Lean times for lentil cafe By Benjamin Millar An iconic Footscray social enterprise could close its doors unless the community steps in and digs a little deeper. Lentil As Anything, a not-for-profit “pay what you feel” restaurant, is feeling the pinch after a lean winter. A recent Friday night in which volunteers dished up more than 150 meals returned an average payment of only $1 per plate. Restaurant manager Renae Burt said Lentil As Anything was there for her when she needed it and she was pleased to be able to return the favour.
“The thing that brings me back is the sense of belonging,” she said. “It’s a really great community here – everyone is so welcoming and it’s something bigger than any individual.” Operations manager Katrina Webb said the restaurant was always happy to feed people in need for free or a token amount, but she would like people who might be in a position to pay a little more to consider adding at least an extra gold coin. “What we say is, ‘Pay what you feel the whole experience is worth’ – the food is part of that, but so too is the music, the shelter and the smiling faces,” she said.
Lentil As Anything’s first restaurant opened in St Kilda in 2000, followed by the Abbotsford Convent in 2005 and the Footscray restaurant, in the former Barkly Hotel, in 2009. Ms Webb said the Footscray site remained crucial given the social needs in the area. “We have the ability to feed people and give them a reprieve from the cold – something with a bit more dignity than a food van,” she said. “We love our Footscray restaurant. There is an amazing team of volunteers. Often they are coming to us at a difficult time in their lives and we help them with friendship and support. We like to give them a leg up and we get some amazing outcomes.”

Ms Webb said Footscray’s Lentil As Anything has always been subsidised by other sites, but that the drain was becoming difficult to sustain. “We do need people who can to dig a little bit deeper,” she said. “Even if they add a couple of dollars – it doesn’t sound like a large amount but if half our patrons can do that it will make a big difference.” She is encouraging anyone who might not have visited Lentil as Anything before to drop in for lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch. “Come in and absorb the big picture of what it’s all about and just pay what you would have paid at any other restaurant.”

Taskforces failing: police union By Sumeyya Ilanbey A police operation cracking down on car theft and traffic offences across the north-west region this week has been described as “a knee-jerk reaction” that has come too late for an increasing crime rate. Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said Operation Prevalent, a one-week operation targeting stolen number plates, stolen vehicles, and unregistered, suspended or drink drivers, was a reflection of “the fundamental failure of taskforce policing”.
“We welcome any policing initiative that’s designed to reduce crime and improve the community’s perception for their own safety,” Mr Iddles said. “But the need to plan operations of this nature reflects the fundamental failure of taskforce policing to do little more than deal with the consequences of offending as opposed to focusing on preventing crime in the first instance.” “This is a knee-jerk reaction that has come almost too little and too late.” Mr Iddles said a more sustainable and
efficient approach to reducing and preventing crime would be to increase police numbers at stations. As part of Operation Prevalent, booze buses and automated number plate recognition equipment will be set up across Altona North, Footscray, Laverton, Werribee, Williamstown, Wyndham North, Keilor Downs, Melton, Sunshine and Caroline Springs. Inspector Wayne Newman said the operation was aimed at continuing a downward trend in traffic-related offences. “We know that the community in north-west metro divisions 2 and 3 are feeling fearful after
a number of incidents of young people breaking into homes to get access to car keys,” he said. “We want the community to know that we don’t accept this offending in our community and our response has been swift and thorough.” Inspector Newman said taskforces had been set up to investigate the spate of aggravated burglaries and carjackings, and police patrols in high-risk locations across the north-west had resulted “in a number of significant arrests”. “We are working closely… on how we can prevent youth from offending, and we’re engaging with victims.”

Golf club faces hole lot of pain Nestled in the shadows of the Westgate Bridge, Westgate Golf Club is now also existing under a cloud of doubt over its future. The club fears its ninth hole could be shortened by the state government’s $5.5 billion Western Distributor road project. Specifically, an on-ramp south of the freeway will likely shorten the ninth tee by 30 metres, a substandard length that threatens the very viability of the club. Secretary Guy Ward said the course was already compact.
“At the moment, the two golf holes we’ve got on the south side of the bridge are about as short as you can get, about as short as is practical to play,” he said. “Our worst-case scenario would see us losing so much ground on the south side of the bridge due to the new ramps that it may make our operations difficult. Golf’s one of those sports that you need nine holes as a minimum,” Mr Ward said. “A lot of little public courses have got nine holes.

The council reiterated its demand that the freeway ramps be located north of the bridge.
Braybrook’s Masters store is expected to be turned into a home improvement centre after Woolworths confirmed it will close its entire range of Masters stores this year. The company last week announced it will close all 61 Masters stores by December 11. It had flagged its exit in January following a disastrous foray into hardware trading. Braybrook became the home of Australia’s first Masters store in 2011. A Woolworths spokesman was unable to confirm how many Braybrook store staff would be redeployed or made redundant. Woolworths chief executive Brad Banducci said Woolworths would “work hard” to find Masters’ 7700 employees jobs in the group, or would pay full redundancies. “Our top priority remains to do the right thing by our employees, customers, suppliers and shareholders,” he said. “We will provide a transparent timetable to all our stakeholders during the exit process.” Woolworths and its joint venture partner, US hardware giant Lowe’s, have invested almost $3.5 billion in the failed home hardware experiment since 2009. Home Consortium (Arrium Group, Spotlight Group and Chemist Warehouse) will buy 61 Masters stores and 21 development sites. A fire sale of all Masters’ stock, estimated to be valued at more than $500 million, begins this week and will run over coming months. The company has said it will honour all customer gift cards, product warranties, returns, lay-bys and contracted home improvement projects. Benjamin Millar

Kids jazz up the carpark Children at The Range Children’s Centre in Williamstown have brightened up their carpark with help from a world-renowned mosaic artist. Altona-based artist Julee Latimer worked with four and five-year-olds to create a snake mosaic in a wall recess measuring more than four metres long. “I design and cut the tiles and basically facilitate the mosaic, but it’s actually the children’s artwork and they placed every single tile on there,” Latimer said. “This is a bit ironic because I’ve got snake phobia. “When I moved to Australia I was really nervous about seeing snakes and now it seems that a lot of the schoolwork I’ve done recently

