The real fire alert begins now. Towns and shires in CFA District 22 ofﬁcially moved into their Fire Danger Period on October 28 – and stay there until May 1 in 2020 unless otherwise updated. District 22 Operations Manager Tony Owen said low winter rainfall across the Goulburn – from Cobram on the Murray through the high country and down to Benalla – meant the grass and bush were dry. “The ﬁre potential is further increased by Bureau of Meteorology forecasts that the next three months will be drier and warmer than average. “What little rain we have had has given good grass growth on roadsides and unmanaged areas, so we have good fuels in place

with the potential of a busy grassfire season. “While we and our partner agencies are doing everything we can to prepare for the bushfire season, we look to the community to use common sense and take responsibility for preventing fires.” He also urged north-east residents to use the short window of opportunity left before summer arrives to clean up their property if they had not already done so. “Reducing fuel loads now will ensure that if a fire does break out, it has less chance of taking hold or spreading.” Moira Shire is also urging residents to prepare their homes and yards. Shire mayor Libro Mustica said council officers have been

undertaking a rigorous annual program of roadside maintenance and inspections which plays a vital role in preparing for the 2019/20 ﬁre danger period. “We work closely with the CFA, Victoria Police and DELWP to assess levels of risk and co-ordinate our mitigation works. “Our role is to support emergency services in any critical situation and we then share this information with the community through our various communication networks. “We want to ensure that if there is an emergency situation, people are informed and able to leave an affected area quickly and safely.”

Sunshine traders will lobby the Department of Justice and Brimbank council to install CCTV cameras throughout the suburb. The move comes after a string of violent incidents, including a double shooting, in the area. Association president Carson Luk said cameras were wanted for the entire length of Hampshire Road and in surrounding laneways. Two men were shot in the vicinity of Devonshire Road and Hampshire Road in the early hours of November 3. Both were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, but traders have had enough. Sweeney Estate Agents company director Benny Nguyen said he firmly supported the introduction of cameras to the area. His company is located on Hamsphire Road, opposite the scene of last week’s shooting. “I’m 100 per cent on board with the idea,” he said. “I think the Sunshine Business Association has been pushing for cameras since Fiona Warzywoda was stabbed in the middle of the street back in 2014. “Speaking to the police after the recent shooting, I know they also think it’s a good idea.” Mr Luk said the association had changed its position on cameras in recent years. “For a while we thought other things like improved lighting needed to happen before cameras went in, but now … we’ll be putting in an application for cameras when the Department of Justice grants open next year. “Given the size of the area we’re looking to cover, it’s likely that this will actually take a few grants over a number of years. “We’ve had informal conversations with the local police and our councillors and both have supported the idea.” The Sunshine Business Association will have to submit a formal application for grants to the Department of Justice, complete with support from Victoria Police, who need to agree to monitor the camera. However Mr Luk has also called on Brimbank council to step up. “The council are asking how their budget should look going forward. We’ve made it clear that this would be a good investment. “We can apply for all the grants we want, but we’re competing against the state. If we get budget money allocated, that’s something we’re guaranteed.”

Books valued at more than $8000 will fill the shelves of Stevensville Primary School’s library after a special delivery last week. The donation is courtesy of Dymocks’ Children’s Charities library regeneration program and the fundraising efforts of Dymocks bookstore at 234 Collins Street and its customers. Dymocks’ Children’s Charities general manager Evelyn Liu said it was fantastic to see such excitement from the pupils. “The kids are super excited, part of the fun now is getting to pick which book they want to read, then getting to take it home with them,” she said. “Dymocks’ Collins Street [store] managed to raise $4300 which we were able to double. We’re hoping it goes a long way to promoting literacy at the school.” The bookstore raises money through its ‘round up program’, where it rounds every purchase up to the nearest dollar if the customer elects to do so. It also sold a number of small items such as tote bags which contributed to the cause. The aim of the library regeneration program is to promote daily reading for pleasure and help improve literacy skills. Springside school zone backflip By Tate Papworth

However this year, about 20 students were rejected from Springside West because they fall outside of the school zone. Furious parents rallied against the decision, saying it was causing undue anxiety. When questioned, the Education Department told Star Weekly “a small number of parents may have received incorrect advice”. However, late last month a letter sent by the department’s regional director Wendy Timms advised affected parents that the decision had been reversed.

