Explicit calls rock council Sexually explicit and threatening text messages sent to Maribyrnong’s two women councillors have prompted calls for a rethink on the public availability of councillors’ mobile phone numbers. Maribyrnong councillor Sarah Carter told Star Weekly sexually explicit messages and even death threats had become a regular and unsettling occurrence. She said the rise of social media had escalated a problem that had plagued her since being elected to the council in 2008. “Ever since I was elected to council this has been happening, but recently they are beyond what you would normally get,” she said. “It’s meant to shock and unsettle.” Cr Catherine Cumming said it was an issue she had silently weathered across her 18 years on council. “I’m a strong person, but I don’t believe anyone should be abused in this way,” she said. “I’m constantly aware of my safety as well as the safety of my children.” Maribyrnong councillors have their email address and mobile phone numbers posted on the council website, so as to be easily contactable by residents. But Cr Carter has questioned whether there needs to be a review of the practice in light of an escalation in threatening and sexually graphic messages. “It’s heartbreaking. One of the things we celebrate about local government is that we are not wrapped in cotton wool; we are easy to get hold of. But we need to look
at ways of safeguarding so you’re not subjecting yourself to this kind of abuse.” Cr Carter, who has blocked about 40 phone numbers, said she went public last week by posting examples of inappropriate messages on Facebook, as it was time to call out the “crass and cruel” behaviour. One of the messages she posted warns: “I have your home address. I will find you.”

“It’s not just about me; my mother sees messages like this, as does my partner, and it’s upsetting for them.” Cr Carter said the rise of social media and social media apps had made it easier than ever for people to send messages directly. “It just adds a whole suite of additional avenues for people to reach out to you.” Cr Carter said the issue was particularly upsetting given local government was “a bit of a boys’ club” and she wants to encourage more women to become involved. “Yet you may get death threats or unwanted sexual advances.” Cr Cumming said she had developed ways of minimising abuse and unwanted harassment, such as refusing to answer calls without caller ID and turning her phone to silent overnight.

Anger as parking meters close in on the Village Yarraville residents and traders are furious that Maribyrnong council will roll out parking meters next month without promised community consultation. The council has invited 13 handpicked representatives of interested parties to an “information session” at the end of this month, barely a fortnight before the planned installation of the meters. Yarraville Says No to Paid Parking convener Megan Darling said the council had broken a clear promise to consult with the community prior to implementation. “At every point along the way we have been
told this was going to be implemented with input from the community,” she said. “This information session is a box-ticking exercise, not consultation. They clearly have an agenda and are sticking to it.” Resident Hannah Whitaker said the introduction of paid parking had the potential to devastate the village atmosphere that drew her and many others to the area. She said council chief executive Stephen Wall promised in a meeting late last year that a proper consultation process would apply before paid parking began. “He absolutely undertook to undergo
community consultation; there was very little room for misunderstanding,” she said. “We asked if the community consultation would be some flimsy thing but were assured it would be thorough, open, honest and transparent.” Ms Whitaker said the council failed to invite her to the information session until she pointed out the oversight, yet she is unlikely to attend as she expects paid parking to be “steamrolled out” regardless. “They are trying to dress the wolf up in sheep’s clothing,” she said. Angry residents have been bombarding the council with emails and receiving a standard response from Mr Wall.
