Class action could flow By Tate Papworth The lawyer responsible for settling the Cranbourne Landfill class action says there are some very similar circumstances to the Sunshine landfill issue. In 2008, Slater and Gordon practice group leader Manisha Blencowe commenced a class action on behalf of hundreds of property owners whose properties had been affected by methane gas coming from a disused landfill in Cranbourne. The action secured a settlement of $23.5M for home owners affected by the gas migrating from the closed landfill site and into a neighbouring housing estate. Last week, Star Weekly revealed more than 80 properties could be impacted by the old Sunshine landfills, with many sitting on buried waste and are exposed to methane gas. Ms Blencowe said residents impacted by the Sunshine landfill issue, particularly those in Denton Avenue, Karen Place and Toora Court near Energy Park, could have similar grounds for a claim. “In the Cranbourne case the residents were successful on the grounds of negligence and nuisance. “Compensation was awarded based on diminished value of the property, among other circumstances,” she said. Ms Blencowe said potential restrictions on the use and development of land on the area would also impact property value and could be grounds for a claim. She also said residents could have grounds for a nuisance claim if significant remediation works are required close to people’s homes. One Denton Avenue resident, who did not wish to be named, told Star Weekly he was considering his legal options. Property values aren’t the only concern for residents. Slater and Gordon senior associate public liability Joseph Catoggio said anyone who contracts a debilitating condition should seek legal advice. “If they have developed a respiratory condition, loss of equilibrium where their balance is affected or severe migraines that affect memory and concentration, these are conditions that would be deemed as significant,” Mr Catoggio said. “A person is more likely to develop a health condition after slow exposure to chemicals. This is more likely to happen as a result of living there or working there every day for a considerable period of time.” While there may be legal options available,

Mr Catoggio warned it may be too soon to act. “It may be too early for health conditions to have emerged in residents living at the site,” he said. “If we believe there are viable public liability claims, it would be because we are guided by government authorities who have undertaken testing showing a major risk. “In order to establish a link between a health

condition and chemicals in the ground below your home or business, you must prove you have a significant injury that is permanent as a result of the exposure.” It may not be the only option for legal recourse. Documents seen by Star Weekly reveal that the council could be liable for clean-up costs

and remediation of the sites. The council could also be liable for a claim of negligence, for failing to amend the Brimbank Planning Scheme since 1999 to disclose the location of the Sunshine landfills to innocent purchasers. ■ More

Hospitals prepared for pandemic By Tate Papworth Western Health, which operates the Sunshine and Footscray hospitals, said it was well advanced in preparations for a possible outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The organisation’s executive director operations Natasha Toohey said a team of staff with decades of experience in infection prevention and the management of infectious diseases has been set up to oversee planning for a potential pandemic of coronavirus. “The team are well advanced in developing

extensive contingency plans for how Western Health would respond to a pandemic,” she said. “Measures are already in place to rapidly identify and isolate patients with suspected COVID-19. “Work is well advanced to address the many components that would need to be in place for a pandemic response, including extensive infection prevention refresher training for our healthcare workers and education on correct transmission based precautions.” It comes as Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced last Thursday that he has initiated

Australia’s coronavirus emergency response plan. “We believe the risk of a global pandemic is very much upon us, and as a result, as a government, we need to take the steps necessary to prepare for such a pandemic,” he said. Mr Morrison said Australian Border Force would draw up plans for extra measures at airports to ensure travellers suspected of having the virus can be quarantined or self-quarantined quickly and effectively. Western Health had not treated any confirmed cases of the virus at the time of

writing. Ms Toohey said the hospital’s ability to manage a high volume of cases is also being assessed. “We are planning for how high volumes of patients could be managed and how this would impact other services we provide. “Visitor access and movement must also be considered. “Monitoring and managing our staff and planning for the impact on staffing levels if community mitigation measures are put in place is another key consideration.”