“In light of the changes to Springside College and Springside West Secondary College, the Minister has granted an exemption from the application of the placement policy for families with children in grade 6 at Springside College, who are seeking a place at Springside West Secondary College in 2020,” the letter states. “This coincides with the final phase of Springside College transitioning to a primary school. “Therefore [child’s name] is now eligible to enrol in Year 7 at Springside West in 2020.”

A “bureaucratic bungle” which would have seen up to 20 students from Springside College locked out of their preferred high school next year has been reversed. The education department’s regional director recently notified parents of the backflip after months of anguish. Parent Jasmina Grozdanovska said it’s an enormous relief. “We’re so happy for the kids. They’ve been

with the other students for six or seven years, so to be separated now would have been really stressful,” Ms Grozdanovska said. “The kids are really excited about starting at their new school.” In 2017, the Education Department announced Springside College would transition from a P-9 school to a P-6 school. Parents say they were told that students affected by the change would be accepted into nearby Springside West Secondary College during the three year transition period.

Ms Algie worked as a house cleaner in Toorak into her 80s and many of her customers still keep in contact. She said the secret to a long life is happiness. “You have to laugh, you have to have fun and you have to take things as they come.” These days she’s a proud grandmother of five and a great-grandmother of five. She said she takes great joy in watching them succeed.

A Hillside fisherman has found himself in hot water. Fisheries officers came across the man last month and allege he took more than twice the daily bag limit of 10 calamari. Victorian Fisheries Authority director of education and enforcement Ian Parks said the man was caught as part of a major crackdown on illegal fishing for calamari on the Bellarine Peninsula. “Officers also allegedly watched the man throw back two dead calamari he had previously caught only to replace them with two larger calamari just landed. This is known as ‘high-grading’ and is illegal,” Mr Parks said. “The man then allegedly gave another person a dead calamari by hooking it onto their jig. “Soon after, the Hillside man was intercepted by officers at the Queenscliff boat ramp.” The man’s aluminium boat, estimated to be valued at $6000, calamari and fishing gear were all seized on the spot. The man is expected to be charged on summons with exceeding the calamari catch limit, failing to return unwanted calamari to the water with the least possible harm, and several marine safety offences. Farm fading away

A decade of looking good

By Tate Papworth A once prominent Brimbank attraction is wasting away. Horseshoe Bend Farm was home to cows and pigs. It was a place where the community came together for weekends and birthday parties. These days, it’s home to dilapidated buildings, thousands of thistle weeds and is plagued by rabbits. The farm was closed to the public in 2010, but reopened in 2016 after a six-year battle. Since then, there have been repeated calls by members of the public for the land to be used more prominently. Last year, Parks Victoria chief ranger David Collins told Star Weekly a low-key approach to the park’s reopening was deliberate. “At a meeting in 2016, the community indicated to Parks Victoria they are supportive of plans for a low-key opening of the reserve,” Mr Collins said. “Parks Victoria is also working with community groups on low-key activities that will be suitable for the reserve.” But locals say “low-key” is code for doing nothing. Nigel Silver frequently rides through the area and says it’s gone to ruin. “It’s an absolute disgrace. It’s 26 hectares of wasted land. It’s astounding what’s happened to this. “[It is] something of a post-apocalyptic ghost farm taken over by massive thistles, rabbits, soldier ants and the occasional magpie. Its underlying beauty and potential nonetheless is still there for all to see.” Mr Silver suggested Parks Victoria take immediate action to return the farmhouse to a habitable condition and appoint an on-site farm manager to recover the land from the

The program relies on the support of 1300 trained cosmetic, beauty and hairdressing professionals across Australia who volunteer their time and expertise to help deliver the workshops. The workshops cover a variety of areas such as skin care techniques, make-up tips and advice on headwear including scarf styling and wig selection. Workshops are available to anyone undergoing treatment for any form of cancer. Participants also have the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation. Look Good Feel Better organisers said that during the workshops, friendships and additional support networks are formed that can help during diagnosis and treatment for patients. Man stabbed Police are investigating after a man was stabbed in Deer Park last Tuesday. Imagination, creativity and technology continue to shine through at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College. Each year the school’s auditorium is transformed into an art gallery for the Imagine exhibition, showcasing the work of all the college’s students. The exhibition will run until Thursday and the college’s head of visual arts Jodie Pitruzzello said excitement levels are at fever pitch. “The kids are really excited about having their work on display in a professional exhibition setting,” she said. “This has now been running for over 20 years and it’s a real testament to the culture of the visual arts, design and technology here at

