Hip-hop dude is true blue A photo featuring Footscray entertainer Ocoro has snapped up the $1000 first prize in a photography contest. Art Thai Studio photographer Wirut Khemnak won Victoria University’s Picturing Bluscray competition with his street scene portrait of Ocoro, the Footscray ‘hip-hop master’ in pensive pose and draped with the Australian flag. Almost 100 photographers entered 218 images in the competition, judged by award-winning Age photographer Simon O’Dwyer. Mr Khemnak said Ocoro stood out as an obvious choice. “He’s dancing every day to make everyone happy so I thought, there’s the one. I asked, ‘Can I take your photo?’ because he looked very natural.” Mr Khemnak, who arrived in Australia from Bangkok five years ago, says people still misunderstand Footscray. “I’ve been working here for four years. When I arrive everyone tells me Footscray is not a good place. But when I come here I say it is a beautiful suburb, people are friendly, you can eat many types of food.” Ocoro, known for his street performances, says he wants people to realise what a great place Footscray is. Bold plans for riverbank By Benjamin Millar One of Melbourne’s largest food and bar venues has been flagged for Footscray’s riverbank. ‘Welcome to Footscray’, a 750-patron licensed “community food hall” featuring a permanent bar and a rotating roster of food trucks, is planned for the vast 1100-square-metre ground level of The Dream Factory, previously home to Lonely Planet. The building’s 720-square-metre rooftop terrace could also open as a 230-patron venue for events such as festivals, weddings and rooftop cinema. The venture is loosely based upon, and backed by the team behind, the popular Welcome to

Thornbury bar and food truck stop and other Melbourne food venues the Brunswick Mess Hall, Homeslice, Fancy Hanks and Mr Burger. The Dream Factory general manager James Fitzgerald said the venue would be filled with greenery and have four or five food trucks each day from late afternoon into the evening. Mr Fitzgerald said he planned to open Welcome to Footscray in The Dream Factory by next February, pending council approval. “We’ve always had a vision for this building of activating that bottom part,” he said. “I think the council shares this vision.” The community food hall would replicate the food truck park concept but be “more sophisticated” than Welcome to Thornbury.

“There will be a Mr Burgers, but we also want the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in there, we want these other food start-ups in Footscray,” Mr Fitzgerald said. “You can see in Yarraville Gardens the local community really loves that concept of these food trucks, but obviously there has been some contention around the trucks in the park.” Mr Fitzgerald said the western suburbs had been crying out for community-focused food and beverage locations, and he wants to “dispel that myth that food trucks are about people coming and trashing the joint”. “It’s about people coming together, a community feeling proud about a space. space, open and with a greenery focus.” A planning report lodged with Maribyrnong council notes the area’s non-residential zoning “eliminates amenity impacts” associated with licensed venues. An emergency evacuation plan will be developed to deal with the property’s proximity to the Coode Island petrochemical storage facility. Mr Fitzgerald said building owner Impact Investment Group wanted a collaborative approach and would work with neighbours to ensure the project runs smoothly. A 10 per cent slice of the venture’s earnings will be made available to local design, tech and social change businesses via a special Footscray Future Fund.

Shorten, Watts build on leads As the federal election result remains on a knife’s edge, Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten is holding on to slender hopes of becoming the country’s prime minister. The Labor leader was comfortably returned to the seat he has held since 2007 as party colleagues Tim Watts in Gellibrand and Joanne Ryan in Lalor both extended their healthy margins. Mr Shorten enjoyed a 1.14 per cent two-party preferred swing to collect 62.53

per cent of the vote over Liberal rival Ted Hatzakortzian. Mr Shorten told Star Weekly it was an honour to be returned as the member for Maribyrnong. “I thank the voters of Maribyrnong for again putting their trust in me, and will work hard every day for our community,” he said. “I’ve spent my life standing up for equality and opportunity for all, and I will continue to do so.” Maribyrnong Greens candidate Olivia Ball said the party was pleased to attract 9.34 per cent of the vote in a seat where the incumbent

had become leader of the opposition since the last election. Mr Hatzakortzian did not respond by deadline. Tim Watts recorded a 2.48 per cent swing in Gellibrand to increase Labor’s two-party preferred vote to 69.01 per cent. He said that although the exact outcome of the election might not be known for days, people in Melbourne’s west “have comprehensively rejected the Liberal Party’s extreme ideological agenda”. Greens candidate Jonathon Marsden said progressive policies and hard-working

