Masters jobs pain By Benjamin Millar More than 100 jobs at Braybrook and Footscray are in jeopardy in the wake of Woolworths’ decision to pull the plug on its troubled Masters stores. Losses topping $600 million over the past four years, with no sign of a profit on the horizon, has spurred the company to a decision to either sell or close its home improvement chain. The decision will impact Masters stores at Braybrook, Caroline Springs and Williams Landing, and a further 60 locations across Australia, as well as Home Timber and Hardware in Footscray.

Jump in, boots and all After shedding 51.6 kilograms to win TV’s The Biggest Loser Loser, Hoppers Crossing’s Daniel Jofre says he and his family want to give back to the community by running free boot camps at Altona. Daniel weighed 132 kilograms when he entered the Channel 10 series with his uncle Rob, of Altona, and brothers Pablo and Tony, also of Hoppers Crossing. The Jofre family was also the biggest ‘losing’ family, dropping 208.6 kilograms among the four of them. Rob Jofre was named the biggest losing contestant, shedding 59.3 kilograms. Since the show ended more than six months ago, all four have kept the weight off and gained muscle tone. Rob says the boot camp idea eventuated because the family wanted to give something back. “One thing we learnt through our journey was that when we’re inspired, we inspire others, and we inspired each other in the competition,” he said. “The four of us kept each other on track, and we said we wanted to do the same thing for our family and our friends, so we decided to do something for the community free of charge.” Daniel said the boot camps would be suitable for all ages and fitness levels. “If there’s someone limited with injuries or fitness-wise, we change it for them,” he said. “If there’s kids, we do little games for them.” Pablo said their dramatic weight loss had changed their lives. “You feel great. It’s a new lease on life, and it’s fantastic.” Tony said the family wanted to align itself with a charity to reach out Australia-wide. “Hopefully, in future we can reach out to other towns as well.” The boot camps will run on the next two Sundays from 10am at Apex Reserve.

Woolworths announced on Monday it would either sell or wind up the stores after sustaining heavy losses. Woolworths chairman Gordon Cairns said it was forced to make the decision as it would take “many years” for Masters to become profitable. “We have determined we cannot continue to sustain ongoing losses from this business,” he said. “We intend to pursue an orderly prospective sale or wind-up of the business.” Mr Cairns said the process of winding up its failed business venture would take at least two months to complete, while a “potential sale process or other exit process will take additional time”. Losses at Masters were $245 million in 2015. The Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association told Fairfax Media the looming sale or closure left 10,000 workers and their families facing an “uncertain future”. “This is obviously a devastating time for workers and their families,” union national secretary Gerard Dwyer said. “If a sale can’t be secured, we’ll be ensuring that every possible avenue for redeployment of Masters’ dedicated, hard-working employees is explored. “The union has already sought and been given assurances that Woolworths will be working closely with staff and the SDA to maximise redeployments, should the business have to close.” The National Union of Workers, which represents Masters warehouse staff, said the decision would impact hard on employees.

As part of this process, there will be a public information session at the Civic Parade Council office on 6 February at 10am. The fountain dates back to 1876 and, as Melbourne’s earliest memorial fountain, it is a striking example of ornate Victorian architecture. Starting in mid-February, the fountain will undergo restoration works. The surface will be cleaned, and elements removed during the 1930s – including the heron, central pedestal and drinking cup arms – will be restored. The works are expected to last between four to six weeks and all works will be carried out in consultation with Heritage Victoria.

