It’s pet rego time, again The clock is ticking for inner-west pet owners to re-register their feline friends and canine companions. All dogs and cats must have their registration renewed with their council by April 10 each year. Owners face fines of about $300 for failing to register and microchip all dogs and cats over the age of three months. Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said registration fees fund a range of animal services, including after-hours rescue of injured animals, helping to reunite lost pets with their owners, maintaining off-lead parks and programs to prevent animal attacks. Maribyrnong council plans to mail renewal notices to all current pet owners by the end of February. Anyone who does not receive a renewal notice is urged to contact 9688 0200. Fines for council punch A Yarraville man received a good behaviour bond and was ordered to pay more than $1200 after pleading guilty to assaulting two Maribyrnong councillors at a council meeting in November. Appearing before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday, Frank Amaru, 61, was ordered to pay $500 to anti-violence campaign White Ribbon over the assaults on councillors Nam Quach and Grant Miles at the conclusion of a fiery council meeting. He was also ordered to pay $749 to Cr Quach for breaking his glasses when he slammed him to the floor at the November 17 meeting. No conviction was recorded. The police prosecutor told the court Amaru,

a labourer and concreter, was agitated and irate when he crossed the gallery to where Cr Miles was sitting next to Cr Quach. Amaru told Cr Miles he would “wipe that smile off your face” before punching him in the face. Cr Quach attempted to restrain Amaru in a bear-hug but, after grappling with him, was thrown to the ground, sustaining lacerations to his bottom lip, a sore head and broken glasses. Amaru turned himself into Footscray police station at 11am the following morning, telling police he went to speak to Cr Miles and then “lost it”. He told police he was “lost in the moment” when he threw Cr Quach to the ground and was remorseful for his actions.

Defence lawyer Robert Galbally, representing Amaru, told the court his client was a passionate hard-working Yarraville resident and that his actions were entirely out of character. Mr Galbally said the assaults occurred in the context of widespread community opposition to the installation of parking meters in Yarraville by the council. “The majority of the community were opposed to them going in. “He was upset at an apparent conflict between the decision made at this public meeting and the public’s view, as he knew it. He just saw that this was not justice unfolding, the way in which the meeting unfolded.” Mr Galbally said Amaru was also likely to have a suppressed hatred of parking machines after his son accrued heavy fines seven years

ago for parking outside Alfred Hospital while he was “close to death” for 74 days after contracting Legionnaire’s disease. In placing Amaru on a 12-month good behaviour bond, magistrate Timothy Bourke told him he must have known passions would be high at the meeting. “You were against the idea of the parking meters going in, but we live in a democratic society – if you’re not happy, vote them out.” Mr Bourke said the assaults were “just appalling for a man of your age”. Cr Quach told Star Weekly he was glad Amaru had shown remorse and pleaded guilty. “I hope and pray we don’t see anything like this in Australian politics again,” he said. ■ Councillors

Meters stay off as councillors row By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong councillors remain at loggerheads over paid parking in Yarraville as losses stemming from the impasse head towards the million-dollar mark. Councillors last Tuesday voted to keep parking meters turned off in Yarraville village and central Footscray until a new parking policy is prepared in coming months. An estimated $600,000 has already been foregone since paid parking was suspended in December. Last week’s council meeting revealed clear

animosity remaining between Labor and independent councillors over the introduction of parking meters to Yarraville last August. Cr Nam Quach said there had been “some very disappointing elements” to the 18-month campaign against the meters. “I fully acknowledge that the dynamics of the paid parking have some peculiarities. However, the overall result is that … [when the meters were operating] visitations rose,” he said. Cr Quach called for a draft policy “that is applied to the whole city, not excluding areas where there is extreme violence and vandalism and conjecture”.

