Brennan sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital under police guard. She was the sole occupant of the Commodore. Brennan appeared briefly at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday. She was bailed to reappear in the same court on August 2. Family friend Emma Mackey said a GoFundMe page had been set up by mutual friend, Pam McGuire, to help Mr Dunlop’s children. “He had three kids: Shanee, age 11, Brye, nine, and Memphis, six, who he loved with all his heart,” Mrs Mackey said. “Alan and his family are extremely close and this has hit them all pretty hard. He was a great person with a heart of gold. “Always loved by every person he met. Life cut way too short.” Mrs Mackey said that on Saturday, Mr Dunlop wasn’t feeling well so his cousin, who was driving, pulled over in to the emergency lane near Fitzgerald Road in West Sunshine. Police said Mr Dunlop stepped out of the Ford Laser on to the side of the road and a short time later the rear of the stationary car was allegedly struck by a purple Commodore.

Rebuild the hospital, says Finn Outdated Footscray Hospital is “shameful” and should be “bulldozed and rebuilt”, State Parliament has been told. Western suburbs upper house Liberal MP Bernie Finn called on Health Minister Jill Hennessey last week to provide the funding to rebuild the hospital from the ground up. Star Weekly reported recently that $17 million was allocated in the state budget to help renovate three wards and plan future redevelopment works. But western suburbs Greens MP Colleen

Hartland labelled the funding a “Band-aid measure”, given that a briefing document prepared for the state government in 2014 warned that more than $300 million needed to be spent at the hospital to keep up with growing demand. Mr Finn told Parliament the funding for Footscray Hospital was “a mere drop in the bucket” compared to what was needed. “I recall early in my tenure as a member for Western Metropolitan Region visiting Footscray Hospital and being absolutely shocked at what I saw and experienced,” he said. “Despite the best efforts of doctors and the

nurses, who all do a wonderful job, what they have to work with there is not a lot better than what one would see in a Third World country.” Mr Finn said the hospital had long outlived its usefulness and nurses and doctors were working under difficult circumstances “because of the state of this decrepit hospital”. “That’s something I think we should be ashamed of, that we would have a hospital serving a community which, quite frankly, should be bulldozed and rebuilt,” he said. Mr Finn called on Ms Hennessey to allocate the money necessary to rebuild the hospital. Treasurer Tim Pallas told Star Weekly the

Thieves flog our favorite horse A Footscray icon of more than 30 years has bolted. Chester, the fibreglass Footscray Paint Spot horse, went missing from his Buckley Street location on Friday and his whereabouts remain unknown. Owner Chris Dobinson said staff alerted him to the disappearance on Friday and there had been no sightings since. “We bring him in and out every day,” Mr Dobinson said. “We put him out at 6am on Friday and by 9.30am he was gone. It’s a terrible event.” Mr Dobinson said he suspected the theft may be a prank and no questions would be asked if the thieves returned Chester unscathed. Chester weighs 25kg and stands almost two metres tall, so it would have taken a concerted effort to steal him. “You’d think someone must have seen something,” Mr Dobinson said. “If it’s just a practical joke or a group of drunks or bongheads, we really just want to see him back.” Chester’s disappearance sparked a chorus of consternation on social media and Mr Dobinson said the public outcry showed how iconic Chester had become. “Everyone has grown up with it,” he said. “We knew there was a really strong connection and as soon as you say the yellow shop with the white horse out the front, everyone knows what you mean.” Mr Dobinson will take the theft up with the police but said he expected a few raised eyebrows from any insurance claim. He said hopes were slim of finding the original mould for Chester, who was created as part of a 1970s Wattyl Paints marketing campaign. “Nothing ceases to amaze me after this long in Footscray,” Me Dobinson said. “We’ll push through and we’re hopeful we’ll get him back.”

Man killed at roundabout Williamstown residents have renewed calls for a pedestrian crossing at a major roundabout after a man died while crossing Melbourne Road last Friday. The 59-year-old Williamstown man was struck by a bus near Ferguson Street just after 6pm. Police said the exact cause of the collision had yet to be determined. Customers in the Hot Wings chicken shop saw the crash and reported that the bus driver was hysterical. Williamstown resident Patrick Walsh said he had crossed at the same spot with a pram about an hour earlier. “It’s tough to see where people are heading, not always indicating, and the roundabout is not truly round [it is elliptical],” he said. “The buses have to swing around it at an unnatural angle for a bus, probably creating a blind spot for the driver. “Crossing with a pram is much harder, so I can only imagine the difficulties for the elderly or wheelchairs.” VicRoads regional director Vince Punaro said there were three crashes at the corner of Melbourne Road and Ferguson Street between 2010 and 2015, resulting in two serious injuries. “We review all types of crashes to understand how we can improve safety for all road users,” he said. “We will review the circumstances of last Friday’s incident before determining whether any additional improvements to increase safety for pedestrians are required at this intersection.” Anyone who saw the accident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Candidates on the warpath By Benjamin Millar Liberal and Greens candidates will be aiming to shake the ALP’s firm grip on the federal seats of Maribyrnong, Gellibrand and Lalor – among the safest in Australia – on polling day, July 2. Opposition leader Bill Shorten, who has held the seat of Maribyrnong since 2007, says he has been an active local member who has spent his life standing up for people on low and middle incomes. Mr Shorten’s 2013 Liberal rival Ted Hatzakortzian is returning for another tilt. The Niddrie resident says he has a passion for helping the community. “I understand the issues facing communities in Melbourne’s west and understand that growing the economy to create jobs for local families is a key priority,” he said. The Greens will be represented by Carlton resident, VU lecturer and human rights campaigner Olivia Ball. “Only the Greens have the courage and vision to stand up for what matters: a better future of equality, justice, renewable energy and a sensible and compassionate plan for people seeking asylum,” Dr Ball said. Gellibrand incumbent Tim Watts, who took the baton from Nicola Roxon in 2013, said the past three years of Liberal government had been terrible for Melbourne’s west. “Funding for our schools and hospital has been slashed, investment in renewable energy has collapsed, and the government stood by as thousands of jobs were lost at Toyota Altona and BAE Shipyards in Williamstown,” he said.