Level crossing removals In 2015 the Victorian Government allocated $2.4 billion in its 2015-16 Budget to remove 50 crossings in

Victoria by 2022. Out of Hobsons Bay’s 15 level crossings, three have been scheduled for removal: Aviation Road (Laverton), Ferguson Street (Williamstown North), and Kororoit Creek Road (Altona), with Kororoit Creek Road being marked as the first local level crossing for removal. As yet, the dates for removal have not been confirmed. The Victorian Government is faced with a number of different design options for each removal and we will be advocating on our community’s behalf for the best possible outcomes for each location. We want to hear your thoughts on the best ways to tackle these grade separations so we have put out a Draft Grade Separation Principles paper for consultation. The feedback we have received for the A B Shaw upgrade has been excellent. The flying fox has got off to a flying start and the space has been busy every weekend. But there was just one thing that we were told was missing. So we have taken that on board and we are pleased to announce toilets will soon be installed adjacent to the play space. Everything going to plan, the works should begin in the next few months. On a sadder note, the play space will be missing a frog. There was an incident of vandalism in January that has left our amphibian friend vandalised beyond repair. If you have any information about the incident please call 9932 1000.

On the nose ... EPA’s on the case By Goya Dmytryshchak Western suburbs residents who have been dealing with a mysterious stench have been told to expect more air-quality problems. The Environment Protection Authority this week issued a poor air quality warning for Brooklyn in coming days while announcing that its air-monitoring stations were offline due to technical difficulties. The EPA says it is closing in on the source of sewage-type odour reportedly stretching

from Geelong to Williamstown that resulted in about 330 complaints from suburbs including Altona, Kingsville, Newport, Maidstone and West Footscray. EPA director Damian Wells said officers had inspected Werribee and Ravenhall landfills, and the Western Treatment Plant, but did not believe these sites were the source. “EPA’s investigation has so far found that the odour is coming from the Werribee and Point Cook areas, but we’re yet to pinpoint the exact source,” he said.

He said identifying the source could be difficult as odour plumes moved with weather changes. The EPA is comparing pollution reports with weather conditions to try to identify the source. On Monday, the authority issued a public warning that there would be periods of poor air quality in Brooklyn in coming days due to hot, dry and windy weather. It has contacted businesses in the area, urging them to implement dust-management plans.

Brooklyn Residents Action Group chairman Bert Boere said the EPA should use its mobile monitoring station while its permanent ones were offline. “They should run that around every now and again over these days and have a bit of a track of what’s happening with the levels because it is really a time when they need to get some readings,” he said. The EPA said mobile monitoring stations were deployed only for emergency management protocols.

Cameras end 30-year fight Residents have won a decades-long fight for red light and speed cameras on a busy road near a Yarraville school. Two cameras will be switched on by mid-year at the intersection of Francis Street and Wembley Avenue to help improve safety for nearby Wembley Primary School pupils, who cross a road used by about 4600 trucks a day. A 13-day study by VicRoads in 2014 recorded 219 drivers running red lights and 16 speeding at the intersection. Resident Lola Anderson said she had campaigned for the cameras for 30 years. “Our daughter was almost killed at the intersection when she was 18,” she said. But there has also been criticism of a decision to remove a red light camera from the nearby intersection of Francis Street and Williamstown Road. Driver’s road rage terror By Meredith Eriksson, The Age A Footscray man cowered in fear and disbelief last week as an attacker beat his car’s windscreen into shards of glass. Brenton Davey, 31, was driving home at 9.45pm on Thursday when three monkey bike riders pulled out in front of him on Ballarat Road, Sunshine. Mr Davey blasted his horn as the riders, without helmets, weaved in and out of traffic at high speed. When he reached the Anderson Road intersection, the bikes pulled up behind him with their lights off. The men dismounted and tried to wrench open his car’s locked rear doors. Boxed in on all sides and unable to escape, Mr Davey listened as the riders moved their attack along the car, thumping side panels as they closed in. The main attacker began to beat the windscreen, unflinching as it splintered into his bare fists and blood splattered over the glass. “I was terrified,” Mr Davey said. “I’m sitting there just trying not to look at him, looking about the car making sure everything is locked. He’s injuring himself going nuts trying to get to me.” The central assailant then began to spit at the window, his face inches from Mr Davey. When the lights turned green, the assailants fled, riding north up McIntyre Road. The attack happened 50 metres from Sunshine police station. The offenders are described as in their late teens or early 20s, Caucasian, of average height with short, dark hair. The central assailant wore a white T-shirt. Anyone who saw the incident is being asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Lifesavers to the rescue Fifteen swimmers were rescued at Altona beach last week as wild winds whipped up waves and ripped beach tents from the sand. Altona Life Saving Club president Steve Schofield said many more beachgoers, besides the 15, needed help from lifesavers as a sudden storm hit about 6pm on Wednesday. “A number of people got into trouble very quickly and we went through the process of a mass rescue, including use of the IRB [inflatable rescue boat], boards and tubes,” Mr Schofield said. “Because the wind change came so quickly, the waves came up a little bit and pushed people against the pier. “There were also people out of their depth in quite calm water. When they realised they couldn’t touch the bottom, they panicked. The great thing is that there were no fatalities and no need for an ambulance.” Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Peter Newham said wind speeds of 83km/h were recorded at Laverton at 5.43pm. “Avalon, just a bit further along, gusted to 93km/h at 5.30pm,” he said. “It got to 44 degrees at Laverton at 4.30pm. At 5pm it was still 43 and by 6pm it had dropped to 32.” Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club closed its pool for safety reasons when the storm hit.