Cr Michael Clarke accused Cr Quach of being misleading, given the biggest increase in parking turnover was during Sundays when parking was free. “I really hoped we were going to [move] from what was armchair conjecture to an evidence-based approach,” he said. “You clutch at straws, looking at any piece of evidence to support your own argument, to try and put lipstick on a pig.” Cr Grant Miles said there was merit to the ‘thermostat’ model suggested by transport policy specialists Phillip Boyle and Associates in their parking report. “We can use that in Yarraville, in terms of early in the morning

when they were under-used,” he said. Cr Martin Zakharov linked parking fees with the four Yarraville businesses that closed during the paid parking trial period. “I’m not saying that was the only issue, but you don’t normally find that many businesses in a fairly vibrant shopping strip disappearing in that period of time,” Cr Zakharov said. Cr Sarah Carter said a new policy was two years overdue and could have saved “years of heartache” for council, residents and traders. Mayor Cameron McDonald said the parking policy would take the issue away from councillors and hand it to the chief executive.

Police hunt knife-wielding robber An armed robber struck twice at Central Square shopping centre in Altona Meadows last week. The centre’s owner confirmed the TAB was hit soon after opening on Thursday morning, followed by the Aldi supermarket. Customers queuing at the supermarket reported being shaken after a man armed with a 30-centimetre knife robbed two registers. Uni in detention protest By Benjamin Millar A growing chorus of protest against Australia’s treatment of asylum seekers is building in Melbourne’s west. Educators, grandmothers and refugee advocates descended on the office of Gellibrand MP Tim Watts last week to express dissatisfaction with both major political parties over their support for mandatory offshore detention of asylum seekers, including children. The protest came in the wake of a High Court decision earlier this month affirming the government’s right to send asylum seekers to

detention centres on Nauru and Manus Island. Following the decision, Star Weekly reported that offshore processing was backed by both Gellibrand MP Tim Watts and federal Labor leader and Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten. More than 120 Victoria University staff and students signed a joint letter presented to Mr Watts on Thursday, asking him to follow Premier Daniel Andrews’ example and lobby for the 267 asylum-seeker men, women and children now in Australia not to be sent back to Nauru or Manus Island. VU teacher and letter co-organiser Margarita Windisch said thousands of people had been

rallying across the country calling on the federal government and Opposition to ‘Let Them Stay’. “We … are very upset about the situation and upset about the fact our local representative Tim Watts has come out in support of offshore detention,” she said. “We think he’s out of step with community sentiment.” Mr Watts said while he welcomed people’s compassion, a “regional solution” was needed to stop “a human tragedy in the seas”. “Reasonable people of goodwill can look at the same set of facts in this complex issue and come to a different view.”

Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children rallied outside the Footscray office of Gellibrand MP Tim Watts on Friday afternoon, waving #LetThemStay placards at peak-hour traffic on busy Geelong Road. ‘Worth a million trips to Rome’ Altona resident and The Project co-host Meshel Laurie says crowdfunding to pay for abuse survivors to travel to Rome will also be used to provide more mental health services in Ballarat. More than $200,000 has been raised by a GoFundMe page, set up by Ms Laurie, far exceeding the $55,000 target. Cardinal George Pell has said he is too sick to fly to Australia to testify at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Ms Laurie said a chance meeting with several survivors in Ballarat prompted her to help raise money for them to fly to Rome to see Cardinal Pell give evidence. “My only concern is the survivors, some of whom feel as though they really want to witness his testimony for their own healing,” she said. “The beauty of raising so much money is that it’s kind of gone beyond that now and it’s very much about ongoing mental health services to survivors in Ballarat.” It is not certain whether survivors will be allowed to attend the Rome hearing, with the commission yet to determine arrangements for Cardinal Pell’s testimony. Ms Laurie said it became clear within 24 hours that the crowdfunding had exceeded the $55,000 required to send 15 people to Rome. “Now it’s really about very tangible objectives like cutting waiting lists for mental health services for survivors in Ballarat,” she said. “There are people on suicide watch who are having to wait 10 weeks before they can see 10021081-05

