New Age Wrestling will celebrate its 15th anniversary with a spectacular main event. High-flying cruiserweights, hard-hitting brawlers and the company’s best wrestlers will gather at N.A.W Arena, 27 Talmage Street, Albion this Saturday. The main event is arguably the biggest bout the company has held, with three of its top wrestlers competing for the two biggest titles – the heavyweight championship and the south pacific championship. Wrestler Tass Tokatlidis said it will be a night for the ages. “We’ve never had a bout where the two biggest titles are up for grabs, so it’s a massive main event,” he said. “It’s not just that though, all the matches have meaning. “I’m in a singles event but the stakes are high. 50,000 jobs for Sunshine By Tate Papworth A bold plan to create 50,000 new jobs in Sunshine has been unveiled by former Victorian premier Steve Bracks. The Sunshine – Daring to be Great strategy aims to capitalise on major transport investments coming to the precinct, including the Airport Rail Link. Mr Bracks said the strategy, which has been developed by the West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance (WoMEDA), also aims to take advantage of the area’s existing strengths which include the health, education and manufacturing sectors.

“Sunshine has a chance to build on its proud working history by becoming a major economic, social and transport hub for Melbourne and Victoria,” he said. “Targeting particular sectors such as health, construction, public administration, tourism, retail, manufacturing and care services all make sense for Sunshine. “Construction is one of the most rapidly growing industries in the west, whilst manufacturing is one of the largest employers in Brimbank and still has significant growth. “The presence of Sunshine Hospital and the newly built Joan Kirner Hospital creates a significant opportunity to grow jobs in the
health care sector, and create more leading research collaborations. “Developing a Jobs Institute in Sunshine will also tackle the key challenge of growing jobs outside of our major CBD areas.” Brimbank council recently launched its Transforming Brimbank agenda. Much like the WoMEDA strategy, Transforming Brimbank seeks to leverage and improve opportunities stemming from infrastructure projects across five categories: jobs, education, health, environment and fairness. Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou welcomed the WoMEDA “discussion paper” but didn’t comment on whether both plans
could work together. “Investment and development in Sunshine and more jobs for the area is also a key priority for Brimbank council,” Cr Papafotiou said. “We believe the Super Hub and the development of the wider Sunshine precinct can provide jobs for decades, if not generations to come. “That’s why Brimbank is calling for the creation of a new Business, Jobs and Skills working group, to leverage training and employment opportunities.” Mr Bracks said the WoMEDA vision had been put forward without council consultation. ■ Daring

Braybrook tops home burglary list By Tate Papworth Braybrook has the dubious title of Melbourne’s burglary capital, according to research produced by the RACV. The insurance company’s annual burglary statistics report revealed the burglary rate across the suburb to be one in 39 homes. The number is a sharp increase on last year’s rate, which was one in 52 homes. But it was better news across the municpality. The 3020 postcode, which encompasses Albion, Sunshine, Sunshine North and
Sunshine West, had a drop in burglaries, dropping to one in 64 homes, as opposed to one in 60 last year. There was an even more significant drop in postcode 3021, which includes St Albans, Kealba, Kings Park and Albanvale. Burglary rates for 3021 were one in 62 homes, a drastic drop from the one in 41 last year. RACV general manager, Raymond Orre said there are a number of steps the community can take to lower the risk of burglary. “Until crime rates are at zero, there is still reason for concern and more importantly,

action,” he said. “We found that one in five people surveyed … have sophisticated home security solutions but rarely or never keep them activated or in working order.
“Regular checks and system tests are a simple a way to maintain peace of mind in the home.” He said strong community also plays a big role. “Positively, one in five people already believe that their neighbours look out for them, and in turn, they look out for their neighbours. “Notifying your neighbours when you’re out of the home, asking them to check your mail or put out your bins can be a helpful deterrent for criminals and helps to foster a stronger sense of community.”

The west’s own Jurassic Park see-saws. Stockland project director Ed Krushka said: “This dinosaur-inspired park will be the largest prehistoric-themed residential park space in Victoria, with the custom commissioned dinosaur head sculpture alone being 3.2 metres long.” He said the broader park would also include a 50m x 50m open grass kick-about area, open lawn areas for picnicking and exercising and a large picnic shelter area with barbecue facilities, drinking fountain and banquet-style settings. “The picnic area is sheltered by a custom roof structure inspired by sweeping dinosaur wings,
to tie back to the overall prehistoric/dinosaur theme,” he said. Mr Krushka said the park had been inspired by the history of the site and the nearby Mt Atkinson Conservation Reserve being a dormant volcano. “The Mt Atkinson Conservation Reserve is the main viewpoint from the park, rising up 100 metres, this dormant shield volcano was made from running magma build-up forming a volcanic cone shape in otherwise flat terrain,” he said.

A $1.5 million dinosaur-themed park will be built in the western suburbs next year. Residents of Stockland’s Grandview estate in Truganina, which will eventually become home to more than 1600 properties, will soon be able to see the one hectare park being constructed on Altezze Drive between Healey Drive and Bratan Way. The park is set to feature a climbable dinosaur head sculpture; a multi-storey play tower with dual-level slide arms landing on pads framed with featured claws, a climbable sculptural tail, dinosaur eggs with baby dinosaurs popping out, a flying fox, swings, a matrix climber and

