Cruel turns for family MEILING EGAN
By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona North woman has told of her family’s ordeal after her younger brother died, her uncle crashed his car and thieves stole her older brother’s car containing items for the funeral. MeiLing Egan’s 32-year-old brother, Jay Clucas, died last Monday after battling depression. He had been on life support for four days. Fours days earlier, after finding out about Jay, Ms Egan’s uncle Rod left the house upset and had a severe car crash. He remains in Royal
Melbourne Hospital. A day after Jay died, his elder brother Brad had his white Range Rover stolen from his Point Cook home. The car contained photos to be used for Jay’s funeral along with passports that Brad’s family needed for a flight they had booked to Bali on Monday this week. But some good has emerged from the tragedy. Ms Egan said that while at Footscray Hospital, the family learned Jay was an organ donor. “We were surprised by Western Hospital telling us that only four people who passed last year through Footscray Hospital were
organ donors,” she said. “Jay, from what we understood, has helped six recipients. We’re really happy with that. There’s a silver lining to what has happened. It just put such a smile on my mum’s face to know that her little boy’s still with us in some way.” Ms Egan said she wanted to thank the community for its incredible support. Brad’s car was recovered at a Werribee shopping centre on Thursday after a photo of the stolen vehicle was widely shared on social media. On Tuesday, the car thieves turned Brad’s iPad on and it pinged his iPhone, which

revealed the location. Police rushed to the reported address, which was Medford Street in Altona – famous as the street where former prime minister Julia Gillard lived. The car wasn’t there when police arrived, but it was dumped two days later in Werribee. Items from the car have not been recovered. Ms Egan’s family hopes their tragedy will raise awareness of organ donation. For Jay’s funeral today, they requested that donations be made to beyondblue in lieu of flowers. ‘Riff-raff’ trash fishing village By Goya Dmytryshchak The Williamstown lessee of a fishing shed on Kororoit Creek has called on Hobsons Bay council to stop people using his land for rubbish dumping, drug taking and even filming pornography. Gary Davison, one of several shed holders in the Kororoit Creek Fishing Village on Gray Reserve Road, said “nefarious” people accessed the area via adjacent council land. He is asking the council to erect a gate or bollards on its land to stop vehicle access to the river by “riff-raff and bogans”. “Just of late, the last couple of years, people seem to have discovered that in one particular area they can drive a vehicle right to the water’s
edge,” Mr Davison said. “A lot of people are bird watchers or something quite good, but there’s a lot of nefarious people. “Some years ago, there was a thing in the paper and it said people were making pornographic films on Melbourne trains, and they said, here’s the link. “For whatever reason, I looked at that link and there’s a lot of thumbnails [small photos] and I went: ‘That one looks like my shed!’ And indeed it was.” Mr Davison said he had seen evidence of binge drinking and drug taking, including bongs and bottles left behind. “A car pulled up with four guys inside and smoke pouring out of the car, and rubbish like that,” he said. “But also, other things dumped
– bags of offal, drums of waste oil, household waste, garden waste, general waste.” Mr Davison said half a car was dumped in the creek last week. He did not believe a gate or bollards would stop right-minded people walking in the area. “What you’re stopping is the riff-raff and bogans of the world,” Mr Davison said. “I mean, who in their right mind would dump half a car in the creek?” Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said the fishing village was on the council’s ‘hotspots’ list, and would be inspected and cleaned daily. Dramatic arrest shocks shoppers A 26-year-old Epping man appeared in court yesterday after a dramatic arrest in the Altona Bunnings carpark last Friday. Shocked shoppers said they witnessed a young man in a black Mercedes Benz ram another car before members of the Special Operations Group and plainclothes police swooped, in the carpark off Millers Road about 1pm. Abdul Tiba, 26, appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday for a filing hearing. He is facing 12 charges including kidnapping, imprisoning, assaulting and threatening to kill a woman at Epping on February 8. He is also facing two charges of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. One charge relates to having a firearm on the day of his arrest. He’s also charged with ramming a police car and endangering members of the public by driving dangerously. He was remanded to appear in the same court in May. A woman, who asked that her name be withheld, witnessed the dramatic arrest. “There were undercover cars everywhere, blocking the entrance, and SWAT teams and everything, with guns,” she said.

