Mums on the green The Keilor Bowls Club is calling on young mums to take to the green. The club has just launched Bowling with Babies, a program which encourages young parents to bring their babies to the green for a bowl and chat. Keilor Bowls Club chairman Joe Watkins said it’s a good way to try something new. “This is a great opportunity for young parents to participate in something they probably never have,” he said. “It’s also a venue for a meet and greet situation – there’ll be coffee provided, time for a chat about life in general and the opportunity to learn a bit about the game of bowls.” The program will be held each Thursday morning from 10.30am-12.30pm. Mr Watkins said early interest had been a positive sign. “This is a whole new program for us. We don’t know how successful it’s going to be, but we’ve had a lot of interest from mums to date. “It’s for mums and dads with a bub up to about three years old. “They might like bowls, they might not, but it’s more like a social event for everyone to see the facility.” Tate Papworth

VU skills hub unveiled Victoria University has unveiled a $30 million state of the art skills hub at its Sunshine campus. The Sunshine Skills Hub includes a health and community services centre of excellence, an innovation and incubation space, and a learning commons. The innovation centre is equipped with teaching rooms with new technology to teach students advanced manufacturing, rapid prototype development and problem-solving skills. The new facility is poised to play a major role in Brimbank’s big build, which will aim to link students directly into local jobs created by major infrastructure projects slated for the municipality in the near future. St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman said the

benefits will be felt across the west. “This is a big day for Melbourne’s west. Victoria University has played a critical role for the past 100 years in providing the community practical training and its new Skills Hub will contribute to a thriving economy and the jobs of the future,” Ms Suleyman said. Training, Skills and Higher Education Minister Gayle Tierney opened the facility last week and said it will be a pivotal link between education and industry. “The skills that students develop at the Sunshine Skills Hub will drive innovation and support Victoria’s future economic success,” Ms Tierney said.

“The Sunshine Skills Hub will be an important link between our schools, TAFEs, universities and industry.” The hub will also allow the university to expand its course offerings. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Grant Dreher said the hub had been purpose built. “This impressive state-of-the-art learning space offers students, people from industry and our community a dynamic, technologically innovative environment,” Mr Dreher said. “The facility is purpose-designed to reflect the innovative nature of the programs it will offer as we prepare students and industry for the future of work.”

Brimbank retains pokies loss title By Tate Papworth Brimbank has again topped the state for money lost to gaming machines. A whopping $72,619,432.51 was funnelled into machines across Brimbank over the first half of the 2019-2020 financial year, according to data published by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (FCGLR). Alliance for Gambling Reform chief advocate Tim Costello said while there was some positives, there is still a lot of harm being done by gaming machines in Brimbank.

“It was … great to see a $1.3 million decrease in losses in Brimbank, the home of the highest amount of gambling harm in Victoria. “There has been much work on gambling harm prevention in Brimbank and the inner west of Melbourne, and it’s good to see some

of that coming to fruition,” he said. “However, Brimbank remains the local government area with the highest losses in the state. “It’s impossible to ignore that the area is also one of the state’s most stressed communities for a multitude of reasons, many of which interconnect with gambling harm. “A $1.3 million decrease is fantastic, but people in Brimbank are still losing $391,000 to poker machines every single day.” In a bid to counter the pokies crisis, Brimbank council last year introduced a policy that charges clubs that operate gaming

machines on council land commercial rates instead of peppercorn rent when their leases are up for review. The affected clubs – St Albans Sports Club and Green Gully Soccer Club – are eligible for discounts of up to 80 per cent on the market rent if they introduce gambling harm-minimisation measures. According to VCGLR figures, a total of $2,596,287.77 was lost at the St Albans Sports Club, while $3,034,460.26 was lost at the Green Gully Soccer Club in the past six months.