Route 216 runs from Sunshine station to the Melbourne CBD via Dysons Road. It offers more frequent services on Sundays than the old route 210. The changes will mean that route 216 services will run every eight to 10 minutes in peak periods. Route 220 travels between Sunshine station to the CBD via Footscray Road. It also has more passenger services on Sundays than the previous route. Both routes will run every 15 to 20 minutes on Saturdays and every 20 to 30 minutes on Sundays. Meanwhile, the new route 429 will operate between Sunshine South and Sunshine train station with services co-ordinated with trains. Routes 216, 219 and 220 have been split between the city’s western and southern suburbs since mid-2018 due to works on Southbank Boulevard. Member for Footscray Katie Hall said the changes will bolster Brimbank’s public transport system. “These changes will give passengers more options to get around, helping them fi nd it easier to connect with metropolitan and regional trains,” she said. New kerbside recycling contract secured Brimbank Council will enter into a 19-month contract with Cleanaway Pty Ltd for the processing of kerbside recycling from Brimbank households. The contract, which will remain in place until 30 June 2021, means the community now has certainty around the processing of its recyclables, and Council has time to consider long-term recyclables processing for the City. Since entering into an agreement with SKM Receivers, KordaMentha in September this year, all of Brimbank’s kerbside recycling has been back on track – going to a dedicated recycling processing facility.
This new contract with Cleanaway Pty Ltd commenced on 1 December 2019 and gives the community the assurance household recycling will continue to be processed correctly. Council will continue to look at its longer-term recycling options beyond June 2021, through the collective procurement process with the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group. Doctors didn’t expect Callee Petropoulous to ever walk, talk or live beyond the age of 12. But the 24 year-old from Caroline Springs has defied all odds and continues to go from strength-to-strength. Callee’s parents first knew something was wrong when she began to exhibit flu-like symptoms. They took the then one-year-old to hospital where she was diagnosed with Aicardi syndrome, a rare neurological syndrome that predominantly affects females. Callee also has scoliosis, an abnormal cerebellum, shorter limbs and an intellectual delay. Callee’s mum Debbie said much of the early years were a steep learning curve. “When Callee was first diagnosed we had no idea about Aircardi syndrome and spent a lot of time researching and chatting with other families around the world,” she said. “We spent her childhood engaging with early intervention, doctor’s appointments and paediatrician visits.” Debbie says access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has helped improve Callee’s development in recent times. She partakes in regular speech therapy and physiotherapy. “Because of the intensive speech therapy, Callee is now starting to say a couple of words,” Debbie said. “The other day she went to say goodnight to my husband Jim, and she’d normally just put her head on him, but she said ‘bye dad’. “My husband is a ‘blokey bloke’ who doesn’t always show his emotions easily but that day he had tears in his eyes.” Callee also has access to support workers

The Sunshine Post Office is keeping its doors open a little later to help spread the Christmas joy. The office will operate under the extended retail hours of 9am-6pm Monday to Friday and 9am-1pm Saturdays, until December 22. Australia Post general manager post office network David McNamara said the extended trading hours come ahead of what is tipped to be a record-breaking Christmas for the postal giant. “Extended opening times provide our customers greater flexibility to send, and receive, their Christmas gifts and cards,” Mr McNamara said. He said with more people turning to online shopping, services at the post office are in high demand. “The online shopping boom continues, in fact last year Australians spent $27.5 billion online,” he said. “Last Christmas we delivered 40 million parcels in December alone and we’re expecting to exceed that number this year.” Along with extended trading hours, customers also can collect their Christmas gifts at a free 24/7 parcel locker in more than 350 locations across the country, and can track their deliveries online. Brimbank shoppers are being urged to dig deep this festive season to help those doing it tough. Woolworths has launched its OzHarvest Christmas Appeal, which helps to provide a meal for the one in five people in Victoria who have experienced food insecurity in the past 12 months. OzHarvest founder Ronni Kahn said shoppers can make a difference by purchasing a 50 cent dinner plate meal token at the register at any Woolworths store or online. “Going hungry at Christmas is a harsh reality for an increasing number of Victorian residents,” Ms Kahn said. “We are asking generous Woolworths customers to support the OzHarvest
Christmas Appeal, so that we can continue to deliver much-needed food to local charities that support Australians requiring hunger relief.” Recent Foodbank Hunger Report research shows the need for food relief services has increased by 20 per cent over the past year. Over the past two years, the Woolworths OzHarvest Christmas Appeal has raised more than $2 million for OzHarvest, providing four million meals for Australians in need. This year, the aim is to raise another $1 million. Woolworths Supermarkets Victoria state manager, Andrew Hall said everyone can make a difference.

Landfill fire raises health fears By Tate Papworth A fire burning within a waste cell at the Kealba Landfill site is believed to be the source of a “toxic, smokey chemical” smell. Residents have been complaining of the smell for several weeks, causing some to feel ill and others with throat irritation. Last Tuesday night, Barro Group, the operator of the landfill, notified the EPA of a suspected fire within one of the waste cells. The cell had been covered with a thick layer of clay to contain smoke and odour, however it may need to be uncovered to extinguish the fire.

EPA western metropolitan region manager Stephen Lansdell said uncovering the fire could cause further impact on the community. “EPA has been providing advice to the landfill operator on how to respond to the hotspot, as work goes on to either extinguish or cool the hotspot,” he said. “During the operation, some of the clay cover may have to be
opened with earthmoving equipment, which may cause some smoke and odour impacts in surrounding streets.” It has not yet been determined if emergency services will be required and it may take more than a week to extinguish the fire. The Brimbank council has been notified of the issue and has requested safety precautions, including air quality monitors and strategies to prevent pollution spilling into neighbouring waterways. The site is no stranger to controversy and was the subject of a drawn out legal battle before it even opened.
In August 2010, Barro Group riled locals when it first flagged the proposal to turn the old quarry site into a landfill. The proposal received more than 650 objections and was knocked back by the Brimbank council and Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. However the Supreme Court ordered the matter be heard again and VCAT subsequently gave Barro the go-ahead. The landfill is only licensed to accept solid inert wastes, construction and demolition wastes, shredded tyres and cleanfill. The EPA is yet to determine if there are any breaches of the Environment Protection Act.