We were all over in the Philippines as children, and I was the first to come to Australia in 1977 before everyone else eventually followed. “It was great when mum came over to be with the family.” “She’s loved watching all the children and grandchildren grow up, and she’s doing pretty well for 100.” Ms Pruna said her mum had one secret to her

long life, but she was able to break her rule for a bit of celebratory birthday cake recently. “She doesn’t like sweets, always a healthy eater, because she was worried about diabetes which runs in the family, so that’s probably helped her with her longevity,” Ms Pruna said. “She asked me if I paid for the cake, and when I told her it was free she started laughing. Nothing makes mum happier, than something that is free.”

The world has seen plenty of change in the past 100 years, and Burnside’s Rebecca Tolentino has seen it all unfold. Ms Tolentino recently celebrated her 100th birthday, bringing up the milestone surrounded by four generations of her extended family at Arcare Burnside. While Ms Tolentino’s memory is not what it used to be, her daughter Zenaida Pruna said her mother spent most of her life in her native Philippines before immigrating to Australia later in life.

The Keilor Village Medical Centre is the fi rst in the area to partner with Hope Assistance Local Tradies. Hope Assistance Local Tradies (HALT) is a national suicide prevention charity that works to ensure tradies get the support and care they need when they are presenting with mental health difficulties such as stress, grief and loss, depression or anxiety. HALT project worker Tom Keneally said he was thrilled by the partnership. “It’s a real win for the community and will provide a vital link for tradies in getting the care and support they need,” Mr Keneally said. “The practice really understands the needs of tradies and men’s mental health and we know that this partnership will ensure tradies, male and female, get appropriate care for the issues they may be presenting with.” Under the initiative, the Keilor Village Medical Centre will provide GP and psychology consultations specifically to tradies referred to them through HALT. Tradies are invited to contact the clinic for an initial longer GP consultation where the doctor will be able to prepare a holistic care plan based on their individual profi le.

By Tate Papworth A three-year fight to return licence testing to Brimbank has come to an end, largely thanks to the efforts of one man. Sunshine resident Peter Thomson was left bewildered when VicRoads opted to cease licence testing when it relocated to Clark Street in 2017. Mr Thomson was the driving force behind several public protests calling for a licence testing facility within Brimbank. The protracted battle has come to an end with VicRoads agreeing to open a licence testing facility at 1/85 Mt Derrimut Road, Deer Park. “I’m happy for all the local driving schools and those who now don’t have to travel long distances,” Mr Thomson said. “It’s not often you get one up on the state government, so this is a great outcome. The champagne has been on ice for a while now, so I’m looking forward to breaking it out.” The new facility will offer drive tests and computerised licence testing services; including learner permit knowledge and hazard perception testing. “I was always confident we’d get the right result … once I heard about the additional strain not having a facility in Brimbank was putting on neighbouring [VicRoads] offices,” Mr Thomsons said. He thanked those who supported the cause by signing petitions, attending rallies and adding their voice to the cause. “This was a community effort. “The bottom line is that these facilities should never have been taken away to begin with.” Peter Thomson has won his battle for a licence testing hub. Kealba landfill fire continues to burn An underground fire at the Kealba landfill continues to burn, three months after it was first reported. In November, Barro Group, the operator of the landfill, contacted the EPA to report a suspected fire within one of the waste cells. It followed several residents complaining of a “toxic, smokey chemical” smell in the area. Residents are still feeling the ill affects of the fire, with one recently describing it as a “toxic blast” each time he opened his front door. Others say they have been unable to use their air-conditioners on hot days because of the strong odour. An EPA spokesman said drilling during January and February identified two “hotspots” in the landfill. Barro Group is now expected to present the EPA with its strategy for remediation of the landfill by the end of February. The spokesman said it’s not yet possible to determine when the fires will be extinguished, but remediation works are expected to start in March 2020. Thus far, the EPA has issued Barro with an official warning for failing to notify it of the incident immediately. It has also issued a clean-up notice requiring ongoing air quality monitoring and publication of the results, as well as actions to keep the community informed. Tate Papworth

More than 30 participants gathered at Brimbank Park for a fun run with a difference earlier this month. At 7pm the group headed off on its first lap – if runners made it back within an hour they ran again at 8pm, if they didn’t make it back within the hour, they were eliminated. The event is one of many fun runs planned for Brimbank Park this year, with the seventh edition of the Brimbank Park Running festival to be held on Sunday, March 22.

