Back to school a double delight

Teachers at Sydenham Hillside Primary School could be forgiven for thinking they’re seeing double. The school has welcomed six sets of twins as part of this year’s prep intake. Principal Ben Russell said it’s the most the school has ever had in one intake. “We’ve actually only got four grade one classes, so this year we have more sets of twins than we do grade one classes,” he said. “We’ve actually had a bit of fun with it and the parents have helped us out with easy ways to tell them apart, like markings on hats etc.” He said all the pupils had fitted in well. “The excitement of day one is generally pretty much on show for everyone to see,” he said. Mr Russell credited the school’s prep teachers for the smooth transition. “The teaching staff in prep classrooms and the way they can work really quickly with those kids to develop welcoming relationships is a credit to them.” Tate Papworth

Keilor Gift in doubt again By Tate Papworth The future of the Keilor Gift is again in doubt after Brimbank council slashed funding for the event. The event was scrapped in 2017 due to a lack of funding, but was reintroduced in 2018 as a two-day festival across the whole Keilor Village. Keilor Gift organising committee chairperson Hayden Kelly this week said funding had again been cut and there would be no village festival to accompany this year’s gift, to be held on February 15. “It’s disappointing that the council saw fit

to cut our funding from $23,000 to $10,000, which means we’re unable to run the festival,” Mr Kelly said. “It’s a bit bizarre considering it was the council who came to us two years ago with the idea of running the festival and the funding increase and now they’ve pulled it without consultation. “If the funding isn’t restored next year we’ll have to consider not running it.” Keilor Traders Association president Pat Senserrick said it was a blow to retailers in the village. “It’s a bit of a kick in the guts to be honest,”

Mr Senserrick said. “Traders in shopping strips across the country are doing it tough at the moment and big events like this, that bring lots of people in, are looked forward to. “There’s a real sense that we’ve been forgotten in this community.” Brimbank council director advocacy, partnerships and community Dan Hogan defended the council’s decision and said the gift was subject to the same process as any other applicant. “The grants process each year gives all community groups an equal chance to compete for funding,” Mr Hogan said.

“It is not a perpetual fund, and funding decisions are not based on historical funding arrangements, but on the merits, evidence and relative strength of each annual application.” However Cr Virginia Tachos said councillors were kept out of the funding process, despite fighting for the event. “Decisions on grants funding are increasingly being made by administrations not politicians,” Cr Tachos said. “Brimbank council administration assessed the applications and made the funding decisions. Councillors were … separated from the decision-making process altogether.”

Bait a poison risk for pets By Tate Papworth Pet owners are being urged to exercise vigilance with rabbit baiting commencing at a number of parks from this week. The council will be using the poison Pindone on carrots at Green Gully Reserve in Keilor Downs and Taylors Creek between Green Gully Road and Burrowye Crescent, Keilor. Baiting will be conducted until Monday, March 30. Animal Referral Hospital in Essendon took to its Facebook page to warn pet owners to keep

their dogs on a leash. “All pets not closely monitored (e.g. not on a lead) are at risk of poisoning by either ingesting large quantities of the bait or the carcasses of deceased rabbits,” the post said. Pindone is a similar poison to rat bait. It prevents normal blood clotting resulting in haemorrhaging throughout the body. While designed to be fatal, there is an antidote. “If you are concerned at all please see your own vet ASAP,” the Facebook post said. “Vets in the Brimbank and surrounding areas are aware of the program and have been

advised re the Vitamin K1 antidote.” Symptoms of poisoning include lethargy, increased respiratory rate and effort, pale gums, weakness and bleeding into the gastrointestinal tract. The council said the baiting program is part of a greater obligation to keep the local environment clear of feral animals. In February last year, more than 100 residents signed a petition calling on the state government to act on the feral rabbit problem at the Parks Victoria-operated Brimbank Park and Horseshoe Bend Farm.

