A Hobsons Bay council initiative will mean lost pets that are registered and microchipped can be reunited directly with their owners instead of being impounded at the Lost Dogs Home in North Melbourne. Previously, the council sent animals to the dogs’ home, where about 63 per cent of cats and seven per cent of dogs handed in from Hobsons Bay were euthanased. The council’s latest initiative means at least 10 dogs a month are returned straight to their owners. It took just 15 minutes for Williamstown’s Sam Visser to be reunited with dogs Pippa and Minnie after a neighbour accidentally let them out. “Both our dogs are microchipped, so I got a call to say that they’d found them on Melbourne Road,” she said. Mayor Peter Hemphill urged people to register and microchip their pets. Ninety-four per cent of cats and 39 per cent of dogs picked up by rangers in Hobsons Bay are unregistered. The council is conducting doorknocks to check for unregistered animals and plans a cat microchipping and desexing day later this year. The June 16 letter seeks “an agreement with RAIDIM immediately … please advise.” Mr De Fazio said the group fired back a letter seeking more information, but is yet to receive a response. “RAIDIM is now left to question if the highly emotive wording used in Hachem’s letter – and strongly presented as the only alternative to a gambling venue – was merely to garner community support for a proposal of substantial overdevelopment with a significant lack of parking,” Mr De Fazio said. “Adara’s proposal will tower over Edgewater’s shopping precinct and provide no car spaces for its proposed 200-patron restaurant, gym,
cocktail lounge and retail shops, cafes,” he said, pointing out the impact on roads and parking. “RAIDIM would welcome a new development proposal from Adara Group that does comply with planning laws for that site, and which positively benefits Edgewater estate,” he said. Maribyrnong council planning services director Nigel Higgins said Prizac’s current permit requires the existing proposal to be completed by January 21, 2018. Residents have slammed developers for fanning concerns about pokies in order to ram through an “unacceptable” development at Maribyrnong. Residents Against Inappropriate Development in Maribyrnong (RAIDIM) president Enzo De Fazio said architecture and branding firm Hachem wrote to the group on behalf of Adara Hotels, which is negotiating the takeover of the abandoned Club Edgewater development on Edgewater Boulevard, seeking support for a new proposal. Adara is working with property developer
Prizac to vastly inflate the size of the project, left in limbo last year when the Western Bulldogs walked away from the $30 million project. They want to increase the building’s height to include 133 apartments, 70 hotel rooms, a 200-seat restaurant, gym and retail. Hachem’s letter states Adara is “a community focussed organisation” that would prefer to eliminate the gaming element of the project. “However, there is a commercial prerequisite which we are required to meet in order for Adara to develop and operate the site. “If we are unable to meet this requirement, my client will therefore withdraw and the gaming venue will be built.” 1182408-CG18-15

Altona Foreshore Work on the rock revetment wall at Cresser Reserve and the pedestrian beach access is now complete. So too is the 40 metres of reconstructed path along the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail. The works were designed to reduce the impacts of increased storm events, storm surge, sea level rise and erosion and recession. They will also protect the parkland, shared trail, roads and private infrastructure and assist in retaining a sand buffer between the waterline and revetment. The Seaholme Boat Owners Association boat ramp has been removed, in consultation with the President and club members. Pedestrian access to the Cresser Reserve jetty has been improved with new stairs and safety railing. Kayakers

and canoeists will be able to access the Bay from the Millers Road ramp. Powerboat owners, of course, are still able to launch from the Altona Boat Ramp.
Logan Reserve rust repairs The steel components on the timber combination playground at Logan Reserve have some rust corrosion due to constant sea spray. Without treatment, these components will continue to corrode. To eliminate the rust, Council will take several components off site for treatment, including steel panels, climbers, poles and the roof. The swings and spring riders will not be part of these works. During this time, the larger play area will be fenced off, while the smaller
playground remains open for use. The works are expected to be complete by the end of August.
Brooklyn Reserve playspace
In December 2015, the Melbourne Magistrates Court fined Brooklyn company Australian Tallow Producers $200,000 for air pollution offences. Hobsons Bay City Council received the proceeds of that fine to put towards a community project. Council is matching the $200,000 funding and, following great community feedback, is working on a concept plan to redevelop the playground at Brooklyn Reserve.