The countdown to Christmas is on in Caroline Springs, with Santa and his helpers sharing a special breakfast at CS Square this weekend. The big man from the North Pole will also take up residence at the square every day until Christmas Eve for photos at his magical land of Christmas, located outside Target. The breakfast, on Saturday, December 7, will include a live performance from Santa, Rudolph and the Christmas Fairy. Sparing one hour of your time could save a life. It has been two months since Star Weekly partnered with the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) to deliver that message, after it was identified that Melton and Brimbank had higher than average suicide rates. As we wrap up the campaign, NWMPHN chief executive, Adjunct Associate Professor Christopher Carter, said it was important for the community to be open in discussing suicide and mental health, and knowing what to do when friends or family are struggling. “When someone takes their life by suicide, or attempts suicide, the impact ripples out beyond themselves and their loved ones to their whole community,” Mr Carter said. “That’s why our suicide prevention trials are taking a community-led approach to preventing suicide. Everyone has a role to play, and everyone can make a difference – from just a kind word at the right time, to helping someone get the support they need in a crisis. “If we can even save one person from suicide, then all the time and effort we are putting into these suicide prevention trials will be more than worth it.” Part of the campaign called on residents to take up a short online course – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) – which is designed to help people recognise if someone they know is at risk of suicide. The NWMPHN has reported a 300 per cent increase in people taking the course from the first six weeks of the campaign. The QPR website has had more than 500 visits since the campaign started, with 49 people taking the course, while the NWMPHN social media channels have seen the stories
reach more than 7300 people. As part of the campaign, Star Weekly spoke to doctors, psychologists, industry professionals, those with a lived experience of suicide, sporting clubs, and community groups, giving readers a look at the issue from a variety of angles. Lifeline Melbourne suicide prevention co-ordinator Kerry Dawson said the response and feedback from the local community since the start of the campaign had been incredibly positive. “It’s been fantastic to see the impact of the campaign with the Star Weekly, in both building awareness and encouraging local people to learn how to have potentially lifesaving conversations about suicide,” Ms Dawson said. “Since the trial began we have trained over 100 local people, from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and the enthusiasm and engagement has been outstanding. “The immense stigma and taboo that surrounds suicide creates a barrier to having conversations about it, but by creating a safe place to talk and discuss, it frees people up to consider what is possible in keeping their communities safe from suicide. “Our training sessions have focused on recognising when someone might be at risk and then connecting them with immediate help. Sunshine to transform under Former Premier Steve Bracks has unveiled a bold plan to create 50,000 new jobs in Sunshine, capitalising on the major transport investments and the region’s existing strengths. Tate Papworth looks at what it means for the suburb and surrounds. Transport Mr Bracks said it was imperative that transport around the city of Sunshine met the demands of its growing population. While the suburb’s transformation will largely centre around key projects such as the Sunshine super hub and airport rail link, the strategy identifies a number of other key recommendations. It calls for a number of new tram routes to Footscray, Deer Park, Newport and Moonee Ponds. Trams will flow from Sunshine to Footscray (including Footscray Hospital, Highpoint); down Furlong Road and through Cairnlea to Deer Park. They will also link through industrial precincts; Brooklyn, Newport and Altona and to Moonee Ponds. Improved cycling paths and an improved bus network are included to prevent the area becoming a “carpark.”
Law A completely revamped justice precinct forms a key component of the plan. Redevelopment of the court area provides the potential to develop a legal services hub at Sunshine, which would tap into both the expected growth in professional, scientific and technical services as well as public administration and safety. Both are expected to generate significant numbers of new jobs. “I’ve been calling for a while for parts of the Department of Justice to relocate from Melbourne to Sunshine,” Mr Bracks said. “It would make it a real hub, bringing in all

that comes with it, such as contractors and support provisions.” WoMEDA believes it would be possible to locate the Family Violence Agency, the Adult Parole Board, a new research centre into recidivism, and the Department of Corrections to Sunshine.
Education Education will play a major role in driving jobs. Sunshine would have a formidable university and polytechnic presence, an advanced manufacturing centre of excellence, an enterprise park integrating business and research, and a high performing high school.

Sport and culture The strategy identifies a lack of major sporting stadiums in the west and has earmarked Energy Park as an ideal choice for a stadium, aquatic centre or sporting complex. Its strategic location near the Western Ring Road and rail network making it the optimal location, according to the strategy. The National Gallery of Victoria would also have a branch in Sunshine and there would be a picturesque town square in the heart of Sunshine. The plan calls for an expansion of the Sunshine Leisure Centre, however the Brimbank council has earmarked its sister site, the St Albans Leisure Centre, for a $60 million redevelopment.
Health An extra 15,000 jobs in the health and care sectors are planned. In creating jobs, the strategy calls for the Sunshine Hospital zone to be hypercharged developing its reputation for treatment of chronic conditions and attracting complementary medical and research units. Leading neurologist Tissa Wijeratne welcomed the announcement, “The western suburbs caters for people representing just over 165 countries. “Whatever research portfolios we put forward would have impact globally.”

