Clear the air or we’re out By Ben Cameron and Goya Dmytryshchak A Brooklyn mother wants to leave the area because of ongoing health concerns linked to local pollution. Olexandra Vazhnenko, a biologist, fears for her family’s health, especially that of her three-year-old son, Robert. “At his age, we all believe that if the child grows up in an area with a high level of pollution it can cause a lot of problems in the future, like allergies and asthma,” she said. “We’re still considering this [moving]; it’s just our financial hardship doesn’t let us do this straight away. “I came from Ukraine, from an industrial area, but here I’ve been sick much more often than there, so there’s definitely some pollution. “It’s different kinds of respiratory or infection, or just I feel unwell.” Ms Vazhnenko spoke out following the second major industrial fire at Brooklyn in just over three months. Smoke drifted across Sunshine and surrounding areas in the wake of a large rubbish fire in Bunting Road last Tuesday night, when recycled rubber and plastics caught alight. That followed an October 18 blaze at scrap metal recycling plant Sims Metal, which took 10 hours and more than 100 firefighters to extinguish. Residents within a one-kilometre radius were told to stay inside, shut doors and windows and turn off their air-conditioners. However, the Environment Protection Authority said the twin blazes were no indication that major industrial fires were a “regular event” in the area. Facebook was ‘on fire’ last week with residents voicing their anger. John wrote: “I live in West Sunshine and some days you get these smells wafting across the suburb, and there is always smoke coming from the industrial area in Brooklyn”. Another, Anthea, said she knew of at least four fires in the Sunshine, Sunshine West and Brooklyn areas last Tuesday. Calling for better air quality monitoring, Greens MP Colleen Hartland said she would raise the issue in State Parliament. “The government must resource the EPA far better to monitor industry and undertake preventive activities,” she said. “When something goes wrong, they should be onsite immediately, monitoring the air and directing remediation activity.” An EPA spokeswoman said the agency had reduced pollution and environmental impacts at industry sites in
Brooklyn through “significant regulatory efforts”. It has recently issued 28 pollution abatement notices to businesses in the Brooklyn industrial precincts, demanding they clean up their acts. Brimbank council’s city development director, Stuart Menzies, said the site of last week’s fire at Brooklyn operated under an EPA licence, and the council had no authority to inspect landfills. “Council has been undertaking an active enforcement program in Brooklyn to improve issues of dust and odour,” he said. Council on case of bayside pong By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council says it doesn’t believe seaweed from beaches it manages caused a ‘sewage-like’ odour that was reported across Melbourne’s west last month. The EPA’s pollution hotline received about 400 calls between January 10 and 15 from people reporting a smell described as sewage, or seaweed. Complaints came from suburbs including Altona, Newport, Seddon, Yarraville and West Footscray. The EPA last week said one of its experts had found a large amount of seaweed near Altona
Meadows. The coastline near the 100 Steps of Federation – Cheetham Wetlands – is managed by the state government, not the council. EPA executive director Damian Wells said the odour’s most likely source was seaweed and mudflats exposed by an extreme low tide between Altona Meadows and Werribee South. “An inspection by EPA’s associate principal odour expert found a large amount of seaweed had washed up on the coastline near Altona Meadows,” Mr Wells said. “Low tides had also exposed mudflats, containing anoxic sediments caused by years of seagrass build-up and decomposition.
“With the prevailing wind conditions, this part of Port Phillip Bay can often see a large build-up of dislodged seagrass and seaweed, called wrack, along beaches. “Southerly winds may have pushed the odour further inland, which could explain why EPA also received calls from other areas.” Hobsons Bay deputy mayor Sandra Wilson said the council was checking the foreshore seven days a week for seaweed deposits. She said that so far, over summer, council workers had removed 1000 tonnes of seaweed. “We don’t believe the odour is from uncollected seaweed from our shoreline,” she
said. “We dedicate significant resources to seaweed removal as this is a non-negotiable aspect of living near a coastal foreshore. “Tides obviously dictate when it can be removed, but so far over this summer period alone, we have removed well over 1000 tonnes of seaweed. “We provided all our data to the EPA including our foreshore log books which includes all our daily foreshore observations.” Environment, Land, Water and Planning Department regional manager Chris Padovani said seaweed build-up was a regular occurrence. Protester loses claim on police A protester injured in a clash with a police horse at Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre has failed in his bid to force police to reveal their tactics. The Supreme Court of Victoria’s Court of Appeal upheld a County Court ruling that had earlier excluded evidence of police strategies on the grounds they attracted public interest immunity and were not relevant. Mark Ryan had sought damages for injuries he alleges he sustained while taking part in a demonstration outside the detention centre in May 2011. When protesters, including Ryan, formed a chain by linking arms, police forced them back and Ryan fell over. Ryan alleged a police officer caused her horse, Troophorse Upwey, to advance on protesters and roll on Ryan “using a rehearsed, controlled manoeuvre”. He claims he fractured a clavicle while his chest and shoulder were bruised. Truck bans increase ‘rat running’ By Benjamin Millar Footscray residents say truck bans introduced “in someone else’s neighbourhood” are sending hundreds more trucks past their homes day and night. Buckley Street resident Craig Williams said curfews introduced last year during school crossing times on Somerville Road, Yarraville, combined with night-time bans on Moore Street in Footscray, were sending vastly more trucks down Buckley Street. “In the past five years the volume has increased by so much,” he said. “When will someone say enough is enough?”
Mr Williams said diesel emissions were one of his main concerns, along with the inability of residents to sleep, as hundreds of trucks drive past their bedrooms every night. He is calling on the state government to ensure that any further bans of trucks on local streets that are introduced as part of the Western Distributor freeway project include Buckley Street. “The port is going to triple in size, and there are going to be about 800 new residents in place with new apartments being built on Buckley Street,” Mr Williams said. “There doesn’t seem to be any planning around this.” Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen

Hartland said a proposed daily cap on truck tolls of $80 showed the state government was massively underestimating the number of trucks that would “rat run” through residential streets to avoid taking the new freeway. “All trucks taking the rat run would be funnelled on to Buckley Street, Moore Street and Geelong Road,” she said. “These are residential streets and home to Footscray
Primary School.” Ms Hartland said only 24-hour curfews on all local streets would solve the problem and tackle the high child asthma rates across the Maribyrnong council area. A spokesman for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the truck curfews aimed to strike a balance for the local community and local truck operators. “The Andrews government has already taken action to remove trucks from inner-west streets and the Western Distributor will take 6000 trucks off local roads,” he said. “There’s a lot of work to be done and that’s why we’ll be going through an in-depth planning and consultation process.”
Djokovic an ace with kids Braybrook had a brush with tennis royalty this week when Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic found time to support some of the west’s most disadvantaged children. Less than 24 hours after winning his sixth Australian Open title, Djokovic dropped into Melbourne City Mission’s Braybrook Early Learning Centre. The world number one’s charitable foundation, the Novak Djokovic Foundation, pledged $20,000 to the Mission’s Early Years Supported Playgroup program, directly helping disadvantaged young children in Braybrook and Doreen. It’s the first time the foundation has donated to an Australian charity. Djokovic said he was passionate about helping kids in need. “Early childhood education gives children
a chance to respond strongly to any challenge and become winners in any field,” he said. “Melbourne City Mission is a leader in providing innovative and effective early childhood programs, and we’re very happy to contribute towards their work in this area.” Melbourne City Mission Interim chief executive Liz Bishop said the funding would directly help disadvantaged preschool children and their families in Braybrook by providing “a safe, stable and enjoyable early learning environment”. Trugo may come again

