Honour for bravery By Goya Dmytryshchak Newport train driver Paul Ewert remembers every detail of the day he dragged a workmate from a burning car moments before it exploded. Last week, his actions were honoured with a silver medal in the bravery awards of The Royal Humane Society of Australasia. Three years ago, on October 26, Mr Ewert had been getting a lift back to Melbourne with two colleagues. Alan Cogger was driving and Joel Pring was in the back seat. They were at Invergordon in northern Victoria when a truck struck their car head on. “We drove a train to Tocumwal, which we were meant to bring back the next day,” Mr Ewert said. “While we were at Tocumwal, they told us that the train wasn’t running … due to insufficient loading so they were going to send a person to pick us up and drive us back to Melbourne in a car.

But the door wouldn’t budge. “I hopped around to the other side, tried to get that open and it wasn’t any good,” Mr Ewert said. “Fortunately, the back windscreen, the back window was broken. “We ended up managing to get Joel sort of

half conscious, slapping and yelling at him, and he finally got it together – he just sort of stuck his whole body through the back window of the car and this other bloke, Drew, and myself, managed to drag him and get him off the road. “Then people helped me get off the road. “And the next thing, the car’s well and truly

gone.” Mr Ewert was among seven Victorians awarded for bravery. Mr Black was awarded the Clarke Silver Medal for most outstanding act of bravery for the year and will receive his award from the Governor-General at a separate ceremony.

“When we had the accident, a truck came across onto the wrong side of the road and cleaned us up head on.” The next thing Mr Ewert recalls is someone helping him. “As soon as the car actually stopped, my door had popped open slightly and I dived out onto the ground and the next thing someone’s picking me up,” Mr Ewert said. “I said, ’Who are you?’ Andrew ‘Drew’ Black had been driving in the car behind and had swerved down an embankment to avoid the collision. “He was … in the car behind us and he’d seen what was about to happen and headed off into the bush to get out of the way … well, the truck hit us back into his car as well and he was there all ready to pick me up,” Mr Ewert said. “Once he picked me up, he said, ‘We’ve got to get everybody out of the car ’cause the car’s on fire’. “I looked back in … and I could see that the driver was dead – he had a gash on his forehead and it wasn’t bleeding. “I looked into the back seat and my other mate, Joel, was sort of writhing unconscious in the back seat. “My leg was pushed back through my pelvis so I was hopping, I tried to get the door open.”

Four bin recycling starts soon By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay’s new four-bin recycling service is scheduled to start on February 1. The new service will have weekly food organics and garden organics (FOGO) collection, fortnightly garbage and recycling collections, and monthly glass collection. Hobsons Bay council last week announced new FOGO and glass bins would be delivered to all households currently paying for the council’s waste service prior to February 1. “A new 120 litre FOGO bin will also

replace households that currently have a privately-owned garden waste bin (approximately 5000 properties),” a council report states. No additional waste service charges are proposed for the 2019-20 financial year. “This results in equitable outcomes that do not penalise or charge twice those who are already paying for a garden waste service,” the report states. A detailed review of the council’s waste service and charge policy is now being undertaken to set service charges from July

1, 2020. Kerbside recycling changes were prompted by the council’s former contracted recycler, SKM Recycling, being declared insolvent by the Supreme Court in August. Since SKM’s collapse, the council’s recycling costs have risen about $1.2 million to $8 million per year. The new service incorporating glass and FOGO is expected to cost $8.1 million annually and $4 million as an initial one-off cost. The council last week announced it had signed new contracts with O-I Glass, Alex Fraser Group, Australian Paper Recovery,

Veolia, Mastec, Code for Australia and Cleanaway. Standard bin sizes will be 120 litres for garbage, 240 litres for recycling, 120 litres for glass, and either 120 or 240 litres for FOGO. For multi-unit developments and apartment blocks, the council is still finalising options this month but is likely to include larger shared bins. The cost to such properties is yet to be determined and may include direct charges to owners corporations (formerly known as body corporates).