A 22-year-old Sydenham motorcyclist fell from his bike while attempting to evade police in Hillside on February 15. Police said the rider, who was not wearing a helmet, performed a mono on the bike while passing a stationary police vehicle. The male rider yelled out to police as he approached Melton Highway and attempted to evade police by riding onto the footpath but lost control of the bike and fell. He was arrested at the scene. Police said the rider had never held a motorcycle licence and tested positive for illicit drugs. His bike was impounded for 30 days.

Four bin roll-out welcomed By Tate Papworth Brimbank council has welcomed the state government’s Recycling Victoria package. Under the package, a four bin system will rolled out across the state from next year. The new system will keep the red, yellow and green bins and add a purple bin for glass. Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou said it was great to see the suite of new policies being announced. “This is something Brimbank has been keenly awaiting for some time,” Cr Papafotiou

said. “Our submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry into Recycling and Waste Management in May 2019 highlighted the systemic issues with the provision of recycling and waste management in Victoria. “This week’s release of the Circular Economy Strategy, including the announcement of a four bin system to be rolled out across Victoria alongside the introduction of a container deposit scheme, aligns with Brimbank’s Waste, Recycling and Litter Strategy and should go a long way to reducing garbage and increasing

recycling rates in Victoria. “The four bin system is also consistent with our intention to introduce food organics into the kerbside green organics collection.” Cr Papafotiou said the council would seek further information on how the system would be funded. “Of course, the introduction of a four bin system will have significant implications for councils,” she said. “Council is keen to find out more information from the state government about how local government will be funded and supported to

roll out of the four bin system. “We also want to better understand how the planned increases to the landfill levy will be used to implement these new reforms to benefit communities, and avoid funds sitting idly in the sustainability fund.” The council also welcomed the announcement of a container deposit scheme. In 2018, the council wrote to the state government, urging it to consider introducing a container deposit scheme in Victoria and flagged that Brimbank would be an ideal city to pilot collection options.

Brimbank now has a club for chess mates to gather. The Brimbank Chess Club officially launched earlier this month, offering weekly lessons and spirited contest. Coach Phil Minichelli said he was delighted to be able to open a club in the area. “There’s a lot of talent in this area, but not really too many places to go and learn,” Mr Minichelli said. “We started up about three weeks ago. It’s normally a slow build, but we had eight last week and six yesterday so things are off to a good start.“ Mr Minichelli said all were welcome at the club, which caters for beginners. “It’s intended for anyone, but adults tend to be busy, so we’ve got kids at the moment. “It’s great for primary kids … there’s cognitive skills, visualisaton … so many benefits.” The club meets between 6-8pm each Tuesday

Mr Walsh said it has taken 20 years for the council to update the planning scheme because “development requiring planning permission has only recently occurred in this area”. The council hasn’t ruled out compensating impacted residents and acquiring land. “Any claims will be properly assessed and dealt with through Brimbank City Council’s governance processes,” Mr Walsh said.

Brimbank council has emphasised that the health risk to residents impacted by the Sunshine landfill methane issue is low. A 2013 EPA report, seen by Star Weekly, identified a “high risk” to residents, workers and the public in commercial and residential facilities surrounding the affected area. However, subsequent reports and monitoring have revised that risk to low. Many residents told Star Weekly last week they had purchased their property with no knowledge of buried waste and methane gas leaks in the surrounding area. Brimbank council director city development Kelvin Walsh said the former City of Sunshine provided information in compliance with legal requirements at the time. He said most affected homes were purchased in or around 1994. “The extent of waste is identified in many building permits and the foundation design of some buildings addresses the filling of the land,” Mr Walsh said. “Prior to 1999, the Brimbank Planning Scheme, and prior to that