Morning brew diverted from landfill Melbourne has a strong reputation for its coffee, but with that comes a growing number of takeaway coffee cups ending up in landfill. To help combat the issue, CS Square shopping centre has introduced a recycling system to dispose of cups used in the centre. Recyling bins shaped as coffee cups will be highly visible throughout the mall in a move centre manager Rod Kennedy said was the result of community feedback. “We have listened to our community’s concern for the environment and their desire for local businesses to be more sustainable,” he said. “CS Square has adopted this initiative to increase its recycling capacity and become a more environmentally sustainable centre.” The scheme, dubbed Simply Cups began in 2017. It is Australia’s largest cup recycling program and has diverted more than eight million cups from landfill overall, with more than 800,000 cups collected in October 2019 alone. The collected cups are turned into new products such as car park wheel stops, roadside kerbing and recycled furniture. The program is run by Closed Loop and the company’s managing director Robert Pascoe said it was fantastic to be teaming up with CS Square. “Closed Loop is excited to have CS Square join the Simply Cups program,” he said. “We hope that one day all Australian shopping centres will recycle coffee cups. “With early adopters such as CS Square leading the way, we believe we can make coffee cup recycling more common.”

Residents said there was an urgent need to address severe erosion and land degradation of the parks due to the ever-increasing rabbit population. They asked the government to instruct Parks Victoria to assess their management strategy for the issue and to develop a permanent and integrated plan to achieve long-term effective and humane eradication. Late last year Star Weekly revealed the once prominent farm had fallen into a state of disrepair, home to dilapidated buildings, thousands of thistle weeds and plagued by rabbits.

Sunbury line upgrade works to begin Upgrade works to the Sunbury line will step up a gear in March. Tree removal will take place for a temporary construction site between the Melton Highway and Chandos Street as major construction around Watergardens station commences in March. The station is slated for a number of significant upgrades. Works will focus on extending train stabling facilities at Sunbury and Watergardens to fit longer trains, and build additional stabling at Calder Park to house trains and enable more services. It comes after the state government last year announced significant upgrades to the station’s accessibility following a lengthy community push. Six lifts will be installed at the station, which the government said will be bigger, for easier access for passengers using a mobility device, and will have semi-transparent walls for improved safety. They will also include separate power sources to ensure continuous operation and battery power back-up so users won’t be trapped in a blackout. A solitary lift is currently the only way people with disabilities, elderly people, or people who have a child in a pram can gain easy access to the platform. Improved lighting and CCTV coverage will also be included in the upgrade. The upgrades are scheduled for completion by early 2022.

Police have arrested eight males following a spate of thefts from motor vehicles in Kings Park and Albanvale. A credit card stolen from one of the vehicles was later used at a service station and takeaway food outlet in Kings Road, Kings Park. Missing man found Robert Edelsten, a 78-year-old St Albans man who had been missing since early January, has been located safe and well. An alleged marijuana crop-house has been discovered after fire broke out in the garage of a property in Caroline Springs. Authorities were called to the fire on Cleland Way about 6am last Monday. Pop-up inspires plaza By Tate Papworth Work on the long promised civic plaza for St Albans town centre will begin this month. Brimbank council hopes the $1.4 million project will transform a former bus interchange in Alfrieda Street into the centrepiece of the town centre. Mayor Georgina Papafotiou said the civic plaza will be a space for the whole community. “Following the success of the pop-up park set up in mid-2017, and calls from traders and residents for a civic plaza in Alfrieda Street, St Albans, council is thrilled to now offer a permanent solution,” she said. “The result will be a multi-use civic space in the centre of St Albans – providing an area for larger cultural events and a safer space for social gatherings.” The project will include new road surfacing, feature paving on footpaths, large shade trees and garden landscaping. It will also feature seating, picnic tables, better lighting, a safer pedestrian crossing, signage and traffic signals. “The project is a win for residents and ensures that St Albans continues to be a place where people want to live, work and socialise,” Cr Papafotiou said. While traders have been calling for a permanent plaza in Alfrieda Street since 1982, the movement gathered momentum after the bus interchange was relocated to the St Albans railway station as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project in 2015. The council has previously sought government support for the project, but will almost fully fund it through its capital works budget, with $125,000 from the Level Crossing Removal Authority. Work will begin this month and is expected to finish by June.