Weeding out a problem Altona Community Garden members have become part of the solution to the suburb’s seaweed problem. Seaholme member Peter Weaver obtained a permit from Hobsons Bay council last week to remove seaweed from the municipality’s coastline to use as garden fertiliser. So far this financial year, the council has collected more than 1000 tonnes of seaweed. Most is sent to Wyndham landfill at a cost of $90.80 a tonne, plus GST and other costs. Mr Weaver said he collected about 400 kilograms of seaweed a year and put it directly on his garden about 20 centimetres thick. “My garden has not looked better,” he said. “Microbes and worms feast on the seaweed and it doesn’t smell at all.

“People take pleasure in attacking the council over the seaweed and the council spends money to combat a natural phenomenon. “The population of Hobsons Bay is about 85,000. If we each took 10 kilograms of seaweed a year, that would be 850 tonnes and a saving of $85,000 the council could spend in other areas.” Free six-month permits are available from the council, with a 10-bag limit. Councillor Sandra Wilson said members of the public were encouraged to collect seaweed from the beach to use on their gardens. “This is a fantastic example of grassroots environmental action and I’m sure their gardens will be grateful,” she said. Tales woven in life’s fabric Brazilian storyteller Cadu Cinelli will visit Williamstown’s Loom Room next month. In 1998, Mr Cinelli co-founded Os Tapetes Contadores de Historias, or The Carpet Storytellers, a group in Rio de Janeiro that makes and uses carpet and cloth items to tell popular tales from all over the world. They’ve performed widely, including in Central America, Portugal and Spain. New dawn for night soil station By Goya Dmytryshchak Nestled under the West Gate Bridge and behind Scienceworks sits a 19th century industrial relic, its architectural grandeur a seeming contrast with its former purpose. The heritage-listed Spotswood Pumping Station, built by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works in 1897, once handled all of Melbourne’s human waste or “night soil” as it was euphemistically called in earlier days. Painstakingly restored and maintained by volunteers, the pumping station has opened for daily guided tours until March 24. The tours will feature a steam engine in action. Museum Victoria senior engineering and transport curator Mathew Churchward says Melbourne’s booming 1850s population lacked a decent sanitation system. “In the 1870s, 1880s there’d been a series of outbreaks of infectious diseases … causing lots of illness and death,” he said. “The solution was seen to create a city-wide sewerage system which would collect all the industrial and domestic sewage and bring it to a central site where it could be treated.” The station ceased operation in 1965. Since then, the building has been sought out by filmmakers and tourists. It was transformed into the Halls of Justice for the original Mad Max in 1979 and featured as a 1920s factory in the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries TV series. Much of the station’s machinery hasn’t changed much since the era of fictional detective Phryne Fisher. Volunteers have painstakingly restored several of the station’s steam engines. Engine No.5, built by Hathorn, Davey and Co in Leeds, England, was brought out by ship and is believed to be the oldest of its type in the world. Councils will wear rates cap Inner-west residents will be spared an above-inflation rise in their council rates despite claims that capping increases will rip about $140 million out of Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong council budgets in the next decade. Hobsons Bay’s current average rates bill of $2386 and Maribyrnong’s of $2257 are already the third and fourth highest averages in the state, well above the $1819 statewide average. Local government minister Natalie Hutchins said capping the annual rate increase at 2.5 per cent from July would improve the transparency and accountability of Victorian councils. “The fair-go rates cap doesn’t stop councils from taking on new projects,” Ms Hutchins said. “Instead, it ensures councils are listening to local residents and responding to their needs.” Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said he expected the council’s approach would be to see how things went in the first year under rate-capping. “Council has already been reducing its running costs over recent years, which have put it in a reasonable position to be able to maintain current service levels to the Hobsons Bay community in a rate-capped environment, certainly over the first couple of years,” he said. “Rate-capping will rip about $60 million in revenue out of [the

Maribyrnong council notified the Essential Services Commission earlier this year it was considering applying for an exemption to the rates cap. But mayor Cameron McDonald and chief executive Stephen Wall told last Tuesday night’s council meeting the council would abide by the 2.5 per cent rise cap. Mr Wall said the council would need to prioritise spending so infrastructure could be adequately maintained and renewed. “The estimated revenue lost against the long term financial strategy is calculated to be in the vicinity of $1 million … in the first year,” he said. “Our predictions show that rate-capping will create a loss of more than $80 million over 10 years, which will have a major impact on council’s ability to deliver services at what we would consider an acceptable level.”

