Top mark for brekky club A healthy start is making a big difference for pupils at Altona North Primary School. The school’s Breakfast Club program is one of 172 across Victoria benefiting from a new partnership between the state government and Yarraville-based food charity Foodbank Victoria. The $13.7 million program is providing a nutritious breakfast for the one in seven children who go to school hungry in Victoria every day. Altona North Primary School acting principal Robyn Gregson said Foodbank’s support for the schools’ breakfast club was invaluable. “The children come to school and they get to have a full belly and something to look forward to,” she said. “The attendance is better and they are better able to learn. You often find children who are shy and haven’t been spending time with other children at lunch time start to build those relations.” Foodbank Victoria chief executive Dave McNamara said teachers and principals had seen increases in attendance, peer-to-peer connections and positive student-teacher relations. Crossing ‘leapfrog’ query By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay’s deputy mayor has questioned the decision to fast-track removal of the Kororoit Creek Road level crossing in Altona given that it’s 151st on the Department of Transport’s priority list. The boomgates are down for a total of 11 minutes in the two-hour morning peak, but the crossing has been fast-tracked for removal by 2019 as part of the state government’s $6 billion level crossing removal project. Two other Hobsons Bay crossings – at Aviation Road, Laverton, and Ferguson Street, Williamstown – are earmarked for later

removal even though they are 16th and 21st on the priority list. Some crossings not even earmarked for removal also rank higher. They include Maidstone Street, Altona (47th priority); Champion Road, Newport (99th); Maidstone Street South, Altona (109th); and Maddox Road, Newport (130th). In its formal position statement on the level crossing removals, the council states: “The basis for prioritisation of particular sites is not clear.” Deputy mayor Sandra Wilson told last week’s council meeting the removal of the Kororoit Creek Road crossing could only

be justified by duplicating the Altona loop railway line while the train service was shut down for three months to do the work. The single-track Altona loop is one of the Metro network’s biggest bottlenecks, but the Level Crossing Removal Authority has said it will not be duplicated during the level crossing removal. Trains run every 22 minutes in peak times and every 20 minutes off-peak. “We don’t understand why it [the Kororoit Creek Road level crossing] was chosen,” Cr Wilson said. “It’s 151 on the list, it’s not dangerous per se, it’s not congested.”

Cr Wilson said the only way to justify removing the level crossing was if the Altona loop was duplicated so trains could run every 10 minutes. The Level Crossing Removal Authority did not say why it had prioritised the Kororoit Creek Road crossing for removal over higher-ranking crossings in Hobsons Bay. Project director Tony Hedley said the authority was established to remove the 50 level crossings earmarked by the state government as an election promise, and community consultation would start early next year on the removal of crossings at Ferguson Street and Aviation Road.

Maribyrnong’s Naturestrip Landscape Policy & Guidelines limit the types of plants that can be grown, and state they are to be pruned to a height of no more than 50 centimetres.

Maribyrnong council planning services director Nigel Higgins told Star Weekly last month there was no plan to update the guidelines. He said edible plants could be grown directly on the nature strip, provided they complied with the guidelines. Ms Gray last week received a letter from the council warning her that she has until this Friday to remove the boxes. She responded by launching an online petition that by Tuesday had attracted 220 signatures. The petition calls on the council to review its policy on planter boxes to grow vegetables on nature strips. It refers to a 2013 council report which recommended the council consider

Ms Gray said the council was failing to keep up with the times and ignoring its own priorities, missing an opportunity to promote greater social engagement and improve food security. “We are requesting Maribyrnong council review these local laws and provisions in favour of a more progressive environmental use of this common land,” she said. The guidelines require residents to keep nature strips free of tripping hazards, to provide suitable space for bin collections and for people entering and exiting in cars.

