Neighbours on watch Altona Meadows residents fed up with crime are starting to map out hotspots in their suburb and conduct night patrols to deter criminals. Spearheaded by Marlo Jueco, the initiative has been taken up by residents who have sent him details and locations of crimes they have experienced to help identify where patrols are most needed. Mr Jueco said he was moved to act after his partner’s parked car was written off by a speeding unregistered car and out of concern that she could come to harm after he heard about other crimes in the area. “A lot of people agreed with me and people who were affected started patrolling their own areas,” he said. Mr Jueco said that after mapping crimes, he had noticed many were occurring close to main roads. “It’s not within the centre of Altona Meadows, so I suppose it leads me to believe that it could be outsiders that are just opportunistic, coming in, doing their damage and then driving off,” he said. “Break-ins have happened … a lot of vandalism and property damage. “In Merton Street, from the roundabout on Victoria Street down to the tennis courts, multiple cars out the front were vandalised with spray paint, and same with the house fronts plus a couple of broken windows.” Mr Jueco is patrolling his own block, bounded by Balaclava Avenue, Victoria Street, Trafalgar Avenue and Merton Street. But he says he’s not a vigilante. “I’m not out there to do this for any other reason than just to contribute to my own community. I know there are a lot of elderly people here who can’t do much about this kind of stuff. “If nothing’s done about it, it’s just going to get worse. “I know a couple of people have contacted the police and told them about vandalism and speeding around here, and there’s been no extra patrols whatsoever. “Unfortunately, it’s going to take one of us to risk ourselves to get noticed.” Hobsons Bay police’s Inspector Michelle Young said residents taking the law into their own hands was of great concern. “I haven’t heard of this, but it would be most concerning as this gentleman would be working outside of any legislation and may actually be putting himself and/or others at risk,” she said.

Cresser Reserve

There is good news as we have awarded the contract for the Altona North Library café to a social enterprise. UR Community plan to incorporate a youth and volunteer development model for their staff. The organisation is also keen to tap into the local Altona North community to see what work opportunities it can provide.

A temporary pathway has been constructed at Cresser Reserve while the rock revetment and beach access works take place. The path has created confusion in the community with some users concerned that this path is the final alignment. Onsite signage has been made clearer and users, including bicycle user groups, have been consulted and are happy with the planned final alignment. Work on the seawall itself, between Queen Street and Millers Road will now include a handrail to accommodate for the differing heights in the wall. The project is expected to be completed by the end of June.

Langshaws Reserve We are renewing the cricket nets at Langshaws Reserve, Altona North, relocating them to a more suitable position within the reserve. Works will be finished this month. The cricket net renewal also coincides with a refurbishment of the existing pavilion.

Special Council Meeting A Special Council Meeting will be held

on Tuesday 7 June 2016, commencing at 5.30pm at the Council Chamber, Hobsons Bay Civic Centre, 115 Civic Parade, Altona to consider the Councillor Code of Conduct. This meeting is open to the public.

Accessible Beaches Trial Council’s Accessible Beaches three month trial finished on a high with the beach wheelchair and matting being made available across the four day Easter long weekend. Over the 17 week trial period, the beach wheelchair has given 16 individual users and their families access to Altona beach.

The Newport Youth Library and Seniors (NYLS) centre is not far away from completion with the building weatherproofed and fully secure by the end of this month. Current works include the installation of PA and AV speakers, air conditioning units and painting. Works at the Mechanics Hall are ongoing, with activities such as electrical work, plumbing and ceiling work all being carried out. A decision on the centre’s name is expected to be made at a Council meeting soon and all is on track for a September opening.

The works will also address safety concerns at the reserve, including hoon behaviour, and will focus on improving pedestrian and cyclist access to the reserve through the installation of new paths, fencing and gates which will restrict car access. Final touches will include tree planting, irrigation and a redefined car park. Representatives from sporting clubs and community members have worked with Council closely to form the master plan for the reserve. Detention site to be sold

