Science through artists’ eyes Engineers, scientists and educators at Victoria University are making a splash in the art world, finding inventive ways to merge art and science. Skunk Control, a group from the College of Engineering and Science, is bringing back childhood’s wonderment at the world around them. Founder Nick Athanasiou says the group has been engaging the community in learning which “rethinks” science and engineering. “Those disciplines are similar to art; they prompt you to ask questions,” he says. Skunk Control is involved in nine upcoming public art projects in Melbourne between now and December. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the project would take about 6000 trucks off inner-west residential streets. “For too long [residents] had to live with the noise and pollution of the trucks moving through local roads.” Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the design was a result of extensive community consultation. “This is very much about moving those trucks off the inner-city streets,” he said. Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said the council welcomes the long tunnel, but a ramp to the south of the freeway will impact local Spotswood industry, residents, recreation areas and the local kindergarten. Three construction consortiums have been shortlisted. Construction will begin in 2018 and be completed by 2022. Public information sessions begin in Footscray on Monday. The state government has headed off a clash with Maribyrnong council and Yarraville residents by announcing three-kilometre twin tunnels beneath Yarraville to connect directly with the West Gate Freeway. A design for the $5.5 billion Western Distributor tollway, released on Sunday, confirms the new tunnels will begin west of Williamstown Road, rather than the alternative shorter tunnel starting on industrial Yarraville land linked to the freeway by flyover ramps. The decision was welcomed by Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald and community groups Concerned Locals of Yarraville (CLoY) and Friends of Stony Creek. CLoY spokesman Scott Ellerton said the group would continue to have input on ramp alignment, ventilation stack standards and locations, noise barriers and truck curfews. Hobsons Bay council and Spotswood South Kingsville Western Distributor Residents Group (SSKRG) are upset that one of two new ramps funnelling dangerous-goods trucks directly between Hyde Street and the freeway will pass close to sports fields and a kindergarten. The state government says the ramps will be as close as possible to each side of – and level to or lower than – the existing West Gate Freeway. But SSKRG spokeswoman Grace Guinto said that by moving trucks closer to Emma McLean Kindergarten, Donald McLean Reserve and Spotswood residents, the government had just pushed the problem to “the other side [south] of the freeway”. “Considering a key objective of this

Budget 2016-17 Hobsons Bay City Council has adopted its 2016-17 Budget. In Cherry Lake Ward, highlights include: $3.1 million towards the first three stages of the Kororoit Creek trail; $1.1 million to upgrade the JK Grant Reserve pavilion; $680,000 towards the Early Years Facility in Altona/Seaholme; $400,000 for the Brooklyn EPA Improvement Project; $360,000 to review the Altona Central Precinct (Civic Centre, Altona Theatre, Depot, Altona Library, Youth Hall, etc.); $320,000 to rehabilitate Chambers Road/Ross Road, Altona North; $244,000 to mend the road in Buchanan Street, Brooklyn; $150,000 to upgrade the synthetic surface at Altona Hockey field; $130,000 to improve the Cherry Lake car park; $50,000 to renew

Accessible Beaches Council will work towards creating two fully accessible beaches by 2020 following a successful trial last summer, which included an accessible beach wheelchair at Altona Beach and beach matting at Williamstown Beach. To build on the success of the trial, additional equipment is needed, such as matting at Altona Beach and an online booking system. Extra beach wheelchairs in a variety of models and a Changing Places toilet with hoist are also needed. The trial would not have been possible without the support of Altona Lifesaving Club, Williamstown Swimming and
Lifesaving Club, local businesses and the Altona Village Traders Association.
