Carols with star power Stars of stage and screen will lend their talents to Yarraville’s Carols in the Gardens this Saturday night. Thousands of people are expected to turn out for the 22nd anniversary of the carols evening, a free event hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Yarraville and West Footscray and the Footscray-Yarraville City Band. Australian stage, television and film actor Kevin Harrington will compere the event featuring local performers and guest artists. A mass choir will bring together choristers from the School of Hard Knocks, Footscray Sings, THECHO!R, Willin Wimmin and The Divine Divas of Sunbury. The Footscray-Yarraville City Band, Hyde Street Youth Band, Western Brass and pianist Adam Przewlocki will provide music along with opera singers including Danielle Matthews, Belinda Sofra, Nicholas Coghlan, Adrian McEniery and internationally acclaimed local soprano Margaret Haggart. A special guest appearance by Santa is tipped, and the evening will be completed with the traditional fireworks display. MPs rack up the fines By Ben Cameron and Benjamin Millar Federal Gellibrand MP Tim Watts is urging locals to be safe on the roads at Christmas after admitting he received seven speeding fines in six months last year. The warning coincides with questions being asked about Maribyrnong MP and federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten’s driving record after he sideswiped a number of parked cars and was caught on video using his mobile phone while driving. Documents seen by Star Weekly show Mr Watts exceeded the speed limit – by less than 10 kilometres an hour on each occasion – seven

times between July 21 and December 20, 2014. “Members of Parliament aren’t perfect, and I’ll put my hand up here, and be open and honest with my constituents,” Mr Watts said. “I haven’t had any since and I paid for all of them personally.” Mr Watts admitted he’d had a bad period of driving, but he did not offer a reason for his speeding. He also recorded a speeding fine in June 2013. In a wide-ranging, end-of-year interview, Mr Watts also gave Mr Shorten his full support, despite a dire approval rating of 14 per cent last week. “There’s no doubt being Opposition leader

is the hardest job in Australia,” he said. “He [Shorten] is somebody who never shies away from a challenge. If you’d asked me after the last federal election if we could be where we are now … I think it’s been an extraordinary achievement.” Mr Shorten last week apologised after he was caught on camera using his phone while driving. The Labor leader was shown in an August 23 video holding his phone while driving at 40km/h along Kings Way. “I made a mistake. I take the matter seriously; it was wrong to do and there’s no good excuse so I won’t offer one. It’s wrong, and I’ve apologised,” he told a press conference.

“No one is above the law. The whole Labor Party has zero tolerance for wrongdoing – beyond that I can’t add any more.” The Labor leader said he did not remember why he was using his phone while he was behind the wheel but could not rule out that he was texting. The witness who recorded the footage said he decided to share the video after hearing that Mr Shorten last month crashed into a number of cars in North Carlton. Victoria Police issued Mr Shorten with a $218 fine over the North Carlton incident. He paid a $455 fine and lost four demerit points for using his mobile, and also donated to Road Trauma Support Services.

Remembering the heroism of Roger Bertocci On Monday 14 December, a memorial plaque was unveiled by the Altona Rotary Club to commemorate Mr Roger Bertocci, an Altona resident who was fatally stabbed after going to the aid of a pregnant lady who was under attack. Residents fight tunnel vision By Benjamin Millar Yarraville residents have vowed to keep up their fight to protect open green space from the Western Distributor. Star Weekly last week reported a tunnel will be built under Yarraville and a new road will cross the Maribyrnong River as a result of the state government giving Transurban’s $5.5 billion Western Distributor plan the green light. A preliminary social impact assessment attached to the business case noted the West Gate golf course, Stony Creek Reserve, McIvor Reserve and Donald W McLean Reserve may

be impacted. Concerned Locals of Yarraville spokesman Scott Ellerton said inclusion of a ‘West Gate option’, with a southern tunnel portal located at the West Gate Freeway rather than linking via ramps over Hyde Park Reserve, was a cause for hope. “We are pleased there is a West Gate option on the table and we’ll be pushing for an option with a portal not in the Hyde Street Reserve,” Mr Ellerton said. However, the Western Distributor technical options report, submitted with the business case by the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources, indicates clear preference for the ‘Hyde option’. This cites drawbacks to the West Gate option,