Food vans roll into town By Goya Dmytryshchak Food trucks are being trialled at Seaworks maritime precinct in Williamstown for the month of July in a move that has upset traders. Seaworks executive officer Pauline Hobbs says five trucks and a cart will set up outside the Pirates Tavern on Friday nights until the end of the month. She believes it will bring a diversified clientele to Williamstown, “not the people that would normally come to dine here”. “We’d like to think that it will actually add activity to the region,” Ms Hobbs said. “I think it will complement trade; some other case studies in Richmond certainly found that. “That’s not to say it’s going to happen here, that’s not to say that people are going to turn up. We really don’t know. “But we’re trialling it to see what the outcome of that is, then we’ll report it back to council and traders. “For us, it’s about activating Seaworks and having something that’s different to other places.’’ Vendors will be La Revolucion, Senor Churro, White Guy Cooks Thai, Toasta, Smokin Barrys and the Brulee Cart. Williamstown Chamber of Commerce president Laura Nardo said people should support struggling restaurants rather than food trucks. “I would prefer, and the chamber would prefer, that people supported bricks and mortar restaurants that are here year round for our locals and our tourists,” she said. “They pay rates and support should be thrown their way – not to the food trucks that can just up and leave if it’s inconvenient for them or if they don’t get business that they want, or need, to survive. “Our bricks and mortar businesses really struggle to survive, especially during the winter months,” Ms Nardo said. the trial because it would give a true indication that people would come out specifically for food trucks. “The Winter Night Market at the Vic Market works really well,” she said. “I mean, it’s not the sort of numbers that they get in summer, but certainly they get some numbers through. “If you trial it in summer, it’s likely to be successful just because it’s warm and people
are going out at night,” Ms Hobbs said. “If you trial it at this time of year when the activity is not as strong in this area … it’s actually a good time to trial something like this, because we’ll see if people will specifically come out for this,” she said. Elsewhere in Hobsons Bay, there are ice-cream vans at Point Gellibrand and Newport boat ramp, and coffee vans at Altona’s Cherry Lake and boat ramp.
It says: “I believe I have been quite clear from the outset that we would discuss the final proposed structure of when pay parking will apply, including the rationale that supports that proposal, prior to implementation.” Mayor Nam Quach said in May that installation of the meters and informatiom on when paid parking applied would be based on a council survey of parking occupancy and turnover. Program trials justice options A voluntary mediation program that has the potential to bring victims of sexual assault face to face with offenders could be used by a western health organisation. Restorative justice, described as a “soft option” by critics, will be trialled by the South Eastern Centre Against Sexual Assault from September. Its western suburbs equivalent, the Western Region Centre Against Sexual Assault, will be interested in the trial’s results. WestCASA chief executive Jane Vanderstoel said the program could be “a great tool”, providing a way for healing “that our legal system rarely offers”. “It’s an option,” she said. “ But you have to be careful to whom you offer it. “Restorative justice can be another approach or tool to use to provide recovery and healing for victims of sexual assault.” The practice rarely puts a victim and offender in a room together, however. “The process might occur between a daughter and a mother whose response may have been less than supportive in the first instance,” Ms Vanderstoel said. “It might be used in having an organisation acknowledge the gaps in its processes that provided opportunities for people to be sexually assaulted by an employee.” She said victims were often disappointed with or re-traumatised by legal and court processes. “Like many CASAs, we have taken, or will undertake training in this method,” she said. A western suburbs MP is backing community calls for a pedestrian overpass or underpass at Yarraville railway station in the wake of another boom gate bungle. Cars and pedestrians queued at the Anderson Street crossing for about 90 minutes last Thursday when a signalling fault forced the boom gates to remain down. A Metro spokeswoman said a signalling issue between Seddon and Yarraville stations just after 8am caused the gates to remain down for extended periods until 9.31am. The incident came just a day before the state government revealed fines had more than doubled for drivers and pedestrians crossing while boom gates were down. Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the latest failure emphasised the need for a pedestrian overpass or underpass. “Yarraville residents have missed out on the government’s level-crossing blitz so this problem could go on into the never-never,” she said. “A pedestrian overpass or underpass at least would improve access and safety for those on foot.” The former Anderson Street pedestrian underpass was filled in at Maribyrnong council’s request in 1997 by the former Public Transport Corporation due to problems with flooding, rubbish, graffiti, drugs and assaults. Ms Hartland recently raised the issue in Parliament with Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan. Ms Allan told Star Weekly the former underpass was dangerous, dirty and too steep for wheelchairs to use. To comply with disability standards, a new overpass or underpass would need gradients that are no more than 1 in 14.

