By Tate Papworth A senior MP has labelled the Sunshine landfill toxic gas revelation as a “time bomb” and called for a judicial inquiry. In February, Star Weekly revealed a number of residents on Denton Avenue, Toora Court and Karen Place, St Albans were living on top of buried waste and being exposed to methane gas. Western metropolitan region MP Bernie Finn said it was an “appalling situation” and demanded answers. “I’m absolutely flabbergasted that the council was aware of this for quite some time and didn’t tell anyone,” Mr Finn said.

“The biggest outlay most people will make during their lives is buying a home and to find out it’s built on what is possibly a time bomb is appalling.” Mr Finn said a thorough investigation was needed. “These people purchased this land in good faith … the council and state government have known about the site for years and said nothing. “This stinks of a cover-up. We need an independent judicial inquiry to determine exactly who knew what and how this was allowed to happen. “I have to ask if former Brimbank mayor and current St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman knew about this and if so, for how long?“

Ms Suleyman told Star Weekly she was first made aware of the issue in December 2019. “Late last year I received written correspondence from Brimbank council regarding the former Sunshine landfill,” Ms Suleyman said. “I have had a briefing from the EPA on this site earlier this year and have been advised that this site is safe for residents. “I know this is really stressful for affected residents. My priority is to ensure my community has the appropriate support and information through the Brimbank council and EPA through this process.” A number of residents are now considering their legal options.

Law firm Slater and Gordon is expected to hold a “town hall-style” meeting this week to answer questions from residents and discuss their legal options. Brimbank council insists health risks are low. Documents reveal that elevated levels of methane and carbon dioxide recorded around properties could have exposed residents to a “high risk of explosion”. Airport noise could be reduced By Tate Papworth Keilor residents say moving Melbourne airport’s proposed third runway by 600 metres would reduce noise concerns. The Keilor Residents and Ratepayers Association commissioned an acoustics company to undertake monitoring for a two-week period from December 19 to January 1, following the airport’s announcement that its proposed third runway would be of north-south alignment. Association spokeswoman Susan Jennison said the results vindicated calls for a rethink. “There is a great deal more detailed figures and graphs from this study, but our organisation has promoted an idea that if a third runway

goes ahead and is a north-south direction, then it could be placed 600 metres further north. “That will result in the shifting of the noise profile.” She said the outcomes of the study showed noise levels being a lot higher than those presented in the last [airport] master plan. “For the existing north-south runway the … highest reading was 89 decibels. No wonder residents in Keilor Park and Keilor have asked for more noise monitoring units in our area.” Ms Jennison said the introduction of a second north-south runway would cause significant

headaches. “Noise levels will be excessive under the third runway, causing more than 170 residents to come under the Melbourne Airport Environmental Overlay, which states there should be no residential property, no schools in such zones. “There will be a plus 20 decibel increase for residents and students. “There is of course other options for residents in the region to have some respite from all of the noise, at night at least, and have a curfew such as at Sydney, Adelaide, Gold Coast or Essendon [airports].”

A 72-year-old patient undergoing surgery at Sunshine Hospital was in a critical condition after she suffered burns when a fi re broke out in the operating room. The patient was treated immediately at Sunshine Hospital when the fi re broke out about 9.20am on March 2. She was later transferred to a specialist burns unit at the Alfred Hospital where she was in a critical, but stable condition. In a statement, Western Health chief medical officer Dr Paul Eleft heriou described the incident as a tragedy. “In a tragic incident, a patient has been injured at Sunshine Hospital this morning,” he said. “Our thoughts are with the patient and their family. Western Health is offering support to the family.” He said Metropolitan Fire Brigade members and hospital staff were able to contain the fi re. The incident comes while the hospital is in the midst of a $34 million upgrade of its emergency department. The hospital’s emergency department is one of the busiest in the state, treating more than 65,000 patients a year. The upgrade is a much-needed boost for the hospital, which was recently ranked as one of the worst in the country for emergency wait times. An urgent investigation is being conducted to identify the cause of the fi re. Support is also being offered to staff involved in the incident.