He says Footscray firefighter Damien Burke was one of the most respected officers he has ever worked with, inspiring him to climb the ranks of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The pair worked side by side for 10 years, and Clarke was one of many shocked by news of the 53-year-old senior station officer’s death in February. To honour the father of nine, mentor and veteran of 27 years, 20 MFB and CFA firefighters are this week taking part in a 563-kilometre memorial relay. The relay started on Monday in Mildura, where Burkey had been seconded, and is due to arrive at Footscray fire station on Friday, before culminating at the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb at Crown Metropol Hotel in Melbourne on Saturday. Runners will include Mr Burke’s son, Anthony, who is also a firefighter. Mr Burke’s legacy was celebrated at the time of his death when a spontaneous tribute emblazoned the number 47 – the number of Footscray fire station – on fire trucks across the state. Mr Clarke says his mate’s death has had a profound impact on Victorian firefighters. “He was a beautiful man,” he said. “Mental health gets mentioned a lot of late. We can’t bottle things up. “Traditionally, we used black humour to get over a job, but now we know that can make it worse. We need to turn away from the belief that we’re grown men, so we can deal with it – those days are gone.” Mr Burke’s widow, Anne, said the family

feels honoured by the MFB and CFA relay. “He would be incredibly touched and maybe a little bit embarrassed by all the attention,” Mrs Burke said. “We wish that he was here to see the impact he has had on so many people.”

Motorists made Altona the worst suburb in Melbourne for litter chucked from vehicles in 2015-16. Drivers in Altona had more fines than those from any other suburb, with the EPA slugging 700 drivers for throwing rubbish out their car windows. Those found guilty copped a hefty fine, ranging from $311 for a small piece of rubbish or an unlit cigarette, to $622 for a lit cigarette. The most people were dobbed in for dropping rubbish in Altona (700 reports), followed by Melbourne (410), Altona North (299), Narre Warren (250) and Preston (230). But many perpetrators lived in postcodes other than where they were caught. Almost 200 fines were sent to Craigieburn addresses, with Werribee, Reservoir, Pakenham and Hoppers Crossing not far behind, each with at least 170 offenders. Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said the figures were concerning. “We need to make people aware that it’s not acceptable to litter, and if you get caught, there are fines. “This report shows people are sick of it … people are sick of their area being used as a rubbish dump,” he said. Unit plan no fit for hotel The state’s planning tribunal has refused to allow a three-storey apartment building next door to a live music venue at Williamstown. Mazark and Associates applied to build five dwellings with a five-car stacker at the rear of the heritage-listed Williamstown Advertiser building at 205 Nelson Place. Councillors defied their officers’ recommendation, refusing to grant a permit, stating it was an over development, there would be noise and odour issues for future residents, and waste collection arrangements and visitor parking were unacceptable. Several neighbours, including the Yacht Club Hotel, objected to the plan. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal ruled there were too many unresolved issues to allow it to proceed. VCAT member Alison Glynn said a key concern was the noise impact on future residents from live music at the Yacht Club Hotel, which is licensed until 1am most days. “Relying just on attenuated glass places heavy reliance on keeping windows and doors of the main living spaces closed,” Ms Glynn said. She said the future residents would also be affected by the hotel’s kitchen. The case against a Yarraville man embroiled in a three-year legal battle with Wyndham council over works he did at a public reserve is “an abuse of process”, his lawyer told a court this week. The council alleges Frank Grima, 60, installed a gate and laid concrete without a permit at Baileys Beach Reserve, near Werribee South, where he has leased a boat shed for the past few years. The council charged Mr Grima with a number of planning breaches in 2013 over the works. It is understood it initially issued Mr Grima an infringement notice, but later withdrew this, deciding instead to prosecute him in court. On Monday, Mr Grima pleaded guilty in Melbourne Magistrates Court to two charges of developing land by erecting the gate and laying a concrete slab, but is contesting two further charges related to other building works, including constructing a boat ramp. Barrister Julian Burnside, QC, a prominent human rights advocate, told the court on Monday that he wanted to apply for the case to be halted, saying the sheer volume of evidence involved – filling eight lever-arch binders – was “absurd”. “The case should be stayed because it is an abuse of process … it is unjustifiably and unreasonably oppressive,” Mr Burnside said. Mr Grima had undertaken works to make the road safer to drive on, he said, and had installed a gate at a point where drivers dumped their rubbish. The council’s barrister, Justin Foster, said Mr Grima was “in essence treating the [alleged developments] almost like his own kingdom”. He said Mr Grima kept keys to the gate and

Mercedes-Benz has loaned its GLE63 S Coupe to Victoria Police for 12 months to raise awareness about vehicle safety. Sergeant Aaron Prentice-Evans, of the Westgate highway patrol, said the car had just about every safety feature a vehicle could have. “Last year, road policing command approached Monash University to identify some of the safest vehicles available in Australia so we could promote the future of

A celebration of dads The contribution of Maribyrnong dads will be celebrated in a family event in Braybrook this Saturday. The free event at Braybrook library, just in time for Father’s Day, will include craft and storytime sessions, paper planes and information stalls. Maribyrnong council also wants to hear stories from fathers about what life is like bringing up children and what can be done to help them. It has devised an online survey to learn what kind of information and support dads need from the council. Brooklyn tattooist Jessica Gronow put out the word she was doing free semicolon tattoos – and got nearly 100 bookings virtually overnight. Project Semicolon was started in 2013 by a US woman named Amy Bleuel who wanted to honor the father she lost to suicide. A semicolan tattoo indicates a person may have struggled with depression, addiction, self-injury or suicide, and also represents a new beginning. Ms Gronow said it signified that a person was the “author of their life”. “And they’ve chosen to pause the sentence instead of using the full-stop and ending it,” she said. “For me, I think it means that I feel familiar with that person or relate to that person. “I’ve had mental health issues since I was 17, off and on. Even now, with my daughter, I’ve suffered from postnatal depression.” In her Rogue Ink studio, she sees many sides of life, including people in grief wanting portraits of loved ones and people wanting self-harm scars covered. “When I see the semicolon I see it as a pause,” Ms Gronow said. “I also think it’s a symbol of bravery because they’ve gotten through it instead of caving, I suppose.” St John Ambulance volunteer Jay Hateley went in for his semicolon tattoo last week. “I’m suffering from depression,” he said. “I have been for a long time, but I was good at masking it for a while. I lost a friend a couple of months ago who we didn’t realise had mental health problems. Age of 33.” “If there’s anyone out there that’s not feeling 100 per cent all together, call beyondblue, Lifeline, talk to someone.”