An ambitious plan is under way to revive the distinctly inner-west sport of trugo. The Footscray Trugo club, in Buckley Street, Seddon, lies in a derelict state after hosting its last match in 2009. But the game, invented by Newport railyard workers in the 1920s, could return if a move spearheaded by Footscray bar owners Stuart and Liana Lucca-Pope proves a success. Mr Lucca-Pope said his idea was born after the pair took their Littlefoot Bar staff to Yarraville Trugo Club for their Christmas party. Trugo’s objective is to score points by striking a rubber ring with a mallet backwards from between the player’s legs into a pair of goal posts. “They had a ball, particularly the girls,” Mr Lucca-Pope said. “We thought it would be a great community thing to get going again. It’s a unique local sport and it would be a shame for it to disappear.” The community appears to have quickly embraced the plan. The Footscray Trugo Club Revival page on Facebook attracted more than 350 likes within days of being created. A 2006 conservation analysis of the Footscray Trugo Club pavilion and grounds recommended the council-owned site receive heritage protection on the grounds of its historical significance. The report noted that the club is one of the oldest Trugo clubs still in existence, founded only a few weeks after the original club at Yarraville in 1937 and is the only surviving example of a purpose-built Trugo clubhouse. Maribyrnong council’s sustainable development manager, Nigel Higgins, said the council would get behind forming a

club if the local community supported it. “There’s no master plan for the Trugo club, but council’s open space strategy includes the recommendation to investigate options to redesign the site as open space,” he said. The council plans community consultation in the middle of the year as part of its 2016-17 capital works program.

The construction union’s Victorian branch and its former president have been fined $245,000 for attempting to coerce a scaffolding company operating on a Maribyrnong building site. The Federal Court ordered the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union to pay $210,000 in penalties for threatening to put Red & Blue Scaffolding out of business because it refused to hire a shop steward in 2013. Former branch president Ralph Edwards was fined $35,000 over his role in attempts to block Red & Blue Scaffolding from entering the La Scala construction site in Maribyrnong and another site in South Yarra unless it employed a nominated CFMEU member. The legal action was brought by Fair Work Building and Construction, the building industry watchdog. The court heard the CFMEU had broken industrial laws more than 100 times since 2003. Justice Christopher Jessup said the union’s “repeated contravening conduct” had been the subject of sustained judicial criticism for a long period of time. He permanently stayed a number of the penalties, reducing the CFMEU fine to $126,000 and Mr Edwards’ fine to $21,000. He said the case was devoid of any mitigating circumstances. “The union has shown no contrition and has not co-operated with the regulator.” Benjamin Millar

Man on ‘kneecap’ charge

A 26-year-old Braybrook man has been charged with shooting a man in the kneecap. Police allege he fired a shotgun at the 30-year-old victim inside a unit on McLennan Street, Braybrook at 7.25am last Tuesday. He was charged with causing serious injury, possessing a firearm, using a firearm, and committing an offence while on bail. He was remanded in custody.

Two of Victoria University’s leading lights have been recognised for their philanthropic work in this year’s Australia Day awards. Victoria University chancellor George Pappas has been appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for service to the community through his roles with tertiary education, medical research and defence organisations. Mr Pappas and his wife, Jill, recently pledged $1 million to the Kirner-Kosky scholarship fund, which will support the education of two young women from Melbourne’s west studying at VU each year. Victoria University Foundation and Centenary Campaign chairwoman Susan Alberti was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for philanthropic and fundraising support for a range of medical research, education and sports organisations. Her efforts include advocating for improved health care services for the disadvantaged, and supporting young women as a role model and mentor. Dr Alberti has served as a director of the Victoria University Foundation since 2008, and was elected to the chair in 2014. Victoria University vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins said Mr Pappas’s genuine passion and enthusiasm for the university were inspirational. “And in Dr Alberti, we have an extremely generous philanthropist whose energy and enthusiasm are infectious,” he said. “When she commits to a cause or project, she becomes an active ambassador for that cause.”
Yarraville will be going to the dogs this Sunday when the village hosts the alwayspopular Yarraville Festival. A doggie fashion show will be just a part of a day of fun that awaits all ages as scores of stalls and half a dozen stages of entertainment are scattered through the village. The festival will kick off at 9am, with treasures and novelties of all descriptions lining the streets. Musical acts will perform throughout the day. They’ll include Paisley & Plaid, Unsealed Road, The Mercurials and The Stu Thomas Paradox. The Royal District Nursing Service will

