Krown-ing glory Musician and poet, Wol Riak, is using his experiences from South Sudan to fight a war of words. The 19 year old from Tarneit, who arrived in Australia eight years ago, will next month compete in the Hobsons Bay heat of the Australian Poetry Slam. “I do music and I write a lot of lyrics and I just thought I would do it to portray some of my lyrics that I have not put to music,” said Riak, who performs as Krown. “I try to portray ghetto stories in my own sort of way. “I mix what I’ve seen in my background with modern imagery.” Performing writers will have two minutes at the mic and five random audience members are chosen as judges. There are 50 heats Australia-wide, with the best poet from each state going to the national finals for a chance to win an $11,000 prize pack. Hobsons Bay hasn’t hosted a heat in eight years. Childcare plan blow out By Benjamin Millar The cost of redeveloping a demolished West Footscray childcare centre has blown out to almost $6 million – close to three times the initial project budget. The redeveloped Church Street Children’s Centre was originally due to be operating by the start of this year at a cost of less than $2 million, until builders discovered “serious structural design issues” in mid-2016 that halted works.

A concept plan has now been developed for Maribyrnong council by Four18 Architecture, detailing a new two-storey, 87-space centre to be built on the site. Plans include one 33-place room, one 22-place room and two 16-place rooms. A cost estimate for the plans indicates a total sum of close to $5 million (excluding GST) to design, construct and fit-out the new facility, on top of more than $450,000 already spent on design, technical advice, demolition and early site works.

The project would be partly funded from the sale of the now-closed Empire Street Early Learning Centre property. An officer’s report due to be considered at last night’s council meeting notes costs could yet blow out by a further $700,000, as the builder appointed to the original project is still under contract. “The option of seeking a ministerial exemption from having to re-tender the works is being fully explored,” the report notes.

A report to the council in February had indicated a new centre could be built on the site for between $3.8 and $4.4 million. Councillors were on Tuesday night asked to endorse the concept plan and the development of a detailed design that would then be subject to a planning permit application. “If the application is approved it is anticipated that the design will be completed by December, 2017, and construction and fit-out completed in readiness for opening in 2019,” the report states.

Mayor answers claims about $1 land deal Hobsons Bay’s mayor has defended the council’s decision not to buy a large parcel of Mobil land for a sports centre, saying it would have cost a lot more than the purported offer of $1. As revealed by Star Weekly, negotiations to build a Hobsons Bay sports centre on 16.7 hectares at the corner of Maddox and Kororoit Creek roads fell through after the council declined an invitation from Mobil to tender for the development. The sports proposal, developed between five codes, included 24 tennis courts, 16 netball courts, two football ovals, four basketball

courts and four soccer pitches, one of which could double for lacrosse. Following our report, mayor Sandra Wilson released a statement that the council learnt that proceeding with the tender would have cost significantly more than the $1. “Council submitted an expression of interest with a community sports precinct in mind based on earlier indications that the land could be exchanged on a community goodwill basis,” she said. “During that EOI process, council was given access to documentation … about the land

parcel, its former uses and the detail of their commercial market process. “As a result of reviewing that information, and subsequent advice given by Mobil and its representatives that the financial commitment to proceed to the competitive tender process was significantly higher than $1, council felt that it was not feasible to proceed.” Cr Peter Hemphill, who is on the working group that developed the sports centre proposal, said the state government’s Sustainability Fund could have covered the cost of decontaminating the land.

“We could have put in a bid for $1 but we have to show how we would account for the clean-up of the land,” Cr Hemphill said. “I had talked to [Treasurer] Tim Pallas about using the tip-fee money councils pay – there is only $460 million sitting in a government reserve in this fund – for the clean-up of any contamination. “The group firmly believed it [contamination] was not a showstopper.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Clubs at bursting point By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown football clubs say they will have to start turning away players because they don’t have the facilities to cope with growing numbers, including females entering the sport. Williamstown Juniors Football Club, which uses Bayside College’s grounds, has grown from about 350 to 420 children in the past year. President Michael Furlong said by next year the club would have about 475 children playing in 21 teams, including two girls’ teams. “That’s larger than St Mary’s Primary School,” he said. “With potentially 475 players next year, we’re talking to the WRFL about potentially asking

for a Friday night program because the grounds just can’t cope with it. We’re now at a stage where possibly next year we’re going to have to say no to kids – and that’s not part of council’s strategy, to say no to kids in sport. “We have had over 33 per cent growth in playing numbers across two seasons, [using] facilities that were built back in the ’70s for five or six teams.” When the juniors transition to seniors, they often go to Williamstown CYMS Amateur Football Club, which uses Fearon Reserve. President Bill Deller said his club had grown from two teams to five over the past five-or-so years. “Next year, with an expected influx of