Young guns of business Albanvale Primary School grade five pupils are about to put six weeks of hard work to the test at the Altona Beach Market. The pupils have set up a stall at the market to try and sell products related to health. Grade five teacher Daniel Taylor said it was a great way to show the young entrepreneurs what the world of business is like. “Part of our essential learning is covering business,” he said. “The kids have grabbed it with both hands and run with it. “They’ve been allowed freedom to create products they thought tied in to what we were focusing on health and wellbeing, but it’s also given them experience in cash handling, problem solving and ordering materials.”
Mr Taylor said the stall won’t be short on products. “We did a lot of research into what health actually means and from that they designed their own products. “Some have made terrariums because they decided gardening is beneficial to health, we’ve got bookmarks because of the benefits of reading, photo frames with motivational quotes on them, stress balls and slime, and candles.” “It’s been really great that the kids have been able to watch this go through from design phase to profit,” Mr Taylor said. “They’ll also get to see the profit go to a good cause with new sports equipment to be purchased from the day’s takings.” Tate Papworth

Big boost for Hampshire Road upgrade
By Tate Papworth A neurologist on a mission to make the western suburbs one of the leading research areas in the world has been honoured with an award. Professor Tissa Wijeratne was presented with the Priscilla Kincaid-Smith award by the Australian Medical Association last month. The inaugural award recognises a senior specialist who has contributed above and beyond in patient care, research, education or advocacy. Professor Wijeratne said he didn’t even prepare a speech before the ceremony and was simply honoured to have been recognised. “The firepower of brain is abundant in this state. We have a lot of clever doctors, a lot of clever specialists … so despite the fact that I’ve been working hard, I didn’t think I’d win such a prestigious award,” he said. “I’ve studied Priscilla Kincaid-Smith’s story and she is a special kind of a lady. “To have a tiny person like me attached to her name is something I can’t put words to.” Professor Wijeratne said he hopes the award will provide a further platform for him to continue his mission in promoting brain health. “We should not forget that the brain matters. People are reading this article because they have a functioning brain, but at this time our brains are at a crossroads. “One in three of us are going to get dementia or have a stroke, one in five of us suffer from disabling migraine-type disorders … then there’s a whole variety of other disorders like anxiety, depression, risk of suicide, and addiction. They all have a common theme – they are all driven by brain. “Therefore it is important we promote brain health, initiatives and supporting research

activities.” He also hopes the award can show others that the western suburbs have a lot to offer. “Hopefully the other thing this award will do is show youngsters in this part of the state, that while this part of the state has challenges,

there’s also opportunities unique to this area.” “I’m a firm believer in getting things done. On the western side of the town we face a lot of challenging situations compared to other parts of the state, however I don’t believe in complaining,” he said.
Another $400,000 has been added to the budget for stage three of the Hampshire Road upgrades. The increase is to ensure promised works such as raised planters and water features go ahead as part of the upgrade. Councillor John Hedditch called for the budget increase at a meeting last week during which the contract for works was awarded. Cr Hedditch said the $400,000 was for works agreed on by traders and the community but had been dropped. “This particular piece of work is one that was consulted on widely with the community and with the trader community in particular,” he said. “That consultation was really well received, I think we had a record in terms of the number of people supporting and liking it. “These particular works that are proposed to be added back are things like raised planter walls for grass areas, water features and timber deck areas as they were part of the original consultation, part of the agreement between traders, the community and council.” Stage three will establish a civic green between Bennett Place and Devonshire Road. The council says the civic green will provide a multi-use space in the centre of Sunshine Town Centre for larger cultural events. Ewen McRae

You may have seen our Step up. Speak out. Respect women. decals that were recently unveiled at Caroline Springs and Melton.
Research shows that in Australia, one in three women have experienced violence in their lifetime and that at least one woman is killed by an intimate partner each week.
These decals were installed to help promote the message: We can end violence against women. Be a role model. Step up. Speak out. Respect women. as a way of demonstrating our commitment to both preventing violence against women and promoting gender equality to the community.
This is a truly horrific statistic, and unfortunately, the City of Melton isn’t immune. Council, however, is committed to preventing violence against women before it occurs, which is why we work so hard to create a coordinated, action-based approach to preventing this type of violence in our City.
There’s nothing quite like Christmas carols under the stars to get you in the festive spirit, so gather your family and friends and join us this Saturday for Carols by Candlelight at Hannah Watts Park, for an evening of free family entertainment. Creating a stage for young stars By Tate Papworth A Cairnlea travel agency is helping local artists and those in need achieve their dreams. Dimos Melifrondes and Cyrus Mil of BC & Bling Promotion regularly send local acts overseas to perform on the big stage. Western Travel in Cairnlea has been a long-time sponsor of the event, however this year Mr Melifrondes said things went a little differently. “We actually went in to have a chat about sponsorship for an upcoming event we have in the Philippines,” he said. “We went in for a chat and ended up coming out of it owning the travel agency.” The team is now preparing to send a dozen performers to the Philippines to take part in the Bottoms Up Music Beach Festival. Mr Melifrondes said it was a way to support local acts and the Philippines community. “We’ll be taking all sorts of artists, singers, dancers and DJs over there to really give them the chance to shine on the big stage,” he said. “Afterwards we’ll throw a big dinner for the local orphanage and use a large part of the profits to give each of the kids a gift. “We’re thinking along the lines of nice jackets or shoes this time around. “There’s about 50-100 kids so we want to make sure they’re all looked after.” Mr Melifrondes said local politicians in the Philippines were excited about the event and had been a great help in putting it together. Performers come from a variety of different backgrounds, including Sudanese, Malaysian and Vietnamese. “We give everyone a go. It’s a not for profit thing, we fly the artists out and take care of them as well as the locals.” The music festival will be held in February.

