way for the latest application. However, the proposal now before the council faces planning restrictions on the site aimed at protecting the parkland and Maribyrnong River. The design overlay seeks to “protect areas along the Maribyrnong River from visual intrusion caused by the inappropriate siting or appearance of buildings and works”. Development must uphold “the character and appearance of the area” and “enhance the skyline when viewed from the river and its banks”. A design appraisal submitted with the application notes that a seven-storey building with 120 units already approved on the south side of Ballarat Road “will change the future character of the precinct”. It suggests the new proposal is an opportunity to “balance” the project and reinforce a “gateway” into Footscray. Former Footscray mayor Bill Horrocks said the hotel site’s redevelopment had been controversial, and the new plan would also face a backlash. Felsink did not respond by deadline.

A seven-storey apartment block may go up on the edge of Footscray Park after Maribyrnong council unsuccessfully fought to claim the land as its own. Toorak-based developer Felsink last month lodged an application for a 36-unit project on a carpark at 2B Ballarat Road, 25 years after it redeveloped the adjacent 1845-built Pioneer Hotel. In the 1990s, Felsink director John Osbourne was granted approval to build 36 apartments on the hotel site so long as a “multi-purpose public facility” was built on adjoining Crown land within 10 years. Failing that, the developer was required to forfeit the carpark land to the council. Felsink eventually submitted several proposals, including a conference centre and a Stokehouse-style restaurant, but all either lapsed or were rejected. After the 10 years had passed, the council lay claim to the carpark site, which had already mistakenly been transferred to its ownership. But in 2010, Supreme Court Justice David Habersberger found the council had erred in rejecting Felsink’s final proposal, which effectively repudiated the agreement. In 2013, despite 50 objections from neighbours, Felsink successfully applied for removal of a covenant that had restricted use of the site to carparking. Zoning was also changed from public space to residential, paving the

Carnival’s over: board stands firm By Benjamin Millar The Big West Festival board has fended off a community backlash over its decision to wind up the festival by arguing it has done the right thing in a “significantly constrained” funding environment. Star Weekly last week reported the fivemember board’s surprise decision to “retire” the festival by the end of this year. An emergency “Save Big West” meeting in Footscray last Wednesday night floated the idea of the board stepping down as one way to save the festival. The board had initially accepted an invitation to attend the meeting

to explain its decision, but it pulled out when it wasn’t convinced the agenda would allow a “productive session”. Maribyrnong councillor Grant Miles said Big West had been funded by the council for 20 years and it was likely to have received a guarantee of further funding. “I think these people are custodians of the festival – they’re not the owners – and I wonder whether they really do have the right to just close the festival without consultation,” he said. Footscray artist and Save Big West spokesman Hoang Tran Nguyen told last week’s meeting that the board’s assertion the

festival’s closure made space for other western suburbs organisations was unsubstantiated. “We fear that just the opposite will occur – that artistic activity and vibrancy in the area will simply retract as a result of this decision,” he said. Mr Nguyen said the board had terminated the organisation without adequate community and stakeholder consultation. In a statement to Star Weekly, the board said its decision was taken in line with its responsibilities and followed more than two years of considering and trialling “numerous strategies” to address the organisation’s sustainability.

“Unfortunately, the challenges faced by the organisation cannot be mitigated by the energy and brilliance of the artists and communities who support the work of Big West,” the board’s statement said. The board went public with its decision on July 6 after informing Creative Victoria and Maribyrnong council on June 23 and at the same time withdrawing funding applications lodged with those bodies. The board said it withdrew the applications before being aware of their outcomes. Members of the Save Big West group are scheduled to meet the festival’s board this week.