Hobsons Bay council staff are implementing work bans over summer which include not removing seaweed or fallen branches except where public health is threatened, as a union dispute deepens. There are also indefinite bans on completing mowing jobs in sporting fields and other open spaces, refilling dog-bag dispensers, processing court documents for new fines, issuing planning infringement notices, cleaning minor plant and equipment or refuelling vehicles after 1pm. Australian Services Union members last week said the council had threatened to lock out workers for taking protected industrial action in “an almost unprecedented move by a Victorian council”. “The Australian Services Union negotiates enterprise agreements with every single local council in Victoria and the only one who threatens to lock out workers is Hobsons Bay,” branch secretary Lisa Darmanin said. “CEO Aaron van Egmond has been unwilling to directly negotiate with staff and their union, but he is willing to threaten the livelihoods of hundreds of workers and their families just weeks before Christmas.” Mr Van Egmond said for the majority of the year, management had been working closely with staff and union representatives to renew the council’s enterprise agreement. “Unfortunately, our discussions with union representatives has resulted in an impasse where negotiations have now stalled,” he said. Countdown to carols Christmas is in the air throughout the inner-west, with plenty of carols to help celebrate the countdown. Carols in West Footscray returns to Johnson Reserve this Saturday, led by talented local choir groups and bands. Organised by the West Footscray Traders, the day kicks of at 2pm, carols will strike up at 6pm and fireworks will launch about 9.30pm. Expect a visit by Santa and his hard-working elves, Mrs Claus and Frosty the Snowman. Review call for DNA case By Benjamin Millar Fresh DNA testing of a married couple accused of being siblings has torpedoed the Australian government’s grounds for refusing to allow the pair to reunite, sparking calls for their case to be urgently reopened. The Department of Home Affairs is being urged to reverse the 2014 decision to refuse a visa for the Ethiopian wife of West Footscray man Daniel Tadese on the grounds she may also be his half sister, following new evidence backing the pair’s insistence they are not biologically related. Star Weekly last year reported Australian citizen Daniel Tadese, 49, has been separated from his wife Genet Abebe and five-year-old son Natneal since the then Department of Immigration demanded the couple undergo DNA testing while Ms Abebe was pregnant with Natnael. Although Natnael was granted Australian citizenship by descent, Ms Abebe’s visa application was struck out on the grounds the DNA results allegedly constituted ‘moderately strong’ evidence she and her husband share the same mother. Fresh DNA testing of the family backs the parents’ claim they are unrelated. Analysis by Dr Andrew Veale, a leading genetic scientist specialising in relatedness, confirms they are both Natneal’s parents but share no biological family history. Dr Veale, a senior lecturer at Auckland’s Unitec Institute of Technology, said the original DNA testing was poorly handled, outdated and deeply flawed. “The data used in the DNA test used to reject the visa was from microsatellites, an outdated method superseded by Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP),” he said. “Updated SNP genotyping data for Daniel,

the years of distress and heartache caused by their flawed analyses,” he said. A spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs said there is no provision for the department to reopen or reverse the decision on an application which has been finally determined. “Where an application has been refused, it is open to the applicant and sponsor to lodge a new application.”

Rubbish crackdown A Hobsons Bay councillor has called for an enforcement blitz on litterers after Altona’s foreshore was left in a “disgusting“ state last week. Altona Village Traders Association recently posted photos of trashed beach boxes, rubbish-strewn parks and picnic tables, alcohol containers and other litter lining the seawall and beach, and even a smashed street library box. “This is gut wrenching to see,” the association wrote. “We are contacting council today to see how we can tackle this problem. “It should not be accepted and there should be really severe consequences.” Cr Tony Briffa raised the issue at last week’s council meeting. “I’ve received many emails, particularly in the last 12 or 24 hours, in relation to the state of the foreshore and reserves along the foreshore, particularly after yesterday’s hot weather and the place was basically left a mess,” Cr Briffa said. “There was empty alcohol bottles all over the place, rubbish etcetera, and the Altona Village Traders Association and the community in general are really upset with the way that the local community or the local area is being treated. “Is it possible, maybe, to have a blitz there with local laws when it comes to littering or maybe even to convene a meeting with the ward councillors … to see what we can do to address those issues.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Anger over childcare fee rise By Benjamin Millar Parents at a West Footscray childcare centre say they are furious to have been hit with a fee increase of almost 20 per cent without warning. Church Street Children’s Centre – the subject of a long-running redevelopment saga that has had families in limbo for more than three years – is due to reopen its doors at its former site from January next year. But parents using the service say they were given no prior warning they would be facing a $19 daily fee increase to $122 per day.