EPA drones detect landfill breach By Ewen McRae The Ravenhall Landfill has been fined by the Environmental Protection Authority, just months after gaining approval for its expansion. The EPA last week issued an $8261 fine to Landfill Operations Pty Ltd, a subsidiary company of waste management firm Cleanaway, after discovering about two-and-a-half times the allowed exposed waste at the Ravenhall site. The landfill, which is already the largest in Victoria, is allowed to have exposed waste with a surface area of 1800 square metres, but was

risk to the surrounding environment and nearby residents. “The licence requires that only 1800 square metres can be exposed, and thanks to our drone technology we were able to detect a clear breach of that limit,” Mr Lansdell said. “The size of a tipping face is an important element for environmental management of a landfill. Allowing such a large area of waste to be exposed only increases the risk of neighbours being impacted by offensive odour, litter, and for the pile to attract birds and pests.” Victoria will have new environment laws
coming into effect on July 1, 2020, which will introduce a general environmental duty requiring businesses and individuals to prevent harm to the environment and human health. The breach follows a decision by the planning minister and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to allow expansion of the Ravenhall landfill, despite objections from residents and both Melton and Brimbank councils. A large part of the objections centred on the impact to nearby residents. The landfill expansion was ticked off in June this year.
Garden with meaning A new indigenous garden at Parkwood Green Primary School is generating plenty of conversation ahead of its official opening next week. The garden, which was designed as part of the Hillside school’s education program on the local indigenous culture and communities, sits behind the school oval, and is 70 metres long, filled with indigenous plants and artworks contributed from all levels of the school. Leading teacher Tania Sorbello said it was great to see the whole school come together to create a lasting legacy. “We wanted a whole school project that honoured the local indigenous community, and brought together our understanding of indigenous culture and people and also our local area,” Ms Sorbello said. “We looked at what plants we would have in there, what fauna we could attract to the garden, and ways we could make this as authentic as
possible, so we’re really happy with the finished product.” The garden features shelters, bug hotels, bird paths, indigenous artwork, painted tiles, a history timeline, and a meeting place. Ms Sorbello said the meeting place was designed to reflect the ongoing journey of the indigenous people and European settlers. “We’ve put the meeting place off centre, which we did deliberately,” she said “The part of the garden before the meeting place is much longer, to acknowledge that our indigenous culture spans much longer than Australian history after European settlement. “It’s been fantastic to see all the students come together to make this happen and learn about Australia’s indigenous history as well.” The garden will be officially opened on December 13. Five-star fire station build begins By Tate Papworth Construction on the largest Metropolitan Fire Brigade station to be built in 30 years has begun in Derrimut. The station, which is set to significantly bolster fire services across the western suburbs, will replace the current fire station at Boundary Road, North Laverton which was built in 1991. Construction began in November and the state-of-the-art facility is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2020. When fully operational, the station will

house up to 16 firefighters and four firefighting appliances. It will also include a workshop, gymnasium, storage room, changerooms, large meeting room, a protective equipment room and a concrete concourse to conduct training drills and community engagement activities, such as
open days. The brigade will also support surrounding emergency service agencies for a range of incidents including motor vehicle accidents, grassland, residential and industrial fires and emergency medical response. Member for Kororoit Marlene Kairouz said the new station will make the community safer. “Firefighters at North Laverton do a fantastic job protecting the community and this new station in Derrimut will give them the space and facilities they need to enhance the area’s emergency response capabilities,” she said.
“We’re supporting our emergency services personnel by giving them what they need to save lives and to protect property.” The $10 million state government funded facility will also be Australasia’s first five-star sustainable fire station on the Green Star rating system. Ms Kairouz said the new station would be a milestone for sustainable design. “This station will be the first five-star sustainable fire station in Australasia and will form the basis of future station builds in Victoria,” she said.
Star hones her craft Holly Tancin is a young soccer star on the rise. The 13-year-old has just been selected to take part in Football Federation Australia’s The National Training Centre (NTC). The NTC is a full-time football training program with a main purpose of preparing players who show potential talent to progress through the FFA development model to achieve Senior NPLW, W-League and international representation. Holly said it was a rigorous selection process, but well worth the commitment. “I had to attend seven trials and go through a tough selection process to earn my place in the squad,” she said. “For me it’s all about achieving new goals and targets in soccer and becoming a better player with other girls of my age.” Holly is no stranger to representative level honours having played in the NPL at Calder in under 13s as a 10 year-old and recently played under 12 boys in the FV competition.
Her future goals are to play overseas professionally and use soccer as a platform to travel. Keilor Downs College Soccer School co-ordinator Josip Loncaric said Holly is well on her way. “Holly is a skillful, hard-working player with a strong team ethic and real desire to help the girls around her improve,” he said. “When she was at primary school last year, she ran little lunchtime coaching sessions to help her friends develop their soccer skills so that they would have a chance at getting into the KDC Soccer School. “She has a great head on her shoulders and is a testament to her parents and family.” Tate Papworth Holly Tancin has been selected for the NTC in 2020. Call for waterway protection By Tate Papworth Brimbank council wants the state government to take a stand in protecting the west’s waterways. The council has called on the government to introduce a “river law� to protect the waterways, their flora, fauna and cultural heritage. The proposal forms a key part of the council’s submission to the government’s “Waterways of the West“ discussion paper – a plan to provide advice on the best way to protect the health of the west’s waterways.
Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou said the west’s waterways have suffered a great deal in recent times and stand alone laws similar to legislation in place for the Yarra River are needed. “The Maribyrnong and Werribee catchments, and Moonee Ponds Creek and catchment, are all at the centre of significant urban development and growth, and have suffered enormously in terms of their ecological, cultural heritage, and recreational values,� Cr Papafotiou said. “Millions of people live in the waterways of the west catchments, with at least a million
more on the way. “The west’s unique landscape includes threatened flora and fauna, and landscapes of international significance. “Climate change will compound issues and challenges and so we need to protect and improve these living river assets to protect and improve the liveability of the west. “Legislation must assist to clarify and codify how collaborative governance and management will be undertaken to deliver on a community vision.� The west’s waterways have been subject to a
number of environmental problems in recent times. In October last year, the EPA issued a public safety warning for a number of Brimbank waterways. The warning followed a preliminary risk assessment of data provided by Melbourne Airport about levels of PFAS at the airport and in surrounding waterways. Stony Creek was also heavily contaminated by chemical run-off from last year’s toxic Tottenham fire and its clean-up and recovery is ongoing.
Winner is all at sea A Burnside Heights girl is spreading the word about the latest offering at SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium. Seven-year-old Chloe has been named as one of the aquarium’s junior jellyfish reporters after she won a competition for children with a keen interest in marine life. In her role, Chloe will share news from the aquarium from a youngster’s perspective. She’ll also share her knowledge and what she’s learnt about jellyfish, something she has a strong passion for. As one of the winning reporters, Chloe also won exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the aquarium, a family platinum merlin annual pass and a $100 prize pack. It comes as the aquarium prepares to launch its Ocean Invaders, a $1.5 million jellyfish exhibit, which will open to the public this month. The sensory experience is spread across
more than 300 square metres and is complete with enormous displays of jellyfish, interactive activities, incredible lighting installations and educational facts about the gelatinous sea creatures. One highlight of the exhibit is the amazing spherical globe, which is filled with swarming jellyfish. Jellyfish species included in the exhibit are lion’s mane, blue blubber, sea nettle, moon and Australian spotted. Ocean Invaders will also educate guests about the causes behind the increasing population – or invasion – of certain species of jellyfish in the oceans and the actions people can take to limit these sometimes problematic population increases. MY BRIMBANK Daniel Sundararaj arrived in Australia in 2000 and quickly fell in love with the western suburbs. He is passionate about helping vulnerable people find jobs, recycling and Christmas music. He spoke with Tate Papworth. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I have lived out west ever since my arrival to Australia in 2000. I really enjoy living in a fairly new estate surrounded by lakes, gardens and other beautiful landscape. What do you like best about the area? It’s a really friendly community with a variety of entertainment facilities, including the main shopping centres such as Watergardens. I’m also very close to public transport and can reach the airport in less than 20 minutes. We’re also within 30 minutes of the Melbourne CBD.
I think we could do with more interaction and engagement with older people and communities. I’d also really like to see more ethnic and multicultural programs. Tell us about the Christmas carols you’re holding. This is our fourth year holding these carols for the community. This year’s program will be held on December 7 at the Banchory Community Hall situated on Banchory Avenue, Hillside. The music will be played by local band It’s All Good. Festivities begin at 3pm and entry is free. All the popular songs will be played, but the lyrics are given to the audience for them to sing along too. You’ve also got a pretty interesting business?