Brooklyn Community Group Council has been working with the Brooklyn community on a project to bring events and activities to Brooklyn. What started as a letterbox drop last October has resulted in an informal pop-up party where more than 100 people attended, an Easter egg hunt at Duane Reserve where over 100 people enjoyed the festivities and a movie night in May where more than 65 people of all ages came. Festival axing raises outcry A left-field decision to shut down the signature Big West Festival has shocked the western suburbs’ arts community, leaving people bewildered and dismayed. Arts workers and other residents reacted angrily to the festival board’s unexpected decision to ‘retire’ the festival by the end of this year. A public meeting has been called for tonight [Wednesday] to hear how the board justified its decision and to consider ways the festival may be kept going. Footscray artist and former board member Hoang Tran Nguyen, who is spokesman for new community group Save Big West, said the sudden announcement came as a shock. “This festival is unique in the west – and, you might even argue, out of the west – in that no other organisation is exploring communitybased art in this way, using public spaces and working with groups and schools in the way Big West does,” he said. “This has been an exciting and innovative arts program and a celebration for the community.” Big West Festival chairwoman Kirsty Ellem said in a statement the board’s unanimous decision to retire the organisation followed “a period of careful consideration”. She said the Big West Festival was created in 1997 to address issues of geographic, cultural and social isolation among residents, and to challenge perceptions of Melbourne’s west as culturally impoverished. “The need for our contribution in the
contemporary landscape has changed,” she said. “We are excited that the west is evolving as an engaged, resilient and creative community, blessed with a wide range of organisations that deliver high-quality, cutting-edge, multicultural and multi-artform programs.” Ms Ellem said the decision was not based on current arts funding challenges.

Local musician and composer Peter Knight said consultation had been “inadequate”, while theatre and festival director Ian Pidd dubbed the decision “a massive failure of imagination”. “[It] looks like another example of arts managers making highly destructive ‘rational’ strategic choices without the input of artists and communities,” Mr Pidd said. Former Big West board chair Dr Yoni Prior said she was bewildered by the decision and alarmed at the impact it would have. Marjorie hits the ton Marjorie Sculley may not be Altona’s oldest resident, but the centenarian has lived in the suburb longer than anyone else. Mrs Sculley celebrated her 100th birthday on Tuesday, but her official party with family and friends will be held on Saturday. Her family moved to Altona in 1920 when her father, Harold, was involved in building Altona Primary School. Mrs Sculley (then Marjorie Phair) is the school’s oldest-known former pupil and last year attended its centenary celebrations. Her father died soon after she started school, leaving her mother, Harriet, to support the family by running the school tuck shop. At 24, Mrs Sculley married Noel Richardson and they built their home close to the beach in

Truck curfew spreads By Benjamin Millar Trucks have been banned from one of the inner-west’s busiest routes during school crossing times. Curfews on Francis Street at Yarraville have been extended to cover morning pick-up and drop-off times. The 8-9.30am and 2.30-4pm bans near Wembley Primary School follow the introduction of a similar curfew last year outside Kingsville Primary School on Somerville Road. Visiting Francis Street on Monday to announce the curfews, Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan said similar bans on Somerville Road had led to a 71 per cent decline in truck volumes. “It’s just a continuation of the work that the government is doing in terms of removing the trucks off inner-city streets of the west,â€? he said. “It’s very much a community effort and an industry effort. The VTA [Victorian Transport Association] has done a lot of good work on this, and it’s one of their initiatives to work with the community and provide a safer, more enjoyable environment.â€? Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the curfew would follow work done last year to install a red light and speed camera on the corner of Wembley Avenue and Francis Street. He said the school community approached him last year following the decrease in truck traffic along Somerville Road. “There’s indication that when you place curfews on some roads, trucks will use others ‌ but this is a choice to prioritise the safety of the community, particularly children going to and from school.â€? Burnt body ‘not suspicious’ The discovery of a woman’s body at Altona beach on Monday morning is not being treated as suspicious, police say. The partially burnt body was found by a woman at 8.40am, about 200 metres east of Maidstone Street. Following a post-mortem examination, homicide squad detectives are no longer investigating. The unidentified woman was possibly in her 70s and police are asking anyone who saw an elderly woman in the area on Monday morning to come forward. They are also asking people to check on family members or friends in the area who are about the same age, and to contact police if they believe someone they know is missing. Police would not provide further detail as to how the woman suffered her burns but are assuming it happened on Sunday night. Grant seals deal for new jobs By Benjamin Millar A state government grant is helping cap off a high-tech upgrade to a West Footscray manufacturer. Guala Closures will use its $166,000 grant to help the bottle cap company invest in new state-of-the-art equipment, boost exports and create a dozen new jobs. Williamstown MP and state industry and employment minister Wade Noonan announced the funding at a visit to the factory on Friday. The grant means Guala Closures will