Rhythm of life in verse A former Footscray mayor has realised a lifelong ambition by publishing his first book of poetry. Ted Logan, 83, has penned “a variety of verse” loosely based on suburban observations, cricketing history, his early years as a school teacher in Gippsland in the 1950s and his more recent experiences conducting more than 5000 weddings as a civil celebrant. The councillor of 15 years and three-time mayor of former Footscray council said the narrative poems in Poetry Potpourri have all been written over the past four years. “I thought I’m getting on in years, so it was time to do this. These were all the things I thought were important enough to write about. I have tended to pick out something unusual.”

Poems range from the burning down of the state saw mill and the Queens’ pronunciation of Yallourn, to observations of old men shopping in supermarkets and trips on the Footscray-Moonee Ponds tram. “I’ve tried to get a few local things in. I try to keep the poems light with a bit of humour. As a teacher, my contention is poetry is … meant to be spoken and listened to, rather than read.” Mr Logan said that’s why the book is written in rhyming verse, reflecting the poets he adored as a child, such as Byron and Yeats. School, residents cross paths By Benjamin Millar A Braybrook school and its neighbours are tussling over the future of a public walkway. Caroline Chisholm Catholic College says the strip of land at the end of the Treloar Crescent cul-de-sac has for years attracted drug use and dumped rubbish but residents say the walkway is the safest way to reach nearby shops and playgrounds. Maribyrnong council last week began the process of discontinuing the “road” and selling the 477-square-metre parcel of land to the Roman Catholic Trusts Corporation for the Diocese of Melbourne on behalf of the school for $209,000. A report on the proposal noted the sale could improve safety for school students but force some residents to walk an extra 250 metres to reach shops on Churchill Avenue. College principal Marco DiCesare said the walkway had long created problems, forcing school maintenance staff to pick up used syringes and dumped rubbish. “We have been working with the council on this for a number of years, to make this area safer,” he said. Mr DiCesare said the sale of the walkway would enable students to reach the school’s trades training centre and swimming pool without having to pass through locked gates. “We are part of the community,” he said. “This isn’t just about us – it’s about making the whole area safer for everyone.” Resident Kate Habgood said the street’s families use the shortcut each day to avoid busy Churchill Avenue. “It’s a right of way for the use of everyone, it exists for the benefit of the residents and I don’t really understand why the school would take this step,” she said.

Ms Habgood said she was worried about children being forced to spend more time near Churchill Avenue. “This walkway is much safer for small children,” she said. “I would like to see the walkway remain where it is.” Council corporate services director Celia Haddock said the sale of the walkway would allow the school to join two sites.

“This is likely to improve safety for students,” she said. “Council has planned works to upgrade Kindersmith Reserve and part of the upgrade works include the construction of additional access paths into the reserve and an access path linking Treloar Crescent to Darnley Street.” The council is accepting comments for or against the proposal until March 18.