‘Tallest flats’ anger residents By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona residents are up in arms over an application to build what would be the suburb’s tallest residential building. Developer Redleigh Investments is proposing a six-storey apartment block and retail centre on the corner of Sargood and Blyth streets, with a shortfall of 12 parking spaces. The site currently has two single-storey houses on it. Redleigh has submitted plans to Hobsons Bay council for a 35-dwelling residential development, with two shops, an office and 63

on-site parking spaces – 12 fewer than required under the council planning scheme. A traffic impact assessment, prepared for the applicant by O’Brien Traffic, concluded “there is typically abundant on-street and off-street parking within close proximity to the subject site”. Objector Aaron Hunt said residents felt the large-scale development did not fit the neighbourhood character and would exacerbate existing parking issues. “From the people I’ve spoken to, it’s pretty clear the community expects the council to be active in preserving the future look, feel

and amenity of our suburb, not leave it to the whims of developers,” he said. “The planning scheme relating to the Altona activity centre provides no mandatory height limit on new construction. “Without a mandatory height limit, council is at risk of sponsoring an ‘anything goes’ approach to planning.

“Council identified the need for an increase in parking to accommodate new activity within the Altona centre yet they keep issuing exemptions to developers from providing new carparking to meet the needs of these new developments. “The clear result is ever-increasing parking congestion during peak times.” The architect acting for the developer, Vincent Interlandi, said he was in far north Queensland and could not comment without the drawings and reports to refer to. The tallest residential building in Altona is five storeys.

Inner-west theatre company Wit Incorporated will hold weekly drama classes at Braybrook Community Hub from February 1 for a cost of $20 a term. Artistic director Belinda Campbell, who designed and will deliver the Wit Kids Braybrook program for children aged five to 12, says that having space to create, pretend and socialise in a supportive environment is an important part of children’s development and learning. “There’s a level of camaraderie and closeness that’s necessary in drama class that the children don’t experience in many other places,” she said. “Sport is competitive, school is about grades, but in drama class we all work together to create stories.”

A photographic exhibition about Altona’s Toyota plant will be hosted by the Altona Laverton Historical Society to coincide with this year’s Australia Day events. Organiser Owen Hyde says the exhibition, Toyota Altona 2015, will be displayed throughout the Altona Homestead Museum. “The exhibition is a display of photographs of the Altona plant and will highlight the historic and social context of Toyota’s presence in the community of Altona,” Mr Hyde said. Toyota will shut its Altona plant next year in a move expected to cost 2600 jobs. The closure will mark the end of an era for car manufacturing in Australia as Toyota joins Holden and Ford in shutting up shop. Since

The exhibition will feature the work of three photographers commissioned by Toyota to capture the plant’s people and processes. Award-winning photographers Jane Brown, Jean-Marc La-Roque and Dave Tacon spent more than three weeks taking black and white and colour photos at the factory. “After spending many days inside the Altona plant, I could sense a great deal of pride and passion among the employees,” La-Roque said. A developer has applied to build a five-storey apartment block at Altona after plans for a seven-storey building were rejected by Hobsons Bay council and the state’s planning tribunal. Footscray-based Fremont Homes has lodged new plans for a five-storey development at 118 Pier Street, including 26 dwellings, two shops and 29 parking spaces.

