The rules are aimed at ensuring residents have “a reasonable opportunity to a car parking space in proximity to their premises”, while balancing increased parking demands due to higher-density residential development, a rise in car ownership, more rail commuters seeking all-day parking and higher demand near shopping and activity centres. Ms Beldie said her family was far from unique, with many people living with their parents longer in the face of high rental and property costs. “This is a well-documented social phenomenon,” she said. She said she understood the need for permit guidelines but questioned a lack of flexibility to consider individual circumstances.

Maribyrnong council acting director of planning services Steven Lionakis said there were no exceptions or exemptions to the rules. “Issuing permits over and above the allowable number would make the policy untenable.” Mr Lionakis said a review of the policy considered at a December 15 council meeting confirmed the maximum number of permits to be issued per household. “The number of available permits ensures all residents have a reasonable opportunity, but no guarantee, of a car parking space in proximity to their premises,” he said. “There may be times when residents have to leave their vehicle a distance away from home but within an unrestricted area to avoid penalties.” The next policy review is due in June 2017. 1219971-HM10-16

Maribyrnong council has defended its strict parking permit policy after a Footscray family claimed it faces being split by inflexible restrictions. The policy limits to two the number of permits available for any residence in the council-designated ‘Footscray zone’. Newell Street resident Lauren Beldie says the council’s strict limit means her three children are being forced to park blocks away from home or run the risk of racking up fines for parking without a valid permit. Their only other alternative, she says, would be to move out of the family home. Ms Beldie said her three children were of driving age

and needed cars to undertake work and study, while she and her husband also needed private transport to reach their work as teachers in western suburbs schools. “The whole street and surrounding streets have parking restrictions,” she said. “You would really have to park a long way away or my children will have to continually move their cars. We don’t really have any alternatives; the council hasn’t been helpful at all. “My daughter has already been fined and it will keep happening if they park anywhere around here.” Ms Beldie said the family was previously entitled to four permits before the number was halved when the council implemented its new residential parking permit policy in 2014. 1182408-CG18-15

Hotel, apartment blazes keep firefighters busy flames from spreading to neighbouring homes and businesses. A community warning advised local residents to close windows and turn off airconditioning because of the smoke. Ten appliances responded to the incident and the fire was declared under control at 11.49pm. It was deemed to be suspicious and the scene was handed over to Victoria Police for investigation. On Monday, firefighters battled to contain a fire that tore through the kitchen of Footscray’s

Station Hotel. A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said the fire broke out soon before noon while a chef was cooking at the hotel’s award-winning restaurant. The chef escaped without injury. Fire crews using four appliances took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. The kitchen suffered heavy damage while the roof space and apartments above the kitchen sustained smoke damage. Tree vandals strike again By Goya Dmytryshchak Tree vandals have struck again in Hobsons Bay, destroying six banksias on the Williamstown foreshore over the Easter long weekend. The established trees were snapped in half and ripped from their stakes at Cyril Curtain Reserve, between Cole and Thompson streets. Hobsons Bay council spent about $180,000 on planting street trees last financial year and another $10,000 replacing vandalised trees after repeated attacks at Williamstown Botanic Gardens and other locations. Williamstown’s Bonnie Gelman said she did not believe the newly destroyed banksias would have obscured anyone’s bay views, but she added beachfront residents had differing opinions on whether they wanted trees on the foreshore. “The trees are an emblem of a community that cares about nature and about our natural environment, and to have someone wilfully destroy those trees is a terrible thing,” she said. “It’s a great insult to the people who have put time and effort into planting them. “People who live along the Esplanade have different opinions on whether they want to look out to trees or just onto the blue bay. “A number of us up our end said, ‘Yes, we think it’s an excellent idea to have some native trees, and the banksias were a good choice because they have a nice open form and attractive flowers. And none of the people who live across from where they’ve been planted objected to them.” Mayor Peter Hemphill labelled the latest vandalism “thoughtless, sad and really disappointing”. He said the trees would be replaced and additional trees planted with protective cages. “These acts of vandalism are calculated and, unfortunately, seem to be on the rise with several parks and gardens targeted in the past 12 months,” Cr Hemphill said. “These trees would have been valuable assets to the area, providing shade, adding to neighbourhood character and creating habitat to birds and other creatures.” Tree vandalism can be reported to the council on 9932 1000.

The family of slain Altona North father, Roger Bertocci, has been left “disgusted” after a memorial seat installed in his honour was vandalised. The wooden seat with a dedicated plaque was unveiled at GJ Hosken Reserve last December on the 12-month anniversary of his death. Mr Bertocci, 46, was fatally stabbed about 200 metres from his Knapp Street home after trying to help a pregnant woman being attacked. He left behind his wife, Helen, and their daughters, Ashlee, 15, and Brylee, age two. His accused killer, Jonathon Sporton, 22, this month pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court to murdering Mr Bertocci. Ms Bertocci said she noticed planks had been pulled off the seat last month. “There are no words,” she said. “Something pretty sacred has been vandalised. “I think, blatantly, it’s disgusting because it’s a memorial. “It should be valued … it shouldn’t be tampered with. “It’s disrespectful.” Hobsons Bay council and Altona Rotary jointly funded the seat and planted a tree to honour Mr Bertocci’s sacrifice and as a symbol that the community rejected men’s violence against women. A suspicious blaze has destroyed a West Footscray apartment, while another fire has torn through Footscray’s popular Station Hotel. Firefighters were called to the Barkly Street, West Footscray fire at 11pm on Friday after neighbours reported seeing thick smoke billowing from the home and tried to put the fire out using garden hoses. Hospital cuts spark closure fears By Goya Dmytryshchak A petition to save Williamstown Hospital’s emergency department has been started, as the state government heads to the High Court to try to keep $73 million in funding Victoria must repay the Commonwealth. The federal government says Victorian hospital activity was incorrectly reported, and that the state was overpaid. Federal Gellibrand MP Tim Watts started the petition calling on the federal government to reverse hospital funding cuts after being

