Pay day for brave buyers A house described as the worst house in the best street just two years ago is expected to more than double in price when it goes to auction. No. 7 Alfred Place in Williamstown was sold in May 2015 for $581,000, making it the cheapest free-standing house in Williamstown at the time. Its new owners, Janna Feeney and her builder husband Stuart Innes, have completely renovated the property, keeping its heritage facade and adding a level at the rear.
Originally a one-bedroom house with the back falling down, it now has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Ms Feeney said the asking price was $1.25-$1.35 million. Sitting on a block of about 159 square metres, the Victorian cottage is listed in the Victorian heritage database as being of local historic and aesthetic significance as a rare example of a pre-1870 house, but it is not heritage protected and was nearly demolished some years ago. Historian Brian Haynes said the house dated back to the mid-1850s.

Ms Feeney said the house had been put in the too-hard basket by previous owners. “The owner before us tried to restore the front two rooms but then kind of got stuck,” she said. “We got it for a good price because I think a lot of people didn’t want to take it on. A lot of builders didn’t want to take it on because it wasn’t easy … it’s a really odd-shaped plot. “It had a lot of different angles and everything had to be made bespoke.

Commuters back in the loop By Goya Dmytryshchak After a six-year campaign, Altona Loop commuters have welcomed the return of direct city-bound services that won’t require changing trains at Newport. The new Metro timetable that starts in August will see 37 extended week-day Altona Loop services a day, meaning commuters travelling from Westona, Altona and Seaholme will be able to take one train to and from Flinders Street station. Transport for Victoria spokesman Adrian
Darwent said the extended services would stop at all stations between Laverton and Flinders Street. “There will be no changes to the Werribee line’s current stopping patterns during the peak period,” he said. “Stopping patterns between the am and pm peak will be altered so that trains from Werribee will run express from Newport to Footscray to North Melbourne.” Altona Loop Group spokeswoman Jennifer Williams said it was good news but more needed to be done.

Indigenous leader Jamie Marloo Thomas will talk about how everyone on this planet is connected at a World Environment Day show in the Planetarium at Scienceworks. In 2013, the Point Cook resident co-created the Wayapa Wuurrk foundation which focuses on taking care of the Earth as a starting point to people taking care of themselves and their communities. He will be making a presentation at a free show titled Connecting People with Nature, also featuring Museum Victoria curator Kate Phillips talking about climate change. Mr Thomas said for people to be truly well, the environment had to be well. “Wayapa talks about the interconnectivity to

Lentil As Anything in Footscray has closed. After eight years, the not-for-profit restaurant designed to help the homeless and disadvantaged in the west, has served its last supper. The shutdown follows an intense crowd-funding and community campaign to keep the Barkly Street restaurant open after it announced it was in financial dire straits earlier this year. The Lentil chain of restaurants have no set prices and a “pay-as-you-feel” philosophy. All staff are volunteers. But it is this model that has plummeted Footscray into financial ruin. Volunteer manager Hafsa Touqeer said the fault lay with freeloaders. “Footscray had always been a problem in that most people eat and then just leave,” Ms Touqeer said. “The restaurant was serving almost 200 meals a day with only 10 people making a donation towards their meal.” Ms Touqeer said those in need will be most affected. “They will be struggling now to find another place. “It’s very hard on our staff too as we are a family here.” The other four Lentil restaurants – Abbotsford, St Kilda, Thornbury and one in Sydney – are still open. Ms Touqeer urged residents saddened by the news to support the remaining restaurants. Lentil was founded by Sri Lankan-born Shanaka Fernando, who won an Australian of the Year Local Hero Award, for his work with the community. Stella Tzobanakis

Dud call on Altona beach By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona beach has become a “horrendous” mudpit in sharp contrast to eastern suburbs beaches, according to a volunteer member of Altona Yacht Club. Jo Ewen, who visits the beach daily, said she questioned Hobsons Bay council’s commitment to its maintenance, particularly at the western end of the beach near Maidstone Street. “If I was to get out of my car at any time of day, in any of the other suburbs, I would see white and yellow sand with minimal brown and black, let alone green,” she said.