Tower plans headed to court By Benjamin Millar A 1400-apartment multi-tower plan for the Kinnears ropeworks site at Footscray is headed for court. R & F Estate launched legal action against Maribyrnong council with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last month after the council failed to approve the company’s development proposal for the 3.3-hectare Ballarat Road site, one of Melbourne’s largest apartment developments. The council is arguing it cannot decide on the

plan to build eight apartment towers, ranging from five to 18 storeys, as the developer did not supply all required documentation. The applicant submitted its plans to council on August 27. They were then referred on to Heritage Victoria [HV] on September 23. The council’s case hinges on the developer’s failure to provide a conservation management plan endorsed by HV’s executive director at the time it submitted its development plan for 1450 new dwellings, retail, a supermarket, offices and community services. The Kinnears site was rezoned in 2011, and

in 2012 a special planning overlay was created to pave the way for the project. R & F Estate conceded that, at this stage, there was no HV-endorsed conservation management plan as required by the overlay. On December 24 VCAT rejected Maribyrnong council’s attempt to call off a scheduled hearing on April 26 that will decide whether the project can proceed. VCAT deputy president Helen Gibson ruled that, given the HV endorsement was likely in coming weeks, it was “in the interests of justice” that the VCAT hearing go ahead.

“It is a technicality that is likely to be remedied before a final decision and does not inhibit the council’s substantive assessment of the development plan.” Ms Gibson noted a “commercial imperative” to have the plan approved by July 18, or the $60 million contract of sale for the land may be terminated. “The critical issue is whether it is in the interests of justice to disregard a failure to comply,” she said. “In the present case, I consider it is in the interests of justice.”

Nikita to star on Oz Day Award-winning singer Nikita Azzopardi will perform the national anthem at this year’s Australia Day celebrations in Altona, which culminate in a beach fireworks display at dusk. The special day kicks off with an Australia Day breakfast at Altona RSL, featuring media commentator and entrepreneur Fabian Dattner. The Altona Village Traders Association has organised a host of free events from 11am, centred on Logan Reserve, Pier Street and Altona beach. Activities will include a junior triathlon, sand castle competition, camel rides, double decker bus tours, horse and carriage rides and an Aussie car display. Ms Azzopardi heads up a huge line-up of live music at Logan Reserve, including a playing of the national anthem at 12.45pm. “I’m proud and honored to be a part of Australia Day and look forward to being on

stage as part of a wider local music community and supporting Australian-made music in general,” she said. Among this year’s stall operators will be a My Smart Garden team, offering free seeds at Logan Reserve from 10am-4pm. The team will also host two 45-minute workshops: organic pest control at 11.30am and how to grow healthy fruit trees, from 1.30pm. A free outdoor concert will be held outside Altona Sports Club from 2-6pm, with headline act Alfi Rocker Band performing songs from iconic Australian bands. Doubt cast on distributor benefit By Benjamin Millar Question marks loom over the benefits of the Western Distributor to inner-west residents, as the state government promises to ramp up consultation with the community. The $5.5 billion project will widen the West Gate Freeway, create a tunnel under Yarraville and provide an extra Maribyrnong River crossing and elevated road along Footscray Road. The Victoria Greens have analysed a business case presented by the state government to Canberra in the hope of attracting a third of the required funds. Their analysis found