Support for Safe Schools The mother of a transgender child has slammed criticism by politicians of an anti-bullying program as “ill-informed fear mongering”. The Safe Schools program is under review after Liberal senator Cory Bernardi and a number of Coalition MPs called on the federal government to withdraw funding because of claims the program is indoctrinating students. The Australian Christian Lobby has praised the review as a win against “rainbow ideology”. But the mother, who asked not to be named, said support from the Safe Schools Coalition had been pivotal in helping Newport Lakes Primary School deal sensitively with the gender transition of her son, who was born female. “Those Cory Bernardi comments just make me so angry,” she said. “It comes out of no real knowledge of the young people involved. I just think they are ill-informed, fear mongering, prejudiced and intolerant.” The mother said the Safe Schools Coalition addressed her son’s classmates about tolerance, acceptance and kindness as well as training teachers across the school to field any questions from pupils. “[My son] was asking us quite frequently if he could change names and we agreed that would be OK, so we needed to approach the school,” the mother said. She said Safe Schools Coalition manager Roz Ward had come to the school. “I cannot overstate how helpful it was, just for my son to be happy in himself,” she said.
Newport Lakes principal David Moss said the school had used the services of the Safe Schools Coalition “very effectively”. “We were very shocked when we heard about the review,” he said. “We believe it would be a loss of a significant service to schools.” Other participating inner-west schools include Altona Primary School, Altona Green Primary School, Williamstown Primary School and Footscray City College.

Opposition Leader and Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten labelled Senator Bernardi a “homophobe”. Greens Senator Janet Rice said the attacks on the Safe Schools Coalition by “the homophobic dinosaurs in the Coalition” put the wellbeing of young LGBTI Australians at risk. An Australian Greens petition calling for support for the Safe Schools Coalition has received more than 30,000 signatures. Gellibrand MP Tim Watts said the strong sense of community in the west was undermined when people were targeted and discriminated against. “Programs like Safe Schools are there to protect children from the kinds of discrimination some Liberal Party members of Parliament indulged in this week.” The review is due to report to Education Minister Simon Birmingham in mid-March.

Widow’s memorial wish honoured By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council will now allow cremated remains to be buried on council land – in exceptional circumstances. Mayor Peter Hemphill says the council’s policy has been amended on request from the widow of Angus Walsh along with Chris Hirschfield of the Yarra II memorial trust. “Angus Walsh was the key figure who
tirelessly lobbied various governments and councils to find a site for the memorial to the HMAS Yarra II,” Cr Hemphill said. “That memorial eventually found a home in Newport Park, quite appropriately at the mouth of the Yarra River. This memorial would not have been erected had it not been for the efforts of Angus.” Mr Walsh’s ashes will be interred at the memorial. “A precedent was set some years ago