Millenium Man loses his globe the future holds for the iconic statue. In November, Vicinity announced plans for a redevelopment of the centre, which included restoration works on the Millenium Man, which has continued to deteriorate over the years. When asked last week if restoration would depend on the results of current assessment works, Vicinity remained tight-lipped, saying more would be revealed after the works were complete. Village Cinemas commissioned the colossal

ironman in 1997 and three years ago said it would work with Vicinity Centres to restore him. In a statement at the time Village Cinemas said: “We proudly commissioned the Millennium Man statue 20 years ago and are now working collaboratively with Vicinity on the restoration and ultimate fate of the statue.” Works never eventuated.

If you’ve been to the Sunshine Marketplace recently, you may have noticed something different about the giant gaurdian of its carpark. The Millenium Man statue has been fenced off and the globe he has proudly held above his head for more than a decade is gone. A spokeswoman for Vicinity Centres, the company which operates the Marketplace, told Star Weekly the giant statue had been fenced off while its original builders assess its state. A 21-year-old Sydenham woman became the 12th Australian to test positive to the coronavirus last week. Bianca was a passenger onboard cruise ship the Diamond Princess. The ship has 3700 people onboard and 174 cases of coronavirus have been detected. Bianca and her family were forced to disembark the ship and enter quarantine in a hospital two hours from the port of Yokohama where the ship had been docked. Bianca made an impassioned plea to come home across multiple media outlets last week, but said she was in the dark as to when that may occur. While no cases of the virus have been confirmed locally, staff at Sunshine Hospital remain on standby. Western Health executive director operations Natasha Toohey said a wide range of measures are in place in response to the outbreak. “Within Western Health we have our own team of highly experienced specialists overseeing our response and ensuring we have the appropriate level of readiness,” Ms Toohey said. “We have screening in our emergency departments and clear steps are taken with any patient who might be suspected of having the virus. “This includes appropriate follow up and further care as needed.” Ms Toohey added that contingency plans are being put in place in the event that the outbreak worsens.

Festival celebrates diverse voices There’s lots on offer for lovers of writing and reading during the Brimbank Writers and Readers Festival, from 19-28 March. Local priority push for airport rail By Tate Papworth Brimbank council has urged the state and federal governments to consider local priorities when making a decision about the controversial Melbourne Airport rail link. A dedicated tunnel from Sunshine to the city is the sticking point, with the state and federal governments reportedly favouring using existing above-ground tracks. Trains would enter the CBD via the new Metro Tunnel. According to The Age, private consortium

AirRail, which is comprised of Super fund IFM Investors, Metro Trains, Southern Cross station and Melbourne Airport has written to the Prime Minister and Premier offering an extra $2 billion to build the project. The additional funding would bring the consortium’s total offer to $7 billion. The airport rail with a stop at Sunshine is the centrepiece of Brimbank council’s bold plans to transform the municipality. Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou urged decision makers to consider local priorities. “Brimbank council supports a fast, efficient

and dedicated Melbourne Airport Rail service with a stop between the CBD and airport at the Sunshine Super Hub,” Cr Papafotiou said. “Council is calling on the federal and state governments to consider local as well as regional priorities as part of the final design process for the Melbourne Airport Rail. “We’re keen for the governments to make a decision soon on how to deliver this vital project, and that this decision is made with the best interests of the community and the need to build for future growth top of mind.” Cr Papafotiou said a dedicated rail link to the

airport is only one piece of the puzzle. “Brimbank is also calling for the development of an integrated transport strategy for Melbourne’s west, to complement the Sunshine Super Hub. “A regional transport strategy that fairly integrates and connects the local community and broader region to the Sunshine Super Hub and Sunshine Priority Precinct, is critical to help ensure fair public transport access, reduce congestion, and to connect the region’s job, education, health and social precincts,” she said.