The increase equates to almost $200 per week for parents with two children enrolled daily at the centre, or close to $10,000 across the year before subsidies. Parent Angela Wickson said the fee hike was only discovered after parents had submitted their enrolment preferences for 2020, making it too late to consider switching to other centres or care arrangements. “I know at least three families who increased their days not knowing about the increase and there is no way they can do enough extra work to cover that,” she said.

“It’s a case of poor engagement with the Church Street families that have already been through so much.” Ms Wickson said the situation was exacerbated by Maribyrnong council charging service provider Early Childhood Management Services (ECMS) more than $160,000 per year to lease the new centre. ECMS chief executive Kim Bertini said the fees charged for the service while it was at the Maribyrnong Community Centre in Randall Street, where only a peppercorn fee was paid for the lease, cannot be compared with the

newly built centre. “It would not have been sustainable for the new centre to base its fees on Randall Street,” she said. “We appreciate it has raised concerns for families and want to assure that we have not reset the fees disproportionately without substantial reasons.” Maribyrnong council community services director Clem Gillings said the new fee structure recognised the new centre is a modern facility and falls within the average for long day care costs across Melbourne.

Community pays tribute Outgoing chairman of the Hobson Bay Commmunity Fund, Williamstown’s Hayden Raysmith, was last week honoured by the council for his legacy. Since its inception in 2006, the philanthropic fund grew its corpus from $40,000 to $1 million, from which interest is used to fund small grants for grass roots community organisations. Another legacy of the fund is the development of a guide to inclusion in sport for people with disabilities. Sports for Everyone: A guide to 360o Inclusion for Young People in Sport is a “living document” developed with The University of Melbourne and local sporting groups. Mr Raysmith was presented with a certificate of recognition for his significant contribution and leadership at last week’s Hobsons Bay council meeting. Addressing the meeting, Mr Raysmith said the council’s “unbroken level of support” had

been fundamental to the fund’s success and was a model for other municipalities and communities. “But I would particularly like to stress how important this fund is going to be for this community,” he said. “It provides an avenue, firstly, for people who want to put something back in to the community. “It provides, also, a vehicle for businesses who operate in this community and their employees to be able to give to a fund that can allocate resources in a very purposeful and meaningful way.” Mr Raysmith said the corpus was not used and continued to grow, with 100 per cent of every donation going back to the community. “The other thing is, this fund is in perpetuity,” he said. “This fund will grow and grow.” Hayden Raysmith receives a certificate of recognition from Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates.

Arrests over abalone catch

By Benjamin Millar Footscray’s status as one of Victoria’s most important growth hubs has been cemented with the state government naming the booming suburb one of its six ‘priority precincts’. Priority Precincts Minister Gavin Jennings visited Footscray on Thursday to announce the suburb will join Sunshine, Fishermans Bend, Arden, Parkville and Richmond to Docklands as the six areas earmarked for extra strategic assistance in co-ordinating major infrastructure, commercial and population growth. Footscray has been identified as the ‘cultural heart of Melbourne’s west’ and a target for growth in healthcare, education and social industries. The Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions will now lead planning and development in the area with a view to boosting investment and providing more jobs. Mr Jennings said Footscray has been endorsed due to its strategic importance not only to the west, but to Victoria. “Many people who live here know this is a great place to live; we’ve seen waves of migration come and call Footscray their home and that will be the case in the future,” he said. “When they call this place their home we want to make sure they have the best health facilities, the best education and learning opportunities, the best amenity, the best transport connections.” Mr Jennings said Footscray has a number of important community assets such as Whitten Oval and Footscray Park, as well as a number of new projects in the pipeline including the $1.5 billion new Footscray Hospital and the opening of the Metro tunnel. “These are the things we want to bring