By Benjamin Millar As the Western Bulldogs enjoy a cracking start to the season, one fan is soaking it up more than most. Western Bulldogs cheer squad member Clive Mitchell celebrated his 88th birthday watching his beloved Bulldogs see off Melbourne on Sunday. Mr Mitchell, a Bulldogs member for more than 80 years, can be found front and centre of the cheer squad at every game. He grew up with the Dogs in Footscray but moved with his family to Corio to take up a job at Shell. Red, white and blue still pulse through his veins and he travels to every home game to support the club he joined as a member in 1933 at the tender age of five. Mr Mitchell joined the cheer squad in 1958, lending his voice to the roar from the wing at Whitten Oval. His all-time favourite Dogs are Tony Liberatore, Doug Hawkins and 1950s star Herb Henderson, the Bulldogs’ fullback of the century. “The best thing about being a Bulldog is they keep you guessing! But once you’re a Bulldog, you’re always a Bulldog,” Mr Mitchell says. His current favourite Bulldog is injured captain Bob Murphy. “I hope he will play on next year.” Mr Mitchell was there to cheer on the Dogs as they took out the 1954 grand final against Melbourne by 51 points, the club’s first and still only premiership. Naturally, the match remains his favourite, but he also remembers fondly a 1978 fixture against St Kilda in which full-forward Kelvin Templeton kicked 15 goals and nine behinds on his way to becoming the first Bulldog to

kick more than 100 goals in a season. Another favourite moment was when club legend Ted Whitten handed Doug Hawkins the ball as he broke Whitten’s long-standing club record of 321 games. The Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre will be closed within two years and the land sold for development, bringing an end to the controversial centre’s troubled life. Federal Immigration Minister Peter Dutton announced that the centre, on Hampstead Road in Maidstone, would be closed as would Sydney’s Villawood Immigration Detention Centre and the Perth Immigration Residential Housing Facility. A spokesman for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection said the closures would be staged over 24 months as infrastructure is upgraded across remaining centres such as the Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation centre in Broadmeadows. There were 1679 people in Australian immigration detention centres as of March 31. They included 108 men and 16 women at Maribyrnong. The site, which originally opened in 1966 as the Maribyrnong Migrant Hostel, is next to the former Victoria University student village, which is also likely to be sold for residential development. The Maribyrnong centre has attracted attention over its handling of violence against refugees by former prisoners awaiting deportation. Drug use is reportedly rife and raids on the centre have uncovered illegal drugs, ice pipes and even a suspected ice laboratory.

Council backs west toll road Maribyrnong council has thrown its support behind the proposed $5.5 billion Western Distributor toll road, provided that parkland in Yarraville is spared and a blanket ban is imposed on trucks on local roads. A council officer’s report to Tuesday night’s meeting stated the Western Distributor could “relieve significant ongoing issues with freight on residential arterial roads in the inner west”. The council meeting followed a City of Melbourne report claiming the project was “a significant opportunity cost” with potential negative impact on land uses and traffic closer to the city. The Maribyrnong report noted key concerns with design options including the built form, potential impact on open space and recreation, impacts on residential amenity during and after construction, and increased traffic due to drivers avoiding tolls. The report backed the “long tunnel option” connecting the Western Distributor to the West Gate Freeway via a southern portal at the freeway. It also called for “Option 5”, connecting the freeway to Hyde Street via Hall Street and Simcock Avenue in Spotswood, a move likely to be resisted in Hobsons Bay due to its impact on sports grounds. Additional works and measures “required as a minimum” included truck bans on Yarraville’s Francis Street and Somerville Road and Footscray’s Buckley and Moore streets, extra noise barriers on the West Gate Freeway, and completion of the Federation Trail as a

continuous off-road shared path. The council also warned rat running would increase unless a number of steps were taken such as ensuring the Hyde Street ramps were used only by dangerous goods and local trucks. The report noted that failing to ban trucks on Buckley and Moore streets would “relocate and intensify issues”, eroding the potential benefits of the project.

The report echoed concerns about a new bridge crossing the Maribyrnong River, as reported by Star Weekly earlier this month, noting it would impact on the appeal of the river environment and harm longer-term chances to extend public access to the river from Lyons Street to Francis Street. Greens MP Colleen Hartland said banning container trucks on local streets and keeping parklands was essential for the project to gain community support. “While the council supports the road in principle, if truck bans and parkland protection are not part of the final design, I hope they will take a harder line for the community’s sake,” she said. “The problem with building more roads is that it encourages more people to drive, and driving is a far less efficient and clean way of moving people into the city, as the Melbourne report shows.”