advised by Western Health that it would be forced to close its emergency department. “Melbourne’s west is growing; we need to ensure access to healthcare and emergency services keeps pace with that growth,” he said. “Closure of any emergency department will just put more pressure on other busy emergency departments in Melbourne’s west.” Western Health’s acting executive operations director Christine Neumann said nearly $5 million had been ripped out of their budget. “The flow-on effects of the Commonwealth funding cuts led the Victorian government

to recently request information from health services on how they could find very substantial financial savings in the remaining quarter of this financial year,” she said. “In Western Health’s case, this amounted to almost $5 million dollars. “To find savings of this magnitude in only three months would require extreme cost cutting measures,” Ms Neumann said. “The potential range of options put forward by Western Health illustrate quite clearly how severe the impacts would be. Western Health does not intend to implement these

measures due to their harsh flow-on effect and we request that the Commonwealth restores the funding cuts in the best interests of patients.” Victorian Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the loss of $73.2 million could soon cause the closure of Williamstown Hospital’s emergency department. She plans to launch legal action in the High Court to prevent this. Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley said it was ultimately a matter between Victoria and the administrator at the moment.

A little extra care for mum Volunteers at the Williamstown Hospital opportunity shop are helping mothers of newborns at Sunshine under a new campaign called ‘From one Mum to Another’. Volunteers have been working with midwives to ensure blankets, clothes and other items are given to mothers who have difficulty providing for their babies. Now, the op shop is collecting care packs for the mums themselves – in time for Mother’s Day on May 8. People can drop off small care packs in a toiletry bag, small box or basket, or wrapped in plastic. These could include items such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, hairbrush, soap, moisturiser or deodorant. Nicky Cooper, from the op shop, said people are also being asked to include a personal note to the mother. “One of the most important ideas behind

‘From one Mum to Another’ is that this is a personal donation,” she said. “We have seen how touched the mothers are … and we want them to know the community cares.” Sunshine Hospital midwife Carolyn Barker said it would be nice for mums themselves to receive a gift. “It was breaking our hearts when we had mothers leaving the Sunshine Hospital’s maternity unit with a gorgeous newborn baby, yet with little ability to buy the basic clothing and bedding a newborn needs,” she said. “We thought it would be lovely, if around Mother’s Day, we were also able to give the mothers a little something.” Donations can be made until the end of April at the op shop at 47 Ferguson Street, Williamstown, or at Sunshine Hospital op shop. Man charged on $13m drug haul By Goya Dmytryshchak A Maidstone man has been charged with multiple counts of drug importation after the seizure of LSD valued about $13 million. The 39-year-old man was arrested when officers from the Altona North divisional response unit and Taskforce Icarus raided addresses in Maidstone and Tottenham on Wednesday Taskforce Icarus, which includes investigators

from the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and Customs, was established to target people using international mail and air cargo systems for criminal activity within Victoria. An average of 600,000 air cargo consignments arrive in Australia each week. The arrested man was investigated under Operation Spores, which started after Border Force officers detected a number of incidents of commercial quantities of LSD being imported.

He appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday and was bailed on a $250,000 bond to appear in the same court on July 7. Strict bail conditions include reporting to police and a curfew. Superintendent Stuart Bateson said Victoria Police had worked closely with other agencies to interrupt the supply of dangerous drugs to the community. “On this occasion we seized a commercial

quantity of LSD, valued at approximately $13 million,” he said. “We will continue to target anyone responsible for importing and distributing illegal drugs.” Superintendent Bateson encouraged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or go online at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au. The maximum penalty for importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug is life imprisonment.

Creative young people are being invited to shine in a competition being run for National Youth Week. Maribyrnong council is hosting the competition, calling for entries in the form of writing, drawing and photography. Workshops are being held as part of the Phoenix Youth Services school holiday program, helping young people create written, drawn and photographic works to enter in the competition. Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said young people made an important contribution to the community. “The National Youth Week Art Competition is the perfect way to highlight what young people add to our city,” he said. ‘No comment’ on river body review

Victoria Police has completed a review of the investigation into the 2011 death of Michael Atakelt. Mr Atakelt’s body was found in the Maribyrnong River on July 17. In 2014, the state coroner handed down an open finding into the death. A police spokeswoman said the review was conducted by an experienced homicide detective but Victoria Police was unable to comment further on its findings. She said police would fully investigate any new information or evidence that arose.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has granted a permit for a 30-dwelling, three-storey apartment block at 25-27 Champion Road, Williamstown North. Westie cyclists waiting By Benjamin Millar Inner-west cyclists are demanding that a greater focus on cycling safety be included in state and local government budgets to be released next month. Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay cyclists will take their message to the streets on Thursday morning to drum up pressure on the state government to honour its $100 million bikefunding election commitment. Concerned cyclists will spread the message at the Westgate Bike Punt jetty in Spotswood and on the south-west side of Footscray’s Shepherd Bridge from 7-9am. Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland, who is backing the action through her Bike West community campaign, said Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay residents had a surprising lack of safe bicycle routes given the area’s proximity to the city. “The Andrews government was elected on a commitment to invest $100 million in new, dedicated bike and walking paths,” she said. “Almost 18 months later, not one dollar has been spent. Cyclists have no new paths and are no safer.” Key missing links include Dynon Road to Hopkins Street, a Footscray to Highpoint link, Kororoit Creek Trail completion, and connection between the Federation and Bay trails. Ms Hartland said the thousands of trucks on inner-west streets made safe cycling options even more important, and councils could also do more. A spokesman for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the state government remained committed to improved cycling infrastructure. “We’re providing vital cycling infrastructure such as the Shepherds Bridge upgrade that