together in a co-ordinated, seamless way to allow for the growth to occur,” he said. “We will see a combination of investment in education, health, commercial opportunities and importantly supported housing options for the local community.” Mr Jennings said residents will be encouraged to provide input on decisions such as the future of the current

hospital site once the new hospital is built. Footscray MP Katie Hall said the priority precinct status will ensure the local community and businesses are at the heart of planning decisions and infrastructure investments. “Footscray will have all of the best and brightest minds in the strategic planning sense focusing on the … inner-west,” she said.

Two Sunshine West men have been arrested for allegedly possessing more than 230 abalone at Altona beach. Fisheries officers watched the pair diving for about two hours on December 7 before pouncing. Victorian Fisheries Authority education and enforcement director Ian Parks said the men were allegedly caught with 232 abalone of which 173 were markedly undersized. “The daily bag limit for abalone is five per person,” Mr Parks said. “On Saturday afternoon, Fisheries officers observed two males arriving at the reef area of Altona beach with dive equipment. “Fisheries officers maintained covert surveillance on the area for around two hours, later arresting the males just before they left in a vehicle that had been circling the area.” Mr Parks said the two were facing serious charges. “The offenders are expected to be charged on summons with numerous fisheries offences including take and possess a commercial quantity of abalone of which the penalty is up to five years imprisonment,” he said. “Fisheries officers did return the abalone to Port Phillip Bay but unfortunately most were dead when placed back into the water.” Report illegal fishing anonymously at 13FISH (13 3474) 24 hours. Farewell to an icon By Benjamin Millar Footscray institution Jim Wong Restaurant will be closing its doors for the final time this Sunday, bringing to a close a chapter of inner-west history lasting almost 60 years. Maryanne Wong has been running the restaurant bearing her beloved husband’s name since he died in 2016 from head injuries sustained in a fall at the iconic Barkly Street restaurant. Mrs Wong vowed to keep the restaurant running for two or three years as a legacy to the cherished Footscray restaurateur, renowned across Melbourne for his kindness and his popular dim sims. Mr Wong hailed from Canton, China, arriving in Melbourne at the age of 13 and learning his craft from an uncle. His restaurant was a well-known haunt of sports stars, particularly his beloved Western Bulldogs. Mrs Wong, a familiar face at the restaurant during the 53 years of the couple’s marriage, has decided it is time for the next chapter in her life. “I’m looking forward to retiring, but at the same time I’m really sad knowing I won’t be seeing as much of all these people,” she said of the restaurant’s loyal customers. “They are still coming after all these years and bringing their children and grandchildren.” Mrs Wong said it had been a privilege watching so many people grow up from their own childhood to now have families of their own come to eat. She said the food has always been the main attraction. She also has welcome news for fans of the famous Jimmy Wong dim sims – two of her sons will continue their production in the new year. Bus service to replace overpass By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has demanded buses for residents affected by the closure of two pedestrian overpasses over the West Gate freeway due to tunnel works. The overpasses at Muir Street in Spotswood and Rosala Avenue in Altona North will be closed from this month, stopping people from being able to cross the West Gate Freeway. Council urges action on Stony By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council is urging a committee tasked with improving the west’s waterways to pressure the state government to do more to clean up Stony Creek, still heavily contaminated by last year’s toxic Tottenham fire. The state government established a Waterways of the West (WoW) committee in August 2018 with a view to improving management of waterways in Melbourne’s west, including the Maribyrnong River,