We are a recycling enterprise primarily into recycling of old fire extinguishers. The metals, steel, brass, stainless-steel and chemicals are recycled to make other products. We have a processing facility in Laverton. This facility is the first of its kind in Victoria. Our business is passionate about waste
management and keen to put the old products back into manufacturing. How long have you been recycling? Our business has been in recycling for almost 15 years. We have recycled heavy machinery,
old computers, plastics and chemicals. Our expertise is to find the best option to make use of old products. Our enterprise offers employment to people who cannot communicate in English, mature workers made redundant, refugees and the marginalised.
It’s easy to tune out during rush hour. But it’s good to stay present and be aware of other commuters. We all have a role to play in calling out sexual harassment. Respect women: call it out.

All the rotten land in Sunshine belongs to the government, according to Sunshine, MP, Mr Bill Fogarty. Mr Fogarty said this week that all the eyesores in the district belonged to either the Board of Works, the Housing Commission, VicRail or other government instrumentalities.
A new amalgamation agreement leading to a university for the western suburbs appears to have left an escape clause to allow any of the parties to withdraw if a Labor government is not returned at the next federal election. The agreement, hammered out between RMIT, Footscray Institute of Technology and the Western Institute, provides an option for an institute to withdraw from the proposed amalgamation at any time.
Some Delahey residents are ruing the day the Kings Road extension opened because of safety and noise concerns. One resident, Mr Vlado Galinac, who lives in Wilmot Drive, said several approaches had been made to Brimbank council requesting a higher fence on the back of residential properties as exists at the Copperfield estate and others which are higher than normal.