the college how it continues to evolve and be nurtured.“ Ms Pitruzzello said it takes about a week to transform the auditorium into a gallery but the end result offered plenty to see. “It’s work produced by the students throughout the year and it’s amazing to see the changes each year. Something new this year is artwork produced by the year 12 students studying a school-based religion and art subject. They’re mixed media, which is something that also continues to evolve – with new technology and software there’s a lot more digital based and moving based work. “

Driver charged A man who was shot by police in Sunshine after allegedly leading them on a pursuit in a stolen tow truck has been charged. Armed Crime Squad detectives have charged a 35-year-old man with 26 offences, including intentionally and recklessly expose emergency worker to risk by manner of driving. The Footscray West man remains in hospital and has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on January 23. Awards for unsung heroes

By Tate Papworth A round of golf is often considered a relaxing way to spend the afternoon – four rounds in one day is a different matter. Hillside resident Tim Shackle is taking on the 72-hole golf marathon, dubbed The Longest Day, on December 14 and while a little nervous, he said there’s plenty of motivation. “The money raised from the event goes to the Cancer Council, which is a charity I really like,” he said. “My old man passed away in 2016. He was only 58 years-old so I kind of want to get out there and raise awareness around what a fantastic job Cancer Council does.” Mr Shackle was an avid golfer as a teenager, but injury forced him to put the clubs away. “I’ve really only just picked the clubs up again recently,” he said. “I played as a kid and got a nasty back injury as a result of golf, but now I’ve got a new swing that doesn’t hurt, so hopefully I hit it alright and don’t destroy the back.” While wary of his injury, Mr Shackle said he wasn’t sure there was a “right” way to train for such a high endurance event. “I loved golf, obviously it didn’t reciprocate that love and I got a bad injury … It actually got to the point where I was struggling to get out of bed as a 15-16 year-old. “I’ve done some training with some pros and seen a physio, but I’m not really sure what the best way to train for 14 hours of golf is. Six Brimbank community groups and organisations have been recognised for their contribution to the municipality at the second We Are Brimbank awards. The awards were presented at a special ceremony held at the Celebrate Brimbank Community Day in Cairnlea. Winners were named in five categories: The Sunshine Short Film Festival took out the culture, arts and tourism award; The Youth Junction won the Inclusive Brimbank Award; and Scalise Studios won the environment and sustainability award. Other winners included Kontiki Cultural Women Empowerment Inc. and RMCC Volunteers who jointly took out the learning excellence award, while Djerriwarrh Community and Education Services took home the award for employment and enterprises. Mr Truong said gambling has an ability to amplify mental health issues. “The vulnerable get preyed on, there’s a lot of issues that come along with gambling. “A lot of the time we see people using gambling as an escape. “People do it for fun, but it becomes a problem when people rely on it for an escape. Especially pokies when you’re sitting there, you just zone out. “The other side is people can accumulate a lot of debt, then use gambling as a means to recover that debt.” When the debt accumulates, Mr Truong said people can feel trapped. “There’s some people who fall hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt, have to sell their house, and feel stuck. “I think in some cases this leads to people

thinking they’re stuck and one of the ways out is suicide.” Mr Truong said while it can be hard to tell if someone is struggling, there are subtle signs

that can be identified. “A lot of people can hide it very well, but if they’re not spending time with their family, avoid talking about finances or have people