All froth and bubble A revolution is brewing in Melbourne’s west. As appreciation for micro-brewed craft beer skyrockets, small-scale breweries and brewing teams are popping up right across the west. Two Birds Brewing led the way in Spotswood but now flying the flag for Footscray are gypsy brewers West City Brewing and the soon-to-be-unveiled Hop Nation brewery. Hop Nation brewers Sam Hambour and Duncan Gibson have been beavering away to build their brewery in a riverside warehouse. Mr Hambour says they began as home brewers while working in the wine industry, but were keen to concentrate more fully on beer. “We decided in 2014 to start Hop Nation and have slowly evolved as gypsy brewers,” he said. “Footscray is an up-and-coming area and we

found this great warehouse from the 1880s, so now we’re putting time and effort into setting up a brewery and bar here.” Their first beers include an Australian IPA, an American red and a pilsner. Bevan Dalziel and Fergus McGregor launched West City Brewing last year with their Oaty Session stout. They have since rolled out a Footscray ale and Sunshine ale in homage to their westside roots. Their Footscray ale was one of the featured craft beers at this year’s Laneway Festival. Donors to pay for body’s return By Goya Dmytryshchak A GoFundMe page has been set up to help return to New Zealand the body of a man killed by a train at Altona Meadows on Thursday. Twenty-year-old Hoppers Crossing man Jason Kahukiwa and his 21-year-old friend from Point Cook, Callum Hall, died after being struck by a city-bound train about 11.45pm. Police initially established a crime scene near the corner of Merton Street and Railway Avenue but later said no criminality was

involved and described the deaths as a “definite tragedy”. Aleisha Hancy, the best friend of Mr Kahukiwa’s sister, created the GoFundMe page with the aim of raising $15,000. “In Maori tradition, we take the whole body back to New Zealand,” she said. “We put the body back to earth as a whole, so it’s going to cost around $15,000. “That will cover him getting back there and also the parents as well, because his parents live here on the west side.” Mr Kahukiwa’s sister Kylie flew to Melbourne on Saturday night.

Paul Bekesi, a resident opposite the tragic scene, said a car, believed to belong to one of the men, had been parked outside his house. He said police towed the car from Linden Street on Friday morning. “It’s a pretty sad sort of thing to see what happened,” he said. “Two young people, it’s a waste of life.” The GoFundMe page, called Bring my brother home, had raised more than $8000 in three days. Joan’s garden blooming A garden commemorating Victoria’s first female premier and Williamstown resident Joan Kirner will be opened next month by the Williamstown Community and Education Centre. Joan’s Garden at Joan Kirner House in Thompson Street will be opened on June 1, a year to the day since Ms Kirner died after a battle with oesophageal cancer and other illnesses. Her husband Ron described the garden, which features an art installation, as “absolutely superb”. “I think it’s just the most marvellous piece of work,” he said. “I think she’d be very pleased, she’d be very proud. I’m sure she’d appreciate it because it’s got so many symbols of the things she stood for. “A lot of thought has gone into it. A man was killed when his car collided head-on with a truck on Dohertys Road in Laverton North shortly before 9am on Tuesday. The car subsequently caught on fire and the male driver, the sole occupant of the car, died at the scene. The truck driver was not injured.

Girls will be girls online A desire to create a space for “girls to be girls” has sparked an online project. The Girls Will Be Girls website, co-created by Tennessee Mynott-Rudland and Claire Macallister, consists of visual art and storytelling, highlighting ideas and conversations about identifying as a woman. Ms Mynott-Rudland, a Footscray resident, said the unapologetically feminist website was seeking personal and creative contributions for the “multi-disciplinary online platform”. “We are calling it a space for women to be their unflinching and unapologetic selves, where they can be applauded and supported doing that,” she said. As well as articles and artworks by local women artists, Girls Will Be Girls features an ongoing “What’s On in Feminist Melbourne”

Exposure arrest

Police have arrested a 58-year-old man after he was allegedly seen exposing himself in front of a child in Altona North on Friday. The man is accused of touching himself inappropriately about 3pm on the corner of Millers and McArthurs roads. The Altona North man has been charged with wilful and obscene exposure, and performing an indecent act in front of a child. He has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 8.

Fury over ‘Mad Max’ truck By Benjamin Millar The sighting of a ‘Mad Max’-style truck in Footscray has prompted warnings that drivers face serious penalties if caught with dangerous modifications. The truck, bearing sharply spiked wheel nuts, was seen travelling along Ballarat Road and Geelong Road last Monday by Maribyrnong councillor Michael Clarke. Cr Clarke followed the truck and took photos of the spikes sticking out from the front wheels on both side of the truck. “Mad Max, eat your heart out,” he said. “To every bike rider in this great state of Victoria, you now have more than a good reason to be very scared.” Cr Clarke said the driver would have known the accessories were highly illegal. “The truck needs to be confiscated by VicRoads and the driver’s licence cancelled,” he said. “A message needs to be sent to all in the trucking industry that such accessories are like wielding a series of knives. Anyone getting close to this vehicle runs the risk of becoming mince meat.” Victoria Police spokeswoman Amelia Penhall said anyone who sees any similar modifications should report it to their local police station. “A person using spiked wheel nut covers can be issued an infringement for $379 for use of a vehicle that is unsafe or has been modified or does not comply with the Standards for Registration.” VicRoads regulatory services director Eric