Newport Community Hub The Newport Community Hub will officially open on Friday 2 September. The $9.3 million project, funded by Council with some support from the Victoria Government, will include a library, maternal and child health service, youth services, seniors’ programs and the restoration of the historic Newport Mechanics Institute. Following the official opening, Council will host a community day on Saturday 3 September from 10am to 1pm with a range of free and fun activities, including roving performers, face painting, book making and craft activities, live music and more.

Digman Reserve cricket nets Works to install four new cricket nets at Digman Reserve at the corner of Douglas Parade and Hobson Street, Newport have started and will take about eight weeks to complete. The nets will replace the old nets that were removed in April. Council has consulted with sporting groups that use the oval, as well as nearby residents to determine the best placement for the new nets.

Braybrook man on terror charges A Braybrook man has become Australia’s first alleged right-wing extremist to be charged under federal anti-terrorism laws. Phillip Galea, 31, was arrested in a counterterrorism raid at a Ballarat Road property about 1pm Saturday. The alleged political extremist, linked with far-right group Reclaim Australia, has been charged on two counts of preparing to commit a terrorist act. Victoria Police counter-terrorism command assistant commissioner Ross Guenther said at a
press conference that police had been tipped off in January but swooped on Saturday because the threat to the community had escalated. “I think we’ve interrupted something that was quite serious in terms of harm to our community,” he said. “The threat was specific enough to cause us alarm.” Mr Guenther denied that the charges against Mr Galea were “part of a conspiracy against the patriot movement”. “Our concerns were very much that an individual’s or group’s actions would lead to significant harm,” Mr Guenther said.
Australian Federal Police acting assistant commissioner Jennifer Hurst said police were concerned with targeting criminal activity, not ideologies. “Terrorism has no place in an inclusive Australian society, and we will continue to take action against those who support it in any way, at the earliest point,” she said. The two charges against Mr Galea are collecting or making documents likely to facilitate terrorist acts, and acting in preparation for or planning terrorist acts. Mr Galea was due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday (Tuesday).

The Western Bulldogs are resisting calls by Maribyrnong residents to take steps to ensure their suburb isn’t flooded with pokies. The AFL club is seeking to offload 70 poker machine licences acquired for the failed $30 million Club Edgewater venture. Already strained relations between the Bulldogs and developer Prizac turned sour last year after Prizac altered its plans for the Edgewater project to include a dozen residential apartments on a new top floor for the club’s Edgewater Boulevard building, which would have created Australia’s first mixed-use residential gambling venue. Sharon Schwab, of Residents Against Inappropriate Development In Maribyrnong (RAIDIM), said Edgewater residents had spent seven years fighting to stop a gambling venue from being built in the heart of their neighbourhood. “Seven years on the Western Bulldogs are thriving; they’re a profitable club with over 35,000 members,” Ms Schwab said. RAIDIM wants the Bulldogs to insert a clause into any sale agreement forbidding the machines from being located at 31 Edgewater Boulevard, but the club has declined to make such a commitment. Bulldogs chief operating officer Michael Quinn said the club was considering its options for clawing back the money poured into the Edgewater project. “This includes the potential sale of entitlements to other club operators, including operators in the Maribyrnong [area],” he said. “The club’s … focus is on realising maximum value.”

Hobsons Bay police and the council have developed the first community safety accord aimed at reducing crime in the city. The collaboration comes as new data shows crime increasing by 3.1 per cent in Hobsons Bay for the 12 months to March 31. There were 6991 detected offences in Hobsons Bay, up from 6782 the previous year, according to the Crime Statistics Agency. Brooklyn, which crosses over into Brimbank, recorded 2179 offences, 172 more than the previous year. Williamstown and Williamstown North recorded 1337 offences (up by 119); Altona Meadows and Laverton 2189 (up 98); Newport and Spotswood 1212 (up 66); Altona, with 864 offences, had the smallest increase (12). Mayor Peter Hemphill said theft from vehicles was one crime residents could immediately help prevent. “Vehicle break-ins are a significant problem in Hobsons Bay and local residents need to be more vigilant to reduce crime in this area,” he said. Police Inspector Michelle Young said it might seem obvious, but one of the easiest things people could do was lock their vehicles. “Lock your car, hide your valuables and try to park in well-lit areas where you can,” she said. Inspector Young urged residents to report anything suspicious to triple-0 or Crime Stoppers. “Every little bit of information involving vehicle registrations or descriptions helps us help you.” Altona North mother Helen Bertocci is also involved in the accord, saying she wants to make the community safer for her girls Ashlee, 15, and Brylee, 2. Her husband, Roger Bertocci, was fatally stabbed after going to the aid of a pregnant woman being assaulted just metres from their home on December 14, 2014. “I go back to how Roger and I brought up Ashlee in her neighbourhood, allowing her to venture out – for the neighbourhood to know her as much as