Hunt on for stolen anchor A 100-year-old anchor has been stolen from outside the Pirates Tavern at Williamstown. The anchor was stolen between 7pm Sunday and 4pm Monday from outside the small tavern, tucked behind Seaworks at 82 Nelson Place. It has been valued at $1500, but the anchor is priceless to the Williamstown Maritime Association (WMA), which runs the tavern. WMA president Maurice Boyd said he felt “sick in the stomach” after finding the anchor was gone. “It’s part of the place,” he said. “It’s a thing that everybody looks at … they see that anchor there and to just suddenly find it missing, your stomach sinks. “It was dredged up when they were dredging out in the bay and the dredging company donated that and another one. “It’s at least 100 years old because it’s an admiralty-pattern one. “It would take three to four people to lift it up onto the back of a ute or a truck. You’d need a forklift or a ute with one of those hydraulic cranes on the back.” Mr Boyd believes the anchor was stolen for someone’s personal display. “It’s not worth anything from a scrap point of view because it’s rusty,” he said. “I would be inclined to think it could end up in their backyard or in a man cave.” Anyone with information can call Mr Boyd on 0413 914 040 or Williamstown police on 9393 9555. Happy end to a long ride By Goya Dmytryshchak Four years ago, Rebecca Berry couldn’t walk a metre without assistance. Next month, the Altona Meadows double lung transplant recipient will cycle 600 kilometres from Warrnambool to Melbourne as part of the Tour de Transplant. By her side will be her fiance, David Floyd, who was her carer before she had her transplant. Ms Berry, 31, received a transplant in 2012, seven years after being diagnosed with an acute lung disease. Before the transplant, she was unable to dress or shower herself and relied on an oxygen tank to breathe. Ms Berry said she was determined not to take her second chance for granted and wanted to help others. The ride aims to raise $150,000 for the Second Chance Accommodation Program, which provides post-surgery apartments near The Alfred hospital for heart and lung transplant families. Children in Australia needing heart and lung transplants must come to The Alfred, as do adult transplant patients from Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory and southern NSW. Following surgery, transplant recipients and their carers are required to spend three months in a rehabilitation program at the hospital but must find accommodation. Ms Berry will be doing the Tour de Transplant in honour of her late friend, Annie. Ms Berry said the Second Chance program wasn’t around for Annie, who lived three hours from Melbourne. “We’re riding for a dear friend who passed away 18 months after her lung transplant,” she

said. “She was unable to use the accommodation because it wasn’t available at the time. “So we’re riding for her and others so they are able to use the accommodation program if needed. I’m hoping to raise $2500, which is enough for one family to stay for three months.”

Units boom for Footscray An apartment boom is on the horizon for Footscray, with 1371 new units approved last year. Footscray unit approvals in 2015 were the highest in Melbourne outside the CBD, Docklands and Southbank, according to building data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. And the pace of development is likely to continue, with developer Banco Properties recently paying $22 million for the 1.4 hectare Ryco Hydraulics site on Whitehall Street, where shops, offices and 507 units are planned in five towers ranging up to eight storeys. Places Victoria this month sold the 0.9 hectare former Binks Ford site in Cowper Street for a reported $21 million. The state government has 14 other Footscray sites listed as ‘land being prepared for future sale’. A number of these are in the Joseph Road precinct and a handful around Middle Footscray Station. Maribyrnong council director of planning services Nigel Higgins said the council had regular discussions with the state government over sites for sale. A report to Tuesday’s city development special committee recommended the council lodge an expression of interest on two parcels of land in the Joseph Road precinct, valued about $900,000, to create new open space for up to 4000 new residents expected to move into the development. MY PLACE Laverton resident and Hobsons Bay SES unit controller Craig MacCallum says he finds peace sitting by the sea and watching the world go by. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I was born and bred in Williamstown. We first lived in Aitken Street. We moved to Altona at Christmas, 1962. I’ve been in Laverton about 15 years. I’m a foundation member of the Hobsons Bay SES unit, so I’ve been there 33 years – we started in 1983. What do you like about Laverton? It’s fairly quiet. The area certainly is upgrading. There’s a lot of old houses that were from the RAAF Base. I actually live in one of the former RAAF houses. Obviously, a lot of the older community has probably moved out and there’s a lot more younger families in the area. It’s very quiet and it’s progressing.