“Any future improvement to pedestrian access would need to solve these challenges and overcome significant space constraints at either side of the tracks,” she said. Under the new penalties announced on Friday, fines for drivers and cyclists crossing while boom gates are down have more than doubled from $295 to $607, with the maximum court penalty rocketing from $1467 to $3033.

Ms Allan said doubling the fines would make people think twice about dangerously sneaking across the tracks. “People just need to stop taking chances so they don’t hurt or kill themselves – and potentially traumatise train drivers – just to save a few minutes,” she said.
Dust levels fall, but not enough Victoria’s most polluted suburb has recorded its lowest level of dust since recording started in 2009 – but it was still more than three times the limit deemed dangerous by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Last financial year, Brooklyn residents suffered 17 days of dust levels as high as those experienced during the Black Saturday bushfires, compared with 29 the previous year. WHO warns that people should not be exposed to such levels of particle pollution more than five days a year. Last month, work started on a $2.6 million state government and Brimbank council project to seal Jones and Bunting roads, which collectively produce more than 30 per cent of the precinct’s dust emissions. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said that while dust levels still exceeded the national standard of air quality, the reduction was a promising sign. “I’m hopeful that the sealing of Jones and Bunting roads will have a positive impact on air quality.” Brooklyn Residents Action Group secretary Bert Boere said the dust reduction was a step in the right direction. “My concern would be to understand why, and if it’s going to be a permanent thing,” he said. No fare, so no school today By Ben Cameron and Benjamin Millar Victoria University is backing free public transport for students after finding significant numbers of young people skip school because they can’t afford myki payments or fines. The finding emerged from a joint Vic UniSunshine Youth Legal Centre project seeking solutions to both fare evasion and the financial burden of fines. The Young People and Fines Bulk Negotiation Project surveyed about 140 clients as well as teachers and youth workers. VU Law and Justice College clinical
programs director Su Robertson said about 160 clients had needed help in the past year with fine issues of some sort. “Not all [are] public transport, but most are,” she said. In one case, a student from the west was promised a fine waiver by a ticket inspector once he presented his concession card, which he’d left at home, at a later date. “The young person did as instructed, but the fine was not waived and they paid up,” Ms Robertson said. infringement notices and on-the-spot penalty fares have been issued in the past 11 months, up 13 per cent from 149,969 in 2011-12. Ms Robertson said providing free public transport for students could be one solution as “hitting kids’ pockets doesn’t work”. “They don’t have a hip pocket to hit,” she said.
Public transport was a necessity and some students from poor backgrounds faced violence at home if they failed to attend school, she claimed. “It’s not a luxury for a kid to get to school,” Ms Robertson said. “If they don’t have enough money on their myki, it’s not an issue of fare evasion. They shouldn’t have to weigh up whether to risk a fine or risk getting in trouble for not going to school. “Free public transport to and from school may be a good start, but we’re also hoping to uncover other creative responses to go with this idea.”