including emergency vehicle access, longer and more disruptive construction, impacting on West Gate Freeway traffic for up to three years during works. Transurban chief executive Scott Charlton said the company would continue to consult on route alignments and design. “We are committed to finding the best solution for the local residents, including the option of building a longer tunnel while retaining connections for trucks to Hyde Street.” Western suburbs Liberal MP Bernie Finn last week told Parliament that “very real concerns exist among residents of Melbourne’s

inner west as to the impact this road will have on their lives”. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the decision to proceed with the distributor was a win for residents of Melbourne’s inner west, who have long fought to end truck congestion. “Now that the project has moved to the next stage, the government will conduct its own consultation process … including location of the tunnel entry and exit points.” Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the announcement failed to give answers or firm commitments. “We have seen Labor’s true colours. They have ignored the Port Inquiry’s recommendations.”

VU opens west to tech vistas Victoria University hopes to revitalise TAFE training in the west with the launch of Victoria Polytechnic. Council’s rating is below par By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong residents are still less satisfied with their council than the Melbourne average, despite the council bouncing back from its lowest satisfaction rating in a decade. The 2015 annual community survey rated satisfaction levels with the council’s overall performance at an average of 6.64 out of 10 – up from 6.14 in 2014 but below the metropolitan Melbourne average of 6.81 and western region average of 6.86. The 12th survey undertaken by Metropolis Research on behalf of the council involved

face-to-face interviews with 800 randomly selected households during July and August. “Satisfaction with the overall performance of the city of Maribyrnong improved substantially in 2015 (up 8.1 per cent), reversing much of the decline reported last year,” the survey report found. “Despite these increases, satisfaction with the overall performance and governance and leadership of the city of Maribyrnong remains somewhat lower than the metropolitan Melbourne averages.” The five most commonly identified issues by respondents to the survey included traffic

management (18.5 per cent), car parking (18.4 per cent), cleanliness of the area (8.6 per cent), road maintenance and repairs (8.4 per cent), and safety, policing and crime (7.4 per cent). “The issues of roads, parking, and cleanliness of the area all appear to have had a negative impact on satisfaction with council’s overall performance,” according to the report. Satisfaction scores increased for 19 of 34 service areas, and ‘excellent’ scores (above 7.75) were recorded for garbage and recycling collection, libraries, and services for seniors and children. But ‘poor’ satisfaction scores (below 6) went to parking enforcement, public

toilets and the maintenance and cleaning of Footscray CBD. Maribyrnong residents were the most satisfied with their council in the western suburbs (7.01) and Seddon residents were unhappiest (6.02). Respondents reported a relatively positive sense of community; they saw graffiti as a problem in Maribyrnong (up from 6.32 to 6.86) and felt the council should encourage spaces for legal graffiti artists (up from 7.40 to 7.64). Fewer than half were aware of the council’s advocacy on the issues of trucks and freight and just under a quarter correctly identified the mayor.

Maribyrnong kill appeal denied

A Maribyrnong man who worked for one of Australia’s biggest drug syndicates has lost his bid to overturn his conviction for murdering nightclub promoter Yengo Faugere. Matthew Lowe, 26, was jailed for 21 years and eight months, with a non-parole period of 16 years, after a Supreme Court jury found him guilty of murdering Mr Faugere. Lowe appealed against his conviction but Court of Appeal Chief Justice Marilyn Warren and Justices Robert Redlich and Ross Robson last week quashed the appeal.