Two Braybrook sisters have been sent to jail for ferrying heroin into Melbourne on an overnight coach from Sydney. Thuy Trinh, 29, and Linh Trinh, 28, pleaded guilty in the County Court to several drugs charges including trafficking and possession of a drug of dependence in a large commercial quantity. A sentencing hearing on February 26 heard that on at least three occasions, the sisters travelled to Sydney between September 24 and October 1, 2014, to buy heroin. Heroin valued up to $285,000 was sourced by Linh and ferried back to Melbourne by Thuy on an overnight coach. The court heard Linh bought 350-gram blocks of heroin valued at between $95,000 and $97,000 each. The heroin was then packaged at Gordon Street in Footscray and supplied around Melbourne by five individual street dealers. Judge Michael McInerney said Linh was the “major operator” in the ring. “The precise large commercial quantity … is unable to be quantified,” he said. “I personally would [describe] … her as ‘the hub in the wheel’ … her role is fundamental to the trafficking. [She] is the person who can be described as being at management level.” Thuy Trinh was sentenced to five years’ jail and Linh Trinh to seven years and six months. Ben Cameron

A community campaign for a new park in Footscray has failed after the state government put a $5.5 million price tag on the land. Maribyrnong councillors voted 6-1 against purchasing surplus Regional Rail Link land on Buckley Street to create new open space in an area soon to be dominated by high-rise apartments. The council will instead push for the creation of a park on Walter Street as part of a redevelopment of the 1.4-hectare Transdev bus depot site, a project likely to include about 400 new apartments above a supermarket.

Public input in freeway plans The proponent of a $5.5 billion freeway tunnel running under Yarraville has defended a decision not to release a report into community feedback on the project. Transurban chief Scott Charlton said feedback relating to the redesigned Western Distributor tunnel entrance, featuring flyover ramps through open space leading to a southern tunnel portal near a cluster of Yarraville homes, would be released in coming months. Fronting a state government infrastructure committee earlier this month, Mr Charlton said community consultation had already influenced the project’s design. “We’ve gone through two major designs on getting more trucks off the streets and then going back and looking at the southern portal in the middle of the West Gate, taking the powerlines underground and finishing the Federation Trail,” he told the committee. Committee chairman Joshua Morris questioned Mr Charlton on why no report had been released on consultation that took place last September and October, given a report had been released detailing consultation from April to July last year. “Why is it that it took two months to release the last report and yet, five months down the track, we still do not have a consultation report from the last period of consultation?” Mr Charlton said feedback was still being gathered and a further report would be available about midyear. He said there

Child left stranded A seven-year-old boy was left chasing a moving train at Newport while his terrified parents and passengers tried desperately to alert the driver who failed to stop, according to the child’s family. Andy Ashton said he and his wife Gen, two young children and their friend were travelling by train last Friday afternoon when the doors closed on them – three times. The first time it shut, the parents were getting on board. The family then had to pry open the doors again as it began to crush one of the children’s bikes. Moments later, the doors closed for the third time, this time leaving their seven-year-old son alone on the platform. “The train then began leaving the station with our son, screaming and terrified, sprinting alongside the train trying to open the doors,” Mr Ashton said. “My wife was yelling at him to stop following the train and wait for us; the entire carriage was on its feet trying to open the doors but the train continued on.” Desperate to stop the train, passengers began to press all the emergency intercom buttons, but to no avail. Mr Ashton said he then yanked down the manual override door lever, but there was no response from the intercom and the train continued on its way to the next station. “Eventually I managed to open the doors a fraction,” he said. “This seemed to alert the driver to the situation as they came over the intercom and told us to alight at the next station and take the next train back.” Mr Ashton said he then called triple zero, and the police sent a car to the station. in contact with the family and was undertaking an investigation, including viewing CCTV footage. “We encourage customers who may take longer to board to travel towards the front of the train where the driver can clearly see them,” the spokesman said. “This is particularly important at stations where there is a curve in the platform, such as Newport. Split over parking crisis

