On Wednesday, 28th May a drop-in session was held for traders to discuss the previous scope of works along the Pier Street, Altona Beach Precinct. The forum was well attended and gave traders an opportunity to raise concerns, considerations and ideas. The forum is part of an ongoing consultation process with local traders which will be used to determine the scope of future works. The next stage of works, along Pier Street between Blyth and Queen Streets, will commence only once the review has been undertaken.
Despite a cold Saturday morning, residents turned out for Sustainability Victoria’s Detox your Home event in Altona on Saturday, 31st May. Brake fluid, detergents, cleaning products and herbicides were common items bought along for recycling. It was good to see so many residents get behind this environmental initiative.
Strand Ward Willy Lit Fest For the eleventh year in a row, some of Australia’s finest authors shared their anecdotes and experiences at the Willy Lit Fest. This year there were over 80 authors and 50 events, some highlights being the fantastic Men of Memoirs 2 panel, students from Bayside College debating the merits of amalgamation, and Shaun Micallef talking about his new book with Francis Greenslade. One family drove all the way from Newcastle for that one. None of this would have been possible were it not for the hard work of the volunteers who did a sterling job both before the event and on the day. The festival also drew good coverage in the metropolitan press.
Wetlands Ward Laverton Hub The hub has had a busy few weeks with a number of community groups and schools making use of the facility. The Council hosted a disability forum on 29th April, while the mobile Talking Difference Studio, currently at Williamstown Library, was at the hub for several weeks with a successful workshop taking place with students from Laverton College. The main corridor is now looking extremely smart with a display of artwork courtesy of the Hobsons Bay Arts Society, and we are inviting Expressions of Interest from not-forprofit social enterprises to operate a cafe at the hub. Off-leash dog trial Remember you have until the end of June to provide us with feedback on the dog off-leash trial in Lynch Road Reserve, Brooklyn. We’ve received some good input so far but more is always welcome. The success of this trial will determine whether Lynch Road Reserve is set aside as a permanent off-leash area or if we look to other options. Whatever the case, the Council’s committed to ensuring residents in Brooklyn have somewhere for their dogs to run around.

D McLean Reserve Last month we said construction of the new amenities block would begin soon. The good news is it began last week. Expected completion date is still, weather-permitting, end of July. Newport Folk Festival Here’s one for your diaries: set to take to the streets, or rather venues, of Newport from Friday, 4th to Sunday, 6th July is the seventh annual Newport Folk Festival. The program this year includes a youth film festival, dancing demonstrations, and workshops featuring ukulele, guitar, yodelling and gypsy. Check out the detailed program at www.nffc.org.au
Giffard and Osborne Street works You have probably noticed the roadworks lining the eastern end of the Botanic Gardens in Williamstown. The good news is the footpath along Giffard Street is complete and the drainage is almost finished. Next up is the bluestone kerb and channel and then finally the asphalt footpath in Osborne Street. Everything should be completed weather-permitting by the second half of June. Roadworks will also begin soon in Douglas Parade. Starting in mid-June, we’ll be rehabilitating the road between Braw Street and John Street. All things considered, we are hoping the works will take between three to four months.

Altona Meadows • Laverton • Seabrook Point Cook Road footpath You may have noticed work commencing on a new footpath along Point Cook Road between Central Avenue and Seabrook Boulevard. Work on the 2.5 metre footpath began last week and should be finished by the end of this week. Bruce Comben Reserve If you’ve been past Bruce Comben Reserve recently, you’ll see that works on the car park upgrade are progressing well. Drainage and concreting have now been completed and we’ll be doing the asphalting, fencing and landscaping over the coming weeks with work expected to finish, weather-permitting, by the end of June.
Tree planting Our 2014 street tree planting program has now begun. Over the next few months we’ll be planting 1,400 street trees, many of them natives. Things began in earnest on Sunday with 20 volunteers planting 280 tube stocks at the back of people’s houses along Skeleton Creek. It was a great effort from all involved, most of whom were either from the Friends of Skeleton Creek or Dera Sacha Sauda Australia. The Friends of Laverton Creek also had a planting day a couple of weeks ago where more than 250 tube stock were planted in McCormack Park along Laverton Creek.

Little progress on Brooklyn air Victoria’s most-polluted suburb is on track to having a record number of days with dust levels as high as the Black Saturday bushfires. Brooklyn had 13 days across January and February when air quality was below the accepted norm. The national standard is no more than five days a year when dust is above the accepted threshold. A May meeting of the Brooklyn Community Reference Group heard there had been 26 days of unacceptable dust levels since July. The Environment Protection Authority has been conducting “social research” which found residents disagreed on whether action taken to address dust levels had had any effect. Residents felt that issuing pollution abatement notices (PANs) to dirty businesses did not help, according to the research. Williamstown Labor MP Wade Noonan said that six new PANs had been issued in the last quarter. Three more businesses were likely to face enforcement, such as a financial penalties. “The latest EPA air quality results reveal that no real progress has been made in reducing dust in the Brooklyn area over the past 12 months,” he said. “The situation seems to be getting worse. I think [the EPA is] on track this year to record one of their highest dust years since they’ve been recording – since 2009.” Social research feedback, collected through a random sample within Brooklyn, found:
• Respondents disagreed the EPA’s action plan to address dust had helped improve the local environment; • People agreed that directing funds from prosecuted companies to local environmental projects had helped improve the local environment; • 60 per cent of Brooklyn residents living less than 500 metres from a known pollution source did not feel the odour in their area had improved in the past year; and • Half the respondents felt EPA activities had helped improve the local environment.

EPA metro manager Richard Marks said there were 34 active pollution abatement notices in the area, many of which required large-scale remedial works. Twenty-three had been served since July 1, 2013. “Many of our notices require big investment in long-term measures that will be most effective but will take time,” Mr Marks said. “Dry and windy weather is often associated with poor air quality in Brooklyn. “On such days, EPA calls on industry to take additional measures to stop dust being raised from their sites, and local councils and road authorities are also notified so that they can arrange for road cleaning.’’