Detectives are investigating a serious assault which occurred in Sunshine in January. Investigators have been told a 33-year-old Wyndham Vale man prevented an argument from escalating between his friend and a group of males on City Place about 6.55am on January 5. When his friend left, the Wyndham Vale man returned to his car which was parked nearby. The group followed and harassed the victim before a fight ensued. The victim was punched and kicked to the ground and rendered unconscious. The offenders fled the scene. The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Mosque opens its doors The Sunshine Mosque is opening its doors to the wider community. The annual open day coincides with the one year anniversary of the Christchurch massacre. Sunshine Mosque secretary of committee Mehmet Talat said it’s a day for the wider community to see inside the Turkish Cypriot Islamic community. “The mosque was completed in early 2005, but the community has been here since the late 1970s,” Mr Talat said. “It serves the whole community in the area … we provide different prayer services, youth services and community services like hosting festivals.” Mr Talat said he hopes the day serves as a way of eliminating a number of misconceptions

Walking with purpose By Tate Papworth With the memory of her brave husband front of mind, Deer Park woman Nicole Fyfe is putting on her runners and walking with purpose. Ms Fyfe’s husband died from bowel cancer in January after a two-year battle with the disease. His determination and spirit in the face of tremendous adversity inspired Ms Fyfe to continue his legacy. “My husband kept getting really bad stomach pains and reflux, but he was only 37, so doctors kept telling us it was reflux issues,” Ms Fyfe said.

“The pain got so bad that we went to the hospital and they did a full scan … he was in surgery the next day. It was a whirlwind. “He was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer, but you wouldn’t have known; he’d be working immediately after his chemo, he’d even go straight from chemo to umpiring our children’s sporting events.” She said not even the worst possible news seemed to stop him. “He stopped chemo when we were told it wasn’t working any more, but near the end he told the nurse he was determined to play one last game of cricket,” Ms Fyfe said. “So he discharged himself from the hospital and was on the park that afternoon.” Now Ms Fyfe is determined to continue that legacy. Councils unite over soil

By Tate Papworth Residents of Denton Avenue say years of silence, followed by the drip feeding of information, has only raised concerns about what lies beneath their homes. Jannet Batty and her partner purchased their property 39 years ago and say they had no idea what they’d purchased on top of. “We knew there was a tip in Hulett street, but that was all we knew of it,” Jannet said. “Then one day in about 2011 or 2012 we got a knock on the door from a man who asked if could test soil in the backyard and some places inside the house. “He didn’t tell us what they were testing for, but proceeded to test under the sinks and stove before leaving.” She said what followed was eight years of silence until the same man knocked on the door three weeks ago and said their home of nearly four decades stood on the site of the former Sunshine landfills and methane gas had been detected at the property. “He asked how I felt and I told him they were 39 years too late telling me. “They found methane gas in our house, but never gave us any report or told us. “They said the methane gas levels are going down, but how do they know, they’ve never come back and tested the house.” Fearing her family had been exposed to dangerous levels of the toxic gas, Jannet’s daughter Brooke asked if prolonged exposure could have detrimental health impacts. “The response was, that if the readings were that bad then the house would’ve exploded or we would’ve suffocated,” Brooke said. “Basically they said because we lived and the house is still standing, it’s all good. “But if it can suffocate you, surely it can cause

other health issues.” It’s more information than fellow resident Jenny Seda said she received. “I’m 33, I’ve lived in this house my whole life,” Ms Seda said. “It was originally my parents, but they’ve since passed away. “The house was left to me, but mum had a caveat on it, so while I have power of attorney, I don’t have my name on the title.” It meant that Ms Seda was left with next to no information and a lot of questions.

“I had absolutely no idea about any of this until two guys knocked on the door the other week,” she said. “They were here for all of two minutes and wouldn’t give me any information because my name isn’t on the title. “They left me with nothing and they didn’t answer my questions … they just kept saying that there’s nothing to worry about and it’s safe. “Low risk doesn’t mean no risk and, further to that, I’m sure the risks were much higher going back 30 years.”