Liberal candidate Ben Willis, of Footscray, works in human resources and studies law part-time. “I’m passionate about empowering small businesses which are the backbone of our economy and defending personal liberties,” he said.

Labor’s Joanne Ryan has held Lalor since the 2013 election. The former school teacher and principal and Werribee local took over the seat from former prime minister Julia Gillard. The Liberals’ Gayle Murphy’s website stated the community had been taken for granted by Labor, and she pledged that she will be the “strong voice and real action local families deserve”. Suburban camouflage The Australian dream of home ownership is under the microscope in Footscray this week as part of the 2016 Next Wave Festival. Shadows on the Hill, by Perth artist Dan McCabe, features a tent shaped like an early 1990s station wagon that has been designed to blend into the urban landscape. The mobile artwork pitches an alternative to Australia’s expensive housing market and touches on topics including climate change, economic crises and the reality of the ‘renting generation’. McCabe spent Monday and Tuesday pitched in a suburban Footscray street and will be

setting up home at Footscray Community Arts Centre from Thursday until Saturday. Next Wave artistic director Georgie Meagher said passers-by were encouraged to chat to the 25-year-old about the work and the challenges confronting young Australians today. “Dan McCabe’s tactical photography is transformed into a disconcerting suburban camouflage, that, somewhat ironically, aims to make visible the paradoxes and contradictions of the dreams we’re taught to dream,” she said. By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona Meadows woman says she’s considering moving after being a victim of crime twice in three days. Other residents are thinking about forming night patrols because of “ongoing troubles”. The woman, who asked not to be named, said she was the victim of road rage on Sunday, May 1, while driving to the local shopping centre in the middle of the day. Two days later, she was threatened with a pair of scissors at the shops after breaking up a fight. In the road rage incident, she was driving with her 17-year-old daughter in Central Avenue when a car pulled in front of her, blocking her path. “A car sped up behind me … I checked my speedo and I was doing the right speed,” she said. “I just stayed there. “This car went in front of me, no blinker … my daughter saw it out of her eye and leaned over and tapped on the horn, just a little beep, because she was scared. “He stopped in front of me … he got out of his car, walked up to my windscreen on the driver’s side, slammed my windscreen and swore, and all that sort of stuff.” Two days later, the woman was heading back to her car in a local shopping centre carpark when she witnessed a fight between two youths. “This older kid was punching the younger

kid in the head, full-fisted, so I put my trolley between them,” she said. “I said, ‘Stop, stop hurting him, you need to stop’. “But it ended up that that kid was part of a little group of four … they went to the outside door and stood there watching me … the bigger kid pulled a pair of scissors part-way out of his pocket so I could see them. “I really think Altona Meadows is changing. I’ve lived here for 27 years. I said to my husband, ‘We need to move’.” Another Altona Meadows resident said he

was compiling a list of streets most hit by crime to plan routes for a neighbourhood patrol to drive around and keep an eye out. “It shouldn’t be our job to risk ourselves, but unfortunately that’s what it’s come down to,” he said. Hobsons Bay police’s Inspector Michelle Young said there had been no significant rise in crime in Altona Meadows. “There are sometimes incidents whereby perceptions about safety may be adversely effected, but this doesn’t indicate rises,” she said.

A Footscray designer with a social conscious is making her mark in the fashion world. Iva Pfeiffer has been selected as one of just a handful of emerging designers invited to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia showcase in Sydney, opening this Sunday. Death deflected by love By Goya Dmytryshchak A locket close to his heart may have saved the life of Laverton man Albert Victor Hyde when a shell exploded in front of him during World War 1. He is among 26 local men, including his brother Edward Ernest Hyde, whose stories will be revealed at the unveiling of an honour board at Old Laverton School on May 21. Sergeant Albert Hyde’s son, Tarneit resident Glen Hyde, said his father was sent to Gallipoli in 1915 with the 14th Battalion before being transferred to the 46th Battalion and sent to France to fight the Germans. He said his father had a miraculous escape while advancing across no man’s land when a shell exploded in front of him. “His right leg was fractured in several places and his body riddled with shrapnel,” Mr Hyde said. “When he was eventually taken to hospital, the doctor was about to amputate his leg, but fortunately dad was conscious and begged the doctor not to amputate. “An amount of shrapnel was removed from his body – approximately 26 pieces – but several pieces were left. “We used to feel the shrapnel in dad’s arms, his back, his hand and above his right eye.” Mr Hyde said the shrapnel was there until the day his father died. “On enlisting and before going overseas, his fiancee, Irene Newland, gave him a locket which contained a photo of herself,” Mr Hyde said. “He wore this around his neck on a chain. A large piece of shrapnel struck this locket, destroying it but probably saving his life.” When Sergeant Hyde returned from war, he married Irene. Four of Irene’s brothers had also enlisted. Lindsay Newland was killed in action in