Henderson said vehicles can not be fitted with any protruding object that is likely to increase the risk of bodily injury. The spiked wheel nuts may also increase the width of the truck beyond its legal maximum of 2.5 metres. Mr Henderson said spiked wheel nuts have been available across Australia for many years, but their use on heavy vehicles appears to be relatively isolated. “The Heavy Vehicle National Law applies significant penalties to the vehicle owner for non-compliance,” he said. “In the interests of the community safety, we strongly advise against the use of spiked wheel nuts on trucks or any other vehicle. Victorian Transport Association spokesman Brian O’Neil criticised the use of the spikes. “Trucks like that should not be on the road,” he said.

Dog days over for Ben While some thought he was barking up the wrong tree, Ben Coyle has proved the doubters wrong by making his cafe a creative home in Footscray. But after 15 years running the Dancing Dog Cafe, he is heading overseas. He hopes the Albert Street institution will continue in one form or another and is calling for anyone interested in taking over the business to get in touch. “Nothing really existed like this in the area when I opened – a loungey sort of cafe,” he said. “I wanted somewhere for good coffee with a bit more of a community vibe.” The cafe began with a gallery space, moving on to host award-winning theatre and, more recently comedy, poetry and music.

More than two million coffees and 1000 events later, the former Customs dog handler has decided it is time for a new adventure. After writing a book based on his hospitality experience, Spilling the Beans, Mr Coyle is heading to Singapore to pursue hospitality consulting. He hopes the spirit of the Dancing Dog Cafe can continue on, pointing out that a crowd-funding campaign last year in a bid to buy the building in which it is housed showed the depth of community feeling for the space. “Obviously, the community cares about the venue so hopefully the next owners can take it to the next level,” he said. Hear, hear to audio aids Even when they constantly have to ask others to repeat themselves, many people experiencing hearing loss can be in denial and believing others are just mumbling. “This can make it more difficult for concerned family members to raise the issue without causing offence or distress,” says Bernadette Rebello from Active Audiology. “Family and friends can also, through kindness, make excuses for a loved one’s hearing problems. It’s just their age, they might say, or they’re distracted, or it’s just a natural part of the ageing process that needs to be accommodated. “But over time, this can become frustrating and those with a hearing issue may gradually get excluded from gatherings or outings. This, in turn, can lead them to stop going to any event where conversation, especially in groups, feels impossible. Formerly active lives may come to a standstill.”

Bernadette suggests questions, such as “Do you find people mumble? Do you ever feel exhausted in group settings? Do you think your husband/wife may be unhappy about missing out on things?” Bernadette also explains that even people who recognise their hearing loss will avoid getting a hearing device because they believe it will make them look ‘old’. “My response to this is that a stereotype of older people can include someone who mishears often, constantly asks for repeats or accuses others of mumbling,” she says. “These issues can label someone as ‘old’ far more than the presence of a hearing device which can be quite hard to detect these days.” Active Audiology, a completely independent provider, has been giving expert, unbiased advice for 11 years. Holidaying wife mystery solved By Emily Woods, The Age When Janina Wojcik left her Altona home on Christmas Eve 1962, she told her husband she was going on a holiday. He never saw her again. Thus began one of the most intriguing mysteries and longest-running police investigations in Victoria. After 54 years’ missing, police on Saturday revealed they had solved the case. Janina had remarried, changed her name and created a new life for herself as a public servant in Canberra. She died from a medical condition in 2010, aged 87. The drive to crack the long-running mystery came from Hobsons Bay police’s Detective Senior Constable Luke Dalli, who took over the investigation in 2013. “I inherited the case from another team. There had been a lot of work done, but it needed a fresh set of eyes,” he said. He took to social media and spread the word through The Age and other media, seeking public assistance to breathe new life into the mysterious disappearance. Ms Wojcik’s husband Marion had reported Janina missing three months after he last saw her, wearing a blue skirt and white cardigan as she left their David Street, Altona, home. Originally, police investigators established a taxi driver had taken Janina from her home to the Newport railway station. Little progress was made for another five decades, but the breakthrough finally came when Detective Senior Constable Dalli received a call from the ACT Trustees Office last year.