further players, we could possibly be looking at six men’s teams and a women’s team,” he said. “We just want to be able to provide the opportunity for Williamstown kids when they grow up, to play open-age football; also to get a women’s team up.” Mayor Sandra Wilson said the council was assessing current and future participation in sport to guide planning and investment. “We have increased access for football at Langshaws Reserve, completed an oval redevelopment at Fearon Reserve to increase its future carrying capacity and are also completing some planning work at Bayside College for future facility upgrades,” she said. Fifty-five cats have been removed from a house in Williamstown that has been described as “unfit for human habitation”. Nathan Miles, the founder of Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue, said he received a call on Friday night from a woman asking to have 60 cats removed from her home. Mr Miles said the rescued cats were being assessed at The Lost Dogs Home. “It’s a tragic situation,” he said. “They’re in shocking condition … they were living in putrid conditions covered in urine and faeces, in absolute squalor.” “Unfortunately, there are still cats in the premises.” Mr Miles said a woman at the Williamstown address denied the cats were hers, so they were taken in as strays. Dr David Cunliffe, of The Lost Dogs Home, said extra veterinary staff were called in at the weekend to assess and treat the cats. “Because of their circumstances, we are holding them as stray cats for eight days,” he said. “However, we are hoping to be able to start moving them to our adoption and foster program sooner if possible. Many of these cats have problems related to chronic cat flu, such as ulcers and eye problems. “One kitten had to be euthanised because of chronic flu and a ruptured eyeball. “It’s also vital that the human element is not forgotten and the resident receives the help they need through the council’s networks.” Hobsons Bay corporate services director Tammi Rose said that if anyone became aware of cat hoarding, they should alert the responsible authorities, the council or RSPCA. Abusive Brother released By Goya Dmytryshchak A Catholic Brother who sexually abused children in the Altona area in the 1970s and ’80s was released from jail on Sunday to return to the supervision of his church in the US. Bernard Joseph Hartman, 78, a former teacher at St Paul’s College in Altona North, was jailed for three years with one year suspended for sustained sexual abuse, including penetration, of a boy and two girls as young as eight. Altona’s Mairead Ashcroft, who brought the first charge against Hartman that led to his extradition from the US, said she held concerns about his supervision by his Marianist order. “When we were in court we heard that while he was being supervised here, he was allowed to go for a 10-day holiday to Apollo Bay with the Christian Brothers over the Australia Day weekend while families were having a holiday at the beach,” Ms Ashcroft said. “So, he was exposed to children there while he was in supervision with the church. “He was freely allowed to go to the casino precinct, unsupervised. “He retains his full title, so with that full title comes power and trust that he’s not worthy of.” After the charges against Hartman in Australia became known, 19 people in the US informed the Diocese of Pittsburgh they had been abused by eight Marianist brothers, including Hartman, at North Catholic High School where he taught. Father Martin A. Solma, Provincial of the Marianist Province of the United States, told Star Weekly the allegations covered a spectrum of complaints, from “hitting on the back of the head to things more serious”. He would not disclose Hartman’s future location for privacy reasons.

“Bernard Hartman will be resident in a non-Marianist facility, specialising in direct supervision of men with significant personal issues and/or legal convictions,” Father Martin said. “The supervision is 24/7 with no external ministry of any kind or freedom of movement outside the facility. This will be his living situation for the rest of his life.

“He remains a member of the congregation just as he remains a member of his own family. “We feel that expulsion, though punitive and satisfying the desire of some for retribution, is unwise. “A living situation that is supervisory in nature, lasting for the rest of his days, is better for all concerned.”

Hard lesson for speeding drivers As children returned to school last week, Williamstown police were out in force targeting speeding drivers as part of Operation Fluro. Police nabbed 13 drivers travelling over the 40km/h limit in the school zone outside Bayside College in Kororoit Creek Road, Williamstown. First Constable Aaron De Graaff of Williamstown police said eight speeding drivers were caught on the first day of the operation. “They were all quite high speeds,” he said. “The highest one we got was 65 in a 40 zone. “Predominantly, there were six over that 15-25 kilometre range.” He said the operation aimed to protect the most vulnerable road users of all – schoolchildren. “There’s big red flashing signs saying 40, so there’s no excuses,” First Constable De Graaff said. Five speeding drivers and one unregistered motor vehicle were detected on the second day. The penalty for exceeding the speed limit by 10-24 kilometres is $317 and three demerit points. School zones have a 40km/h limit from 8-9.30am and 2.30-4pm. More operations are planned in coming weeks. Goya Dmytryshchak

Armed robbery

Police are investigating an armed robbery in West Footscray just before 1pm on Saturday. A man driving his car on Palmerston Street was stopped by two men in a Holden sedan. The men produced a weapon, assaulting the driver and stealing his mobile phone before driving away. The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

By Benjamin Millar Beloved Footscray identity Ron Palmer, 92, has died. Ronald John Palmer, widely known as “Mr Footscray”, passed away peacefully last Tuesday. The lifelong resident dedicated his life to helping the community. He joined the RAAF air crew at age 16 and went to war at the age of 18, serving for three years in the Pacific during World War II. He was the founder of the Yarraville Carols

by Candlelight and a founding member of the Save the Bulldogs committee. Mr Palmer volunteered widely and served as the chairman or president of the Footscray RSL, West Footscray Rotary Club, Footscray Historical Society, Footscray Yarraville City Band, the Footscray branch of the Australian Labor Party and a host of other organisations. He was recognised as a life member of the Footscray RSL, Western Bulldogs Football Club, Footscray Yarraville City Band and Footscray Community Arts Centre as well as the Gilmore College for Girls and the ALP.

