The Eagles opened up a handy 12-point buffer by the end of the first period and refused to let it go. Each time the Gators got close, Graham, who finished with 24 points, would deliver a dagger. “He’s a six-foot-six legitimate athlete,” Radoslovic said. “His penetration made a big difference. “We had to put a lot more emphasis on stopping him, but to Craigieburn’s credit, they shot the ball well from the outside when we did.” Young Altona Gators centre James Till entered the game on the back of a starring role in a win over Wallan Panthers a week earlier. Seagulls ride the wind for thumping win A defensive effort for the ages was the cornerstone to Williamstown’s remarkable 79-point win over reigning premier Footscray in the Victorian Football League at Burbank Oval on Saturday. The Seagulls restricted their western suburbs rivals to two goals on a day when gale forced winds were blowing to one end. It was clear from the outset that Williamstown was switched on, despite the absence of star onballer Michael Gibbons. In yet another endorsement for coach Andrew Collins, the Seagulls players defended the stoppages to the nth degree and utilised the dead wing to seep the confidence out of Footscray, which was goalless at quarter-time, even though they’d kicked with the aid of that howling wind in the first term. Where Williamstown was spot-on with its ball movement, the Bulldogs blazed away time and again, missing targets and relying on long-range attempts to score that resulted in just six behinds.

The only two goals of the first quarter were kicked by Jack Dorgan and Adam Marcon for the Seagulls, giving the home side a one-goal lead. Williamstown made full use of the wind in the second term, producing a four-goal-to-one quarter. Woodsmen hang tough By Lance Jenkinson Spotswood had to withstand a spirited fightback from St Albans before holding on for a nine-point win in Western Region Football League division 1 at McLean Reserve on Saturday. The Woodsmen were in total command at three-quarter time, leading a low-scoring game by 41 points and having conceded just one goal to that point. But like a bolt from the blue, the Saints made it a contest by scoring the last five goals of the game. Woodsmen coach Anthony Eames confessed his team had been lucky. “We know St Albans always have a crack, regardless of where they are on the ladder,” he said. “They always front up and if they get a bit of a sniff, they can do some damage.” Brandon Walshe had a major influence over the result for Spotswood. the majority of the day, I thought he did that,” Eames said. When Spotswood needed a leader to step up, it was invariably Murray Boyd who did so. You expect that from your captain and Boyd so often does the job for the Woodsmen. “He leads by example – players follow him and everyone around the comp respects him, there’s no doubt about that,” Eames said. The most exciting part of Spotswood’s journey this season are the youngsters blooded into the team. Ciaran Lynch, Nayef Hamad and Jordan Boyd, who kicked a goal, are improving by the week. Second beating third-last was not a win that will create too many waves, but it was important in the context of the season. It all but ensures Spotswood will hold a double chance in the finals, having opened up a three-game break over the sides in third and fourth. A tough run home – the Woodsmen face Hoppers Crossing (away), Werribee Districts (home) and Caroline Springs (away) – will provide more good tests for the younger players in the lead-up to the finals.

Meanwhile, Altona moved to within a game of the top five after a 57-point win over Caroline Springs at JK Grant Reserve. The Vikings fought back from 26 points down at quarter-time to win in a canter, courtesy of starring roles from Josh Rafferty and Steven Kennedy, and three goals from Daniel O’Leary. In division 2, Yarraville-Seddon was upset by 13 points at home against Albanvale. The Eagles led by 22 points at three-quarter time, but in the final term the Cobras piled on six goals to one. Cameron D’Altera kicked four goals in Newport Power’s 17-point win over West Footscray at Bryan Martyn Reserve. North Footscray had a relatively comfortable 49-point win over Manor Lakes at Hansen Reserve. In division 3, Parkside thrashed Laverton by 198 points at Laverton Park Reserve. Jason Cloke kicked 11 goals for Parkside to take his season tally to 97. Cloke could reach the ton in front of his home fans on Saturday when the Magpies will take on Sunshine Heights.