His plan had worked. A Trustees officer had seen a news story on Janina’s disappearance. “Their job was trying to finalise a deceased person’s estate and they couldn’t find any family members,” he said. “This person got in contact with me to see if there were similarities. Together we were able to reconcile the records and marry up the person she was looking for. “Then I was able to get photos of when she became a citizen and when she was naturalised, I was able to get her new marriage certificate and death certificate.” He said Janina Wojcik was classified as a displaced person following World War II and had moved to Australia to begin a new life. In 1962 it appeared her marriage to Mr Wojcik had broken down. She left without telling anyone, met a man named Karl Gruber and resettled in Canberra soon after. The couple married on January 4, 1977. Mr Wojcik died before police could ever tell him what had happened to his wife.

Refinery upgrade to create jobs By Goya Dmytryshchak ExxonMobil on Thursday announced a $20 million investment in its Altona refinery to expand fuel production by nearly 13 per cent. The refinery processes up to 13 million litres of crude oil a day into petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and LPG. The upgrade to the refinery’s crude unit will enable production to grow from 80,000 barrels a day to 90,000 barrels.

Project construction will start in May and is expected to be completed in 2017. The upgrade will create 50 jobs during construction. Andrew Warrell, Exxon’s refining manager for Australia and New Zealand, said the production growth would reverse the cuts that were made when the refinery was struggling to survive a decade ago. “What makes this significant is, it’s the first time we have grown our crude

processing capacity since 2005,” he said. “Back in 2005 we went through a pretty tough and confronting time as a business. “We actually shrank in order to survive, so how exciting it is for everyone who works here to be back in a phase of renewal and growth.” The $20 million expenditure is part of more than $370 million invested at the site over the past five years. Minister for Industry, Energy and Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio, said the

investment was great news for the state. “This investment in the Altona plant is another vote of confidence for Victoria’s reputation as a hub for business investment and our strong AAA-rated economy,” she said. “Improvements in infrastructure and energy efficiency will further drive the plant’s economic benefits and contributions to the state, which is great news for Victorian jobs and workers.” – with Peter Ker/Sydney Morning Herald

On a mission to help A century of service locally and around the world will be celebrated by Williamstown Gospel Mission Church at a thanksgiving service this Sunday. The small independent evangelical church began its work on May 19, 1916, originally meeting in the schoolrooms of a house at Pasco Street. As numbers grew, the congregation moved to the nearby Oddfellows Hall, also in Pasco Street and became the Williamstown Gospel Mission. In 1922, parishioners started a building fund and in 1928 bought a block at 8-10 Electra Street, where the church stands today. Pastor Nick Holod said the church’s driving force had been its missionary work. “We’ve supported missionaries local, interstate and overseas,” he said. “Many of our own people have gone out to those mission fields – Aboriginal work, European work, Japanese, Borneo, South-East Asia … I could go on.

“In the 1920s, the church conducted out-reach work in south Williamstown, Fisherman’s Bend, Port Melbourne and Werribee.” A big focus of the church today is a fortnightly men’s group it calls the Men’s Support Mission. “This group helps men, and their families, that are going through various difficult issues such as divorce and separation, depression, anger issues, various addictions and loneliness,” Mr Holod said. “It’s not churchy churchy – we’re talking about real facts and figures … what’s going on in our local community and what we can do about it, how we’re going to help people. “We’ve seen lives change for the better through this group.” Mr Holod is also involved with Prison Fellowship Victoria, which organises concerts and programs at local prisons. I’m a member of the Williamstown Motorcycle Club, which is pretty good. It’s just a group of people that go motorcycling together and it’s a nice little group, it’s a good club. And we wander down to the Spotswood RSL occasionally. What do you love about Spotswood? Spotswood is down to earth. It’s not full of yuppies and it’s not full of university graduates. I think it’s a little gem. It’s so close to the city and it’s between everything and it’s a really lovely place to live. If I had my chance I don’t think I’d go anywhere else. It’s an oasis. What would you change? I’d like to see a couple more restaurants in Spotswood.

Hundreds farewell Jimmy Hundreds of mourners turned out to pay their final respects to Footscray restaurant icon Jimmy Wong. Mr Wong, 75, and widely regarded as Melbourne’s “king of dim sims”, died after a brain haemorrhage sustained in a fall down the stairs of his popular Barkly Street establishment, Jim Wong Restaurant, earlier this month. A funeral at Whitten Oval last Thursday afternoon heard tributes to a “beautiful” man who had spent most of his life devoted to his family and to Footscray. A Western Bulldogs jumper bearing his name beneath the lucky number eight was draped across his coffin. Celebrant Jeanette Bourke paid tribute to one of Footscray’s favourite sons, noting he touched people from all walks of life. “Jimmy was a Footscray man through and