Kinder surprise angers parents By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council has defended its method of allocating kindergarten places despite criticism from parents who have missed out on their preferred options. Maidstone mother Dianne MacDonald said she was disappointed her son missed out on a four-year-old kindergarten offer at Dobson Kindergarten despite spending a lengthy period on the waiting list and attending its three-year-old kinder program. Ms MacDonald said parents were upset to find places were being offered ‘at random’.
“It’s all really mismanaged and there are a lot of angry parents at the moment,” she said. “Children who attended three-year-old kinder don’t get priority. Rather than giving people priority based on how long they have been on the waiting list, they are putting people in at random.” Ms MacDonald, a kindergarten teacher, said places had gone to people who had applied much later than her family. “Before, when you put your name down you got priority,” she said. Maribyrnong community services director Clem Gillings said the current
computer-generated offers process, which came into place in 2013 following a review, was determined by the state government’s “local area priority of access criteria”. She said the practice of not giving any weight to the application date was in keeping with the criteria as well as Municipal Association of Victoria and Department of Education and Training kindergarten guidelines. “This approach ensures equal access to kindergarten services for all children, and to ensure children are not being disadvantaged based on their birth date or due to moving into the area the year before,” she said.
Ms Gillings said the process took into account nominated preferences, but no priority was given to children in optional three-year-old kindergarten programs as they generally had higher fees than the subsidised four-year-old kindergarten program. Second-round offers are scheduled for later this month. Ms Gillings said that although the council had “an excellent track record” in placing most children in kindergarten, high demand meant it was not always possible for families to be offered places in first and second-round offers.
Care to dance? The tradition of old-time dancing is keeping the jive alive in Hobsons Bay. Altona Sports Club’s John Dawson said Saturday night dances started at the venue 30 years ago and had been held continually ever since. As many as 80 people come along each Saturday to listen and dance to live music from bands such as The Mustangs, The Swingmasters and The Hat Band. “They dance on a purpose-built floating dance floor in main hall, a dance venue unique in Hobsons Bay and beyond,” Mr Dawson said. “Dance styles range from modern waltz, ballroom and new vogue, with dance names befitting the era, like alpha waltz, white city waltz, Monte Carlo, Lucille, Killarney, dynasty blues and Sally Anne cha cha.” Saturday night dances are hosted by the club’s dancing section and run from 8pm-11pm.
Due to popularity, dances on Sunday night and throughout the week have been added, covering different styles including ballroom, tango and salsa. Mr Dawson said a special dance was organised for August 27, covering ballroom to rock ‘n’ roll. The Mustangs will provide the live music. “Everyone is welcome, so dress up in your rock ‘n’ roll outfits, put on your blue suede shoes and come along before Elvis leaves the building.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Pipeline leak appeal denied

Winky Pop and OR Australia have lost their appeal for $170 million compensation due to their land in Williamstown North being contaminated by a 2006 pipeline leak from the Mobil refinery. The Court of Appeal ruled they were not entitled to damages for a claimed loss of opportunity to residentially develop the land. The court found that there was no practical prospect of the industrial-zoned land being rezoned. Mobil is continuing to remediate the land under a plan monitored by the EPA.

The father of an Altona Meadows teenager who died after jumping from the West Gate Bridge in 2009 is suing VicRoads for his loss and psychiatric injury. Ali Halkic has filed a writ in the County Court claiming damages, costs and interest in relation to the death of his son, Allem, aged 17. In 2012, coroner Audrey Jamieson found Allem’s death could not have been prevented. She said the annual average number of suicides from the bridge decreased from 10.5 to 1.6 after temporary safety barriers began
waking up and you’re just thinking about his suffering and him being alone and in a dark place, and all those things that are associated with the night,” Mr Halkic told Star Weekly on Monday. “I read his coroner’s report … he was in and out of consciousness and he died of a heart attack in the end. In April 2010, Bacchus Marsh man Shane Phillip Gerada, then 21, was convicted of stalking Allem before his death. The cross-cultural design of a Yarraville home renovation has won two industry awards, placing it among the state’s best. The ‘Agnes 4’ renovation collected Dig Design prizes for both ‘residential – alterations and additions ($200,000–500,000)’ and ‘excellence in use of timber’ at last weekend’s 21st Building Designers Association of Victoria (BDAV) awards presentations. Judges of the first award noted that the renovation played on both the form of a traditional inner-west weatherboard cottage and a Japanese courtyard house. “Starting with a dilapidated, dark and spatially deprived cottage on a tight block, this design response excels by providing well-proportioned light-filled spaces with an apparent ease of connectedness with the outdoor environment,” the judges noted. Jobs brewed for youth Plans are brewing for a new cafe to help vulnerable western suburbs youth break the poverty cycle. Footscray-based Tomorrow Foundation hopes to open The Common Social cafe early next year as a way to help young people find work. The foundation’s founder and chief executive, Alice Wojcik, plans to give more than 50 refugees, asylum seekers and young migrants hospitality training and employment each year. She also plans to open up industry networking and mentoring opportunities. Ms Wojcik says the not-for-profit organisation wants to tackle the employment barriers faced by young people. “We wanted to have a practical answer for some of the issues we see for these people.”