Short films’ big moment By Goya Dmytryshchak Two Hobsons Bay filmmakers have had their short films selected for screening at the international Joy House Film Festival in Sydney next month. Heart of a Lion, by Newport’s Tom Vogel, and Milk and Cookies, by Williamstown’s Matthew Macknamara, are among 13 films selected from 119 entries. Vogel’s film juxtaposes the life of an Australian family with that of its sponsor child Mabowezi. As the sponsor father is at a postbox sending a Brisbane Lions guernsey to Mabowezi, he’s informed by a clown that the circus is in town. The sponsor and his family are blissfully unaware of what Mabowezi endures each day, such as risking lions just to get a bucket of water. A painful awareness arises when the circus lion escapes and his children are mauled while returning from the shop with milk. The film ends with Mabowezi wearing his guernsey and kicking an empty milk carton instead of a football. Vogel said the irony of the script appealed to him. “These kids are living in the suburbs. They’ve got it good and here’s their sponsor child, he’s living amongst the lions, but they’re the ones who get attacked by a lion in the end.” Macknamara’s film, also vying for the accolade of best short film, follows the story of a doting father and husband who, after his wife dies, withdraws into a child’s world and believes Santa Claus is real. He swears to his young children that Santa will come, only to cry himself to sleep on Christmas eve exhausted from grief. He awakes in horror, having forgotten to leave his children’s presents under the tree, only to find his daughter has saved Christmas.

“The inspiration just came one Christmas morning,” Macknamara said. “I was thinking about what it’s like to be an adult grown-up not having the magic of believing in Santa and what it would be like for a grown person if they thought Santa was real.” The Joy House festival highlights films that are positive and diverse. Prizes will be awarded for best short film, best diversity short film, best WITS (women in theatre and screen) and people’s choice. The festival is at the Hoyts Mandarin Centre in Chatswood, Sydney, on September 11.

Super plan for Bunnings site Plans have been lodged for a Woolworths supermarket and seven large retail outlets on the old Bunnings site at Altona North. Original plans that included a discount department store, cinema, a sports and aquatic centre, childcare, GPs and restaurants have been changed to prevent competition with nearby businesses. Instead, developer Folkestone is proposing a 13,286-square-metre centre at 290-298 Millers Road and 24-42 Cabot Drive as the third and final stage of its Millers Junction development. In 2014, Bunnings relocated 250 metres south in Millers Road and became the anchor store of stage one of Folkestone’s development. Stage two is a business park of strata units currently being leased. Folkestone investment manager Nicole Hickling said current stage three plans were for a full-line Woolworths supermarket, seven “large format” retail stores and five smaller shops. Large format stores are bulky-good retailers similar to those in Folkestone’s stage one development, such as Officeworks, JB Hi-Fi and Repco. Hobsons Bay council supports rezoning the land. Ms Hickling said original plans that included a discount department store, cinema, restaurants and medical centre had failed to garner council support. “It’s on purpose so we don’t take away from Borrack Square or Altona Gate,” she said. Plant to save butterflies By Goya Dmytryshchak Children from Queen of Peace Primary School in Altona Meadows have planted 500 gahnia seedlings to attract the endangered Altona skipper butterfly. In its caterpillar stage, the butterfly depends on a single gahnia plant for survival – the plant is also known as the chaffy saw-sedge. Teacher Peter Carlisle said the butterfly’s natural habitat had been impacted by urban
developments across the temperate grasslands. “As part of the students’ role as stewards of the environment, we will be planting native grasses to assist the Altona skipper butterfly to nest and live beside Laverton Creek,” he said. “This project will assist the butterfly to move between its current nesting home at Cherry Lake to the Truganina wetlands.” The butterfly, named for its darting movement, has dark brown wings that fade to yellow at the base.

A new project has begun teaming Victoria University business students with African-Australian immigrants who are running small businesses. The Tailored Learning Project was inspired by the fact that many new immigrants from Africa, unable to find work, start their own micro-businesses. The ventures often struggle due to lack of business knowledge and unfamiliarity with the Australian context. A $54,000 community wellbeing grant from the Ian Potter Foundation is helping Victoria University develop a program tailored to the needs of these business operators. Twenty businesspeople and six VU students of African background will be recruited for the 12-month project, in partnership with the African Australian Small Business Association. Association president Mohamed Abdulrahman said the project was a boost to local business. “We’re committed to the success of small business starters in our community, but our resources and expertise are very limited,” he said. VU College of Business senior lecturer Rafael Paguio said the project would go beyond the traditional offering of business training and give the students valuable real-world business experience. “They will develop skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, and self-confidence to improve their graduate employability,” Dr Paguio said. MY PLACE As her beloved Western Bulldogs kick off their finals campaign, Irene Chatfield tells Benjamin Millar she has no regrets about risking it all in her fight to keep the club alive. What’s your connection with the west and how did you come to support the Western Bulldogs? We moved to Altona when I was two. The lady next door said to my mum, “If you live in Altona you have to be a Footscray supporter.” My sister and I followed in her footsteps. What do you like about the area and what would you change? I love getting down to training and supporting the boys. I would like to see more red, white and blue around the area, especially come finals time. I think the Footscray Town Hall should be covered in red, white and blue right through the year, and at finals the Bulldogs flag should be flying just below the Australian flag.
When I was 11, I started to get to the games at the Western Oval. I joined the cheer squad when I was about 12 or 13. I’ve been a member for 50 years; I got my 50-year service just the other day. I get to every game they play in Melbourne. What keeps you so involved? Everyone always talks about it as a family. The players are superb; they all come up and say hello. All those years I would jump the fence after the game as soon as the siren went. Now we’ve got Luke Beveridge as coach and he’s going to take us all the way.