through. He loved it here and he never wanted to leave,” she said. A eulogy by his teenage granddaughters, Stephanie and Alexandra, told of a loving family man who made the best life he could for his wife Marianne and their three children. Stephanie told the story of Jimmy’s arrival in Melbourne as a young boy searching for a new life. He learnt his craft from an uncle and soon opened his own restaurant at the age of 18. In 1965, it was “love at first sight” with beautiful wife-to-be Marianne and they were married within six months. Jimmy remained devoted to his family, restaurant and other big loves – the Bulldogs, horse racing and late-night card games. THE PREMIERSHIP’s A CAKE WALK Much to the horror of my Bulldogs-loving husband, I recently made my son a Collingwood cake to celebrate his 11th birthday – complete with a rather laid-back fondant icing figure on top! It was a double-layer chocolate cake filled with vanilla butter cream.

FB: How would you rate your cooking skills?

The cake recipe I used is one I’ve shared before and relied on for years, because it’s so incredibly easy and takes all of five minutes to prepare. Throw the following into a mixer bowl: one cup of sifted self-raising flour, 3 heaped tablespoons of cocoa (if you want a vanilla cake, leave the cocoa out and just add a dash of vanilla essence), one cup of caster sugar, 3 heaped tablespoons of margarine, 1/3 cup of milk, and 2 eggs. Mix on medium speed for 3 to 4 minutes, pour into a lined round or square cake pan and bake for about 40 minutes at 180C. This recipe produces a nice, moist cake that’s especially easy to carve up if you’re trying to sculpt a birthday masterpiece. I use the same mixture to make cupcakes and it works well – as you can see by the assorted sports ball cupcakes I made for an earlier birthday. SPORT IN THE DOGHOUSE The Western Region Football League seniors and under-19s will take on the Ballarat Football League at Whitten Oval on Saturday as part of the AFL Victoria Community Championships. The coaching panel, led by Anthony Eames (seniors) and Matty Dean (under-19), has assembled the best possible sides to represent the west. We all have rose-colored glasses in this area, but I truly believe the WRFL is on the up and will prove it on Saturday. Gator’s thrilling rebound By Lance Jenkinson Tyson Burton has daily reminders of how lucky he is to be walking let alone playing competitive basketball for the Altona Gators. If the scar across the front of his neck is not confronting enough, the 30-centimetre line of stitches along his spine shows just how fortunate he is to be jousting with the big men in Big V basketball men’s division 2. Burton feared he would never walk again after a freak accident left him paralysed. He was 15 at the time and had just returned from a fishing trip when he tried to get out of the boat, only for a foot to get tangled. When Burton fell back, he did so into shallow water, striking his head on a hard surface. The fall caused fractures in his spine. “When it happened, I was completely paralysed,” Burton told Star Weekly. “I hit my head pretty hard and everyone was pretty worried. It took them a day to realise I’d broken my neck. At first they were saying I’d never be walking for the rest of my life. It wasn’t looking too good.” The odds were stacked against Burton. For the whole of 2013, he was in a complete daze as his medication took hold. Surgery was risky, but giving up on hope was not an option for Burton. The sports-loving teenager – at the time a basketballer with the Gators and a footballer with Point Cook – had too much energy to spend his life confined to a wheelchair. “It was pretty risky surgery, but they did a good job of it. I’m still around.” Burton never gave up hope of walking again. The Point Cook resident underwent intensive rehabilitation and began to turn the corner as the strength of his family and friends pulled him through dark days. In particular, his brother, Daniel, a personal trainer, was there every step of the way. The reward for Daniel is the chance to play basketball with his brother, which they do so every Wednesday night. Burton’s excitement levels rise when basketball is discussed.

The 18-year-old spends his lunch breaks watching NBA League Pass, and he’s more than willing to dissect the LA Clippers’ season. Then he takes me back to the day at the end of his rehab that he holds close to his heart. “They told me I wouldn’t play basketball again,” Burton said. “But I kept getting better and eventually the doctor let me play. “That was the best thing I ever heard in my life – when they said I could play again.” Even with the all-clear from the specialist, Burton had a significant mental hurdle to overcome. He began his comeback by simply hitting free throws. Once Burton was back on the court, he was fair game – and it was during one of these early matches that his confidence in his body fully returned. “I was just mucking around and got a big hit to the head and it was all good,” he said. “I got confidence from that hard knock. There are times when I still think twice about things