Kids do their bit for kids Students at Altona P-9 College are collecting items for a local organisation to give homeless and at-risk youth a better Christmas. Year 7 students have collaborated with Altona-based Latitude, an organisation that supports youth from 15-25. Teacher Joshua Moore said the children had contacted businesses to obtain donations for Latitude Christmas hampers. Drop-off boxes for community donations have also been set up in the school’s office and at Elle and Stuart Boutique at 89 Pier Street, Altona. Hobsons Bay council also has a box in its staff lunch room. “[The students] have been contacting multinational corporations, local organisations

and local businesses asking for donations that homeless kids would want,” Mr Moore said. “They’ve been out emailing and walking the streets and approaching businesses. It’s been really good for our kids to see the world from another person’s perspective.” Latitude manager Rhonda Collins described the students’ actions as “absolute gold”. “It’s young people supporting young people and that’s just magic,” she said. “They came to us; they wanted to find a way to assist us.” Donations sought include tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits, pasta, rice, sauce, soup, canned food, cereal, spreads, long-life milk and juice, and toilet paper. Police are investigating a fire that broke out in a West Footscray rubbish pile, sending smoke across Melbourne early on Monday. Be here for next year, cops plead Police are pleading with motorists to take extra care on the roads over Christmas as latest figures show that fixed road safety cameras in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong netted $2.2 million last quarter alone. The city of Maribyrnong’s highest-revenue camera, on the corner of Somerville and Geelong roads at Yarraville, produced $260,928 in fines from July to September. The cameras detect speeding, red-light and unregistered vehicle offences. Other speeding hotspots were the corner of Geelong Road and Droop Street, Footscray, where cameras recorded $219,293 in fines, and the corner of Duke Street and Ballarat Road, Braybrook, where camera revenue totalled $181,750. In Hobsons Bay, cameras on the corner of Blackshaws and Millers roads, Altona North, netted $139,705. The breakdown for the Altona North cameras was 300 infringements for vehicles travelling west, and 71 for vehicles travelling east. Figures on the Department of Justice’s Cameras Save Lives website also showed West Gate Freeway cameras inbound at Brooklyn and outbound at Altona North detected more than 4000 speeding motorists over the three-month period, with fines totalling $985,000. Hobsons Bay police’s Inspector Michelle Young said fixed cameras should not be an issue for diligent drivers who obey speed limits and other traffic controls. “It can only take one brief moment of

Swim swap a splash hit Williamstown’s Ashleigh Gould will aim for national glory when her local life-saving club hosts Victoria’s top open-water swimming event on Saturday. Breaking with 25 years’ tradition, Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club decided that instead of holding its annual Australia Day swim, it would host the Victorian open-water championships and the Williamstown open-water challenge (WOW). Ms Gould, 18, trained for about 20 hours a week while preparing for VCE exams. She needs to swim five kilometres in under 70 minutes to qualify for February’s national open-water swimming titles in Mooloolaba. “I had a bad shoulder injury all last year so I was out for almost six months,” Ms Gould said.

“I was in year 12 this year so I had to slack off training, but I’d normally train eight times a week, 16 hours or more in the water, plus about three hours of weights and strength training.” Club president Matt McCarroll said 560 swimmers had registered as of last week – more than double last year’s number. “It was a big decision to move away from our traditional Australia Day swim so we’re delighted with what looks sure to be record-breaking numbers,” he said. River teahouse brewing By Benjamin Millar A $1.5 million “teahouse” will be built on the site of the Blackbird river ferry by the end of next year under a proposal revealed by Maribyrnong council. Under the plans, developer Castlewell Pty Ltd will build the 140-seat cafe-restaurant on Crown land beside the Maribyrnong River. The developer will have a heavily discounted lease before rights to the property revert to the council in 21 years. The proposed draft lease was presented to Tuesday night’s council meeting. It fulfils a

contract signed by the council in 1998 for development of part of the Saltwater Precinct. The restaurant operators will pay rent to the council of $114 a year for the first 10 years, climbing to $2750 in years 11 to 15 and $5500 in years 16 to 21. Once the lease expires, the council will be able to rent the site at market rates, now estimated to be valued at $65,000 a year. The development will also include an office for Maribyrnong River Cruises and moorings for the iconic Blackbird, as well as public moorings. A planning permit has been granted and the 21-year lease will commence following

approval by Environment, Climate Change and Water Minister Lisa Neville. Construction is scheduled to begin within months and be completed by the end of next year. Maribyrnong River Cruises captain Peter Somerville, who has run the Blackbird on the river since 1979, has expressed concern about the impact on his operations during the construction phase and the loss of his mooring for much of the year. The report on the proposal noted discussions on this matter were ongoing. Public submissions will be invited on the 21-year-lease proposal.