Honours for Mr Palmer included an Order of Australia and the Australian Centenary Medal, along with recognition as Footscray citizen of the year and the Premier’s senior citizen of Victoria award. Passionate about re-greening the west, Mr Palmer led environmental campaigns across many of the area’s parks and gardens. He is survived by Marjorie, his wife of almost 60 years, and sons Stephen, David and Simon. A funeral service was held at St John’s Anglican Church in Footscray on Tuesday, followed by a wake at Maribyrnong Town Hall.

Footscray loses a favourite son

These kids can do film A video project focusing on a popular cooking program at a Yarraville school has been shortlisted for a national film award. Yarraville Special Developmental School entered The CAN teens in the Focus on Ability short film festival. The film caught the eye of the judges and has been shortlisted in the documentary category. Teacher Greg Gozdz said the project was largely driven by student Christopher. “Christopher was very interested in doing some video work – he really loves shooting video of his friends at the school,” Mr Gozdz said. “Focus on Ability was coming up so we decided to make a short film project.” The resulting five-minute film focuses on the school’s weekly canteen program, in which senior students go shopping and prepare food for other students. Mr Gozdz said the film had been a chance for the students to take pride in what they do,

while also offering a glimpse into the school for the wider community. “People don’t always really understand who we are or what we do here,” he said. “We have got some really lovely footage of the kids being relaxed and really enjoying themselves.” The Focus on Ability awards are designed to encourage filmmakers to focus on the abilities of people with disabilities. Mr Gozdz hopes people will take the time to view the school’s film online and vote for it in the viewers’ choice section. Alice in wonder of possibilities Alice Su’s father told her getting married and having children should be her priorities in life. “Dad is Chinese and mum is Vietnamese and they have very traditional views, they told me not to be too out-there, not to be too outspoken,” she said. The 27-year-old first realised she could “dream big” when a motivational speaker came to her school in year 8. “When I heard his story, I thought ‘holy moly, none of what I thought is true’,” she said. The revelation sparked a fire to educate other young people that life is what you make of it. And her own journey is the perfect example of the philosophy she’s trying to preach. Next month Ms Su will jet off to Charleston, in the US to compete in the Miss International World pageant. It follows her recent crowning as Miss International Australia, a competition she gave no thought to winning, given she isn’t the stereotypical tall, blonde pageant entrant. But she will be the first Asian-Australian to represent Australia at the pageant. Ms Su hopes her success will show other young women that there’s more to beauty than physical appearance. “Beauty isn’t just about what we look like but the love and commitment we have for others.”

The fate of 160 Sims IGA Plus Liquor supermarket staff could be known within a fortnight as administrators prepare the Footscray and Werribee stores for sale. Star Weekly reported earlier this month that grocery and hardware giant Metcash had called in administrators to manage the sale of the debt-plagued operations. Insolvency firm Rodgers Reidy has been combing through the finances, holding the first meeting of creditors last Tuesday. Star Weekly understands the operations’ debts have run well into millions of dollars, leaving a number of suppliers significantly out of pocket. But Rodgers Reidy director Shane Cremin remains positive about the potential for the stores to continue trading under new ownership. “The sales campaign is continuing – we have had a few interested parties,” he said. “Offers must be in by July 27. We will then issue another report to creditors before a second meeting around August 10. We are optimistic.” The two stores have a combined annual turnover of about $32 million. Mr Cremin confirmed interest had come from parties already operating in the grocery field. He said creditors would have the opportunity to vote on the future of the business and make their claims, but any further investigation into what led to the store’s troubles would be a matter for the liquidator. The Sims supermarkets, previously known as Self Service Wholesalers, have been under the ownership of the Sims family for decades. William Sims remains a director of the company, but another director, David Cotter, died in February this year.

Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek are inviting the community to a gala celebration marking the opening of Toyota Way, where 2300 indigenous trees and shrubs will be planted. Giant sculptures funded by Toyota and created by renowned Brooklyn artist Geoffrey Ricardo will be unveiled on the day. Titled A strange trail of beasts, spirits and guardians, it features eight figures, each about 3 metres tall, spaced along 7.5 kilometres of the trail. Brooklyn is to get an off-leash dog park by next June after $170,000 was allocated in the Hobsons Bay council budget. Brooklyn is the only suburb in Hobsons Bay without an area for dogs to run free. A fenced park will be established at Brooklyn Reserve in Cypress Avenue, where a pop-up park was trialled earlier this year. Last year, $160,000 allocated for the same project was instead diverted to create additional parking spaces in Cypress Avenue after an appropriate location for an off-leash park could not be found. Cr Tony Briffa said previous attempts to establish such a park at Lynch Road Reserve, Duane Reserve and Pipeline Reserve had all failed due to objections from residents, conflicts with existing uses or inappropriate size and location. “Brooklyn Reserve is a conveniently located, stand-alone open space with good surveillance and no residential properties backing on to it,” Cr Briffa said. “We are currently considering two locations – at the south-western and south-eastern corners of the reserve.” Community consultation to determine the precise location will start within two months.

