Mr Micallef believes the car was stolen for parts. He bought it brand new in 1996. “It was the love of my life,” Mr Micallef said. “The car was so immaculate. The engine

was done up and it was a loud car. It was an eye-turner, it turned heads. “My mechanic works on it all the time and he left it inside the garage, inside the workshop, and unfortunately they rammed the rollerdoor to get it. “They didn’t want anything else; they just wanted my car. They’re scum, they are, they’re just scum.” The mechanic declined to comment. The car’s number plate is IIS SII. An Altona man who was born without legs says he was in shock after his customised car was stolen from a mechanics’ workshop on Monday night. Phillip Micallef pushes himself on a modified scooter or uses an electric mobility scooter for short journeys around Altona. For longer trips, he drives his white Commodore SS, fitted out with hand controls. “My car was at the mechanic’s overnight to be serviced today,” Mr Micallef said on Tuesday.

“And someone’s rammed the garage door and taken my car. That’s all they wanted, my car.” Mr Micallef, who spoke to Star Weekly before heading to a doctor’s appointment, said whoever took his car had stolen his independence. “I don’t know what it means at the moment because I’m still in shock because it only happened overnight,” he said. “I really don’t know what’s going to happen, I don’t know. “It was targeted because it’s a 20-year-old SS Commodore. Active Maribyrnong grants – now open!

The Active Maribyrnong grants program provides an opportunity for a range of underrepresented young people within our city to actively participate in community sport and recreation.

Council is a strong believer that promoting gender equity contributes to full and equal participation of women in all aspects of community life. We were proud to recently launch the ‘Women of the West’ film and photography project at the Bluestone Church Arts Space in Footscray.

Grants of up to $200 per child are available to assist with sports club joining fees and other related costs. Applications are now being accepted.

Fear’s rising, burglaries drop Police have moved to quell fears of home invasions in Hobsons Bay after widespread reports on social media about Apex-style gangs breaking into homes. One post, shared more than 160 times, quickly attracted comments blaming refugees. The Apex gang, as it’s called, is made up of young offenders from across Melbourne, who have become known for violent carjackings and home invasions.

But Hobsons Bay Acting Inspector Andrew Foot said there was no police intelligence on gang activity in Hobsons Bay. “Don’t believe everything you read on social media.” Crime Statistics Agency chief statistician Fiona Dowsley said there had been a significant decline in home burglaries in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong council areas (LGAs). “On average, residential burglaries in Hobsons Bay make up over two-thirds of all burglaries in this LGA, with an overall drop

Students will soon have access to doctors in a handful of inner-west high schools as part of a new state government program. Footscray City College, Braybrook College, Bayside P-12 College and Laverton P-12 College are among 100 high schools taking part in Australia’s first round Doctors in Secondary Schools program. Local doctors will visit schools up to one day a week, providing medical advice and referrals to specialists, as needed. The $43.8 million program includes $25.8 million for staff and operational costs, and $18 million to build consultation rooms within schools. Premier Daniel Andrews said happy, healthy students learn better, stay in school longer and achieve more. “We know that young people are the least likely to see a GP, so putting doctors in schools will make sure these kids have the access to healthcare they need.” Opposition education spokesman Nick Wakeling said the program risks alienating parents from the health and wellbeing of their own children. He expressed concern children as young as 12 would be able to access medical advice and treatment at school, including prescriptions for the contraceptive pill. “Like the much maligned Safe Schools program, this is yet another example of Daniel Andrews thinking he knows better than parents.” However Mr Andrews said the medical advice and treatment students will be able to access will be the same as that already available at medical clinics.