because of it, but most of the time it’s pretty good.” This is Burton’s second season back for the Altona Gators. In his first, he played sporadic minutes as a back-up big. He’s the first to admit he wasn’t in gameshape for big minutes last season, but a lengthy pre-season campaign had him in tip-top shape heading into this year, even if it was slightly derailed by a foot injury. Gators coach Des Radoslovic is amazed by Burton’s improvement on and off the court. “He had a broken neck two years ago and was told he wasn’t going to walk again,” Radoslovic said. “His improvement from the start of last year, coming in out of shape and out of nowhere basically, to now … he’s our starting centre and just such an important part of the team.” Burton is an under-sized centre, but he’s banging bodies with some quality division 2 bigs, something that doesn’t faze him in the slightest as he’s averaging 13.4 points and 6.4 rebounds. Burton’s numbers continue to improve game by game. He reached a season-high 20 points for the first time two weeks ago and his field goal efficiency is up there with the best centres in the league. Burton has played between 20 and 25 minutes a game on a regular basis this season, the only limitation on his minutes being foul trouble. He has fouled out in three games in 2016 as he adjusts to the way the game is officiated in division 2. “Last season, when we were playing division 1, the referees sort of let it go a bit,” he said. “But since going down to division 2, it’s a bit softer I think.” Burton wants to feature in a Gators playoff campaign. But above all, he will cherish every moment he has on court, whether it be with the Gators or just shooting around in the local park, because he knows how quickly it can be taken away. “I’m just enjoying being able to play.”

Congratulations to Wyndhamvale on winning its first ever WRFL division 1 game last Saturday, beating Spotswood by 11 points. For years I’ve been talking about the massive jump from second to first division, but the Falcons did not go on a spending spree to try to be competitive. They mainly placed their faith in the players who had done the job to get to first division. Yes, it’s only one win, but there were many who thought they might not even get that.

was fantastic to have Alastair Clarkson return to Werribee Football Club last Sunday and speak at the pre-game breakfast. Many people don’t know that the four-time AFL premiership coach got his first senior job at Werribee in 2000. He has fond memories of that year in which the club just missed the finals, finishing ninth. It was the first year of AFL/ VFL alignments and he had half the Bulldogs list at Chirnside Park, including Bob Murphy, Ryan Hargrave and Lindsay Gilbee, all in their first AFL year. At the end of that season the Bulldogs decided to go to a full alignment and had to choose between Werribee and Williamstown. Clarkson was involved in Werribee’s pitch to be that club, knowing full well he would lose his job if the bid was successful. It was and he did . . . and the rest is football history.

Third time’s the charm By Lance Jenkinson Altona Roosters Rugby League Club has claimed a win close to their hearts. The Roosters came home with the Tyrel Hunt Memorial Shield after their third attempt with a thrilling 18-16 win over western rivals Werribee Bears in the NRL Victoria first grade at Haines Drive Reserve on Saturday. The shield was struck up between the two sides in 2014 after the tragic death of Hunt in 2014. It meant a lot for the Roosters players to bring the shield home. “It’s the first time in three years that we’ve won that shield,” Roosters coach Jason Warr told Star Weekly. “The boys were pretty ecstatic in the sheds.” It was a significant victory for Altona on another level. It showed that if they are playing to their optimum, they are good enough to beat the best sides in the competition. Werribee is a serious premiership contender this season and went into the game undefeated. The Bears previous defeat came in last year’s grand final. When Pio Nakubuwai crossed over in the corner for the Roosters’ winning try with five minutes to go, it signalled a new challenger in the mix and sent a message to the rest of the competition. “It’s a huge result,” Warr said after the Roosters improved to 3-2 for the season. “It was about keeping our season on track. “The boys turned up and it makes wonders when they turn up and play the way they did. “We can take that form into next week against the premiers Casey.” New recruit Kane Marriott quickly endeared himself to the Altona fans. Vikings share the goals

By Liam Twomey Life in the western suburbs suits Charlotte Morris. The talented 16-year-old moved to Maribyrnong at the start of the year from Euroa with the goal of taking her rowing career to the next level. Since then, Morris has made a splash in her new surroundings. The now Brooklyn resident captured three gold medals and one silver medal in the under-16 division at the Victorian Open State Championships in Ballarat last month. She backed that performance up with another gold medal, this time in the single sculls event at the School Sport Victoria regatta. “Originally I started rowing after doing a program at my old school,” Morris said. “I started taking it a bit more seriously after my first couple of races. I was doing quite well and really started to enjoy it. “Moving down to Melbourne was quite challenging. It was really hard at first, going through such a drastic change, but I am slowly settling into it.” Morris is a student at Maribyrnong College where she is enrolled in the school’s specialised sports program. She said the school had been great in helping her adjust to her busy commitments which, in the lead-up to a major event, can include early morning water sessions, multiple strength and conditioning sessions and other training. “It is quite challenging to balance it all, but the school is great about it,” she said. “They are very flexible. You’re with a lot of other like-minded people who know what they need to focus on.” Morris’ other impressive achievements include qualifying in the under-17 division

for the national rowing championships in Sydney. Her long-term goal is to make an Australian team for a major competition. For her outstanding sports achievements, Morris has been named as a monthly nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with Star Weekly Weekly.