MY PLACE John McMahon is doing everything he can to keep trugo alive in Yarraville, his home of more than 80 years. He speaks with Benjamin Millar. What is your connection with Yarraville?

I have lived in Yarraville for 85 of my 87 years. I was born in Sale and my family came to Yarraville when I was about two. I bought a block of land in Yarraville in 1952, then bought a book on how to build a house. I built my own home and raised six children and I still live here. I have seen all the growth and change. What are your early memories of the area? My father used to work at the railway crossing on Somerville Road. He was a railway man and I would sometimes go down and help out. We would ride our bikes down to the beach. There were some big quarries near here, down at Cruickshank Park. I still go for a walk down in the park and find a happy spot to be. What can you tell us about the sport of trugo, often compared to croquet? The game starts at midday and it takes an hour and a half to play a full game. One of the ladies said you must have a sense of humour to play. We have a lot of good fun, it’s like a little family. It’s an outdoor game. We go down there and have a game and a coffee and a sandwich.

When it was just the men, everybody had raisin bread after the game. When the women started, they brought about a change in our thinking and now all the clubs have sandwiches. Our season runs from September to April. Whoever has the highest average score at the end of the year is the world champion. I won it in the year 2000. How did the sport come about? The game was invented in the Newport railway workshops in 1925. The inner-west of

Melbourne is the only place where it’s played and now there are only eight teams left. We have the oldest club in the area. We were established in 1937 – before that they were playing in public parks. How did you become involved? My father used to play trugo for the Yarraville Trugo Club. I had just retired in 1991, so I said I would come down. I’ve been there ever since. When I first joined, you had to be 65 or over or retired. Over the years, we had to alter the age

and as the separate men’s and women’s teams died out, the women joined in the men’s teams. It’s the competition, but also the social side of things – the friends you meet and the socialisation you have with everyone there. I have been playing this game for 26 years now – it’s a great form of pleasure and leisure. I think it’s added an enormous number of years to my life. Where community counts in Altona Altona RSL is a club of many parts. It’s a place for great bistro food from the kitchen of head chef Chris Cox; it’s an entertainment hub with free live music on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons; it’s a great place to hold a function; and, not least, it’s a club with community welfare heavily to the fore.

lub general manager David Hanson says the club has raised $1,397,351 for the community in the past five years. “We’re a welfare, charitable and not-for-profit organisation that’s put back this amount into the Altona and wider community,” David says. “We’ve given to schools, the Cancer Council and sports clubs through to child and youth protection, Neighbourhood Watch and Mambourin – over 40 recipients all up. Community giving is a huge focus of the club. “We’re also a great club to visit for people interested in seeing war memorabilia. We often get items donated and it’s a treat for visitors to see them. “We received a painting from Point Cook artist Henk Eylman, a portrait of a young soldier who was killed in action in Afghanistan. His name is Tim Alpin – his parents came down from Queensland, as did other family from Mornington Peninsula, to see the painting hanging on the club’s wall. It was very moving for everyone.” Led by the club’s youngest ever president, Graham Williams, 53, who served in East Timor, Altona RSL performs a vital community role, with a small team of local volunteers keeping the giving wheels turning. The club is home to the Bay West Veterans Centre, which provides support for former service personnel.

“The centre opens 9am-1pm, Monday-Wednesday, and has pension officers on site to help members with their pensions and a justice of the peace with kits for powers of attorney – all at no cost,” David says. “We also have a full-time volunteer welfare officer who is available to help members and local community – which includes free lease of mobility aids

Immerse yourself in western wonders A new community festival will be born in Melbourne’s west next month to showcase art that will “envelope and transform”.

Due West creative director Zoe Beyer says the festival will feature almost 50 acts, installations, workshops and performances over the three-week period. “We’ve been keen to uncover art in unexpected places, so we’ve been thinking outside the box in terms of venues,” she says. “It is all about the art of the experience. When you participate in a piece it stays with you. That is our focus and the motivation behind the immersive aspect of the festival.” Zoe says there will be a combination of family-friendly and adult-only acts as part of the August 10-27 program. Women’s Circus, which has been operating in the west for 26 years, will host family circus workshops, while Limbs 2 Riddums will host hip-hop workshops in a very public place. Women’s Circus executive director Devon Taylor says the well-known community-based arts organisation is excited to be part of the festival, presenting its Night Circus whcih will include a fabulous aerial performance. A cosmopolitan flavour in Truganina A recent international food festival and open day was Palm Lake Resort Truganina’s way of inviting the community to explore the popular lifestyle village and have a bit of fun at the same time.

ore than 200 guests attended the event to try out the cuisine of Palm Lake Resort’s in-house chef and tour the facilities of what is one of the more popular 50-plus lifestyle villages in the west. Palm Lake Resort spokesperson Zoe Ilich-Paul says such events are held regularly. “We love hosting events with our residents,” she says. “It’s great for community atmosphere and, at the end of the day, it is great fun.” On the day of the food festival, Combo La Revelacion, a well-known Latin-American band based in Melbourne, played South American music that had everyone dancing. “Our chef did an amazing job of preparing all of the great international meals that were enjoyed by all on the day,” Zoe says. Four display homes were open for viewing and showcased the best that Palm Lake Resort at Truganina has to offer. “We’re really excited as we only have five villas left,” Zoe says. “The community we have built with the active help and participation of our residents is brilliant.” Palm Lake Resort staff and management understand the importance of providing a quality and style of living that is truly top shelf.