A philosopher in space Former NASA astronaut Marsha Ivins says going into space has taught her that people on Earth are all the same. Ms Ivins, who has spent 55 days in space, will be a special guest at the AstroLight Festival at Scienceworks on Saturday. She said travelling the world speaking about human space flight had changed her perception of people. “I find that no matter what country I go to, or what language, or what religion, or what nationality, people laugh at the same things and they ‘ooh’ and ‘ah’ at the same things,” she said. “You know, people are the same no matter where you put them on the planet, and I think that’s a very important lesson.” Ms Ivins is in Australia to promote the

seventh IMAX space film, A Beautiful Planet, in 3D. “It takes a big look at the earth and the human footprint that we’ve not necessarily been kind to our earth in planting.” The AstroLight Festival will also feature panel sessions with experts discussing topics from dark matter to Indigenous astronomy and how light messes with our circadian rhythms. There will also be art installations, Planetarium and Lightning Room shows, and a laser maze. The festival is from 6-10pm, with entry $20 for adults and $10 for children; booking is required. Instead, it will change over to the national ‘Emergency Alert’ telephone warning service under the direct control of the Victorian emergency services (MFB and Police).

Life spent in birth sweet By Goya Dmytryshchak If you lay every baby Dr Solomon Sahhar has ever delivered end to end, they would reach from Altona to Footscray. The Altona-based obstetrician-gynecologist is celebrating 40 years of practice, during which he has delivered more than 18,000 babies. Now 70, Dr Sahhar still remembers his first delivery at the old Queen Victoria Hospital. “We used to live in the hospital for 10 weeks, and they had special quarters there,” he said.

Man remanded over sex attacks An Altona man appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with sexually assaulting girls and women at music concerts in Melbourne. Martin Lathouwers, 30, is charged with committing six counts of sexual assault between September last year and August 6 this year. He was arrested after police circulated a photo of a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a teenage girl at a Selena Gomez concert at Margaret Court Arena on August 6. He is accused of rubbing against or inappropriately touching six females, as young as 14, at various live music venues. Police are urging any other alleged victims to come forward. They seized a computer from the house where he lives, suspecting it contains child pornography. Lathouwers applied for bail, but was remanded until September 29. “There was always a speaker there, and when a baby was ready for delivery, they’d call you and you’d have to run down to the labour ward and do it. “And it was so exciting. “I never lost that degree of excitement of going to do a delivery and being involved in it. “Just loved every moment of it, and so I always wanted to do obstetrics.” Dr Sahhar practiced in London for two years before being offered an associate professor position at a Melbourne teaching hospital. “I knocked it back,” he said. “I said, I want to work in the western suburbs where I grew up in the local state school and high school, and I just want to continue working with the people who had no specialist services whatsoever. “The hospitals didn’t run antenatal clinics at Altona, Williamstown or Werribee, so you’d go see your local doctor, whether specialist or GP, and they would deliver you.

Space to test start-up potential By Benjamin Millar Cutting-edge technology will hit the streets of Footscray, thanks to a $650,000 grant for a new ‘makerspace’. The Fab9 makerspace, or ‘hackerspace’, at the Dream Factory will be run by Inspire9, in collaboration with Melbourne’s Protoworks and Philadelphia-based NextFab. The membership-based space will have a core set of modern tools, such as 3D printers, laser cutters and an electronics lab with hardware and prototyping facilities. It will also include a virtual reality lab, wood and metal shops, and a textile and fashion

space with a focus on wearable technologies. Inspire9 chief executive Mark Balla said the grant is part of a $6.5 million pool allocated to the first round of the state government’s new $60 million start-up initiative LaunchVic. “We’re going to use the $650,000 grant to buy equipment, like really nice 3D printers, digital embroidery machines, laser cutters, welding equipment – all kinds of stuff you might use to make anything,” Mr Balla said. “The aim is to give people who want to make something a place to do that – anything from hobbyists to small businesses trying to prototype something.” Protoworks’ founder Hans Chang said

Arts-led revival on track Williamstown High School’s $3 million theatre is on track, with Building Engineering Pty Ltd appointed to complete the project. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan announced the builder’s appointment during a recent visit to the school. Building Engineering last month won a Master Builders Excellence in Construction award for the Ivanhoe Grammar School senior years building project. Williamstown High received $500,000 towards its theatre in the 2015-16 state budget. The theatre, officially known as the Performing Arts Centre of Excellence, will seat 300 people and include an art gallery and dance studio. It will be hired out at commercial rates, and also be used by students from Melbourne’s west undertaking university extension subjects.