will see a new dedicated bridge for cyclists and pedestrians over the Maribyrnong River in Footscray, completion of the Federation trail and extension of the Westgate Punt ferry service,” he said. “We’re speaking with local communities about the $100 million Safer Cyclists and Pedestrians Fund so we can deliver the right infrastructure.” The spokesman said the government was

working with Hobsons Bay council to develop a proposal to complete the Kororoit Creek Trail. The government and Transurban would talk to the community this month about plans for completing the Federation Trail and other opportunities to improve cycling facilities. On Thursday, the cyclists will distribute postcards calling on the Premier to act promptly.

Market banks on rent returns Three adjoining bank freeholds at Williamstown go under the hammer next month for a combined asking price of more than $10 million. The properties at 48-50 and 52-56 Douglas Parade are leased to branches of the Commonwealth Bank, the ANZ and the Bank of Melbourne. The asking price is $4 million-plus for the Commonwealth Bank building and $6 million-plus for the ANZ and Bank of Melbourne property. Fitzroys real estate associate James Gregson said although the properties were being auctioned separately, he wouldn’t be surprise if one buyer purchases both. “These properties are truly a strategic and irreplaceable investment holding.” The property at 48-50 Douglas Parade has a land area of 312 square metres and a 240 square metre building. The Commonwealth Bank signed a new seven-year lease here, returning $169,033 per year plus GST and outgoings. The property at 52-56 Douglas Parade is on 638 square metres with a building of 500 square metres, consisting of two shops. It is offered with a new seven-year lease to ANZ and six-year lease to the Bank of Melbourne, with a combined rent of $269,037 a year plus GST and outgoings. Old guard dog cleared for duty By Benjamin Millar A Yarraville business says it has been flooded with abusive calls and death threats after being criticised on social media over the condition of a guard dog on its premises. A series of Facebook posts last week alleged a German shepherd kept at the warehouse was being “starved and neglected” by its owners. One woman initiated a “rescue” attempt of the 18-year-old dog early on Thursday morning but posted on Facebook that she left feeling scared after being threatened. The business’ general manager Jane de Sousa

denied the woman had been threatened, saying the woman had a history of throwing food over the fence and making unfounded accusations about the treatment of the dog guarding the business. “She called the owners every F-word under the sun and said she would come and get them,” Ms de Sousa said. “There is nothing wrong with the dog. The vet came out, the RSPCA came out, the council came out. This is just an old dog.” She said the woman’s “followers” had been phoning up and wishing death and suffering upon the business owners.

Ms de Sousa said the dog received regular food but would receive more meat in future following consultation with a vet. RSPCA Victoria senior inspector Simon Primrose said RSPCA inspectors attended the site on Thursday with Maribyrnong council officers to inspect the dog’s housing arrangements and assess its health and welfare. “Following the inspection, the owner was issued with instructions for the dog to be assessed by a veterinarian,” he said. “This is still an open and ongoing investigation.” Maribyrnong planning services director Nigel Higgins said animal management

officers joined RSPCA inspectors following a complaint about a malnourished dog. “As a result of their inspection and an assessment by the RSPCA officer, the dog was found to be in good condition and being well looked after by the owners,” Mr Higgins said. “There was no sign of malnutrition, mistreatment or neglect of the one German shepherd located at the address.” Mr Higgins said the dog was found to be “light in weight and shabby”, but that was due to its age. The woman who initiated the complaints did not respond to requests for comment.

Kids do it for mum A fundraising idea at a Maidstone kindergarten suits the creative youngsters to a T. Children at Dobson Kindergarten in Maidstone have created their very own artwork designs that have been screen printed onto cotton tea towels. The Mother’s Day fundraiser features individual handprints and drawings by children and staff at the kindergarten. Turning point for family violence By Benjamin Millar The lead organisation tackling violence against women in Melbourne’s west has welcomed the findings of the Royal Commission into Family Violence. Women’s Health West chief executive Robyn Gregory said there was still a long road ahead with finer details to be ironed out, but the report tabled in State Parliament last Wednesday marked a turning point in combating family violence. “The findings of the Royal Commission are really comprehensive,” she said. “It’s absolutely clear they have listened, sifted through and

understood what has been told to them by service providers and individual women.” Dr Gregory said the state government should be commended on its commitment to implement all 227 report recommendations. She believes the report offers a blueprint that can outlast the political cycle, enabling a long-term focus on strategies to not only deal with existing violence but focus on prevention. Footscray-based Women’s Health West had a 30 per cent increase in family violence referrals from Victoria Police during July to December last year. They rose to almost 1000 per month. “The demand for crisis responses is already through the roof because resources haven’t

met the growing demand,” Dr Gregory said. “I’m really pleased they have recognised there needs to be a second funding stream for primary prevention of violence so that this isn’t competing with response services. “Primary prevention requires different strategies, expertise and action, and this has been recognised by the commission. “ The state government has said it will boost early intervention services, provide more crisis accommodation, and establish 17 safety hubs statewide. Dr Gregory said the hubs were a welcome idea that put the safety of women and children front and centre. She said the report had been welcomed by

services working with women with disability, but more work needed to be done for culturally and linguistically diverse communities, such as providing interpreters. Premier Daniel Andrews vowed that the state government would change the culture that had allowed family violence to flourish. “Our work begins today to overhaul our broken family violence system from the bottom up.” Prevention of Family Violence Minister Fiona Richardson said it was time to create a new system giving victims and survivors the support they needed and helping prevent violence. “We need lasting generational reform,” she said.