when the ashes of the last survivor of the HMAS Yarra II, Geoff Bromilow (Chris Hirschfield’s father), were buried at the base of the flagpole at the memorial,” Cr Hemphill said. “The story
of the HMAS Yarra II is one of pure gallantry during World War II. On the first Sunday every March, relatives and friends of the crew of the Yarra come to Newport to honour the brave men, who were either killed or survived [bombardment from two Japanese ships] in naval battle. It was a David and Goliath battle, in which the Yarra had no hope. Angus Walsh organised and ran the annual memorial service until he was no longer able.”
Grateful to be helping Altona Meadows resident Katharine Gronow is riding in Sunday’s MS Melbourne Cycle to raise funds and awareness about this disease. The ride raises money to support people living with multiple sclerosis, the most common neurological disease in young adults. Ms Gronow is riding as part of team Katamandah Kick Longs, which has grown from three cyclists in its first ride in 2011 to seven this year. “We’ve had MS in our family and, for me, it’s about being grateful for our bodies that we have and showing that by using them,” she said. “It’s staggering to think that every working day, four people are newly diagnosed with this chronic disease, which can strike anyone at any time and the symptoms vary so widely. “For instance, can you imagine waking up one day unable to do the everyday things you would usually take for granted? “Like not being able to see properly, or at all? You physically can’t get out of bed, can’t walk to the phone to call someone – anyone – or live a life without pain.”
Ms Gronow said others were welcome to join the team, which has a fundraising target of $1500. For the first time since the event’s inception in 2006, children can join in. Cyclists can choose to ride a three, seven, 30 or 50-kilometre course, with all routes starting and finishing at Flemington Racecourse. MS chief executive Robyn Hunter said that over the past 10 years the event had raised more than $4 million for people living with multiple sclerosis. “Whether you’re riding a two-wheeler or a tricycle, an eBike or a handcycle, you can help expose this invisible disease by taking part in the MS Melbourne Cycle,” she said. Altona Meadows performer Carolyn Hanna (pictured) is wary of giving away too many details but invites the curious to join what promises to be a memorable journey. “This is a large-scale live artwork in a mystery location,” she said. “Some of the performances are in rooms, some are in other spaces.” Audience members are immersed in a “beautiful audio walk” as they stroll through streets to the mystery hotel. Jobs flood to wool store By Benjamin Millar Hundreds of jobs are moving to ‘The Dream Factory’ in Footscray as Melbourne’s first major tech start-up opens in an iconic former wool store. The refurbished 1920s building overlooking the Maribyrnong River is currently the global head office of travel book publisher Lonely Planet Publications, which will vacate it in coming months. The new hub was launched on Tuesday as a home to businesses and not-for-profit organisations focused on design, technology and social change. The anchor tenants include collaborative co-working space Inspire9. Other tenants will include Engineers Without Borders Australia and teachers’ associations including the School Libraries Association of Victoria and the Design and Technology Teachers’ Association. More than 550 jobs will relocate to the building by next January, but about 2200 square metres of the 7300 square metres of office space is still up for grabs. The four-storey former woolshed will feature Australia’s first Tesla industrial batteries, which will store solar energy from the building’s roof. The roof is covered by one of the largest rooftop photovoltaic solar systems in Australia. Victoria’s Small Business, Innovation and Trade Minister Philip Dalidakis said the new venture strengthened the state’s reputation as the place to do business. “It’s great to see Victoria’s value for coworking spaces and incubators expanding beyond Melbourne’s CBD to support start-ups and social businesses in the west,” Mr Dalidakis said.

Bail, ban for hoax attacks Three brothers who staged and filmed hoax attacks on members of the public, including a bomb hoax in Altona, have been charged and put on strict bail conditions preventing them from uploading similar videos online. The brothers, aged 20, 18 and 16, were taken into custody last Thursday over a series of prankster videos posted online, including one showing a bomb hoax at Altona beach. They were later charged with public nuisance, possessing a prohibited weapon and behaving in an offensive manner in a public place. The three brothers from South Morang have said they produce the videos to make fun of attitudes towards Middle Eastern people. Assistant Commissioner Ross Guenther said police would pursue having the videos taken off social media, but he said the videos were held offshore. Police Commissioner Graham Ashton told 3AW the trio would be charged “with whatever they can be charged with”. He said any profit from the videos could be confiscated if they were proceeds of crime. The two adults have been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on May 20. Bail conditions state they must not produce, upload or publish any offensive images or video on social media. A 16-year-old boy was bailed to appear at a children’s court at a later date.