When did you become such a dedicated supporter?
Why did you join the 1989 legal challenge that halted the forced merger of Footscray and Fitzroy? The solicitors said we needed a member to stand up in court and say we don’t think this is right, we weren’t informed. Thankfully, the judge wasn’t a football supporter. He gave us a chance and I just knew the supporters would stand up

and be counted. They said if you lose you will have to pay the court costs, but I said what the hell. The last time I had been in court was my divorce and I came out happy that day. What are your hopes for this year’s finals? Everyone is saying next year will be great, but I believe we’ve got as much chance of winning
this year as anyone in the eight. We have a gutsy young team and they have the passion, I believe if we get to the grand final we will win and get the flag. My mum is 91 and hasn’t been to a grand final and I want to take her this year. If they win the grand final I will just have to jump the fence and kiss Luke. I’ll have a pretty heavy scarf with all my badges but security will have to try pretty hard to catch me.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir explores the new menu of an old favourite Two Bros On Blyth at Altona has morphed from agreeable neighbourhood cafe into something much grander. A second storey has been added, a much larger downstairs kitchen installed. There are two menus in place – breakfast/ lunch and dinner – and a good deal of thought and creativity has been put into both. Lunch runs to such attractive options as smoky spice rub chicken wings with bourbon BBQ sauce ($15 for half a kilo, $24 for a kilo), pulled pork and beef melts ($15), and Reuben and Cubano sandwiches ($16). But we’re here for dinner … the upstairs dining room is not ostentatious, its hanging greenery and roomy feel makes a pleasant, tranquil space to dine. The only downside we find is that our table is too small for the multiple dishes we order, and which arrive simultaneously. We order one entree, two sides, one of the big sharing-for-two mains, and a dessert. With a couple of non-booze drinks and a coffee included, the bill comes to a few bucks over $100, which I consider good value. The service is fine. Lamb ribs ($16) are excellent, and much more meaty than other versions I’ve eaten recently. The impact of the salsa verde is negligible, but the mild, tasty chilli concoction also included fully compensates, and the cumin seasoning on the meat itself is ace. Hand-cut chips ($7) are good, though there is only the scantest trace of the listed “togarashi

Broccolini with toasted almonds and preserved lemon butter ($7) takes care of the veg. The dinner menu features three big, meaty share dishes – for two, the pork shoulder and brisket; for three or four, the whole braised lamb shoulder. Our pork shoulder with chipotle adobo and coriander sports a heavy layer of fat – which I like a lot. The tender meat and its marinade/sauce have a beguiling fruitiness and make a nice change from some of the drab pulled pork offerings that have come my way in recent years. One of our trio grumbles a bit about the $48 price tag, but I figure that this dish is listed as a share deal for two, and that $24 per person in that context is fine. Chocolate brownie ice-cream sandwich with hot fudge sauce ($12), looks a bit messy on the plate – and gets much messier very quickly. There’s no denying the intense pleasure to be had from the brownie’s crunch, the black-flecked vanilla ice-cream and the sticky sauce. Many thousands of Australian men and women have served in Australia’s defence forces – service for which Australia is thankful. But sometimes the families of those who have served need extra help – and that’s where Legacy comes in. Melbourne Legacy president Graeme Plumridge says Legacy supports defence force families through serious illnesses, injuries or deaths of loved ones. “We currently care for about 80,000 families including widows. widowers, children and disabled dependents all over Australia,” Mr Plumridge says. Involved with Melbourne Legacy since 2008, Mr Plumridge became president in March this year. Previously he was chairman of the inner-eastern branch and was treasurer and a director of Legacy Australia. “I served in the army as a national serviceman,” he says. “I was in Vietnam for 12 months and then left the military to train as an accountant. “Dad served in World War II … when he passed away, Legacy stepped in to care for mum. I am forever grateful for the support.” Connecting and supporting widows, dependents, families and children on a social and professional basis, Legacy provides individuals and families with basic needs; advocates for entitlements, rights and benefits; assists them through bereavement; and helps people move on. “For widows, Legacy is about connecting them to the community,” Mr Plumridge says. “We have 30 Legacy widows clubs in metropolitan Melbourne and each hold luncheons and have guest speakers and special guests. “Social interaction is very important – no one can relate better to another widow than a widow.
“Legacy understands that some families may just be treading water so we pay their bills, take the kids out or offer them a njury, special family outing,” Mr Plumridge says. To raise awareness and funds for the families of incapacitated and deceased veterans, the annual national appeal, Legacy Week, will run from August 28 to September 3. “Funds raised will provide essential services such as counselling, medical, advocacy and social support.” Legacy has more than 5900 volunteers nationwide, including students, defence force cadets and service personnel.
Legacy, family keep Ella fit as a fiddle She may be turning 99, but age hasn’t stopped Ella Bambery raising public awareness of other widows who have experienced the loss of a loved one due to war. Having lived in Williamstown for 88 years and being the first member of Williamstown Legacy, Ms Bambery reigns as the club’s longest-running president. “I turn 99 next month so I think I’m entitled to retire after 20 years in this post,” Ms Bambery says with a chuckle. “I met my husband at my best friend’s wedding. Harold’s brother was marrying my best friend and I was her bridesmaid. Harold always said it was love at first sight, but I wasn’t so sure,” she adds. Both Mr and Ms Bambery served during World War 2. He fought in the second, 14th Field Artillery, while she was a performer, entertaining the troops. “I was in a group called the All Sports Concert Party. We entertained troops all over Victoria. It was different and hard as I performed at night and then had to work during the day, but I loved it, probably because I’m a show-off and enjoy being on stage.” Mr Bambery died on the Kokoda Trail, leaving Ella to raise three children alone. “It was a hard time,” she recalls. “I worked as a dividend calculator at the races and then as a medical receptionist while trying to raise my two boys and a daughter. When Legacy offered their support I was extremely grateful.” One of Legacy’s missions is to provide war widows and the elderly with services that keep them active and socially connected; another is to ensure they maintain good health while being independent. “There are 30 Legacy widows’ clubs, which most of the widows attend in their local area,” says Melbourne Legacy president Graham Plumridge. “They enjoy their friends’ company and we organise weekly exercise and swimming classes, a fortnightly walking group, monthly concerts, lunches and special events. Ms Bambery adds: “I really love the ladies at the club and I look forward to seeing my Legacy friends. We’re all widows; we’ve all lost our husbands. We’ve got that in common,” she says. “We don’t speak of our loss but it’s an underlying factor that binds us together. The spirit of Legacy and the loss of our husbands unites us as one. I also enjoy my weekly game of bridge. It’s quite competitive, but I like going out; it keeps me young at heart.”