DNA hope in Newport rape cases By Emily Woods/The Age Police have offered a $500,000 reward to find a man who raped an elderly Newport woman twice in two years in the 1980s. Changes to DNA testing have allowed police to rule out three suspects in the sex attack cold cases, with detectives warning it was “only a matter of time” before the offender was caught. Eighty-two-year-old Jessie Grace Lauder was getting ready for bed about 10pm on September 22, 1981, when she heard a loud bang from the back of her Mason Street house. She was confronted by a knife-wielding man wearing gloves, a red and blue beanie and a
mask. He demanded $10 from the terrified grandmother before taking her into the dining room where she was sexually assaulted. Sexual Crimes Squad Detective Nigel Freebairn said the same man returned two years later, on July 6, 1983. Ms Lauder, who lived alone after the death of her husband in 1977, had been getting ready for bed when the man again forced entry into her home. Detective Freebairn said the man referenced his first offence and warned Ms Lauder not to call police. There was no weapon used in the second attack, but Detective Freebairn said the offender placed a newspaper over Ms Lauder’s head as he left.
Ms Lauder died in 1993. Detective Freebairn said on Sunday that changes to DNA testing had allowed police to come closer to solving the cold cases. “The community would be appalled at what happened to Jessie,” he said. The man was aged between 20 and 30 years old at the time of his crimes, but would be between 55 and 65 today. Police believe the offender will be known to people who lived in the area at the time and may have limited social skills. He’s described as 175 centimetres tall, with a fair complexion and dark hair. YMCA runs in Dads’ Day A Yarraville family will hit The Tan next month when they take on the inaugural YMCA Father’s Day Fun Run. The fundraiser for the YMCA’s work in youth mental health involves a family-friendly five or 10 kilometre run or walk around Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens and St Kilda Road, finishing with a Family Fun Day in the Alexandra Gardens. Bernadette Healey said her family had been involved with other YMCA events and always found them to have a fun community atmosphere. “I think the Y is a great organisation,” she said. “We like that they work to get people of all different backgrounds involved in sport.” The Healey family find running is a great way to keep fit and keep stress at bay, while tackling personal challenges and goals.
They have used the September 4 event for motivation to get out and active over winter. Ms Healey said running keeps her football-mad sons in shape ready for game-day. Her youngest son Xavier, 9, has set the event as a target for running an unbroken 5km. YMCA chief executive Peter Burns said the YMCA actually founded Father’s Day in the USA in 1910. “So who better to hold this family friendly event here in Melbourne?” he said. Better buys with fewer bedrooms By Goya Dmytryshchak Home buyers able to consider a two-bedroom house can still find Williamstown affordable, new figures from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) suggest. Data for the June quarter showed the median price for Williamstown houses, generally, was $1.155 million. But wanting a larger database because of the dearth of two-bedroom houses for sale, the REIV collated figures for the year to June. These
show the median price for a two-bedroom house was $815,000 – a $340,000 difference. REIV chief executive Geoff White said a two-bedroom home could be the ideal entry point into one of Melbourne’s most exclusive suburbs. “These are leafy suburbs where buyers can live alongside their million-dollar neighbours on a boutique budget,” he said. “Two-bedroom homes in the inner west are typically located on a reasonably-sized block … and offer good value, especially in comparison