Morris received $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in her future sporting goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level. Two points vanish for Magic Altona Magic has left points on the table for the first time this season in Football Federation Victoria’s state league 1. The Magic went into the clash with second-placed Sydenham Park with a maximum 18 points from six games. They played out an entertaining 3-3 draw, ensuring Magic kept its six-point lead. Magic came from a goal down at half-time to secure a point with a double by Adamson Ajayi and a goal to Jon McShane. In the derby, Altona East Phoenix and Yarraville Glory drew 2-2 at Paisley Park. VU spurs on Melbourne By Lance Jenkinson Melbourne will be heavily influenced on and off the field by VU Western Spurs players and staff when they tackle Brisbane Lions in the AFL women’s exhibition game at the MCG on Sunday. The Spurs have four players in the 24-player squad and a further four support staff assisting the Demons’ cause in the latest in a series of exhibition games ahead of the launch of a national women’s league next year. Spurs media head Kelly Borradale said the game was generating much excitement. “It’s a huge achievement,” she said of the Spurs’ involvement. The Spurs “big four” of Bree White, Amy Harrison, Ashleigh Guest and Ainslie Kemp will pull on the red and the blue of Melbourne. White is no stranger to the jumper. Having featured in past exhibition games for the Demons, the 34-year-old will be one of the more experienced players involved. Spurs coach Debbie Lee, who is also Melbourne’s community manager, could not speak highly enough of White. “Bree’s been an outstanding leader,” Lee said. “Particularly in the last two years with the Spurs, when it was really tough – we didn’t win

a game last year – her leadership is so valuable on field. “Just the way she’s able to give information and the way she goes about her game, the preparation – she’s an elite athlete. “The amount of running she does – I’d like to put a GPS on her because she just covers so much of the ground. She definitely leads by example.” Kemp is the youngest out of the four, having come out of the Kyneton youth girls team last season. The Kyneton rookie is turning heads with her natural talent and bubbly personality. “She’s a very enthusiastic young kid, so keen to learn and take on feedback,” Borradale said. “She just has that raw, natural talent – so exciting to watch.” The Spurs have many talented people working hard behind the scenes to get the team to the finals in the women’s VFL. For the AFL match, the Demons will enjoy the services of Spurs training staff Kosti Danilow and Mark Skec, strength and conditioning coach Ben Sortino and statistician Lisa Blackburn. “It’s really important for the coaches to have all those support people in place,” Borradale said.

In top-class Territory The Territory is arguably the best vehicle ever designed by Ford Australia. It is based on the Falcon and shares some of its mechanical components, particularly in the powertrain, but many parts are unique to the big wagon. An SUV with the option of two- or four-wheel drive, it was launched in May, 2004, with a major makeover in May, 2011, and a facelift in December, 2014, including the addition of a comprehensive infotainment system. Most Ford Territories have a straight-six 4.0-litre petrol engine, with a turbocharged version of this six being offered from July, 2006. The engines are on the thirsty side, but have improved over the years due to engine technology advances. The six-speed petrol autos are noticeably more economical than the four-speeders. The long-overdue option of a turbo-diesel engine (2.7-litre V6) was introduced in 2011.

Territories are holding their value well. What to look for: • Make sure the automatic transmission doesn’t hold on to gears or change gears too often when it really should be holding the one ratio. • Possible leaks at front brake hoses were the subject of a voluntary recall in March, 2009. Check with a Ford dealer or the company’s head office to see if the work has been done. • Look at the condition of the body in case the Territory has been in off-road territory. Signs of damage are generally at the bumper corners, underneath of the door sills and on the underbody. Also look for tiny scratches in the body side where it has been squeezed through undergrowth.

Driving the message home Victoria Police has a new tool to promote safety on Victoria’s roads. The Mercedes AMG GLE 63 S Coupe, codenamed Guardian, will be used as both an operational highway patrol car and to promote in-car safety features when it’s exhibited across the state over the next 12 months. Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said it was important for people to consider buying the safest car they could afford when the time came to purchase a new vehicle. Could this be a sign of things to come once Victoria Police doesn’t have new Commodores and Falcons to choose from?