Coaches trained by English soccer giant Arsenal visited Altona City last week to help develop young players’ technical skills and passion for the game. Altona City players aged from seven to 11 went through a five-day school holiday training program. Altona City president Joe Tanti said Arsenal, nicknamed the Gunners, approached his club and the two were now aligned. “They approached our director of coaching, Rocco Giovanniello, to see if they could come and coach the kids,” he said. “The coaching was very different to what we’re used to. Cops kick more goals Footscray police showed plenty of heart but failed to topple their young opponents in the Recwest soccer tournament. Acting Senior Sergeant Amma Bridgeman, from the Westgate proactive unit, said last Wednesday’s round-robin competition in Braybrook as part of Operation Kicking Goals was a great opportunity to engage with young people in an open, fun and simple way. “A lot of people in the community, especially the young ones, only come in contact with police when something has gone wrong and we want to change that,” she said. “We want to teach young people that police aren’t the bad guys and that we’re always there
if they need help. That’s where events like this are really helpful.” Inspector Tony Long said the police team, the Footscray Maulers, gave their all but failed to make the finals of the round-robin event. “It just goes to show a group of eager competitors are no match for groups of young people who have been playing soccer together as teams right across the season,” he said. “The young people and the police members present spent plenty of time talking and getting to know each other, which should have a positive [outcome] down the track.” Benjamin Millar

Evacuation drill planned By Goya Dmytryshchak Residents lobbying against high-rise development on the Port Phillip Woollen Mill site launched a Williamstown safety committee on Monday and will prepare for an emergency evacuation drill in November. The historic 1887 Nugget boot polish factory was bulldozed last week as a development housing up to 2000 people proceeds. Residents are awaiting a state government review of residential development near major hazard facilities (MHFs), such as Mobil’s Point Gellibrand tank farm, which is opposite the mill site. Save Williamstown spokesman Godfrey Moase said there were no clear planning guidelines on residential development near MHFs. “There’s more than three dozen MHFs listed across the state, with Hobsons Bay having the highest concentration,” he said. “Given WorkSafe is on the record as having concerns, Mobil is on the record as having concerns; we need to do something to change the rules. “So we’re going to do that – given that there are no clear rules at this stage – by taking safety into our own hands,” Mr Moase said. “We are going to be building towards an evacuation drill on the peninsula of Williamstown in late November to test our safety and readiness.” Sea captain Bill Korevaar, who has more than 30 years’ experience, mainly in gas and oil shipping emergency response, said the Australian Maritime Safety Authority had responsibility for the safety of shipping in port waters and WorkSafe had responsibility for Victorian workplaces, but there was no responsible body to enforce standards and

An application has been lodged in the Supreme Court to modify a covenant on a landmark Altona house so six dwellings can be built on the site. The two-storey clinker brick house on two blocks in Maidstone Street was sold recently for more than $1 million. An application has been lodged to modify a covenant which prohibits more than one dwelling on each lot. Graham Griffiths jnr said his father built the house from a design in an American Cape Cod designs book. “It was built in 1956 from Glen Iris ‘Coronation’ clinker bricks – Coronation as they were stamped with a crown for Queen Elizabeth’s wedding,” he said. “Maidstone Street wasn’t properly constructed then, no gutters or footpaths. “We lived in it from 1956 to 1973. Then it was sold after my parents split up. “The highest bid was $18,000 and mum said I could have it for $9000 to pay off dad. Drug grower’s jail term stands By Goya Dmytryshchak A man has lost a bid to cut his prison sentence for cultivating more than 200 kilograms of cannabis. Sean Robert McGrath was sentenced to two years and six months’ jail for cultivating 175 cannabis plants at factories in Laverton and Williamstown North and at his Spotswood home between August, 2012, and March, 2013. He applied to the Supreme Court to reduce his jail term for the cultivation charge, arguing the
sentencing judge had erred in failing to consider a community correction order. McGrath had pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis at two adjoining factories in Laverton with a number of grow rooms and a sophisticated hydroponic set-up using bypassed electricity. He told police he had been working at the Laverton factories for a couple of months and was paid about $200 a day. Police seized 131 cannabis plants weighing 198 kilograms from the premises. McGrath’s Spotswood home was then searched. Police found two bags of cannabis
weighing 485 grams, eight seedlings, a hydroponic set-up and an electricity bypass. Police then searched a Williamstown North factory leased by McGrath. It contained a grow building with three rooms. Police found 36 cannabis plants weighing 13 kilograms. Two of McGrath’s co-offenders received suspended sentences, while a third was sentenced to a minimum of eight months. Supreme Court president Chris Maxwell and justices Robert Redlich and John Kyrou said McGrath’s offending had been properly characterised as serious.