As a life member at the Williamstown Little Theatre and the Williamstown RSL and having been a volunteer at the Mercy Hospital for 13 years, Ms Bambery says it’s her positive outlook and family support that has kept her going. “I live independently and I’m fortunate that I’m so close to my family. My children are always visiting. I have six grandsons, one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter. I have great admiration for Legacy and all they’ve done for me and my family. My motto is, never look back; I think that’s my secret to [almost] reaching 99, and I’m still fit as a fiddle.”

SPORT Falcons shattered again By Tara Murray It was a familiar feeling for City West Falcons when they suffered grand final heartache in the Victorian Netball League championship on Saturday night. Having lost the previous two deciders, the Falcons lost to Melbourne University Lightning by the cruellest of margins – a single goal. A total of just four goals had separated the two teams across the clubs’ three previous matches this season, and from early on it looked liked the grand final would be another close one. When the Falcons scored the first goal of the last quarter, their leading margin was five – that would be the biggest margin of the game. The Lightning didn’t go away, scoring the next five goals to level the scores. A key turnover to the Lightning allowed it to open up a two-goal lead with several minutes remaining. That proved to be the final difference. The Falcons were unable to break the Lightning’s centre pass, with the Lightning claiming a 53-52 win.

Falcons coach Marg Lind said to go so close yet again was devastating. “We had our chances,” she said. “It was a classic grand final which could have gone either way with two evenly matched teams. We put
City West stays strong City West Falcons’ hold on the unofficial title as the Victorian Netball League’s strongest club is undiminished. Their championship side suffered a heartbreaking grand final loss but the Falcons’ division 1 side won back-to-back titles at the weekend. Their under-19 side was knocked out in the preliminary finals. The Falcons were one of two clubs, along with DC East Blaze, to have all three sides make the finals. Falcon head coach Marg Lind said the overall season had exceeded pre-season expectations. “A one, two and three finish across the grades is a good result,” she said. In the division 1 grand final, the Falcons fired late against Boroondara Express. Only one goal separated the teams at the three breaks. The Falcons made savvy line-up changes late in the game, producing their best quarter for a 56-49 win. Falcons’ co-captain Emily Post was named best on court. Lind said it had been a difficult season but she was pleased with how the club as a whole had responded to the challenges. She said the club had given a number of younger players opportunities. “To get two teams into the championship and division 1 grand finals was excellent,” she said. “We lost a few players to Ballarat after the selection process, which really affected all the teams. “It was really a test for us and has been a constant battle. Credit to the staff to get them to this point and credit to the girls who have worked really hard. “From that point of view, it’s been a good year, but it would be nice to get the championship.”

Their [Lightning] physicality in the last quarter paid off. “There was a couple of calls which were very dubious, which really hurt us, but we needed to get back on track earlier than we did.” Lind said the Falcons had focused on having a better start against the Lightning, after trailing by as many as nine goals in the semi-final between the two sides. “It was an even start,” she said. “It’s something we focused on … we played a lot better this time even though the result isn’t different – one goal. “They had a couple of calls go their way which were costly for us and it gave them momentum and we didn’t respond quick enough. “We gave ourselves a chance and we played reasonably well most of the game. “We put them in a good position with a four-goal lead into the last. “We spoke about whether we could make any other changes, but it’s hard to say as you can’t predict a couple of calls and luck.” Lightning co-captain Danielle Stewart, a former Falcons mid-courter, was named best on court.
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ With
no AFL this week the spotlight turns to local comps. It is grand final week in the WRFL’s divisions 2 and 3, with Yarraville Seddon to play Caroline Springs at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday and Newport Power to clash with Parkside at Wootten Road Reserve on Saturday. It really is the old versus the new, with founding club Parkside playing Newport in its first senior year. Caroline Springs enters its first ever grand final in senior football, while Yarraville is one of the oldest clubs in the west. The stage is set for a wonderful weekend of local footy, especially when you add the division 1 preliminary final between Altona and Hoppers Crossing. Deer Park won its way through last week and looks unbeatable for its fourth flag in a row.