Action called on festival The west’s premier film festival is back this month with a flood of screenings and events. This year’s Setting Sun Film Festival attracted 60 entries, creating plenty of work for festival director Anna Bourozikas as she tackles the task of whittling them down to the festival finalists. Ms Bourozikas said short films by experienced indie filmmakers, as well as emerging local talent, will be screened over four days at the iconic Sun Theatre in Yarraville. There’ll also be a special ‘Kid’s Day’ at Footscray town hall. “The entries are incredibly diverse – from sci-fi to a period drama, quality documentaries to animation,” she said. “And of course, there’s plenty of the quirky comedy Setting Sun-goers expect from their festival.” The short-film festival, which began in 2013,

attracts local filmmakers alongside entries from further afield. Several of the short-listed films have made a splash at other festivals, while others will enjoy their big-screen debut at Yarraville. An opening night event kicks off at 7pm, Thursday, April 14. The festival will include a women’s program and the kids’ day. Sunday night’s screening will be followed by a presentation of the Sunnies, where up to $5000 of prizes up are for grabs for the festival’s best films. Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said the council looked forward to hosting ‘Kid’s Day’ at the town hall as part of Festival City events. Tickets and details: www.settingsun.com.au.

MY PLACE She came to Australia as an “enemy alien”, so Williamstown’s Joan Lynn is passionate about asylum seekers and children in detention. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. Back in Christmas 1985, early ’86, I was looking after a friend’s apartment down on Nelson Place and another friend, who was visiting, said: “You know, it would be like having a holiday here for every day of your life if you lived here”. We actually found this house which hadn’t been lived in for about 20 years and it was an amazing price – this was back in ’86 – so for $50,000 we got this house.” Can you tell me about the volunteering you do?

often think that we don’t know who the enemy are … we were escaping Hitler but because we came from Austria, we were seen as enemy aliens. I also am very concerned about climate for my grandchildren’s world. What do you love about Williamstown? The village feel about it, of course. It’s a peninsula. It provides such a lovely sense of the sea, which is something I really love. My sense is that it’s a very friendly place. I came from over the other side, as we call it, and to be near the sea has always been a passion for me.

For the last 14 years, I’ve been volunteering at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. I’ve done a hell of a lot of volunteering – telephone counselling, etcetera. I still go two days a week because I really want to be involved in that area … it’s great for me as an 80-year-old to be with a lot of different age groups. I am the Gellibrand contact for the Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children. We advocate to get the children out of detention, which destroys lives, whether on or offshore. We strongly believe all children deserve to be safe.

Obviously, human rights. As a small child, we came here as refugees and we were extremely lucky that my parents actually got a visa. We were extremely lucky despite the fact that we were seen as enemy aliens for quite some time. I

I have two – friends and I alternate between Choks Pot and Novel Kitchen in Ferguson Street. We enjoy the food and we enjoy the lovely warmth and friendship that we get there from the owners, as well.

It’s interesting because in the time I’ve been in this house every house in this street has changed or been renovated in some way. And that’s OK – what I’d hate to lose is the historic part of the sea port … I am concerned about the new development at the end of our street [Port Phillip Woollen Mill development]. I guess people aren’t going to come just with bikes – they are going to have their cars. It is something that has consequences that are known and some that could be quite unforeseeable.

Action starts early here Williamstown schoolchildren will help victims of Cyclone Winston after setting up a special service agency with help from the local Rotary Club. Rotary Club of Williamstown president Kathy Roberts said her club sponsored the formation of an EarlyAct club for year 5 pupils at the newly opened Sandridge School. For students aged five to 13, EarlyAct encourages them to be caring and helpful, and teaches them leadership skills to tackle problems within their school, local and global communities, she said. “For their fundraising project, they chose buying a shelterbox kit, to be sent to Fiji to help the people there who lost their homes in the recent cyclone,” Ms Roberts said. “They had already raised around $250, but

on the day of the launch of their club, they managed to crowd raise another $1100, which is an amazing effort. “Involvement in an EarlyAct club teaches values such as caring, respect, empathy, responsibility, tolerance, citizenship, compassion, friendship and leadership … to recognise the dignity and worth of each individual.” Principal Dr Jeanne Shaw said she was in awe of what the year 5 class had achieved. “What a wonderful statement has been made about working together to achieve great things,” Dr Shaw said. “Our school community will be all the richer because this is citizenship learning in action.”

FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? NG: Competent, with occasional flashes of ‘where did that come from?’ If I find a recipe I like the look of, I’ll give it a crack. I don’t get too fancy during the week, but if we’re up at my mum’s place for a lazy weekend, I get adventurous. Sometimes a trip to the fruit and vegie shop will prompt an idea. A pomegranate. What can I do with that? That’s something I got from my dad, Don. He had an amazing ability to create great tasting food seemingly out of thin air. And his sauces! He’d get a faraway look in his eye, head into the kitchen and come up with the perfect accompaniment to whatever we were having. He was born and bred in Williamstown. His mum cooked some great Scottish dishes, which she passed down to Dad. My grandparents settled in Williamstown in the early 20s and the area was known as Little Scotland for a long time. Sailors from home would turn up on their doorstep and nothing but Gaelic was spoken. Having reminders of Scotland was important. Wee drams of whiskey (or more) and they’d be ‘back home’. FB: What is your signature dish? NG: I like to mix up the menu. I have a basic tomato pasta sauce recipe (onions, tinned tomatoes, garlic, basil, salt) and from there, I’ll add salami, olives, bacon, seafood or whatever else might take my fancy. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? NG: There was a great place on Toorak Road that would do this amazing Moreton Bay bug mornay that was to die for. That’s on my list. Dad’s mushroom soup. He also made baked spinach dumplings that would provoke heated arguments over who’d get the last one. Mum’s roast – she detests cooking, but she is brilliant at roasts. Home-made pesto sauce. Home-made dips. Greek salad. Crabs or crayfish. Oh, and something my youngest and her ‘grand-Don’ created, called Delicious Surprise – shortbread dough sandwiched with raspberries or strawberries, and baked. FB: What is your favourite food? NG: Ye old fish and chips have a place in my culinary heart. When I was a little kid, there was a fish and chip shop on Douglas Parade in Williamstown that used to get day-old loaves of bread, hollow out the inside and put your fish and chips inside! So, you’d eat your Friday night dinner and then have the salty-vinegary-fishy bread goodness. And who can go past the traditional lamb/pork roast with all the trimmings? My uncle John was involved with the Williamstown Football Club back in the days when you followed either the VFA or the VFL. A hot pie down at the Seagulls ground was the answer to all that ailed you. My aunty Annie’s trifle is another favourite. There would literally be fights among us over who got the biggest serve. FB: What is your favourite drink? NG: Coffee. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? NG: I’d love to have one more meal with my Dad. We lost him to a particularly aggressive form of lung cancer in 2013 and I miss him every day. I adore Stephen Fry and think he’d be great to have at any dinner table. Neil Davis – he was an amazing journo. Paul Keating – I love his turn of phrase. And Dawn French because she’s made me laugh for years. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? NG: Keep the bench clear. And never, ever admit that wasn’t how it was meant to turn out.

They’ve called Newport home for a long time, so when Graeme Medew and wife Carleen (in their 70s) talked about downsizing, they knew they wanted to stay in their familiar patch. Carole Levy talks to Graeme Medew.

raeme says they’d had their eye on Paine Street land, close to their current neighbourhood, for a few years, waiting to see what kind of development would proceed.

“It must have been karma,” declares Graeme, who still had plenty of questions before the deal was sealed. “We got our ideal spot, just by chance, but it was meeting CBRE’s consultant Emir Habibovic that calmed any lingering fears of taking the leap.

“We saw a couple of project ideas knocked back by planners, but The Mill development got the green light,” he explains, “which, now we’ve experienced the utter professionalism of the developers, isn’t surprising. “Carleen and I always loved the idea of buying in Paine Street. We knew its location was just right for us – quiet, but so close to the waterfront. So the day Carleen inadvertently drove past The Mill’s open day last month and saw the crowds, she pulled in. “She put down a deposit virtually on the spot.” Graeme says it was a hugely emotional decision to move, let alone buy what would probably be their final home off the plan.

“I’ve worked in sales and marketing with a big national outfit for many years so I know what a good salesman looks like. But the level of professionalism shown by Emir was exceptional. He came to our home, answered every question we had, didn’t rush us at all and seemed to have a just great understanding of the niggling fears of an older , we were buying couple facing change. He even stepped out spaces to take us to see if our furniture . would fit. I remain very impressed.”

“My son, who lives in Stockholm, has no concerns about buying off the plan, but we’d never done this before, it was new turf altogether. We needed to be certain we weren’t getting caught up in the excitement, especially when people were buying units left, right and centre at the open day. We didn’t want to miss out but nor did we want to be rushed into making such a major decision. “We weren’t just downsizing, we were buying a lifestyle to take us into our senior years. None of our grandchildren wanted us to move from where we are now because it’s always been ‘grandpa’s and grandma’s place’. “But I won the grandkids over by telling them that Grandpa now owns a park. Our family loves The Mill so that was a big stress relief.”

It’s got an earthiness and a high-end approach that I feel sure will hold its value. It’s not going to clog a small, peaceful street with cars either because all units have stacker car parking. SPORT VU Western nails a proud victory VU Western Spurs capped a historic weekend for women’s football in Victoria with a 37-point win over Geelong Magpies in the first ever round of the VFL women’s competition at Osbourne Park in Geelong on Saturday. It was a particularly significant occasion for the Spurs, who faced the real prospect of extinction only two years ago. The Spurs have re-branded for this season, changed their colours, moved to a more central location in Footscray and brought in exciting new recruits to ensure they would be part of the new VFL women’s league, which was launched ahead of a proposed

national competition starting next year. Spurs coach Debbie Lee told Star Weekly the struggles of recent seasons were not lost on the players who pulled on jumpers on Sunday. “They’re very proud to play state league and they certainly respect the competition,” she said. “We’ve got so many new players but they understand the journey the Spurs have been on.” The Spurs set up their victory with a four goals to one opening term. Ainslie Kemp booted three goals, while

Alexandra Fato, Kylie Nicolaci and Alexandra Quigley kicked two each. The spread of goalkickers was heartening for Lee. “If you look at the past two seasons, we haven’t kicked goals,” Lee said. “Our forward line worked really well.” The Spurs will stay on the road in round two, meeting the Eastern Devils at Mulgrave Reserve. Picked ahead of Aaron Finch for the first Sheffield Shield game, he made history, scoring two centuries for the match – a feat never achieved before in that competition. While it is early days yet for the 24-year-old, many cricket scribes are sure he is destined for higher honours.