At the moment, nothing. The only issue probably I find on the street that I live in is the traffic. A lot of the people – I suppose you’d call it the hoon element – don’t obey the road laws and turn the street into a racetrack … a bit unfortunate when you’ve got quite a lot of children and adults, over at the secondary school on my street.

What would you change about it?

Why did you get involved in volunteering with the SES?

To be truthful I don’t really frequent many restaurants. I don’t actually have a favourite eatery – home is probably about the main.

Originally, I first joined the Altona Apex club. Then, after we had that big storm in Altona (in 1982) and they decided to form an SES unit, I thought it would be something interesting to

get involved in. I’ve become fairly involved, obviously, being a foundation member and now the actual controller of the unit. Over the years, the interest has kept me there. In the big storm in 1982, a lady was killed. It was down in Pier Street and one of the large trees fell over and crushed her car.

What’s your fondest memory growing up in Hobsons Bay? When I was younger, I always used to like going down to the piers and watching the boats. I always find it quite peaceful enjoyment, to just sit and watch the world go by.

A resort lifestyle at Truganina When Joe and Joy decided to accompany long-time friends Graham and Sue on a tour of Palm Lake Resort at Truganina, they didn’t think that on the car ride home they would be considering making the move themselves. FRUITY FRIDAYS Those who grow their own fruit and vegetables know there is nothing more satisfying than harvesting, cooking and eating your own home-grown produce. My mum has her own little orchard of orange, lemon, apple, plum, banana and grapefruit trees, and is also currently trying to coax a rather stubborn little fig tree into producing some fruit. She also picks bucketloads of apricots from the burgeoning tree in my brother’s backyard, cooking them up in a big pot on the stovetop, then freezing the stewed fruit for later use in pies, tarts, or just on its own with lashings of vanilla ice cream.

Cut four peaches or nectarines in half and remove the stones. Preheat a barbecue flat plate on high. Place 20 grams of butter and one third of a cup of brown sugar in a heatproof aluminium tray. Place on the barbecue flat plate and cook, stirring until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves.

For millennia the relationship between man and his best friend has been unchanged – a largely uncomplicated affair built on loyalty, trust and tickles behind the ears. But now, just as it has invaded practically every corner of our lives, there’s a growing category of pet-related technology aiming to drag Fido (and Felix) into the 21st century. Much of the booming market in pet-tech belongs in the field of so-called “wearables”, many of which are GPS-enabled trackers to help you find your furry pal when it decides to go walkabout. The Petrek GPS Pet Tracker is mounted on the collar of your dog (or cat). It comes pre-loaded with a SIM card and claims to be able to find an errant pooch or moggie via a dedicated iPet app on your smartphone. For it to work, you have to remember to charge the device every couple of days and trust that, if your pet does go AWOL, he or she will remain in a spot with GPS coverage. TrakaPet is another RSPCA-branded GPS monitor. According to the sales spiel, it is suitable for “dogs, some cats, cattle, horses, ferrets, pet pigs, even an ibis”. Presumably the demand for ibis-tracking is at the more specialised end of the market. Fitbark is the doggie equivalent of the fitness band craze among humans. Mounted on the collar, it monitors the dog’s play and rest and then allocates BarkPoints (I’m not making this up) based on how active it is. So if your mutt doesn’t reach his or her optimal BarkPoint total during the day, you’d better get out for a walk together when you get home from work (which won’t do you any harm either). For those owners desperate to know what their pets get up to during the day, there is the

PetCube camera (petcube.com), which allows you to watch your dog and cat at home while you’re away via a smartphone app. It comes with a remote-controlled laser pointer, so you can play with your pet from across town or across the planet – which is every bit as weird as it sounds. Alternatively, if you happen to be one of those old-fashioned owners who prefers actually hanging out in real time with your pet,

there’s some fun to be derived from the GoPro Fetch, a harness that allows you to mount a video camera on your dog to get a pooch’s eye view of the world. It can be chest-mounted or fitted just behind the head for those joyfully flapping ear shots, and has spawned a whole genre of dog cam videos on YouTube. And lest this all becomes a little too canine-centric, let me introduce you to the