benefits to residents had been overstated, while the likely impacts on health, amenity and open space were downplayed. Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the true costs of the Western Distributor were not reflected in the costbenefit ratio. “The new tolls for this road and extended tolls for City Link are a significant cost to the community yet they are not factored into the cost-benefit ratio for the project,” Ms Hartland said. “This is a massively expensive project at about $5.5 billion. Built on Berlin bodies Queer artist Eureka, aka Michael O’Hanlon, held his first exhibition as a gay man at Altona’s Joel Gallery five years ago. It was part of Midsumma and also the first GLBTIQ exhibition in Hobsons Bay and Melbourne’s west. Five years on, western suburbs’ councils have banded together to host a swag of GLBTIQ events over a three-month period under the banner GOWEST and coinciding with Midsumma. Eureka, 58, has also come a long way since that first exhibition at Joel Gallery, and later at Footscray Community Arts Centre. His latest exhibition, Deoupages d’hommes, is a compilation of works from an artistic residency in Berlin. “I was one of eight international artists there

and it was three months – it was like Big Brother for artists … it was intensive. “This series combines my love of architecture with my love of men,” he said. “[Berlin] has a different attitude to the body. They have this thing called FKK, which is basically free body culture, which emphasises that there’s nothing wrong at all with the naked human body. “There’s this wonderful honesty about the body, and acceptance, which is one of the reasons I was motivated to do this in Berlin. “It’s no trouble at all finding models that’ll take their clothes off and pose for you. It’s much harder in Melbourne.” Deoupages d’hommes runs until January 20 at Fortyfivedownstairs, Flinders Lane.

MY PLACE Anyone who enjoys a visit to the urban oasis that is Yarraville’s Cruickshank Park can thank Peter and Lola Anderson for their tireless campaign to make it what it is today. They spoke to Benjamin Millar about their love for the area. Peter: I was actually born in Yarraville – there used to be a maternity hospital in Tongue Street – so I’ve lived in Yarraville all my life. I lived in Tuppen Street so can remember as a little boy all the quarry holes. In 1959, we moved here to Finlay Street. There were quarries directly behind us but they were filled up by 1954. In those days there were Scottish thistles, it was just like the wild west. Lola: I’m an old Footscray girl – I lived in Footscray all my life prior to here. My dad had a fish shop in Buckley Street then we moved into Errol Street. I met Pete at what used to be the old Footscray Tech boys dance. We played tennis with the Yarraville Tennis Club, Peter since 1954 and me since 1952. We’re life members. We’ve done all that plus bring up two children. We have four grandchildren and we’ve just got a lovely great grandson, Xavier. We’ve been in this house for 56 years. What do you love most about Yarraville? Lola: We just love the people, the mix – everyone says hello. Our great interest is Cruickshank Park, to make sure that it’s safe for everybody. It’s nothing to do with Pete and I – it’s all for Cruickshank Park because we just love it. We love Yarraville Village, the Yarraville Tennis Club, our little shopping centre … the whole of Yarraville is so friendly. We were babies when we came here now we’re the old farts of the street. We have a street party every Christmas just so everybody gets to

know each other. It’s just a lovely community, it really is. It gives us so much pride to see how much people love Cruickshank Park. Peter: When we built this house, we said we would be here for five years and 56 years later we’re still here. How did a former quarry wasteland become such a popular park? Lola: Just perseverance, absolute perseverance. Just hounding, hounding. Peter kept on going to council and they kept on telling him no, it can’t be done because there’s too many surface rocks and you can’t cut the grass. They removed some of the rocks and there has never been any grass planted – it’s just what’s there. So then they decided they would do it. That was in 1972 … they invited Peter and other residents to join meetings every month right through until they started planting. We have plantings on the first Sunday in July and the last Sunday in July, as well as Clean Up Australia Day in March. What are the biggest changes you have seen in the area? Lola: The big houses that are being built in the area and the townhouses. More traffic as well. Gardens have got better – you walk through and think, gee, that looks nice. People in the area take pride in their houses, they look after their gardens and they talk to you as you walk past. Peter: Our street has changed down the other end. There’s supposed to be a big development at Bradmill but that’s been slow. It will eventually happen but it has been very slow.