“The picture that I see here right now is all green and black and grey mud and rocks. Some days I’m faced with just turning around and going home – I can’t stand it – and this is a common sentiment of people that I talk to all around Altona. “I sail with people in Williamstown, I sail with people in Altona, and everyone is just saddened by the fact that we can’t enjoy the beach the same as other people in other suburbs around Port Phillip Bay. The dog beach is in a better state.” Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the sand was mechanically sifted at least twice a week from Sargood Street to Apex Park, the most unsightly part of the beach. “The area in question is actually a natural mudflat, close to valuable seagrasses, which is only exposed during low tide,” she said. “It is a difficult area to clean and remove seaweed

from, for both environmental and logistical reasons. “That said, that area is cleaned once a week at minimum – more often if large volumes of weed are washed up, and is actually in line for renourishment works, which will include importing a large amount of sand back on to
the beach area to improve access along this area for beach walkers and to increase its general attractiveness.” She added that there was a dearth of state government funding to help with management of the municipality’s 26 kilometres of shoreline.
School wins local support Hundreds of residents have thrown their weight behind Dinjerra Primary School’s campaign to rebuild the school. More than 450 people have signed the online petition aimed at pressuring the state government into reversing its 2017-18 budget decision to not allocate $7 million to the school. Petition organiser and school council member Rayna Fahey said community support had been “very heartening”. “We have had an amazingly supportive response from the wider community,” Ms Fahey said. The school council has also written to Education Minister James Merlino, urging him to reconsider the decision and inviting him to the school to see “how desperately this funding is needed”. John Ronan, a spokesperson for Mr Merlino, said the department had not yet received the council letter and that the minister “had no immediate plans” to visit the school. Questions about funding for the school were not answered. Dinjerra is the only primary school to service Braybrook, Tottenham and Maidstone. The school council said two buildings were built in the 1960s and were designed to last 20 years. It is these buildings that need rebuilding. The school received state funding last year to plan building works. The council says construction was due to begin later this year and the new school built by the end of 2018. Stella Tzobanakis

Fight left in mothballed yard By Goya Dmytryshchak About half a dozen Williamstown shipbuilders have packed up their families and gone to Canada to work. Mark Arneill decided to stay here and has been out of work for one and a half years – ever since he was laid off from BAE Systems, where he worked nearly 30 years. He still hopes that one day work there will start up again. That dream seemed further away after the federal government last week announced its $89 billion naval shipbuilding plan, including $1.3 billion to upgrade shipyards in South Australia and Western Australia. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the shipbuilding workforce was expected to grow to about 5200 workers by the mid-to-late 2020s – with almost all of those jobs going to South Australia – and that some foreign workers would be “essential”. The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union plans to hold a rally in Williamstown to urge the government to include the dormant Williamstown shipyard in future work. Former boilermaker-turned-union organiser Leon White said that with the flick of a switch, the shipyard could be back in manufacturing. “Malcolm Turnbull said we might need to start looking at getting some shipbuilders from overseas and that’s a kick in the guts for us when there’s a perfectly good shipyard sitting here, mothballed,” Mr White said.
Mr White, who was laid off from the Williamstown yard when work dried up between government contracts, said he wouldn’t mind if the jobs went to his former workmates who had gone to Canada to stay in shipbuilding. Mr Arneill, who lives in Ardeer, lamented that he had spent his whole life acquiring skills that were “no longer viable in Victoria”.

“I worked here for 27 years,” he said, standing outside the Williamstown yard where only white-collar workers remain. “As an 18-year-old kid, I started here and my father was here before me and my son came here while I was. “I was laid off a year and a half ago and I’m struggling to find work at the moment. “I’ve got lots of skills but nowhere in Victoria I can use them. “Thirty years in a job – worked my way up, and then, bang, suddenly you’re on the dole.”

School’s art of gold An art exhibition highlighting the talents of a group of Yarraville students will be open to the public until tomorrow (May 25). The Yarraville Special Development School students, who range in age from five to 18 years-old, are showcasing their work at the school in Blackwood Street, Yarraville. Art co-ordinator Andrea Hobson said students were provided with an opportunity to create art to help promote self-esteem and confidence. “They learn through sensory and creative use of materials,” Ms Hobson said.
“They share, communicate, turn take, work on fine motor skills and make choices.” Ms Hobson said the show was also an opportunity for the students to express themselves. “They get to share their work … socialise and be recognised for their achievements in the wider community.” Some of the works are available for sale. Slow plan for Footscray’s streets By Stella Tzobanakis Speed limits in some Footscray streets could go as low as 30 kilometres per hour under a $2.54 million VicRoads project. If approved, the plan could make Maribyrnong the first council in the state to introduce the 30km/h speed limit. Yarra council is also considering slashing some street speed limits to 30km/h. The Footscray Pedestrian Safety Improvement Project focuses on the area
bounded by Moore and Market streets, Ballarat Road and Buckley Street. Geelong Road has been identified as a “priority area”. It is in response to a high number of accidents in Footscray involving pedestrians. There had been 305 crashes in Footscray involving pedestrians (including two deaths), and 84 serious injuries in a five-year period from 2000-2015, according to a council report. The accidents had been the result of jaywalking and pedestrians not using designated crossing points.