No Wright turn A set of traffic lights in Sunshine has been struck by a vehicle – again. The lights at the corner of Wright Street and Anderson Road have been struck by turning vehicles on multiple occasions over the past few years. VicRoads has received reports of 32 faults involving the traffic lights at the intersection between January 2014 and February 2020. Faults can include the signals being struck by a vehicle or another object, broken light globes or interruptions to the power supply. Presently, a support guard has been placed around the base of one of the traffic lights and a power chord is linking it to another set of lights. Local resident, Marcus posted photos of the most recent damage to Facebook. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results – just like VicRoads replacing the traffic lights at the

corner of Wright Street and Anderson Road, which keep getting knocked down by turning trucks,” the post stated. Another resident said a plan was needed to stop history from repeating. “These are classified as main roads and as such trucks have as much right to drive on them as anyone else. “What needs to happen is a more comprehensive plan for properly located lights and extra turn space for trucks to enable them to manoeuvre around corners easily without having to take another lane.” VicRoads said it inspects all traffic lights and pedestrian signals every three months. Home help for health Positive mental health at home will be the focus of a forum coming to Fraser Rise at the end of the month. The ‘Mind Matters’ forum will be for families with young children and those starting their parenting journey, and aims to equip them with the tools and resources they need to support positive mental health at home. The forum will feature presentations by The Motherhood author Jamila Rizvi, expert insights on children’s development and parents’ wellbeing, and an expo of local mental health support services. Melton mayor Lara Carli said the forum was a great chance for young families to access expert advice and maintain good mental health. “We welcome 52 babies and 52 families

to the City of Melton every week and we want to ensure that all local families have the resources they need for positive mental health,” Cr Carli said. “The early years of parenthood are full of big changes, joys and challenges. Being prepared with tools, strategies, and knowledge around mental health is so important and is why I raised this initiative with council. “Minds Matter is a wonderful chance for young families to gain insights, practical tips and information direct from mental health experts.” The free event will run from 5pm on February 27 at the Fraser Rise Community Centre, 46 City Vista Court, Fraser Rise Bookings: melton.vic.gov.au/mindsmatter.

MFB crews quickly contained a fire that started in a garage in Taylors Lakes earlier this month. A number of callers reported smoke issuing from Mara Court at 2.38am where the garage was attached to a double storey house. About 30 firefighters managed to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes. No one was injured in the incident.

Call to open Sydenham Park By Tate Papworth There’s a growing push to have Sydenham Park opened to the community. A draft master plan aimed at opening up the area to the wider community was tabled at a council meeting in October last year. The Friends of Sydenham Park (FOSP) has since made its own submission to the council and has thrown its support behind plans to provide sporting grounds at the southern end of the park. The site is one of five shortlisted by Football Victoria to become the home of the women’s national soccer team, the Matildas. FOSP spokesman Neil Hunichen said opening the park up to the public was paramount. “It’s just sitting there, we talk about wanting more open space and here we have this hidden gem not being utilised,” Mr Hunichen said. “Under our plan, we’d have a sports and wellness centre, a viewing platform for aircraft, an early settler museum and full size ovals.” Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins agreed that the site needed to be opened up to the public. “Plans have been done in past and sat dormant,” Ms Hutchins said. “As a stage one, I’d like to see the park opened, maybe one day over the weekends to get the public in there. “It’s a hugely wasted resource with the gates closed and I’d like to see the council support a masterplan.” Ms Hutchins met with the council last week and discussed the future of the park. “The big concern for the council is the need for public toilets and sealed tracks,” she said. “I told them I’m happy to partner with them on that with potential grants … but they really

False alarm over soil trucks By Tate Papworth Keilor residents have expressed concern that construction work at Melbourne Airport could spread PFAS-contaminated soil. The airport is constructing a $300 million “taxiway Zulu” which will provide additional space for aircraft traffic. means construction activity on the airport is put on hold until conditions clear,” Mr Smith said. “The long line of trucks on Arundel Road was unfortunately due to those vehicles not being allowed onto the airfield in low visibility weather conditions, which resulted in the traffic jam nearby residents will have noticed. “Those trucks are being used to move soil between construction projects on the airfield, one of which is to build a new access road at the northern end of the airport so that we can remove this kind of truck traffic from residential streets around the airport.” He said all trucks leaving the airport were