Drivers flout drink, drug laws By Goya Dmytryshchak Police are dismayed that motorists are still driving after drinking or taking drugs despite numerous warnings and blitzes. More than 83 offences, including seven involving drink or drugs, were detected across Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong during the Australia Day long weekend blitz dubbed Operation Amity. In Maribyrnong, police caught three drinkdrivers, four disqualified drivers and five unlicensed drivers. Eight unregistered vehicles were detected,
along with four speeding offences, four drivers disobeying traffic signals, one seat belt offence and one mobile phone offence. One car was impounded and one cyclist was fined. In Hobsons Bay, two drink-drivers and two drug-drivers on speed or ecstasy were caught. Police detected 11 unregistered vehicles, three disqualified drivers, four unlicensed drivers, five speeding offences, two mobile phone offences and two people without seatbelts. River rivals go batty Cross-river rivalries could reach fever pitch this month as Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley councils join forces to host a Community Cricket World Cup. The February 21 event at McIvor Reserve in Yarraville and Fairbairn Park in Ascot Vale will have councillors from each side of the Maribyrnong River going head-to-head in a friendly match between the municipalities as part of the community event. Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said the seven-a-side tournament was about playing social cricket with friends. “It doesn’t matter if you are a cricketer or not – the day promises to be a fun day out for the family,” he said. “Last year’s event was a great success … it was so much fun to have a friendly competition against our neighbours over in Moonee Valley, which we are excited about doing again.”
Moonee Valley mayor Andrea Surace says the free event will include games for juniors, males and females, as well as the match between councillors. “Last year was declared a draw so I’m keen to see Moonee Valley come out on top this time,” she said. All teams will play a minimum of three one-hour matches, competing to be crowned winner of either the Maribyrnong or Moonee Valley Community Cricket World Cup for 2016. many of the unregistered vehicles detected were motorbikes. “It may be the weather,” he said. “People don’t ride their motorcycles for a long time, forget about them and when the warm weather comes they go for a ride and forget to pay for the registration and the other things that go with motorcycle ownership.”
A current police operation, Operation Montecristo, is targeting drug and alcoholimpaired drivers. “It’s a TAC-supported operation,” Acting Senior Sergeant Prentice-Evans said. “It’s focused on Friday and Saturday nights, which are high road trauma times. “The biggest disappointment for us, particularly at this time of year, is that people are still drink-driving. “But because we’re doing more roadside drug-testing, it’s indicating there is a significant problem with drug-driving, which is disappointing.”

SES flat out as storms strike By Goya Dmytryshchak Flash flooding took Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong residents by surprise late Saturday night, leaving some with leaking roofs caused by storm damage. Weather Bureau duty forecaster Richard Russell said most of the rain – with frequent lightning – fell during the last hour of Saturday. Hobsons Bay recorded about 30 millimetres of rain and Maribrynong slightly less. Footscray SES responded to 15 calls for building damage and flooding. And Footscray police were left searching for the owner of a puppy who walked up to officers in the wake of the storms. After a call-out via Facebook failed to identify the owner, there were “a few broken hearts at Footscray police station” when the Lost Dogs’ Home collected him on Sunday. Hobsons Bay SES deputy controller Peter Tester urged people to ensure their roofs were in good condition. “All requests for assistance have been related to the storms, with water leaking through roof tiles and tin sheets,” he said. A number of these homes had water running through light fittings. “When water has run through light fittings or other electrical points, our advice is not to use those lights until they have been checked by a qualified electrician,” Mr Tester said. “We also recommend that residents check gutters and clear any debris that may stop water draining away.” Mr Tester said recent rain had also caused lots of flash flooding across roads. “People are reminded not to walk or drive through flooded roads,” he said. - with Benjamin Millar