Women’s club still sticking at it Williamstown Women’s Lacrosse Club will hold an 80th anniversary celebration on Friday. Vivienne Parker-White said her mother and founder, Joy Parker, would have been so proud of what is now Australia’s oldest and largest women’s lacrosse club. Back when the club started in 1936, it was uncommon for women to play team sports, said Ms Parker-White, a fifth-generation Williamstown resident who has represented Australia in lacrosse. She said her father played the game, prompting her mother to take it up and start a women’s team with like-minded women playing with hand-me-down sticks from the junior men’s team. “Then along came the war and the women’s game went into recession,” Ms Parker-White said. “It came to the early 1960s and, of course, the Williamstown men were still going very strong and a lot of sisters, mothers and girlfriends were interested in playing lacrosse. “They made an approach to a man called Malcolm Taylor, who was the men’s ‘stick doctor’. If you had a problem with your stick, you took it to him and he would look after it. “He directed these people to my mother to see if she would be interested in restarting the women’s club, which she did.” The women’s club officially started again in 1962, as did the Victorian Women’s Lacrosse Association. The Australian Women’s Lacrosse Council also started that same year. Ms Parker-White’s mother served as president of all three groups. Ms Parker-White herself started playing lacrosse in 1968 and later she, too, became president of the club. She said her mother would be absolutely thrilled at the club’s anniversary. The site of the former Half Moon Caravan Park in Brooklyn is on the market, going to auction with a $3 million-plus price tag and planning approval for 28 warehouses. The property was previously sold before auction in 2010 when it was believed to have fetched close to its preauction estimate of $2 million. Prior to the 2010 sale, the Miller family had owned the land at 1-9 Millers Road since the 1880s. The caravan park was built in 1956. Current selling agent JLL is quoting more than $3 million for the site, which is now vacant following the caravan park’s closure. Hobsons Bay council worked with ISIS Primary Care, Cohealth, the Salvation Army and other outreach services to rehouse 73 residents into alternative accommodation. JLL director Cameron Hunter said the 5022-square-metre site was prominently located with frontages to Geelong Road, Francis Street and Millers Road. “Opportunities like this don’t come up very often, so we’ve had very good interest in the first two weeks of the campaign,” Mr Hunter said. “The site provides flexibility in that it has a permit for 28 warehouses already, but due to the exposure … we’ve also had interest from service station groups, self-storage operators and childcare facilities. We’ve had 65 inquiries in one week.” An on-site auction will be held at noon on July 28.

Apartments to transform skyline By Benjamin Millar A cluster of more than 900 apartments spread across six towers soaring up to 24 storeys high will be added to the Footscray skyline in one of the largest developments ever approved in the suburb. The six buildings, ranging from 10 to 24 storeys, will be built in three stages near the Maribyrnong River at 4 Hopkins Street. The $355 million project on the former Le Mans Toyota site has been given the green light by state Planning Minister Richard Wynne. The 1.3-hectare site was sold in 2014 for a

reported $18.7 million by government agency Places Victoria, which had paid $21 million for the site in 2011. Mr Wynne said Melbourne was predicted to outgrow Sydney within a few decades and housing policies needed to balance growth and liveability. He said the 930 new one, two and three-bedroom apartments would be above ground floor retail space. “Encouraging sustainable development in appropriate in-fill sites like this will help to more sustainably meet the needs of Victoria’s growing population, reduce urban sprawl, provide a better mix of housing options and promote jobs,” Mr Wynne said.