Ice use records keep tumbling Ice use, unheard of 10 years ago, has rocketed in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong, with almost 200 offenders detected in 2016. Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) reports that, statewide, methamphetamine offences have more than doubled, on average, each year over the past 11 years, while amphetamine and heroin offences have stayed about the same level. Ice made up 0.1 per cent of all drug offences in 2006 but surged to make up 27 per cent this year. Between 2006 and 2016, ice offences jumped from zero to 62 in Hobsons Bay and to 129 in Maribyrnong. In the same period, amphetamine (speed) detections in Hobsons Bay dropped from 38 to six. In Maribyrnong, they fell from a peak of 62 in 2012 to 16 in 2016. Heroin offence detections in Maribyrnong also peaked in 2012 at 144, dropping to 61 in 2016. In Hobsons Bay, they rose slightly, from 10 in 2006 to 13 this year. Hobsons Bay police’s Inspector Michelle Young said drops in certain drugs and expansion of some drugs may indicate the changing drug market. “Drug statistics are usually detected offences so therefore any rise indicates that police are addressing this issue.” The CSA research found heroin and methamphetamine offenders were likely to be over 25 when first detected. Twin sisters, 90, still share the love Twin sisters Emma Traill and Ann Smith have celebrated their 90th birthday by sharing fond memories of growing up in Footscray. Emma Amy Elizabeth Traill was born 45 minutes ahead of her twin sister, Ann Jane Mabel Smith, on July 9, 1926. They moved with their family to Footscray at a very early age, attending Hyde Street Primary School (now Footscray City Primary School). As a young woman, Emma met the late Reverend Ron Traill, a Footscray resident, and married him in 1953. They had three children: Jen, Ro and Geoff. Ann married Bill Smith, a West Footscray lad, and these days they both reside happily at West Haven on Pickett Street. Friends and family came together last Saturday to celebrate the shared birthday in Ballarat, where Emma now lives. They then travelled to Footscray to share the day with both sisters on Sunday. The keen Western Bulldog-supporting twins were delighted to receive a personalised video message from star forward Jake Stringer wishing them a happy birthday. Park plan warms up for lift-off By Benjamin Millar Hopes are soaring for a new aeroplane-themed playground to put Braybrook on the map. A draft design has been revealed for the Lance Reichstein Playground at Skinner Reserve after the playground was destroyed in an arson attack late last year. The design retains the ‘flight’ theme of the playground but updates it to reflect requests for a variety of play challenges for all ages. Maribyrnong council has set aside $803,000 to redevelop the playground and is seeking

philanthropic support for extra improvements. Community consultation during April attracted feedback from almost 200 people. The feedback included requests to make the space unique and create a point of difference for Braybrook – a safe site with clear sight lines, providing plenty of gathering places and using robust materials. The draft concept includes a central aeroplane feature, with wings that contain rows of swings and a steel-ribbed fuselage with climbing nets.

The plane is even set on a ‘runway’ and distinct junior and senior play spaces have been added, with features including a flying fox. Barbecue and picnic areas are also planned, along with tree plantings for shade and open lawn areas. The draft concept plan is due to go to consultation, with a further report due back to council, along with a final playground plan, in September. Construction is expected to begin in March and be completed by June next year.

A Footscray actor has been channelling his inner chimpanzee in readiness for his latest production. Rory Kelly is taking the title role in Red Stitch’s Australian premiere of Trevor Trevor, a play exploring the twilight years of a former showbiz chimpanzee, who lives with his widowed keeper far from the Hollywood glitz and glamour he once knew. Kelly was immediately drawn to Nick Jones’ story and says he has never worked on a show like it. “I’m an actor trying to be a chimp, who is trying to be a man. As a performer it would be hard not to be attracted to this show,” he said. “The language is amazing … on so many planes. It has the comedy element, the drama element, then halfway through, a cabaret element. All the while there is this underlying grand human story.” Kelly says the fact Trevor can talk, but

Council seeks curbs on pokies

By Goya Dmytryshchak It’s still under construction but the Australian Islamic Centre in Newport will be available to the public for this month’s Open House Melbourne Weekend. Designed by world-renowned Sydney architect Glenn Murcutt in collaboration with local architect Hakan Elevli, the prayer centre has attracted world acclaim and is destined for heritage listing. It will have about 1200 square metres of prayer areas for both males and females, a library, classrooms, recreational and function centres, an Imam’s residence, two guest houses and other spaces. It’s the subject of two upcoming documentaries and an exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Part of the reason for international interest is the involvement of Mr Murcutt, the only Australian to have won the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the ‘Nobel Prize” for architecture. Mr Elevli said the building, which had drawn on the best elements from mosques around the world, was unlike any other. “The most significant thing it is being a very Islamic spiritual space that makes it very inclusive of non-Muslims as well,” he said. “The idea was to create an architecturallydesigned building with Islamic features … but also make it contemporary.” Jordan-born Imam Abdullah Al Hawari said the minaret, a thick 16-metre wall as opposed to a traditional round tower, had also been designed for contemporary Australia. “In our country we use the minaret to put a speaker on to call the people to prayer,” he said. “In Australia, it’s not allowed to put the speaker outside so we did it a different way.