Sex myths adding to STI stats ‘ A western suburbs nurse wants young people to have better access to health services to help stem rising rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) across Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. HealthWest figures show STIs are on the rise in Hobsons Bay (392 cases per 100,000 people), while Maribyrnong recorded the highest rate in the western region, (551 per 100,000 people). The Victorian average was 438 per 100,000. Melton had the highest rate of teenage
pregnancy, followed by Maribyrnong, Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Brimbank. Research by Women’s Health West found sexually active young people in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong were the least likely to use condoms, compared to counterparts across Melbourne’s west. Sam Read, a nurse specialising in sexual health in young people, said rates of STIs and blood-borne viruses were higher in the west than the Victorian average. “The same applies for teenage pregnancy,” she said.
“And [figures do] not include pregnancies that ended in a termination.” Ms Read said some of the people seeking treatment were in care. “We’ve seen people, for instance, in relation to sexual assault, very, very young teenagers pregnant; they’re really not sure what to do and don’t have the support of a parent or a guardian. “A lot of young people are very uninformed about methods of contraception. I’ve found that, in this area more than anywhere I’ve worked, there are a lot of myths about things, like the [contraceptive] implant.
“I think the figures show only 50 per cent of young people would think about condoms.” Ms Read said if a young person had a negative experience with a general practitioner who wasn’t “youth friendly”, they may never return. Ms Read has worked with adolescents at Laverton’s Link Centre and currently practices at Hampstead Drive Medical Centre at Hoppers Crossing, which has a dedicated youth clinic. “The work we’ve been doing outside of clinic hours is primarily to empower young people to gain access to this health care,” she said.

MY PLACE From Sir William Angliss dropping by to collect the rent, to rugby-tackling thieves as they raced down the street, nonagenarian Max Cooper of M & N Cooper Jewellers tells Benjamin Millar he has enjoyed a colourful life at Footscray.
How accepting was the community then? Straightaway in 1939 I started to go to Footscray Tech. I could hardly speak a word of English and the boys were all very friendly. I, myself, in Footscray have never felt anti-Semitism. It was full credit to the general citizenship of Footscray that anti-Semitism never existed. How did you come to be a jeweller? Unfortunately, my father passed away in 1947. This [shop] was a tobacconist. When he died, my mother continued with a helper. At that time I was already working as a lecturer in RMIT in engineering. A watchmaker came in off the street and said ‘put up a sign that you are taking watch repairs’, which we did, and we started to get quite busy with watch repairs. I took an interest in watches and associated things, like rings … so that’s how it became a jewellery shop and I became a jeweller.
How has Footscray changed in that time? I do remember this street here being a very busy shopping centre on Friday nights, and that was pleasant. You don’t get that good feeling you did in those days, where you knew everyone around – they were good times. Footscray was a very friendly suburb; they were all hard workers in all the industrial areas around. This property here was [built by] Sir William Angliss … to populate the area more. My barber tells me he still remembers Sir William Angliss coming around to collect the rent himself. Have you had any unusual things happen? A fella broke the window and grabbed a bunch of rings. I chased and managed to rugby tackle him. People from the Footscray Mail came across and said ‘Mr Cooper, you tackled him, how did you manage to do that?’ I said I played rugby for Footscray Tech. They said when was that, and I said around 1935 to 1940. They said Mr Cooper that was 40 years ago. Needless to say I was black and blue for the rest of the month, but it didn’t matter. What is the secret of your long life and career? I haven’t been working at it, I assure you. When I go home I’m never grumpy, I never carry any bad feelings into the house. One of my favourite sayings is that by coming to work I kiss my wife twice a day, in the morning when I leave and at night when I come home. If I stayed at home, I probably wouldn’t kiss her at all.