Belgium; William and Herbert were wounded in France; and James, as a captain, was awarded a Victoria Cross in leading his men in three separate actions against the Germans. Stories such as these will be shared at this month’s unveiling of the Laverton honour board at a free public event dubbed ‘Sons, Brothers and Friends’. It will be held at Old Laverton School, corner Kiora Street and Cameron Avenue, Laverton, at from 2pm on Saturday, May 21.

Man charged over train ‘art’ A U.S. national and self-proclaimed graffiti ‘artist’ has been charged with defacing trains in Williamstown and other Melbourne suburbs. Jim Clay Harper, 31, goes by the name Ether and runs a website with his partner, Utah, which promotes their ‘art’ carried out on trains around the world. Harper was arrested in Fitzroy last week for allegedly punching a man and trying to steal his mobile phone and over several alleged “major graffiti incidents” around the metropolitan rail network. About 120 people have signed a petition against a proposed Liberty service station at the corner of Civic Parade and Millers Road in Seaholme. The site was formerly Mifsud Motors, a car yard and mechanical workshop, which closed in February after 32 years. Antola Pty Ltd has applied to Hobsons Bay council for a planning permit to operate the petrol station and convenience store, commissioning a report which states the site was a petrol station in the 1960s. The site is zoned general residential, with

houses adjoining either side, a small shopping strip diagonally across the intersection and Seaholme Primary School directly opposite. Objectors say a service station will negatively impact on the safety and amenity of the school and Seaholme and Altona residents, while it is also out of character with the quality of the established residential neighbourhood and will cause traffic chaos. School parent Bill Young said he was concerned about the potential hazardous materials and traffic. “The application doesn’t state the volumes of combustibles to be stored on site nor does it

state the type,” he said. “I’m concerned about the lack of safety and environment information supplied in the proposal.” A report prepared for Antola states that general residential zoning allowed for non-residential uses if the location was appropriate to serve the local community. “The site’s size and location at the intersection of two higher-order roads makes the proposed use logical,” it stated. “The site’s long history of non-residential land use, including previous service station use, supports the proposal.” Submissions can be made until the application goes before the council.

Curator for his people Sunshine’s Phuong Ngo will this week give a talk at Newport’s Substation about his Vietnam archive, collected over six years. The Vietnam Archive Project is a collection of slides, photos, film reels, documents, maps and objects about the Vietnam War. Mr Ngo has a background in politics and international relations and began studying art in 2009. “In 2010, I came across a group of slides on sale on eBay from America and I acquired them out of curiosity,” he said. “It basically snowballed into a collection that now stands over 10,000 slides, between five and 10,000 photos and countless other objects. “Most of it was shot during the war so probably 90 per cent of my material is from the war and then there’s a small component that’s post-war and a small component going back to the French Colonial period.”

Mr Ngo said his archive was driven by a quest to find about more about his personal identity and that of the wider Vietnamese diaspora since the fall of Saigon in 1975. “My mum was affected by the rapid decolonisation of Vietnam following the French Indochina war,” he said. “My mum was born in Cambodia … with the rise of Pol Pot and the ethnic cleansing of Vietnamese people in Cambodia, they then fled to war-torn Vietnam. My parents were Vietnamese boat people … they fled Vietnam in 1981 and were interred in a refugee camp in Malaysia for several months before they were accepted into Australia, and I was born here.” Phuong Ngo will discuss his archive at the Substation, 1 Market Street, Newport, from 7pm on Thursday, May 12. Footscray mourns Dim Sim Jim By Benjamin Millar Footscray’s iconic Jim Wong Restaurant will live on as a legacy to its beloved founder, Jimmy Wong, who died last week. Tributes have been pouring in following the death of the cherished Footscray restaurateur, renowned across Melbourne for his kindness and his popular dim sims. Mr Wong, 75, died at 8am last Thursday surrounded by family. Wife Marianne Wong said her husband died as a result of head injuries sustained in a fall at the Barkly Street restaurant earlier in the week. Mrs Wong, who was married to him for almost 50 years, said Mr Wong was “fit as a fiddle” and his passing came as a shock. “He was healthier than a lot of people,” she said. “He still made his dim sims three days a week. He lived for Footscray. We had a chance to go other places and he said, ‘No way’. He was Footscray through and through his whole life.” The couple lived above the restaurant so Mr Wong could be on hand at all hours at the business he had run for 57 years since 1959. Mrs Wong said her husband was on his way to making the latest batch of dim sims last Monday when he tripped and fell down stairs. He was taken to hospital but never regained consciousness. Mrs Wong said his family members bid their farewells at his bedside last Thursday, and they were able to fulfil her husband’s wish of having his organs donated. “Jimmy was like that – he always wanted to help out in any way he could,” she said. “He was that kind of person.” Mr Wong hailed from Canton, China, arriving in Melbourne at the age of 13 and learning his craft from an uncle. His restaurant was a well-known haunt of sports stars, particularly his beloved Western Bulldogs.