SPORT Reds power through to surprise coach Laverton Park was not meant to be this good coming out of the blocks. The Reds beat Meadow Park 3-0 in their FFA Cup qualifier on Saturday to move into the main draw of the knockout competition. “It was a good surprise,” Reds’ coach Vince De La Plaza said of the win. “We’re still missing a few players. We had a couple of boys we pulled from the reserves team and they did their job. It was good to see what we’ve got.” Laverton Park is not used to being so competitive this early in the season. A byproduct of its tumble to the bottom tier of the state leagues is having to go through to

qualifying stage. De La Plaza was concerned before the game about the quality his side would be able to put on the park, having had a shorter than usual pre-season and without a handful of first teamers. “We haven’t had much training and the boys are lacking a bit of fitness, but we managed to score three goals and play well,” he told Star Weekly Weekly. “It was good to see a bit of character. They hung in there and managed to get the goals and keep a clean sheet. The other team didn’t have many chances.” Javier Sobarzo opened the scoring for the Reds after 20 minutes, a lead that would

be doubled just 10 minutes later through best-onfield Felipe Jara. Shady Dib put the game out of reach by adding a third Reds’ goal – the pick of the lot – as the teenager controlled a cross then swivelled and powered the ball to the far corner. The Reds will face Carey EFC in the first round at Laverton Park Reserve on Saturday. On Saturday, Altona North will face Epping City at Duffy Street Reserve, while Melbourne City plays away to Surf Coast at Banyule’s Warri Reserve. A’s find mojo just in time By Lance Jenkinson Altona’s odds of reaching the sub-district cricket finals improved significantly after its 105-run walloping of Williamstown at Frank Kirk Oval on Saturday. The up-and-down A’s found their mojo at the right time to shatter the Seagulls’ plans of a late finals swoop. The A’s were dominant in all facets, defending their 211 with a superb team bowling performance to skittle the Gulls for 106. “We had a bit of a patch where we had some disappointing losses, where it was probably un-Altona like cricket,” A’s captain Shane Jones told Star Weekly. “The win this week was brilliant. They all put their hands up, which was great.” If either of two scenarios happens in Saturday’s final round, the A’s head for the finals. They must first beat Moorabbin on the road, which is going to be no easy feat. Even if this

happens, their finals fate will be in the hands of old foes Werribee. Should Werribee beat sixth-placed Ormond, the A’s would leapfrog the Monders, landing in the finals. “Off the field, we all get along very well,” Jones said of the Altona-Werribee relationship. “Maybe they can look after another team in the western suburbs. “We’ve dropped a couple of games this year, which we shouldn’t have. So if we don’t make the finals, it’s our own fault,” Jones said. “We’ve just got to win this week and, if lady luck is on our side, she’s on our side.” Altona has been one of the hardest teams to gauge this season. One week, they can look like world-beaters, the next they can be made to look second-rate. Shock defeat puts Bulldogs on the finals outer A week ago, Yarraville-Footscray was considered the west’s best chance of featuring in the premier division bowls finals. But then neighbouring Altona gate-crashed that party at Francis Street on Saturday. In a remarkable turn of events, the A’s will enter the final round of the season in a stronger position than Yarraville-Footscray to swoop on a finals berth should fourth-placed Mentone slip up. For so long the A’s were considered little hope, but their stunning four-rinks-to-nil, 85-52 win over the Bulldogs yielded a maximum 18 points and dislodged the cross-town rival YarravilleFootscray from the top four.

Bulldogs skip Wayne Roberts was shell-shocked. “You can’t put your finger on it,” he said of the loss to the A’s. “We were all geed up and keen to do well.” He said Altona was a good side that had probably been below par this year. “They’ve got the people to turn it on when it has to be turned on,” he said. The outlook is grim for Yarraville-Footscray. The side must beat MCC Kew Sports on the road and needs Altona to lose to Mitcham and Mentone to lose to Bundoora RSL. The heavy loss was a bitter blow for the Bulldogs.