How did your family come to be in Footscray? I’m Jewish. I was born in Germany in 1925. My parents were born in Poland and went to Germany in 1918, more or less on foot. My father was very happy … until one day, about 1930, some of his so-called mates said to him if we don’t greet you in the streets, don’t be offended, we’ve got to be careful of who we are fraternising with. My father … suddenly got a chill, and said to my mother we are leaving. My father had a sister, who had come to Australia in 1928, and she said come to Australia, so my father came over the year before us to see what it was like, and we came to this place in 1938. We have been here ever since, and I now have 47 great grandchildren.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a namesake to confirm his love of yum cha. The premises recently occupied by Kenny’s Yum Cha House was previously, and for many years, a rather nondescript noodle shop we never tried. A new family has taken over, headed by dumpling-making dad Kenny, and they’re doing very nice things. I confess to having tried “hokkien noodles” a few weeks before Christmas and being unimpressed. But then a home delivery of some yum cha items – and very good they were – re-sparked my interest. So heading to Ferguson Street with two regular CTS companions, I am filled with hope. But there is cause to be cautious, in terms of optimism. After all, normal expectations for yum cha goodies served in such a humble, corner store setting would normally fall into the realms of cheap, enjoyable, but surely frozen and mass-produced dumplings, and the like. What we enjoy at Kenny’s Yum Cha House is way, way better than that – top-notch yum cha that pretty much matches what you’ll find at any of the storied yum cha places around town. In fact, this place sort of redefines yum cha and how it can work. Yum cha doesn’t have to be Sunday brunch – it can also easily be dinner. Great yum cha doesn’t have to involve trollies – it can just as easily be a la carte. In truth, it can even be argued that ordering as you go is preferable.

Everything we have is good or better: Pan-fried dumplings ($8 for five). Pork dumplings ($5.50 for three). Chive prawn dumplings ($6 for three). Pork ribs in black bean sauce ($5.50). Chicken feet in black bean sauce ($5). Only the last mentioned are in any way less than excellent – they lack a certain spicy zing. As well, as we find that assessing a yum cha joint can, at least partially, be done on the basis of greenery, we order Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce ($12) – and that, too, is lovely. It’s been a rather smashing meal – easy, impromptu and cheap (we pay $16 per person). And on a Monday night in Williamstown!

Diversity rules the catwalk Honey Montana has taken out the title of Miss Gay Australia 2016 in a glittering pageant held at The Substation on Saturday night. The 32-year-old drag queen performer from St Kilda sashayed away with the prestigious crown after impressing judges at the Midsumma Festival beauty pageant at Newport. The pageant is Australia’s largest for female impersonators and transgender women. Ms Montana, a former professional ballerina and singer, also won best in talent for her impersonation of pop diva Madonna. She said she was excited to be able to show drag as “an acceptable, normal expression of one’s identity”. “When I was a child, I used to sneak into my mother’s bedroom to raid her make-up case, wrap a tea towel around my head and bop to British pop group Mel and Kim,” she said. “I never expected to win Miss Gay Australia 2016. I’ve come so far, and want to encourage other young people to express who they are.” Ms Montana said anyone who encounters obstacles can approach organisations, such as Diverse Voices, her chosen charity. Andrea Jaca Smith, a 35-year-old Philippine-born transgender make-up artist, choreographer and cabaret showgirl from Springvale, was crowned Miss Transsexual Australia 2016. Ms Smith said the $15,000 prizemoney will enable her complete transition to “a real woman” through gender reassignment surgery in Thailand. Ms Smith also outshone seven other contestants to pick up the titles of best in Victorian secrets wear (swimwear) and best in evening gown.

n observatory of the world’s best practice in teaching and learning … A laboratory of innovation … A conservatory of what is tried, tested and true … This was Dr Helen Drennen’s vision for the Wesley College Institute for Innovation in Education when she returned to Wesley College as principal in 2003. “The institute was established to find a new way to enable teachers to shape learning and teaching for the world we are preparing students for,” says Helen who was awarded an AM for services to education in the Australian Day honours. A recent tangible benefit of the research arm of the institute has been the significant emphasis on using data to inform practice in the classroom. Teachers have many more tools to guide them in enhancing student performance and growth. “Similarly, when we want to start a new program or to explore new areas in digital learning, the institute shapes proposals and begins the planning,” says Helen.