Moonee Ponds Creek and other rivers, creeks and wetlands such as Stony Creek and Kororoit Creek. A ‘discussion paper’ by the group lists a number of priorities including protecting water quality and waterway health, providing water for the environment and enhancing and activating waterways as open space. It suggests improving the resilience of coastal wetlands and estuaries, integrating land and water planning and management, and embedding traditional owners and their

values and culture in waterway planning and management. Maribyrnong council’s submission to the paper, released last week, calls for further clarification around roles and responsibilities, as well as additional funding and support to improve water quality and stormwater treatment. The council generally supports the plan, but has raised concerns around resourcing and funding strain on the council. It is repeating its calls for the development of planning controls along each section of the

waterways, similar to those developed for the Yarra River, and also wants the committee to ramp up pressure on the state government to clean up Stony Creek. “The 2018 Tottenham fire has had a devastating impact on Stony Creek,” the submission states. “Land use practices on industrial sites within Brimbank, Hobson’s Bay and Maribyrnong on Stony Creek and the lower Maribyrnong River require increased funding for inspection, enforcement and remediation.”

A taste of Christmas Williamstown’s Holy Trinity Anglican Church last Friday brought festive joy to about 80 people who attended its annual Christmas lunch. Diners enjoyed a barbecue, salads and dessert, while on Monday about 100 people who had registered were sent a Christmas hamper. The church’s twice-weekly lunch program operates alongside Anglicare’s emergency relief program, which provides groceries, fresh vegetables and vouchers to those in need. Lunches are prepared and served by volunteers who regularly make soup and sandwiches for about 50 people. “Every week you make it possible for my family to eat of the weekend,” regular client Sandy told volunteers. Neil, a Williamstown resident for 17 years, said he came to the church for the social aspect as well as to eat. “Here, there is always someone with a smile,

a welcome and encouragement when you come through the door.” Another client, Debby, said the program had helped her through a crisis in her life. “The quality of the food is wonderful and to be able to take away fresh food for a week is amazing,” she said. “The community lunch program is an important part of the ministry of Holy Trinity,” Reverend Dr Ronald Noone said. “It shows Christianity in action by loving God and our neighbours just as Christ did.” Holy Trinity’s community lunch program, running since the 1990s, operates Mondays and Fridays from 10am-1pm from mid January to mid December. Perseverance pays dividends By Benjamin Millar When Harry Nguyen woke up at 6.55am last Thursday, he took the time to brush his teeth. Next, the Footscray City College year 12 student opened his email. “I checked my email and bam, I was just stunned.” Harry discovered he had been awarded an ATAR score of 99.9, including a perfect score of 50 for English and an Additional Language. “I was thinking ‘no way’; the night before I was thinking maybe I hadn’t done that well and I was prepared for that, but it went beyond my wildest expectations.” The Maidstone student’s result was Footscray City College’s highest ever ATAR score, a perfect way to cap off the school’s final stand-alone year before it becomes absorbed into the multi-campus Footscray High School from 2020. Footscray City College has recorded strong growth in ATAR results over the past decade, climbing from an average of 54 in 2009 to 67 in 2019. From next year the school will be the senior campus of the Footscray High School, catering for students from years 10 to 12. By that stage Harry Nguyen will be off to university. His ATAR of 99.9 opens the door to any degree at any institution he wishes, with a strong chance he will be following his passion for civil engineering. “I’ve always been fascinated with the public transport system and all the things operating in the network depend on civil engineering,” he said. In the shorter term, Harry intended to celebrate his result by treating himself to a buffet dinner. His advice for students tackling their VCE is

simply applying themselves and persevering. “It’s not about intelligence, it’s more about determination and perseverance,” he said. “My family has been very supportive and my school as well. It was a really positive vibe speaking with my friends, they are all quite

happy with their results.” School principal Angelique den Brinker said she was pleased with the excellent overall results. “It’s a wonderful example of someone who has come from another country and who will