“The big picture – we’ve had a good season, we’re right in it ‘till a game to go,” Roberts said. “But it’s disappointing to think we were there in the four and we bombed out in a bad way.” All the Bulldogs can do is go out and take care of their own business. The penultimate round results have certainly boosted the spirits at Altona, which is six points outside the top four. Zoe Woods is the talk of Williamstown athletics after the under-14 middle distance rising star broke two club records at the Victorian Junior Championships at Lakeside Stadium in South Melbourne. Woods won the 1500 metres final in four minutes and 54.62 seconds on the first night of the three-day event. In the 800 metres the next day, she won the final in 2:19.98. Rhyan Thomas was a multiple medal winner. The under-18 claimed silver in the steeplechase with a time of 6:21.94 and backed-up on the final day with 8:55.87 in the 3000 metres to grab bronze. Cosimo Mucci was Williamstown’s other medal winner, reaching the finals of the under-20 100 metres and 200 metres, winning bronze in the 200 in 22.61.

Rams playing assistant coach Dean Malthouse said the win was a fitting finale for a player of Black’s stature. “He got a couple of clutch hits as well,” Malthouse said. “He’s been around since juniors and was in state teams growing up. I think he’s 36 now so it’s been good to have someone of his calibre helping us out this season.” The Rams’ 10-run rout came on the back of a complete game from import pitcher Gabe Sandersius. The American was in total command, just as he has been for most of the summer. “His second half of the year has been unbelievable,” Malthouse said.

“He’s barely given up an earned run each week.” A battle-hardened veteran, Sandersius has produced long stints on the mound for the Rams this season. This was a little shorter than his previous two games, in which he went the distance over nine innings, because the Rams’ offence got hot with Black and Zac Seipolt picking up clutch hits. “Gabe knows his body really well, so he tends to conserve his energy … then when he needs it, he jumps into his reserve and fires a few rockets,” Malthouse said. It was not only Sandersuis’ impact on the field that endeared him to the Rams’ faithful. The left-handed pitcher lived up to his promise of being “more than just a good player”. “We’re trying to build our culture back and he’s bought right into that,” Malthouse said. “He works with a lot of the younger guys …he’s not just an import that plays. He’s leaving his print on the club for the future, which is more than you can ask for, especially when the guy has arguably been your best player all year.”

The Rams had a totally new leadership group this summer, right from president Ben Portelli and up to head coach Matt Lawman and his assistants, Malthouse and Dean Anglin. While nothing is set in stone, the coaches expect to stay on with the Rams next season. “The place has a real buzz about it, even though we haven’t done that well [in the firsts] this year,” Malthouse said. “We’ve got several of our juniors in finals this year … it’s a good sign with all the young guys coming through. “The plan for us [coaches] is to stay on and the committee is behind us. “Our visions all align.” Meanwhile, Williamstown Wolves lost their final three games of the season to just miss out on the division 2 playoffs. The Wolves were beaten 8-3 by Bonbeach in their last game on Saturday to finish one place outside the top four. In women’s division 1, Footscray had a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Doncaster in the semi-final on Saturday, the defeat putting Footscray out of the finals.

The Western Bulldogs will begin their NAB Challenge campaign tomorrow night against GWS Giants at Startrack Oval in Canberra. It will be the first time the Bulldogs take to the field in a competitive match since their elimination final loss to the Adelaide Crows last September. The AFL’s women’s exhibition matches have been expanded to 10 games for the coming season, with the Bulldogs to feature in three, including two against Melbourne and one a WA state team.

The Western Region Football League’s young guns are set to take to the field for the first time since 2011. The top under-19 prospects from the WRFL will play against the Ballarat Football League in a curtain-raiser to a senior match at the AFL Victoria Community Championships at the Whitten Oval in May.