Brimbank and Melton councils have told the state government to look away from the west when it comes to finding a place to store contaminated soil from the West Gate Tunnel Project. In a joint letter, the councils have sought a commitment from the state government and West Gate Tunnel contractors to seek other locations, and alternative waste treatment options, away from Melbourne’s west. Chief concern for the council is that contaminated soil may end up at the Ravenhall tip, which is located within the boundaries of the Melton council, with major road and transport access from metropolitan Melbourne via Brimbank. “The expansion of the Metropolitan Regional Landfill, combined with the potential for West Gate Tunnel spoil to be potentially transported there, would see a dramatic increase in waste vehicles travelling across Brimbank and Melton, impacting our cities and the wider west for years to come,” Cr Papafotiou said. “Communities in the west have already received an unfair burden of landfill and contaminated waste. “Current contamination issues for some properties abutting Sunshine landfills is an example of how past waste disposal decisions can impact future residents and businesses. “We’ve borne the brunt of past poor practices and will continue to deal with these legacy issues for years to come.” Tate Papworth

Brimbank councillor Lucinda Congreve has resigned, a week after the Sunshine landfill issue became public. The former mayor’s resignation, which is effective immediately, comes just months out from local government elections. Ms Congreve said her decision was made in order to better balance her obligations as a mum with young children and her full-time work. Ms Congreve said it was a difficult decision, but family comes first. “It’s been a difficult decision to resign from council but since returning to work full-time this January I have found balancing my family responsibilities with my council duties increasingly challenging,” she said. “‘I’m sad about my decision to resign but my kids are young and they need their mum and I need them. I also need to meet my obligations as an employee – a balancing act, I know many families in Brimbank will understand,” she said. Ms Congreve said she looks back at her time in office fondly. “My original motivation for standing was to represent and advocate for additional services and support for families, to make sure that we were supporting families to thrive and I’m proud of my work in delivering additional supports, such as more lactation consultants, accelerated parks and playground programs and, as the mayor, advocating for Brimbank at the highest levels of both state and federal

Coronavirus: GPS left in the dark By Goya Dmytryshchak A leading doctor says GPs are not equipped to deal with a potential outbreak of coronavirus and is calling for “sentinel practices” to be established. It comes as Australia last week had its first death among confirmed cases of COVID-19, with more than 60 countries impacted and a new travel ban imposed on foreign nationals travelling from Iran to Australia. Altona North GP Mukesh Haikerwal said aside from some masks from the federal government, doctors had received little support for dealing with patients presenting with symptoms of the disease. “We’re not going to face the bullet without a bulletproof vest,” said the former Australian Medical Association president and World Medical Association council chair. “We feel quite unsupported in general practice land. “Everybody is telling us to receive patients, screen patients … and so on, but there’s been precious-little support. “No advice about what to do if we received a case and about cleaning the practice up after the case has been through – and you’ve got to keep the room empty – and a lack of understanding that if you shut down a couple of rooms you can decimate a practice. “I’d probably end up sending people to casualty rather than keeping them in your practice because you couldn’t afford not to run your practice.” A worker at a major Melbourne hospital said a lot of GPs did not want to take in suspected coronavirus patients and told patients to go to the emergency department, while the hospital was directing people to call the dedicated hotline on 1800 675 398.

Dr Haikerwal said clear messaging and material support for doctors was needed. “We want more concerted action so that we are not just saying nice things but actually are prepared if the worst does happen,” he said. “We need to be actively working through the scenario that this is upon us. “It may mean that certain practices are set up as what we call ‘sentinel practices’, that are geared up and prepared with gear and people and training so that they can take the load off the rest of the practices. “Even in hospitals, you wouldn’t just go to an emergency department in hospital; even in hospitals there need to be sentinel areas like that.”