By Goya Dmytryshchak and Adem Saban Hobsons Bay and Wyndham residents are at odds over whether there should be more commuter parking at Aircraft train station in Laverton. Point Cook resident Nicole Puttyfoot has started a petition calling for more parking at Williams Landing and Aircraft stations. It gained 500 signatures in a week. Ms Puttyfoot said that by 7.30am, the car parks were full at both stations. “The solution is simple: increase the number of car parks at train stations and it’ll take cars off the road,” she said. “Enough is enough.” Laverton resident Sandra Horsburgh said Williams Landing carpark should be expanded so commuters from outside Hobsons Bay wouldn’t park at Aircraft station. “The main issue I have is the fact that any extension of Aircraft carpark isn’t for people in Laverton – it’s for all the people who come in from all the outlying suburbs,” she said. “Williams Landing is full. That means they haven’t planned it properly because we’ve still got people coming over from Williams Landing,” she said. Hobsons Bay councillor Colleen Gates said the council backed Laverton residents’ view that there should be no more commuter parking at Aircraft or Laverton stations. “There is sufficient parking when you count the number of parking bays,” she said. “We already have more than 1500 cars parking in Laverton on a daily basis, in a suburb of only 5000 people. “Residents living in Point Cook or further beyond Hobsons Bay should be accessing their local train stations – either Williams Landing or the new stations attached to the Regional

Rail Link. If there was to be any expansion of car parking, it should occur at Williams Landing station, which I understand has only 500 spaces – less than half that of Laverton and Aircraft combined.”

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the state government would be auditing landholdings near train stations across the state to identify areas that could be sealed and made available for free commuter parking.

A popular Braybrook playground will rise from the ashes next year after being cleared for take-off by Maribyrnong council. The aircraft-themed Lance Reichstein playground at Skinner Reserve was recently demolished following a fire, deemed to be “suspicious”, on December 22. Insurers are expected to provide about $500,000 of the total $743,400 to be allocated to the rebuilding. Deputy mayor Catherine Cumming said that even before the fire, the old playground was looking tired. “It was built in 1999; the local community rallied around getting it built,” she said. “Since the fire there has been great support [for a new one] and I’m really looking forward to this process. “I’m hoping building will start soon and that the children will only go without a playground for 12 months.” Cr Nam Quach said it was still disappointing that the popular playground had been lost to vandalism. “Words can’t really express that people would do that to a community, but it’s a good opportunity to re-imagine this playground and renew this area,” he said. Feedback on the plan will be sought in April ahead of a draft concept design in May, and further consultation will be carried out once designs are available. Elderly sex abuser spared jail By Goya Dmytryshchak An elderly man who sexually abused his daughter and grandchildren at his Altona North home and other locations has avoided jail due to his age and frailty. The 88-year-old man, who can’t be identified, pleaded guilty to nine charges dating back to 1979. The County Court this month sentenced him to three years, wholly suspended for three years. The man was also placed on the sex offenders register for life and ordered to attend Altona

North police station to provide a mouth scraping for the Victoria Police data base. The court heard that the offending against his daughter happened between 1968 and 1973, when she was aged between six and 10. The man offended against his grandson between 1979 to 1983 when the boy was aged between six and 10. He also offended against his grand-daughter from 1982 to 1986 when she was aged between eight and 11. The court heard the offending came to light when the grandson came forward to police in 2013.

After that, his grand-daughter came forward, followed by his daughter. Give, take, be happy Williamstown women Ali Campbell and Virginia Millard have established Australia’s first ‘Give.Take.Stand’ modelled on a German initiative called the Give Box. The stand, in the foyer of Williamstown library until April 11, is a walk-in box where people can place items for others or take things for themselves. Ms Campbell said it was part of a growing international community movement celebrating a cashless economy and recycling unwanted items. “We saw it as an entity happening in Europe, in Germany in particular . . . and we thought, this looks fantastic to have in our community – let’s do it,” she said. “It’s quite a movement. In Germany, they’re open 24 hours; they’re just there on the street. “We hope to have a street version up and running soon. This is more of an indoor