Helen spent some years at Wesley before moving to the UK as academic director for the International Baccalaureate and then director of the Asia Pacific Region. She is the first female principal at Wesley in its 150 years. “The strong focus on serving its community attracted me back to Wesley,” she explains. “I also recognised the college’s potential not only to do wonderful things in its own community, but to leverage change for education in Australia and internationally.” An example of Helen’s commitment to learning and community is the success of the Yiramalay/Wesley Studio School in the Kimberley in north Western Australia. Today the school at Leopold Downs Station near Fitzroy Crossing has 60 Aboriginal students from the top end of Australia across years 10, 11 and 12. The unique partnership began in 2004, when the college teamed with the Aboriginal people of the Fitzroy Valley Community in the Kimberley. The focus was for the two communities to learn together, to develop greater cultural understanding, and to expand horizons and opportunities for children at Wesley and in the Kimberley. “When I returned to Australia from overseas in 2003, I was surprised how little attention schools gave to developing an understanding of Aboriginal culture and language,” says Helen. “So one of the first things I did was to explore opportunities to see how we could help in the preservation of Aboriginal language and have real opportunities for learning about culture on a reciprocal basis.” Students at Wesley learn Bunuba and Walmajarri, elders visit the college and year 10 students travel to the Kimberley to learn on country. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Wesley and there are further initiatives. These include the re-introduction of boarding in a new contemporary model called “learning in residence” for national and international students at a 136-bed facility at the Glen Waverley campus. Wesley’s focus on innovation and best practice is complemented by its history and tradition, the cornerstones of the college. “This school has great pride in its traditions, but it is always ready to respond to change.”

Surface Book turns laptop to tablet Surface Book review: Microsoft’s hybrid reversal pays off By Peter Wells With the Surface, Microsoft designed a tablet that could moonlight as a fully fledged desktop machine. The Surface Book flips that emphasis – this is a laptop that can convert to a tablet, but that small change gives a completely new experience. The size of the Surface Book is a little daunting. After watching slick Microsoft promotional videos, I was expecting a product as thin and light as my Macbook Air. But there is far more power in the Surface Book, and that means a bigger, heavier laptop – the Surface Book is identical in weight to the 13-inch Macbook Pro, though it’s a little thicker over all. That’s not to say the Surface Book feels bulky. The design of the machine is absolutely gorgeous. The keyboard is a pleasure to use, and the sleek magnesium casing is stunning. The display is sharper than the Retina Macbook Pro, sporting two million more pixels and a wider colour gamut than Apple’s laptop. Though not as thin as some laptops, the Surface Book is light enough. And, thanks to the dynamic fulcrum hinge, the machine feels perfectly balanced at any angle – be it on a desk or lap – try doing that with a Surface Pro. Like the Surface Pro 4, the Surface Book ships with a pen for quick scribbles or serious Photoshop work, whatever takes your fancy. I continue to be impressed with Windows Hello, the built-in infrared camera that lets you unlock the Surface Book just by looking at it. On the software side, Windows 10 a well-designed, mature and reliable OS in the traditional desktop setting. I ran into a few

SPORT Rosen gets it right when it matters Tim Rosen peaked just at the right time to take out the Maribyrnong Gift on Australia Day. Rosen ran second in his heat and third in the semi-final but hit the line first when it mattered in the open 120m race final at Pennell Reserve. Rosen, who competes for Glenhuntly Athletics Club, had a limited preparation because of a hamstring injury. He crossed the line just ahead of tough competition from Edward Ware and Nicholas Repalust. The six-runner field in the final was rounded out by James Vine, Stephanie Richards and Daniel Steinhauser. Local star Megan McMahon took out the 120m women’s gift.
She pipped Jacqui McCann and Loryn Savoia in a tight finish. Repalust just missed out on first place in the open 120m event but made up for it by winning the 70m open race. Lachlan Taylor triumphed in the 300m open race, while the 300m women’s/ masters went to Laura Nicholson. Stefan Catalano comfortably took out the 1600m open, while Colm Rothery picked up a win in the 1600m restricted. to see Williamstown’s Greg Miles acknowledged in the Australia Day honours with the Order of Australia medal (OAM) for his services to horse racing and broadcasting. Greg is the consummate professional and has been at the top of his game for decades. I work on SEN with one of the best, Bryan Martin, and I have to say I’m always amazed how callers like Bryan (also an AOM recipient) and Greg get it right in the heat of a frantic race call. I also marvel at their ability to remember colours and horse names race after race. When they do get it wrong – as Greg did in last year’s Caulfield Cup – the critics are savage and, for me, way off the mark. If every mistake I made on radio was highlighted in the same way there would be volumes, not just a page or two. Good on you, Greg.