Brimbank’s newest flagship park has officially opened. The $3.34 million upgrade of The Lakes Reserve was completed in February and officially opened to the public last week. Mayor Georgina Papafotiou opened the park during a council-hosted celebration. “The Lakes Reserve has been transformed into a vibrant, green space for people to relax, play and enjoy more activities,” Cr Papafotiou said. “The $3.34 million transformation has added a fantastic new activity and leisure area, barbecues, half basketball court, fitness station and much more. “There’s also an upgraded playground with new equipment, shelter and barbeque facilities. Set in scenic parkland alongside the beautiful

lake area, The Lakes Reserve has something for everyone.” A two-kilometre shared user path from Sunshine Avenue to Kings Road, additional open space for picnics and improved safety features have also been added as part of the upgrades. Work on the project began in May, but in November the park was attacked by vandals. A number of mature trees at the reserve were subjected to continued acts of vandalism, forcing the council to spend time removing the damaged trees and cleaning up the area. New director settles in Caroline Chisholm’s new St John’s campus director has crossed from east to west and couldn’t be happier with the decision. Phillip Kamay crossed from Marcellin College in Bulleen at the beginning of the year to take up the role and said it’s been a joy. “I think the thing that’s been most pleasing is how friendly all the staff and students are,” Mr Kamay said. “I had some great friends and relationships at the last place I worked, but honestly, this is as good as it can be after five weeks.” Mr Kamay spent four years at Marcellin College and said he’s already noticed a number of differences in the west. “I think this is a true metropolitan school,” he said. “There’s diversity at the school like

no other I’ve seen … I think there’s about 63 different nationalities represented here.” While he’s spent significant time east, Mr Kamay has a strong link to the west, his mother was born in St Albans and went to St Albans Secondary College. “One thing I’m conscious of is that the needs of some of the students out here are different to those in the east,” he said. “My primary role is to support the team of wellbeing leaders and manage the day-to-day learning and academic needs of the students and staff.” Mr Kamay also has a strong musical background, which the school says will be a major boost to its music program. Sunshine RSL members have voted not to go ahead with a controversial plan to build 30 social housing units on their site. But that doesn’t mean the project has been killed off. Planning Minister Justin Madden pushed through the proposal late last year and building was supposed to start last month.

But for Kealba husband and wife Deb and Hilmi, this sums up their connection to Western Health. “We began volunteering with Western Health more than seven years ago and have been lucky to work in many areas of the hospital in our time,” Hilmi says. “And we’ve made great friends and memories along the way.” Deb adds that what started with a few hours’ helping out has grown to be a regular ongoing commitment. “This feels like our home,” she says.

SPORT Gruesome end for Taylors Lakes Taylors Lakes abruptly exited the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association finals amid a gory scene. The Lions suffered defeat at the hands of a Williamstown side much further along in its development, all the while having to witness a bloodied captain Jarrod Wakeling get treatment on a fractured and dislocated ring finger that saw bone broke through the skin. Another skipper might have abandoned ship, but Wakeling decided to stay on the ground, despite being in obvious pain. Following his injury from backing up a throw in the field, Wakeling went on to bowl more overs, but once the adrenalin died down after stumps, he found himself in a spot of bother. “Last night it was pretty tender,” Wakeling said after spending Saturday night in hospital. “I got it all straightened out and this morning it was cleaned out and fixed up. They took out

some pieces of bone that were floating around in there. “There was a couple of boys at the club that didn’t like blood. It was relatively graphic and a few were a bit squirmish.” The pain of the finger injury was not as bad for Wakeling as the result of the game. Taylors Lakes was handed a finals lesson by Williamstown, beaten by seven wickets in a one-sided game at the Williamstown Cricket Ground. The Lions probably lost the game at the toss of the coin, forced to bat in conditions that were not ideal. Wakeling was not using it as an excuse though, knowing his side’s 83 was nowhere near the mark needed. “We lost the toss and they had the better conditions to bowl on with the pitch being a little bit soft,” he said. “Credit where credit is

due, they bowled exceptionally well and we just probably weren’t quite up to their standard. “Only making 83 against a side like Williamstown is always going to be a tough ask.” Williamstown’s passed the target three down in just 24.4 overs. It was as comprehensive as finals victories go. While they will be hurting now, the Taylors Lakes youngsters will look back on the game as a key reference point in their careers. “They’ve got players that have been there and done it in the past and are still performing well,” Wakeling said. “They’re a professional outfit, they’ve got the experience and going up against a pretty young side, it kind of stacked against us from the get-go, but it’s good learning for us. “Our young guys took a lot out of the game.” Lance Jenkinson