Maribyrnong council has adopted a new policy aimed at tackling the harmful effects of gambling. It will oppose any increase in the municipal cap of 511 electronic gaming machines and ban access to online gambling at all council-supported public access internet points. The moves are among 13 commitments outlined in the council’s Reducing Harm From Gambling Policy 2016-2020, which was to be tabled at its meeting last night. The new policy incorporates some of the 68 public responses to a draft policy released in April. The council will also push for fewer gaming machines and oppose any increase or relocation in areas with high social and economic disadvantage, such as Braybrook, which already has 15 machines per 1000 adults – more than double the state’s average of six machines. The policy focuses on electronic gaming machines as the main source of gambling losses. It notes that “problem gambling causes social and economic harms to individuals, families and communities.” The Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission estimates problem gamblers account for about 40 per cent of total pokies losses, with the annual cost of problem gambling in Victoria close to $3 billion. Per capita losses in Maribyrnong are among the highest in Victoria.

Great ride fan fires up Altona’s Brett Marlow is gearing up for his 24th consecutive RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride and camping holiday. Entries are open for the 527-kilometre ride, which will go from the Grampians to the Great Ocean Road from November 26 to December 4. Mr Marlow, 65, rides from Altona to Footscray five days a week and takes out his “good bike” for a serious ride on Sundays. He has been clocking up about 300 kilometres a week in training for the great ride, on which he loves catching up with friends. “It’s just so much fun,” he said. “I’ve done so many of them, I know an awful lot of people on the ride. I just enjoy the cycling – it’s just a whole heap of fun. This particular ride along

the west coast is the best one that they do of all the rides. It’s pretty spectacular. “My advice for riders coming on the ride for the first time is to have your bike set up properly and ensure the gears are all working. “It also helps if you remember where you pitch your tent. One year I’d had a bit too much to drink and needed the security guard to help me find my tent.” About 5000 cyclists from Australia and overseas, aged from under 10 to above 80, are expected to take part in ride options covering three, five and nine days.. Five-storey bid to ease RSL debt By Goya Dmytryshchak Builder Grocon has lodged an application with Hobsons Bay council for a five-storey development on the site of the Williamstown RSL club and an adjoining RSL-owned house. As reported by Star Weekly a year ago, RSL Victoria gave the sub-branch the option to redevelop or close as the latter struggles to repay a $2.8 million debt.

The sub-branch chose to redevelop. Grocon’s plans submitted to the council show 69 dwellings, along with 93 car spaces across two basement levels. Williamstown RSL president Bruce O’Brien said there were also plans for retail on the ground floor. “We have a debt of $2.8 million,” he said. “[If the project goes ahead] we could still have a small debt, but it will be a comfortable debt. It will depend on what the

units sell for as against the cost to build them.” Mr O’Brien said the new Williamstown RSL Club would be modern but reflect members’ military past and Williamstown’s history. “We also want it to reflect that it’s a community club,” he said. “Something like 22 community organisations use our club and we don’t charge them. “Once we get back into the swing of things, we would hope to get back to what we used to do before we started losing money, and that is

[providing] scholarships for the local primary schools. All the junior sports clubs – we used to give them donations, which we haven’t been able to do recently.” The Williamstown sub-branch, which is about 95 years old, has more than 1000 members and directly and indirectly employs about 35 people. During development, Williamstown members will use the Spotswood-Kingsville sub-branch premises.