version; it’s not weather-proof. We love it for its sustainability. It’s recycling items that might otherwise go to waste. “It’s a cashless economy thing, so it’s all about just sharing and not worrying about who owns what. “If you don’t need it, give it away. Treasurer Tim Pallas visited Williamstown on Sunday to announce a state government fund of $10 million to be allocated over four years for protecting the health of Port Phillip Bay. The money will come from the leasing of the Port of Melbourne. Parents of children with special needs have a new chance to connect while their children have fun at Williamstown. MyTime is a group that meets weekly, offering peer support and resources for parents and carers of children with special needs. Footscray-based Tweddle Child and Family Health Service launched the group, inviting parents and carers to drop in, meet other parents and have time to unwind and talk about their experiences. National MyTime director Annette Michaux said receiving a diagnosis that their child has autism, a chronic medical condition or a developmental delay immediately changed the course of parents’ lives. She said families then had to navigate the disability support system, access resources and build new friendships

and connections. “Research tells us that many parents of children with disability struggle with finding time to look after themselves, and that social isolation is a real danger for these unsung heroes” she said. MyTime co-ordinator Kylee Brealey, herself the mother of a child with special needs, has been involved with MyTime for more than six years. “Parents know that they can come to MyTime and not feel judged,” she said. “Not a week goes by when a parent won’t share their struggles or ask for advice from others.” MyTime convenes at 83 Cecil Street, Williamstown, from 10am until noon on Fridays during school term. Still no answer to riddle By Sumeyya Ilanbey The person in the middle of the painting (right) is surely a typical Aussie who doesn’t know what to make of the turmoil around him, former prime minister Tony Abbott speculated in 1993. Others said it was “spring”. Some were sure “he” was Paul Keating. But only one person in the world knows who the three figures represent: Sydney-based artist Martin Shaw. Shaw’s Three Well Known Australians painting has been touring the nation since 1983, stopping in each state once every 10 years. It’s on exhibition at Williamstown library until April 30. The painting encourages people to use their creativity and imagination to work out who the figures are … or what they represent. Shaw says he receives extraordinary feedback and suggestions, but he won’t disclose whether anyone has ever guessed correctly. “It gets people to use their imagination and when people write their predictions, it’s a bit of a social commentary of the time,” he says. “The same painting has been touring since 1983 and it’s interesting to see what people write.”

Developer wins units dispute A developer has won a battle against Maribyrnong council’s decision to cap a 198-unit project in Footscray at four storeys and force the inclusion of threebedroom apartments. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal knocked out a number of conditions imposed on developing the site of the iconic 501 Receptions, paving the way for FSG Corp Australia’s $30 million project to proceed. Plans for 495-507 Barkly Street now include twin blocks housing 104 onebedroom and 94 two-bedroom units on four levels above eight ground-floor shops. VCAT member Bill Sibonis noted that the fifth storey, knocked out by councillors as part of the project’s approval, had been accepted by council staff and previously ticked off in a 2010 approval for 111 units. FSG Corp Australia later applied to almost double the number of units and decrease their size “to respond to current market demands”. Mr Sibonis also overturned the council’s requirement for 10 threebedroom apartments for reasons including their availability in the neighbouring Banbury Village development. Council argued in VCAT that a five-storey building was not appropriate to the area, but Mr Sibonis found a fifth storey would not overwhelm it. The developer reportedly paid $8.4 million for the 6288-square-metre site. Benjamin Millar