Roosters stem the tide By Lance Jenkinson After conceding 12-first quarter goals and being held scoreless, it was anyone’s guess as to how much West Footscray would end up losing its WRFL division 2 season opener to Albanvale at Robert Bruce Reserve on Saturday. A conservative estimate would have been more than 200 points but there would have been willing backers for a 300-plus margin. But the Roosters avoided further embarrassment, hanging tough for the remaining three quarters and stemming the tide to eventually lose by 152. A 25-goal loss is never an ideal way to start a season but this was a starting point for the Roosters in their bid to put their off season woes behind them. In conceding just eight second-half goals and finishing the game with 12 scoring shots of their own, the Roosters showed coach Shane Lucas that his men will provide a fight no matter how dire the circumstances. “Three weeks ago, there was only 10 of us on the track and we didn’t have a coach,” Roosters playing assistant coach Kane Liossis told Star Weekly Weekly.

“Coming from there to now, there were 22 there yesterday and a few blokes that couldn’t play as well – to get out there and have a real crack, not lose our cool and play to the end, it was a good sign. “Obviously, we’re aware that we have a long way to go, but we’ll keep working hard.” West Footscray had a well-publicised mass exodus of players from its grand final side last season. There were some who felt the Roosters’ days might be numbered. But the club avoided termination at the 11th hour, gathering enough players to make up a senior side for the opening round. Liossis conceded it was a tough grind when his side was at times powerless to halt the Cobras from piling on the pain. “There’s rumours going around saying that we’re done and we’re closing the doors,” Liossis said. “We lost on the weekend but we’re still there – we’ve got players and we’re pushing to get a few more players so we can get the second side up. “It was hard but we’re aware of the situation we’ve got for the year so we’ll stick fat and keep having a crack.”

Against Albanvale, the Roosters turned only two of their 12 scoring shots into goals. That was a paltry reward for the tireless efforts of captain Nick Parker, centre half-back/ ruck Matthew Hilton and onballer/half-back Jimmy Pham. was sad to hear of the passing of Jack Borlase last week. Jack was a legend of the North Footscray Football Club, where his grandson Shaun (‘Bazza’) is now co senior coach. Jack was a life member of North and the WRFL and held just about every position in his many years of service to the Red Devils. The club named its pavilion after him to honour his contribution. Footscray City Gymnastics Club has been named Gymnastic Victoria’s “large club of the year” for 2015. Based in West Footscray, the club has more than 950 members and 40 dedicated coaches. Club programming assistant Georgia Cardillo described the award as a huge achievement. “It was a real honour just to be in the running for an award like that, especially being a non-for-profit club,” she said. “It’s good because all our programs are for the benefit of the community.” Footscray City’s point of difference is that it offers both recreational and competitive programs. It runs classes to cater for junior age groups right through to seniors. Some clubs have a win-at -all-costs mentality, while Footscray City’s motto is “skills for life”. “We’re a community-based club so not all our gymnasts compete; it is a choice,” Cardillo said. “What we focus on here is building people’s confidence and letting them grow in character … so their social skills are developing with their physical, gymnastics skills. “With our junior programs, we focus more on the skills for life.

“Some clubs do competition only, others don’t compete at all. “Here, we offer programs for beginners, programs for recreational gymnasts and programs for competitions.” In an Olympic year, interest in gymnastics will continue to grow and the demands will overwhelm some smaller clubs. Footscray City’s West Footscray venue is well equipped to absorb a swell in numbers when the Rio Olympics start. “We’re so lucky to have such an amazing venue,” Cardillo said. “It’s really big and we can utilise the space with so many classes going on at once. “The club is constantly growing … each year and each term, we’re getting more numbers in.” Footscray City’s greatest strength is its coaches. The club boasts a dedicated team of coaches with varying skill sets to ensure no age group or skill level is overlooked. “Our coaching team together won us that award,” Cardillo said. “It’s great having coaches who can take both classes from six months old up to our adult gym classes. “All our coaches are fully qualified. We’re always updating accreditations and workshops to be able to deliver the best programs we can for our members.”

Williamstown is primed to hit the ground running in the new VFL season after a perfect three victories from three pre-season outings. The triple treat was completed on Saturday when the Seagulls beat a strong Sandringham Zebras side by 22 points in front of their home fans at Burbank Oval. Sam Dunell booted three goals for the Seagulls, with two each kicked by Anthony Anastasio, Jake Owen and Ayce Cordy. Promoted Altona City still climbing Newly promoted Altona City has left Sunbury United shell-shocked after thrashing it 4-1 in the FFV men’s state league 2 north-west opening round at Kim Reserve on Saturday. The schedule-makers gave City a daunting opening two weeks of the season, having to face both of last year’s state league 1 relegated sides from the get-go. But City showed it wasn’t going to be bullied in part one of its tough double, making a winning start to life in the second tier. “We didn’t know what to expect, just for the fact we haven’t been in the division for a couple of years,” City president Joe Tanti told Star Weekly Weekly. “We were playing Sunbury, who just got demoted from first division so we were expecting a tough game. We prepared ourselves well for it and the boys done well together.” City has bolstered its squad under new coach Aaron D’Antino to ensure it is no pushover in the higher league.