RoadSafe Westgate chairman Jim Giddings says his group is committed to supporting older drivers. “We can all be better drivers with a few simple things, like keeping up with new road laws and making sure our health is as good as can be,” Jim says. “Getting rid of bad driving habits and keeping our cars in good condition are other vital ingredients of safe driving.” Each expo participant can have a professional, such as a VicRoads roadworthy officer, look over their vehicle, and registered driving instructors can identify “short-cut” habits drivers may have adopted over time. A VicRoads expert will advise on tyre care; updates on health, medicine-driver interaction and road rules will be provided; and road safety questions can be asked of the Highway Patrol. Attendees will get a free carry bag packed with copies of Senior Drivers Handbook and Driving in Victoria: Rules & Responsibilities. A morning tea and light lunch will be supplied at no cost.

Talk to real estate agents and most will agree that an important thing to bear in mind when selling a house is to have a plan when it comes to pets during potential buyers’ visits. Your doggie or moggie might be the cutest, best-behaved pet around, but buyers may not agree with you. Here’s why: 1. They may be scared of certain animals or breeds. Even normally placid animals may react unpredictably and, if kids are in tow, they could become anxious. 2. Animal odours and/or stains may be a problem, so it’s essential to get carpets cleaned and deodorised. And any fur – autumn is the main shedding season – must be removed. Some buyers may be allergic to fur and who wants to admire your nice house when they’re sneezing and wheezing everywhere? 3. Fussy buyers don’t want to see litter trays, indoors and out. Have a good poke around the backyard for droppings and get rid of them. You don’t want buyers to, heaven forbid, step in it – doubly so for non pet-lovers. While you’re there, check for holes; you don’t want someone’s ankle sprained. 4. Buyers can be on alert, with an animal present, to apply extra scrutiny so repair any scratch or bite marks on wooden or other surfaces. 5. They might simply be turned off by knowing an animal lives at your place, so remove pet beds, toys, and food and drink bowls from around the house and outdoors. If you’re serious about maximising the price you get for your property, the wisest course is to temporarily relocate your furry friend during inspections. Carole Levy

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gets the skinny on Phat Chicks The arrival a specialist fried chicken eatery in West Footscray has generated spectacular interest. Partly this has been because it’s a novelty in an area that largely – though far from exclusively – is Indian when it comes to food. Unsurprisingly, the word we heard was that Phat Chicks was extremely busy right from the moment the doors opened. So the members of Team CTS cooled their heels for a week – and even then, six of us hit the place a couple of hours later on a Friday night than would normally be the case in hopes the rush hour would be over. That ploy worked, but only just, with boss lady Jenny squeezing us all on to a four-seater table. Minus drinks, and ignoring for this inaugural visit the only greenery/salad available, we all ended up paying about $20 each. I’m delighted to find the thighs ($4 each) were of the bone-in variety. They are fine, though I suspect better is to come than the sesame soy coating we get with these. I’m really impressed by our sole breast ($6.50). Not just because of the chicken and its admirable non-dryness, but also because the ordered spicy coasting is itself dry – unlike our other selections – and delivers a spice wallop. Like all our chicken, these ribs ($6) are skillfully cooked, though we find there is little by way of the zing and tingle we are expecting from “salt and vinegar” coating. Buffalo wings ($5) are tremendous – gloriously sopping wet with a zesty