“We know vandalism goes on all over Footscray, but we have not sufficient men to stop this,” Sergeant Don Henderson, officer-in-charge of the Footscray police station. Sgt Henderson was being interviewed about reports of vandalism in Footscray Park and other parklands throughout the municipality. “What we are fighting for is more police,” he said. “We are trying desperately to get extra police at Footscray.”

Police appealed yesterday for public help in solving the $300,000 fire at Tottenham Technical School, in Braybrook, early on Sunday morning, and the $500,000 fire at Maidstone Primary School the previous weekend. The chief of Sunshine CIB, Detective Senior-Sergeant Lloyd Harrington, said it was in every citizen’s interests to co-operate with the police in their investigation. The Braybrook fire was first spotted by a passing police patrol.

Williamstown’s controversial $1.2 million boat launching ramp will not go ahead. Planning and Environment Minister Evan Walker refused consent for the boat ramp last week citing safety as one of the main reasons. The move has not only cost Williamstown ratepayers $46,000 but infuriated Labor councillors, who have sent a deputation to Mr Walker demanding that he reverse his decision.

A Newport resident has issued a warning to Hobsons Bay pet owners after a spate of dog baitings. Glenys Churchin said four dogs had died after being poisoned over the past six months and owners of several more had been sent threatening letters. Mrs Churchin, herself a dog owner, said those in the neighbourhood were worried.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir’s quest for the ultimate burger hits Footscray There’re two new burger joints about to open right in Footscray central. Where is it going to end? Will it ever end? Melbourne’s rather rabid fondness for new-school burger joints seems to know no limits. There seems to be one, or more, opening every week … all this activity attended by a plethora of media stories, blog posts and click-bait lists. Truth to tell, I have been a foot-dragging participant in our visit to St Burgs. I feel a bit a burger fatigue, but have been worn down by Bennie’s persistent requests. The tipping point came during our visit to try the fine Turkish fare at the taxi driver hangout, Platinum Cafe, in North Melbourne. There, Bennie asked of Nat Stockley, noted burger fan and expert: “So what is your favourite burger place?” St Burgs is the first establishment he mentions. So off we go … St Burgs is unusually located … in an apartment block down the hill from the Edgewater shopping-eating precinct. There is no parking, forcing punters to walk from the parking spots at the shops. And, so far as I can see, there are no toilets. The burger shop is tiny in terms of in-house eating, with most of the seating outdoors. Thankfully, on the Sunday we visit, the weather is fine. Whatever the challenges St Burgs presents,

My Western Fried Chicken burger ($12) is very good. Joining coleslaw, cheese and Sriracha mayo is a fat, juicy and deep-fried hunk of very flavoursome chook breast. Bennie absolutely adores his Double D burger ($14). It’s pretty much the St Burgs’ version of “with the lot”. I ask Bennie: “But isn’t it much the same as what you get at Dude Food Man or 8bit?” His reply: “No – this is better!” So there you go – the verdict is in. I find our regular chips ($5) to be disappointing – a bit limp, not very hot and liberally anointed with indifferent seasoning. Bennie agrees. We reckon deep-fried potato + salt = excellent. SPORT Williamstown revels in the twilight zone T20 finals day is fast becoming one of the most anticipated events on the sub-district calendar. Four teams will meet on a super Sunday of cricket at Altona on January 31 with semi-finals early in the day and the grand final in late afternoon. The format has been given a big thumbs up from McDonald. “It’s the perfect set-up,” he said. “I don’t think we should be taking it into home and away cricket. It’s a really good way of doing it, to create a good environment at the finals.” The Seagulls will meet Brunswick in their semi-final for the right to face either Oakleigh

or Croydon in the grand final. The Gulls largely had Matthew Twentyman to thank after their win over Hoppers Crossing. He made 50 not out – his second half-century of the tournament – and then took 3-20 off four overs. “He’s done really well with the bat in the T20s,” McDonald said. Guest player Jordan Rhodes, loaned by Premier Cricket club Greenvale Kangaroos, took 2-21 from his four overs. Necessity spurs move