Western Jets coach Torin Baker walked away from Saturday’s 30-point loss to Sandringham Dragons believing his team was beaten by the most talented squad in the TAC Cup. No matter how Baker slices and dices the Dragons, he envisages a team that will be hard to stop in the finals. “We played them earlier in the year with their full allotment of private school players in and they’re probably the best we’ve come across this year,” Baker said. “It was a private school round this week, so they had a fair few out, made about 10 changes to their team from the week before, but they still showed they’re just a very talented group. “They’ve got high-end talent, but they’ve got excellent depth, so they don’t drop away too much.” It was the class of Sandringham’s small forward Aaron Trusler (four goals) and midfielder-forward William Walker (three) that proved the difference between the sides. Blake Graham was the Western Jets only multiple goalkicker with two on a day when his side was crying out for more forward threats. “They just had a bit more class up front at times than us,” Baker said. Baker could not fault the endeavour of the Western Jets players. The Jets led by five points at three-quarter time, but it had benefitted from the aid of the wind in the first and third quarters. Sandringham took full advantage of the breeze at its back in the last with six of the seven goals kicked in the final term. “I thought we played well into the wind, but we just couldn’t capitalise both quarters that we had the wind,” Baker said. Zak Butters was influential for the Western Jets on the wing. Connor Thar has also played the bulk of his season forward, but is now part of the midfield rotation. Tristan Xerri, out of Caroline Springs, has proven to be a capable forward and ruckman for the Western Jets this season, but found himself in the defence and took on the new role with vigour. Wind denies Altona City some welcome points Altona City could have opened up a handy three-point gap at the top of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 ladder, but it was gone with the wind on Saturday. City had to settle for a frustrating nil-all draw with second-placed Hoppers Crossing in the western derby on a day when it was nigh on impossible for players to negotiate the windy conditions at Grange Reserve. City president Joe Tanti said his side had the lion’s share of possession and scoring chances, but no matter how hard they tried, they could not put the ball in the back of the net. “We’re not overly happy with the result,” Tanti said. “We probably felt that we had the majority of the chances, but just couldn’t convert. “Their keeper [Kieron Sharratt] had a blinder of a game. He kept them in it in the end.” Altona City had the wind at its back in the first half and piled on the pressure. City’s impatience would be their undoing though, as they were lulled into playing long balls and taking long-range shots instead of

their usual build up play. Too often the ball would float over Sharratt’s head, or be parried away by Sharratt on those instances when they worked the ball into the penalty box. More structured play against the wind in the second half meant City posed a threat, even if it wound up counting for nought. “Against the wind, we did well, we kept the ball down and played some good football and created a few chances for ourselves,” Tanti said. “Especially with that kind of wind, it wasn’t your average wind, it was over the top. “But the second half we were, in my eyes, the better team.” Sefgi Murat and Ayodeji Omoboye were Altona City’s most dangerous attackers. Murat, in particular, was always presenting and looking to create for his teammates. James Neighbour was rock solid at the back, while David Taylor was arguably the best player on the ground. Taylor, who played in the midfield, produced his best game for City. “He’s box to box, he gets stuck in with hard tackles, he’s good with his head,” Tanti said.

“I think he would’ve had a headache by the end of the game with the ball being played up in the air so often.” Altona City remains on top on goal difference from Hoppers Crossing and City will host fifth-placed Fitzroy City in a hugely important game at Kim Reserve on Saturday night. In state league 1, all it took for Altona Magic was one goal, a superb free kick from Jon McShane, to beat Westgate 1-0 at Paisley Park Soccer Complex on Saturday evening. It was a tough weekend for Altona East Phoenix, losing 4-0 to North Sunshine Eagles. The Phoenix face a struggle to climb out of the relegation zone and must obtain some points – ideally the maximum – against mid-table Western Suburbs at Paisley Park on Saturday. In state league 3, Melbourne City had to endure a nightmare, going down 15-1 to FC Strathmore at Strathnaver Reserve. Footscray reached the Dewar Shield finals on a dramatic final day of the home-and-away rounds. The Bulldogs needed to take care of their own business, which they did with a 37-22 win over Endeavour Hills at Frog Hollow Reserve, keeping their fingers crossed that Melbourne University would lose, which unfolded in a 27-22 thriller with Harlequin. That meant Footscray moved up to fourth and Melbourne University tumbled to fifth. The Bulldogs will play Box Hill in a cut-throat semi-final at RHL Sparks Reserve on Saturday from 3pm.