Of the new signings, none come with a bigger reputation than goalkeeper Jack Dovey, who made an instant impact in the win. Dovey was part of Southampton’s (England) youth set-up before moving to Australia and linking up with Cobram, where he played in a championship-winning team. His influence was important early in the game. “At the start he was [under pressure] until we sort of found our feet,” Tanti said. He put up a good effort in goal, pulled off a few good saves.” It didn’t take long for City to assert their dominance, banging home four goals in the first half to lead 4-1 at half-time, a score that would stand after 90 minutes. “Aaron [D’Antino] came in at half-time and wanted to lock the game down to make sure we got the three points,” Tanti said. Lucas Wootton’s first hit-out with City was one to remember. He was the side’s chief playmaker out wide and capped a stand-out

game with two goals. Marcus Slimane and James Duvcevski were the other City goalscorers. Ryan Filipovic made his long-awaited return to City after transferring from nearby Altona Magic. “He was an old junior player at the club and decided to come back to us and help us out in getting promoted,” Tanti said. “He sat in the middle and really took control in there. He was laying balls out and just got us cracking along.” City knows part two of its battles with last year’s relegated state league 1 sides will be a tougher assignment. Magic cracks ‘tough nut’ By Lance Jenkinson Altona Magic’s new-look squad has passed its first test with flying colours, downing a strong Cairnlea 1-0 on the road in the FFV men’s state league 1 season opener at Cairnlea Park on Saturday. The Magic’s smash-and-grab mission was complete when recruit Marino Gasparis turned in the box and fired into the back of the net in the 61st minute, the only time either goalkeeper was breached during a hard-fought contest. Magic coach Vlado Tortevski told Star Weekly it was a win of real substance against a team he tips will be a tough nut to crack at home this season. “Cairnlea is also a very good side so I’m happy with the result at the end,” he said. “They’re one of the teams you have to beat if you want to be right at the top. A lot of teams are going to have a hard time going there. “It’s a smaller ground and they’ve got a good coach, Andy O’Dell, who’s brought in a couple of players. It’s a really good team.” The Magic has been in irresistible form in the FFA Cup, where it has set up a blockbuster fifth round home tie with NPL powerhouse South Melbourne. That form has now carried into the season proper. Tortevski praised his players for their hard work on the training track over the summer. “This pre-season started very early,” he said. “We have four or five new players, so we needed time to gel together so as to perform to the highest level, and I think we achieved that. “We’ve got a good atmosphere at the club and players are putting in really good performances at the moment. “The FFA Cup is one of the starting points and it gives us momentum for the rest of the season, I hope.” The Magic had an even contribution across the board, being particularly tough defensively and allowing goalkeeper Ante Loncaric to keep a clean sheet. The talk of the club was the addition of Gasparis, who will play a key role in attack. “He’s half midfielder, half striker, a special player,” Tortevski said. “He’s the link between the midfielders and the strikers, depending on the formation we play.” The Magic will play its home opener against Diamond Valley United on Saturday. Tortevski has urged the Magic fans to turn up in big numbers. “We need the people to come out,” he said. “If you want to be a big club you need the big numbers of supporters, otherwise you can’t go to the next level. “We will give 100 per cent and it’s going to be a hard time for any team that comes to our ground.”

Yarraville trips at step-up Yarraville Glory had a tough initiation in the FFV men’s state league 1, losing 3-0 to Keilor Park at McIvor Reserve on Saturday. The visitors went to the break with a 2-0 lead and added an insurance goal in the second half for a comfortable victory. The Glory kept its cup dream alive with a commanding 3-0 win over Monash University on the road at the university’s playing fields on Sunday. Louis Schofield has been riding waves of success for some time now. The 17-year-old is a rising star of the national sailing scene, having already represented Australia at a junior level. Schofield competed at the Cadet World Championships in Weymouth, England, in 2014 as the youngest skipper of an Australian squad. Since then, the Williamstown resident has made the jump from the cadets division to the 29er class of boat. Despite the shift, Schofield has lost none of his competitive edge. “My future goal is to represent Australia at the Olympics,” Schofield said. “Moving on to the 29er, that is the next step towards that ultimate goal. “The 29er is the youth class of the 49er, which is the Olympic class,” he said. “The plan is to get good on the 29er then get good on the 49er. I just need to keep taking steps.” Schofield’s results since making the move in class include three wins at the Mordialloc Regatta and a fourth place at the New South Wales Youth Championships. All indications were a big win was coming, and that arrived last month. Schofield, with partner Tom Alexander, claimed gold at the Victorian State Championships. “We were in second place for most of the regatta,” Schofield said. “The last day of the regatta was a bit more windy. That was when we were able to get in front. “We were competing against a team from Tasmania and they couldn’t keep up with us, which was nice to see after sailing behind them for most of the regatta.” Schofield is now in contention to be picked for the Australian squad going to the Youth World Championships in Holland this year.

For his outstanding sporting achievements, Schofield is the monthly nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award. Schofield will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in his future sporting goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level. Williamstown CYMS did everything at a million miles an hour last season – sometimes to the detriment of the side. CYs are one of the quickest teams in Victorian Amateur Football Association premier C division and were eager to take full advantage of that last season. The fast ball movement looked good when it was coming off but sloppy when it wasn’t – and the players appeared unwilling to take their feet off the accelerator when the rapid approach was failing. CYs will enter the new season on Saturday still one of the speediest teams in the competition, but they will be armed with knowledge of how to better utilise their main asset. Coach Matt Montebello says his players will be intent on tempering their natural speed with a better skills component. “We’ve made some distinct changes to our game style … about protecting the footy a little bit more and being a bit more methodical about our approach with our ball movement,” he said. “That’s been a focus across the course of preseason.” It will be CYs’ second season at premier C level, the third tier of amateur football. Last year was a mixed bag, with the team stalling out of the blocks before coming home with a wet sail. The CYs beat two finalists but lost to neighbouring teams on the ladder. CYs settled for a respectable seven wins, finishing fourth-last in a competitive division and avoiding relegation. Now, with the adjustment period over, the bar has been raised.