to Williamstown’s median house price of $1.15 million. “Two-bedroom homes in Williamstown have one of the more affordable medians when compared to other million dollar suburbs.” Mr White said two bedroom houses also
delivered capital growth in many areas of greater Melbourne. “Two-bedroom homes are experiencing solid price growth in many of these suburbs, offering value and a yard at a price point significantly below the suburb’s median.” A freestanding renovated period house at 1 Laverton Street is being advertised for $870,000-plus, going to auction on September 17. A freestanding Victorian house at 24 John Street recently sold for $920,000.
Girls needed to pitch in Williamstown Congs Cricket Club is seeking girls for its under-13 side. Member Jenny Bates believes there’s a need for more sports clubs at which girls and women can experience team sport. “I honestly believe there’s some girls out there that would like to play but they’re not all that keen on playing in a mixed team,” she said. “We want to give them every opportunity we can because team sports are just so important for kids. “There are just so many advantages of being part of a team and feeling that inclusion. “Being a girl from the western suburbs, I could have easily gone down the wrong track without having joined a cricket club. “I made lifelong friends and met my future sister-in-law.” Ms Bates said she was also keen to hear from women interested in playing cricket. “Cricket changed my life for the better in my younger days, and has again changed
my life for the better in my 50s,” she said. “A couple of years ago, my life was hitting a brick wall – everything completely changed – and I rediscovered cricket. It pretty much saved me again. “Hence my driving force to start under-age and women’s teams at Williamstown Congs.” The club caters for all ages and abilities, playing in both 40-over one-day and Twenty20 matches. Signs of the times only “This will give them real time to give priority to pursuing some alternative valid form of signage on the front of their shop, including, if necessary, seeking a fresh planning permit from council,” he stated in his ruling. “I would hope, with a spirit of co-operation between the parties, that this matter will not need to return to the tribunal.” Signs in heritage areas should respect the period and style of the building, according to the Hobsons Bay advertising signs guidelines. The council guidelines also encourage materials, fonts and paint colours from the period. Signs that dominate a building or obscure architectural features are discouraged.
A Newport pet shop has been given four months to remove a large purple advertising sign from its frontage on Melbourne Road. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) sided with Hobsons Bay council, which took action to have the sign removed. The tribunal heard the 15 square-metre sign was erected in 2013 without a permit. The pet store is in a small shopping strip, which has a number of period shops dating from 1880 to 1940. Any business or promotional sign of more than eight square metres needs a council permit, as does any new sign on a shop that is covered by a heritage overlay. VCAT senior member Philip Martin gave the shopkeepers four months to remove the sign.

What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I’ve lived here for about 12 years and been involved with the community a lot through my cricket. I help run the Milo cricket program in Hobsons Bay and have recently joined Leaders of Today, a council initiative tasked with empowering young people here. What do you like about Seaholme? Being so close to the beach is great and just its relaxed, picturesque atmosphere. What would you change? I think I’d change the railway line so that I’m not stuck 20 minutes waiting at Newport station for a connecting train.
My favourite cafe would have to be the Hangar in Pier Street. I frequent this cafe after every Milo cricket session I run and have fallen in love with their burgers. What are you passionate about and why? I’m super-passionate about issues of social justice. Having been selected as a World Vision youth ambassador this year, I’ve been enabled to advocate for an end to global hunger and malnutrition. For the 40 Hour Famine this year I’ll be giving up food. I’m doing this because I believe it’s unfair that we live in a world in which 790 million