Mr Noonan said the theatre would be a major asset for Melbourne’s west. “There is no doubt that this performing arts centre will enrich the educational experience for our local students,” he said. “Williamstown High School is one of our great local schools, and they’ve done a mighty job to get this off the ground.” Principal Gino Catalano said it had been a mammoth fundraising effort by the school community. “For stage one we’re probably $80,000 to $90,000 short; we’ve got $2.74 million,” he said. “It’s been a very ambitious but very successful community project.” The project is scheduled for completion by next March.

Students break the ice The principal and teachers at Altona P-9 College last Friday accepted an ice bucket challenge to raise money for motor neurone disease. Principal Julie Krause and vice-captain Finn Hourigan dowsed teacher Rhett Dadswell in ice-cold water. Ms Krause, who later suffered the same icy fate, said more than $2000 was raised on the day. And the students had greatly enjoyed the task. “We did our big freeze because it recognises motor neurone disease and we have a staff member with quite a history of MND in their family,” she said. “All the staff did it, so every teacher, including the principal and assistant principal … we all suffered.”

Newport’s Amanda Elmer, the staff member referred to by Ms Krause, lost her father, Harvey Sykes, and nanna to MND. Mr Sykes died in 2013 aged 64. Footballing great Neale Daniher has put MND in the spotlight, and Ms Elmer is joining a fundraising event named in his honour and dedicated to finding a cure. Ms Elmer has formed a team called Harvey’s Angels to take part in Daniher’s Drive, a four-day road trip from October 15-18 to raise awareness and funds. So far, the team has raised more than $5900. Cliff continues caring By Goya Dmytryshchak At age 90, Williamstown veteran Cliff Elliott still looks out for his mate’s wife, May McLeod, who is believed to be Australia’s oldest war widow. Mrs McLeod celebrated her 104th birthday on Saturday. Mr Elliott will this month receive his 60-year Legacy service certificate. He met Mrs McLeod’s late husband, Bill, after World War II through their common interest of snapper fishing. “He was in the army in the Middle East, I was in the air force,” Mr Elliott said. “After the war, I was in the Williamstown Sailing Club and Bill had a boat there. And then later on he came down to Werribee South, built a boat shed and built a boat down there.

“I’ve known May since I was at Bill’s 60th birthday party.” Legacy has supported more than 80,000 widows and nearly 2000 children and people with disabilities since 1923. Mebourne Legacy western branch chairman, Williamstown’s John Barber, said “Cliffy” had been sought to join Legacy because he had a large car – a Chev – and a truck. “[But] He was more interested in the Masonic Lodge,” Mr Barber said. “He went to a social function at the Masonic Lodge and the top table had scotch and cold beer but the rest of the tables only had warm beer and nothing else. Two weeks later he went to a Legacy Christmas function and there was scotch on all the tables … so he resigned from the Masonic Lodge and joined Legacy in 1956.”

A West Footscray filmmaker, who helped create the first feature film made in Vanuatu, is one step closer to landing an Oscar. Bentley Dean’s Tanna, filmed on location on the titular Pacific island and performed by the people of the Yakel tribe, has been endorsed as Australia’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2017 Academy Awards. Dean said the film he co-directed, based on a traditional song about lovers who dare to defy the ancient laws of arranged marriage, has been acclaimed around the globe since its 2015 release. “I think it’s clear that, even though it’s a very different culture and different language, there is something people will relate to at an emotional level.” Following its nomination by Screen Australia, the film will now compete with the other entrants to be shortlisted for Academy nomination. Screen Australia chief executive Graeme Mason said Tanna succeeds by transporting viewers, keeping them riveted as they dive into another world. Tanna has collected a swag of international awards, including at the Venice International Film Festival, and at the BFI London Film Festival. MY WYNDHAM Giuseppe “Joe” Inserra has lived in Laverton since 1964. He will be promoting the Victorian Seniors Festival in October, which is when he turns 80. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak at Laverton Skate Centre, which he built for his children. How has Laverton changed since you arrived in 1964?