Pop-up plan for night life By Benjamin Millar A “hidden gem” in the heart of Footscray could be given a new lease on life with the arrival of a pop-up cafe. Maribyrnong council is seeking an operator to run a cafe or bar in Maddern Square from a converted shipping container. A recent council report found Maddern Square was underused and perceived to be unsafe. A call last October for expressions of interest to activate the square received no formal response, but feedback indicated construction
and fit-out was too risky and costly for the location. Operators of the container cafe-bar will be offered cheap rent but must detail how they could deliver “innovative community engagement activities” to attract new visitors to Footscray. “There is also potential that, once fully operational with these offerings, the space could be included in future food and wine festival activities,” a council report noted. Although the existing open space is now a ‘dry’ zone with alcohol consumption banned, the council will consider allowing the sale of
alcoholic beverages in conjunction with food sales within a designated area, if approved by Liquor Licensing Victoria. The initial lease would run from May to July with an option for an extra two months. Cr Michael Clarke said Maddern Square was a hidden gem and the council needed to do more to make Footscray livelier at night. “I don’t think there is any other precinct so close to Melbourne CBD that’s so underutilised, particularly at night,” he said. Sandy to get his memorial A community group campaigning for recognition of one of Maribyrnong’s most beloved war heroes has welcomed a breakthrough in its struggle to create a garden memorial. The Friends of Sandy and the Australian Light Horse Inc have spent close to 30 years working to establish a lasting memorial to Sandy, the only horse of the 169,000 sent to World War I to return to Australia. The group was awarded $17,622 to fund a memorial under the Anzac Centenary local grants program but had long been denied access to the section of the Maribyrnong Defence site where Sandy was buried. A Defence spokeswoman said agreement had been reached for the memorial to be erected near the Fischer Stable entry on a hilltop. “The timeline for the design and development of the memorial is a matter for the Friends of Sandy and Australian Light Horse,” she said. “Once the design has been finalised, Defence will arrange access for the installation.” Friends of Sandy president Elaine Brogan said signs were promising that a memorial to Sandy was now within reach. “All we have always wanted is recognition for Sandy, who represents all those horses who went to war and never returned,” she said. “What better place to have it than at the top of the hill where Sandy ended his life?” Benjamin Millar

VCAT rejects 10-storey plan

By Goya Dmytryshchak Steamrail Victoria will reveal the inside of its Newport workshops, built in 1885, for three public open days during the Labour Day long weekend from March 12 to 14. Steamrail, a not-for-profit organisation, restores vintage steam, diesel and electric locomotives and carriages at its workshops off Champion Road. Marketing manager Cathie Skelton said the group had seven Victorian Railways’ steam locomotives, six heritage diesel electric locomotives, various suburban electric rolling trains and 29 heritage carriages. “The workshops were the birthplace of most of the Victorian Railways’ steam engines and carriages from the 1880s to the 1950s,” she said. “The workshops also produced military equipment during the Second World War. “The workshops were a major employer and testament to the skills of Victoria’s manufacturing industry.” During the open days, people will be able to see “Polly”, the first steam locomotive built at the workshops – in 1893. All engines will be on display and working, including the M232, the last to be built at the workshops, in 1959. Carriages will be open for inspection, including seating carriages from 1910 and 1940 and sleeping carriages from the famous Southern Aurora, Overland and the 1910 Adelaide express. A proposal for a 10-storey, 600-dwelling development on the former Caltex terminal in South Kingsville has been knocked back. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) last week refused the master plan, lodged by Newport Properties, for land at 38-48 Blackshaws Road and 24 Sutton Street. Hobsons Bay council did not make a decision on the plan within the prescribed period, but later resolved that development on the site should be capped at six storeys and 420 dwellings. VCAT said a key reason for refusing the plan was that high-density to the north of the site was unacceptable. The northern boundary is next to the national freight rail line and beyond that lies the Spotswood Maintenance Centre (SMC), which services locomotives and is of national and state significance. VCAT senior members Ian Potts and Laurie Hewet said they had concerns about levels of amenity for future residents of the proposed development and about the impact of residential development on SMC operations. They said in their decision: “The significance of the SMC . . . heightens the necessity for careful consideration on the scale and form of development on this site.” They said the site could take 600 dwellings in future and surrounding roads could cope with resultant traffic. MY PLACE Footscray through and through, recent police officer of the year Ian Brown tells Benjamin Millar he is enjoying more time to explore the area following a stellar 50-year career. I was born and bred in Footscray. I went to Geelong Road state and Footscray tech, then I went and did further education at the police depot in St Kilda Road. I often say you can take the boy out of Footscray but you can’t take Footscray out of the boy. It’s a fabulous place. I think we’re very lucky with the diverse community we have here. What’s an early memory you have of growing up in the area? I was only a young fella when the Bulldogs won their first and only flag in 1954. I’ve followed them ever since. Around 1960, I was a lolly boy at the old Trocadero theatre and the old Barkly Theatre. I would have been about 13. I would get there about 10am and we would make the drinks, make the ice-creams. You would do a matinee and an intermediate and a night session. So I would be there 10am until midnight sometimes but it was all good fun. I used to go to Poons and I’d get three or four steamed dim-sims and eat them on the way home. They were all great people. Describe an experience that sums up the area for you. For a number of years, on the Wednesday before Good Friday, we used to have a tin rattle in the Footscray Mall. We would probably raise $2500 or $3000. What used to impress me is that people who basically had no money, or very little money, would come up and give you $5. We had it in Federation Square one year and
well-dressed people would give you 20 cents. It’s amazing how out here people would dig into their pockets for the kids. It’s absolutely fabulous. What has been your approach to policing? I always say to the young people to treat with respect the people you come into contact with, the offenders, because it’s very important. To me it’s paramount. We are public servants and we do rely on the community to help us. You’ve got to set standards, be fair to people. What’s something people don’t realise about the job? We’re only human. We have kids, we have families, we hurt, we bleed. We love, we hurt. Just because we’re police, doesn’t mean we’re superhuman. How has the area changed in your time? When I was a young fella we had the Italian and English migrants, then you had the influx of the Vietnamese, the Yugoslavs. Now you’ve got the Horn of Africa people, the Syrian people. You get bad eggs in every community but at the end of the day the community here is good. It’s one of the best-kept secrets, the western suburbs. Here in Footscray, some of the eateries are unbelievable. If people looked, there are that many things they can do, a lot of it for nothing. It’s not like some towns where you have to be there 20 or 30 years to be accepted … come to Footscray and you’re basically accepted from day one.