No need for fright over flights By Tate Papworth A leading Keilor real estate agent has downplayed fears that Melbourne Airport’s proposed third runway will significantly impact house prices in the area. In January Star Weekly reported that median house prices in Keilor dropped by almost 10 per cent to $912,000 in the final quarter of 2019. Safety first online Pupils at Emmaus Catholic Primary School are doing their best to make the internet a safer place. The school took part in Safer Internet Day last week and senior school leader Laura Chamberlain said there were lessons for all. “It’s about every adult, every child and every one of us coming together to use the internet respectfully, safely and cautiously,” she said. “It’s a day to discuss how we can deal with inappropriate things on the internet responsibly.” Pupils, parents and teachers came together and participated in a range of activities before enjoying a morning tea. Ms Chamberlain said the strong turnout was a clear indication that everyone was on the same page when it came to internet safety. “The strong participation tells the students … and parents of Emmaus that we are here to guide and support them in being safe and responsible when using the internet.

Haze link to heart health By Goya Dmytryshchak Bushfire smoke haze may increase the number of cardiac arrests and other heart problems across Victoria and further afield, according to new research. Williamstown’s Anjali Haikerwal, whose doctorate examined health impacts of the 2006-07 Victorian bushfires, found that just two days of exposure to small particulate matter (PM2.5) was associated with increased risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and hospital admissions for cardiovascular problems. Microscopic PM2.5 pollution is about a third the width of a human hair, or smaller than a speck of dust, and is inhaled straight into the lungs and bloodstream. “These particles may act as a trigger factor for acute cardiovascular events; therefore it’s important not to delay seeking medical help if you experience symptoms of heart problems during smoke episodes from bushfires,” Dr Haikerwal said. Using statewide data from the Victorian Ambulance Cardiac Arrest Registry and Department of Health and Human Services, Dr Haikerwal found a nearly seven per cent increase in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and about two per cent increase in emergency department visits and hospitalisations for acute cardiac events. People aged 65 and over and men were the most vulnerable. Her findings were published in the prestigious Journal of the American Heart Association. She said more research was needed into medium to long-term health impacts of smoke exposure from intense bushfires burning for days and weeks as witnessed recently. “It’s very unprecedented at present –

the smoke haze which has lingered on in Melbourne and neighbouring places and Victoria for days,” Dr Haikerwal said. “In recent weeks, most parts of Australia have been shrouded in bushfire smoke for days with very poor to hazardous air quality

– high levels of small particulate matter PM2.5 – reported in many cities and towns. “And the most important thing is the levels of these harmful particulate matter – they have been in the atmosphere for weeks now and at levels which are very harmful to a human body.”

New online hub for youth Sunshine’s The Youth Junction has unveiled a new website for a new era. The site has been designed to provide easy navigation and a smoother referral process into programs and services that support young people in Melbourne’s west. The Youth Junction is a not-for-profit entity, which aims to provide support to disadvantaged young people. The website now offers opportunities for both young people and key stakeholders to navigate what’s on offer at the Visy Cares Hub, establish contact with key workers and have access to crisis response services after hours. Programs offer an expression of interest form that can also be filled in with the click of a button. The Youth Junction chief executive Michael Clarke said it was imperative to keep up with the times and the website was a good way to keep young people engaged. “The young person today has a choice; they can engage in anti-social behaviour or pro social behaviour. MY BRIMBANK Those who have attended the Lumbar and Co Coffee shop at Brimbank Park might have come across David Lathouras, the cafe’s music director. He spoke about the live music options for the venues with Tate Papworth. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I moved to Keilor in 2012 from Tasmania. In Tasmania I was the music co-ordinator for several festivals including the autumn festival in the Derwent Valley which has 250,00 people. We had five stages there. When I moved to Melbourne it was hard to get connected in the music scene here. What do you like best about the area? The people of Keilor and the surrounds are all very nice to deal with, although the music scene was dead on my arrival. What could be done better? I don’t think a lot needs to change, the people are nice, the area is beautiful. The people here look out for each other. Tell us about your role at Lumbar Cafe. My role came by chance. I was walking my dog and asked Fraser, the owner, if he had any music happening. He said no, but would love to at some stage. With that I told him I’d bring some gear and play some music on the next Sunday. We started a social media push and slowly, but surely the crowds have come. We have trialled a few musicians to get a feel for what people wanted to hear and we are now very happy with the performers. Fraser has made me the co-ordinator for all the music at the cafe and while we do have our singers and musicians for the next few months, I am always on the look out for talent.