Is there anything you don’t like? Point Cook Road is terrible.

When I came to Laverton, there was no one else in Central Avenue, there was no building. Where the Commonwealth Bank is now, there was a swamp. When they built the road in Laverton, all the stone and the soil they take off from the street they used to fill up the swamp. At the time, I bought five blocks of land for $500 each and after two years the council sent a bill for $10,000 for each block because they built sewerage, drainage, road, electricity. When I buy the first block where I live right now in Central Avenue, there was not even a train line. I owned four blocks of land where McDonald’s is. McDonald’s came with an offer I couldn’t refuse. Where Red Rooster is now, it was a chicken farm.

Do you still roller skate? Yes, rollerblade, roller skate. I learned to skate when I was 50 years old. I never ever skated before. There was a fellow, his name was Jack, and he was 80 years old or something like that, … he said, “Joe, the only thing you need to do is just listen to what I tell you and you will learn very quick and not fall down”. I told myself, “I can do it, I can do it”. I never fell down. From there, you get more courage and you get more skill. I built this place because I have two children and my sister had another daughter. What message would you give to young people?

What do you like about Laverton? I’ve got a lot of relations in Werribee and Laverton, for me, was the middle way because I go to work in all the metropolitan area. So Laverton was between Werribee and Melbourne. On my mind at the time – they were talking about how they were going to build the West Gate Bridge. Because of that, I thought, if I buy in Laverton, in 10 minutes I’m in the city.

The message I give to the people especially when they come here – a lot of the children are aged between 10 years old or younger and 20 years old – I say, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. And they say, “Oh, I don’t know”. You should think because from now on, if you get a skill and if you go to school and finish university, you have a bright future. Always, if you’ve got instruction and you’ve got more than one trade, you’ve always got a chance at more than one job.

SPORT Grand final heartbreak again for Magpies Parkside has experienced grand final heartbreak for a second year running in the WRFL division 3. The Magpies came up short on the biggest stage in a 33-point loss to new side Newport Power at Wootten Road Reserve on Saturday. Magpies coach Nick Condos was disappointed with the outcome, but put it all into perspective when looking back two years when the club nearly folded. “To come back from that and play in two grand finals is fantastic,” Condos told Star Weekly. “You win some, you lose some – today we lost and that’s OK. We’re disappointed in losing, but we’ll get back on the bike again and

give it another crack. I’m really excited to start again for next year.” Parkside went down to 17 men for 15 minutes following a yellow card to Cal Meagher. Officials from both clubs were surprised to see Meagher sent off. “What do you say?” Condos said. “It’s hard enough with 18 players on the ground let alone 17. “The umpire reckons one of our blokes put his face in another bloke’s face. “I couldn’t see it and I didn’t know what it was for until he came over.” Condos was not using the incident as an excuse.

He pointed to Parkside’s inefficiency in attack as the main difference between the sides. “If you look at the scoring shots, there’s not that much difference,” he said. “We had plenty of entries and just couldn’t fire a shot. “The scoreboard pressure is the best pressure you can put on anybody … if you don’t kick goals, you don’t win. “We did a lot of things right, but we did a lot of things wrong, too. “Whoever makes the least amount of mistakes usually wins the game.” Lance Jenkinson