chasing them for debt, it can be a sign that there may be a problem.” Mr Truong, who is heavily involved in the Vietnamese community, said cultural barriers can be hard to break down when mental health issues arise. “Culturally, talking about your emotions isn’t encouraged within families,” he said. “In Vietnam, or migrant families, we have to remember that their struggles are completely different to what we struggle with. Their struggles were worrying about things like getting food on the table … no physical security. Because our parents went through that, they see mental health issues over here and wonder what there is to feel sad about when everything is provided.” He said knowing how to have a conversation can make all the difference. “People use others as venting platforms and if people knew how to help others and where to direct them that would help with prevention. “It doesn’t have to go down a path of issues piling up. People may still be guarded, but if you ask the question it gives them the chance to open up.” The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) has identified Melton and Brimbank as having higher than average suicide rates and it’s calling on the community to help it take action through a short online course – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) – designed to help people recognise if someone they know is at risk of suicide. Keilor market gardeners say they have been left in the dark about the health risks stemming from PFAS contamination to their land. More than 12 months since Melbourne Airport announced PFAS contamination had spread beyond its boundaries and into neighbouring waterways, farmers say the lines of communication have gone quiet. Darren Milburn, a Keilor-based market gardener, said landowners are not getting answers. “Our biggest issue is that we don’t know if we’ve been affected or not,” he said. “Melbourne Airport came to us 12 months ago and told us the Maribyrnong River was contaminated with higher than acceptable levels and that’s 10 years after they stopped using the firefighting foam associated with it. “I’m fifth generation on this land – we irrigated from the river up until the mid 2000s, we swam in it, we fished in it, ate our own produce and had our own chickens, which they say is one of the big things not to do from any contaminated property.” Last month US activist Erin Brockovich threw her support behind what could be the largest class action in Australian history with up to 40,000 people who live on land contaminated by the toxic substance set to sue the federal government. While the action largely revolves around defence bases across the country, Mr Milburn can see a similar thing happening in Brimbank. “We just want peace of mind. If the EPA or Melbourne Airport put their hand up and do some land tests, that would be great,” he said. “If those tests show it’s not at a dangerous level, it puts our minds at ease and if it is, then we can work out how to deal with it – it’s the not knowing.”

Futuristic headsets, robots and laser cutters don’t sound like tools used in your typical high school projects, but Marian College’s recent STEAM showcase was anything but typical. The showcase highlighted student projects throughout the year under the STEAM umbrella of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Marian College community development officer Vicky Casey said the school had enjoyed a lot of success in the area. “In STEAM learning we prioritise the design-thinking process, problem-solving, collaboration, critical and creative thinking, and communication skills, all of which were clearly displayed by our students,” she said. “Projects presented by the students included those selected for the Catholic Education Melbourne STEM MAD (make a difference) Showcase. “In 2019, a team of year 7 students were successful in winning the Secondary Contribution to Wellbeing Award for designing an App to deliver safe, effective sanitary products to girls and women living in poverty.” Ms Casey said it was nice to be able to showcase the student’s projects to the Marian College community. Cr Georgina Papafotiou was elected mayor at a special council meeting last Wednesday, defeating Cr Virginia Tachos six votes to five. She said advocacy around a number of large projects would remain a priority under her leadership.

The agenda is bold, but clear.” She said a commitment to collaborate with all levels of government and stakeholders around projects such as the Sunshine Super Hub and the airport rail link would continue to ensure Brimbank realises its full potential. “Investment such as the airport rail link and the north west city deal will accelerate growth and create jobs,” Cr Papafotiou said. “Over the next 12 months I plan on focusing

on continued advocacy and building on relationships with all levels of government, stakeholders and sponsors. “We are here to represent what is best for our people in our community.” While advocacy is high on the agenda, the new mayor said she couldn’t wait to see work begin on the council’s “signature project”, the St Albans Leisure Centre. “I can’t think of a more exciting time to be mayor,” she said. “Next year we will fi nally replace the tired, much-loved St Albans Leisure Centre and commence work on our new health and wellbeing centre. “We will continue to seek government funding and partnerships as this is our signature project for our term of office.” Cr Papafotiou will serve as mayor until next year’s council elections, which will be held on Saturday, October 24. Fifty years and going strong By Tate Papworth A fondness for fish and chips marked the beginning of a long and happy love story. Sydenham couple Wendy Despott and Alfred “Fred” Despott met in 1967. Wendy was working at a fish and chip shop, and loyal customer Fred, would come in regularly for lunch. Fred worked up the courage to ask Wendy out – they married two years later at Our Lady’s church on Ballarat Road in Maidstone. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on October 18 with family and friends. Wendy said the couple have stayed in the west their entire married life. “We lived in a flat in Footscray for a year, then we shifted into our first home in Deer Park and lived there for 23 years,” she said. “Following that we brought a new home in Sydenham and we’ve been here 25 years.” Wendy said the secret to a long and happy marriage is support and fun. “The secret to our marriage is that we’ve always been there for each other. “My advice to others is – don’t take each other for granted, support each other, laugh together and don’t take life too seriously. Have fun.” While they’ve shared a life together, Wendy said they’ve both also enjoyed their own interests. “I was a house wife and Fred worked in the Printing Ink industry for 50 years until he retired. “But we also had shared interests – we both love the football and have followed the Western Bulldogs all our lives. “Fred also enjoyed other sports, he played soccer for awhile and I used to do

a lot of knitting.” These days the couple are dedicated parents and grandparents. “Our main love now is being there for our children and grandchildren,” Wendy said. “We have three children – two girls and one boy – and seven grandchildren who range from 18 to one year-old.”