SPORT WRFL locks in fixtures for the 2020 season The Western Region Football League’s 90th season will get underway on April 4, with the top two divisions kicking off the action. Division 1 and 2 will get underway on the first weekend in April, while the division 3 season will start on April 18, after the Easter break. The top division will remain a 10 team competition, with division 2 premier Yarraville Seddon Eagles replacing Albion, who was relegated. The Eagles’ return to the top flight will start with an away match against Point Cook. They will unveil their premiership flag the following round against Spotswood. Seven-time reigning premiers Deer Park will get to unveil its premiership flag in round one when it faces Caroline Springs at home. Hoppers Crossing will host Sunshine, Altona will play St Albans and Spotswood faces Werribee Districts in other first-round matches. The teams will then have a break the

following week for Easter. Each team will play each other twice, in an 18 round season. All teams will play on Anzac Day, which this year falls on a Saturday. The first grand final rematch between the Lions and Altona will be held in round eight, with the two teams to face each other again in round 17. Local rivals Altona and Spotswood play each other for the first time on Anzac Day, while the Wyndham derby between Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Districts also falls on that day. The grand final will be held on September 19. The top two divisions will have competition-wide byes on the Queen’s Birthday weekend and July 25. Division 2 will again be an eight team competition, with Albion dropping down into the division after being relegated, while Glen Orden has been promoted after winning the division 3 premiership. Like division 1, it will start on April 4, before a break for Easter. It will be an 18 week season,

with the grand final scheduled for the weekend of September 12. Parkside hosts Wyndamvale in round one, with Glen Orden to unveil its premiership flag as its hosts Newport. Point Cook Centrals host West Footscray and Albion plays North Footscray in the other opening round matches. The division 3 competition has a later start, but will have 19 rounds, to ensure every team plays an equal amount of games, with three byes each. It will be a seven team competition, with Manor Lakes, which withdrew from division 2 midway through the season, unable to get a team back up and running and no team relegated. In the opening round, Wyndham Suns face North Sunshine, Tarneit hosts Braybrook, while Sunshine Heights plays Albanvale. Laverton has a bye in round one. The junior competition will start on April 5. Crusaders in triple treat

By Tara Murray New Altona Gators coach Lanard Copeland wasn’t planning on taking on a coaching role in next year’s Big V competition. Returning to Melbourne after several years in Sydney where he was assistant coach to Andrew Gaze at the Sydney Kings, Copeland was looking to take a season off. But his friend and Gators youth league coach Sedale Threatt Jnr got in touch. “Sedale said we can use you out here,” Copeland said. “I said maybe next season, but he kept hounding me to come out. “Randy Shanklin is in charge out there, and I got a call from him. I came out to visit and I decided to help out a little bit. “They are doing some good things out there, I’m excited.” Copeland will take on the head coaching role of the men’s side, replacing Des Radoslovic. Copeland isn’t new to the Big V competition, he coached the Hume City Broncos and Sunbury Jets before heading to Sydney. He said he loved his time with the Kings and was proud of what he achieved alongside his great mate Gaze. Now Copeland is in for a challenge at the Gators as he tries to get them to climb up the ladder. The Gators finished second bottom with six wins this year. They will have a very different line-up from last season. Jordan Lino and Joseph Mausar are both returning and Samson Rocker is coming up from the youth league side. Copeland was the roster wasn’t finalised but he is excited but the signings so far. “I’ve picked up a couple of guys that I’ve coached before,” he said. “The level of experience we’ve brought in will help take us further than we went last season. “There’s a lot of new players that seem enthusiastic to get the men’s program turned around.” Jacob Formosa, who has represented Malta, headlines the signings for the Gators as he returns to his home club. He played under Copeland in his one season at the Sunbury Jets. “He started at Altona and his father coaches alongside Sedale in the youth league,” Copeland said. “He was at Werribee last year and has played overseas and then come back. “We’ve got a couple of other guys, Darcy Daniels, who is Andrew Gaze’s nephew and is an exciting wingman.

game,” he said. “I’ll leave the yelling to training and I want them to try and take over some of the running on game day.” Copeland has also got involved in other ways at the association. He is helping Shanklin run a morning domestic academy and they are hosting a holiday clinic in January.