Just BTW, of the other sauces ordered by our table, we all like the pickle-infused Bear sauce very much. For sides, Cajun fries ($6.50) and onion rings ($6.5) do us just great. The serves are generous and the quality high. Bennie opines that the onion rings are lacking onion flavour. I disagree, but in any case retort: “Mate, onion rings are just an excuse to eat deep-fried batter!” In our collective book, Phat Chicks is a great, big, phat winner. It’s not just that it’s all about fried chicken – there’s a heap of places doing that around Melbourne. It’s more that the range of coatings is innovative and delicious, with details such as sauces and sides also excelling. The vibe during our visit has been happy and the staff members are dealing with such profound instant popularity very well and the wait times were briefer than I had been expecting. SPORT Roosters almost blow it By Lance Jenkinson Altona Roosters coach Brandon Taunoa was left with mixed emotions after an outrageous 36-34 win by his side over Waverley Oakleigh Panthers in NRL Victoria first grade at Fregon Reserve on Saturday. For 40 minutes, the Roosters were in total command. They led 36-8 at half-time and were eyeing off a massive win. “The first half was probably the best we’ve played all year,” Taunoa said. It was Altona’s second 40 minutes that left the coach and everyone at the ground shocked. Somehow, the Roosters almost lost the game, after the Panthers piled on 26 unanswered points. The victory kept the fifth-placed Roosters finals hopes alive, but Taunoa admits his team was lucky to escape with the points. “Our boys’ second half was terrible,” he said. “We made too many errors and Waverley capitalised on them.” Altona is one of the most potent attacking forces in the league. The Roosters are ranked second for points scored, averaging 33.3 a game. But their defence has let them down time and again. “Our edge defence has cost us some games,” Taunoa said. “It’s something we’ve got to work on.” Irrespective of whether Altona reaches the finals or not, it is a young team with a bright future. Once they can sort out their defensive frailties, the Roosters will be one of the teams to beat. The club is rebuilding its depth in the junior ranks, so should be set for a sustained period of success once it reaches the top. “It’s been a good year,” Taunoa said. “We’re still a young team and learning – we just lack a bit of depth. “Once you get a few injuries, it doesn’t help because you’re just shuffling the team around every week. “All of our junior teams are doing fine and we’ve got a lot of good ones coming through.” Altona claimed the Hayden Butler Memorial Shield. Butler was a promising rugby league player who took his own life in 2015. A foundation was set up in Butler’s name to raise awareness of suicide prevention. ■ Col from Colac lost his battle with brain cancer last week and the sports community of the west is a poorer place. Col Newcombe will be remembered as a ripping bloke, with a big toothy smile and a story for every occasion. People and photography were his passions. Anyone who had dealings with him at Ascot Vale Sports and Trophies will know what a gem he was. Col loved local footy and was an encyclopaedia of leagues from Colac to Caroline Springs. The Col from Colac Gala last April was a wonderful way to show Col and his family how much he was loved and respected. My thoughts and those of many others are with his wife Cherie, daughter Taylah and his family. ■ While it is yet to be officially announced, it is common knowledge that AFL Victoria will pull the pin on the development competition from the end of this season. Several leading football identities have been quick to declare this a very poor decision. Anyone who has watched development league football knows it is different to suburban footy and can be a vital ingredient for players in making it to the elite level. Liam Picken, Dale Morris and Taylor Duryea are AFL premiership players who plied their trade at development level before making the big time. While the development competition may present financial and logistics issues for clubs, it should not be a burden for football – it should be a necessity. The hole this will create may not have an impact immediately, but it will in the long run. The noise AFL clubs will make when the talent pool for the draft becomes even shallower and more ill-equipped will be when the penny drops. Unfortunately, VFL clubs have no clout or pull in the grand scheme of things.

Seagulls triumph in low-scoring game Williamstown edged out traditional rivals Port Melbourne by three points in a Victorian Football League thriller at North Port Oval on Saturday. The Seagulls led most of the way until former player Anthony Anastasio bobbed up with a goal to put the never-say-die Borough in front at the 10-minute mark of the final term. In a low scoring affair with only 13 goals kicked between the two sides, the next goal would be the deciding one and it came through Williamstown onballer Michael Gibbons. Midfielder Willie Wheeler was the Seagulls best with a stunning 36 possessions, 17 tackles and two goals. Jason Pongracic was also a tackling machine, finishing with 17, while big man Nick Meese gave first use to the Seagulls onball unit with a whopping 67 hit outs.

The stirring victory had the Seagulls on top of the ladder on Saturday night, but Box Hill re-claimed first place with a win over Werribee on Sunday. However, it has created a handy eight-point buffer for the Seagulls in the top four ahead of a tasty encounter with Footscray at Burbank Oval this Saturday. The Bulldogs will go into the local derby on the back of a three-game winning streak. The Dogs made light work of the Coburg Lions, running out 60-point victors at the Victoria University Whitten Oval on Saturday. Lukas Webb starred for the Bulldogs with 33 disposals and four goals, while Matthew Boyd racked up a game-high 38 possessions.

■ Robin Nahas is the clubhouse leader in the race for the most striking excuse for missing a game of football. In recent weeks I have written about players missing games to attend weddings, compete in lawn bowls tournaments, umpire games and travel overseas. Robin missed the historic 250th meeting between Williamstown and Port Melbourne because his dog bit him on the face. He is off to the plastic surgeon (Robin, not the dog). Williamstown will host Footscray this week at Point Gellibrand and will be raising funds for the Les Twentyman Foundation.

Altona holds its nerve after taking a step up Altona was a small fish leaping into a tank full of sharks at the start of the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league season. It had the potential to be an unpleasant season for the newly promoted Vikings as it reacquainted with the elite clubs of Victorian lacrosse, but they have pleasantly surprised with their competitiveness at the level. “It’s gone a lot better than we expected,” Vikings president Bernard McDonald said. “We’re competing with most of the teams. “We’re dominating some games and having more shots, but we’re just not there at the point where we can finish off properly, but that will come.” With two wins and a draw from 13 rounds, Altona is on track to avoid the wooden spoon. The Vikings have a better record than two other clubs with five rounds to play. It is the performances of the inexperienced Vikings in losses against the powerhouse clubs that has provided the most encouragement. “Losing to the No. 1 side in the country in Footscray first time around was pretty good,” McDonald said. “We only went down by two goals, but could’ve got up and won.