“The maximum penalty for cultivating a commercial quantity of cannabis is 25 years’ imprisonment,” they stated in their ruling. “As already noted, the quantity the subject of this cultivation charge is 8.5 times the specified commercial quantity. “Defence counsel conceded on the plea that the Laverton enterprise was a relatively serious example of this type of offence and that the applicant’s role at the Williamstown premises was important.” They refused to grant leave of appeal.
Knit while you wait Knitting baskets with unfinished scarves in them are popping up around Hobsons Bay in a campaign to raise awareness of youth homelessness. The idea is for someone to knit while waiting at a laundrette, hairdresser, medical centre or other business and then leave the scarf in the basket for the next person to continue. Altona-based homelessness service Latitude: Directions for Young People said the idea was developed in partnership with Altona Village Traders Association and the Altona Country Women’s Association. Latitude manager Rhonda Collins said the knitting basket was a symbol. “It’s bringing people together,” she said. “It’s creating that social inclusion.” She said there were 146 on the youth homelessness priority waiting list across Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley and Wyndham.
Ms Collins said many people were unaware of Latitude’s work. “A lot of people don’t know what we do,” she said. “Homelessness doesn’t mean you’re sleeping in the park all the time. “It’s about raising that awareness of couch-surfing and people who might be on the cusp of leaving home to get in contact with us before that happens.” Latitude, at 2 Somers Parade, Altona, has a drop-in pantry and is always seeking donations of food that’s easy to prepare. Footscray police have paired up with children at Dinjerra Primary School for some old-fashioned letter writing. Grades 4, 5 and 6 pupils at the Braybrook school have been swapping letters with police throughout this year as part of an Ardoch Youth Foundation program. The “literacy buddies” met last week when police visited the school – the police cars and sirens proving a real hit. The pupils will visit their police buddies at Footscray police station later in the year. Inspector Tony Long said the program was in its second year after enjoying strong success in 2014. “A really high proportion of the kids are from
refugee or migrant backgrounds; there’s a very wide range of nationalities,” he said. “A lot of these kids come from backgrounds where police are seen as people you don’t trust.” He said the pupils and police loved the pen pal project and teachers thought it was great because it also helped improve literacy. “They ask questions and we respond and ask them questions, too,” Inspector Long said. “If they ever do need the police, or see us in the streets, instead of being scared they can feel confident. Do you have a food phobia, or is there a food you simply refuse to eat? Perhaps you had a nasty experience as a child. I know I did. Which is why a raspberry – in any shape or form – will never pass my lips (think car-sick kid on long road trip, throwing up red cordial nearly all the way from Melbourne to Sydney!) But I’m certainly not alone. A friend of mine has a real aversion to lychees, which can be traced back to her primary school days. “A grade four teacher made us all eat a tinned one. They were revolting and to this day, the mere sight of them makes me want to vomit,” she says.
FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? MS: Intermediate – not bad at following recipes, but that’s about it.
Another friend insists she cannot stand to be in the same room as a banana, but can’t think of any specific reason why.
FB: What is your signature dish? MS: Curries in the slow cooker are always a winner. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? MS: Not much of a dessert man, so I’d probably just have a few mains – lamb korma, steak (pepper sauce), creamy pasta (must have avocado), and a lamb kebab for the walk home.
My workmate Gill would rather walk over broken glass than eat cod. “Mum would boil it. The smell was horrendous. And I remember the saucepan afterwards would have this orange tinge.”
FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? MS: Jamie Oliver is a bit of a gun, so any of his shows. 30 Minute Meals is handy for some quick meal ideas.
Then there is the former Wyndham councillor who simply cannot eat fish fingers, a phobia he says goes back 34 years. “I tried to eat too many, too fast, and the rest is history.”
FB: What is your favourite food? MS: Very hard to pick. Definitely meat of some sort. Let’s go with a lamb doner kebab.

MS: Miranda Kerr (she’s allowed to bring 10 Victoria’s Secret friends), Stephen K Amos, Ned Kelly, Martin Luther King Jr and Rob Gronkowski. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? MS: The first time someone asks you to wash up, do a horrendous job and hope they never ask again.