install new precision cameras that will improve the quality of the bottle caps it makes. The Guala Closures Group supplies aluminium caps to some of Australia’s leading beverage companies and employs more than 4000 people around the world. It has manufactured more than 14 billion caps since it was founded in Italy in 1954. Mr Noonan said the grant for Guala Closures is part of the government’s Future Industries manufacturing program and will help create new jobs and secure the company’s future. “Our focus is on growing the economy by
supporting businesses, both large and small, to transition to an advanced manufacturing future,” he said. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said manufacturing businesses like Guala Closures are at the heart of industry in Melbourne’s west with this funding boost helping to drive more local jobs. Green grows the West The red, white and blue of the Footscray Bulldogs will be joined by a splash of green in this Sunday’s clash with Casey Scorpions at Whitten Oval. The Dogs will be barking up the right tree as they don green socks for the Round 15 VFL showdown as a show of support for the Greening the West initiative. Greening the West spokesman and City West Water general manager Cameron FitzGerald said the program brings together 23 organisations including City West Water, LeadWest, local councils, government agencies, industry and community groups. “The partnership is changing the shape of the western suburbs by securing federal government funding to deliver one million new trees for Melbourne’s west … as well as creating new parks and revitalising open spaces.” Mr FitzGerald said the Footscray Bulldogs were an obvious choice to help spread the
message that more trees and green spaces will make suburbs more liveable and boost community health and wellbeing. “We’re encouraging residents to come along to the game and support the program on the day, as well as going along to their local council’s events for National Tree Day on July 31,” he said. The match-day promotion will include giveaways, a half-time handball competition and information about how people can become involved in greening the west. The partner of a senior Mongol bikie has been granted bail while awaiting court on charges including trying to intimidate a witness in an armed robbery case. Renee Sue Comeadow, 26, was arrested on May 26 after police raided the Seabrook home she shared with Shane Middleton, believed to be the Mongols sergeant-at-arms. Wind downs trees

Council rejects cycle cash claim By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council has rejected claims it spends barely half of what it should on cycling infrastructure and is falling well behind neighbouring councils. Bicycle Network’s 2016 Bicycle Expenditure Index (BiXE) says Maribyrnong is among the lowest-spending councils in Australia, at just $2.56 per person. This compares to $10.25 per person in Moonee Valley and $13.32 in Melbourne. But the council has defended its record, claiming the advocacy group’s index has historically failed to include its full expenditure.
Director of infrastructure services Sunil Bhalla said the council could not comment on the $2.56 BiXE figure as it was unaware of how the calculation was done. He said Bicycle Network’s 2012 finding that Maribyrnong spent less per head of population than any other council in Melbourne, at just 91 cents, was inaccurate. He said the council had committed about $3.94 per person per year in the previous three financial years, as well as sourcing state and federal funding that took the figure closer to $30. “Council has maintained a high level of funding for cycling initiatives since then, with
apparent shortfall in spending, especially on safe on-road cycling. “There are many bike lane black holes in Maribyrnong, which put cyclists at risk, yet the council is investing very little,” she said. “Maribyrnong is so close to the city and so many entertainment areas. It should be a cyclist’s dream. Instead, the lack of bike lanes makes it really unsafe and discourages riders.” She said the west needed to catch up with the inner north and east to create a less congested, healthier and more efficient transport system. Mr Bhalla said the council would continue to push VicRoads and the state government for improvements to the bicycle network.

Angels take on The Beast Newport’s Amanda Elmer lost her father and nanna to what she calls The Beast – motor neurone disease. Footballing great Neale Daniher has put the disease in the spotlight, and Ms Elmer is joining a fundraising event named in his honour and dedicated to finding a cure. “Sadly, my family is all too familiar with this disease,” Ms Elmer said. “My dad died of MND in 2013. He was diagnosed in 2012. “My poor father knew this disease all too well, as it had also taken the life of his beloved mum 30 years earlier. You cannot imagine his fear when it was confirmed that he also had this paralysing disease. It was just devastating to see my dad deteriorate so dramatically.” Harvey Sykes was 64 when he died. Ms Sykes said the disease had no treatment, no cure and no survivors.