SPORT Recruitment and youth are keys behind Lions’ rise

Taylors Lakes is reaping the rewards of shrewd recruiting and investment in youth. The Lions have turned from last season’s cellar dwellers to one of this summer’s surprise packets in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. After six rounds, the Lions have far exceeded the points they picked up for the whole 2018-19 season, moving into a top six spot in the east-west group in the process. The Lions hardly had a weak link in Saturday’s 50-run win over Endeavour Hills in a one-day game at Lionheart Reserve. “It was a very good all-round team effort,” Lions captain Jarrod Wakeling said. “Essentially, the batsmen and the bowlers delivered what we’ve been wanting to do all year and that’s be patient and disciplined.” Taylors Lakes powered to 3-201 off its maximum 45 overs. Youngster Lachlan Marr was at the forefront
for the Lions, compiling 60 not out, including six fours and a six. “He was the top scorer and probably our fastest scorer,” Wakeling said. Marr featured in an unbroken 111-run stand that moved Taylors Lakes from 3-90 to its eventual total. The man at the other end, West Indian import Marradon Bend, continued his sparkling form with 48 not out. Bend has been superb for the Lions and is the leading run scorer in the competition with 311 runs at 62.2. “The pitch today wasn’t as easy to bat on as the Taylors Lakes pitch has been the last four or five games,” Wakeling said. “There was a bit of variable bounce – it was a bit low, it was a bit slow, so a lot of the shots we could get away with, like the flashy cover drives and flashy cut shots, just weren’t there. “Bendy, with his innings, he started off quite
slow and was very patient and played very straight. “Then towards the end of the innings, he was hitting sixes for fun.” Earlier in the innings, Michael Brne (22), Marcus Just (24) and Vishesh Bansal (35) gave Taylors Lakes the solid start it needed. All five Lions batsmen displayed qualities that Wakeling had called for at training during the week. “All in all, we were really pleased with the batting,” Wakeling said. “We thought 200, on that pitch today, far exceeded par.” Taylors Lakes managed to take all 10 Endeavour Hills wickets with a bit of breathing room. Honey, it’s worth the wait By Lance Jenkinson Josh Honey is not too fussed to have missed out on the glitz and fanfare that comes with being selected in the AFL national draft. The 18-year-old eventually got his wish of landing on an AFL list on the third day of drafting through the AFL rookie draft. For as long as he can remember, Honey’s dream has been to make it to the AFL and he got there on Friday in no frills style. After two long nights of recruiters not calling out his name, Carlton snapped up the explosive Western Jets forward with pick three in the rookie draft, which is an internet-only affair. There were no TV cameras, no selections read out by AFL chief GIllon McLachlan and no jumper presentations, but that did not bother Honey in the slightest. “It was a childhood dream to play AFL,” Honey said. “It’s a dream come true. “I was pretty nervous, but when I didn’t get called out on Thursday night, I wasn’t too shattered because I knew I had a chance in the rookie draft. “I would’ve liked to have gone in the national
draft, but I still ended up on a list, so I’m just loving the opportunity.” Honey was an AFL player before he even realised. The Keilor product was following the rookie draft selections through the AFL app, but the app was lagging and he missed seeing his name typed out. “I got a call from the list manager at Carlton who said ‘you’re now a Blue’, so that’s how I found out,” Honey said. “I was pretty rapt when that happened.” Carlton actually committed to take Honey on Thursday night after the final selections of the national draft. Honey’s manager was informed but kept it under wraps so not to spoil the surprise. “They called my manager to say they’d pick me the next day but they didn’t tell me that, so I just waited pretty nervously,” Honey said. “He made me wait, so we had a bit of a laugh about it.” It will be a strange first week in the AFL system for Honey. He grew up an ardent Collingwood fan, but will now change allegiances. “I was a huge Collingwood fan,” Honey said.

“It’s going to be tough transitioning, but I’ll get over that. “Carlton is a terrific club.” A serious talent that could be a rookie draft steal, Honey has all the attributes needed to be successful as a mid-sized forward that is more than capable of playing through the midfield. His greatest assets are his ability to stand up in a tackle, his speed out of traffic and his finishing around goal. He is an eager pressure player, too, as his six or more tackles in seven games with the Jets can attest. Landing at Carlton gives Honey a chance to grow with one of the best young and developing lists in the AFL. Meanwhile, the Jets failed to have a player selected at the AFL National Draft for the first time since 2015. The only two Jets landing on AFL lists were chosen through the rookie draft. Sunshine has formed a two-team breakaway with Newport-Digman at the top of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 ladder. It is too early to declare the division as a two-horse race, but these two sides will take some catching in the second half of the season. The Crows are top of the league with 33 points, while Newport-Digman is just three points back. The next best side is St Andrews Pascoe Vale, which is 15 points in arrears of the Crows. Sunshine kept its flawless record intact with victories in both games on a double-header weekend. The Crows had a commanding 72-run win over Kingsville on Saturday and followed up with a cruisy six-wicket victory over Keilor Park on Sunday. Asela Aluthge scored 61 and Ruwan Jayaweera took 5-15 to be the stars in Sunshine’s win over Kingsville, while Altamash Zaheer’s four wickets were crucial in the drubbing of Keilor Park. Iosifidis back in the driver’s seat with Western Eagles

Steve Iosifidis will make his return to coaching with the Western Eagles in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 3. Iosifidis will take on a head coaching position for the first time in three years after working as an assistant coach under Goran Lozanovski at Altona Magic in the National Premier League for the past two seasons. “I think I just missed being in the captain’s seat,” Iosifidis said. “I’m really looking forward to it, I’m up for the challenge.” Iosifidis had a decorated career as a player. Most of his prime was spent with a star-studded South Melbourne in the National Soccer League, winning two titles and featuring in a FIFA Club World Cup. The 45-year-old’s most recent head coaching gig was a successful one with Hoppers Crossing. He took the Reds to a state league 3 title in 2015.
Iosifidis will return to that level to see if he can repeat the dose for the Western Eagles. He is serious about bringing immediate joy to the Eagles fans. “I know they’re a pretty ambitious club and they’re aiming for big things,” Iosifidis said. “We’re on the same page when it comes to aiming for promotion.” Iosifidis is impressed with the set-up at the Western Eagles. He described the playing facilities as “decent” and is impressed with the social club rooms. But all the bells and whistles are pointless if the players do not buy into Iosifidis’s two key pillars. “For me, the non-negotiables are preparation and attitude,” Iosifidis said. “They’re two things that have been instilled in me as a player and I carry that through as a coach.