It’s all go for Pokemon Pokemon GO fans are flocking to Altona beach, with businesses reporting up to 300 extra customers a day. Altona Pines fish and chip shop owner Alex Barakat said his store, near Altona Pier and Logan Reserve, was a major beneficiary with about 150 players converging at Altona Pier on Saturday night. He said players had gone into the shop saying they had found rare Pokemon like Pikachu, Squirtle and Poliwhirl and there were “lures” right outside his shop. Pokemon players’ challenge is to catch small, fictional creatures that can be seen in real-life settings through a smartphone or tablet. A lure can be used to bring Pokemon to the players’ location. Mr Barakat said he had not paid for his business to become such an attraction and was blessing his luck. “I’ve had a few customers coming in telling me, ‘We’ve searched almost half of Melbourne and couldn’t find a specific Pokemon’, and they found it in Altona in front of the pier,” he said. “My fish shop is normally

a lunch-type business, but ever since Pokemon GO started, as soon as it hits 6pm or 6.30pm, they all start rocking in, big groups of them. And they’re all on their phones trying to catch Pokemon while ordering fish and chips.” But not everyone has been so happy, with some people taking to social media to complain about groups of 60-or-so walking blindly across the road at the corner of the Esplanade and Pier Street. One person posted that there appeared to be drug-dealing in the Cherry Lake carpark after seeing numerous vehicles going back and forth and around in circles for an hour. Meanwhile, Pokemon GO hunters have been swarming Footscray Park, particularly those in search of Dratani and Magikarp. Other Pokemon have been found outside Footscray Town Hall, and they have even popped up behind the bar at Littlefoot nightspot. An Indigenous Altona student has become one of three Australians, and the only woman, to be awarded this year’s prestigious Charlie Perkins Trust Scholarship. Olivia Slater, an honours graduate of Victoria University’s Indigenous studies, will leave in September to pursue her Masters degree in social anthropology at Cambridge University. The Yamatji/Nyoongar woman, whose lineage is from south-west and central Western Australia, left school after Grade 9 because of family circumstances. “My parents divorced. My father – who is non-Indigenous – left the family completely, never to return,” Ms Slater said. “Three months later we lost our house in a fire. My mum and I then left Perth and I left formal schooling. “Looking back on it, I was so traumatised that the concept of even attending school, particularly in a new area and starting afresh, was just so far beyond what anybody could manage. “I ended up leaving home at 16.” The 34-year-old mother of two returned to study four years ago. “It took finding my now-husband and having children to set an anchor down in Melbourne and make me think about the ways in which I could nourish myself instead of just working to survive,” Ms Slater said. “That’s where university study came in to it.” She said Melbourne’s western suburbs had been a nurturing place to raise her children. Ms Slater, who works as an Indigenous program producer at Footscray Community Arts Centre, said the Aboriginal community had welcomed her. At Cambridge, she plans to study how Aboriginal Australians are making theatre, TV and movies.

“We’re basing a lot of our stories on real events and real people and there’s a growing trend of Indigenous authors, not writing histories in books, but actually performing historical events,” Ms Slater said. “I’m going to explore that with an anthropological lens, which is quite new, and I’m quite keen to explore that social science.” Goya Dmytryshchak

I have lived off and on in Yarraville for the last 16 years, but have been here permanently for the last six. I had my personal studio at the Yarraville Community Centre for a couple of years, and The Art Room essentially started at Yarraville community centre about eight years ago.

Who or what has been your biggest inspiration? I think essentially I am inspired by other creatives, who are driven to give to the world in a positive, generous and unique way regardless of financial gain. I am very lucky to be surrounded by a lot of such people.

What do you love most about the area? What would you change?

What is your vision for The Art Room’s new home?

I love everything about it! The sense of community and the fact it feels almost like living in a country town, but only 10 minutes from the city. I love the great restaurants and cafes, and best of all The Sun Theatre. I would change the trucks on the roads.

Our vision is to contribute to the inner west’s really exciting renewal and development, and play a part in the wonderful community we live in. The new purpose-built art studio will enable us to create more exciting art experiences, be more inventive in our classes and workshops, and employ more wonderful teachers and life models. We have a vision of opening up our programs to include free art talks and workshops, and panel discussions where you can hear top Melbourne artists discuss their practices and careers. We want to provide life-drawing unlike anything previously offered in Melbourne. It will also open up the opportunity to become a pop-up theatre and performance space and venue for exhibitions.