“In losing dad to it, he would have been so surprised at the amount of awareness now,” she said. “When dad passed away … people had never heard of it. Nanna was a really proud person – very well kept and beautiful hair … when she was deteriorating she asked that none of us would go and see her.” Ms Elmer has formed a team called Harvey’s Angels, in honour of her father, to participate in the Drive for Daniher. The four-member team must raise $4000 by August 4 to qualify for the four-day road trip to raise awareness and funds to help fight MND. It has raised just above $1000 to date. The Greens candidate for Gellibrand in the recent federal election will stand in Strand ward in the upcoming Hobsons Bay council poll. Williamstown resident Jonathon Marsden received almost 21 per cent of first preference votes in Gellibrand – which was retained by Labor’s Tim Watts – representing a 4.16 per cent swing to the Greens. His running mate in Strand ward will be Susanne Miller. Strand ward, covering Williamstown, Newport and Spotswood, was the most hotly contested area at the 2013 election with 16 candidates. It was won by councillors Angela Altair, Peter Hemphill and Paul Morgan. Mr Marsden said there may be a third Greens candidate running. “The idea is basically to challenge every available spot in Strand ward,” he said. “That’s where the majority of our membership is and our strongest Greens vote is along the railway line.” Mr Marsden said he was running to improve the basics of service delivery. “The nuts and bolts of drainage, footpaths, those sort of things, need a lot of work because of the age of the infrastructure in Williamstown, in particular,” he said. “We’ve also got our eye very much on the mangroves at the end of Strand ward under the bridge there, which could be affected by the Western Distributor proposal.

Council rejects six-storey plan By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has refused to grant a permit for a six-storey development which would have been Altona’s tallest residential building. The tallest in Altona is currently five storeys. Developer Redleigh Investments proposed to build a six-storey apartment block and retail centre on the corner of Sargood and Blyth streets. The site currently has two single-storey houses on it.
Redleigh submitted plans to the council for a 35-dwelling residential development, with two shops, an office and 63 on-site parking spaces – 12 fewer than required under the council planning scheme. Forty-two objections were submitted to the council, with residents raising concerns about the scale of the development, its appearance and the extent of the parking reduction being sought. A special planning committee meeting to discuss the proposal was held on Thursday, when councillors Peter Hemphill, Carl
“Our concern from here is to ensure council resource a rigorous defence of the decision, as well as expediting the required policy work to constrain building heights in and around the Pier Street precinct,” he said. The developer has 60 days to appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The architect acting for the developer, Vincent Interlandi, said he had not received an official instruction from his client on whether the matter would proceed to the tribunal. “I can only speculate the answer would be ‘yes’,” he said.
Marsich and Jason Price defied an officer’s recommendation to allow the development. They refused the proposal on 11 grounds, including that it was an over development of the site, failed to provide an adequate level of residential amenity, had inadequate carparking layout and access and was contrary to orderly and proper planning. Altona Community Action Group spokesman Aaron Hunt said residents were “glad the councillors shared their concerns about inappropriate and opportunistic developments such as this”.
How our kids see 2030 Young children have been consulted as part of Hobsons Bay council’s projected plans for the municipality in 2030. The children’s ideas have been compiled in a new book, The past is behind us, the future lies ahead, launched at Altona North library last week. Suggestions included a cleaner Cherry Lake with a waterslide and dance floor and a glow-in-the-dark park in Pier Street. More sombre suggestions included less pollution, a free food garden and more homes for lost dogs. Mayor Peter Hemphill said more than 100 pupils from six primary schools contributed. “We wanted to find out what primary school age-children thought of Hobsons Bay and how they thought it could be improved in the future,” he said. “A number of the themes the students presented about the future of Hobsons Bay are
the same themes that have come up repeatedly throughout the 2030 consultation – things like improving our open spaces and our beaches… providing the conditions for a healthier, happy community.” The six primary schools involved were Altona, Altona Meadows, Seaholme, Spotswood, Altona North and Yarraville Special Developmental School. The book is available at Hobsons Bay library branches and the civic centre. Hobsons Bay 2030 is the council’s long-term vision document for the municipality. The next stage involves up to 60 randomly selected community representatives reviewing feedback from community consultations to date. MY PLACE Williamstown’s Mario Del Grosso is pursuing his love of art later in life. He speaks to Goya Dmytryshchak.