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ I have to say I have liked Thursday night football during this current AFL season, and I hope I still feel that way after this week. The games earlier in the season were good and didn’t seem to throw work and family life out much. I have never been a fan of Monday night games, and the Sunday twilight game is not my favourite either. The final this Thursday is very interesting and I will be keen to see the television ratings, given the game involves the Bulldogs and the Eagles. Would I have preferred a final last weekend and not had the bye week? Yes. The bye has taken the wind out of the finals a bit for me. It was good for grassroots footy, but I will be surprised if it is repeated next year. I will be barracking very hard for the Bulldogs and hope they can progress to the next week. ■ Newport Power and Caroline Springs did create WRFL history last weekend, winning their first ever senior premiership flags. Power beat Parkside and the Lakers were too good for Yarraville Seddon. Both games were played in great spirits on the field, but some crowd problems did occur in the Division 3 game. Players can’t be blamed for the behaviour of supporters, but it is an issue for both clubs involved. Both clubs have a very strong junior component, and that is the platform for them to grow this initial success into the fabric of the clubs. Their facilities are excellent, thanks to the hard work of their committees and volunteers. The future is very bright for both, but the hard work continues as both now jump into higher divisions, where it will be challenging on and off the field to replicate this success.

Powering to a grand win By Lance Jenkinson Newport Power has shocked the western suburbs football community, winning a WRFL premiership in its first season as a senior club. The Power defied the odds in just reaching the finals, then proceeded to show why it was the best team in division 3 this season by stamping its authority on the finals. A dream debut season culminated in a 33-point win over Parkside in the division 3 grand final at Wootten Road Reserve on Saturday. Power assistant coach John Rayner said there would have been good odds available about the side at the start of the year. “I’m happy for the playing group, that they’ve got something to take out of the season, because they’ve worked hard for it,” he said. Newport’s aim at the start of the campaign was merely to be competitive. A win here and there, throw in an upset – would have been a satisfying way to start life in division 3. But the bar was quickly raised for the Power as it built momentum in the early rounds. By round 10, the Power was on top of the ladder; eight weeks later it was minor premier.

Its dominant second half of the season should be enough to convince the WRFL that 2017 should see the Power promoted to division 2. “We’d like to go up,” Rayner said. “You want to be at the best standard you can.” Newport is by no means an operation thought up overnight. The Power worked hard to re-establish football in the Newport community for 10 years in the juniors before entertaining the thought of taking the leap into seniors. Three clubs had come and gone in Newport before

the Power arrived, so this is perhaps the last chance for football to thrive at Bryan Martyn Oval. Rayner praised the efforts of Power president Stephen Martyn and the club’s committee. Assistant coach Billy Koutsoumbas and team manager Marwan Abouzied were key sounding boards for the playing group. Mark Williams, the playing coach, offered plenty as both a player and with his leadership and instruction. “He ticked all the boxes for us,” Rayner said. “His leadership, particularly over the past week, was really impressive.” Two of Newport’s prized recruits, Bassman Abdul-Wahed and Munir El Houli, were the stand-outs in the grand final. After a shaky start, Newport responded after quarter-time with five goals to nil in the second term, setting up the victory. “The whips were cracking early, but we stood up,” Rayner said. “We gradually wore them down. “Without being disrespectful to the opposition, we knew we had it done 10 minutes into the last quarter – so we could sit back and enjoy it a bit.”

■ The WRFL Division 1 Grand Final this week at Whitten Oval is a one-horse race according to most in football in the west. Deer Park will cruise to its fourth consecutive flag, a feat never done before in the former Footscray District Football League now WRFL, if the pundits are correct. Grand finals are a funny beast, and Deer Park should know better than most. Back in 2009, the Lions went into the Division 2 grand final as underdogs to Parkside. Legend has it that Parkside had premiership T-shirts printed, ready to put on for the presentation. At half-time, the favourites were 21 points up, but a storming finish by Deer Park gave the Lions the win by 21 points. I am not sure what happened to those T-shirts – I can imagine though – but the moral of the story is obvious.