On Saturday, March 5, seafood lovers can tuck into ocean bounty at Seaworks Williamstown, the history-rich site of Melbourne’s original port where fishermen still bring their catches to the pier. Headline festival acts are local chefs’ cooking demos, six restaurants’ signature dishes, boutique beers, wines and ciders, kids’ entertainment, food trucks, and live jazz, blues and folk music. Bay views will form a magnificent backdrop to a buzzing foodie festival, part of Melbourne Food and Wine and Eat Drink Westside.

No matter how pesky, seagulls do one thing well: put us in the mood for good fish ‘n’ chips, with a side serve of sea salt tang. D’Lish Fish will bring their traditional seaside nosh to Pier to Plate. Old-style Greek food proves its seafood chops, courtesy of the crew at Santorini, who regularly plate up the likes of local mussels in tomato/wine salsa topped with feta. Staying around the Med, Groove Lounge has a menu-stayer of pan fried king prawns, Spanish onion, garlic in a paprika oil, with saffron rice and salad. The Strand has a refined style, where seared Cone Bay barra touching elbows with potato puree, caramelized red onion, baby spinach and red wine jus is a menu pointer. Ragusa brings authentic Croatian fare - think spanner crab with fennel and pomegranate, a style hint from what sits on its regular menu. And Pizza D’Asporto does pizza and pasta in the real Italian way. Linguini with king prawns, zucchini and mint or everyone’s fave carb topped with ocean bounty are a couple of their regular tricks.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a little gem tucked away in Maribyrnong The Mitchell Avenue shops are tucked away and, no doubt, of little interest to the traffic hordes scooting by on Ballarat Road and Churchill Avenue. But there are quite a lot of residents in the area, including a bunch of students. So it figures that a cafe could, and should, do well on the strip, joining Los Latinos, a Vietnamese place and a South American bakery. Jack B. Nimble is that cafe, replacing a long disused bakery. Jack is all done out in light wood and is a sweet place for lunch. The longish breakfast list features all sorts of imaginative line-ups, starring such ingredients as house-smoked fish, grilled asparagus, white pudding and cauliflower. The lunch roll-out is much briefer – just a daily salad, two sandwiches and a pasta are on the blackboard. So … we each choose one of the sandwiches at a fine $10 each. A side of the salad can be had with sanger for $4. We’re tempted, as the mixed grain number on display looks fine – but the presence of pumpkin makes it a non-starter for us. Bennie’s roast beef with caramelised onions, sacmorza (a cow milk cheese) and tomato relish is a good one. The beef is rare and the cheese is gooey. But my number with fish cakes, kale,