VicRoads believes lowering the speed limits will make pedestrians safer. But West Footscray resident Eddie Merrifield told last week’s council meeting he believed lowering the speed limit to 30km/h was “going a little too far”.
RACV roads and traffic manager Dave Jones said in most instances, RACV considers 40km/h an appropriate speed limit for high pedestrian areas. “Councils need to try to remove the root cause of crashes and install traffic management devices to change the speed environment of the road, not to put up a sign and hope that drivers will obey it.” If approved, the project would be funded by the Transport Accident Commission. VicRoads will put the project out for public consultation.
Meeting our bay birds Recently arrived migrants have been introduced to Hobsons Bay’s birdlife during a field trip run by Birdlife Australia and the Williamstown Community and Education Centre. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said she was making raising awareness about the area’s birds and the pressures on their habitats a priority. Last month, some of the municipality’s foreshore and waterways were recognised as key biodiversity areas in Australia. “This means that areas like Altona Coastal Park, Jawbone Reserve, Cheetham Wetlands and Truganina Swamp are now globally recognised as vital habitat for threatened plant and animal species,” Cr Wilson said. “It’s the aim of my mayoral program to raise awareness about what treasures are on our doorstep and why they are so special. “So many people come from across Melbourne, from interstate and even from overseas because they know what is here.”
Hobsons Bay regularly sees migratory shorebirds such as the curlew sandpiper, which flies distances of between 5000 and 12,000 kilometres twice every year. “Unfortunately, we had less migratory birds stop in Hobsons Bay this summer than in previous years,” Cr Wilson said. “Hopefully, it’s because many took advantage of the water inland resulting from higher rainfall. “But we need to be alert to the decline in populations of some of these birds. “It is now more important than ever that we ensure we don’t disturb their feeding grounds when they come over in spring and summer, but have the ability to admire them from a safe distance.” Goya Dmytryshchak Mayor Sandra Wilson and Turkish migrant Ayse Celik. Freemasons join chorus of dementia support Standing in the grand surrounds of Williamstown town hall, Freemasons Victoria past grand master Bob Jones marvels at his wife’s memory. His wife of 46 years, Kerry, was diagnosed with early onset dementia four years ago at age 60. “When you realise how it affects the people and the family and the friends, it’s an insidious thing,” said Mr Jones, of Williamstown Lodge. “If you chop your finger off you know you’ve got no finger; with this you just don’t know what’s going to happen the next day. The short-term memory is sometimes good, sometimes not so good. “But if you ask Kerry … we’ve just been walking through this hall here where we used to have, in the ’70s and ’80s, dances 10, 20 times a year, and she can remember all the people and the faces.” Sunshine West’s Lodge of St Mark will next month host an opera gala at Williamstown town hall to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s Australia and Dementia Research Foundation. Worshipful Master Emmanuel Marabeliotakis said he was moved to help after hearing about the efforts of Mr Jones’ son, Cameron, known as “The Running Cam”. He started running marathons after his mother was diagnosed with early-onset dementia and has so far raised more than $21,000 to fight dementia. “We saw Cameron was doing this run and we previously did a dinner dance for him at which we raised about $3000,” Mr Marabeliotakis said. “This time we thought, we’ve got so much talent in Freemasonry, we’d better start using

Yarraville crash shocks By Stella Tzobanakis A Yarraville mother and daughter are “lucky to be alive” after a car ploughed into the front of their home. The women – one in her 40s and the other in her teens – were taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with minor injuries after a car crashed into their two-storey home on Ballarat Street about 8.15pm on May 17. Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesperson Trevor Woodward said two cars were involved in a chain of events that led to the accident. One car was struck by another, which smashed into the front room of the residence. Police have issued an infringement notice to a driver for failing to give way at an
intersection. The drivers of the vehicles were not injured. Neighbour Sally Thompson said the incident was unusual in the usually quiet neighbourhood. “In the last 12 years I’ve lived here, I’ve never seen anything like that happen before,” she said. “It was quite shocking.” Ms Thompson’s son Dejan was at the scene of the accident, describing it as “hectic”. “They were lucky to be alive,” he said. The women did not want to comment on the incident. The mother was admitted to hospital but has since been discharged. The women have been unable to stay at the house as the MFB deemed it unsafe. Alternative accommodation has been arranged for them.

Grand past preserved online By Stella Tzobanakis It might be a small section of riverbank in the City of Maribyrnong, but the Footscray Wharves have a grand history. And a $10,000 online project will ensure the rich and remarkable history will be forever remembered. Project co-ordinator Peter Haffenden has described the Melbourne Living Museum of the West project as “significant” for the entire Maribrynong community.