A flag won the hard way By Lance Jenkinson It was a slow climb to the top of the mountain for Caroline Springs in WRFL’s division 2. The Lakers struggled early as an expansion club but showed gradual improvement each season to suggest it was a venture destined to succeed. For a club that entered the finals in third position, faced cut-throat games all post-season and had never tasted victory in a finals series let alone walk away with a flag, this will be viewed as a rapid ascent for the Lakers to get their hands on that elusive premiership cup for the first time. “We’ve grown every year. We’ve taken the steps and haven’t taken the elevator,” Lakers football manager Marc Raak told Star Weekly. “We were on the end of some beltings early on – 200-point losses and so forth – but you forget about them when you win a premiership.” Caroline Springs never hid its ambitions. The Lakers made a number of key recruiting moves in the off-season, including snapping up Brian Lake hot on the heels of an AFL premiership with Hawthorn. Lake was unveiled with fanfare at a local shopping centre. It was a partnership that has worked out brilliantly for both Lake and the club, and it looks set to continue next season. Lake is strongly favouring a return to Caroline Springs for its first season in division 1, and he could bring with him great mate and former Western Bulldogs teammate Adam Cooney, who announced his retirement at Essendon recently. “He’s [Lake] indicated to me that he’s going around again,” Raak said. “The good news is we also may get Adam Cooney to play a handful of games. He’s shown a bit of interest in playing with Brian as they’re close mates. I’m not saying it’s done, but we’re in negotiations with him.” Faced with incredibly tough opposition in minor premiers North Footscray and second-ranked Yarraville-Seddon, it was always going to be one hell of a fight for Caroline Springs to get their hands on the holy grail. Those three stand-out teams played musical chairs at the top of the ladder for most of the season, but something just clicked into place for Caroline Springs at the right time. The Lakers were one of the hottest teams in the competition for the second half of the season, but a 61-point belting from North Footscray in round 17 brought them back to earth with a thud and cast doubts in external minds over their validity as a premiership contender. That setback seemed to spur the Lakers, who drew a line in the sand from that point on, proceeded to whack Glen Orden by 120 points and built some momentum before the finals. They accepted their home-and-away ceiling would be third spot and were not intimidated

about having to go through three suddendeath games in the finals to get coach Scott Korczynski and captain Chris Bestall to stand on the premiership dais. “We actually started to believe about six or seven weeks ago that we had a real crack at winning this,” Raak said. In post-game speeches, both Korczynski and president Dean Ellis spoke of Caroline Springs

being written off in the weeks leading up to the finals, almost taking satisfaction in proving the doubters wrong. It could be Ellis’s last go around as president of Caroline Springs. It would be an incredible way for the inaugural president to go out, having led the club to promotion to the top flight for the first time.

Yarraville-Seddon is rueing the one that got away. Eagles’ midfielder Lachie Longmire was left disappointed by his side’s 14-point loss to Caroline Springs in the WRFL division 2 grand final. After a rough start and then working hard to get back into the contest, the Eagles had their fair share of chances to build a lead in the middle part of the match. But they could not turn their territorial dominance into points on the scoreboard. “I think it was in the second quarter, we probably had about 70 per cent of the possession and we just didn’t capitalise,” Longmire said. “We had it inside 50 for about 10 minutes. “There would’ve been about 10 or 15 inside 50s – then they went straight up and kicked a goal.” Ultimately, it was Yarraville-Seddon’s lacklustre start – they conceded the opening five goals of the game – that came back to haunt them. The Eagles were able to restore parity with four consecutive goals in the second term, but there were also a number of empty attacking plays. In the second half, Caroline Springs’ experience shone through. The Lakers were more composed when the game was on the line. While the defeat will stick in the craw of Eagles’ players for a while, Longmire is confident his side can bounce back next season. Lance Jenkinson

Lakers show no sign of nerves in grand final win Caroline Springs will take its place among the WRFL’s elite next season after earning promotion to the top-flight with a 14-point win over Yarraville-Seddon in a hard-fought grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. The Lakers had never experienced grand final football in their six-year history, but they showed no signs of nerves as they made all the right moves to open up an early 29-point lead late in the first quarter. Five Lakers goals were on the board – three to boom forward Mathew Sutton – before Yarraville-Seddon got a foothold in the game through a time-on goal to Scott Krakouer. The Eagles turned the game into more of a scrap, which suited their contested-ball style. But their early dominance in the second term appeared to have come unstuck when Caroline Springs went against the run of play to find key forward Brian Lake 20 metres out for a set shot he would slot 99 times out of 100.