United soars into top six By Lance Jenkinson The complexion of Western United’s inaugural A-League season has changed for the better all of a sudden. Scoring 11 goals in two weeks will do that for you, with massive back-to-back wins elevating United back into the top six. United coach Mark Rudan heard all the detractors following a loss to Wellington Phoenix three weeks ago, but kept his faith in the playing group and trusted that they would come through better for experiencing a rough patch in the season. Thumping wins to open March, a 6-2 home thrashing of Central Coast Mariners on the first day of the month, followed by 5-1 hammering of Adelaide United away on Saturday night, has turned United’s season around. Suddenly, confidence has lifted for United and finals is back on the agenda. “I’m happy because the players executed the game plan to perfection,” Rudan said. “I’ve got a lot of confidence and belief in this group.”

Besart Berisha kick-started the five-goal dream for Western United in the city of churches. United put the game well out of reach of the hosts in the second half with goals to winger Connor Pain, three minutes after the resumption of play, and a second to Berisha, in the 56th minute. Sunshine is hungrier than ever before as it takes aim at a premiership three-peat in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 this weekend. The Crows advanced to their third consecutive grand final with a 148-run battering of St Andrews Pascoe Vale at Demptser Park last Sunday. Crows captain-coach Troy Stone is one of six players aiming to clinch a third straight premiership medal and there’s four others who are yet to taste the ultimate glory. “We’ve got four blokes that haven’t tasted premiership success and they’re pretty keen to have that feeling,” he said. “There’s also six guys going for their third and that doesn’t change anything because you always want to win.” Stone was the spark for Sunshine with 113 in his side’s 216 off 74 overs. It was the continuation of a wonderful season with the bat for Stone, which has included three centuries and four half centuries. Making a century in a big final was satisfying for Stone, but not as much as leading his team to another grand final. “It’s pretty good to be honest, but the result is the best thing at the moment,” he said. Sunshine’s defence of the large total was never in doubt. It was a nightmare for St Andrews Pascoe Vale, bowled out for 68. Spinner Ruwan Jayaweera took 4-16 off eight overs, taking his season wicket tally to league best 37 wickets. Naveed Hussain was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-9 off 13 overs. Sunshine will meet minor premiers Newport-Digman in a four-day grand final starting on Saturday. In senior division, St Albans caused a huge upset, toppling Doutta Stars by six runs in a thriller at Buckley Park. The Saints were underdogs going in and their chances seemed to weaken even further when they posted 118. St Albans stuck to its guns with the ball and rolled Doutta for just 112. The Eagles moved through to the grand final at the weekend on the back of pitching and defence. â€œThereâ€™s a saying that baseball is a game of failure, if you bat a .300 average, youâ€™re failing seven times out of 10,â€? Eagles coach Stuart Clayton said. â€œSo, if you can play good defence and have solid pitching, youâ€™re a chance, and thatâ€™s the way we play the game. â€œWe hope that if we score two or three runs, thatâ€™s enough to get us the win.â€? Sunshine was at its miserly best in a semi-final series sweep over Geelong Baycats. The Eagles were desperate for payback after the Baycats thrashed them on this stage 12 months earlier. Over 18 innings this time around, the Eagles coughed up one run to the Baycats batters. The Eagles pitchers were sensational and the fielders backed them up throughout the series. Sunshine took game one at the Melbourne Ballpark 2-0. Riley Barr was instrumental, throwing eight innings without a blemish on the scoreboard.