“They’re undefeated at the moment and we would’ve been the only team to beat them if we could’ve got up.” Altona strengthened the team that won last year’s division 1 premiership with new imports Jeffrey Kratky and Michael Rhoads. Kratky, a centreman, and Rhoads, a long pole defender, have added much-needed experience to a largely young roster. “They’re straight out of the NCAA college system,” McDonald said. “They’ve come from probably training six days a week and playing the other day. “When you get people like that come down, the guys sort of step up a little bit.” The stars for Altona have been equal leading points scorers Campbell Mackinnon and Troy Martin with 29 points apiece. Mackinnon has scored 20 goals and dished off five assists, while Martin has 13 goals and 16 assists. Mackinnon was recently ruled out for the season with a broken finger, but not before leading Altona to victory over Caulfield in an inspiration act. “He broke his finger in the middle of the game and ended up playing through with it,” McDonald said.

“He pretty much won the game for us in the end.” Altona has struggled to adapt following the injury to Mackinnon, losing three games on the trot, including Saturday’s 18-8 defeat to Malvern. The Vikings will be looking to cause an upset when they hit the road to face second-placed Camberwell on Saturday. Meanwhile, Footscray’s winning streak stretched to 13 with a nail-biting 11-10 victory over Eltham at Lower Eltham Park, while Williamstown moved up a spot to third with a hard fought 9-6 win over Surrey Park at Mont Albert Reserve. The women’s state league is still two weeks away from resuming with the competition in recess due to the Women’s Lacrosse World Cup. Australia, featuring a number of western suburbs players, finished the tournament fourth after losing a thrilling bronze medal game to host nation England 10-9 in overtime. After two gut-wrenching one-kick losses, Williamstown CYMS was not about to lose in the same heartbreaking fashion for a third time in a row in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C. The CYs finally won a close one, beating Old Camberwell Grammarians by 11 points in an edge-of-your-seat clash at Fearon Reserve on Saturday. CYs coach Mathew Montebello was relieved to see his team come away with victory in a close game. “We’ve lost too many close ones this season and it’s been our own fault,” he said. “You can go back and have a look and we could actually be 9-4 if we had’ve won the close ones we’ve had.” With five rounds to go, Williamstown CYMS will have to be content with its 7-6 record, which has them in fourth place. It was an important victory over Old Camberwell in a match dubbed an ‘eight-point game’ with both sides heading into the contest with an identical 6-6 record and eyeing off a spot in the finals. By no means are CYs settled in a finals spot. They only need to look at Old Ivanhoe Grammarians, who started Saturday in third place and finished the day in sixth. The CYs will meet Old Geelong in another eight-point game between the fourth and fifth sides on the ladder at Fearon Reserve on Saturday. “Our next five games, four of the teams are sitting below us, but I think three of them have the ability to take our spot in the four,” Montebello said. “Old Geelong is one of those teams. “We’ve actually said our finals campaign, starting from last week, is an eight-week campaign. “We’re now into round two of our finals campaign because all the games are like finals games and one loss would mean we’d get pushed out and someone else goes in.” Williamstown CYMS fought back from a 20-point half-time deficit to overrun Old Camberwell. The most pleasing aspect of the comeback win for Montebello was the youngsters stepping up and playing a significant part in the victory, including Jack Noonan and Jake Slee, who kicked four goals apiece. “Normally it’s the Gray boys [Ben and Jack], or Russell Ackerly or Fin Adamson, the captain, to lift us up, but this time it was the young kids,” Montebello said. 48 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 26, 2017

“It was the younger brigade that set the standard and dragged us on, which is better because it means you’re getting a greater spread of guys who can lift us up and get us going.” Noonan was best-on-ground for Williamstown CYMS. The midfielder seems to be getting better with every outing and his form has been recognised with selection for the Western Jets in the TAC Cup and Williamstown in the VFL.

“He’s a really talented kid who the Jets initially overlooked,” Montebello said. “We managed to get him a stint with Williamstown in the VFL development league, he kicked two and did well and the Jets have picked him and he kicked three of their eight last game. “He’s super talented, he finds the footy and moves with really strong running patterns and he’s prepared to do the hard yards.”