SPORT Shock result presents Druids with home semi-final Druids Cricket Club made an unlikely swoop on a top-two finish on the final day of the VTCA north-west division season. The boys from West Footscray had a nailbiting eight-run win over West Coburg at Shorten Reserve on Saturday to book their place in the finals. Then word came through that second-placed Airport West-St Christophers had been upset by Haig Fawkner. That sealed a home semi-final for Druids, who will meet West Saints for a spot in the grand final. “We played Airport West earlier in the year and they beat us pretty easily on their home wicket,” Druids captain-coach Shane Windridge told Star Weekly. “So playing on our home ground is an advantage to us. We know how to play that wicket and it was important to get that homeground advantage.” It was a touch and go Saturday for the Druids, who had no inkling of what was happening at other venues and only tunnel vision for a victory over West Coburg.

Andrews, the former captain-coach, has a pep in his step after breaking from cricket for an overseas holiday mid-summer. “In cricket, players go through ups and downs throughout the season so a lot of guys are pretty mentally tired towards the end of the year,” Windridge said. “He had a little break in the middle of the season, so he’s definitely our freshest player. The holiday worked in his favour.” If not for Brennan, the Druids would be faced with an away semi-final. He opened the innings and batted for 72 overs as the Druids posted 178. Fury over ‘heinous act’ By Lance Jenkinson A $5000 reward has been offered for information to help catch vandals who ripped up the Skinner Reserve cricket pitch at the weekend. Victorian Turf Cricket Association president Steve McNamara is hoping the cash incentive will “get somebody talking”. “I’m sure there’s people out there that know exactly what happened,” he said. “It’s the most heinous act I’ve seen in cricket in my 40 years of involvement.” Kingsville Baptists, who play out of Skinner Reserve in Braybrook, arrived at their home ground on Saturday morning to find the cricket pitch had been dug up and oil poured on top of the surface. The vandalism resulted in the second day of the Kingsville’s match against Sunshine Heights being called off and denied it its rightful chance of reaching the final four in the west A1 division. Had Kingsville chased down the 187 target from a strong position of 1-46, it would have made the finals after results around the grounds went in its favour. Kingsville missed out on fourth spot by just 2.37 points, a margin that could easily have been erased if the day’s cricket had gone ahead. “I’m presuming it’s someone in our association,” McNamara said. “It’s somebody obviously with cricket knowledge – knowing that [the vandalism] would certainly do the maximum damage to ensure the game wouldn’t proceed. “The wicket was dug up from popping crease to popping crease right down the middle, and there was oil poured into it so you certainly wouldn’t suggest it was a local kid misbehaving.” McNamara has been in contact with Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia, which are “similarly upset”. Sunshine police will review CCTV footage from around the Skinner Reserve complex. “We’re going to pursue this to the very end,” McNamara said. “If we find a club involved, needless to say, there will be implications. I think you’d have to expect they would be expelled from the VTCA at the very least.” The incident is likely to lead to rule changes in the off-season. Under current competition rules, there are no grounds for the second day’s play to be postponed or moved. The vandalism has left the players and members of Kingsville Baptists devastated.

Matt Underwood had shown glimpses of his potential this summer to justify his position in Footscray Edgewater’s first XI. Then, on Saturday, the young opening batsmen unleashed his full repertoire to repay the selectors’ faith, amassing 133 off 291 balls to lead the Bulldogs to a competitive 260 against Monash Tigers in a potentially do-or-die final-round match at Central Reserve. Underwood, who has represented Victoria at under-19 level, underlined himself as a star of the future in a brilliant performance. He featured in a crucial 118-run second-wicket partnership with English import Dan Hodgson (50). The only other meaningful contributions for the Dogs came from Dylan Kight (25) and some late runs from the tail. With Northcote and Essendon – the two sides just outside the eight – still in contention for victory in their final-round matches, the eighth-placed Bulldogs will almost certainly need to defend their total in order to reach the finals.