A pop-up park proposed for West Footscray has been given a thumbs down by the community. Maribyrnong councillor Catherine Cumming floated the idea of the temporary park in Blandford Street, linking Martin and Shorten reserves, in September. But a report to Tuesday’s council meeting showed only one in five residents and park users supported the plan. Three options were floated, costing from $20,000 to $200,000. Just 18 of 93 emailed submissions and a survey form backed the park, with Footscray West Primary School among 75 objectors. Those in support cited such benefits as reducing traffic and creating a quiet and social space amid busy streets. Reasons against the plan included traffic impacts, loss of parking spaces, safety for children around the school drop-off zone, and proximity of existing parks. Some people supported a West Footscray pop-up park, but at a different location. Meanwhile, sustainable development director Nigel Higgins says the council is still searching for an alternative site for a pop-up park in Footscray’s CBD after deciding against using the Paisley Street carpark, as originally proposed. More than just a library Work on a $4.6 million community hub in Footscray could begin as early as next June. The final design of the hub, an expansion of the existing library on Paisley Street, was presented to Tuesday’s Maribyrnong council meeting. The council has allocated $1.5 million to the project in the current budget, while a further allocation of $3.35 million is expected in the 2016-17 budget. The project will consolidate the library and a new building to be built to the east into a hub with a new entrance. The design includes a function room for 206 people, three meeting rooms and a private room for prayer and breast-feeding, as well as a reception area, kitchen and retention of the existing library courtyard.

“It is considered the design provides for a range of user groups and functions and suitably integrates with the existing library,” a council report states. The main function room will open up into the existing courtyard and be able to be divided into two 70-seat rooms to cater for groups such as the Footscray Senior Citizens, which was forced out of its former home on Buckley Street in 2011 after 35 years to make way for the Regional Rail Link. Community consultation will include a forum, meetings with existing user groups and displays at the library. Works are due to go to tender in April with a building contractor to be appointed in June. Parking ‘not the main obstacle’ By Goya Dmytryshchak Parking fees in Williamstown are not the main deterrent to people visiting Nelson Place, a report to Hobsons Bay council has found. This was despite traffic analysis showing that more cars parked there during a free parking trial period. The council in August launched a three-month free parking trial from Mondays to Thursdays at Nelson Place.

An analysis during the free trial found parking space usage jumped from 38 per cent to as high as 66 per cent during the school holidays, after fees were waived. A report presented at Tuesday night’s council meeting stated surveys undertaken during the trial highlighted that while paid parking was of some concern it was not viewed as the main obstacle to people visiting Nelson Place. “It was found that the dominant reason why

people either did not visit Nelson Place, or would like to see improvement, related to the competitiveness with surrounding areas and retail precincts,” the report stated. The report recommended that council adopt a Nelson Place Action Plan, compiled by its officers, to improve the shopping precinct. It also wants the council to allocate $250,000 in next year’s budget for the plan’s implementation.

Under the action plan, aspects identified as needing improvement in Nelson Place include the streetscape, businesses activities and marketing. Varying the time of paid parking and including a small number of short-term free parking spaces have been suggested as part of the plan. Paid parking in Nelson Place brings in about $800,000 in revenue and $350,000 in fines annually. Hobsons Bay residents are exempt from the $3 per hour parking fee.