Mrs Wong, a well-known figure at the restaurant, said she would work with her three children to keep the restaurant going. “It’s a bit hard for us, but we will get through and keep his name going for as long as we can,” she said.

Footscray mayor Cameron McDonald said the council was deeply saddened at the news of Mr Wong’s passing. “Jim was incredibly well-liked, respected and loved by all who knew him,” he said. “Footscray, and the wider western

community, has lost a legend. He will be greatly missed.” Mr Wong leaves behind wife Marianne, three children and five grandchildren. His funeral will be at Footscray’s Whitten Oval from 1.30pm on Thursday, May 12.

In all seriousness, I have grown up watching comedy on stage and on TV, and with so many great role models out there, it’s hard not to want to be involved in such a creative industry. What else do you enjoy doing with your time?

I write other things aside from jokes, such as song lyrics, raps, poetry and the odd article for my school magazine. I love singing and acting too, this year my school is performing West Side Story which I’m very excited to be a part of as Riff, the leader of The Jets. I love the friends I’ve made through acting and I find that the different disciplines of performing I’m involved with, complement one another. Athletics, and my part-time job at the Sun Theatre are also big parts of my life. At this stage, I’m just trying to do as many things as possible.

What’s your connection with Seddon? I’ve lived in Seddon since day one. The most quintessentially Seddon thing I can remember occurred during my primary school days. I would walk up Charles Street every Friday night to get fish ‘n’ chips and hire a movie from Gamon Video, while dad bought a bottle of wine. We also used to have an enormous lemon tree in the backyard, which we would harvest the lemons from to sell to the chip shop. While Seddon’s popularity has risen, it has kept its

local charm. There are so many great new shops popping up, new people visiting, new events to go to, while never becoming too big for its boots. What do you like best about living here? What could make it even better? One of my favourite things to do is look at the city lights from Charles Street. It’s one of the only suburbs with such a clear line of view into the city. Whenever there’s fireworks, it’s only

a matter of walking outside to watch them. I don’t know of many things that could improve honestly, we’re pretty much spoilt here. Has this area shaped who you are and if so how? Most definitely. I blame Seddon for my extreme laziness, since I’ve grown up never needing to walk more than a few hundred metres for something I needed. If you can’t find something in Yarraville,

West-Side Open was my first senior comedy competition. It gave me a tremendous confidence boost and it’s a great credential to put on the stand-up CV. I put many hours into crafting my jokes and the recognition from the audience voters meant the world to me. It was a great reward for effort. What’s something people would be surprised to find out about you? I haven’t found a date for my year 12 formal. I’ll probably just end up taking mum, but I honestly think I’d cramp her style. Maybe dad would be keen?

‘Ghosts’ mark our past Yarraville blogger and psychogeographer Nick Gadd has spent years walking around Melbourne exploring the history of ‘ghost signs’ – faded signage – on buildings. Psychogeography, a term coined by Marxist theorist Guy Debord in 1955, refers to the effect of a geographical location on people’s emotions. Gadd is among more than 80 authors who will appear at the Williamstown Literary Festival on June 18 and 19. Two years ago he started walking from Williamstown in an anti-clockwise ring around Melbourne, finding ghost signs and writing about them on his Melbourne Circle blog. “I’m a creative writer not a historian, so my project is really about using specific places as a starting point for writing, which may include writing about history, architecture, politics, fiction and poetry, whatever,” Gadd said. “It’s

about finding an oblique way into little quirky, lost bits of social history. “I’m not that interested in famous buildings or famous people . . . I’m more interested in an old milk bar rather than in Parliament House.” One part of history he discovered was an old greyhound racing track in Tottenham. “There was also a station between Sunshine and Tottenham called White City,” Gadd said. “It was there between about 1927 and 1959. “The greyhound track used to have things like monkeys riding greyhounds.” Nick Gadd will host Walking and Writing the Suburbs from 2-3pm on June 18. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir joins the fever, desperately seeking the perfect pho A Vietnamese eatery for Yarraville? A dose of cynicism is warranted, I reckon. For starters, Asian food in Yarraville is a very mixed bag – some good, some lacklustre, some already forgotten. What chance of a really fabulous bowl of pho in downtown Yarraville, away from Footscray, Sunshine or St Albans – where numbers and competition ensure very high standards? In the case of Friend or Pho, the pun in the name is even based on a mispronunciation. But a good sign is the gorgeous, larger-thanlife, hand-written menu on the joint’s Facebook page – it’s all in Vietnamese. But even then, banh mi is listed at $9. Whoa! That’s twice the going rate in Footscray. Happily, things take a delightful turn, dispelling our scepticism as soon as we enter and broach the price of that banh mi. The answers we get run like this … “It’s just really good! We make our own pickles, and it’s got our own pork crackling!” Even better, we soon learn that the sisters behind Friend or Pho – Anna Nguten (out front) and Chelsea Le (in the kitchen) – are lifelong, born-and-bred Yarravillians. About 15 years ago their parents ran a bakery on Anderson Street (corner of Buninyong Street, where the fancy cake-makers now live). Friend or Pho is done out in very cool cafe style. There’s seating inside, in the hallway and outside on the verandah. The menu proper runs through a tight line-up of mostly familiar dishes.