And you have some big upcoming events? We have music arranged four months in advance. The winter shows will continue as well even if its cold and wet, we will move the shows to the inside venue. On February 23,

we have a duo from Castlemaine coming. The last time they performed they had the crowd spellbound, playing the classics from Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and Dean Martin. What’s the future look like for live

entertainment at the venue? We would like to see music every Sunday and we will build up to that because we both feel the cafe and park can be the mecca of live Sunday music in the northwest of Melbourne.

Cr Lara Carli I was thrilled last week to hear that I’d been appointed to the 2020 Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel (LGMAP) by The Hon Adem Somyurek MP, Minister for Local Government and Minister for Small Business. Made up of 15 Mayors from across Victoria, the LGMAP meets four times a year, and provides high level advice to the Minister on a range of legislative, regulatory, and policy decisions which impact on local government. It’s a great honour to be appointed to the LGMAP, and I look forward to working with my fellow Mayors, and Minister Somyurek, to help inform important decision making that will influence matters of strategic importance not only in the City of Melton, but right across Victoria.

Clean Up Australia Day is on in less than two weeks and with local events happening all over the City of Melton, it’s a great chance to help your neighbourhood look its best. Across the country, 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste is created each year and unfortunately some of this ends up in parks, roadsides, bush, waterways and oceans. You can register online to join the clean-up – either check out existing clean-up events, or register another site that needs love, attention, and some enthusiastic volunteers to collect and remove rubbish. Local sites already registered include Toolern Creek, Navan Park, Melton Botanic Garden, Caroline Springs Library precinct, and Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve. There are plenty of opportunities for local businesses and schools to get involved, too. Schools can run their own clean-up activity with students, and access lesson plans on waste and litter. Businesses can coordinate team building clean-up days, work on waste reduction campaigns as advocacy partners, or donate funds to the cause. Being a Councillor has not only given me the opportunity to give back to a community that has been so kind to me and my family, but also to advocate for those who are disadvantaged, or feel they have no voice. I was blessed to have been brought up in a loving and nurturing environment, with strong female role models who taught me to stand up for what I believe in, and never settle for mediocrity. Most people know I have a daughter

who lives with a profound disability, so advocating in this space is very important to me. Issues around access and inclusion affect hundreds, if not thousands, of local residents, and I invite everyone to look around, at loved ones, friends and within the community, to see what they could do to make our City more inclusive and accessible for everyone. Sometimes even the smallest gesture can have the biggest impact. For now, I thank all Cambridge Ward residents for their trust and support in allowing me to be their local Councillor. St Albans Technical School may be forced to send children home next week because of staff shortages. Principal of the school, Mr Roger Shepherd, in a letter to parents this week, said that for the first time in many years, the school may be forced to dismiss classes which have no teachers appointed.

Rate relief might be on the way for the people of Sunshine. But it would involve reduced spending on sport and the arts. And industries would be required to bear a greater rate burden to lighten the load on ordinary house-holders. Council officers are preparing a report which could lead to the City of Sunshine switching from the Net Annual Value (NAV) to the Capital Improved Value (CIV) rating system.

Brimbank has the third biggest field in this year’s Victorian local government elections, with 46 candidates contesting three-year terms for the nine one-seat wards. Brimbank’s sitting councillors are all opposed. Voting is on March 18.

Brimbank schools are forking out more than $40,000 to install closed-circuit television cameras to stop graffiti and vandalism and keep students safer. Schools in the area, tired of paying to clean up and repairing damage caused by vandals on the weekends, have taken security into their own hands, paying for the systems out of their own budgets.