“It took us the first half of the year to adjust to the pace of the division,” Montebello said. “We definitely had a bit of a premiership hangover [from the division 1 flag in 2014] … then in the second half of the year we did well. “It’s about continuing on from where we finished last year and actually giving finals a red-hot shake.” The CYs meet Old Camberwell Grammarians in the season opener at Fearon Reserve on Saturday.

Bulldogs enjoy a smashing start By Lance Jenkinson After three years at the helm of Footscray, coach Lachlan Anderson has a good gauge on his team’s standing within the Hockey Victoria women’s premier league. Anderson went into the new season with a host of reasons for optimism but no one truly knows how they will stack up until they bang sticks with the opposition in April. The Bulldogs were ferocious in their season opener, ripping apart Waverley 7-1 in a stunning opening round performance at the Footscray Hockey Centre on Saturday. “I’ve got a pretty good grasp of the competition – who’s in and who’s out and who’s where,” Anderson said. “I was reasonably bullish about how we’ve improved, where we’re at and how our list looked. “Waverley are a seasoned, strong, physical and tough team but we managed to do a pretty solid job on them … kept them out and didn’t give them the chances they’re used to getting.” The bulldogs did not have it all their own way. They had to stave off a number of quality early Waverley chances to hold on to a 1-0 lead at the break but first-game goalkeeper Caroline Lee was up to the task. “There were two or three chances they could’ve finished off against a lesser goalkeeper and put us under the pump on the scoreboard,” Anderson said. “She did a great job. “It was a real collective effort, a good defensive structure – everyone was organised. “Voting for players after the game was one of the toughest days I’ve had in two and a half years involved with the group because there were so many people who did their job.” It was Tegan Purser who provided the most pain for the visitors, scoring with a hat-trick.

Purser was the Bulldogs’ leading goalscorer last season and shows no signs of slowing down in the new campaign. “She scored three goals off a pretty limited preparation,” Anderson said. “She’s in a much better position than she was last year with regards to injuries.” Olivia Colasurdo fired in two goals to play her part in a six-goal second half. Georgia Cutrale and new recruit Tara Hill also found the back of the net.

Cutrale is hoping her fine start to the season is the beginning of an extended stay in the top side. “She’s a girl that’s trying to forge her way into that group,” Anderson said. “Over the last year and a half she’s been in and out of the ones and the twos. “The goal for her will be a good confidence booster.” Footscray will take on Doncaster away in the second round at Doncaster Regional Hockey Centre on Saturday. Altona also made a flying start to the new season, beating Mentone 3-1 at Altona. In men’s premier league, Footscray was narrowly beaten 2-1 by Waverley in its season opener at home on Saturday, while Altona suffered a disappointing 5-1 loss to Powerhouse-St Kilda. The Fiat 500 has an enduring aesthetic appeal that was always going to prove a hit when Fiat decided to produce a modern version in 2007. Trouble is, while everyone loved the retro looks it was still a very small car without the practicality that many expect these days. In its wisdom, Fiat decided to produce an upscale version, resulting in one of the more unique small SUVs on the market. Unlike the Mini Clubman, whose proportions don’t quite match the beauty of it’s popular little brother, the Fiat 500X has all the curves in the right places and still looks cute. If you were looking at it from afar, the only real difference would be the way the wheel arches sit high above the tyres. Another difference comes with the top-spec all-wheel-drive Cross Plus, which has contrasting bumper bars and mouldings over the wheel arch to give it more rugged look. Despite the resemblance, this is very different car to the little 500 – it has more in common with the Jeep Renegade, including the same chassis.

Being a Fiat, the interior was never going to be bland. The 500X Cross Plus I tested had red and black leather trim that was pretty garish but suited the car’s general style. I also liked the look of the fittings, including the door handles and airconditioning dials. Outside, there’s a host of paint and stripe options and further personalisation can be had with different coloured door mirrors and wheels. I quite liked the metallic grey with red side mirrors and red go-fast stripes on our test car. The front seats were comfortable and back seats provided good legroom – something that certainly couldn’t be said about the smaller 500. The rear easily accommodates two adults or three kids. Boot space is another obvious improvement over the 500, but it’s not that big compared to

It could also do with more cabin storage other than the cup holders and locker in the centre console. Performance The 500X also differs from its little brother in performance. The 1.4-litre petrol turbo engine propels it well and the automatic transmission

works with it nicely. There are paddle shifts should you feel like a little more hands-on driving. It has different driving modes – normal, sport and wet/snow. It feels nice and solid on the road but handles nicely and has a comfortable ride. Road noise is quite low despite the chunky 18-inch wheels. Fuel consumption is excellent. I was averaging about seven litres/100 kilometres,

which is just over the combined rate claimed by Fiat. This car isn’t short on safety equipment with heaps of standard features across the range including the reversing camera and rear cross-path detection, blind-spot monitoring in the side mirrors and forward collision warning. Cost Even with all the features, pricing is on the hefty side, but a strengthening dollar might

help things. Prices start at $29,000 drive away for the base-model, manual Pop. Subsequent models in the range – the Pop Star, Lounge and Cross Plus – are all automatic and are priced from $36,822, $41,982 and $43,014 respectively.