Council holds green ambitions Brimbank council wants to create a new tree policy and it’s calling on residents to help shape it. The new policy will aim to cover planting and maintenance, pruning, removal, protection, plant health care, and pest contro,l among other things. Mayor Georgina Papafotiou encouraged community members to provide feedback via an online survey. “Our goal is for Brimbank to be a ‘liveable community’ and providing more trees and quality green open spaces that are accessible, cool and well-maintained helps us achieve this goal,” she said. “We recognise that trees help cool our suburbs, shade our paths and streets, beautify our neighbourhoods and add value to neighbouring properties.” She said the policy would aim to lift the municipality’s low tree canopy coverage rate. “There is increasing understanding by our community that expanding our tree canopy cover is one of the best ways to minimise the impacts of extreme heatwaves and the urban heat island effects. “Brimbank has one of the lowest tree canopy covers in Melbourne. Our priority is to increase our city’s tree canopy coverage from 6.2 per cent to 30 per cent by 2046.” The survey closes on Friday, February 21. Ground swap on the cards By Ewen McRae Two local soccer clubs are likely to switch grounds in order to keep up with the growth of the sport in the area. The Westside Strikers, who are based at Brookside Reserve, and the Springhills Soccer Club (Taylors Hill Reserve) will switch homes under a proposal endorsed by Melton council last week to try and meet the future needs of both clubs. Both clubs are supportive of the proposal, however the Sydenham Hillside Cricket Club,

which uses Taylors Hill Recreation Reserve for some of its games, has objected to the switch because it could lose a turf wicket in the future as soccer continues to grow. The council is presently developing a soccer strategy, which officers have flagged could lead to three soccer pitches being created at Taylors Hill Reserve, possibly removing a turf cricket oval. If this happens, the cricket club would have to play games at three different venues. The switch plan comes after the Strikers, who have more than 450 participants, applied

for more changerooms to be added to planned upgrades of the Brookside Reserve pavilion in order to meet future demand at the club. Melton council community services general manager Maurie Heaney told last week’s council meeting the switch was the best outcome.

“I think it’s a win-win overall,” Mr Heaney said. “It does come with some frustration from the cricket club, so there is not 100 per cent agreement, but we’re putting forward what we think is the best option at the minute. “From an officers’ point of view, this proposal would increase participation for football activity, mainly at Brookside … and relieve pressure on the turf oval at Brookside, and it provides more opportunities for soccer.” The council endorsed the ground switch, but added a commitment to retain the two cricket pitches at Taylors Hill Reserve.

Sporting gift for victims Sports clubs in fire-affected communities won’t go without if Keilor East man Michael Gallus has anything to do with it. Mr Gallus, the founder of charitable organisation Footys4All, has established a fundraiser to purchase footballs and netballs for those in need. “A $15 donation buys a ball, the hope is to raise about $4500 to get about 300 balls,” Mr Gallus said. “We’ll evenly distribute footballs and netballs to the clubs that need them most.” First on Mr Gallus’ list is the Buchan Football Netball Club. “Buchan was hit pretty hard by the fires earlier in the year, but fortunately the club was saved. “It’s a good place for the community to work together to get through this tough time. “We’ll be going down on Saturday, March 14 during their match with Kinglake to distribute them.”