of the game to take the lead. Chris Topalidis was the spark for Yarraville-Seddon. He was dangerous any time he went near the ball inside-50 and setting the tone with his defensive pressure. Lachie Longmire and Macauley Goring, two Eagles down on their usual output in the first quarter, sprung to life in the second. After being put under pressure for most of the second term, Jason Degabrielle goaled against the run of play for Caroline Springs. After getting the first goal of the third term through Krakouer, Yarraville-Seddon huffed and puffed inside their forward 50 for little return on the scoreboard. The Lakers made them pay, kicking the next two goals of the arm-wrestle. Young ruckman Tristan Xerri and Rex Swann Medal winner Lewis Tudor began dominating the air. Jerome Caterino was also becoming a significant factor for Caroline Springs, with

his sprint away from the contest a feature. Sutton’s fourth goal gave Caroline Springs a handy, but not insurmountable, 14-point three-quarter time lead. If Yarraville-Seddon was to mount a comeback, it had to happen early in the fourth. Instead, Lake stretched the lead out to 20 for the Lakers, then James Ryan made it 28 on the run. Goring rallied the Eagles through a tough goal from 45 metres out, then Kevin Upton’s persistence and willingness to continue to present paid dividends with two goals in five minutes. The Lakers’ lead was down to nine points. But that was as close as Yarraville-Seddon would get. Sutton kicked his fifth for the day, sparking wild celebrations among the Caroline Springs supporters. Vikings depart after giving it a real crack Altona has come within a whisker of an unlikely WRFL division 1 grand final berth. Few gave the Vikings a chance at the start of the finals, but they handed out football lessons to Spotswood and Werribee Districts in cut-throat situations before providing a scare for highly-fancied Hoppers Crossing in an absorbing preliminary final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. The Vikings walked off the ground nine-point losers, but they certainly won their share of admirers and will enter pre-season this summer with a bounce in their step. Vikings coach Saade Ghazi said the club was proud of the team’s efforts, if a little disappointed with its third-quarter showing. “We could’ve been closer at three-quarter time,” he said. “I always knew we’d come home strong … if we were a bit closer, we might have snuck home. “But you’ve got to give credit to Hoppers Crossing – they’ve had a good year and only

lost three games … they were better today for longer.” Hoppers controlled the first half, taking a 20-point lead into half-time. Altona found its groove in the third quarter, but it could only shave three points off the deficit in 30 minutes, with its downfall all its own making. While the Vikings strived to bridge the gap on the scoreboard, it proved too big a task. “The great thing is we fought it out,” Ghazi said. “The boys had a crack. We had our chances in the third quarter. We had a lot more inside-50s but couldn’t convert.” Altona finished the season as a totally different side to the one that came out of the blocks shakily with a 1-3 start to the season. The Vikings picked up nine wins from their 16 games, one better than last season, to finish one position higher in fourth. They claimed the biggest scalp of all in round six when they beat Deer Park, a side which had

thrashed them on both occasions last year. Two finals victories – both runaway wins – gave the Vikings the improvement they yearned for at the start of the campaign. “To win two finals quite easily and really challenge in the preliminary final, you’ve got to sit back and say it’s been a good year,” Ghazi said. Improvement made in 2016 will mean little when the first day of pre-season comes around in November. While the sole focus of his players have been on the finals, Ghazi has been working hard behind the scenes to set the team up for next season, which he knows will be harder again for his club now that it has pushed the grand final sides all the way. “You don’t just front up next year and think you’re going to improve,” he said. “We have to do all the hard work again.” Lance Jenkinson