Vikings hold on for victory Altona will live to fight another day in the Western Region Football League division 1. The Vikings came back from nine points down at three-quarter time to beat Albion by one point at J.R. Parsons Reserve. Altona seemed to be coasting at half-time, leading by 30 points. But Albion produced one of its best quarters of the year in the third, piling on 6.3 to zip to take an unlikely lead. Altona found the only goal of the last quarter and it was enough to win. Altona now faces newly promoted Caroline Springs at J.K. Grant Reserve on Saturday. Spotswood all but secured its finals double shot after a 49-point win over Wyndhamvale at Wyndhamvale South Oval. The Woodsmen were too good after half-time, piling on nine goals to four. Woodsmen captain Murray Boyd continued his stellar form with the best-on-ground display, while Charles Bettiol kicked four goals. In division 2, West Footscray claimed its second win of the campaign, downing Albanvale by 12 points. Leading by two points going into the final term, the Roosters kicked a wayward 2.12 to 2.2 in the last quarter, but it was enough to secure victory on the road at Robert Bruce Oval. Newport Power put up a real fight against ladder leader North Footscray, but could not finish the job in a 17-point loss at Bryan Martyn Oval. An upset was a possibility when the Power led by 26 points at half-time, but the Devils finished stronger with a seven-goal-to-one second half, a comeback inspired by Sam Denby-Blake, Adam Petridis and Blake Pilkington. North Footscray will do battle with in-form Manor Lakes at Hansen Reserve on Saturday, while the Power entertains West Footscray with the winner to keep their finals hopes alive. Yarraville-Seddon suffered a 13-point loss to third-placed Manor Lakes at Howqua Reserve. City cements top spot with solid attack Altona City handed out a Saturday night smacking to Geelong Rangers in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2, winning 4-1 at Kim Reserve. City entered the game knowing it had to win to keep hold of top spot and left nothing to chance with a dominant display. Captain Matthew Gray and striker Ayodeji Omoboye both fired in doubles for City. With 11 goals to his name, Omoboye moved into equal second on the league’s golden boot chart with teammate Marcus Sherif. The City duo are eight goals behind Corio star Vedran Stojanovic (19 goals), so it’s likely to be an in-house battle to finish second in the individual honour. City can strengthen their title bid when they face rivals Hoppers Crossing on the road at Grange Reserve on Saturday afternoon. The two sides are equal on points, with City’s superior goal difference the point of separation.

In men’s state league 1, top side Altona Magic took care of business with a 2-0 win over Yarraville Glory at McIvor Reserve on Saturday. Ben Clarke and Jon McShane scored goals to secure the victory for the Magic. While the Magic is eight points clear at the top, Yarraville’s inconsistent form has seen it dragged into the relegation zone. It’s a better place to be than Altona East Phoenix, who remain in the cellar after a 1-0 loss to Sydenham Park at the Paisley Park Soccer Complex. Williamstown has moved to within one point of the men’s state league 3 top two after a 1-0 victory over La Trobe University at Gray Reserve. Aleksandar Dimitrijevic scored his first goal for the Blues since June 17, taking his tally to an impressive 11 in 15 games. Melbourne City’s clash with Heidelberg Stars at Edwards Reserve was postponed in the lead up due to a death linked to the Stars. The game

was re-scheduled to be played on August 26. Laverton Park remains on track for the men’s state league 5 title, maintaining a four-point gap with a 3-1 win over Maribyrnong Greens at Laverton Park Reserve after goals to Juan Nilo, Matias Urzua and Marc Barbieri. Maidstone United lost 6-0 to Deakin Ducks at Scovell Reserve. In women’s state league 2, Maribyrnong Swifts were too good for Templestowe United, winning 3-0 at Johnson Reserve. North changes direction By Lance Jenkinson If only the season began in May for Altona North in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 west. If it could erase the opening month of the season, North would be getting nose bleeds from a lofty position on the ladder, not stuck with the middle tier of clubs. Since a point-less opening month, a four-game block where they conceded 14 goals to their own four, North has been one of the form teams of the competition, winning eight, including Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Melton Phoenix at Duane Reserve, drawing two and losing just twice in 12 rounds. Altona North president Riccardo Conte would like to turn back time to the start of April, but that’s not possible, so he can only marvel at the record since and wonder where his team would be if not for its poor start. “We essentially started the season four weeks behind because we started to inject a fair amount of talent into the squad that didn’t hit the ground until two or three rounds in, so it took a little while for the team to gel and settle,” Conte said. “Then you started to see the rewards there from round five onwards when we hit a real hot patch and started to see some good results.” Altona North is better all over the park. After averaging a goal a game in the first four, they have upped the average to 2.16 goals per game. Having conceded an embarrassing 3.5 goals per game in the first four, they have cut that back to just one per game for the next 12. All of a sudden, the smiles are back on the faces of North supporters, the team is winning and it continues its rise up the ladder. “We’re always creating enough chances, but once you’re conceding a fair amount of goals, you start to feel the pressure,” Conte said. “We built the team from the back and started to really suffocate the floodgates that opened in the first four rounds. “Once we rectified that part of the team, it allowed the front third to do what they needed to do and took the pressure off a little bit.” Altona North’s best two-week period of the season came in wins over top five outfits Bell Park and Surf Coast either side of the financial year. Both of those games were 1-0 results, which is significant considering the opposition’s scoring power. “Keeping a clean sheet in those games sends a bit of a message out to the league that we’ve rescued our season and are placed to finish top half of the table at least,” Conte said. Conte’s top half of the ladder goal is the bare minimum. There is still a tiny chance of Altona North challenging for promotion. “We’re in that undeniable position where we’re going to have to rely on results to go our way after that slow start,” Conte said. “Our intention is to keep the points ticking over.

Footscray has come back from a goal down at half-time to beat Altona 3-1 in the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league at the Footscray Hockey Centre on Saturday. Visiting Altona went into the break leading by a goal, but Footscray took control with three second-half goals from Weston Howell, Oscar Allan and Rufus McNaught-Barrington. The loss was a huge blow for Altona, which slid to sixth on the ladder, while the win keeps Footscray’s slim finals hopes alive. In women’s premier league, Footscray won a high-scoring thriller 4-3 over Altona at the Footscray Hockey Centre.