He hopes Buchan is the first of many clubs he can help. “There’s Omeo, Swifts Creek and a couple of others in that area that we’d like to help out too,” he said. “Every appeal is a good appeal, this one gives us an opportunity to show the kids people are thinking of them. “Every time they pick up the ball they’ll know people across the state are thinking about them and supporting them to get through.” For more information and to organise a donation, contact michaelggallus@gmail.com Tate Papworth

Pool owners charge an hourly rate for the use of their pool and people wanting to take a dip can search Swimply for pools to rent in their area. Werribee man Heath Venn has signed up to the app to rent his backyard pool out to people seeking relief from the summer heat. “People can come in and relax, just have fun and that’s what it’s all about,” he said. Mr Venn said he and his partner Tori planned to use the funds earned from renting out the pool to upgrade their backyard – he is in

the process of building a fire-pit near the pool. Mr Venn said it made sense for other people to use the pool, when he, Tori and their children were otherwise occupied. “Why let this awesome pool go to waste?” he said. Mr Venn, who charges $40 per hour for his pool, said the only difficulty with Swimply could be if people wanted to book the pool while he and Tori were both at work or away from home. Police are hunting for thieves who struck at a building site over consecutive days in December last year. Two trucks attended the site in North Sunshine about 9am on December 17. A man entered the site and stole a number of items, including a generator, extension lead and a submersible water pump. A second man waited outside the site during the incident. Police said a second burglary was carried out at the site the following morning at about 4am. On the second occasion, thieves covered the intercom, moved the CCTV cameras and stole various tools from the site. Brimbank CIU Detective Senior Constable Madeline Gillard said it was a reminder for tradies to exercise caution with their assets. “Tradespeople work hard for their tools; criminals do not,” Detective Senior Constable

Gillard said. “Opportunistic thieves target items left in clear view and in some unlocked houses, sheds and cars.” Detective Senior Constable Gillard said tradespeople should engrave their tools to help police return them to their rightful owners. “Marking tools with your name is great to identify tools on a worksite, but provides little opportunity to identify the owner should we recover stolen tools,” she said. “Engraving items with V for Victoria, followed by your drivers licence number allows police to easily identify an item’s rightful owner.” Investigators have released images of the trucks and two men who they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries. The Sunshine Salvation Army is celebrating 100 years of serving the community. The Sunshine branch was established in 1920 and officer Colin Reynolds said while the organisation has long been a pillar of the community, there’s been many ups and downs. “One significant part of our history is when our old building in Clarke Street was burned down by arsonists in the ’70s,” he said. “Thankfully we were able to move into our current premises on Devonshire Road relatively quickly.” He said the Salvos now have several “arms” of service in Sunshine including the housing service, the op shop, the employment service, the chaplain and aged care. To mark the centenary the Salvos are holding

a family light entertainment night on Saturday, February 15.. “It’ll be a fun night full of costumes, karaoke, trivia and a whole heap of fun,” Mr Reynolds said. St Albans death: Witness appeal By Tate Papworth Images and CCTV footage have been released as police appeal for information relating to the death of a teenage boy in St Albans last year. Aguer Akech, 17, died after he was assaulted in an altercation at the Keilor Plains railway station in the early hours of December 22, 2019. The footage shows a number of males, aged possibly in their mid to late teens through to early 20s, in the vicinity of the station around the time of the incident. Detective Inspector Tim Day said police were hopeful that by identifying the people

shown in the footage, police could progress the investigation. “At this stage we don’t know if any of the males in the CCTV were involved in the fatal stabbing,” he said. “Because they were in the vicinity of the station at the time of the incident it’s possible that they were part of either group involved, or they may simply be valuable witnesses for our investigation. Either way, it’s crucial that we identify these people and speak to them. “We are keen to hear from anyone who can identify any of the males, or alternatively, we ask any of those people shown in the footage to

come forward and contact police themselves.” Investigators believe the incident is linked to an altercation earlier that weekend at a soccer game at Green Gully Reserve during an all-day tournament. Ten people arrested on the night have all been released pending further inquiries. No one has been charged in relation to the death. Homicide Squad detectives are urging anyone who witnessed or heard any suspicious activity in the area between 11pm on Saturday, December 21 and 2am on Sunday, December 22 to come forward. Celebrate Lake Reserve The multi-million dollar makeover of The Lakes Reserve is complete and the community is invited to celebrate. The $3.34 million project features a new activities and leisure area, an improved playground, better views and more space for picnics. Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou said the Chichester Drive reserve was a jewel in the crown of Taylors Lakes. “Our latest upgrade at The Lakes Reserve has transformed the area into a vibrant, green space for people to relax, play and enjoy more activities,” she said. “This is such an amazing space for Taylors Lakes and for people across Brimbank who travel to enjoy our beautiful parks. ‘It really is a hidden treasure for our community.” The upgrades also include barbecues, large canopy trees, native plants