I was born in Williamstown. My parents came from Italy in the early ’60s and settled in Williamstown. My mother was heavily pregnant when my parents were making the trip over from Italy, so I was conceived in Italia but born at Williamstown Hospital. I grew up here and went to school locally. I went to St Mary’s Primary School and then St Paul’s College. And I don’t take it for granted that I’ve been given an opportunity to study something I absolutely love as a mature-age student, which I think is something not to be taken lightly: to be able to resume studies after doing an apprenticeship at an earlier age and running my own business. Having the opportunity to resume studies is a luxury. I’m 54 and I started on this journey of art studies when my son completed VCE and that was because, as a parent, I got some time back for myself and started channelling that into things I’ve always been passionate about and interested in. That was about five years ago. What are you passionate about? My passion has always been art and aesthetics. I draw on inspiration from architecture, from the renaissance which evolved in Florence. I’ve been to Florence on three occasions and done courses in the renaissance. And then I became a recipient of a
scholarship program where I’ve just been trained and graduated a week ago at the National Gallery of Victory. What are your hopes for the future? I just want to continue at my point in life at the moment, when I have the time to channel into studying art. I want to continue on that journey at Melbourne Uni and make regular annual visits to different regions of Italy and focus on various aspects and movements in the art world. What do you like about Williamstown? Its close proximity to the city. The water is a beautiful vista as you visit the beach or along the marina. And its community feel. What would you change? I think it’s great to see new restaurants coming in to the area and lifting the level of food cuisine and service. I think it would be great to see us become what Yarraville offers now. What’s your favourite eatery or cafe? I’ve had a wonderful meal with my son recently at Mascalzone, a new Italian restaurant in Nelson Place. And my favourite cafe would be Jazz Cafe in Ferguson Street. Both places offer lovely food and good service and are very attentive to your needs.

TOFFEE TIME I have always loved Werther’s Original Chewy Toffees, but why didn’t anyone tell me they can be melted and used as a slice topping? As soon as I saw this recipe in That’s Life! magazine, I knew I had to try it. The salty-sweet combination of toffees, pretzels and peanut butter was too good to resist. Plus – there is no baking required! It worked beautifully, as you can see by the photo I took. You can put pretzels on top of the slice if you like, but as there are already pretzels in the base, I thought a sprinkling of peanuts was more than enough. If you love salted caramel, you’ll love this slice.

2/3 cup icing sugar 1 cup crunchy peanut butter 100g butter, at room temperature 4 cups crushed pretzels 2 tablespoons thickened cream 2 x 135g packets Werther’s Original Chewy Toffees (unwrapped of course!) ¼ cup unsalted peanuts, roughly chopped Grease and line a 20-centimetre square cake pan with baking paper. Using electric beaters, beat icing sugar, peanut butter and butter until creamy. Stir through crushed pretzels. Press firmly into base of prepared cake pan and chill. Place cream and toffees into a small saucepan and stir over a low heat until melted and smooth. Simmer and stir for one minute then remove from heat. Spread toffee mixture over the chilled base. Sprinkle with peanuts. Refrigerate until firm then cut into squares.

SPORT Game on in Rio for Altona hockey star Long-time Altona Hockey Club star Matthew Guest is about to reach the pinnacle of his chosen sport. The forward has been named in Canada’s hockey squad for next month’s Rio Olympic Games. Guest, who lives in Kingsville, has dual citizenship and has been a member of the Canadian team for eight years. The 31-year-old has more than 100 international caps for Canada. He was part of two silver medal-winning performances at Pan-Am Games – in Guadalajara in 2011 and Toronto in 2015, the latter booking his team’s spot in Rio. Guest works as an emergency doctor at Williamstown Hospital. He has been based in Vancouver in the lead-up to the Olympics.