Not surprisingly, that is exactly where George wants to go. “I have really enjoyed being a part of that and I found that I have improved on my game,” she said. “I want to do the best I can. Eventually I want to make the WNBL. It is the highest level you can get to in Australia.” George has been named as a monthly nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. Late run finishes Reds By Lance Jenkinson The best part about competing in the nationwide FFA Cup is the chance to face teams from different divisions and competitions along the way. Laverton Park met Boroondara-Carey for the first time in the first round of the cup on Saturday and was supremely impressed by what the visitors served up at Laverton Park Reserve. “They run a lot, that’s for sure,” Reds coach Vince De La Plaza told Star Weekly. “They’re a young, fit side and they don’t give you time on the ball. They put pressure on you.” That pressure eventually told on the scoreboard, and although Boroondara-Carey took the best part of 75 minutes to break down the Reds, they struck twice in the final 15 minutes to eliminate their hosts 2-0. De La Plaza is not thrilled having to return to the pre-season friendly circuit for a month before the start of the state league 5 season, but he knows his players gave it their all over the past fortnight, which included an FFA Cup qualifier win over Meadow Park. “It was pretty tough,” he said. “We did OK, we fought hard, but we’ve still got a few young kids playing and haven’t got the full squad yet. “They’re struggling to keep up with the pace of the game, which is understandable. As we get further into the season, they might step up, but they’re not ready yet.” One youngster who has likely earned a spot in the first team for round one is Luis Bustos, who impressed with his toughness in a central midfield role. “He’s one kid who’s standing out,” De La Plaza said. “He had a good game last week and he fought hard today. He’s a tough player, he gets in and tackles and wins a lot of hard balls.” Christian Bustos was the other standout, hardly letting anything go by him in defence. But it was a sour end to the day for Maurice Vera, who limped off with a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, Altona North had a heartbreaking elimination from the FFA Cup, losing 5-4 on penalties to Epping City at Harvest Home Reserve. Neither side could find the back of the net for 120 minutes, but Epping held its nerve in the shootout. Also in the FFA Cup, Melbourne City came from a goal down to beat Surf Coast 2-1 away and will be at home to Epping City in the second round on Saturday. Maribyrnong Greens advanced with a 3-1 win over Old Xavarians to earn a second-round match away at Boroondara-Carey. But Melbourne Lions were eliminated in a 6-0 loss to Moreland Eagles.
IN THE DOGHOUSE finals start this weekend and one potential big match-up is off the table, with Hoppers Crossing and Werribee avoiding each other in the first week of sub-district. Hoppers finished the season with a nail-biting loss to Elsternwick, falling three runs short chasing 207 to finish fifth on the ladder. They now play away at second-placed Caulfield this weekend. Werribee had one of its worst batting performances of the year, all out for 118, to surrender to Ormond and finish fourth; it now plays Yarraville at Yarraville. Werribee has three of the top 10 batsmen in the competition: Shaun Dean, Matt Dean and Tim O’Brien, as well as Jono Burton, who’s been on fire with the ball, taking 16 wickets since breaking into the first XI after Christmas. Werribee blasted Yarraville in the first game of the season at Yarraville with Matt Dean making 132 and brother Shaun an unbeaten 91. Playing away is a worry for both sides, but especially Hoppers against the powerful Caulfield. Good luck to both Hoppers and Werribee and let’s hope they can meet in a final at some stage.

couple of local football clubs are in big trouble heading into the new season. One is West Footscray, which has been around since 1926 and has played in the past two grand finals. Unfortunately, the club has lost a lot of players and had two senior coaches resign. Nick Diker was first to go and now Scott Lobb has quit just five weeks before the season begins. The club is looking for players and, provided you’re capable, you can be sure of getting a game given the current numbers at training. Interested players should turn up to Shorten Reserve any Monday or Wednesday night. The club is holding a season launch and anyone who cares about West Footscray’s future and wants to be a part of it should be at 540 Barkly Street, Footscray, from 7pm this Saturday. fans are smiling after what they saw in week one of the NAB Challenge. Forget the result, it was the way they played that made me happy. I was very pleased with Tom Campbell, who I believe is in for a big season. We’ve waited patiently for him to produce the goods and I think this year he will emerge as a regular senior player. There were plenty of signs throughout her early career that Najvada George was destined for the top. In primary school, George made the Victorian netball and basketball sides as a bottom age player before captaining both in her top age year.