and shrubs, a half basketball court, a ping pong table, fitness stations, a giant tower with two slides, swing set, balancing beams, trampolines and a large shelter for gatherings and events. To celebrate the completion of works, the council is hosting a free fun day on Thursday, February 27 from 5-7pm where a sausage sizzle and a number of activities are planned. Cr Papafotiou encouraged the community to make use of the park at any time. “Next time you’re looking for something to do, bring the family, invite your friends and enjoy a day out – surrounded by lovely views here at The Lakes Reserve. “Having a healthy, active community is so important to Brimbank. Costing tool for back to school

By Ewen McRae Josh Fikret was just four-years-old when the world of wrestling captured his imagination, and more than two decades later he’s ready to pursue his dream in the big time. Fikret – who goes by the wrestling name JXT (short for Josh Extreme) – will soon head off to the US to showcase his wares for three months, hopeful of getting a contract with one of the big name wrestling organisations. For the Melton man, it’s been a long road to get to this point. “I was four-years-old when my cousin introduced me to WWF Warzone on the Playstation, and from that day forward I said I was going to be a wrestler,” he said. “I love everything about it. I love the emotion it brings out of people, and I think the reason kids cling on to it so much is that life can be stressful, and wrestling is like a movie that can take you away from everything and it’s a bit of an escape from reality. “My folks hated it with a passion in the early days, but once they saw there was no stopping me they let me go.” Fikret had to wait until he was 17 to get his first proper crack at wrestling, but in the past nine years it has taken him all over Australia, as well as to America a few times to compete. In 2018, he did 60 shows in Australia alone, and on February 15, he will have his final bout in Australia before flying out, as part of the Showdown Wrestling event at the Italian Sports Club in Werribee. “You’ve got to put everything in if you want to make it,” Fikret said. “I’m in the gym six days a week, plus wrestling workouts in the ring, and a show every week, so it’s pretty full on, but if you want to be good at it and make a living out of it like

I’m hopeful of doing then you have to commit.” With shows booked in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Alaska, and Florida in the next three months, Fikret has his eyes on the prize. “Hopefully this tour of the United States leads to something bigger, so I’m planning on going out with a bang in Werribee,” Fikret said.

“It’s extremely hard to make it, and even harder as an Australian, but you have to have that belief in yourself if you’re going to succeed in this. “If it doesn’t happen this time, it will still happen. I’m sure of that.” Tickets to the Werribee event can be purchased at https://bit.ly/2O8myhU.

What’s your connection to Brimbank? I moved to Brimbank area after meeting my now wife. Our children were born at Sunshine Hospital and attend the local primary school. What do you like best about the area?

Where to now with the project?

I think the sense of community spirit and cultural diversity is what is best about living in the area. Alfrieda Street is hard to go past with all the great restaurants and fresh food at the markets. Cannot go past a good Banh Mi and Cafe Sua Da at lunchtime.

I am trying to help draw community attention to the flawed option being provided to the community in the hope that Development Victoria will provide the community what is needed.

What could be improved? You were a member of Impact Brimbank until recently. Tell us about your time there, your achievements and why you stepped away.