SPORT Western Jets match it with cup leader goal as the margin ballooned out to 41 points. Although a victory was out of reach, the Jets fought out the match, winning the final quarter by 12 points. Western Jets coach Torin Baker was rapt with his side’s effort. “In terms of the way we matched them in that first half, I thought our performance was really good,” Baker said. He said the third quarter was where the game was won. “It probably started with their clearance dominance,” he said. “Our kicking efficiency dropped off a little bit, as well. “Apart from that we really matched them for the entire game. “Considering they are sitting on top of the ladder, it is great to see those improvements in our game.” Lachlan Knight continued his impressive form for the Jets. The defender has been named among his side’s best players in the past two matches.
“Lachlan has been outstanding for us,” Baker said. “We have played him more off the half backline in the last couple of weeks … he is in great form at the moment. His ability to rebound and intercept mark as well as play really tight footy on his opponent has been excellent.” Knight was well supported by Jaycob Hickey and Mitchell Norton. Up forward for the Jets, Brandon Coletta, Mark Galea and Oscar Junker were among the goal scorers. Saturday’s result leaves the Jets in a battle with the Bendigo Pioneers for the TAC Cup wooden spoon. The two sides are equal on points with the Jets holding the advantage on percentage. Vikings stir things up By Lance Jenkinson The finals race was all shook up in a dramatic three hours in the Western Region Football League division 1 on Saturday. Altona threw its hat back into the ring with a 46-point win over fifth-placed St Albans at Grant Reserve. The Vikings not only drew level on points with the Saints, but have a shot at taking their spot in the top five when they face Port Melbourne Colts away on Saturday, while the Saints twiddle their thumbs with a bye. Vikings playing coach Josh Russo told Star Weekly the manner of the victory was a signal of intent from his team. “It was really pleasing to beat one of those sides that have been above us,” he said. “It gave us an opportunity to claw back some points. “We don’t want to make up the numbers . . . we want to be up to our necks and the way we can do that from now on is win games.” For three quarters of the game, it was a real arm wrestle. The Vikings had their noses in front by eight points at three-quarter time but the Saints had been wasteful and were very much in the contest. It was going to take something special for one of the sides to break away, and the Vikings produced one of their best quarters of the season to bang in eight goals to one. “I thought we played really well after quarter-time,” Russo said. “We weren’t playing good footy early but we really fought back and started to dominant possession and play. “It wasn’t an easy day for footy but I thought our leaders stepped up and helped us prevail.” One of those leaders was Jayden Post, who proved the difference between the sides with eight goals. He was the beneficiary of the hard work of midfielders Jordan Robbins, Travis Lunardi and Trent Rafferty, who, in turn, had ruckman Josh Rafferty feeding them first use of the ball at the stoppages. “Eight goals is awesome to see in the paper but there was a lot of lead-up work that resulted in those eight goals,” Russo said. “It is reflective of him converting his opportunities.” Post, a former Richmond-listed player, had an extended break from the game last season and played only four matches. The 25-year-old came back refreshed this season but took some time to re-capture his best football. He seems to be at the peak of his performance now and that is bad news for opposition teams. “He’s certainly been brewing for a couple of weeks,” Russo said. “He’s played a key role

The Western Jets almost pulled off one of the great upsets of the TAC Cup season against the North Ballarat Rebels on Saturday. The Jets pushed the ladder-leading Rebels for three quarters before coming up 29 points short in a 10.15 (75) - 6.10 (46) loss. Despite the tough road trip to Ballarat’s Eureka Stadium, the Jets didn’t look out of place. The Jets made the most of their chances inside the attacking 50, booting two goals straight in the opening quarter to go in level-pegging at the first break. The Rebels were left to rue a poor kicking display inside their own forward 50, with just one of seven shots on goal converted. The Jets continued to hang tough in the second term. But like good sides do, North