Williamstown CYMS has fallen out of the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C top four after a disappointing 24-point loss to fifth-placed Old Geelong at Fearon Reserve on Saturday. Gulls focus on own game By Lance Jenkinson A week of soul searching was just the tonic for Altona to begin its form reversal in the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league. The Seagulls overcame a winless month with a 5-0 drubbing of Yarra Valley at Altona’s hockey ground on Saturday. After a draw and two losses in July, the Seagulls needed to find a way to re-capture their early season form that still has them in contention for a top-four finish and a finals double chance. “We had a big chat on Tuesday night and re-evaluated our goals,” Seagulls vice-captain Steve Campbell said. “We really wanted to play our style of hockey, wanted to control the game again because we kind of moved away from that and more thinking about what the opposition is going to do. “There was a real focus on us and not the opposition this week.” Altona produced its most exciting hockey in a while. Andrew Scanlon kick-started the rout with the game’s opening goal.

Scanlon, the equal top scorer in the competition with 17 goals, finished with two for the game. Josh Horton, Josh Pace and Jyah Johnson also got in on the scoring act. On a windy day and with an opponent more than willing to stack the defence, Altona’s front line had to work hard to create chances. In the absence of forward Pat Phillips, it was up to Johnson and Harrison Gill to give the Yarra Valley defence the run around. “When they flood their defence, you’ve got to try and run hard to open up pockets for other people,” Campbell said. “Their work rate up front and ability to stretch Yarra’s defence was outstanding.” There was no more important player on the field for Altona than captain Harry Dolenc. Dolenc’s stick work in tight confines was a sight to behold for the home supporters. “His ability to receive the ball in tight spaces and get it to the open side of the pitch really helped,” Campbell said. Campbell confirmed Altona’s desire for a top four-finish, where the reward is a double chance.

The Seagulls are in fifth spot and need to make every game a winner in the remaining five rounds, starting with a home game against sixth-placed Southern United on Saturday. “We set our goal on top-four and we’ve still got that goal,” Campbell said. “We have to win this one and a few others against some of the top sides to have a chance for that. “We think it’s reachable, but this game is huge because of where we sit.” Meanwhile, Footscray was riding a wave of confidence going into its clash with Mentone and it showed in a 2-0 win at Mentone Grammar School. At the start of June, the Bulldogs were fourth last and in the relegation conversation, but now they are just one point out of the top eight. In women’s premier league, Altona played out an entertaining 3-3 draw with Yarra Valley at Altona. Stephanie Young, Jessica Brennan and Phoebe Rothfield were the scorers. Footscray consolidated its place in the top eight with a 1-1 draw away to Mentone. Lily Brazel, a Victorian Institute of Sport athlete, scored the equaliser for the Bulldogs.

They’re all lining up to spoil for Footscray’s undefeated record in the men’s state league, but the Bulldogs have all the answers. The latest to threaten was MCC, but Footscray managed to fight back from two goals down at half-time to win 14-11 at Albert Ground on Saturday. Williamstown edged closer to a finals berth with a 15-8 win over Eltham.

Western Bulldogs speedster Jason Johannisen has described his past 12 months in the AFL as a “crazy experience”. Toyota has no shortage of SUVs and off-roaders – the Prado slots between the Fortuner and LandCruiser in the hardcore off-road part of its range. But it’s not a niche vehicle; in 2016 it was the most popular in the large SUV segment. How many models can I choose from? There are two engine choices (4.0-litre V6 petrol or 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel), two transmissions (six-speed manual or automatic), five or seven-seater options and four trim levels. The base GX – only available with the diesel – has 17-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera, a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen and Bluetooth, to name the highlights. Stepping up to the GXL, which can be had with either the petrol or diesel engines, adds the likes of roof rails, tri-zone air-conditioning, navigation, rear parking sensors and heated side mirrors. The VX adds 18-inch alloys, front parking sensors, leather accented seats and a 14-speaker JBL surround-sound system. At the top of the range, the Kakadu, which is diesel only, includes a moonroof, rear seat entertainment, active cruise control, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. Is it expensive to own? While it is covered by a capped price servicing scheme and the services themselves are quite affordable, the intervals are only every six months (or 10,000 kilometres).