“The market is responding to high supply levels by offering more variety and we’re seeing more apartments big enough for families.” Mr Wynne said his approval contained conditions including a minimum apartment size of 50 square metres, five per cent of apartments having three or more bedrooms, and heights and setbacks between towers not changing during the final design process. A scathing Maribyrnong council report on the proposal by Golden Asset last year lashed the project as a “mass over-development” that failed to meet a number of planning objectives. The state government last year handed planning control for Footscray’s CBD and

riverside Joseph Road precinct back to the council, but the planning minister retained powers over a handful of key sites, including 4 Hopkins Street, the McNab Avenue redevelopment and the Paint Spot site at 26-34 Buckley Street. The riverside pocket of Footscray containing the site is on its way to being a satellite city holding up to 5000 people. The neighbouring riverside site at 2 Hopkins Street has approval for 751 apartments in four towers ranging from 16 to 28 storeys, while another nearby development will hold 970 apartments in twin 32-storey towers, a 19-storey tower and two 17-storey buildings.

Maribyrnong council flew the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags at the Footscray town hall, while Hobsons Bay’s equivalent event took place at Altona. Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said the week celebrated the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. “The national theme this year is ‘Songlines – the living narrative of our nation’,” Cr Hemphill said. “It highlights the history of Dreamtime and the importance of songlines – the record of travels of ancestral spirits, who ‘sang’ the land into life.” Cr Hemphill said the Hobsons Bay

Newport attack victim ‘hunted’ By Goya Dmytryshchak A Williamstown man was brutally bashed after five men in a stolen car “hunted” him down in Newport on Sunday. The victim, 19, suffered a fractured skull and other injuries requiring surgery after he and three mates were attacked and robbed. Leading Senior Constable Julie-Anne Newman said the victims were walking along Mason Street when they were chased into Laurie Street and assaulted about 1.15am. A woman posted on Facebook that her son was so badly bashed there was a pool of his blood left on the road. “My son had nothing of value on him, which I think may be the reason he was so badly bashed,” she said. “These animals did not leave one bruise or mark on any part of my son’s body – they went at his head.” She said her son couldn’t remember the incident but his friends have said they were walking in Mason Street when a car with “five big blokes” started to “hunt” them down. She said one of her son’s friends handed over his phone, wallet, jacket and shoes as demanded, while a knife or similar sharp object was held to his throat. On Tuesday morning, police attended a service station in High Street, Reservoir, after receiving reports of a suspicious car. They arrested five men in connection with the Newport assault. They also seized a Nissan skyline, believed to have been stolen from Maidstone on Friday. Police said the incident was not related to the Apex gang. No sugar on diabetes’ bitter pill By Goya Dmytryshchak People in their 20s and 30s are now getting so-called ‘maturity onset diabetes’, an Altona North GP will tell a forum in Williamstown on Saturday. Mukesh Haikerwal, chairman of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, will be on an expert panel at Diabetes Victoria’s ‘Living well with diabetes’ forum. In Hobsons Bay, about 5000 people or 5.5 per cent of the population, have diabetes, higher than the national average of 5.3 per cent. In Maribyrnong, the average is 4.6 per cent. Mr Haikerwal said the most people with

diabetes, more than 85 per cent, had the type 2 version. “It used to be called maturity onset diabetes, so as you were getting into your mature years … but now that will be very much in the 20s and 30s,” he said. “People will start getting it because of poor diet, lack of exercise, too much overload of sugar in their diet. “Then that sort of starts a spiral of other chronic diseases. There’re stacks of statistics, and they just get more and more scary. “Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate across Australia, across Victoria,” Mr Haikerwal said. “But around Melbourne, our area is particularly badly affected by it.

“We have a large number of people with multiple illnesses, although they don’t feel unwell, so in many ways they are hidden until they become a crisis. “Often, the first time you find someone with diabetes is when they are extraordinarily ill, often nearly comatose, because the sugar has gone out of control. You’re having to stabilise them with insulin or send them to hospital

because they’re too sick to treat out of the hospital.” Diabetes Victoria chief executive Craig Bennett said diabetes will become Australia’s number one health burden over coming years. “Diabetes increases a person’s risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision and loss of limbs, but a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of these life-threatening complications,” he said. Ms Pfeiffer said the event had been organised with help from the UNHCR and Raffles College of Design and Commerce, where she studied before her move to Footscray. “The UNHCR told me that, whatever happened on the night, it was great for them as an opportunity to promote the issue,” she said. “I get very passionate about it; for me it’s a situation where, as a designer, I can highlight this issue of forced migration. “I’m very much interested in human rights and the human aspect of this global issue.”