AFL finals really gives our city a big lift. Those at the Werribee Football Club lunch last Sunday got an early dose of finals fever when Mike Brady entertained with his football anthems Up There Cazaly and One Day in September September. Nothing expresses the public passion about footy in this town better than those two iconic songs, and Mike is belting them out as good as ever. The Bulldogs will head to Perth to tackle the in-form Eagles in a cut-throat elimination final. It will be a tough task for the red white and blue. It was great to see former Wyndhamvale junior Jack Fitzpatrick star for the Hawks last week. He has had an unbelievable run of bad luck during his footy career with illness and injuries. I hope his match-winning goal is the turning point.
■ VFL football also heads into the finals and while Werribee won’t be part of it, they did finish the season with a win over Sandringham. Williamstown and Footscray get the double chance. The Bulldogs have been in great form of recent weeks while Williamstown is the reigning premiers and deserves to be respected. The Bulldogs will play Casey Scorpions while the Seagulls face Collingwood. The AFL week off will have no impact on Willy but the Doggies might put a few in cotton wool, especially with the first final for the AFL boys being in Perth. Does Jake Stringer get another VFL game? Under the AFL eligibility rules Will Minson can’t line up in the VFL, nor can any other player from AFL round 23. What are the Bulldogs plans with bringing back some of their injured players? Magpies seek redemption over new crew on the block Parkside will get its chance at redemption for last season’s grand final disappointment in the WRFL division 3. The Magpies return to face new boys Newport Power in the season-decider at Wootten Road Reserve on Saturday, after toppling Tarneit Titans by 26 points in the preliminary final at the same venue last Sunday. The Magpies’ return means the world to veteran coach Nick Condos, who took over the reins at the start of this season. “It’s my club – I played all my footy there,” Condos told Star Weekly. “I can’t say that it doesn’t touch every little bit of me emotionally. “They could’ve easily closed the doors to the club 12 months ago.” Parkside has moved on from the turmoil that embroiled the club before the 2015 season. The Magpies were set for promotion to division 1
before last season, only to have a mass exodus of players on the eve of the season ruin these plans. The player walkout not only put the Magpies’ season in jeopardy, but their very existence was under threat, so the WRFL allowed the club to buy time in the third division. This season has been a doozy, with teams in the top five playing musical chairs for finals positions, and no clear flag favourite days out from the grand final. “It’s the first time I’ve been involved in divvy three, and I would honestly say there were probably five teams that could’ve won it,” Condos said. “For us to get up there again, it’s just a good opportunity to have another crack.” Parkside delivered the knockout to Tarneit’s season – and possibly spared the WRFL a question over scheduling the Titans on
their home ground through the finals. A six-goal-to-two lead at half-time was just what the Magpies needed for a grand final berth. The grand final will offer up a battle of contrasts. Parkside was founded in 1897 and was a member of the WRFL in its inaugural season in 1931. They’ve won 15 premierships, including the league’s first ever, and have the experience of last year’s grand final to draw on. On the other side of the equation, Newport is a first-year senior club, but it finished the season on top of the ladder and holds a 2-1 record over Parkside this season, though the semi-final’s one-point result favoured Power. “It’s a different game and a different scenario,” Condos said. “Newport are a quality outfit. Vikings flex muscle By Lance Jenkinson Altona’s zest for finals footy has been shining through in the first two weeks of the WRFL division 1 post-season. The Vikings entered the finals with nothing to lose, qualifying in fourth spot. Despite a first-up win over Spotswood, the Vikings came into the semi-finals as underdogs. After Sunday’s convincing 44-point win over third-ranked Werribee Districts in the first semi-final at Burbank Oval, the Vikings are starting to get “greedy”, coach Saade Ghazi said. “We just can’t wait for the next one,” Ghazi told Star Weekly. “It’s what you play and coach footy for at this time of the year, to be in finals and winning games of footy and playing on big grounds, like Williamstown and Werribee. “It’s exciting, a good opportunity for the young blokes. “We have the three teams playing in preliminary finals down at Werribee next week, so we’re very proud so far of the effort. At the same time, we’re greedy and we want to win
more finals games,” Ghazi said. “We’ve won two finals and we’ve won them convincingly … obviously it gets harder with Hoppers. “We’re in a prelim final at senior level, and we’re in it to win it.” When playing assistant coach Jayden Post and midfielder Abdul Jawad – both rated in the Vikings top five in Ghazi’s estimation – went down with injury, Altona was almost instantly dismissed as a challenger. This was despite flashing their credentials with victory over premiership favourite Deer Park earlier in the year. What the Vikings needed was a lift from the collective. Ghazi sought improvement not only from the youngsters on the list, but also the more seasoned campaigners. “I think our younger group is improving and that’s exciting,” he said. “At the same time, our more experienced players are actually improving as well. “That’s what we need because we’re not going to be a club that goes out and recruits a heap of players.
“I think Jordy Robbins has improved; I know he’s probably an elite player, but I’ve had people tell me he’s improved again. “Travis Lunardi has improved, Joel Magnabosco has improved, so I think, as a coach, you want to improve your younger group, but you also want to get the best out of your senior group as well.” Altona led at every change en route to a comfortable win over Werribee Districts. For the second final in a row, Magnabosco was the Vikings’ best, while Mitch Turnbull made it 10 goals in two finals with a bag of six. Ghazi would not get drawn on the exploits of individuals, rather praising the collective. “I think why we’ve had the success that we’ve had in the finals is we’ve had a really good contribution from the 22,” he said. “Everyone has played their role.” Altona will go into its preliminary final against Hoppers Crossing at Avalon Airport Oval in Werribee on a six-day turnaround. Most teams would dread the short break, but the Vikings are jumping out of their skins for Saturday to arrive.
North Footscray was in a state of shock after being unceremoniously dumped from the WRFL division 2 finals. The Devils bowed out in dreaded straight sets after Saturday’s 70-point capitulation to Caroline Springs at Dempster Park. Devils’ co-coach Matt Walsh vowed his team would stick together, but this is not the outcome he anticipated. “We just didn’t fire a shot in the two weeks of the finals,” Walsh told Star Weekly. “We finished minor premiers, so I guess that’s what we set out to do at the start of the season. “It’s just really disappointing to not be up to it in the two finals’ games. “You look back at it and think it’s the one that got away.” A cracking preliminary final was predicted, but it turned into a fizzer. Kicking into the wind in the first quarter, a scoreless North Footscray trailed by 33 points at quarter-time, and there was no coming back from there. Caroline Springs powered away to a comfortable win, set up by eight goals from Mathew Sutton. “They’re a quality outfit; they ran us ragged, and their talls were fantastic,” Walsh said. “They certainly did their homework.” Unlike Caroline Springs, with nearly a full list to choose from, North Footscray had key players missing at exactly the wrong time of the season. Tyson Bock was out due to suspension, Lucas Hall is overseas and Max Rampling was successful in the latest intake to join the fire brigade, “They’re three of our top six players who didn’t play in the finals,” Walsh said. “It hurts, but it is what it is; you’ve got to front up with the 22 you’ve got available. “We thought they were good enough, but it didn’t eventuate.” Even with Bock, Hall and Rampling in the side, North Footscray was not winning this game. The Devils simply had too many players down. Veteran defender David Clonan, who nullified Lakers’ forward Brian Lake, was the only consistent producer for the Devils over the two weeks. “He was our best player in the finals by a country mile,” Walsh said. “There were a lot of guys who were really down over the two weeks.” Caroline Springs will face Yarraville-Seddon in the grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. Academy swimmers blitz in Canberra Caitlin Huell has raised the bar on her potential after an incredible showing at the ACT Short Course Swimming Championships. Huell was in the zone in Canberra, claiming four gold medals and clocking seven personal best times. The Maribyrnong Sports Academy student touched the wall first in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 100m butterfly. Huell takes tremendous confidence out of her performances in the nation’s capital. “It just lets me know that I’m actually improving in my swimming,” she told Star Weekly Weekly. “It helps motivate myself even more next time to beat my previous PB. “It felt really good after I finished it all, and my coaches were happy with my results. “It just felt awesome.” Huell was one of a number of Maribyrnong swimmers to bring home medals. backstroke and 100m butterfly, along with four PBs, Grace Honan took out gold in the 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 100m breaststroke, to go with two PBs, Charles Lockley won gold in the 100m breaststroke, and Dan Americo clocked four PBs. Huell puts Maribyrnong’s collective success down to the programs run at the college.
“We have this program called the athlete development program,” she said. “It just helps us students in the sports academy develop our muscles – we do weights at school, we do a recovery session one day, the next day we’ll do core, so we change it up and do a bit of variety.” Huell has also been hard at training at her home club, Wyndham Sharks. The early-rising Point Cook resident – she’s at the pool at 5.15am – credits coach Peter Botheras for a lift in her training intensity. “He’s been pushing me a lot harder, so I guess that helped a lot.” The year nine student was even more inspired watching the Australian team in action during the Olympic Games. “My life pretty much revolves around swimming at the moment,” she said. “I’d hope to make it to the Commonwealth Games trials – I’ll try to get more national qualifying times.” Lance Jenkinson
City game brings mental health to fore It’s a startling statistic – three million Australians are living with anxiety or depression, beyondblue reports. Altona City Soccer Club will take up the cause for mental health when it battles Fitzroy City in the inaugural beyondblue Cup game at Kim Reserve on September 10. “We all sort of go through those times, where we struggle here and there, so it’s a good cause for our club to get behind,” City president Joe Tanti told Star Weekly. Altona City will make this cause its annual fundraiser, and will use its last game of the season every year to raise funds for the mental health and support agency. And it will not be just the action on the pitch that will draw fans to the cause, but also the festivities in the lead-up to the game at nearby Logan Reserve. The club will put on a band, there will be a jumping castle, and the Arsenal School of Soccer will be running soccer clinics. This event is open to the public and everyone who attends will be asked to donate to the cause. Altona City can be immensely proud of what it has achieved in the FFV men’s state league 2 soccer this season. City will finish in the top four – a superb effort considering the side was third from bottom eight rounds into its first season in the division. But City wants more. It’s unlikely that it will get it – but the players won’t die wondering. With two games to go, City is three points and hefty goal difference behind second-placed Essendon Royals, but the club hasn’t given up hope of pulling off a miraculous promotion. City’s message to the Royals: If you slip up, we’re ready to pounce. “At the start of the year, our plan was to finish top four and that would’ve been a pass for us,” City president Joe Tanti told Star Weekly. “Being so close now, there’s nothing better than trying to push for promotion, so we’ll keep pushing.
“Look, anything can happen. We’ve got nothing to lose – we’ve just got to win our games, while Essendon Royals have everything to lose.” Altona City was hoping to be closer to the top-two heading into its penultimate round meeting with Sporting Whittlesea away on Saturday, but that was ruined by the Royals upset win over already crowned champion Geelong. City has warned the Royals that the three points the latter need to lock away second spot will be their hardest to obtain for the season. “We had a similar situation two years ago,” Tanti said. “We could’ve got promoted into the second division, but we lost our last game and it cost us promotion. “It happens – that’s why we’re going into the last two weeks thinking we can still get promoted and that’s the way we’re going to tackle it. “If we don’t end up getting promoted, it’s been a bloody good ride for the last half of the year.”