A Seddon resident has been recognised during this month’s Climate Change conference in Paris with a United Nations award for his work to help Pacific island nations facing rising sea levels. Nathan Quadros is education manager at CRC for Spatial Information, which picked up the Climate Solutions award for a project co-created with NGIS Australia. The ‘Mapping Exposure to Sea Level Rises’ project is helping communities in Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea to use online tools to prepare for and adapt to sea level rises brought about by climate change. More than 200 people have been trained to use the tools so far. More than 10,000 buildings in the region have been identified as at high risk of inundation within 80 years. They include schools, hospitals and critical infrastructure.

Tributes to a moral man A memorial for an Altona North ‘good Samaritan’, Roger Bertocci, was unveiled on Monday, marking the 12-month anniversary of his death. Mr Bertocci, 46, was fatally stabbed about 200 metres from his Knapp Street home after going to the aid of a pregnant woman allegedly being attacked by her partner. He left behind his wife, Helen, and their daughters, Ashlee, 15, and Brylee, age two. Hobsons Bay council, supported by Altona Rotary, installed a seat and plaque, and planted a tree, at GJ Hosken Reserve near the Bertocci family home. It commemorates Mr Bertocci’s life and sacrifice and is intended to symbolise the community’s rejection of men’s violence

By Goya Dmytryshchak Maidstone’s Scovell Reserve has been ranked as the equal-worst football ground in the west, with St Albans’ Errington Reserve also in a bad way. The AFL Victoria-led Western Metropolitan Football Facilities Strategy rated Scovell Reserve 44 out of 132 points. The strategy has been developed with regional football leagues and Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Wyndham, Brimbank and Melton councils. It recognises that football participation across the west does not stop at municipal boundaries. Scovell Reserve, used by Western Region Football League umpires, has no ‘away’ teams’ rooms or umpire facilities. Yarraville’s Hanmer Reserve, used by Seddon Auskick, was ranked the second-worst ground in Maribyrnong with a rating of 58. The best three were Whitten Oval, Yarraville Oval and Shorten Reserve, rated 101, 97 and 96, espectively. Hobsons Bay’s lowest-ranked ground was WJ Crofts Reserve, used by Western Jets Football Club. It was rated 68. Second-lowest was Fearon Reserve, used by Williamstown CYMS Football Club, at 72. The three best ovals were Williamstown Cricket Ground, Altona Green Park and AW Langshaws Reserve, ranked 108, 95 and 94, respectively. Footy ovals in bad shape Hobson Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said the council was very aware of the municipality’s lowest-ranked grounds and what was needed to improve them. “It’s proposed that the 2016-17 draft budget allows for the development of a master plan for Crofts Reserve and redevelopment of the two sports grounds at Fearon Reserve,” he said.

A mind for the curious Award-winning Williamstown poet Chloe Wilson has published a collection of poems, titled Not Fox Nor Axe. Ms Wilson recently won the Flash Fiction Prize at Ireland’s West Cork Literary Festival. ““Not Fox Nor Axe collects poems I have written over the past five years, which engage with history, myth, art and the natural world,” Ms Wilson said. “There are, for example, poems about Tchaikovsky, Caravaggio, Red Riding Hood’s grandmother, Judith and Holofernes, and Rapunzel’s hair. “I’ve been fascinated with the curious and strange for as long as I can remember. The title poem contains the line: ‘Perhaps not fox nor

axe, but something gives us chase’, which I read as a kind of memento mori, and this is a theme which runs through the book.” Ms Wilson, who also teaches creative writing, is now working on a new poetry collection and writing fiction. Her previous literary awards include the Gwen Harwood Prize, John Marsden Prize for Young Australian Writers, (Melbourne) Lord Mayor’s Creative Writing Award for Poetry, and Arts Queensland Val Vallis Award. Media Release Victoria Police will be conducting Operation Roadwise during the 2015 Christmas/New Year Holiday period from Sunday 13 December 2015 to Sunday 3 January 2016 to reduce road trauma over this high risk period.

Road Policing Advisor Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said during this Road Policing Operation, Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach to Road Policing targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma being Speed, Alcohol and Drug Impairment, Mobile Phones, Fatigue and Seatbelts.

Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the Operation Roadwise during the 2015 Christmas/New Year Holiday period would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads.

Police will be targeting drivers who attend the end of year work functions as it has been identified that there is a risk that some drivers will take risks whilst they are impaired by alcohol and drugs. Motorists will see numerous Police units in marked and unmarked vehicles targeting our major arterial roads during this holiday period. Speed Camera will be set up in identified speed and high collision locations throughout the State. Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that they have frequent breaks when driving long distances. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir and friends tackle crabs for Moon Cake Day … As a recent dinner with friends wrapped up at our fave Somalian eatery at Ascot Vale, it was suggested we reconvene for a soiree during the Chinese mid-autumn festival, with the express purpose of getting gleefully sticky and messy with as much mud crab as we can handle. The festival Sunday proves too tricky, so instead five of us gather mid-week at Pacific Seafood BBQ House at Kensington, and have a ball. I confess this is unfamiliar territory for me. Do we order one mud crab – they’re priced at $65 – each? How does it work? It’s easy – the rest of us reject any ordering duties and leave it all up to She Who Organised the Gathering. Our trust is well rewarded! As with my previous visit to this newish arrival on Racecourse Road with another member of our happy group, we are served complementary soup. We love this tradition, which we also run across at various Asian and African eateries. This is plainer than most and reminds me very much of my mum’s vegetable soup, even if it is beef-based. Then it’s crab time! After consultation with the staff, it’s agreed that two crabs with accompanying noodles and a few other dishes will do us all proud. Our crabs are brought, pre-cooking, to our table for our approval – just like a bottle of wine.

It’s all very good. There is much cracking, sucking, ooo-ing and aaah-ing, as the delicious, sweet crab meat is extracted. It’s a profound pleasure to have one’s fill of fresh crab and bugger the cost. The two crabs prove plenty – in fact, the final two claws linger on the plate for several minutes before being claimed – the sauce-imbued noodles are every bit as tasty as the actual crabs. The fried rice ($10.80) is excellent and quite a cut above the regular fried rice we all know well. This is studded with good-sized chunks of roast pork and quite a few biggish, plump and wonderful prawns. Vegetables with bean curd ($19.50) makes sure we get some greenery and fungus. Our final dish – deep-fried chicken ribs with egg yolk ($22) – is a relative of the familiar salt and pepper chicken ribs, but these chook bits are richer. We’ve eaten grandly – for which pleasure the five us pay a collective few bucks under $200. So, $40 each for such fine food? Bargain! SPORT Surprise offer makes coach rethink league 3 competition – effectively the fifth division of Victorian soccer and hardly seen as a drawcard to lure talented young players. Stojcevski, fresh from a head coaching role with Green Gully in the top-tier NPL, was brought in with a view to taking the Blues to the next level. The Blues don’t want to stop at one promotion; they want to get to the top of the state leagues. “I like the challenge of getting a team up the ladder. That’s always something that ticks with me,” says Stojcevski, who has played and coached at the highest level in this country. A utility who spent time in all three areas of the ground, he played for Footscray JUST in the old National Soccer League and spent more than a decade as a coach at Green Gully

in development and senior coaching roles. He also knows the state leagues, having played and coached at the level before. “They’re looking for that bit of experience to get the right group of players together and help guide them up the ladder,” Stojcevski said. “That’s what I’ll be doing. That’s my ambition, that’s their ambition. “Division 3 is not an exciting league for young players to want to go to and I’ve been involved with clubs in divvy three and four in the past and I know that’s the case. “Most young players want to go to NPL or a state 1, so you really need to get into those prominent leagues to attract younger players.” Lance Jenkinson