MY PLACE Seddon resident and literature lover Bruno Lettieri, known for conversations with some of Australia’s most treasured writers, tells Benjamin Millar he feels poetry and magic at home. What is your connection with Seddon? I have been living in Seddon for about nine years now; it’s been great. I can remember moving in and a neighbour came from across the road to welcome us, then someone else came to do the same, and we just thought this was a great place to be. There is a lovely poetic feel here. Writer Ailsa Piper, who lives in St Kilda, came over for a talk and she said this is a gem of a place; she felt there was something very different to it, a lack of pretension. How has living in this area influenced you? For me, ideas come from a space. I get an immediate sense from a place. I will be down on the river and imagine we could do this or do that, have a conversation here or get a double bus, and have poetry and a picnic there. What can you tell us about your new conversation series Bruno Goes Everywhere? It will feature writers and thinkers in conversation at the Bluestone Church Arts Space in Footscray. We had about 65 Rotunda in the West conversations; they had a marvellous following and seemed to matter to people. People were saying I should bring these conversations back. What are your hopes for the series? If I can do five or six between now and late November, I think that would be great. We have

got Helen Garner lined up; she’s got a new book coming out. We will have John Clarke and we are hoping to have Michael Leunig as well. I try to have a really convivial feel; we don’t try and rush it along and rush people out. Helen Garner told me I create multiple platforms in conversation and it was lovely to hear that. Like any good conversation you have, it follows its own meanderings. Where do you like to go to read or think? I go down to Point Gellibrand a lot. I take my notebook down there and I just look at the sea. Invariably, if I ever get stuck, I go down there or I go down to the Maribyrnong River. Sitting on a sea-rock looking out to sea, it’s magical. What are some of your favourite memories of the area? We have had nights where we have taken poets down to Gem Pier or Point Gellibrand and they would read poetry in the twilight to people – it was just magical. You don’t need to go to Venice when you have the Maribyrnong River right here. 2015 Miles Franklin award winner and Altona resident Sofie Laguna will be the first writer in Bruno Lettieri’s new conversation series. Roosters back from the brink By Lance Jenkinson The future of the West Footscray Football Club was on the line at a hastily arranged meeting last Tuesday night. Last year’s Western Region Football League division 2 runners-up had to decide if they were going to take the extraordinary step of pulling the plug on their whole 2016 season. The Roosters got dreadfully close to shutting the doors and remain on the endangered list but have managed to buy some time and will field a senior team for their season opener against Albanvale at Robert Bruce Reserve on Saturday. Roosters coach Shane Lucas said the meeting amounted to a “D-Day”. “If the numbers weren’t there, I said to the club they would have to look at their options,” he said. “We got enough players there at the meeting, so it’s all full steam ahead – well, as much as we can do. “We’ve got about 25 or 30 players at the moment so we’ll see how it all goes.” West Footscray endured a mass exodus over the summer. All players on the list from last season, except for nine reserves players, have moved on. Compounding the player defection, two coaches have gone in the off-season. Lucas, sensing the urgency of the situation for his beloved club, committed to coach two weeks ago. “After last year’s grand final, I hadn’t been in contact with the club,” he said. “I was there for two years on the boundary line and had two goes at it and didn’t win, so I thought it was a good time for someone else to come in and have a crack. “Then I got a phone call two weeks ago to help the club keep the doors open.” Lucas is a Rooster at heart and could not bare to think of his club withering away. In the club’s time of need, he was not going to let it go by the wayside. “It was a no-brainer in the end,” he said. “If we had the players, I was going to stay there because if they shut the doors and I knew that I could’ve kept them open, I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself. I thought I’d at least have a crack at it.” There will be no pussyfooting around under Lucas’s watch. He has no interest in simply fielding a team for the sake of merely keep the Roosters name alive. “I spelled it out to them – it’s all back to old school,” Lucas said. “If you don’t train you don’t

play – and that means if the captain doesn’t train, he doesn’t play. “The last thing you want to do is turn into a pub football club because you’ll never get it back if you let it get back to that stage.” Rebuilding the Roosters culture is the top priority for Lucas. He said the club had made mistakes in past seasons in the players it recruited and that the current players would unfortunately have to bare the brunt of that. His only expectation of the current players is to be professional in everything they do. “I said to the players, you’re going to have to have thick skins,” he said. “We lost two grand finals … we basically dominated the competition and most of those boys didn’t mind telling the crowd and the opposition how good they were. “It’s got nothing to do with you and it’s got nothing to do with me, but we’re going to cop that back this year 10-fold. “As long as we can say our conduct is fine, we can hold our heads up … we all roll up and we all wear the same clothes, and we all do a warm-up together and it’s still professional, at least we can say we’re doing it all professionally, even if we do lose a game by 50 goals.” “That’s the motto of the year – keep your head up and have pride in what you do.”