Residents kept in the dark By Tate Papworth Residents living in houses built on and around the former Sunshine landfills say they hold fears for their health and property values. Star Weekly last week revealed that more than 80 properties built on and around the closed landfills are sitting on buried waste and are being exposed to methane gas. While Brimbank council insists the health risks to residents are low, residents say they still don’t know what constitutes “low” and have questioned why they were only being informed of the issue now. Thu Nguyen has lived in the area for four years and said he wished he had the information prior to purchasing. “I had no idea it was a landfill when I bought,” Mr Nguyen said. “I have a one-year-old and four-year-old child and I’m worried about their health. We have a big backyard and I worry that anything could potentially impact their health if they’re out playing in it. “If I’d known about the landfills I’d have researched the long-term affects and the impact to the value of the property before buying here.” Aaron Reid and his young family recently developed a property in the area. He said the news of methane gas exposure was a “horrible shock” to he and his wife. “We knew about the landfill before we bought here, but we thought it was behind our property. When the council knocked on the door, their diagrams show that’s not the case. “I have three young kids, we’ve just built on this land and now we’re hearing we’ve built the back portion over a quarry … it’s a massive concern. Had we known about this beforehand we would’ve done a lot more research before

moving here … as it stands we’re locked in for 28 years.” Mr Reid and a number of other residents have told Star Weekly they are pushing the council to hold a public meeting to discuss concerns as a community. Anthony, who didn’t want his last name published, said he was left confused by the sudden knock on his door by council staff telling him his property was affected. He said

he had more questions than answers. “I’ve been here 30 years or so and now they’re suddenly coming around and telling me gases are coming out of the ground and all this,” Anthony said. “When I asked questions, the answers just went off into different areas and I didn’t understand.” He said he held significant concerns following the conversation. “Of course I’m worried … 100 per cent.

boost from the State Government through the Growing Suburbs Fund and Children’s Facilities Capital Program. Fraser Rise Children’s and Community Centre also features kindergarten and materal and child health rooms, plus occasional care and neighbourhood house services. This $8.8 million facility received $3.2 million in State funding. Wine bar fights booze ban By Ewen McRae The owners of a recently opened wine bar in Caroline Springs say new restrictions on their liquor licence could make the business “unsustainable”. The Fancy Things Wine Bar has been operating under a temporary licence since December with a closing time of 11pm, but a new licence from Melton council has mandated a 10pm closure, with last drinks called at 9.30pm. The new licence also prohibits alcohol being

served in the bar’s outdoor courtyard, and closes the courtyard at 8pm. Owner Zoe Jones said the restrictions would place a huge strain on her business. “We would lose 25 seats outside, out of a 60-seat capacity venue,” Ms Jones said. “We’d have to lose junior staff members [and] reduce hours … it basically means revenue-wise we’d lose close to $2000 each day. That’s a significant amount, basically my rent. “We followed all the usual protocols for opening a business like this, and received just one objection from a resident.

“We’ve been trading with no complaints since December, and to be honest, have had nothing but immense support from the community for something like this to open up.” A petition to have the original operating hours reinstated received more than 2300 signatories in a week. Ms Jones said the support from the community had her hopeful the restrictions could be eased. “It’s a coffee and wine bar with a mini-grand piano, not the sort of thing that we want to be running into the late night,” Ms Jones said. “We’ve lived in Caroline Springs for 12 years

now, and we’ve always wanted a place we could go for a quiet drink to unwind with mates.” Melton council planning services manager Bob Baggio said the liquor restrictions on the bar were necessary given the location. “Fancy Things is located in a mixed use commercial and residential area,” Mr Baggio said. “Given the site’s proximity to residential apartments, it was considered that 10pm was an appropriate closing time. “In mixed use areas, it’s important that we balance the needs of businesses and residents so that neither are unreasonably affected.”