Ballarat was eventually able to find some of its best football. Fearons restore some pride By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown took a giant leap towards the finals on a momentous weekend in Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league. The Fearons also restored some pride against local rival Footscray in a 9-5 win at Fearon Reserve on Saturday. With five teams separated by one game at the top of a tight ladder, the Fearons leap-frogged Footscray and Surrey Park into first place. The Fearons started the round in third and by the end of the weekend were in pole position. They are the fourth team to occupy top spot in the first 12 rounds of the season. That’s an indication of how close the premiership race will be this season, according to Fearons coach Damien Orr. “We lost to Eltham last week and now we’re on top of the ladder,” he said. “Yeah – I think this year anyone can win it.” Williamstown was desperate for payback against Footscray, which embarrassed them back in round six. On that bleak day, the Fearons suffered a humiliating 17-6 loss, one of their greatest losses of the modern era. “They thumped us last time,” Orr said. “One of the biggest defeats in Williamstown’s living memory, since the 1960s. It was a good turnaround.” The Williamstown-Footscray rivalry has heated up in recent seasons. Orr remembers the listless battles between the two sides from his playing days. “When I was a player at Williamstown, it [beating Footscray] meant very little,” he said. “I’ve been away overseas for a long time, coaching, and Footscray have really improved in that time. I think for the players it means a bit more now – it’s become a rivalry.

Seagulls soar above Bombers By Lance Jenkinson How do you nullify Williamstown’s forward line? Which player do you assign your top key defender or best defensive small to at the beginning of a match? These are a couple of the questions that must have rankled opposition coaches in the Victorian Football League this season. The Seagulls are ranked number one in the competition for scoring without a true focal point. When you stop one forward, another bobs up. The multi-dimensional forward set-up claimed another victim on Saturday, when the Seagulls marched to a 44-point win over a red-hot Essendon at Burbank Oval. The Seagulls had 11 individual goal kickers, ranging from talls to smalls, keys to crumbers and even the odd goal from midfielders thrown into the mix. Sam Dunell, the Seagulls’ leading goalkicker with 22 for the season, led the way with three. The really tall, Nick Meese and Sean Tighe, the tall, Ben Casley and Scott Clouston, the mid-sized, Brett Bewley, and the small, Anthony Anastasio and Andrew Gallucci, kicked two apiece to demonstrate the variety of attacking options the team has at its disposal. Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon told Star Weekly the unpredictability of the forward line had become an asset. “It’s an advantage for us,” he said. “We’re not going to rely on one guy to kick 60 goals for the year; we’re going to have a really big spread. “If someone does have a bad day, and if someone is well held by the opposition, we have a few guys who can step up.” Where the match was won and lost, though, was in the midfield.
Winter tour tests cyclists mettle Footscray Cycling Club’s 11th Winter Road Season was held at the very hilly and difficult SheOaks circuit in the Brisbane Ranges on July 4. Riders departed a rain-soaked Melbourne and, to their surprise, turned up to find a perfectly dry circuit ready for the brave few who made the trip. Veteran Miles DaCosta took out a tortuous A-grade race. The small field fragmented as riders completed four 20-kilometre circuits out of Steiglitz. DaCosta showed the field a clean pair of heels, after Andrew Bonello punctured. Bonello and Dean MacLennan rounded out the podium. In B-grade, Michael Dam exacted a bit of revenge on the SheOaks circuit, taking a win on the same patch of road where he crashed out in round five. Dam picked Mark Micallef’s wheel in the sprint, jumping hard and holding off a fast-finishing Vlad Djuric for second and the fading Micallef for third. In C-grade, 16-year-old Ben Kirkham signalled his talent by taking the win in dominating fashion. The Williamstown High student broke away on the second climb out of Steiglitz, and was never spotted again by the bunch. Kirkham finished a few minutes ahead of William Hamilton and Phil Tehan, in second and third respectively. In D-grade, Peter Burke took a win over Steve Biggs in what was a depleted field.