“The project reveals a substantial heritage in the growth of Footscray,” Mr Haffenden said. “For the local community, it will be a source of pride in their area and also a very informative document.” The project involved creating a website to capture the history of the wharves. Mr Haffenden said research during the project unveiled some fascinating facts about the wharves and the surrounding area. “For example, they [residents] will probably not know that the same family that gave The Ashes to the world in 1882 – the Clarke family of Rupertswood – also presented a silver cup to the boat racing world which was won by the Footscray Rowing Club to keep, also in 1882,” he said. He said the project would also help break stereotypes about the suburb and its surrounds. “The traditional perception of Footscray over the last hundred years has been one of dark and gloomy satanic mills; it was

called ‘Smellbourne’ in the 19th century. “But it’s a suburb that had the only train line in a suburban street and the only underground train tunnel in the Melbourne urban area.” Mr Haffenden said the project had scope

Dishing the dirt on share house An ugly stoush that started with dirty dishes in a share house has wound up in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. A Footscray tenant made a claim for compensation against his landlord after a wrangle began over housekeeping issues such as a smudge on a plate and escalated to mutual intervention orders. The tenant lost the claim after explaining seven weeks of bitter co-habitation. The university student applicant claimed the landlord breached a duty under the Residential Tenancies Act to take all reasonable steps to provide quiet enjoyment. He complained he was constantly harassed over many issues and that scare tactics were used to get him out. The landlord lived in a bungalow at the back of the house shared by the applicant and two others. The tenant moved in last November. Within 10 days the landlord came to his bedroom door and yelled at him to clean up the kitchen. Animosity escalated to intervention orders and accusations of cruelty to a pet dog. The tenant gave the landlord a breach of duty notice, explaining he was unable to work at the house and was fearful of harassment when he returned home. The landlord told the tribunal he was sick of reminding the tenant to clean up and that the tenant knew what was expected before he moved in. Tribunal member Kylea Campana sided with the landlord, saying he must be able to raise the issue with the tenant, especially when it

affected other occupants. The tenant also made a claim for pain and suffering as a result of the impact on his mental health, but that was dismissed because it was outside VCAT jurisdiction. The applicant also claimed the landlord made his Maori guest uncomfortable by discussing

her heritage and cannibalism. She left, not wanting to return. The landlord called the RSPCA alleging the tenant hurt his dog. The landlord issued notice to vacate on January 2. At a first VCAT hearing on January 25, heard in the absence of the landlord, the tenant was granted $790 in compensation. The landlord sought a review and attended a rehearing, at which Ms Campana dismissed the tenant’s claim, saying he had unreasonable expectations of life in a share house. “It is clear … that this is not a harmonious household,” she said. “Being in a share house means you’re going to have some level of interruption that you wouldn’t expect if you had exclusive occupation of an entire home.” Karen Michael/Domain

Saddling up for crime Westgate highway patrol is increasing its use of motorbikes and bicycles in a bid to improve law enforcement. Westgate highway patrol unit commander Jason Templar said two-wheeled transport – including motorcycles, dirt bikes and push bikes – was one of the best ways to navigate heavy traffic and identify distractions offences, such as using a mobile phone while driving. Last week, two police officers on push bikes fined 62 people in Footscray’s CBD in one shift – double the average enforcement rate for a single shift. “You can literally ride right up next to a vehicle and people don’t realise when they see a push bike that it could be police,” Senior Sergeant Templar said.
“Footscray is a perfect example. The CBD is hard to navigate in a four-wheeled vehicle, and using our road bikes and push bikes, we’ve seen some significant gains in our enforcement of distraction offences – using phones when driving, and seatbelt offences.” Senior Sergeant Templar said the bikes were also used at Pacific Werribee to stamp out anti-social behaviour around the shopping centre. He said a number of Westgate highway patrols members – which cover Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay – were upskilling to use the road bikes. “We are unique in that we’re the only highway patrol in the state that has this capability.” Charlene Macaulay

Legendary Australian slide guitarist Dom Turner will join Nikki Brown from Ohio – the woman dubbed the “Jimi Hendrix of Sacred Steel” – in a powerhouse performance in Newport this Sunday. The Turner Brown Band is playing a gig to promote its mini-album Sliding Steel, performing at the Way Out West Roots Music Club as part of its Australian east coast tour. For the uninitiated, sacred steel is a Church-based tradition, as Turner explains. “Generally, in the south in America, in the African American churches, the music line-up is usually organ, guitar, bass and drums,” he said. He said what became known as sacred steel evolved out of African Americans playing lap steel guitar in church and “it really took off”. The mini-album was recorded in Toledo, Ohio, in August last year and crosses Southern US Church music with soul, funk and blues. “It’s very vibrant upbeat powerful gospel/blues music,” Turner said. “The lap steel guitar sounds very much like a voice – it’s very vocal-like. “With my main band, the Backsliders, I play primarily slide guitar … that’s why we connected.” They are touring as The Turner Brown Band, which also features Brown’s sisters Gloria (rhythm guitar and vocals), Belinda (bass guitar and vocals) and cousin Tomika (drums and vocals). “Nikki in particular is quite outrageous on stage,” Turner said. “They’re not only incredible musicians but they’re really amazing singers and performers as people will see if they come along.” The Turner Brown Band performs on Sunday from 2pm at Newport Bowls Club. Tickets are $25 at the door or $20 for Way Out West members.