This is simply great Vietnamese food, as good as any in the west and way better than most. The waiting times are appropriate for such great food and prices – banh mi aside – are in the regular ball park. Beef pho ($12) is wonderful – and about medium size when compared to Footscray places that do the small-medium-large routine. The broth is terrific and a bit salty (just as I like it). And there’s a lot of beef in that bowl – sliced but cooked through, and brisket. Com tam (pork chop with broken rice, $13) is similarly excellent. All the porky bits display in-house care and handiwork. The meat loaf is peppery perfection and the pork chop the most tender and beautifully cooked we have had with this dish. Go ran, of six fried chicken ribs, costs $9 and can be padded out with rice for $4 to make a more complete meal. As with everything else we try at Friend or Pho, the ribs are state-of-the-art: crisp, hot and delicious. For $13, a few slices of cucumber or segments of tomato would bring this dish more into line with its fellow menu items in terms of portion size and value. Vegetarian pho ($12) is unlike any dish you’ll get at Footscray’s sole dedicated Vietnamese

vegetarian eatery, or at the Vietnamese temple in Braybrook – there’s little by way of starch here and no mock meat. Instead, the heft and texture is delivered by tofu and a super range of mushrooms – delightfully meaty in their own way. The broth is so flavoursome that I feel obliged to make sure it’s not made with chicken bones or some such. Nope. It’s made with the usual vegetables and shitake mushrooms.

Again, it’s simply wonderful! I reckon this will become known as one of Melbourne’s great vegetarian dishes. Another prediction: Friend or Pho is destined to be a hit. West ready for close-up An exploration of the refugee experience will light up the big screen in Footscray this Saturday. For the first time, the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival (HRAFF) arrives in Footscray to celebrate the stories of our newest Australians. The free Footscray Community Arts Centre (FCAC) event kicks off with a performance by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre’s music group, followed by a selection of short films from the festival’s 2016 line-up and a panel discussion. FCAC director and chief executive Jade Lillie said Melbourne’s west is a perfect example of an international community in a local context. “The west is a diverse place, with an arts scene that strives to reflect that, and in doing

so, presents us with incredible stories and experiences that resonate all around the world,” she said. Not only widening the possible cohort who may well study computer science … but also in design and creative arts, and other fields of endeavour yet to transpire. “Teaching kids to code is about opening their mind to a means to an end, not necessarily the end in itself.” As the 21st century celebrates its sweet sixteenth, it’s fascinating to imagine what the education sector will look like when the century’s 30th year ticks over. This year’s Education Week theme, “Technology. Create your future”, focuses on the importance of children engaging with technology throughout their education. Showing the community how the Department of Education and Training aims to make Victoria the Education State, hundreds of schools will have open days and exhibitions. Technology has assumed a hugely important place in schools, with teachers and students from prep to year 12 being exposed to what is essentially a constantly evolving revolution. Play music and take calls in the pool By Rod Easdown, The Age Are you a person who believes there’s only one thing more important than having music on tap for you and your friends while frollicking in the pool this summer … and that’s being able to make and take calls without getting out of the water? Well, I have good news. The waterproof Aquajam AJ2 Bluetooth speaker takes care of both tasks, and note that it’s described not as splash-proof or water-resistant but as waterproof. To a depth of one metre in fact, for 30 minutes. What better way to spend $100?

And the AJ2 comes with a circular screw mount for bicycle handlebars and an adhesive mount. The instructions warn against using the adhesive mount on the porous surfaces of surfboards (water underneath the adhesive reduces its grip until … bye-bye AJ2). There’s also a special note for skiers, both water and snow, and snowboarders: the flexing and vibrations of such devices can lead to the mount coming loose and … bye-bye AJ2 (and bye-bye warranty claims too). More stable surfaces, such as the prow of your kayak, are safer, and you can use this mount on the shower wall, allowing you to take calls in there between joining in with your favourite songs. Actually, the instruction booklet gets quite interesting when you wade into it. For example, did you know that “as water absorbs Bluetooth signals, the wireless range (10 metres in the dry) will lessen when the AJ2 comes

into contact with water”? You can maximise whatever range there is by having a clear line of sight between the transmitter and the speaker, which I guess rules out usage when the surf is fairly up at Bells Beach. But, if you must, the company also offers a $29 waterproof armband for your phone or player, which should ensure things go smoothly until

you go one way and your board goes another. When this happens, however, you will likely have things to think about ahead of music. The AJ2 is about the size of a drink can, only half again taller, and weighs about 425 grams. When chucked in the water, it floats speaker-side up, and this also means its inbuilt microphone for making and taking calls