Woodsmen in top order By Lance Jenkinson Spotswood has fixed the glaring deficiency that held it back from reaching Victorian Turf Cricket Association finals in the past two seasons. The Woodsmen are no longer being let down by a brittle top order thanks to the shrewd acquisitions of openers Gene Maurice and Sam Dishon. The new-look Woodsmen are riding high in the top four of the north-west division after just one blemish in five games. Woodsmen president Haydn Fletcher is delighted. “Even though we’ve got one of the best batting decks in the competition, it’s been the area where we’ve faltered,” he said. “The addition of Gene and Sam at the top of the order has taken the pressure off the other guys. “Having a bit more stability at the top is allowing the guys like Matt Leddin and ‘Browny’ [Jeremy Brown] to come in just that little bit later. “Ross Horkings is having a purple patch and he’s not having to open or come in when the ball is doing a bit … he’s making the most of the opportunity to bat a bit further down the order.” Horkings, with 233 runs at 46, is second on the league’s batting aggregate chart with three half-centuries. Maurice (158 at 31) and Brown (155 at 38) are also top-10 batsmen in the competition. The Woodsmen have an embarrassment of riches in their bowling attack with veteran Ashley Robertson (11 wickets at 7.55), skipper Andrew Dickinson (12 at 14.25) and all-rounders Maurice (12 at 10.17) and Brown 11 at 15.18) among the top 15 bowlers in the division. After two consecutive heartbreaking fifth-placed finishes in the past two summers, perhaps the Woodsmen are ready to contend at the pointy end of the season. “The confidence around the place is pretty good at the moment,” Fletcher said. In good news for Spotswood’s cricket and football clubs and the Westgate Golf Club, the proposed Western Distributor that it’s hoped will help to cure bottlenecks on western suburbs roads, is unlikely to impact greatly on the three clubs. There was a fear a new Westgate Bridge off-ramp could have been widened so much that the sports grounds at Donald McLean Reserve would be taken over by the extensions, but new plans might save the clubs from having to relocate. “Looking at the designs, I think we’ll be all right,” Fletcher said. “There’s talk we may lose a little bit of our training nets, which is a bit of a hassle because a lot of work has gone into those and you’d hate to have to start again.”

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ What a year in local sport 2015 has been. The Werribee Cup was run last Sunday and the event has been through the ringer. But I feel it’s on the rise. If it gets a permanent calendar position it has a chance to become a big day for the City of Wyndham. It will never again scale the heights of the past, but it can become relevant and important to both locals and anyone who enjoys a great day at a sports event. It will take time, so I hope those behind the scenes at the Werribee Racing Club stick with it. ■ Deer Park was never going to lose the WRFL grand final and many already have its name engraved on the Channel Seven Cup for 2016. It’s up to the other eight division one clubs to make them earn it. Wyndhamvale made history by winning the division two flag and will face one of the biggest tests in local footy. It’s a well-coached side, but will need some great recruiting and a bit of luck with injuries to make an impact in division one. Newport Power will field a senior team in division three next year and be coached by Mark Williams, the former Hawthorn star. ■ The Bulldogs were a pleasant 2015 surprise, eclipsing even the most died-in-the-wool Doggie fan’s expectations. What a revelation Bobby Murphy was as skipper. He’s a unique person, quite quirky, but you would not find a more likeable bloke or natural leader. The Whitten Oval became a footy venue again and the red, white and blue fans loved it. The emergence of players such as Easton Wood, Jake Stringer, Luke Dahlhaus and ‘the Bont’ brings an air of expectation around the club, and rightly so. ■ Williamstown won the VFL flag, reaping the reward of its plan to stand alone a few years ago. It was good to win both the senior and development flags and show the football world there are plenty of good players outside the AFL. Werribee made the finals but, as has been the case in recent years, it just couldn’t get to the final hurdle. It will be interesting to see how the Tigers shape up under full alignment with North Melbourne. ■ Thanks for your support in 2015. Have a great Christmas and New Year. Slobode Stojcevski was ready to draw the curtain on his distinguished soccer career at the end of last season. Then he took a surprise phone call from Williamstown asking for him to undertake one last mission. The competitive juices began to flow again for the 53-year-old after the contact with the Blues and he accepted the coaching role. “I was probably ready to retire at the end of last season with Green Gully,” Stojcevski told Star Weekly. “When Williamstown approached me, they spoke about the challenge they’d like to hand me and the ambition they had. Roosters smile at player losses By Lance Jenkinson Altona Roosters couldn’t be more thrilled that their playing stocks are being plundered. Six young Roosters have made their way into the professional rugby league and rugby union ranks this summer. The Roosters may not have reached the NRL Victoria finals, but their player development can be considered a success after Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad (New Zealand Warriors), Tony Tumusa (Melbourne Storm) and Kurt Bernard (Gold Coast Titans) earned contracts in the NRL, while Jamayne Taunoa-Brown (Newcastle Knights), Teru Leota and Andreas Livadaras (both Melbourne Rebels), have made under-20 squads. Roosters president Brandon Taunoa told Star Weekly it was no accident these players had landed on professional lists. “It’s good to see these kids go on to bigger things,” he said. “It’s their dream to crack the NRL and Super Rugby. “They train hard and they do the right things off the field as well as on the field. “Hard work pays off; they eat well and train well.” The Roosters have become a destination club for promising young league and union players. “He’s been playing league in Victoria since he was four,” Taunoa snr said. “Storm relocated the under-20s to the Sunshine Coast so a lot of the local kids had other options and have gone away from the Storm now. “I think it’s disappointing for us in Melbourne, but they’ve still got their 16s and 18s Storm teams and their junior development here.” It seems Storm’s loss is the Rebels’ gain after Leota and Livadaras crossed to rugby union to play with the Rebels 20s. The Roosters will have a number of talented youngsters coming through the Storm’s junior development program in 2016. Meanwhile, Altona has appointed Jason Warr as senior coach for next season.