MY PLACE Barber Doug Howie is a local legend. He’s been cutting hair in Yarraville for more than 50 years and has no plans to retire. He speaks to Stella Tzobanakis about what keeps him 72-years young and why he won’t even let a bent nail go to waste. What do you think about the changes you have seen over the years in Yarraville? It was good in the early days and it’s good now. Everything’s changed here in Yarraville; the people, the factories are closed down. It’s just a different good now. What’s the secret to staying youthful? I played a lot of sport; football and professional running … and it’s probably in the genes. Activity is the main thing. The more you do, the more you can do and the more you want to do. I keep active in this job and I walk wherever I can. I do have plenty of sleep; I sleep early … before 8pm. And I think everyone should not work seven days. I work six. Why don’t you have a phone (at the barber shop)? Because I live in the Dark Ages! You know what though, I’ve never had an appointment in 58 years so I really don’t need one!

A relatively narrow repertoire but when I get game, and stick to the recipe, I can step it up. FB: What is your signature dish? MP: It’d be a toss-up between my spag bol and butter chicken or huevos rancheros. On balance, spag bol, because I’ve customised it a bit over the years. No two are ever exactly the same. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? MP: Slow cooked beef cheeks on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes topped with salsa verde, accompanied with lashings of good red wine and then followed up with crusty, chunky apple pie and ice cream … and an appointment at the cardiologist! FB: What is your favourite food TV show and who is your favourite TV food person? MP: My favourite food TV show is MasterChef because, for all of the “journey” and “food dream” palaver, it’s still about great food. My favourite TV food person is Rick Stein. He seems still romanticised by food and full of wonder at what he finds. FB: What is your favourite food? MP: I love a good old fashioned lamb roast with gravy and heaps of roasted spuds and pumpkin. A very close second would be chunky strawberry jam on excessively buttery wholegrain toast. Recently I was at a Werribee Football Club function when I started discussing the merits of great vegetable side dishes with the club’s chief executive, Mark Penaluna. Mark is especially proud of his signature potato bake, for which his whisks in milk instead of cream and doesn’t add any cheese, giving the dish a lighter texture (his wife Narelle also assured me it’s very, very good!) It got me thinking about what people do to make their vegies stand out in the crowd, so I posed the question on Facebook. The feedback I received provided some real food for thought (excuse the pun). Sue suggested tossing chunks of sweet potato, pumpkin, cauliflower, broccoli and zucchini in olive oil, then roasting them with teriyaki sauce or maple syrup, before tossing through some baby spinach. Wayne likes adding mild sweet chilli sauce to cooked Brussels sprouts and tossing them in the pan to achieve some nice caramelisation. Hope says sautéing in garlic and a dash of fish sauce makes vegies come alive, while Maria recommends the addition of nuts, flavoured oils and a Moroccan seasoning called mingle. Adam is a fan of par boiling potatoes and roasting them among other vegies with lots of garlic and olive oil. Patrina says: “My hubby does an awesome asparagus wrapped in prosciutto.” Or you could try Nick’s suggestion: “Put chips on the bottom. Never seen kids knock over vegies so fast.” Hope that gives you some dinner time inspiration.