Western Crusaders’ remarkable run has continued, with the side completing a perfect season for the third year to claim the Gridiron Victoria men’s Vic Bowl. Red hot favourites for the grand final against the Monash Warriors, the Crusaders got the job done, winning 36-6. Crusaders coach Craig Wilson said they had a pretty special bunch of players at the club. “We went undefeated for a third season in a row, that’s 40 games in a row undefeated,” he said. “Some guys leave and new guys come in and have picked up where others have left off. “The culture is stronger each year and they have found the secret recipe.” One key for the Crusaders has been to block out the noise of teams wanting to beat them and focusing on what they can do. Come the grand final, Wilson admitted there had been some nerves. “It was quite an experience and quite a responsibility not to muck it up,” he said. “Everyone was focused on doing their job as good as they can and letting the game come to them. “The cream rises to the top.” Running back Rohail Akhtar broke open the game with a 60 yard run to put the first score on the board and it released the pressure on the Crusaders. They were in control at half-time, but the game was far from over. “The Warriors … were really strong in the third quarter,” Wilson said. “They were the first team to score, but took 10 minutes to do it. “They ran out the time. The second half was a bit tougher than the first.” American quarterback Ryan Deal was a well deserving best on ground. The Crusaders may have just won a third straight title, but they are already looking to the next one. “We’re really keen to make it four in a row,” Wilson said. “We don’t know if we will go through undefeated. Williamstown stacks up By Tara Murray Williamstown is bringing in some fresh blood as it looks toward the next Victorian Football League season. This yearâ€™s grand finalist has lost a number of its core group who have decided to call time on their VFL careers. The departures of Sam Dunell, Nick Meese, Leigh Masters, Willie Wheeler, Oliver Tate and Ben Kennedy leave big holes in the line-up. With that in mind, Seagulls coach Andy Collins said it was important to bring some more experience into the group. â€œWeâ€™ve lost some really good players, but itâ€™s an opportunity to recruit some good players,â€? he said. â€œWeâ€™ve got some really strong leaders coming in, some with VFL experience and others with AFL experience. â€œWeâ€™re not finished yet, hopefully weâ€™ll have a couple more good signings.â€? The Seagullsâ€™ biggest-name recruit so far is former Collingwood player Sam Murray. Murray played 13 games for the Magpies before missing this year through a drug suspension. His brother Nick Murray has also joined the Seagulls. â€œSam is a terrific young man who made a terrible mistake,â€? Collins said. â€œHeâ€™s a strong leader and a really good player. â€œHis brother is a different type of player, a lot taller, and brings a lot to the table. They wanted the opportunity to possibly play with each other.â€? Former Geelong VFL captain and best and

fairest winner James Tsitas has finally made the move to the Seagulls. Collins, who has tried to recruit Tsitas for a number of years, said he was excited to get him. â€œThere was a bunch of players in 2014 who didnâ€™t get drafted and ranked incredibly high. Michael Gibbons, Ben Cavarra, Jake Greiser and Brett Bewley and he [Tsitas] is arguably the best of the lot. â€œIâ€™m really excited to get him, not only as a player, but as a leader.â€? Frankston vice-captain Corey Rich will add some goalkicking strength. Luke Meadows joins his good mate Nick Rodda at the Seagulls. Meadows starred in his first year in the VFL at Box Hill, having made the move across from Perth. Tristian Davies is returning to Williamstown after completing his studies. Former Adelaide-listed ruckman Paul Hunter will step into the shoes left vacant by Nick Meese. Collins said a number of clubs were after Hunter, but a connection between Collins and Jonathan Beech, Hunterâ€™s former Adeladie teammate, got them across the line. Thomas Edwards Baldwin headlines the younger group of players that have joined the Seagulls. â€œHe, played in the WAFL grand final this year and is only 20 years old and is one of the best emerging talents in the game,â€? Collins said. NAB League stars Charlie Dean, Lachie Stapleton, Mitch Mellis and Daly Andrews have also signed with the Seagulls.