Altona could have made use of Guest on Saturday, as it lost 5-0 to Powerhouse/St Kilda at McKenzie Pavilion. The Seagulls had no answers to opponents who will go close to winning the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league title this season. Footscray lost 4-2 to Waverley at Hedley Hull Field. The Bulldogs remain candidates for relegation in what has been a tough season. In women’s premier league, Altona strengthened its finals bid with a 3-2 win on the road over Mentone. do you make of a very proud and famous football club – one which is exceptionally well run and well resourced and with outstanding success at every level throughout its history – having to forfeit matches two weeks in a row? I refer to Spotswood Football Club, who could not field a reserves team two weeks ago and an under-19 side last weekend. The club has a massive injury list although, to be honest, it’s not the only club where numbers at senior and under-age levels are an issue and the drop-off in numbers is a definite worry. The overall participation figures tell a different story but they are heavily weighted by the influx of female players at all age levels. The fact that there are only 10 clubs with teams in the WRFL under-19 competition is not healthy, even given this is the first year of the age realignment. We’re continually being told about the population growth in the western region but that isn’t being reflected in numbers playing sport in general, not just football. The WRFL has 25 senior clubs but only 18 are involved in the under-17 competition, and a few of those – Williamstown Juniors, St Bernards, Point Cook and Werribee Centrals – don’t field teams in the WRFL senior leagues. This means only 14 senior teams have under-17s, so where are the players of the future? This isn’t a problem exclusive to the WRFL … it’s happening everywhere. There’s no doubt the elite will always be there because the rewards are so great, but let’s not forget that elite players need teammates. WRFL-produced superstars like Callan Ward, Brad Johnson, Lachie Hunter and Bachar Houli needed 21 other blokes to help them achieve their sporting dreams. The participants who play such a vital role in the formative years of AFL superstars seem to be overlooked and, from what I have seen, local clubs get to see very little, if any, of the big money that drives this football industry. If clubs like Spotswood are struggling we have a problem that needs to be addressed.

Scray eyes fixed on ball By Lance Jenkinson It was a toned-down celebration for Footscray after Saturday’s stunning come-from-behind 11-9 win over western rivals Williamstown in Lacrosse Victoria’s men’s state league game at Angliss Reserve. The Scray kept their top-two hopes alive, coming back from two goals down at the end of the third period to snatch an unlikely victory. Scray co-captain Chris Plumb told Star Weekly it was only the start of a tough block of matches that would shape their season, and there would be no taking eyes off the ball. “It was an important one, but the next couple of weeks are going to be important for us as well,” Plumb said. “It was just good to get another win to help our finals campaign. “We want to finish the season one or two, where you get a double chance in the finals.” With six rounds to go, three teams share top spot with 9-2 records.
Williamstown, Surrey Park and Footscray – in order of goal difference – will play musical chairs in that time. The Scray’s first test will come against fourth-placed Eltham at home on Saturday. They go into the clash with a pep in their step. “We’ve got heaps of confidence going into next week,” Plumb said. Scray goalkeeper Callan Ahrens left his fingerprints all over the victory over Williamstown. Ahrens set the tone early with a number of big saves. And he guarded his side’s lead late on, to claim best-on-field honours. “He probably lifted the team more than anyone,” Plumb said. “He made some massive saves at the start of the game in the first 10 minutes. “Coming into the last quarter, when it was tight and we were down, he again made some brilliant saves.” Jonathan Maher scored three goals for Footscray, while there were two each for
co-captain James Lawerson, Peter Kwas and Dane Kowal. Kyle Rhatigan finished with three assists. A feature of Footscray’s play was their willingness to share the load. “These days, it’s more everyone working together,” Plumb said. “It’s good that everyone is getting a touch of the ball and a piece of the action.” For Williamstown, Paul Werner was a stand-out with four goals. Matthew Price also came to the party with three goals and an assist. The Fearons spot at the top of the ladder is vulnerable, while they have a week off with the bye. In women’s state league, Footscray had a comfortable 11-2 win over Caulfield at the Footscray Hockey Centre. Sarah Mollison continued her fine season with four points. Her latest tally included two goals and two assists.

Phoenix shows true colours in second half comeback Altona East Phoenix’s season had but a faint pulse 45 minutes into Saturday’s game. Staring a two-goal deficit in the face at half-time, the Phoenix were in grave danger of being sucked deeper into the relegation quick sand. Already in a precarious position and on the road, the second-last Phoenix faced off against top-five side Sydenham Park in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 at Keilor Lodge Reserve. They knew they had to get something out of the game, but a win would be a bonus beyond their wildest dreams. But living up to their name, the Phoenix rose to the occasion, producing their best half of football for the season, and scoring an incredible four goals, for a runaway 4-2 win. All of a sudden, the pulse that was barely a
flicker at half-time turned into a thumping beat, resurrecting Phoenix’s survival hopes. They are now just a point away from the safety positions. “I’d be surprised if we don’t pick up a few wins coming home now,” Phoenix president Jim Dimitriou told Star Weekly. “The boys have finally got belief in themselves, they’re working well as a team. “We scored four goals in half a game of football. Even though it’s late, we’re starting to turn it around, and we’ll be a very hard team to beat going forward.” While Altona East was down 2-0 at half-time, this was not a true reflection of how the first 45 minutes were played. Sydenham made the most of limited attacking opportunities, while the Phoenix came up empty handed after several chances.