What are your favourite local cafés or eateries? My absolute favourite café is the Feedback café in Ballarat Street. It is like my home away from home! I also love Bopha Devi and Back Alley Sally’s. What are you most passionate about? I am passionate about art and art education and its power to connect, communicate and engage. I am passionate about creating something, whether it be in my artwork or with my business, that connects with people deeply.

The club’s commitment to its catchment includes working closely with a range of former service people, currently serving personnel, schools, and sport and charity organisations. With a new courtesy bus shuttling patrons to and from surrounding areas, general manager David Hanson says the club has stepped up its services to customers. “Obviously, welfare is our main focus,” David says. “We’ve contributed $1,481,546 to the local community during the past six years alone and now, by offering the courtesy bus, members and guests don’t have to find a carpark.” With a refurbished functions area, Altona RSL has the facilities and space to cater for a wide range of groups – from two to 200 people. All spaces are equipped with multimedia equipment and there’s a separate lounge bar, TAB facilities and a bistro open Tuesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner. “The RSL is close to Altona station so people can get the train to a function, ensuring they arrive and depart safely,” David says. Formed in 1927, the club has become an icon in the community, winning the RSL’s sub-branch of the year award in 2015 in its division. “We’ve got quite a few current serving guys starting to become members now,” David says.

Learning leads to lifelong journeys I

t’s just halfway through the school year, but Braybrook’s Caroline Chisholm Catholic College has already scored major successes in the first semester. Principal Marco DiCesare says this year’s VCE students are well on their way to replicating last year’s achievements. “The success in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) last year included 15 students receiving ATAR scores above 90,” says Mr DiCesare. “And there were four perfect study scores of 50 in chemistry, physics, mathematical methods and IT applications.” Activities outside the classroom in the last semester have encompassed work experience, debating, a girls’ AFL tournament, dance workshops and a high-profile Moomba parade performance. The college also opened several new facilities: a chapel, recreation area and administration spaces. Plans for a new performing arts centre and renovations to the science laboratories are in the pipeline. Mr DiCesare believes all students have talents, and they’re given every chance to excel. “We aim for our students to be the best they are called to be – whether that’s academically with science and maths, artistically with music and drama, hands-on in our trade training centre, or in out-of-classroom fields such as sport and social justice. I’m proud of our community. We’re building a strong reputation based on the excellence our students are achieving across a range of areas.” This reputation is underpinned by

the school’s faith-filled, supportive and inclusive environment, Mr DiCesare says. The college has recently introduced a new house structure designed to build closer relationships between students in different year levels, and between students and teachers. The new “vertical house structure” places students from years 7-9 and years 10-12 in learner mentor groups

with the same teacher for three years. An open day on October 11 will allow families considering a Catholic secondary education to see the college in action. “I look forward to meeting families at open day and giving them a first-hand look at the college. They’ll be able to hear from our students and teachers, and tour the excellent facilities,” Mr DiCesare says.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a little gem by the tracks in Seddon Consider The Sauce has long admired the twin rows of old shops on either side of the tracks near Seddon station, on Bellairs Avenue and Pentland Parade. We’ve often wondered what the street scenes must have been like when those shops were in their heyday. And we’ve sometimes mused on how lovely it would be to see some street life returning to the area. Of course, almost all the properties concerned have been turned over to purely residential uses in the subsequent decades. So who could blame those who live there from being sensitive about and protective of their quiet neighbourhood? Fig & Walnut proprietor Vera told us that as her cafe was coming together, she did indeed have to put some serious and sincere effort into winning over the locals. She did so, and I’m betting they’re all rapt about having this business on their collective doorstep. Because Fig & Walnut is a stunner. The old shop has been done out in bright and open style, with the wooden ceilings and brickwork retained. The eating spaces include the lovely garden out back, which has a cute-as-a-button cubbyhouse, and the front room of the shop next door. The vibe here is bustling and cheerful. And the food, based on our first visit’s meals, is marvellous – and some of the dishes we eyeball that are headed elsewhere look even sexier.