The auction of a clothing collection inspired by harrowing journeys made by refugees has raised more than $3000 for charity. Pieces from Footscray designer Iva Pfeiffer’s collection went under the hammer last week, with all proceeds donated to UNHCR, the leading charity supporting refugees. Ms Pfeiffer said each of the garments was inspired by the story of refugees she had met. Ms Pfeiffer, one of just a handful of emerging designers invited to the recent Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia showcase, said the auction in Sydney last week had exceeded all expectations. “It went really well … I was very emotional to see the turnout,” she said. “People were very generous, “I sold a few garments and a lot of people made donations as well.”

As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Hobsons Bay ratepayers whose property values have risen by 14.69 per cent since 2014 will receive a 2.5 per cent rate rise. Those whose property value increased more will receive a higher rate rise and others may receive a discount. The council’s independent revaluation found property values in the past two years rose 27.11 per cent in Altona North, 22.83 in Altona, 22.32 in Brooklyn, 20.67 in Spotswood, 20.52 in South Kingsville, 19.47 in Seaholme, 14.95 in Williamstown, 8.51 in Laverton, 6.49 in Seabrook and 6.15 in Altona Meadows. Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said the

Rates system applied a 2.5 per cent rate rise cap to the total overall rate revenue, but this was not applied evenly to individual ratepayers. “Rates paid by individuals will depend on their new property valuation relative to other properties within their municipality,” he said. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said that with an average rate increase of 6 per cent every year for the past decade, it was clear that a new system had been needed. “Everyone paying rates this year can rest assured their bill won’t be as high as it could have been if we didn’t introduce the Fair Go Rates system,” she said.

Victoria’s top body for councils has criticised the state government for letting property owners think their rates will not rise more than 2.5 per cent. Hobsons Bay council last week adopted its 2016-17 budget, which includes a $34 million capital works spend supported by an average rate rise of 2.5 per cent, but many ratepayers face much higher increases due to a leap in property values under new revaluations. Municipal Association of Victoria president Bill McArthur said the government’s Fair Go

capital works outlay was one of the biggest in recent years despite the 2.5 per cent rate rise cap. Capital works include $11.8 million on roads, trails and footpaths; $2.26 million on drainage; $9 million on open space, carparks and facilities; $2.26 million on machinery and equipment and; $8.7 million on buildings. Building maintenance will include an upgrade to the Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the club made an 11th-hour bid for funding, saying its toilets and change rooms had not been upgraded since the council-owned building was constructed in 1935.

Fighting the stigma struggles that can be faced in tackling mental health. “In different cultures, as well as the general stigma around this, there can be additional stigma and different barriers,” she said. The group has launched a website as a platform for opening up conversations about mental health and is campaigning to change the language around the issue. “That will act as an anchor for our various little projects,” Ms Browne said. One of these projects is a push for a change in terminology from “mental” health or illness to “mind” health or illness. “Even if there are some people who may not agree with the name change, it is creating dialogue,” Ms Browne said. A team of women in Melbourne’s west is tackling the stigma of mental illness. The Mind in the Dark campaign aims to change negative perceptions of mental illness through discussion, education and raising awareness of available support services. Mind in the Dark member Julia Browne said the group’s members met while studying community services at the Vostro Institute of Training in Maidstone and are passionate and culturally diverse western suburbs residents. “We all felt there wasn’t a lot of attention on or understanding of mental illness,” she said. “It affects everybody in some way – nobody is immune. We are not medical experts but we are experts in our own understanding and experience.” Ms Browne said conversations between the women highlighted some of the additional