“We hit the post, missed a couple of good opportunities and, against the run of play, they scored twice. We were under the pump, but the guys didn’t lose confidence. “The coach told the boys to keep fighting … that’s what they did, they kept fighting and came back and won.” Liam Francis was the catalyst for Altona East’s win. The youngster scored two goals and had a hand in another. Paul Galea also finished with a double for the Phoenix. The Phoenix is hoping new coach Paul Falzon and mid-season additions Damir Marusic, Ralph Napoli and Lester Abalos can help stave off relegation this season. Vikings fall just short By Lance Jenkinson Altona still has some navigating to do before it can reach the destination mapped out by coach Saade Ghazi. The Vikings are striving to become a consistent top-three side and premiership contender in the WRFL division 1, but remain a work in progress. “We’re not that far away, but we’re not there yet,” Ghazi told Star Weekly. The gap between the top three and the rest is still significant enough to cast doubts over Altona’s ability to break into the top three this season. That’s why Ghazi has one eye on the now and another looking ahead to a promising 12-24 months. “As a footy club, we’ve got a really good solid base … probably more than a base now,” he said. “It’s not just this year, it’s next year and the year after. That’s our goal.” Altona demonstrated its so-near-yet-so-far tale in Saturday’s 20-point loss to Hoppers Crossing at Grant Reserve. but could not seal the deal with a consistent four-quarter performance. Honourable losses do not cut it where Ghazi wants to take his Vikings team. “They had a three-goal buffer most of the game that we couldn’t peg back,” Ghazi said. “We just didn’t have enough polish to get in front of them and stay in front. “Our goal is to become a top-three club and to do that you have to beat the clubs above. “At the moment, Deer Park, Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Districts are those three clubs and there’s probably a gap to the rest of us.” But what is heartening for the Altona faithful is the exciting crop of youngsters blooded into the senior team. The Vikings have used 35 players this season, many with bright futures at the club, and the defence has featured a trio of exciting teenagers in Kelly Pickard, James Goetz and Tom Szanyi. The club lost a fair bit of experience in the off-season, but it has provided opportunities for these youngsters to play a part. Over the next two years, these “kids” will turn into men and Ghazi will drip-feed a star
recruit here and there to turn the side into a contender. “We’ve got to keep [playing the youngsters], but at the same time we’d like to get some experienced players back, maybe a few who have travelled this year and then try to pick up one or two at the top end,” he said. Despite the loss to Hoppers, it was an exciting day for Altona with the debut of Heath Rafferty, the younger brother of Josh and Trent. All three Rafferty brothers played together in the seniors for the first time. “It was really exciting for the family,” Ghazi said. “Their mum and dad were really proud.” Captain Jordan Robbins produced another stellar performance in the midfield for the Vikings. “We expect that from Jordy, he’s an elite player,” Ghazi said. Mitch Turnbull kicked three goals, while Robbins and Josh Rafferty snared two each. Altona faces a stern test to keep hold of fourth spot when they face fifth-placed Spotswood away at McLean Reserve on Saturday. The Woodsmen will be looking to bounce back after losing to Deer Park by 77 points.