Making memories that count Whether you’re nana or pop, nonna or nonno, yaya or pappous, ba or ong, when you have long-distance grandchildren, you want to keep the relationship close and strong despite infrequent personal contact. Author Sharon Lovejoy tells in her book, Toad Cottages and Shooting Stars, how the simplest conversations, letters and traditions can keep the intimate bond with grandchildren flourishing across the miles. Here are just three of her suggestions that are creative and fun memory-makers, and fab ways to pile on the mortar of love to the brick wall of distance: 1 Celebrate an un-birthday Long-distance grandparents can’t always make it to their grandchild’s birthday, but the missing out – on both sides – can be solved by creating a new tradition: choose a day in the year you know suits you both to get together and declare it Unbirthday Day. Two birthdays a year is exciting for any child. Make it all about him/her, with birthday banners, a fancy cake or trip to the zoo (or whatever their interest). And, of course, a gift. 2. Letters and pictures Post them a large envelope, addressed to your grandchild’s name, and enclose a bundle of smaller unsealed envelopes with an A4 sheet of paper inside each, stamped and addressed to you. Ask their parents to encourage them to write or draw something every few weeks, then let them post them. A steady stream of letters and pictures not only keep you in their hearts and minds, but end up being a keepsake chronicle of their lives for you to share and laugh over as they reach adulthood. 3. Commemorate their visit After a visit with them at your place, use your talents to make a keepsake and reminder of what fun they had. Make a collage of photos, tickets from a show, a sketch depicting a discovery or funny moment you shared, a message of good luck for an upcoming challenge – anything, really. Glue them to brightly coloured A4 poster paper, then get it laminated and post it to them. And, hey, don’t worry about these ideas being considered old-fashioned. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir relaxes with succulent seafood and sweets... Since its early days, covered by us here, one of the loveliest things to observe about Fig & Walnut in Seddon is what a relaxed and lovely retreat it has become. It all fits with relaxing ease – including the superb garden area outside. Fig & Walnut has become one of our regulars, for coffee mostly and sweet treats, with the occasional more hefty meal included. So we’re only too happy to accept Vera’s invitation (see full disclosure below) to take her new menu for a spin. New menu? Perversely, I ignore it and go for one of the revolving specials – Brazilian seafood soup ($17). With its sprigs of coriander, I firstly think this is going to be a dish with an Asian bent. But, no, this seems firmly in the Mediterranean mold despite its South American attribution. The sensational foundation is a tomato-based broth that is extremely deep in flavour – it’s simply brilliant. In it are blobs of fresh tomato and red capsicum. In it, too, is generous bounty of seafood – medium-size prawns of superb, large-size flavour; pipis and mussels; and several nice chunks of barramdundi. This is high-quality seafood cooking, especially given the price. Danya’s vegan bowl ($19) is a bit of an odd choice for us, but we like it a lot anyway.

At its base are a heap of cold noodles and a fine house-made satay sauce, abetted by bok choy and eggplant. Even the pumpkin, normally a no-go area for us, plays a handy role by being so tender that it seems to become part of an extended dressing/ sauce, with chilli shavings adding just the right amount of zing. Fig & Walnut is a sweet treat haven, though it takes a different tack to most places by putting the accent on an oft-changing range of smaller offerings instead of a line-up of regular cakes. For example, classic almond crescents. We’ve all had them before – but rarely are they of such crumbly freshness and lemon-scented joy.

SPORT Altona’s magic loses some of its shine Lions was postponed due to renovation works at BT Connor Reserve. The Phoenix will go into its local derby against Yarraville Glory fresh after a week’s rest. Yarraville will need to lift after a 3-1 loss to North Sunshine Eagles at McIvor Reserve on Saturday. The Glory led by a goal at half-time after Keith Burch scored early, but the Eagles were too strong in the second half with Diellon Memishi firing in a hat-trick. The defeat has seen the Glory fall to 10th on the ladder. With the Phoenix sitting in 11th, it’s going to be a massive game for both sides when they square off at Paisley Park on Saturday. In state league 2, Altona City roared to a 4-0 win over Moreland United at Kim Reserve after a hat-trick to Ayodeji Omoboye.

Seagulls honour history By Lance Jenkinson Heroes of Williamstown’s 1969 VFA division 2 premiership team returned on Thursday night to share their love of the club and re-live a bit of their glory year with the current crop of players. Seagulls coach Andrew Collins said it was a fantastic opportunity for his players to connect with legends of bygone eras after they missed out on attending the club’s hall of fame dinner due to having a match the following day. “It was more about sharing the experiences of them being involved with the footy club,” Collins said. “They were saying what a great place the footy club is and talked about how wonderful it was to play with their teammates.” The bulk of Williamstown’s current team will have the chance to do the same in a touch under 50 years time, having won a premiership only two years ago. They also have a chance to create even more history this season, so it’s business as usual. After a slow start, the Seagulls are starting to become feared once more, having strung three percentage-boosting victories in a row, including Sunday’s runaway 55-point win over Richmond at Burbank Oval. Willie Wheeler capped a best-on-ground performance for the Seagulls with three goals. The Seagulls spread the goals around with 12 individual goalkickers, including three to Sam Dunell and two each to 100-gamer Adam Marcon and youngsters Lachlan Schultz and Mitch Norton. “We’ve been playing better footy,” Collins said. “Definitely Port Melbourne are setting a high standard, which is a real credit to them as a stand-alone footy team. “Northern Blues and Box Hill Hawks are two hot teams, so if you want to be a strong team in the VFL, you’ve got to be capable of playing against a professional AFL team. “It’s a great challenge, but that’s the beauty of it.” Williamstown will get another shot at an AFL-aligned club when they host Geelong Cats in their next match at Burbank Oval on June 4. In the meantime, all eyes will be on Williamstown quartet Brett Bewley, Josh Newman, Michael Gibbons and Leigh Masters, who are part of the VFL state squad to face the Western Australian Football League at North Port Oval on Saturday. “They all deserve it,” Collins said. “They’ve been in great form and three of them are very draftable players. “These are all 22-year-olds and then you have Leigh Masters who is the veteran of it.” Masters, a courageous half-forward flanker, and Gibbons, working as a midfielder-forward,

is part of the culture of suburban sport and my experiences have mostly been good-natured and settled amicably on the field. At suburban level, the opposition is generally someone you went to school with, someone you might even have played with or someone who lives nearby, and the banter is exactly that, banter. By definition, banter is playful and teasing comments, not vicious and nasty. I fully understand that in our current politically correct society there is no place for the kind of sledging that vilifies a person because of race, religion or sexual orientation. There is a line and sensible people know that, and know where that line is. While I think that there is a place for banter between combatants on the field, it is a fun part of the game, I also think it’s on its way to the history books.