But the results bespeak skill, imagination and inspiration way beyond that. Bennie’s pancakes ($18) are a fantasia of colours and flavours. The gluten-free pancakes themselves are shaped like burger patties or fat cookies – and taste grainy yet also marvellous. They’re attended by maple mascarpone, saffron-poached pear, grilled figs, berries, passionfruit, and more. There are three salads on the menu, any of which can be supplemented by protein portions such as poached coconut chicken, eye fillet or salmon. I feel no need of the supplements when ordering my roasted winter root vegetable salad ($16.90). How good does it look! It tastes even better, the perfectly cooked vegetables doing a sensual tango with turmeric yogurt and rocket pesto, both of which are delivered in perfect quantities to lube things along nicely. I’m a fan of anyone trying to play sport at the highest level they can. We can’t all represent our country at the Olympics, get a baggy green cap or play AFL footy, but we can try to get the best out of ourselves, depending on our circumstances. Work and family can affect this at times, and that’s fair enough. In footy, that may mean not being able to play at VFL level because of the time commitment involved or the nature of your profession. After talking to Werribee 100-gamer Scott Sherlock last week, the reality of this hit home. Scott works in a physically demanding occupation (builder) five days a week. When you add that to the demands on his body from football, he’s doing well to compete week after week. Scott does gets paid to play for Werribee, but it’s a long, long way from the $300,000 average salary of an AFL-listed player even though he plays on AFL players every week. While they might spend Monday morning in recovery, Scott is on the tools making a living. Last week I wrote that future AFL stars need teammates at grassroots level to learn their craft, and when they get into the AFL system they need opponents at VFL level (like Scott Sherlock) or they’d be playing simulation games against witches’ hats. This is another level of football that’s vital to the game, yet it’s under-funded by the very game it helps build. Why?

Altona solidified its place in the WRFL division 1 top five with a hard-fought 29-point win over Spotswood at JK Grant Reserve on Saturday. The Vikings bounced out of the blocks to lead by 20 points at quarter-time and kept the visitors in check for the remainder of the game. It was a tough loss for the Woodsmen, one that sees them dislodged from fifth spot. They do, however, have a game in hand on St Albans, which leap-frogged them into fifth, so their destiny remains in their own hands. Altona moved two games clear inside the five. Josh Rafferty and Kelly Pickard were outstanding for the Vikings, while Jordan Robbins kicked three goals from the midfield. Murray Boyd snared two goals for the Woodsmen, with Matson Lynch and Sam Wood working hard all game. Altona has the toughest assignment in the competition on Saturday, taking on three-peat premier side Deer Park on its home track at

John McLeod Oval. Spotswood faces a tricky away encounter with a Wyndhamvale team that had an upset win against it earlier in the season. In division 3, Newport Power came back from a goal down at three-quarter time to overrun Sanctuary Lakes by 17 points at Featherbrook Reserve. The victory means the Power equalled top side Parkside’s record at 10-2 after the latter had the bye at the weekend. Jehad Haddara capped a best-on-ground display with three goals. Braybrook was left heartbroken after losing a shoot-out against North Sunshine by a point at Dempster Park. Jamie Lane and Nathan Smith booted five goals apiece for the Brookers. football is great and, again, may be the best level some players can achieve. I’ve always advocated that local clubs embrace it and let players take part. This year, the WRFL rep side beat Ballarat in a thrilling encounter at Whitten Oval. It was a great game played in good spirit, good for the larger game, and a worthy showcase. Seven players from that side were chosen to play in the Vic Metro team two weekends ago. That game was played at Mernda on a Sunday and, as we’re only five weeks away from finals, it was a credit to the players that they made themselves available, especially as six of the seven play for teams with finals aspirations. The promotion and coverage of the game was poor; it barely rated a mention anywhere. Selection for Vic Metro is something to aspire to, but I’d be very surprised if players put up their hands for this game next year … and this has nothing to do with the season-ending injury to Josh Bench. Do we have a clear cut favourite in the race for the WRFL division 2 premiership? Yarraville-Seddon might just have snuck in front at the weekend, moving a game clear on top of the ladder and securing the best record in blockbuster matches between the top three sides this season. In contests between sides ranked first to third, the Eagles hold an impressive 3-1 record, while second-placed Caroline Springs (1-3) is on the losing side of the equation and third-placed North Footscray (2-2) is at break even. In such a tight race for the double chance, Eagles coach Dean Callaway isn’t prepared to declare his side – 11-1 on the season – the front-runner just yet. “We still see North Footscray as the side to beat,” he said. What is certain is that Yarraville-Seddon comes to play in the big games. Its percentage of 203.2 is dwarfed by that of Caroline Springs (306.7) and North Footscray (282.6) because it does merely what it has to do to beat the lower-ranked sides – then takes it up a notch when the blockbusters roll around. It bodes well for September’s big games. Yarraville-Seddon learned from its first clash with North Footscray and turned the tables on them with a 38-point win at Hansen Reserve on Saturday. The Eagles’ main focus was to cut off the supply chain to the Devils’ forwards. “We put pressure on them around the stoppages and worked on stopping how easily they brought the ball into their attack last time,” Callaway said. “They beat us at the stoppages in the first game; we beat them there this time.” Yarraville-Seddon’s big men Mason Angove and Jesse Varsamakis, rotating between ruck and half forward, were outstanding. Also in fine form for the Eagles are Macauley Goring and Lachie Longmire through the midfield. Kevin Johnson might be only a teenager, but the half-back took no step backwards when he locked horns with North Footscray’s Tyson Bock. “For an 18 year old, he’s got like a 25-year-old footy head on his shoulders,” Callaway said. “One on one, he does the right things, puts himself into position to receive the footy and isn’t afraid of taking on the big guys.” Yarraville-Seddon will host bottom side West Footscray at the Yarraville Oval on Saturday. West Footscray lost to Albanvale by 81 points at Robert Bruce Oval last start.