No matter what division City ends up playing its football next season, they are set up for sustained success after receiving commitments from coach Andy O’Dell and star striker Ayodeji Omoboye for 2017. O’Dell came into the club mid-season and immediately turned the City’s fortunes on their head. “He’s been a gem,” Tanti said. “He’s been around and he knows what second division is all about, so he knew what we needed to do. “He looked at the players we had and who we brought in … he’s playing them to the best of their ability and we haven’t looked back since.” City has fought off keen interest from rival clubs in Omoboye. He is City’s leading marksman with eight goals. “You’ve got a guy who has come to a second division club and is putting goals away each week or setting them up, so he’s obviously a person of interest,” Tanti said. “We know a few clubs were already knocking on his door and watching him last week, so we had to get that deal done and over the line.”
Altona had an exhilarating finish to Hockey Victoria’s men’s premier league season, upsetting finals-bound Hawthorn 2-1 at the State Netball and Hockey Centre. Goals to Cale Rout and Andrew Scanlon ensured the Seagulls’ season would end on a high. Footscray had a final round to forget, losing 6-1 to Camberwell, which confirmed the Bulldogs’ second-last finish. In women’s premier league, Altona settled for a 2-2 draw with Hawthorn after goals to Phoebe Rothfield and Stephanie Young. Footscray drew 1-1 with Camberwell, with Bulldog Nicola Hancock hitting the back of the net. Footscray timed its run to perfection to steal a finals double chance on the last day of the VFL season. There were two parts to the equation for the Bulldogs to secure a top-four finish. Firstly, they needed to upset the Magpies, who arrived at the Whitten Oval on a 12-game winning streak. The Bulldogs won by 32 points in a come-from-behind win on Saturday after three goals and a best-on-ground showing from youngster Bailey Dale. Then the Bulldogs needed Geelong to beat fourth-placed Port Melbourne on Sunday. The Cats did that with a 35-point victory. Footscray enters the finals as a red hot chance to go all the way. The Bulldogs have won six of their past seven matches, including wins against the top three sides. They will travel to Casey Fields for a qualifying final date with the Casey Scorpions at 2pm on Saturday. The Bulldogs beat Casey by one point in a classic at the Whitten Oval seven weeks ago.
The Bulldogs could receive a personnel boost in coming weeks with a number of Western Bulldogs scheduled to return from injury, which will create a trickle down effect. Meanwhile, Williamstown was restricted to opposition scouting at the weekend as it drew the bye in round 21. It was a comfortable weekend for the Seagulls, who could not be dislodged from third spot. The defending champions will face Collingwood in a blockbuster qualifying final at Ikon Park from 2pm on Saturday. Williamstown is once again rallying its supporters in the Hobsons Bay area and beyond. The Seagulls want fans to swamp social media by wearing blue and gold apparel and holding placards with the #WeStandAlone hashtag. It will be the Seagulls’ 11th consecutive season in VFL finals, an amazing effort considering the amount of change the club has experienced in that time, including two alignments and becoming a stand-alone powerhouse. Gators revel in glory By Lance Jenkinson Two homegrown-inspired youth league titles have given Altona Gators reason for optimism over their future in Big V basketball. The Gators have won this season’s youth league men’s and women’s division one titles with most players coming from junior ranks. Gators’ coaching director Randy Shanklin told Star Weekly the double glory came after years of hard work. “It’s been a long time coming,” he said. “A lot of these kids have grown up through our junior system and reaped the rewards. “We’ve put a lot of work into building a new culture at the club. “For those two teams to set the example has been a fantastic thing for us.” Altona had to regenerate its stocks after reaching youth league finals before. The youth league women’s team lost more than just the 2012 grand final, with 13 players seeking higher league opportunities in the following two years.
It was a similar tale on the men’s side – they won a youth league one title and moved up to the championship, but their stay in the top division was short-lived, with players defecting. With a more stable offering and both the men’s and women’s youth league teams in the championship division, the Gators should be able to hold on to their players this time around, and thrive. “For a lot of years we lost a lot of our good players to the bigger clubs, because they thought they might have a better chance to make something of themselves at a bigger club,” Shanklin said. “Now we can provide everything that the bigger club can provide. “We’ll move up to youth championship next season, and be up there with all the bigger clubs.” It was a sweet success for Altona’s youth league women’s team, coached by Shanklin and Emily Caruana, beating western rivals Werribee Devils 66-57 in the grand final at Altona Sports Centre.
Jessica Rarity peaked in the final, scoring a season-high 18 points to go with nine rebounds and six blocks. Dana Lindemann dropped 15 points and reeled in nine rebounds, while Kobe King Howea double-doubled with 11 points and 13 rebounds. “It’s an under-23 competition, and our average is 15.5 for the girls’ team, so we did extremely well this season,” Shanklin said. The men’s youth league team, coached by Craig Bennett and David Nesbitt, held on to get an 82-76 win over Whittlesea Pacers in the grand final at the Altona Sports Centre. Paul Tang was the star of the show for the Gators, with 28 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three assists, while Samson Rocker produced an efficient 19 points and eight rebounds. “I think what I’m most proud about is the majority of them are those kids who have come through our program,” Shanklin said. “David and Craig have coached some of those boys since the under 14s.”