SPORT High-flying Eagles become even stronger What a luxury it is for top-of-the-ladder Sunshine Eagles to be able to reintegrate Melbourne Aces championship winner Allan de San Miguel into the team for its run to the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 finals. A week after playing a huge role in the Aces first Australian Baseball League championship title, de San Miguel was back in an Eagles uniform and starring in a 6-2 win over Berwick City at Barclay Reserve. de San Miguel is noted for his power bat and the trains that run parallel to Talmage Street were not safe when he stepped up to the plate on Saturday. The 32-year-old catcher, a long-time member of the Australian team, put the game beyond doubt with a three-run home run blast to left field in the direction of the tracks. It was not a case of de San Miguel bullying a local player either, his big home run came off

Jordan Young (two hits) and Nikau Pouaka-Grego (one hit and two walks) were strong both offensively and in the field. “Everyone shared it around today, so it was really good,” Clayton said. Sunshine’s pitching was spot-on throughout. The Eagles got strong service from starter Riley Barr, who pitched five innings, and relievers Griffin Weir and Adam Irons, who worked two innings each. “It was a good effort from the pitchers,” Clayton said. Sunshine will start a three-game series with Fitzroy Lions on Saturday at Barclay Reserve before turning its focus on the finals. By Lance Jenkinson Melbourne Knights are cherishing the point gained in new coach Stuart Munro’s first game in charge. “Under the circumstances, you take a point all day,” Knights football operations manager Mark Ivkovic said. The Knights earnt their share of the points the hard way, playing with a numerical disadvantage for most of Friday night’s 1-1 draw with Port Melbourne Sharks in the National Premier League season opener at JL Murphy Reserve. A reckless tackle by Knights midfielder Mathew Breeze on Port Melboure’s Lochlan Reus eventually led to Breeze’s sending off. Referee Adam Bavcar initially pulled out a yellow card as a punishment for Breeze, but with Reus in pain on the ground, he sought a second opinion from the referee’s assistant. Bavcar changed his decision, pulling out a red card and giving Breeze his marching orders in his debut game with the Knights. While initially incensed that the yellow turned into a red, Ivkovic was satisfied with the explanation given by Bavcar. “I spoke to the referee at half-time and questioned why he gave a yellow first and then changed his mind to the red,” Ivkovic said. “He said from his angle, Mathew Breeze got the ball, but then his assistant called him over and said it was a pretty bad challenge and it should be a red card. “Play hadn’t re-started, so he changed it to a red card, which was probably the right decision in the end because it was a pretty poor challenge. “I appreciate him explaining it to me and that cooled the situation down.” Down to 10 men, Melbourne Knights did not simply roll over. The Knights provided moments of excitement for their travelling fans and led right up until the fatigue of playing a man short took its toll. A piece of individual brilliance from striker Hamish Watson had the Knights in front in the 68th minute. After chasing down a long ball, Watson danced around the first defender, stayed upright after a slight bump from a second defender and coolly slotted home before a third defender could make a tackle. “That’s why Hamish is one of the best strikers in the league,” Ivkovic said. “He can create something out of nothing. “When that ball was played to him, no chance you would think it would end in a goal, but he’s got a knack of knowing how to finish and he for sure put that one away.”

Athletics Rupert Lugo has sprinted his way into the Keilor Gift history books on Saturday night. Lugo, running off an 8.50 metre handicap, scorched the Joe Brown Recreation Reserve turf in the 120 metre open final, winning in a time of 12.573 seconds. Lugo beat Jara Konteh (12.617) and Chris Vi (12.680). Hannah Duynhoven took the glory in the women’s 120-metre gift final. Starting on a 13.00m handicap, Duynhoven had a winning time of 14.387 seconds, beating Sounya Visvanathan (14.467) and Caitlyn Nicholson (14.615).

Cricket Keilor is proving a dominant force in Victorian Turf Cricket Association Twenty20 cricket this summer. Both the Blues men’s and women’s T20 teams have qualified for the finals. In the men’s, Keilor took care of business with a 24-run win over Maribyrnong Park St Marys at Joe Brown Recreation Reserve.