Gulls fall at first hurdle By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown’s premiership defence is on shaky ground after a 46-point loss to Collingwood in a VFL qualifying final at Ikon Park on Saturday. The Seagulls will have to win three cut-throat finals in a row if they’re to defend their crown. Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon told Star Weekly his club could take a leaf out of Hawthorn’s book from last year after it went on to win the AFL premiership following a loss in week one of the finals. “All is not lost after the first week,” he said. “There’s a lot of belief in the group internally and externally, so we’ll get our confidence back up and be ready to face a good Sandringham team on Saturday.” Williamstown had an unfavourable draw, with a bye on the eve of the finals. The Seagulls were a tad lethargic in the opening term as Collingwood raced to a 17-point quarter-time lead. And it didn’t get any better for Williamstown in the second term as the Magpies kicked away to a 35-point lead at half-time, bossing the Seagulls in an area of the ground where they had been imperious in recent times. “I thought they got the ball out of stoppages better,” Dixon said. “The numbers were pretty even in the end, but they seemed to be more effective in terms of the way they moved the football.” True to form, Williamstown never gave up trying to get back into the contest. The Seagulls found their groove in the third term but couldn’t make any inroads on the scoreboard. “We knew we were going to get a response after half-time,” Dixon said. “But we kicked 2.7 and they kicked 3.1, so the scores remained the same. “We didn’t make the most of that chance to peg back the margin. “It might’ve given us greater belief if we’d gone into three-quarter time three goals down and not six.” The game petered out to a predictable conclusion with Collingwood winning handsomely. Ed Carr was best for Williamstown for his lock-down job on Magpies danger man Rupert Wills. Tim Currie, in defence, and Jack Johnstone, both as a defender and pinch-hit midfielder, were tireless workers all day for the Seagulls. Williamstown needs to brush itself off in preparation for a do-or-die encounter with Sandringham at North Port Oval on Saturday from 11.40am. The Zebras will arrive with a pep in their step after a 45-point hammering of Port Melbourne. “To beat Port Melbourne on their home deck is a huge result, so we know the challenge ahead of us,” Dixon said.

Newport eyes off 25th flag Newport is preparing for an incredible 43rd consecutive Lacrosse Victoria women’s state league grand final appearance. The Porters had to overcome a stern test against the unfancied Caulfield in the preliminary final at Caulfield Park on Sunday but prevailed 8-5 courtesy of a five-point performance from Hayley Sofarnos – three goals and two assists – and two goals each to player-coach Stacey Morlang and Sasha Pollnitz. The reigning champions now meet arch-rival Footscray in the season decider at Greenwich Reserve on Sunday at 3pm. It will give the Porters the chance to make it 25 premierships in that 43-year span. Morlang wants nothing more than to add another premiership cup to the bursting trophy cabinet. But she knows the threat Footscray poses, having seen her side go down to the Scray in the semi-final. Newport will have five of a possible six teams playing in grand finals on Sunday, which is a new club record. Meanwhile, Williamstown has booked its place in the men’s state league grand final after a 12-4 thrashing of Surrey Park at Lower Eltham Park on Saturday. It was a warning shot fired by Williamstown, which faces Footscray in the season decider at Treyvaud Memorial Park, Malvern, on Saturday at 2.45pm. Lance Jenkinson

Meanwhile, Footscray was taken to the cleaners late in a 70-point loss to Casey Scorpions in the other qualifying final at Casey Fields. The undermanned Bulldogs were competitive

until three-quarter time, but the Scorpions piled on eight goals to one in the last term. The Bulldogs will face Essendon in a semifinal at North Port Oval on Sunday from 2.40pm.

Newly crowned champion Altona Magic and co-tenant Altona East Phoenix played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the FFV men’s state league 1 at Paisley Park Soccer Complex on Saturday. It was a productive outing for both clubs – though it also left a little to be desired. The Magic has taken hold of the premiership cup, so points at this stage are not the be all and end all. But the club did want to give veteran Slave Bozinovski a victory in his last home game before retirement. There was no win for the Magic on Saturday, but Bozinovski scored the equalising goal. Yarraville Glory had a superb result on the road on Sunday, beating Western Suburbs 2-1 at Ralph Reserve. In state league 2, Altona City’s promotion hunt is over following a deflating 1-1 draw with Sporting Whittlesea at RGC Cook Reserve on Saturday.