Rookie shows his class By Lance Jenkinson Footscray Edgewater rookie Jonah Koch produced “something special” in his second game at Premier Cricket First XI level. Koch put the Bulldogs in a strong position after day one against St Kilda at the Merv Hughes Oval with a remarkable 5-21 off 16 overs. It was not the volume of the wickets or the economical way the teenager bowled that impressed Bulldogs captain Dean Russ, but the quality of batsmen he dismissed and the way he picked apart the Saints top order. “We saw something special,” Russ told Star Weekly. “To get the scalps he did in his second game was just exceptional and very exciting from the club’s point of view. “It definitely puts his name up in lights.” Koch’s victims included Rob Quiney, a long-time Victorian representative who
has played for Australia at Test level and Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League; Peter Handscomb, who played for Victoria and the Stars in the BBL; and Graeme Rummans, a former first-class player with Victoria and New South Wales. Koch had already been earmarked a star of the future even before his five-wicket haul. “We always knew he was a very good bowler,” Russ said. “He’s in the Victorian academy but, hopefully, this will fast track him. “Now his name is out there, the next challenge is the opposition taking more notice of him and putting a bit more work into him.” St Kilda was restricted to 205 off 92.4 overs, reward for Russ’s gamble to bowl knowing the quality of batsmen in the Saints’ line-up. “With the conditions and the outfield as it was, it gave us every opportunity to keep them to a manageable total and we were lucky enough to execute that,” Russ said.
“The outfield was seriously slow, a few bad balls didn’t quite get what they deserved, so it will make everyone’s bowling figures look a bit better. “That was the conditions and that was a big part of the reason we chose to bowl first.” After Koch removed the top five batsmen in St Kilda’s order, the rest of the bowlers feasted on the leftovers. Pacemen Guy Walker, Hamish Winter-Irving and Lucas Dredge and slow bowlers Russ and Jeremy Hart all claimed a wicket apiece while keeping the scoring to a minimum. The Bulldogs, eighth on the ladder, must win to preserve their place in the top eight. “It’s cutthroat now – there are no other options for us,” Russ said. “We’re not even contemplating not chasing those runs down. “That’s what we’ll be focusing on . . . getting 206 runs, singing the song and getting the six points to keep us in the top eight.”

this time of year all sporting clubs are looking for people to fill coaching positions, trainers, water persons and various other roles. If you can help, it’s definitely a very satisfying experience. People usually become involved when their kids start at a club and finish when they do but I urge those who are past that stage to get involved again because it’s good for your health and a wonderful thing to do for the community. Many football clubs have contacted me to publicise available positions. I don’t have the space to mention them all so find your nearest club and put up your hand.

Star runner in gold rush By Liam Twomey It’s been an amazing 12 months for superstar runner Amelia Mazza-Downie. Having dominated the 1500 metres at both state and national level in recent years, the Seaholme resident switched her focus to the 3000 metres and quickly showcased her talents. The Maribyrnong College student, 16, won a gold medal in the under-16 3000 metres at the national titles in Sydney last year and backed that performance up with a gold medal at the world-class Simplot Games. The Simplot Games is the biggest high school indoor track and field event in the US, with 2000 athletes competing over three days each year in Pocatello, Idaho. “It was great competing against really experienced athletes and just seeing the way they race,” Mazza-Downie said of her overseas experience. Following her success overseas, MazzaDownie went on to represent Australia at the world youth championships in Colombia. For her achievements, she has been selected as the winner of the 2016 Don Deeble Rising Star Award. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with Star Weekly. Each month, a nominee receives $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in reaching their sporting goals. As the overall winner, Mazza-Downie last week received a cheque for $5000. “I’m really thankful for everything the Yarraville Club and the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club do in putting this award on,” she said.

Joining him in third spot was soccer and cricket player Annabel Martin, who plays for the Melbourne Victory women’s team and competed for Victoria at the national cricket championships.