Olympics on the radar By Lance Jenkinson There is no off-season for heptathlete Jamieson Battistella. The cold weather has set in and her next competition is not until October, but no green light has been given to slacken off. Battistella has a strict training load to adhere to, including prehab, running sessions, gym and technical tweaks. She often meets with her coach, Darren Clark, and spends time in physio maintaining peak fitness. Battistella is just 15, but knows what she wants, and that is to reach the pinnacle of her sport: the Olympic Games. In August, when she eventually arrives at her Derrimut home after two training sessions and a school day, she will do her homework and then switch on the television to watch the Olympics. Then her mind may wander four, or possibly eight, years down the track to what might be for her own career. Next morning it will be back to reality and Battistella will get back to work on the track, knowing the Olympic dream goes to those with not only the most talent, but the best work ethic. And that’s something she has in abundance. “That’s my ultimate goal, to get to an Olympic Games,” she said. “I really want to get there but I’ve still got a few more steps in between. “You keep long-term goals in mind but you’ve got to get the short-term ones and keep improving to get to the long-term ones. “At the moment, it’s the off-season, but I still have to be really motivated and dedicated to get up every single day and go to training. “It can get hard but it’s something I like about myself that I have the motivation to get up every single day and go for a run or go to training and do whatever I need to do.” Battistella can reflect proudly on her past track and field season. She performed strongly at local, national and international level in the heptathlon – a seven-event competition where points are accumulated in 100 metre hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 metres, long jump, javelin and 800 metres – and pentathlon, a five-event competition where points are compiled in 100 metre hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and 800 metres. Battistella finished fifth at the under-17 Australian Heptathlon Championships, won gold at the Little Athletics Victoria state titles, came fifth in the Little Athletics Australia pentathlon, fifth in the high jump and 12th in the triple jump at the Simplot Games in Idaho, USA. It was taking on athletes two years older at the nationals that saw the rising star turn heads. “I was extremely happy,” Battistella said of the result at the nationals. “I didn’t perform well in one of my best events but did really well in all of the other events.

Anthony Barry notched the decisive score for Footscray – a behind – in Saturday’s thrilling one-point upset win over Casey Scorpions at a windswept Whitten Oval. Hemmed up on the boundary with 33 minutes on the clock, Barry knew he was taking on a tough shot. He deliberately kicked his set shot across the goal face, let the wind take control and watched it curl in for a behind at the near side. Moments later, the siren sounded to seal a dramatic Bulldogs win against the VFL ladder leader. The never-say-die Dogs had come back from 30 points down at three-quarter time to keep their top-four hopes alive. Kicking with the aid of a strong breeze, the Bulldogs registered 4.8 to one behind in the last quarter to claim a deserving victory. The win was inspired by young gun Mitch Honeychurch, who had a major impact across half-back and through the midfield. Talls Jordan Staley and Will Minson kicked two goals apiece. Footscray is one game outside the top four and has a winnable away game against Northern Blues on Sunday. A major beneficiary of Footscray’s win was local rival Williamstown. The Seagulls moved back to the top of the table after a solid 38-point win over Coburg at Burbank Oval. Ayce Cordy was a standout for the Seagulls with three goals, while Ben Jolley and Michael Gibbons were busy in the midfield. The Seagulls face Port Melbourne at North Port Oval on Saturday.