is uppermost. Get a handle on where this is because it works best when you speak directly into it, and performance falls off sharply if you’re more than half a metre away. It’s close to the button you need to press to take a call anyway, so things prove to be quite intuitive. Pairing the device with your phone or player is dead easy – I had it playing within a few minutes of taking it from the box, having spent half of that time figuring out how to turn it on (don’t just press the power button, press and hold). The sound quality is what you’d expect from a speaker of this price, entirely unremarkable but adequate for the forgivingly non-fussy. If you’re into bass forget it, there’s very little here, but the mids and highs are quite nicely defined. If you’re an MP3 stalwart and can’t see any reason to upgrade to uncompressed music, this will suit you nicely. While the AJ2 can be quite entertaining for small groups, it doesn’t go anywhere near loud enough for a party. In fact, you may have trouble hearing it up the other end of a pool full of frolickers. But as long as you’re close enough and not intent on head banging, then the volume is acceptable, and the advantage of lower volume is 10 hours of music between charges. The charging is through a USB with the input at one end under a screw cap and then a tight-fitting rubber tab. This is an unconventional part of testing, but I know you’re asking the question, so: immersion reduces volume by about two-thirds, but only to a depth of about three centimetres. Deeper and the music stops entirely. Maybe it’s Bluetooth’s limit. Bring it back to the surface and play resumes, but only gets to where it was when the excess water is shaken out. Upshot? The AJ2 is completely ineffective at scaring off sharks. Even when playing Ice Cube.

North Footscray’s jaw-dropping nine-goal opening quarter that set the tone for Saturday’s 167-point mauling of Manor Lakes has been rated by co-coach Matt Walsh as up there with the best 30 minutes of football he has seen from his team in three years at the club. The Devils kicked into a strong breeze but it did not effect their slick ball movement, which left the home side gasping for air and staring an unassailable 50-point margin at quarter-time. “Our first quarter was probably the best quarter we’ve played in mine and [co-coach] Shaun’s [Borlase] three years,” Walsh said. “Nine goals into the breeze was a real highlight. “It was good footy to watch and really clean, so we know that’s what we can dish up.” North Footscray will head into the bye on top of the Western Region Football League division 2 ladder. The 32.20 (212) - 7.3 (45) score was impressive and the Devils have been averaging 32 goals per game over the past three weeks, but it is about to get a whole lot tougher after the break. They will meet Yarraville-Seddon, Glen Orden and Caroline Springs in consecutive weeks, the three teams most likely to be jostling for finals positions later in the season. “We haven’t really been challenged since

round two, so we’re looking forward to Yarraville-Seddon game and kind of seeing where we’re at,” Walsh said. “Obviously Caroline Springs was a challenge and Glen Orden in round one, but since then we’ve had three pretty convincing victories. “It’s really important to win these games as it gives you more of a chance to finish in a top two position and get a double chance. “You’ve got to beat the teams around you.” Continuity is the buzz word at North Footscray. The Devils are seeing the benefits this season of having a settled list over the Walsh-Borlase tenure. Their new additions have been calculated, filling areas of need, rather than a huge influx of players all at once. “We’ve kept our list together over the last couple of years and added some experience,” Walsh said. “They’re kind of playing for one another. “They realise we’re a live chance and you have to do all the little things to kind of go close to winning a flag.” North Footscray’s ability to mix and match its players is a huge asset. It is a game of cat and mouse for opposition bench coaches to keep up with all the moves. “Anyone can play anywhere in our team at the moment and that’s the exciting part about it,” Walsh said.

Who knows if it turns out to be a season-defining win. One thing I do know is that it was brilliant to watch. The Doggies take on the rejuvenated Melbourne this Sunday in what is the match of the round. Who would have thought that eight weeks ago?

Vikings hot for the top By Lance Jenkinson The future is now at Altona Lacrosse Club, with the Vikings banking on their current group of promising youngsters to take them back to Lacrosse Victoria’s top flight. Once promoted, the Vikings have no interest in making it a short stay as happened last time – this team is built for sustained success at the top level. Vikings president Mark Lewer said the last time the Vikings were in state league, they lacked the personnel to stay there. “We’re a much younger side now, so the goal is to get back into state league as soon as we can, and this time to stay there,” he said. In pursuit of that ambition, Altona looks to be a contender for the division 1 crown this season. The Vikings only loss so far has come in a golden-goal defeat against Williamstown. The team has an experienced leader in Alan Lewer, assistant coach for the Australian indoor team and Victoria.