Understanding the water Water safety will be a key feature of the new St Albans Leisure Centre, once it’s built. Brimbank council and Life Saving Victoria have agreed to work together to develop an innovative water safety education program. The agreement was sealed after the two parties signed a memorandum of understanding. Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou said the initiative would have a focus on engaging with culturally and linguistically diverse communities, lifeguards and lifesavers. “Unfortunately the statistics show culturally and linguistically diverse communities are over represented in drowning statistics,” Cr Papafotiou said. “The upcoming development of the St Albans Health and Wellbeing Hub presents a perfect opportunity for council and Life Saving Victoria to work together to help create a centre that provides education and resources for multicultural communities, lifesavers

and lifeguards, to improve water safety understanding.” Life Saving Victoria manager multicultural projects David Holland said the partnership was imperative, given that people from multicultural backgrounds are over represented in drownings. “At the pool, along the coast or at inland waterways, water safety needs to be an ongoing priority for all Victorians and especially Victorians from multicultural backgrounds, with research showing about 30 per cent of people who drown in Australia were born overseas,” Mr Holland said. “Life Saving Victoria’s multicultural team is an industry leader in partnering with multicultural communities to teach vital water safety skills through education and training initiatives.” Tate Papworth

Development knocked back again By Tate Papworth Brimbank council has knocked back a planning permit for an Albion development for a second time. A revised application for the construction of five double-storey dwellings and reduction in visitor parking space at 63 Derrimut Street, was recommended for approval by a council officer. The officer stated an almost identical proposal for a separate development in the same street was approved by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in October, 2019. However Cr John Hedditch urged the council to refuse the application. He argued that the development would have a detrimental affect and impact on the neighbourhood character, didn’t offer enough carparking, and that it constitutes overdevelopment. “Again we’ve been out to have a look at this particular site. For me this one still stands very solidly where it has been,” Cr Hedditch said. “This is development of five units on a block that will comply in terms of space and so on, but it has a real feel of overdevelopment to it.” Cr Margaret Giudice also said she believed the proposal constituted an overdevelopment. “It’s very, very, very tight and with so much land available in Australia, why are we squishing all these tiny little houses on blocks?” Cr Giudice said. Councillor Daniel Allan spoke in support of the development, however the permit was refused. The planning permit was originally refused by the council in November 2018 after community opposition, which included 19 objections. The matter was taken to VCAT on appeal and the council decision upheld.

MAFS experience ends Married at First Sight star Amanda Micallef has taken aim at her television bride and the show’s producers. Amanda, who left the show last week, claimed her on-screen bride Tash Herz had a girlfriend the entire time. “I found out that Tash had a girlfriend the whole time, which was pretty disappointing,” Amanda said. “We barely spent any time together on the show and I know why. “What she said on camera was that she wanted to build on a friendship and I made her feel uncomfortable, but she was seeing someone the whole time.” The St Albans resident said the experiment wasn’t what she thought it would be and slammed the show’s producers. “I went on the show to have fun, but I didn’t. I had a s**t time. It’s pretty clear they only match people for ratings. In what world was a European businesswoman like myself going to be a good match for a heavily tattooed Australian bartender?” While her time on the show didn’t work out as she’d hoped, Amanda said she’s been overwhelmed by the support she’s received from the public. As for her love life? “I am speaking to someone at the moment and there’s a connection, but it’s early.”

Dumped, now feline fine By Tate Papworth Liam and Thomas are all heart, which is more than can be said for those who dumped the then one-week old kittens in a Brimbank dumpster. Weighing just 150 grams – the size of a small banana – the brothers were in bad shape when they were discovered. They’ve spent the past 70 days at the Lost Dog’s Home North Melbourne shelter recovering. Having beaten the odds, the outgoing, playful and very affectionate kittens are ready to find a new home. Unfortunately, they’re not alone. Spokeswoman for the Lost Dog’s Home Suzana Talevski said the home dealt with a lot of dumpled animals. She said people often had to give up their pets for a range of reasons, including relationship breakdown, moving house and rental arrangements. “We urge members of the public to please not dump animals,” Ms Talevski said. “If you find a stray animal have a heart and, please take it to your local council, vet or animal welfare organisation. “There’s never an excuse to dump animals in such a cruel manner.” Kittens Liam and Thomas were cared for by the home’s foster team, during work hours and at home. Concern over council reforms Brimbank council has raised concerns about the state government’s decision to back down on plans to cap donations to candidates in time for this year’s local government elections. The government previously flagged plans to crack down on donations to council election candidates as part of its reforms to the local government sector. But it’s Local Government Bill, which passed the Legislative Assembly late last year, did not include donation reforms. The council said the decision to back down on donation caps was one of its major concerns with the bill. It said introducing legislation as soon as possible, which includes a ban on donations to local council candidates from property developers and the gambling industry, would help bring about greater transparency. Such rules would bring about a ban on foreign donations, the imposition of an aggregate cap on donations from a single donor, and a requirement for all councils to have a gift register and a publicly transparent gift policy. The council also holds significant concerns about the prospect of being forced to move to a single-member ward structure. In July 2019, the council said it would not support the proposal to introduce single member wards, but would support a range of ward structures for councils. Tate Papworth