“Your attitude has to be there from day dot and if it’s not, I’ll find someone who will tick that box. “You can always work with someone with a great attitude, regardless of ability. “I think preparation is big. “I understand we’re playing in state 3, but to get ahead, we have to do those things the opposition isn’t. “I can almost assure you the team is going to give 100 per cent week in, week out and that puts us in pretty good stead for promotion.” Western Eagles will begin their preparations pre-Christmas, but will ramp up the intensity in January. By Lance Jenkinson Western United coach Mark Rudan intends to ride out of the storm. For the first time, United has struck a form slump in the A-League, sliding to a third straight defeat in a 2-0 loss to champions Sydney FC at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday. At the crux of the problem for United is its lack of cutting edge, failing to register a goal during the losing streak despite a bevy of chances. As Rudan points out, it has not been through a lack of enterprise, with United out-shooting their opponents 63-31 over the past three matches. Rudan has steadfastly ruled out any changes to United’s approach while they are creating so many advancements into the opposition penalty area. “Our philosophy is our philosophy and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the way we play,” he said. “We’re not a counter attacking side, that’s not us, that’s not our belief, that’s not my belief, that’s not my style. “We’ll continue to push forward. “I’m also not someone that goes and panics. “The definition of that is changing our formation.” Unlike the previous two weeks when it was its finishing that was the stumbling block for Western United, this time it was its poor final ball into the strikers. The lack of quality was partly due to Sydney FC’s rock solid defence, a lack of patience and quality from the United wingers and a loss of hunger from the front line to present in dangerous positions. United had some chances, but they mostly came when Sydney FC began to sit back and absorb pressure while holding a two-goal advantage. Where was the insatiable appetite from United in the first half? That is a question that Rudan will be asking his team yet again after they trailed at half-time to two Adam Le Fondre goals. “It’s not normal that I sit here and talk about the opposition, but there was one moment in the second half where we broke away and there was something like six or seven blue shirts hounding one of our players to try and win the ball back,” Rudan said. “They’re the champions for a reason and I think that action tells you a lot about that football club and what they’re about. “They threw their body on the line very often. “There were nine blocked shots to zero in the game, so it tells you just how desperate they were in their box as well.” While Rudan will not be changing Western United’s style, he has not ruled out making personnel changes. There are strong calls for attacking midfielder Max Burgess to be brought into the starting line-up after some stellar play as a substitute. “He’s making it harder for me to

According to the manufacturer, comfort is the byword here, with the first Australian outing for Citroen’s all-new Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension developed under the Citroen Advanced Comfort Program. With its roots in the company’s storied history in rallying and endurance events, the all-new PHC system claims to make the all-new C5 Aircross one of the most comfortable cars in the SUV segment. Citroen Australia, says the C5 Aircross, with two variants, Feel and Shine, priced from $39,990 and $43,990, brings Citroen’s modern interpretation of comfort to life. Comfort comes across in more than one way with unrivalled seating and carrying capacity through individual sliding, folding and inclining rear seats and cargo space. Both variants are powered by PSA Groupe’s proven 121 kW, 240 Nm, 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine, mated with a full-fluid, six-speed automatic transmission featuring steering column-mounted paddle shifters. An array of standard comfort, safety and technology features cap off key specifications. On test was the Shine variant.

Proof of the pudding Nothing sums up the excess of Christmas quite like the Christmas pudding. So, you’ve just eaten quite possibly the lushest, longest meal of the year, of course you have to put a full stop to all that with a slab of Christmas pudding marooned in it’s own lake of brandy custard. The Christmas pudding is a living dinosaur – it is quite possibly the only recipe still in regular use from the 17th century. That’s a hell of an achievement, but considering other delicacies of the time included roasted hedgehog and badger ham perhaps not surprising. But what makes a Christmas pudding a Christmas pudding? Traditionally, Christmas pudding is meant to have 13 ingredients symbolising Christ and the 12 apostles. However, the heavy-handed list of spices and booze probably has more to do with the primitive food preservation methods of the time than honouring the last supper’s guest list. Early forbears of the pudding also contained meat as cooks at the time were very keen on mixing sweet and savoury. Sort of like apricot chicken for every meal. Indeed another Christmas staple, mince pies were in fact originally mostly minced meat. 12435188-CG50-19

The only remnant of plum pudding’s meaty history is suet, but even that seems to be fading out of popularity. The pudding’s cooking style has also contributed to its enduring popularity. Cakes are generally cooked in an oven – something only the wealthy could afford back in the day – but Christmas pudding is boiled, a method pretty much anyone could do. Thankfully we have moved on from boiling it in a sheep’s stomach, a development also undoubtedly advancing its long popularity. Another tradition largely gone is studding the pudding with silver coins. Getting a coin in your slice is meant to give you good luck for the rest of the year. Unfortunately, as the silver level in coins dropped it made them unsafe to cook. Now you can buy silver coins and charms specially for puddings. The low-fi version is to poke whatever coins in after the pudding has been cooked. And about its other name – plum pudding – because of course there are no actual plums in plum pudding. From little things ... O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, how on earth did you come to be? It’s one of the most ubiquitous symbols of Christmas but how did the idea of a small pine tree covered in sparkly stuff manage to become such a staple of Christmas. Early origins of the tree are murky, but it’s speculated the Christmas tree began as a pagan custom. Evergreen trees were a symbol of everlasting life as the tree is green all year round. There were a lot of tree worshippers going around Europe before Christianity took hold and evergreen branches were hung for decoration during midwinter festivities. The first record of an actual Christmas tree can be dated back to the 16th century in Alsace (then part of Germany). Rumour has it, Protestant reformer Martin Luther came up with the idea to put candles on them. For a few hundred years the Christmas tree was generally only popular with Luther’s fellow Germans, and even then not all that popular as it was considered a Protestant custom in a country with its fair share of Catholics. The Christmas tree was adopted by the
aristocracy – the celebrities of their day – in the 19th century and thus it gradually spread to become fashionable across Europe’s courts. It arrived in America about the same time, although with limited success due to the Puritan’s general dislike of frivolity. It wasn’t until waves of German immigration flooded the country that they gave up the fight and Christmas trees became a standard. Perhaps the biggest boost was Queen Victoria taking up of the Christmas tree. It started off with small trees decorated with sweets for the children and was essentially isolated to the royal family but a popular illustrated publication of the time put a drawing depicting the royal family making festive around the royal tree. A fashionable precedent was set. Initially the cost kept it a hobby of the rich and its popularity took a beating as a result of antiGerman feelings after WWII, but eventually it trickled down to the middle classes and then became the omnipresent image of Christmas we have today.