It was a rare occurrence last Wednesday night when all three City West Falcons sides suffered losses in the Victorian Netball League. Wins have been more the norm at the club this season, so to see all three teams bowing out was a shock. The championship side suffered its first loss since round one, going down in a thriller to the DC North East Blaze. The Falcons led at the first break before being held to single-figure goals in the middle two quarters, which stacked the odds against them. They trailed by nine goals at the last break, with a win appearing increasingly out of reach. The Falcons saved their best to last – a 20-goal final term – but it was too little to late as they went down 53-51. Kath Knott shot 25 goals from 29 attempts, while Jane Cook didn’t miss a shot on her way to 22. The Falcons gave up top spot and now trail Melbourne University Lightning on percentage with four rounds to go. In division 1, the Falcons were left to rue a poor first quarter in the top-of-the-table clash with the Blaze. The Blaze jumped out of the blocks for a 19-8 first quarter, leaving the Falcons to play catch-up for the rest of the game. In fact, they got the margin back to five goals at the last break, but the lead against them proved to be too much, and they lost 47-41. In under-19s, the Falcons lost to second placed Blaze, 40-34. The Blaze’s lead was out to double figures at the last change before the Falcons produced their best quarter of the match to reduce the margin. Tara Murray

Gulls soar above Hawks By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown has taken a liking to the unique conditions at Box Hill City Oval. The Seagulls used their win over Box Hill Hawks in the final round last season as a launching pad to premiership glory. And they hope Saturday’s hard-fought 10-point win over the Hawks can be a another springboard to a top-four finish in what is becoming an increasingly tight race at the top of the VFL ladder. The Seagulls are one of four teams in positions one to four on 36 points jostling for double chance positions. “There’s definitely a logjam up there,” Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon told Star Weekly. “There are games every week that are critical in the context of the season. “It’s absolutely critical you just keep banking wins and that’s what we’re all about. We’re not looking too far ahead; we’re just trying to get the four points each week. “You can’t afford to drop your guard at all given the evenness of the competition.” The ground conditions at Box Hill made for a two-paced game, which suited Williamstown down to a tee.
The middle of the ground was gooey, which suited the hard in-and-under types. Outside the centre square, it was a truer playing surface, which put a premium on winning the centre clearances to give your runners first use of the ball. “It was like two games at times,” Dixon said. “The ball was sticking in the mud in the centre, but around the ground it was a pretty quick game.” The centre square bog was tailor-made for Seagulls ruckman Nick Meese, who played a significant role in the victory. He relished conditions so much that he required a fresh jumper at half-time because the Seagulls colours were unrecognisable. The experienced big man finished with 51 hit-outs, 18 possessions and five tackles. “His ruck work went a long way to us getting that centre clearance dominance we needed,” Dixon said. “The slow traffic in the middle of the ground is always going to favour him and he was just a monster in there. He dictated the game for us.” If there was a player who thrived in both mud and on the pristine wings, it was Willie Wheeler. The Seagulls onballer was the standout player from both sides with 35 possessions, 11 clearances and a goal.
“He was clearly the best player on the ground and it went a long way to us winning the game,” Dixon said. Jake Owen turned back the clock with three goals for the Seagulls. Owen was once talked about as having AFL rookie list potential, but an elbow injury has clouded that view over the past 12 months. It was a game in which Owen re-captured something resembling his form of two years ago. “We’ve sort of been waiting for him to get back to that 2014 form when he burst onto the scene,” Dixon said. “He had that elbow injury last year which restricted him, but it’s great to see him back playing good senior footy. He’s such a difficult match-up because of his mobility and height.” The other shining light for the Seagulls was Caleb Hislop. The Tasmanian was scintillating in only his second game at the level with 28 possessions and 11 clearances. “He’s an exciting prospect,” Dixon said. “Hopefully it highlights our depth and shows what we’re trying to build at development level, having guys ready when they step up.” Williamstown will face an improving Coburg in a danger game at Burbank Oval on Sunday.
It was a rare chance for the Western Jets to leave the excuses at the front door. The Jets had valid reasons why their talented team was sitting outside the TAC Cup top eight so deep into the campaign. They had been hampered by Vic Metro commitments of their star players and the unavailability of private school-linked players making a run for the school football finals, so getting a full strength side out on the park was proving the hardest task of all. The team they faced, Eastern Ranges, was in a similar predicament. It entered the weekend with an identical 4-8 record to the Jets and had an even bigger Big V representation. For the first time in a long time, both clubs had full lists and it was perfect timing with a top eight spot up for grabs. The excuses were over, so who wanted it more? Not the Jets, who served up their worst performance of the season in a 90-point loss at Rams Arena in Craigieburn. Jets coach Torin Baker was understandably left feeling flat by the result. Seven unanswered second quarter goals to Eastern Ranges and the game was over. “They just dominated the contested ball and clearances and that was the game,” Baker said. The finals could already be beyond the Jets. They are a game and percentage out of the top eight with a tough run home.