Keilor council is almost certain to give the go-ahead to an amended plan for an $11 million shopping centre on the corner of Milleara Road and Buckley Street, Avondale Heights. Developers of the East Keilor Shopping Centre project say a major supermarket chain has already agreed to lease part of the proposed new building.

The battle to stop the building of an abattoir on the border of Sunshine has erupted again with the news that the Board of Works has approved a fresh application for the project. After losing a protracted battle last year in which Sunshine council, Altona council and hundreds of local residents participated, Protean Pty. Ltd. has re-applied and won approval from the Board of Works, subject to a number of conditions.

Eagles ready for redemption By Lance Jenkinson A final round loss did not take the gloss of what Sunshine Eagles have achieved to this point of the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 season. Getting beaten 8-5 away to Fitzroy Lions on Saturday was a minor blemish for the Eagles, who finished the regular season as the runaway minor premiers and will charge into the playoffs as the team to beat. Eagles coach Stuart Clayton opted to experiment with his line-up against Fitzroy, resting some keys pitching arms, shaking up the batting order and making some changes to the defence. The Eagles still finished with the best record in the league with 18 wins, seven losses and a draw. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were just concentrating on hitting and defence today,â&#x20AC;? Clayton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We looked after our arms for Tuesday [opening night of the playoffs]. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just tried a few things in the field. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We moved guys into different positions.â&#x20AC;? Twelve months ago, Sunshine was in an identical position. The Eagles were cock-a-hoop after finishing on top and faced Geelong Baycats in the semi-finals, like they will this week when the best-of-three series begins tonight (Tuesday). It was the Baycats who swept the series last year and the Eagles got exposed on the big stage. The Eagles might not have been ready on that occasion, but they certainly are now.

SPORT Relegation becomes a reality as Keilor fails to fire

Keilor has endured a week from cricketing hell. The first bitter pill the Blues had to swallow was a loss to Sunshine United in the Kookaburra Twenty20 Cup final. Set 121 for victory, the Blues fell short in a 14-run loss. But the worst was yet to come for Keilor. Entering the final round of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division season in third-last spot and with their destiny in their own hands, all the Blues needed to do to stave off relegation was to win. They failed to stick to their end of the bargain, again failing in a run chase, going down by 27 runs to Druids at Joe Brown Recreation Reserve on Saturday. Not only did Keilor get sucked into the

relegation zone, wins to Sunshine United and Strathmore left them with the wooden spoon. Keilor will play division 1 cricket next season, along with Sunshine United, the other relegated side. Elsewhere in the VTCA, Deer Park has narrowly missed out on the division 1 west finals by three points, despite a late round win over Seddon. Sunshine has qualified for the division 2 finals in second place and will meet St Andrews Pascoe Vale in the semis, while Keilor Park missed out on the finals by six points. Sunshine Heights had a three-wicket win over Williamstown Imperials, but settled in fifth spot and missed the division 3 finals. Grand United suffered a heavy loss to St