is very hard to see the millions of dollars being bandied about at the elite level of our two major sports (cricket and AFL) and not feel that they have lost touch with their grassroots beginnings. Players are going for their right whack and I do not blame them. They are the show and they have only a limited time at the top. They should be rewarded for that, it is their job and we all get paid to do our jobs. The suburban clubs where all these elite players begin playing the game get little or no help financially from the ruling bodies of the game. They still rely on raising their own funds to provide the best facilities and pathway for the players of the future. The AFL and Cricket Australia say they are supporting grassroots level clubs, so where is that money going? I want to see it used to upgrade equipment and to take some of the load off clubs and parents. VFL football in the west is going well with all four teams this side of the bridge in the top eight. Port Melbourne has flourished despite its off-field issues, Werribee is going well despite five home games on the road, reigning premiers Footscray are the number one scoring side in the competition and Williamstown is rock solid. The future of the VFL in its current state remains an unanswered question. Many feel we are on the way to a full AFL reserves competition and the standalone sides such as Willy, Port and Werribee will be shunted into a super suburban competition. Financially, VFL sides have to fend for themselves. Surely, like suburban clubs, they deserve better, given the contribution they make to the game. Kevin Hillier

Altona Magic’s rivals in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 have been given a boost. Veteran steps us as Newport coach There was no need for the Newport Rams to undertake an exhaustive search for a new coach. Rams president Ben Portelli had the right person in mind in club stalwart David Asp and only needed the right answer. Asp did not take long to accept and a new era of Rams baseball was born. “He was my No. 1,” Portelli said. “When Matt [Lawman] told us that he wasn’t going to continue, I already thought about asking Dave to consider the role. “Dave and I caught up and had a discussion about what next year might look like and I asked him about a few things. “If he decided that he wasn’t up to the role, then I would’ve gone to test the market, but there’s no point going to the market if you’ve already got the guy sitting there.” Newport is an established division 1 club in the Baseball Victoria competition.
The Rams will be looking to go from a competitive and respected outfit to a contender in the coming seasons. Asp has all the experience the Rams would desire in a coach. One of the best players in the Rams history, Asp took out multiple club MVP awards and was a George Heron Trophy winner for best player in the league. While Newport is considered the home club for Asp, he has been involved with a number of other clubs, including summer league rivals Essendon, Geelong and Williamstown, and played winter ball with Lara, Melbourne University and Watsonia. “He’s got a well-rounded experience at other clubs,” Portelli said. “We understand we’re not the only ones with good ideas, so he’s bringing all the best ideas from all the other clubs that he’s played at. “He also understands our club and our
people, which is really important, especially when you’re talking about a local sporting club.” Asp’s enthusiasm for the game of baseball is what stands out. “When it’s time to go, he goes, and he’s probably the most competitive person I’ve played with,” Portelli said. “He’s extremely organised, he’s infectious, people follow him and he’s a natural leader, but he knows how to enjoy himself as well and doesn’t take life too seriously. “He’s going to teach these guys how to prepare and how to mentally switch on and how to switch off when it’s the right time.” Asp will continue as a player-coach. Jets put their hands up By Lance Jenkinson Five Western Jets young guns are in with a shot of making the final cut to represent Vic Metro at the AFL under-18 national championships. Ruck/forward Tristan Xerri, bottom-age forward Buku Khamis, co-captain Nick Stuhldreier and AFL Academy representatives Cameron Rayner and Lachlan Fogarty have made the extended training squad of 47 players and will feature in trial games to stake their claims for a berth in the final squad. Jets coach Torin Baker says all five players have been in great form in the early days of the TAC Cup season. “It’s a good reward for their performances,” he said. “It’s a lot of players goal at the start of the year to make the Vic Metro squad. When you do that, you’re giving yourself a chance to be seen and play trial matches, and if you go well there you’ll get yourself a spot in the team. “I know those five boys are excited to be in the squad.” Rayner, a dynamic forward-midfielder, hit the headlines for his best-on-ground performance in the AFL Academy’s 20th anniversary game. The Essendon Doutta Stars product lit up the MCG with three goals and 23 possessions to ensure he was a shoo-in for the Vic Metro squad. “He was genuinely the standout player in that game,” Baker said. “When you do it against the best players, it carries a lot of weight.” Inside midfielder Fogarty, from Spotswood and highly touted as part of the AFL Academy, has backed up that standing with best-on-ground efforts. “In