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir hems and haws over a Flemington eatery Hem is Vietnamese for alley. The new Vietnamese restaurant at the showground shopping centre is in shop 27, hence Hem 27. But that simple explanation tells only part of the story. There has been a lot of thought and time put into the renovation of this space to provide a zippy, cheap eatery with some of the ambience of a Saigon alleyway. Like just about all the westies we know, we eat a lot of Vietnamese food. So when a new place opens – Hem 27 has been doing business for about a month – the scanning of the menu for new, different and interesting dishes is of the reflex variety. At Hem 27, we strike it deliciously rich. Sure, the longish menu has such stalwart Vietnamese regulars as pho and rice paper rolls. But there’s so much more! Chicken spare ribs (suon ga chien; six for $6.80) are every bit as good as we expect. Excellent, in fact – crisp, superbly fried with no residue oil, and tasty. Nui xo bao bit ten trung ($15.80) is a version of diced beef, but with pan-fried macaroni instead of tomato rice. The pasta is a rolled-gold kick. Perhaps cooked with the same tomatoey sauce as the rice in the more familiar version, it comes with a hefty quotient of wok hei. Oh, splendid yumminess – I could eat this pasta all by itself. For breakfast. The gooey fried egg fits right in and the beef is so good, in tenderness and flavour.
HEM 27 Address: Shop 27, 320-380 Epsom Road, Flemington Phone: 9376 2961 Bun ra gi ca ($11.80) is coconut curry chicken noodle soup. It’s a bit more spicy and richer in colour and flavour than most Vietnamese chicken curries I’ve tried. The chicken bits are OK but play second fiddle to the wonderful chunks of sweet potato so well cooked they are on the verge of becoming part of the sauce. Ca kho to ($18) is Vietnamese caramelised braised fish in a clay pot, and it’s a killer. When this dish arrives at our table, I find the rising aromas a little confronting, but the eating and tasting dispels all doubt – this is a lusty, rich stunner. The fish – basa (a sort-of Vietnamese catfish also know as swai) – is extremely well cooked and falling apart at the first touch of eating implements, but it’s all good and the dish’s consumption elicits much ooh-ing and aah-ing. Not everything tried at Hem 27 was found to be totally persuasive, but we dig the whole place. The service was fine – thanks, Mindy! And there’s a whole lot more on that menu to try. Even though everything is on the web these days, I still refer to my Women’s Weekly cookbook I was given when I first moved out of home. FB: What is your signature dish? TJ: I pride myself on a pretty good Weber. Although my last attempt at a roast pork was a disaster. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? TJ: I’m deadly serious when I say this: Sausages, mashed potato, peas and carrots, with a huge slab of garlic bread. FB: What is your favourite food TV show and who is your favourite TV food person?

TJ: My favourite TV food person? I don’t really have one. My wife is the best cook I know. In the 23 years we’ve been married, not once has she failed to cook up an absolute treat. We’ve had this unwritten rule from the moment we started living together that she doesn’t tell me what we’re having for dinner … it’s always a complete surprise.
I was enjoying lunch recently with some old friends when one of them turned to me and said: “You once published a soup recipe in your Food Bytes column which I love. I use it all the time!” It was a simple Thai pumpkin soup recipe, made with a can of coconut cream. She loved it because – apart from being delicious and filling – it was so easy to make. I was stoked! Given that the weather’s been freezing, I thought another simple, warming soup recipe was in order. This one is just as easy, just as filling and uses cans of stuff you’ve probably already got in your pantry. As a bonus, it just happens to be low in fat. Thanks to Delicious for this recipe.
TOMATO AND CHICKPEA SOUP
Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large pan over a low heat. Cook 1 chopped onion, stirring, until soft. Add 1 crushed garlic clove, 2 teaspoons ground cumin and 1 tablespoon of chopped thyme leaves, and stir for a minute. Stir in a 400g can of chopped tomatoes and 1 cup of water. Season to taste. Bring to the boil then reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Cool a little. Pour half the soup into a processor and blitz a few times (leave it a bit chunky). Return blended soup to pan with a 400g can of chickpeas and simmer until heated through. Serve with chopped fresh herbs and plenty of crusty bread.
FB: What is your favourite food? TJ: You can’t go past a good snag or hot dog. My biggest downfall is ice-cream. Ice-cream with lashings of chocolate topping. And sometimes a crushed biscuit on top. FB: What is your favourite drink? TJ: I usually only drink soda water at home. I buy about 20 bottles each Saturday morning. We all tend to drink it. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? TJ: The Queen, John Lennon, Elvis, Captain Cook and my grandfather. He died well before I was born, but it would be nice to meet him just once.