I never thought I’d see the day when this column would talk about a frisbee club. But Hoppers Crossing Sports Club president Darren Hellmann welcomed a frisbee club and Wyndhamvale Junior Baseball Club to the Sports Club last Sunday. The occasion was Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club’s president’s lunch, attended by about 100 people including life members, past presidents, past players and sponsors. Rodney Hogg and Tony Liberatore were guest speakers and it was also great to hear the president of the VSDCA, Jack Sheehan, say how thrilled the association was to have a club like Hoppers in the competition. The sports club’s awards night is coming up at Hogans Road Reserve on February 20. Tickets are available from the club for $30. For your information the frisbee club trains at Hogans Road every Wednesday.

By Lance Jenkinson VU-Western Spurs are forecasting rapid growth after packing up and moving to a new home base. The Spurs (women’s Australian rules) will settle in at Henry Turner Reserve in Footscray this season and beyond after turning their back on Kings Park Reserve in St Albans after years of calling it home. The move was seen by the Spurs as a necessity as they embark on their first season in the inaugural AFL Victoria women’s football state league. Head of Spurs media Kelly Borradale said the club was excited about the “big” move. “It brings us into an area where we’ve got a better catchment for players and we’ve got some great partnerships now with Maribyrnong City Council and Victoria University,” she said. “We needed to be a bit more central. With our partnership with VU, we can promote the club a lot easier because they’re just across the road.” The decision to leave St Albans was not taken lightly. The Spurs football team and St Albans Sports Club had combined to foster women’s football in the west from a grassroots level. The Spurs were part of the premier division of the Victorian Women’s Football League but always had an eye on youth development, running Auskick clinics for girls and promoting homegrown players into their seniors. “We had a good working relationship with St Albans and they did look after us for a number of years. We’re very grateful to them for that,” Borradale said. “But we sat down and explained our reasons [for the Footscray move] and they were quite understanding and supportive.” The move to Footscray ticks many boxes for the Spurs. Top of the list is the chance to work more closely with Victoria University. They also get to stand alone as the west’s only state league women’s team, and the central location will help them build a following and attract new players. The facilities at Henry Turner Reserve, which already house WRFL club Parkside and Premier Cricket club Footscray Edgewater, could be set to receive a boost through the Spurs’ partnership with Maribyrnong council. “Our transition team went for a walk through the facilities to check out the rooms and they were quite impressed,” Borradale said. “Once a grant is applied for, we’ll get an extension to the rooms, so it’s a very exciting change for us.” Led by head coach Debbie Lee and assistant coach Jordan Roughead, the Spurs have put together one of the most exciting coaching teams in the competition. Their exciting playing list includes Bree White, who has featured for Melbourne against the Western Bulldogs in AFL women’s matches in recent years. Two of their up-and-coming

He has started work at Hunter French Real Estate’s Newport office in Melbourne Road and has reunited with former Williamstown superstar Saade Ghazi, the 1989 Liston Trophy winner. Like Brendan, he is a Williamstown Football Club Hall of Famer. And as coach of Altona in the WRFL this season, the real estate cry of ‘position, position, position’ is not a great stretch from what Saade might be calling to his charges.

The annual Peter ‘Bunny’ Bunworth memorial cricket day is on Sunday, February 7 and this year it’s Hoppers Crossing’s turn to host the event. It’s a fun day, with a 30-over match for over-35s players. ‘Bunny’ played at Hoppers then coached at Wyndhamvale and was a popular character.

Williamstown is heading to the final four of sub-district cricket’s Twenty20 twilight competition. The Seagulls went through the four-game group stage undefeated, booking their spot in the semi-finals with a 29-run win over Hoppers Crossing at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Tuesday. Seagulls captain-coach Dale McDonald said his young side would relish a rare chance to experience finals pressure. “It’s a fantastic effort for the club,” he said. “We haven’t played finals of any kind for a few years and T20s are taken pretty seriously this year, so it’s really good.”