City West Falcons did what they had to do. No more, no less. While a quick glance at the scoreboard for the Victorian Netball League win over Yarra Valley Grammar last week shows a comfortable 62-39 win, Falcons coach Marg Lind said it was much tougher than the score suggested. “It took us a while to get to a comfortable point,” Lind said. “A lot of teams now have nothing to lose as they’re playing out their seasons and are taking it pretty seriously.” The Falcons led from start to finish, with the forward pairing of Kristina Brice and Kathleen Knott causing headaches for the winless Ariels’ defence from the opening whistle. Knott didn’t miss a shot all night, while Brice shot at 87 per cent, bagging 50 goals for the match. The Falcons had the game in hand all night, leading by seven, nine, 15 and 23 at the breaks,

although Lind was just happy to bank the four points given the personnel missing. “We didn’t have any of our regular goalers fit so we had people covering for us,” she said. “We needed that win to put us one step closer to a double chance, which is what we were looking for. That win has put us in the best possible position moving towards finals. “Our whole attacking end was very good, as it has been all year.” With just three games before finals, Falcons can lock up the double chance with just one more win. But they will have to earn it, with matches against fourth-placed Southern Saints and ladder leader Melbourne University in the next fortnight. “It’s a tough run, but it will be a good tune-up for the real stuff,” Lind said. Altona City on song for derby By Lance Jenkinson A good gauge of how much a victory has meant to a side is by listening to how loudly it belts out the club song after the game. Altona City ended its recent barren run against traditional rival Hoppers Crossing in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 on Saturday with a 1-0 win on the road at Grange Reserve that was celebrated with gusto. City president Joe Tanti told Star Weekly it was the most rousing rendition he’d ever heard in his time at the club. “It’s the biggest game every year, every time we play Hoppers,” he said. “The first thing we do when the fixtures come out, we look for them. It’s a game that we want to win.” The rivalry between Altona City and Hoppers Crossing goes way back. But while they go hammer and tong for 90 minutes, once the final whistle is blown, both sets of players and fans come together, shake hands and enjoy each other’s company. “We work together pretty well, both committees,” Tanti said. “At the start of the year, we ring each other up and try to put our requests in early to play each other on dates when it’s good for each club. “They had their past players day and we usually have our sponsors function on. It’s a bit of a help each other sort of thing.” It’s fair to say that Hoppers Crossing has enjoyed the derby more in recent times – until this year. Gray pounced on an errant Hoppers clearance and sent it low and hard past Hoppers goalkeeper Kieron Sharratt. Gray’s impact over the course of the 90 minutes drew praise even from Iosifidis. “I thought he was outstanding,” Iosifidis said. “He was solid defensively and every time he had the ball he was pretty creative, as well. He didn’t lose the ball once.” Tanti also praised his team’s midfield general. “He grabs the bull by the horns and demands a lot of the boys around him,” Tanti said. “The boys are responding.” James Neighbour was resolute in defence. Tasked with the marking job on Hoppers dangerman John Little, Neighbour shut him out of the game. He was also commanding in the air. “I turned to one of the boys and joked that I’d be surprised if he hasn’t got concussion with how much he has headed the ball,” Tanti said. Ayodeji Omoboye was full of energy on the front line for City. “He had them on the back foot and could’ve finished with a bag but just couldn’t get one past the ’keeper,” Tanti said. But the one goal was enough for Altona City to celebrate long and hard into the night. The win gives coach Andy O’Dell and his players a sniff of promotion, but a win over second-placed Essendon Royals is a must at Kim Reserve this Friday night.