Final day thrills in WRFL By Lance Jenkinson The stage is set for a thrilling climax to the Western Region Football League division 1 season. Altona, Spotswood and St Albans go into the final round with hopes of snaring one of the last two live spots in the finals. Altona is in the box seat, occupying fourth spot and with the easiest fixture – taking on Albion at home. But it will be a tricky encounter for the Vikings against an Albion side with nothing to lose. Of the three teams jostling for fourth and fifth, the Vikings are the only side that will go into their game as the favourites. Should Altona make the most its favouritism, it would leave Spotswood and St Albans battling it out for fifth. The Woodsmen hold fifth spot as it stands and have the slightly easier last round match-up, playing Werribee Districts at home, but they will still go into that game as underdogs. St Albans is also at home but has to square off with three-time defending champion and confirmed minor premier Deer Park – a task no team would voluntarily enter with finals hopes on the line. The equation is simple for the Saints – win and they’re a good chance of getting into the finals, lose and it’s curtains for season 2016. The phone lines will undoubtedly be ringing hot between Altona, Spotswood and St Albans when 5pm nears on Saturday. In division 2, the top four is set, but the minor premiership is still to be determined between North Footscray and Yarraville-Seddon Eagles. You would bet your bottom dollar on the Devils clinching first place in the finals, as they currently hold top spot and have a date with confirmed wooden-spooner West Footscray to come in the last round. Yarraville-Seddon will have to jostle it out on the road against third-placed Caroline Springs in a finals-like fixture. In division 3, the top four is also set, but ladder leader Parkside can be overtaken for the minor premiership by new side Newport Power, which is one win in arrears but has a better percentage. Parkside is unbackable favourite to clinch top spot with a game against lowly North Sunshine in the last round, while the Power has a difficult away trip against the Wyndham Suns.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ While the stakes are high in top-level sport these days, it’s good to know there’s still great Aussie humour around. The Western Bulldogs have become renowned for the weekly banner banter, written by funny man Danny McGinley. He delivered another gem ahead of the match against North Melbourne and Brent Harvey: ‘Fact: No Player has ever won their 428th game’. Danny is gaining a reputation for the banners and it’s refreshing to see a bit of levity, as banter between fans has gone from good-natured to spiteful at times in recent years and that’s a pity. I hope we never lose that ability to have a crack at each other then laugh about it later. ■ A couple of old Bulldogs players also gave me reason to laugh this week at a couple of functions I hosted. Paul Dimattina and Matthew Croft were part of the Legends and Young Guns night for the East West coterie group. ‘Dima’ remembered a game when the Dogs were playing the Saints and ‘Crofty’ was marking Tony Lockett. Dima was giving the Saints full forward the benefit of his wisdom on how the champion could improve his game and Lockett’s demeanour was becoming more menacing with every offering. At the next break, Crofty told his teammate that if he didn’t shut up he wouldn’t have to worry about whether Lockett would hit him – he’d do it himself! ■ Former Hoppers Crossing junior Nigel Kellett, a 100-game player for the Bulldogs, was telling the crowd in the Victory Room at Etihad how proud he was that his sons, Josh and Ben, were part of the Bulldogs father-son academy. At the sons’ jumper presentation, both boys were given number 4 and both were thrilled. Nigel thought it was a special family moment until the boys told him they were rapt to be wearing Marcus Bontempelli’s number. Nigel played 95 of his 101 games in number 4 after wearing 48 for six games. ■ I smiled, as did every Bulldogs fan, when I saw Dale Morris had signed a one-year extension for the 2017 season. Dale is testament to hard work, perseverance and a great attitude and he can look back on his career with unbelievable pride and satisfaction. He has faced every challenge – from not being drafted to a career-threatening leg injury – with a smile and the determination of a champion.

A late City West Falcons’ comeback fell short against Melbourne University Lightning in the Victorian Netball League semi-finals. Just one goal separated the two teams when they met in the second last round of the season, and with a grand final spot on the line, this time was just as fierce. Lightning held their nerve, and the lead, to win 42-41. The fact the Falcons came so close was a miracle in itself. They struggled for the first two and half quarters, particularly in the attacking end, and trailed by as many as nine goals in the third quarter. The margin got to within one goal twice in the last quarter, but turnovers proved costly and they couldn’t get any closer. Falcons’ coach Marg Lind said the match was definitely not one of their best. “I thought we played quite poorly in the first half, so we probably did well to get ourselves

Newport Rams’ young gun Atticus Hurford has been chosen to represent Australia at the 2016 World Children’s Baseball Fair (WCBF) in Japan. The outgoing grade five pupil from Williamstown Primary School is one of five Aussies, and the only Victorian, to attend the week-long event in the city of Toyama. “To go and do a clinic overseas is pretty cool,” Hurford said. “It’s a good opportunity for me to be able to do something else other than classic club baseball.” Talented baseballers from Little League baseball programs in 16 countries have been invited to attend the WCBF. While honing baseball skills will be at the forefront of the fair, there will also be a
cultural awareness strand and an emphasis on participation, team work and friendship. Hurford, an outfielder and short stop with the Rams in the Victorian Little League majors, is looking forward to meeting like-minded youngsters from across the globe. “I want to improve my skills and overall game when I’m there,” he said. “I also want to try and make some friends from other countries over there to keep in touch.” Hurford, a Melbourne Aces and New York Yankees fan, wants a career in baseball. The fair is one of many steps for the Little Leaguer to take to achieve his dream. “Like everyone, I want to get into the big leagues,” he said. “Even getting into the Australian league would be an amazing feat.
“I enjoy watching the Melbourne Aces games and I like all of the players.” Hurford first discovered his love of baseball through a Newport Rams’ come-and-try day. The Rams will be holding their 2016 come-and-try days, open to boys and girls aged between four and 17, on August 28 and on September 11 (both days from 9.30am) at Newport Baseball Club in Park Cresent, Williamstown North. “I was only seven and did a year of tee ball, then I went into the proper baseball and did the Little League minors,” Hurford said. “Then I progressed into the Little League majors and we won the grand final.” Lance Jenkinson