Andrews and coughed up top spot in division 4. The second-placed Gorillas will face Footscray United in the semis. Sunshine YCW crashed out of the division 5 finals race in a disappointing second half of the season, which saw them win just once in the new year. In the NWMCA Luscombe Shield, Kealba-Green Gully took third spot in the finals after a free-scoring victory over Aberfeldie-St Johns in the last round. Harsh reality hits Tigers By Lance Jenkinson Sunshine United experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in a roller coaster final week in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association. The Tigers were on cloud nine after securing the Kookaburra Twenty20 Cup for the second time in three seasons. They repeated the dose against Keilor, the side they beat in the 2017-18 decider, winning by 14 runs at Joe Brown Recreation Reserve. Tigers captain Daniel Norris was thrilled to see his side return to the top of the T20 mountain in the association. “We’ve gone on a good run with T20,” he said. “We got through to the MCG game in the Regional Big Bash last year. “It’s just been a format that’s really suited us. “Our players seem to lift for T20 games. “It’s kind of led us on into winning this week.” The Twenty20 triumph created a good vibe within the Sunshine United camp as it attempted to stave off relegation from the top-flight senior division. The Tigers were confronted with one of the toughest away games in the league, powerhouse Yarraville Club at Hansen Reserve. Instead of running scared, Sunshine United went full steam ahead, upsetting the Clubbers by 55 runs. “To win against Yarraville Club to try and save relegation, it’s a really great effort by the boys,” Norris said. Even after the game, Sunshine United was not aware if it had been relegated or not. With third-placed Keilor losing to Druids,

they would at least leap-frog them on the ladder. But the result that Sunshine United’s survival ultimately hinged on was second-last Strathmore’s game against St Albans. The Mores beat St Albans by six runs and it led to Sunshine United being relegated by an agonising 0.02 per cent. The Tigers could consider themselves stiff to go down with 36 competition points, but that is the brutal nature of two teams getting relegated from an eight-team competition. Norris was not making any excuses though. “The competition has been very even, but we probably let ourselves down a couple of times,” he said. “Disappointed to get into the position that we were. “When relegation was on the line, I was very impressed with the boys, but it was just not to be.” Sunshine United will still cherish the win away to Yarraville Club on Saturday. After posting 147, thanks largely to 39 from man of the match Roshan Laksiri, the Tigers rolled the finals-bound Clubbers for just 92. Left arm off spinner Laksiri capped a superb game with 5-18 off 14.2, while frontline bowler Tom O’Brien took 4-25 off 13. “Tommy O’Brien has been absolutely sensational all year,” Norris said. “It’s his second year at the club and he’s just got better and better. “[Laksiri] just did what he always does. “He bowled on the spot and they just threw their wickets away.” St Albans will carry the hopes of Brimbank in the senior division finals. The Saints will face Doutta Stars in the semi-final this weekend.

The Lions were on their knees a month ago after a mid-season slump, but three consecutive wins to finish the home-and-away campaign proved enough to snatch sixth spot. Lions captain Jarrod Wakeling said the experience of playing do-or-die every round for the past three rounds is the ideal preparation for a finals tilt. “We’re feeling pretty good at the moment,” he said. “It was stacked against us four weeks ago. “We had to win every game and have a bit of luck go our way. “When you win those hard fought games when things get tough, there’s a lot of pressure on and you find a way to get over the line, I think that’s what finals cricket is about.” Taylors Lakes had to do it the hard way in the final round. The Lions ventured to Altona to cause what most would feel like an upset. Set 143 for victory, the Lions timed their run to perfection, winning eight down with two overs to spare. It was not the only part of the equation that needed to occur for Taylors Lakes to reach the finals. Only when news filtered in that Melton had lost could the Lions erupt in celebration. The Lions successful chase was underpinned by English import Aamir Raza. Raza top-scored with 48 batting at No. 6. His form with the bat has been impressive in the new year with scores of 46 and 48 not out in his previous two digs. A leg spinning all-rounder, Raza was also influential with the ball, taking 2-26

While the first week of the finals will pit two in-form sides in Williamstown and Taylors Lakes together in combat, both riding three-game winning streaks, Wakeling was quick to adopt the underdog tag, even though he knows his side has the potential to cause a boilover. “When they played us earlier in the year, they absolutely flogged us,” Wakeling said. “That’s probably a good thing for us because they didn’t see us in our good times and I don’t think they’ve got a lot of homework to take into next week’s game because we were that bad.”