Lacrosse World Cup squad heads west The road to next year’s world cup begins in the west for Australia’s women’s lacrosse team. The Aussies have been using the western suburbs as a training base this month. The squad had its strength and conditioning training at Mount St Joseph Girls College, Altona; it played international games against Japanese club champions Meiji University at Footscray Hockey Club and continued its camp at the Altona Hockey Club. Newport Ladies Lacrosse Club head coach Sue Sofarnos is assistant coach of the Australian women’s team. Ten players in the squad have western suburbs links. Of the 10, three – Thea Kwas (Maryland), Steph McNamara (Louisville) and Bec Lane (St Josephs, Philadelphia) – are based in the US.

Sofarnos says the players are at a critical stage of training, with squads soon to be trimmed. “It’s all happening in the west,” she said. “We really pushed them at the training camp. There were some sore and tired bodies, and coaches too. There was a lot at stake for everyone.” It is not only the Lacrosse World Cup in England getting the attention of players; lacrosse has been included in the World Games in Poland next year. “It’s an Olympic Village type of atmosphere and this is the first step for lacrosse to have any chance of being an Olympic sport at some point,” Sofarnos said. The Lacrosse Victoria women’s state league season starts April 17. Lance Jenkinson

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The Easter break means this column has to be written before the first round of the AFL season, so I don’t know whether I am a happy Bulldogs supporter or not. To be honest, I am happy regardless of the result against Fremantle. I have very realistic expectations of the 2016 season. I was thrilled by what the Dogs delivered in 2015; if they can replicate that performance this year, I will be delighted. The buzz you get seeing young players go to the elite level is fantastic. Easton Wood is a great example of a young man who battled through a lot of adversity, injuries and confidence issues to become one of the competition’s best. I think the Doggies will have a good year but I’m not happy the AFL chief executive backs us in for the grand final. What do think about that? I saw it as a vote grabber to the rank and file supporter.

■ The Werribee Tigers will be on the MCG on Friday, April 1 – and that’s no April Fool’s Day joke. They will be taking on the AFL Academy under-18 side made up of the best young players from across the country assembled to showcase their skills on the ‘G’. As you would imagine, it is also a great opportunity for the Werribee boys to strut their stuff in front of AFL recruiters. We all know the jump from one footy level to the next can be enormous and this game will be very interesting to watch for that reason alone. How good will it be for everyone involved to be playing on the MCG? For me, that is the absolute winner here.

Flag is so much sweeter By Lance Jenkinson If Footscray ANA savoured its Victorian Turf Cricket west B1 premiership a little extra, it was because of the hardship the club has been through in recent times. ANA has a rich history dating back to its foundation year, 1931. Even the best of clubs goes through rough patches and ANA hit rock bottom when it finished last on the ladder without a win in 2013-14. The turmoil was not only confined to the cricket pitch. ANA lost some long-serving members of its committee, which would have threatened the club’s survival had it not had willing volunteers to take over. “I’ve been here since 1980 and I’ve seen a lot in that time,” ANA president John Wetzler told Star Weekly. “We’ve gone through a bit of upheaval in the last five or six years, with a collective of 70 years’ service leaving the committee.” ANA’s revival began last season when it missed the finals by a heartbreaking three points.