Deer Park stalks a fourth grand final Deer Park left no stone unturned in its quest to create WRFL history. The Lions are just one win away from becoming the first division 1 team to claim a premiership four-peat. They assembled the most talented list in the competition, but also have the most professional and hard working squad to match that talent. Lions’ player-coach Marc Bullen swears by the club’s training regime, the benefits of which were on show as the Lions outlasted Hoppers Crossing for a 52-point second semi-final victory at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. “Our preparation has been first-class,” Bullen told Star Weekly. “We’ve been absolutely smashing each other on the track for the last six weeks. “You saw today, our physicality and our fitness came to the fore across the ground, which was great.” Deer Park now has a week’s break and bypasses the preliminary final. Their first session back tonight will be focused on recovery, but from Thursday onwards, it will be full steam ahead as the Lions make use of Essendon Football Club’s training base at Tullamarine. “We’ve been training at Essendon’s facility over the last couple of years,” Bullen said. “It really sets us up to make sure we don’t take the eyes off the prize on the weekend.” Deer Park should be even stronger for the grand final. Premier onballer Jack Purton-Smith is tipped to return from a hip flexor injury, while full forward Brendan Fevola continues to impress on the training track after a sternum injury. “Touch wood, we’ve come away without any injuries today,” Bullen said. “And we’ve got two A-graders back in the side for the grand final.” Deer Park’s potency in attack sets it apart from the rest of the competition. But even after kicking a winning score, Bullen reckons the Lions’ ball use inside 50 was not at the level it should be. “Our ball use forward of centre was below expectation today, so we really want to focus on that final third entry kick into the forward line over the course of the next couple of weeks, to give us a chance to put more scoreboard pressure on,” Bullen said. “Generally, we firmly think we’ve got the right balance across the forward half. “The combinations that we can put up in any given quarter is great.” Deer Park now awaits Saturday’s winner of the preliminary final between Hoppers Crossing and Altona at Avalon Airport Oval.