One for the highlight reel By Lance Jenkinson Altona Lacrosse Club rising star Lachlan McDonald has lived his boyhood dream. The 17-year-old “middie defence” was part of the Australian team that competed at the under-19 World Lacrosse Championships in Canada. McDonald felt an immense amount of pride in pulling on the national team jersey in Coquitlam, British Columbia. “It’s been my dream ever since I was a kid,” he told Star Weekly. “You always watch the Aussies in all sports and you wish you can chuck on an Aussie jersey. “It was an unreal experience.” McDonald featured in all seven games for Australia. The team had a mixed tournament, eventually losing to Iroquois Nationals in the third place play-off. The Aussies won two games and lost five – and the experience for McDonald and his teammates was priceless.
“You can’t say too many times that you’ve travelled the world playing sport,” he said. “As a team, we’ve been training together for two years. It started off with a squad of about 150 … as the games got closer, they kept cutting it down to eventually 27 players. “We did create a big bond with each other for the future.” McDonald will never forget the second game of the tournament when Australia beat England 13-10 in a classic. The English have been a traditional sports foe of the Aussies for years and that is no different in lacrosse. “It was unreal to win against the rivals,” McDonald said. “It was a very physical game … it was good to get away with that one.” The Australian team was made up largely of Victorian players. The western suburbs had strong representation with Williamstown’s Alex Mercier, Sean Clarke and Griffin Nicholas and Footscray’s Matthew Davies, Matthew Singleton and Lachlan Russell also making the

team. McDonald was in a unique position in that he made the squad from second-tier team Altona. The Emmanuel College year 12 student was proud to represent Altona on such a big stage. “I’ve got a lot of family history at that club and my dad [Bernard] is now the president,” McDonald said. “There’s some people I played with when I first started playing lacrosse and now I’m playing with them in seniors.” McDonald wants to study engineering at university, but is also keen to pursue a career in lacrosse. He is hopeful that his destination will be a college in the US. “I’d love to go off and study and play lacrosse in America,” he said. “I’ve been working on trying to get a scholarship through talking to some coaches. “Nowadays you have to make your own highlight reel and send it off to the coaches, so that’s what I’ve done.”
Footscray upset local rivals Williamstown by four points in a VFL thriller at Burbank Oval on Sunday. The Bulldogs led for most of the final quarter, only to see their advantage disappear with late goals to Jack Dorgan and Ben Jolley. Dorgan’s goal for the Seagulls was one of the highlights of the match, hemmed up on the boundary, he could barely see daylight between the big sticks and managed to pierce them. There was enough time on the clock for Footscray to wrestle back the lead one final time though. In the decisive play, the Bulldogs almost made a meal of their advantage, before Andrew Tashevski-Beckwith ended the chain with a sweetly-timed goal on the run from 50 metres out. Mitch Hannan was superb for the Bulldogs with four goals, while Jordan Russell was commanding in defence with 27 possessions, nine marks and three tackles. Liam Nash and Jed Adcock were ferocious with seven tackles apiece. For Williamstown, Willie Wheeler continued his sparkling form, racking up 27 possessions, while Caleb Hislop worked hard both ways with 23 disposals and eight tackles. Leigh Masters, Michael Gibbons and Dylan Conway kicked two goals apiece for the Seagulls. It was a crucial victory for Footscray – the sixth time in eight games it has won by two goals or less – securing a finals spot for a third year running. Williamstown slid down the ladder to second spot. The Seagulls will be looking to get back into the winners’ circle when they visit Essendon for Wheeler’s 100th VFL game at Windy Hill on Sunday. Footscray has the bye. Meanwhile, the season is over for Footscray defender Kieran Collins, who will undergo surgery on a shoulder injury.