Both of the Lewers – Mark is the under-17 coach – have found players with strong work ethics and eagerness to improve. “Once you’ve got the vast majority of the side turning up to training every week, the peer pressure gets stronger,” Mark said. “They want to be there … they don’t want to let their teammates down. “If they keep their attitude up and work hard, there’s no reason why we couldn’t get up [to state league] and stay there.” One of the keys to Altona’s success is centre Lachlan McDonald, who was recently named to represent Australia at under-19 level. He is a multi-sport talent who is also proficient in cricket and is a smart student with an engineering degree on his radar. Lacrosse could play a big role in both McDonald’s sports career and academic future. “He’s a very talented lacrosse player, but he’s also good at school and cricket, so he’s one of those lucky kids,” Mark said. “He wants to do an engineering degree, so

if he could get picked up by one of the colleges in the United States to do that on a scholarship with lacrosse, that would be fantastic.” In the short term, McDonald will be the central figure in Altona’s push for promotion. One of the best face-off exponents in the division, McDonald often gives his team first use of the ball. “He wins the ball out of the centre and gives us first use eight times out of 10,” Mark said. “We’ve got a talented side, so if you give us that much ball, we’ve got a good chance of winning.” Altona is home to seven teams at PJ Lynch Reserve but wants to continue to expand. “We’ve added another side this year, so we’ve got division 1, division 2, division 3, under-17s, under-13s and under-11s, and a women’s B-grade side,” Mark said. “But we always want to attract more players, whether new or experienced. “We’ve got good coaches, so we feel we can develop players to be the best they hope to be if they’re willing to put in the time.”

VU Western Spurs can take some positives from its meeting with unbeaten powerhouse Darebin Falcons in the Women’s VFL on Saturday, despite a 50-point loss. The Spurs have one of the youngest and most inexperienced sides in the competition. Footscray lost 6-0 to Greensborough. The Western Jets were ripped apart early by the Geelong Falcons in a 40-point loss in the TAC Cup at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Brilliant Gulls crush Tigers By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown gatecrashed Werribee Tigers’ first home match of the season with a 74-point demolition job at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday night. The Seagulls blew away the hosts from the 17-minute mark of the first quarter, booting 14 unanswered goals to leave the Tigers in a daze. It was one of the most remarkable patches of football you are ever likely to see between two VFL premiership contenders. “I can’t think of a better patch of football we’ve put together,” Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon told Star Weekly. “At the 17-minute mark, we hadn’t kicked a goal. From that point on, we kicked 14 straight without a reply from Werribee. “It was some of the best football we’ve played in my time at the club.” There is no shortage of contenders trying to knock Williamstown off their premiership perch this season. Some of the experts believed Werribee was at the head of the queue since beefing up their alignment with North Melbourne. Dixon conceded such an incredible run-on from his side against a quality outfit was “probably unexpected”, but he could tell the side was switched on in the rooms before the game. “They were near the top of the ladder for a reason, but we were a highly motivated group,” Dixon said. “The boys were keen and even though we got the win last week, a lot of players were looking to bounce back in their performances and as a team we were looking to bounce back. “We came out with real strong intent and pressure.” Onballer Michael Gibbons was scintillating for Williamstown. The Norm Goss Medal winner in last year’s grand final had 21 possessions and five clearances by half-time. A hard tag was applied to Gibbons in the second half and he still finished with more than 30 possessions. Slick Gators regain their bite By Lance Jenkinson Altona Gators snapped a worrying three-game losing streak with a 93-84 win over Craigieburn Eagles in Big V basketball men’s division 2 on Saturday night. The Gators improved their record to 3-4 with the win at Craigieburn Leisure Centre and face another must-win encounter away to Oakleigh (1-5) on Sunday. “That will be a reset point for us if we can get a win,” Gators coach Des Radoslovic told Star Weekly. “It would get us to .500 and we should be back to full strength.” Altona made a slow start to the match, and trailed by 10 points at quarter-time. A clear issue for the Gators was their ball handling, with 11 turnovers in the first period. They cleaned up their act and only coughed up the rock 11 more times for the remaining three quarters. “We just had a shocking first quarter,” Radoslovic said. “When you’re turning it over so much, it’s hard to get into a flow, so the offence wasn’t flowing as freely in the first quarter. “To the guys credit, they got back and played a pretty solid all-round game for the remaining three quarters.” All parts of Altona’s game began to click from the second quarter onwards. They finally got stuck in on defence, a key ingredient which had been lacking in recent losses. “A bit of a motto for us on defence is it’s a five-on-one mentality,” Radoslovic said. “When one guy from the opposition is on the ball, there are five active defenders ready to act on the ball. “We forced Craigieburn into a lot of tough shots and made their life harder.”

Having been stifled on offence in the first quarter, Altona burst to life on the offensive end, aided by some brilliant shooting from the three-point arc. The Gators hit seven threes in the second quarter alone and went 14 from 25 in the game. Joey Mausar was lethal from deep, draining four threes among his 26 points. Brent Radoslovic (three), Dogukan Elyazar and Patrick Green (two each) also hit multiple three-pointers. It was not only the finishing, but the build-up play that pleased the coach the most. “It wasn’t just somebody getting a hot hand and hitting really tough shots,” Radoslovic said. “We got a lot of good team shots with extra passes and getting teammates open.” Mausar and centre Tyson Burton were outstanding for the Gators. Mausar’s cake was his 26 points, but the cream on top was his four assists and three steals. Burton was happy to crash bodies inside the paint for an important 20 points and eight rebounds. Mausar (8 from 10) and Burton (8 from 8) shot a combined 16 from 18 from the free throw line. “Those guys were extremely efficient,” Radoslovic said. “They both scored in the 20s on minimal shots.” Meanwhile, Altona Gators were soundly beaten 94-61 by Blackburn Vikings in the Big V women’s division 2. A positive to come out of the loss was the performance of Alysha Carden-David, who had 24 points and 11 rebounds in the same week she scooped the April player-of-the-month award. Craig Bennett was named men’s youth league coach of the month after taking the young Gators to a 5-1 record in April.