We need to improve the job opportunities for our youth, given we have one of the highest rates of youth unemployment in metropolitan Melbourne. Also our lack of green space/play areas for all areas of Brimbank needs to be addressed. It would be great if we became a more walkable town which would then in turn help to alleviate some of the chronic illnesses that impact the area and increase community wellness. Tell us about your push for the Stony Creek Transformation Project It all started when I was walking to Ginifer station and there was a sign up warning about asbestos. I phoned our local state MP’s office, Natalie Suleyman, inquiring about the asbestos and if there was any risk to the local primary school, given it was only 150 metres

from the sign. I was told they didn’t know and if concerned, to contact the EPA myself. From there I pushed to find out if the exposed dirt contained asbestos and if it posed any risk to the local community and what was being done to remove/contain it. I then started to inquire with

my local councillors and Natalie Suleyman’s office as to the progress of the Upper Stony Creek Transformation project. Seeing that it had stalled and lack of communication from our elected officials, I assisted with the petition calling for Stony Creek to be finalised and

I helped to provide input on what direction the committee should take regarding initial community consultation and where we want to go. I helped to provide real life examples to our councillors about what it is like to grow up in poverty and pushed for the committee to look at youth social issues and address inequality. Unfortunately I had to choose between the two hats, activism or Impact Brimbank. As much as I wanted to stay on the committee and use my experience of growing up in a family environment affected by drugs, alcohol and poverty, it was made clear I could not do both.

KEILOR GIFT CARNIVAL2020 The much-anticipated Keilor Gift Carnival returns to bring all the excitement of the runners competing for more than $30,000 prize money in a prestigious competition. Before the first race at Joe Brown Reserve on Saturday, the Keilor Bowls Club is staging a barefoot bowls event on Friday night. This promises to be a fun-filled attraction for the entire family – no experience required, just bring enthusiasm. The Keilor Gift itself kicks off at 12.50pm on Saturday with the first of the 70-metre Open Heats, while the 120-metre Women’s Final is the final event of 30 at 8.45pm. A 70-metre Skins invitation race worth $1200 is also on, with entries open on the day. Kids’ activities will rock on throughout the day, which culminates in a spectacular fireworks display. Wood-chopping, with competition for men and women, is a hugely popular event at the Gift. This year, the one to watch is Jason Lentz, who is coming all the way from Diana in West Virginia, USA. His previous achievements include 2018 All-Round World Champion at Lumberjack World Championships; the 2017 title winner at the Sydney Show; and two second places in the Stihl Timbersports series in USA.

SPORT Spinner wreaks havoc against Sunshine Sunshine’s batting card was a scene of devastation on the first day of its top-of-the-table clash with Newport-Digman in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2. The Crows were shredded by some devastating bowling by Bulls spinner Amal Mahathelge to be all out for 147. With the Crows seemingly having laid the foundations for an imposing score, Mahathelge came on to take 7-14 and leave the line-up in tatters. While acknowledging the precision bowling of Mahathelge, Crows captain Troy Stone felt like his batsmen contributed to the carnage. “We started off really well and then we had a massive collapse,” he said. “Their spinner ripped the game apart. “It was some bad shot selection from our group. “He put the ball in the right areas and capitalised on our poor batting.” Sunshine seemed to be coasting after seeing off the new ball. Stone (49) and Sam Magnano (10) combined for 62 for the first wicket and all seemed cruisy.

While Stone was the Crows top scorer, he felt as though he let down his team by not going on to record a bigger score. Same could be said for the other set top order batsmen Usman Quddisi (31) and Asela Aluthge (30).