Stars in southern skies Up-and-coming young athletes have descended on Footscray as the 2016 Southern University Games get under way. More than 1800 students from 15 institutions across Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania are vying for games glory in 18 sports this week, in an event due to inject more than $1.5 million into the local economy. Victoria University is hosting the games for the first time, in conjunction with the university’s 100th anniversary celebrations. Australian University Sport chief executive Don Knapp said VU has strong recreational and elite sport programs, with a number of state and national representatives in their respective sports. Retired Australian netball legend Bianca Chatfield, VU’s Netball Academy head coach

and the games patron, said the event offers more than just a chance for students to display athletic abilities. “It also allows student athletes the opportunity to socialise and build friendships,” she said. Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said the council is proud to be a major partner in the games. “This premiere national sporting event is the perfect complement to the city of Maribyrnong as it showcases the best that this area of Victoria has to offer – both on and off the sports field.” The VU event is one of four regional qualifying competitions for the 2016 Australian University Games in Perth in September. What is your connection to Maribyrnong? My family and I have been living in Maribyrnong for seven years now, but I have been around, back and forth, for more than 30 years. My connection to Maribyrnong started with the Maribyrnong High School and Sporting Academy, with my son attending there for a few years. What do you love most about the area?

I love living in this area for many reasons. It’s near the Maribyrnong River, its link to the past with Melbourne’s Living Museum of the West in Pipemakers Park, and the connection and significance it has to the traditional owners of this land, the Boonwurung and Wurundjeri people. I like the easy access to a large shopping centre, and many cafés and restaurants, the multicultural atmosphere and people who live and work together. What is your favourite local café or eatery? My favourite café is the Happy River Café down at the Footscray Community Arts Centre, and my favorite restaurant is Jimmy Wong’s on Barkly Street. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about my faith and my visual arts practice, giving people opportunities to discover visual arts therapy. I run a weekly Aboriginal arts group down at the Living

SPORT Bulldogs hard work fails to translate It was a bittersweet day for Footscray in the VFL on Saturday. The Bulldogs were delighted with the successful return to action of young defender Roarke Smith from a long-term knee injury. No. 1 draft pick Tom Boyd kicked four goals but remains under a club-imposed suspension from playing AFL after a scuffle with teammate Zaine Cordy. And midfielder Koby Stevens showed his quality with 39 possessions in a comeback from abdominal strain. All good for the Bulldogs – until you look at the scoreboard. The Dogs turned just nine of 28 scoring shots into goals and paid the price with a 12-point loss to Coburg Lions on the road at Piranha Park. The Bulldogs will be looking to bounce back when they host Richmond at the Whitten Oval on Saturday. Williamstown had some conversion woes of its own but still managed a comfortable

28-point win over North Ballarat at Burbank Oval on Sunday. The Seagulls will face Box Hill Hawks in a re-match of last year’s grand final at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday. In WRFL division 1, Altona had a gutsy 16-point win on the road over St Albans to consolidate its hold on fourth spot. Elliot Cavallaro was named best for the Vikings. was in Adelaide on holiday with the family last week and we took our sports-mad son to Adelaide Oval for a look around. It was the day before the Port Adelaide v Richmond game and, apart from the groundsman mowing the field, it was empty. What struck me was the feeling I got sitting in the front row opposite the Bradman and Chappell stands. It didn’t feel like an empty arena and although I’d never been there before, I felt right at home as if the history of the ground was enveloping me. The old scoreboard added to the romantic attachment I felt. I love the MCG and believe it to be one of the most impressive stadiums in the world and a great place to view our two premier sports – football and cricket. But I now understand why so many of my friends make an annual pilgrimage to the Adelaide Test. I’m keen to do it myself now.

got me thinking about our local sporting venues, as vast amounts have been spent at the premier sporting grounds in the west. Whitten Oval and Burbank Oval have been upgraded in recent years and Avalon Airport Oval will get an $11 million facelift at the end of this season. I know Peter Gordon wants to recreate a new high-tech version of the old scoreboard on the hill at Whitten Oval and I hope that happens. Werribee will keep those magnificent trees that line the outer wing and Williamstown has always embraced the picturesque views of the bay as a backdrop to the ground. Footy clubs are full of characters and the grounds must keep their character, too.