It backed up this season and was a clear second-favourite going into the finals. When minor premier Deer Park was rolled in the semi-final, it paved the way for ANA to claim the premiership with a grand final victory over West Newport. Not only did ANA win, it did so after scoring just 88 in the first innings. The wickets kept falling when West Newport went to the crease and was skittled for 76 in what Wetzler described as “one of the best days of cricket I’ve ever seen”. “The way our boys fought back was just what our culture of the club is all about,” he said. The first innings result stood and ANA had gone from zero to hero in three seasons. The man behind the club’s resurrection is playing coach and life member Daryl Veteha. Veteha answered the call from Wetzler to coach the club three years ago and it’s been onwards and upwards ever since. “He’s done it for almost eight months a year for the past three years and not a dollar has gone to him,” Wetzler said. “He’s brought the side from no wins

three years ago to winning the flag this season.” Wetzler was also thrilled that homegrown player Daniel Nightingale captained the premiership team. “He was one of the boys from the under-17s who came through and although we thrust too much responsibility at him, he ate it up and keeps eating it up,” Wetzler said. “Now, as a 23-year-old, he’s a seasoned campaigner who’s led and played beyond his years for a number of seasons. “People like Daryl and Dan are just two examples and we’ve probably got another 10 examples of fantastic people at our club.” The future is bright at ANA. The club is financially stable; it will soon be given the keys to a new pavilion; its top side will move up to west A1 next season with a young side built for sustained success; and the juniors will continue to grow through their Milo T20 Blast and In2Cricket programs. And next summer the club is looking to field its first women’s team. “There’s a lot happening here and we’re very proud of it,” Wetzler said.

■ The WRFL interleague sides (senior and under-19) have been training solidly in the lead-up to a massive weekend at Whitten Oval on May 21 for matches against Ballarat. Anthony Eames and the coaches have been busy preparing the WRFL squad so the players can deliver their best possible effort against Ballarat. The under-19 panel has Matt Dean, the Spotswood premiership coach, at the helm with Gary Turner helping out. It is a very big commitment from everyone at the league and I am happy to say we will be broadcasting the game on 88.9 WYN FM on May 21. My great mate, Steve Thom, is chairman of selectors and is keen for the WRFL to be represented at its very best. Gaffney said there were two major strengths to Monleh’s sprinting. “One of his real strengths is his natural speed,” he said. “The other is, there is a lot of fluency in his running. He is quite a natural runner … one of the most natural that I would have come across in almost 40 years of coaching.” Monleh’s next major event will be the national all schools championships later this year. Melvin Monleh was carrying some extra weight in his suitcase when he returned from the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Perth earlier this month. The 13-year-old needed to make room for four gold medals. Monleh dominated the sprint events at the championships, claiming individual gold medals in the under-15 100 metres and 200 metres. Not done there, he also anchored Victoria’s 4 x 100 metre and 4 x 200 metre relay teams to victory. Monleh’s coach, Steve Gaffney, said the performances were up there with the best of the young star’s career. “This year Melvin is much more into the Athletics Victoria and Athletics Australia junior pathways,” Gaffney said. “Prior to that, he was in Little Athletics competitions. “These are fantastic results for him. He is actually racing the best runners in the under-15 age group in the country. He is doing that, at this stage, quite easily.” Monleh got his start at the Sunbury Little Athletics Centre, where he enjoyed outstanding success, winning three gold medals and one silver at the Australian Little Athletics Championships last year. As well as progressing to youth competition, the Melton resident was also given a scholarship to the Maribyrnong Sports Academy.

March 20, 2016, is a date Footscray United all-rounder Geeth Silva will never forget. Not only was he part of United’s premiership-winning team on that day, but it also ushered in the arrival of his first-born child. “It was the best day of my life,” he told Star Weekly. “I got two presents in the same day: the baby and the premiership.” It turned into one of the longest days in Silva’s life. Silva was supposed to continue batting for United on day four of the Victorian Turf Cricket west A1 grand final win over Altona Roosters. He was 31 not out and the United was hoping he could push on and make a big score for it to defend. At 4am on the Sunday, Silva’s wife, Madushi, got her first labour pains. At 1.30pm, baby girl Richelle was born. After the successful delivery, Silva was given permission by his wife to re-join his United teammates. Madushi knows how important cricket is to her husband and she had supported him the previous three days of the grand final. “When I got to the cricket ground, they all cheered, they were all clapping me,” Silva said. “They were happy for me. It was an exciting day.” Silva not only got to experience the birth of his child, but got to play in the dying stages of the grand final. He even took a catch while his fellow Sri Lankan, Rasika Fernando, was bowling up a storm in the second innings with 8-37 off 17 overs to make it 11 wickets for the match. “It was great to bring a premiership to the club,” Silva said. “It’s my sixth year playing for Footscray United and now I’ve got two premierships.” Silva, an import player for United, loves returning each summer and after six years he