“One of the top three scorers should’ve gone on to get a 60 or a 70,” Stone said. “I sort of take responsibility for that.” The major concern for Sunshine was the lack of fight from the middle to lower order. The last seven Crows batsmen combined for a 19 runs and the pitch was not exactly a minefield. “The way we crumbled and weren’t willing to fight it out was a bit disappointing,” Stone said. “We lost 8-31, so that’s disappointing.” Stone knows the fabric of Sunshine’s team is stronger than that. He is putting it down to a rare off day and will use it as a valuable learning tool in the lead-up to finals. “I hope it doesn’t repeat itself,” Stone said. “We’ve got enough experienced blokes down the order that we’ll bounce back from it, we’ll learn from it and improve.” Despite the disappointing first day, Sunshine still has a cricket match to win. United fights for survival By Lance Jenkinson Sunshine United will be fighting for its survival in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division on Saturday. If the bottom-of-the-ladder Tigers cannot surpass second-last Strathmore’s 8-184 on the second day at Selwyn Park, it could be a blow significant enough to send it back to the VTCA’s second tier. Tigers batsman Leigh Sheridan is fully aware of the ramifications of a failed run chase. “If we lose this week, we’re staring down the barrel of relegation,” Sheridan said. “Finals is not really a thing for us at the moment, it’s more about survival.” Sunshine United bowled with purpose early in the Strathmore innings. The new ball operators had the Mores in a state of disarray. Tom O’Brien put the squeeze on with a remarkable 1-22 off 21 overs, including 12 maidens. Rhys Dodemaide (2-37) and Nalin Amarathunga (3-37) combined for five wickets. “The three seamers up front were really good with the new ball,” Sheridan said. “They really put the clamps on.” Sunshine United could not deliver the knock-out punch with Strathmore in all sorts of trouble at 7-92. The Tigers were not helped by the pitch conditions, which seemed to flatten out the longer the day wore on. It led to the Mores tail wagging with Chris Williams (25), Samuel Dukic (42no), Daniel Slevison (31) and Tom Stevenson (20no) doubling the total. “The deck flattened right out after tea and it got a lot easier to score,” Sheridan said. “They got away from us a little bit, a few things didn’t go our way, but all in all we were pretty happy with how much we restricted them.” A target of 185 is certainly within reach of Sunshine United, but with the pressure on for both sides, it will make for a fascinating run chase. Elsewhere in senior division, Keilor has made an encouraging start against Haig Fawkner, posting a competitive 283. Kaushal Lokuarachchi starred for the Blues with 94, while Chetan Arjun added 62. Eagles wings clipped in narrow loss League leaders Sunshine lacked the killer instinct in a narrow 5-4 loss to Berwick City in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 on Saturday. The Eagles were made to rue their inability to turn base runners into runs on a frustrating day. Eagles coach Stuart Clayton said the difference between the two sides was Berwick City’s efficiency in the batters box. “We out-hit them 12 to six, but we left 15 runners on base,” he said. “We just didn’t hit the ball when we needed to and it cost us. “Every time they got a runner at second base, they got a hit and they were lucky enough to score from them.” Jeremy Young started on the mound for Sunshine, lasting six innings. Young was not at his best, but the lack of run support did not help, as he left with a 5-1 deficit. “He wasn’t 100 per cent on today, but he pitched well,” Clayton said. Riley Barr worked relief for Sunshine for three scoreless innings. Barr’s tidy work gave the Eagles an opportunity to launch a late comeback. The Eagles managed to get to within one run after scoring three unanswered runs. With bases loaded in the ninth inning, youngster Nikau Pouaka-Grego had the chance to be the hero for the Eagles, but he picked out a fielder with a well struck shot up the middle. “If it goes a foot either side of the fielder, maybe you get a hit and you score a couple of extra runs,” Clayton said. “He’s had that opportunity two or three times for us this year and come through every time. “Today was the only one he didn’t. “He’s been really good for us, he just missed out today.” Jason Tutt, Alister Lovelock and Jordan Young had three hits apiece for Sunshine. Despite the loss, Sunshine is still the team to beat in the competition, sitting comfortably on top of the ladder. Uskok passes his first test with Western United

It was a baptism of fire for Tomi Uskok in his Western United debut. Uskok slotted into a United defence that was battered with shot after shot by the Newcastle Jets attackers last start. The post-game stats showed the Jets had 27 shots to four, but the United defence kept a clean sheet, thanks to its stellar defence, a stand out game by goalkeeper Filip Kurto and a whole lot of luck. Uskok, a former Melbourne Knights and Sydney United player who had played for Central Coast Mariners previously in a brief A-League stint, could be proud of his first-up display for United. While he would not want to be as frequently under the pump as he was against the Jets, Uskok showed he can handle the best of what the A-League has to throw his way. “There were definitely good players out there, physical and aggressive,” Uskok said. “It’s always a challenge playing against different sorts of attributes and different sorts of players.