one game with the academy, he was named their best player, and he was named our best in the first two games, so three out of the first four weeks he was named the best player,” Baker said. “He’s had a fantastic start to the year.” Stuhldreier has been one of the most consistent players for the Jets this season. The midfielder has exploded since he starred – with 34 disposals, six marks and seven tackles – against Geelong Falcons three rounds back. “He doesn’t put in many poor performances and you generally know what you’re going to get out of him, which is good to know as a coach,” Baker said. Xerri showed his potential with four goals in a trial game. The strong-marking 200-centimetre tall suffered an ankle injury following that performance and was sidelined until Sunday. “After a really strong performance, the next week in the first quarter he was injured, so he’s experienced the highs and lows of footy,” Baker said. Khamis is the only bottom-age player from the Jets to make the squad. Devils’ signal early intention North Footscray has laid down the challenge to the rest of the Western Region Football League division 2. The Devils are the outright premiership favourites after pummelling Yarraville-Seddon Eagles by 50 points in the top of the table clash at Hansen Reserve on Saturday. They remain the only undefeated side after four rounds and moved a game and percentage clear on top. North Footscray kick-started its engine with a seven goals to two opening term and never looked back. Kieran Murphy wrapped up best-on-ground honours with five goals, while Jason Butty (four goals), Tyren Montebruno (four) and Sam Crea (three) had the goal umpires on their toes. It was a disappointing day for Yarraville-Seddon, but they fought it out to win the last quarter. Jack Hargreaves posed a threat in the forward line with four goals, while Scott Miller added three. Yarraville-Seddon is still the most credible threat to North Footscray, sitting second on the ladder and already a decent sized gap on the other four sides in the six-team competition. Newport Power trailed Albanvale by 30 points at three-quarter time at Bryan Martyn Oval, but kicked 4.4 to 0.1 to almost snatch victory, falling short of a miraculous comeback by three points. In division 1, Spotswood is a perfect six from six after staving off a challenge from St Albans to win by 42 points. The top-of-the-ladder Woodsmen showed the Saints who is boss with a five-goal-to-one opening term. The Saints never went away, but Spotswood had too much firepower, led by Lachlan Fairley, who kicked five goals to take his season tally to 24 in six games. Altona carved out a solid 27-point win over newly promoted Caroline Springs at Town Centre Oval. Vikings forward Mitch Turnbull proved the difference between the two sides with seven goals. In division 3, Laverton has broken its drought with a 12-point win over Braybrook at Laverton Park Reserve. obscured by the controls. Front occupant space is more than passable, but rear room is a little tight. While much of the 2008 remains unchanged since it first arrived, the 2017 model’s engine is now a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol motor borrowed from the 308 hatchback. It offers a charming thrum with more character
than regular four-cylinder engines, but can grumble and shudder under load at low revs. The 2008 offers confident road-holding and decent composure in the bends. It doesn’t ride quite as well as we’ve come to expect from Peugeot and the little engine can feel stressed when pressed. Like many examples of this breed, the 2008
offers little to recommend it over a similarly priced conventional car such as Peugeot’s excellent 308 hatch. But those who do gravitate toward the butch styling and extra ground clearance will be happy to see Peugeot has righted the wrongs of its original model. David McCowen

hough Peugeot got plenty right with the original 2008 crossover, it freely admits some elements were wrong. The brand did an admirable job anticipating the trend for compact SUVs, beating many rivals to market when the city SUV, based on the 308 hatch, arrived in 2013. But key ingredients weren’t quite right – the entry-level model was available only as a five-speed manual, other variants were saddled with an old four-speed auto. Peugeot has reworked its line-up for 2017, replacing a choice of two transmissions and three engines with a single 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol motor mated to a six-speed automatic. Finding that the majority of baby SUV buyers were avoiding cut-price models, the brand added extra features to its 2008 Active entry point, which has climbed from $21,990 (manual) to $26,490 plus on-road costs. The new entry-level car features a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink, a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, single-zone air-conditioning and 16-inch alloy wheels. But it doesn’t have autonomous emergency braking, which is reserved for the next rung up. Customers prepared to pay $30,990 can get into a 2008 Allure, which offers 17-inch alloy wheels, sat nav, self-parking and dual-zone climate control. The top-line 2008 GT-Line uses the same engine as lesser models. The $32,990 price gets you cosmetic upgrades. On the inside, the 2008 persists with Peugeot’s odd ergonomics framed around a tiny, low-set steering wheel and highmounted driver instruments that can be