Seagulls start at home Williamstown will begin its VFL premiership defence with two home games at Burbank Oval in early April to start the season. The Seagulls will host Richmond in the season opener before an eagerly anticipated grand final rematch with Box Hill Hawks. The round two fixture with the Hawks will be the first of two Channel Seven broadcast games for the Seagulls in the opening month of the season, along with the home clash with traditional rival Port Melbourne in round four. The Seagulls will play two night games, one

away to Casey Scorpions in round three, the other against western suburbs rivals Werribee Tigers in round five. They will also play a twilight game away to Collingwood in round nine. Footscray kicks off its season at home to Northern Blues at the Victoria University Whitten Oval. The VFL finals series will start on September 3 with the grand final on September 25.

Young stars up for a hot contest By Liam Twomey Young sports stars of the west have once again proven they have what it takes to excel. This year, 10 athletes were recognised for their outstanding sports achievements by being nominated for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with Star Weekly to honour young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved exceptional results at state and national level. Each month, a nominee receives $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in reaching their sports goals. Following the 10 monthly nominations, the grand final for the award will be held in January. All nominees from the past year are eligible to win the first prize of $5000 while two runners-up will each receive $2500.

Sunshine Western Region Sports Club vice-president Barry Watson said the nominees’ diverse range of sport would make for one of the most hotly contested finals in the award’s history. “It’s great to see so many varieties of sport resulting in so much talent at high levels,” he said. “It is no longer just footy, cricket and soccer. All sports seem to be involved, which is just great. “All the monthly winners have been closely observed by the selection committee. It is very tight and there will be a few unlucky athletes – but let’s not forget, they can all be future winners if they continue to improve.” This is the 10th year that the Yarraville Club Cricket Club has been a major sponsor of the award. In that time, Yarraville Club has donated $169,000 to past winners such as NBA player Dante Exum, Commonwealth Games

representative Morgan Mitchell, Olympic bronze medallist Rachel Jarry and AIS centre of excellence for basketball member Dejan Vasiljevic. “Their sponsorship is a very major sponsorship and one that all the winning athletes greatly appreciate,” Watson said. “For another sporting club to be donating to an award like this is sensational … we believe there is probably no other award like this in Australia.” The Sunshine Western Region Sports Club is seeking nominees for next year’s Don Deeble Rising Star Award.