“They pose another challenge, but, yeah, I’m learning every day.” Uskok, a January transfer window signing, arrived at Western United underdone because he was in the middle of his NPL pre-season training campaign. The 28-year-old still managed to last 74 minutes in oppressive heat before he was subbed out. With a number of key defensive injuries, Uskok’s impact has been much needed and looks to be a handy acquisition. “I guess it’s difficult coming in when everyone’s in-season and full conditioned,” Uskok said. “I’m coming off a pre-season halfway through and probably haven’t played a competitive game for four months, it’s a challenge, but it’s just about working hard and trying to build up to a point where you’re comfortable and the coaching staff are backing me in, so that’s good.” The transition from Sydney to Melbourne was easier for Uskok than most.

Midfielder Anthony Duzel fired in the winning penalty to seal back-to-back Friendship Cup triumphs for the Knights. Newly acquired midfielders Conor McDonald and Mathew Breeze had tongues wagging after their five-star performances for the Knights. Knights football operations manager Mark Ivkovic said the win over Sydney United was a nice culmination to an impressive run of pre-season results that has included a massive win over Heidelberg United and Victorian Cro Cup glory. “Sydney United is a very strong side,” Ivkovic said. “They made the grand final in New South Wales last year and they’ve got about five former A-League players in their line-up. “It’s probably the perfect game to lead into the opening game of the season because it’s good quality opposition and there’s a little bit of bragging rights on the line. “It’s been a perfect dress rehearsal for round one.” Melbourne Knights went into the half-time break a goal to the good. Winger Gian Albano produced a bit of magic to give the Knights a lead. “It was a typical Albano goal,” Ivkovic said. “He was on the wing, beat his player, shot across the box and it came off the post and went in.” It is Albano’s second season with the Melbourne Knights. Albano was a slow starter last season, but he grew in form and confidence the longer the season wore on. “He was from interstate, so it was his first year in Victoria last year and he did start a little bit slow,” Ivkovic said. “The second year in Melbourne, he knows what to expect from Victorian NPL, so hopefully he hits the ground running.” Sydney United found an equaliser early in the second half. Try as they might, neither side could find a winner. It came down to penalties and the Knights were the cooler from the spot. The big development to come out of the game for the Knights was the stellar performances of Breeze and McDonald in the midfield. Breeze, a former Green Gully player, was the “stand out” player on the day in Ivkovic’s mind.

Bowls Robert Doody produced a doozy for Deer Park in its hard-fought 86-78 win over Essendon in the Bowls Victoria premier division on the road at Windy Hill. Doody’s rink hammered Anthony Flapper 31-12 to form the basis of the Parkers’ third consecutive win. James Pearce was the Parkers’ other victorious skip, beating Ryan Tainton 24-18. It is a victory that solidifies the in-form Parkers in third spot on the ladder ahead of a bout with top side Bundoora RSL away on Saturday.

Cricket Taylors Lakes remains alive in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west group finals chase. Every time you consider writing off the Lions, they come up with a win that puts them back in the mix with the finals hunters. In a game against fellow top-six hopefuls Bayswater at Bayswater Oval on Saturday, Taylors Lakes grinded out a gutsy four-wicket win. Set 176 for victory, the Lions passed the target in the 41st over, led by Aamir Raza (48no) and Lachlan Marr (34). Taylors Lakes is just six points outside the top six with two must-win rounds to play.

McDonald, who arrived from Ireland in the pre-season, struggled to adapt to the hot weather conditions in early training sessions. That his impressive display came on a day when the temperature nearly reached 30 degrees is a great sign. Ivkovic believes McDonald will take the NPL by storm this season. “He’s been one of the most important signings that we made,” Ivkovic said.

The major acquisition for Melbourne Knights in the off season was coach Stuart Munro. Munro is a long-time coach at the top level in Australia and has played at some top football clubs, including Rangers in Scotland. “He’s added a lot of professionalism to the club that probably wasn’t there the past couple of years,” Ivkovic said. “He’s exactly what the club needed at this point to go to the level that we want to get to.”