By David Bonnici Hyundai seems to love a challenge. For years it has implored drivers to look beyond the badge when comparing the company to popular Japanese models. Now the king of small cars with its i30 and a strong competitor in the SUV market, the Korean car maker has decided to once again tackle prejudices by competing against established luxury European brands. I first test drove the Hyundai Genesis at it’s Australian launch in Canberra in 2014 and was really impressed by its solid presence, luxury and handling. But this time around, it was good to get more than just a few hours and to be without the influence of Hyundai’s generous hospitality and the novelty of driving around the nation’s capital and stunning rural surrounds. After a week driving this car in Melbourne’s western suburbs during the daily grind, I’m still impressed. Hyundai’s foray into the luxury car market isn’t just an automotive equivalent of applying cosmetics to a pig. This car is built from the ground up as a luxury car. It has the looks, refinement, luxury and safety features to more than match it with cars featuring an extra digit in their price tags. It looks great and it was really interesting to watch people trying to figure out exactly what it was. Inside The Genesis welcomes you into its plush interior

via its winged logo projected on to the ground at the foot of the front door. The welcome extends to the driver’s seat moving into position and a short musical serenading before you press the push-button start. The driver’s seat is really comfortable. Electronic settings include a four-way lumbar support for lower back and hips. The seat cushion moves independently to support your calves and the soft leather seats have heating and cooling. The headrests are soft and feel soothing after a hectic day. You can drive for a long time in this car before you feel fatigued. Rear-seat passengers are well looked after with sofa-like comfort and adjustable support and a centre fold-down armrest that allows them to control the entertainment system, air-conditioning and even the position of the front passenger seat to have more leg room. Thankfully, the driver has the option of locking, which saved me from having to endure my teenage daughters changing songs every minute. The back doors almost open to right angles to allow for easier access The interior itself is stately with quality fittings available in a range of colors and trims. The car I drove had a cream interior with walnut trim that looked airy thanks to the panoramic sunroof. Other interesting touches include a powered rear window blind that provides sun protection or privacy and manual blinds that you can manually pop up to shade the passenger door windows.

for the best. Despite being a big car with a big engine, fuel consumption wasn’t that bad. I averaged 10.2 litres per 100 kilometres on all kinds of roads and in all sorts of traffic conditions.

The dashboard is nicely laid out and the gauges look good. The trip computer is the same as in other Hyundai models. One thing that isn’t stock standard is the multimedia and navigation system, featuring a 9.2-inch high-definition touchscreen, and satellite navigation featuring live traffic updates. There’s also 360-degree views to help you park. The Lexicon surround-sound system is epic, pumping out your favorite tunes through 17 speakers. The boot is big, so there’s no issues with this car being used for airport runs. The drive On the road, the Genesis feels incredibly smooth and road noise is really low, though the sound insulating windows do rob you of the nice growl the 3.8-litre V6 makes when you floor it. Acceleration is great and there are paddle shifts if you feel like a bit of sporty driving though I was more than content to drive in auto. Put your foot down and it goes like a beast. I’d love to try the new V8 version, not that the V6 is lacking in power. I like the head-up display that shows speed, cruise control settings, displays if cars are in your blind spot on either side, warns you if you stray over the white line and flashes red if it thinks you’re at risk of colliding with the car in front. While it isn’t built in Australia, Hyundai tested the Genesis in Australian conditions for a couple of years so it’s introduction here wasn’t just a matter of driving it off a ship and hoping

Safety When released in 2014, the Genesis had the highest ANCAP safety rating of any car to be sold in Australia with a total score of 36.88 out of 37. This was due to the high-tensile steel shell, nine airbags and a suite of electronic safety wizardry including blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, radar cruise control and autonomous emergency braking. The Genesis comes with three option packages – Genesis, Genesis with Sensory Pack and Genesis with Ultimate Pack. The Ultimate Pack, which I test drove, has everything described above, while some of the luxury items aren’t in the other two. The base model is also without some of the electronic safety features though it shares the same high ANCAP rating. The Hyundai Genesis continues to surprise people who were unaware Hyundai made cars at this level. While it’s up against the likes of the Lexus and BMW 5 Series, I think it will come into its own when Holden stops making the locally produced Caprice. Hyundai had resisted marketing the Genesis as a separate luxury brand as Toyota did with Lexus. But that’s all set to change, so it will be interesting to see if the company will apply this luxury and quality to smaller cars and SUVs, as we see in the Lexus range. On the other hand, it would be interesting to see this in a less luxurious version to fill the void when the Falcon and Commodore become history. Prices start from around $65,000 for the base model Genesis to just under $90,000 for the Ultimate pack, which is almost $20,000 cheaper than the BMW 528i despite having more features.