calls United his home club, even though he lives so far away. Silva was relatively quiet with the bat this season, making 226 runs at 20. But his finals series will long be remembered, after his 67 in the semi-final against Werribee Centrals and the now-famous ‘31 retired’ in the second innings of the final. But Silva was brilliant with the ball all season, taking 27 wickets at 19, including four in the semi-final. The 31-year-old can now sit back and take it all in after a whirlwind week. “The baby is very healthy and my wife is also very healthy,” Silva said. “Happy now, I’ll just enjoy it. I’ve also got a flag.”

Bring it on, say eager Eagles By Lance Jenkinson Like a kid in the lead-up to Christmas day, Yarraville-Seddon coach Dean Callaway is counting down the sleeps until the start of the Western Region Football League division 2 season. Callaway will get to unwrap his prized recruits while his team gets a chance to prove its worthiness to be in the same conversation going on about some of its rivals. “All the talk around the league is about Caroline Springs and North Footscray and that’s fine, but we know what we’ve got in our yard and we’re pretty confident we can match it,” Callaway said. “We’re in for an exciting year. The boys are hanging out for the season to start.” The Eagles will face embattled West Footscray in their season opener. The Roosters have struggled for numbers this season and their short-term future was only assured after a committee meeting last week. “I feel for the club,” Callaway said. “My brother used to play there as a junior … it’s disappointing the way it’s happened to them.” But once 2.15pm comes on April 9, Yarraville-Seddon cannot afford to show any mercy. The Eagles might claim to be bigger, stronger and fitter than last season, and they may have had a preseason that ran like clockwork, but a host of fresh faces means there will be a period of adjustment will be required. “We’ve had a really solid pre-season, the guys are super fit and the players we’ve picked up are big bodied,” Callaway said. “But in our last practice game, out of last year’s side we had six players and 14 new faces, so I don’t think we’ll start jelling and hit our straps until about round four.”

The Eagles have bolstered their stocks with proven leaders. With the club embarking on a three-to-four year plan to be a self-servicing division one side, it needed some mature heads. “We’ve got to keep building with our youth,” Callaway said. “Some experienced players will help to bring these young guys on.” The club had no hesitation handing Lachie Longmire a playing assistant coaching role. The nephew of Sydney Swans coach John Longmire has not put a foot wrong since his arrival from Corowa-Rutherglen. “He’s been around – he’s a 30 year old, but he’s a personal trainer, so he’s very fit and looks after himself,” Callaway said. “His leadership ability on the ground can’t be questioned … he’ll be an outstanding footballer for us.” A perfect fit for player and club was Macauley Goring, who arrives from Callaway’s former club, Sunshine Kangaroos. Goring, a versatile player who can play onball or on the half-forward or half-back lines, is hunting a premiership and was sold on the potential of the Eagles. “His voice at training and his leadership has been real good and that’s what we want because we’re a young group,” Callaway said. Ben McCrorey, an onballer from the Tuggeranong Hawks in the AFL Canberra competition, and Mason Angove, a ruckman from the Caulfield Bears, will bolster the Eagles’ midfield. The Eagles are awaiting clearances for Shane Weatherley, Ryan Cornish and Matt Taylor, all formerly of Werribee Centrals. Macauley Goring has landed at Yarraville-Seddon this season. (Michael Copp)