Young guns star for CYs By Lance Jenkinson The Williamstown CYMS players can hold their heads up high despite a 29-point loss to Peninsula Old Boys in VAFA premier C at Fearon Reserve on Saturday. The CYs stayed competitive deep into the game, but were eventually broken down by a superior side with premiership ambitions. CYs coach Mathew Montebello told Star Weekly there was no disgrace in going down to a better side. “We know that they’re a top-three side and wanted to make sure we had a fair dinkum crack at them,” he said. “At the moment, they’re just a little bit bigger, a little bit stronger than us. Kelly was a senior assistant coach at CYs in 2014, but worked more in the development side in the past two seasons. “It’s been tough, but like most footy clubs, they [the players] stick together,,” Montebello said. “He’s been a big part of the footy club. The week that it happened, the boys played with their hearts on their sleeve and came out against Oakleigh and gave them a shock. “I was very proud as a coach that day.” Kelly would have been smiling on Saturday as young half-back/wingman Kallan Dawson produced another impressive game. At just 17, Dawson has been a revelation for CYs. “He’s still learning the game, but he’s got star written all over him,” Montebello said. “He’s an outstanding kid and he’s realising it at senior level. “He just tucks the ball under his arm and goes.

“He is so quick and agile and has a huge future ahead of him.” Jack Johnson, the CYs under-19 captain, is another youngster to shine. Johnson has also been part of the development program. “That was the aim – to get kids like Kal and Jack to become senior footballers,” Montebello said. Nic Holdsworth did everything in his powers to give CYs a shot at pulling off an upset. It was to no avail, but did his own standing within the club no harm. “He just works his absolute butt off,” Montebello said. “Rarely does he walk off the field not absolutely wrecked.” Nick Blackney and Aidan Quinn booted three goals apiece for CYs, while Tim Ball added two. The CYs, fifth on the ladder, have a week off before their biggest game of the season so far – against fourth-placed Old Ivanhoe Grammarians at Fearon Reserve on July 16.

Western Region Football League will announce the venues for the senior and junior final series In the next few weeks. One certainty is Whitten Oval as the host for the Division 1 grand final on Saturday, September 10. The 2006 grand final between Hoppers Crossing and Port Melbourne Colts was the last to be played there. Yarraville Seddon and West Footscray played a Maribyrnong Cup match at the home of the Bulldogs last year and the WRFL interleague game was held there earlier this year. The Whitten Oval surface is first class and the way the ground is set up these days it should provide a good atmosphere if a big crowd turns up. I well remember the 2002 Division 2 grand final, when the Hammerheads won in front of about 10,000 people. It was sensational.

Western Jets prodigy is making his own way Western Jets prodigy Daniel Venables comes from impressive football bloodlines. Johnny Lewis, his great grandfather, was a former North Melbourne captain-coach, 10-times Victorian representative, club best-and-fairest and twice leading goalkicker. Fred Robinson, his grandfather, played for North Melbourne and came third in a VFA JJ Liston Trophy count with Brunswick. Peter Venables, his father, moved over from South Australia as a youngster and made it onto the Collingwood under-19 list. And while Daniel Venables is proud of his forefathers, he’s hellbent on making his own way in the game. The 17-year-old from Taylors Lakes left an almighty impression on

Vic Metro at last month’s under-18 national championships . Not only did he walk away a champion after the Big V went through the tournament undefeated, but he collected All Australian honours for a consistent carnival. “I’m just happy that we ended up winning the carnival,” Venables told Star Weekly. “I think we played four games in 17 days, with a trip to Adelaide as well, so it was pretty hectic and full on, but it was an awesome experience. Venables made an impact in every game for Vic Metro. Even when he didn’t rack up a stack of possessions, he found a way to provide meaningful contributions. “I just did the team thing,” he said.

“If you’re not going to have your best game possession-wise, you can always impact the game by being physical, being around the ball and putting pressure on.” The best moment for Venables came in game one. With Vic Metro trailing Vic Country by a kick, the ball was rushed into the forward line where Venables was there to mark. “A lot of people dream when they’re young of kicking a winning goal, and I just felt relaxed, kicked through it and luckily it went through,” he said. It went down to the last game before Vic Metro clinched the title. Metro had to beat WA at Simonds Stadium for the cup and, as with its previous three matches, it was closely fought.

By Lance Jenkinson Laverton Park’s front line did not score a single goal for five weeks in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 5. The Reds had wondered where their next goal would come from, until Saturday, when they put seven goals past Gisborne in a 7-1

mauling at Laverton Park Reserve. “The way we’ve been playing, we didn’t expect this at all,” Reds coach Vince De La Plaza told Star Weekly. “We’ve gone six weeks without a win and actually five weeks without scoring a goal. “We were really struggling, so first thing [this] was good win, then a good result in terms of goal difference for us.”

Cook shoots for the top At an imposing 200 centimetres tall, Jane Cook is one of Australia’s hottest netball shooting prospects. She’s represented Australia at under-19 level and is in the under-20 squad that will play New Zealand and England in August. That’s all despite only turning her full focus to netball this year when she moved to Melbourne. The 18-year-old made the move from Wodonga earlier this year to go to university and to help her take the next step in her netball career. The move to Melbourne seems to be paying off – she has starred in both the Australian and Victorian netball leagues. Her ANL team, Victorian Fury, won its seventh title last week. Cook was the dominant shooter in the grand final against the NSW Waratahs, shooting 46 of her side’s 53 goals.

“I was happy … I had been building on my performances through the season,” she said. At VNL level, her side City West Falcons sits atop the ladder. It’s her second year at the club, after playing in its division 1 premiership side last year. “I could not have asked for a better club,” she said. “I didn’t have the opportunity to train a lot with the team last year, but they still provided me opportunity to get on the court and play. “They are good at understanding you have other commitments.” While focused on her VNL and Australian under-20 commitments, Cook is hoping that there may be bigger things on the horizon in a revamped ANZ Championship that will be an all Australian competition with three new Australian teams. It has been a surprisingly tough initiation for Laverton Park in the bottom tier of the state leagues. If the relegated Reds thought it would swoon its way back to state league 4, they got a rude awakening. It has been a tough season for the Reds and their thrashing of Gisborne only releases the pressure valve slightly.

“None of the games were easy,” Venables said, “but we knew that if we played our best footy we’d always have the legs to run home with it, and we showed that in all four games.” Venables will return to the Jets and his school team PEGS a better player for this experience. “I’ll take a lot of confidence out of representing Vic Metro and being all-Australian,” Venables said. “It’s a pretty proud achievement and something you can hang your hat on.” But in the TAC Cup on Sunday, Western Jets missed their chance to jump into the top eight, losing a close contest to North Ballarat Rebels by 10 points at Stawell. “We’ll move up to fifth,” De La Plaza said. “It’s a bit better to be mid-table than to be down the bottom like we have been. We’re 16 points behind second spot, so it’s a long way. “All we’re thinking about at the moment is to try and get a couple more wins on the board to finish mid-table.” A lack of depth has brought about Laverton Park’s demise this season. The Reds sorely missed Felipe Jara with a succession of injuries. Jara played on Saturday and was one of the Reds’ best, but he is in doubt for the next game after picking up a fresh injury. Perhaps the biggest void left unfilled has been that of Luis Bustos, who is out for the remainder of the year with a knee injury. Bustos is only a teenager, but his impact in the midfield cannot be underestimated. “Since he’s gone down, we’ve just dropped that intensity in the midfield,” De La Plaza said. “Even though he’s a young kid, a boy who stepped up from the under 17s last year, he’s made a big difference to the team.” At least for 90 minutes, Laverton Park’s worries went away as they feasted with seven goals. Javier Sobarzo was the star of the show with a hat-trick, while Mayani Isdore scored a double. De La Plaza hopes it will be a turning point in Laverton Park’s season. “It gives us a lot of confidence,” he said. “We pretty much had a full squad to pick from this week, whereas the last six weeks we’ve struggled to get numbers on the park. “We know we can score again. “We thought we weren’t going to be able to score for the rest of the season the way we were going!” In state league 4, Altona North had an upset 3-2 win over Newmarket Phoenix in a thriller at Debneys Park. David Dennerley scored the winner for North late on, following goals to Patrick Barba and James Conversano. In state league 1, Altona Magic’s clash with Diamond Valley United was postponed for a second time due to an unsatisfactory pitch at Partingtons Flat.