Rev heads tear up the track By Tate Papworth A record crowd gathered at the Keilor Off Road Remote Control Car Club last week for the off road 1/10th Australian Championships. Club secretary Christina Munday said despite rainy weather, it was an event enjoyed by all. “The two-wheel drive event went ahead, but unfortunately the truck and four-wheel drive events were rained out,” she said. “It was spectacular to see, we had about 140 people attend, I’ve never seen the track so packed.” About 230 entries from around the country were received for the event. Ms Munday said the club’s new track layout proved fast and challenging. And while Mother Nature added to the challenge with very hot and windy conditions during practice sessions and the two-wheel drive day, there was still some quality racing. Defending champion Chris Sturdy took out the 2WD modified class, while Andrew Selvaggi took out the 2WD 17.5 class national title. The state titles will be fought out at the venue next year.

A platform for the west By Tate Papworth Three performing arts teachers have banded together to create a musical theatre company for the west. Platform Studio Productions was formed after teachers Damian Alexander Bernardo, Cailin Debrincat and Natasha Mateus identified a gap in the market. “We’ve worked in the industry for many years, I’ve been in it nearly 20 years all across the country and even overseas,” Mr Bernardo said.

“The three of us have worked together on projects for schools and youth groups over the years and really love working together. We share a passion and thought why not combine for this. “There are lots of opportunities for kids in the west when it comes to performing arts, but what there isn’t a lot of is shows, so we thought why not put one on?” Ms Mateus said the call-out for students will go far and wide. “Students who love to sing, dance and act have no outlet to perform and be creative unless they are in a school environment,” Ms Mateus said. “We would like to ensure that as many young people as possible can benefit from this opportunity to build their performance skills, techniques and abilities.” The group will be holding its first show, In The Heights in March next year.

Mr Bernardo said rehearsals will begin shortly. “In The Heights isn’t a show a lot of schools do and we wanted to provide a new opportunity,” he said. “If anyone is interested in auditioning, all they need to do is email

The pupils wrote, illustrated and published Mrs Balil’s Brilliant Boots with help from international bestselling author Emma Bowd, as part of Ardoch’s Writer in Residence program. The program allows children to work with a professional writer to identify story ideas, build characters, pen their stories and put together a book. The book is professionally designed and printed for each child to take home a copy. Bowd has been involved in the program since its inception in 2016 and said it was a joy to spend time in Albion. “I really look forward to term three each year now, to see what amazing children I’m teamed up with. “It’s my hope that … their enthusiasm for reading and writing will also soar, along with their confidence in learning.” Tate Papworth

Our next soccer stars Keilor Downs College’s soccer school program is like no other and it’s starting to show results. The school is celebrating a double achievement after two girls were part of the School Sports Victoria state squad which competed at the recent national titles and 14 boys were selected to represent the school at an international tournament against the likes of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona next year. Keilor Downs College Soccer School co-ordinator Josip Loncaric said both achievements were a feather in the school’s cap. “This program is all about giving kids a chance to train in a positive learning environment with qualified coaches and teachers. It’s a six-year, long-term development journey where they learn about the game.”

He said year 10 students Amel Fehmi and Aliah Sejovia, who went to the School Sports Victoria national titles, were the embodiment of what the program was all about. “They’re two really good girls. They’ve been there since the start of program and really bought into the culture. “I think they thought being younger girls that they were making up numbers, but they got a heap of game time so the coach saw something in them.” Now it’s over to the boys to showcase what they have against the best in the world. “Hopefully after the boys can come back and … pass on their information.”

Fun, foam and the great outdoors By Ewen McRae Myrniong is set to come alive with colour and fun next month, as the hugely successful Foam Fest returns to St Anne’s Vineyard. The event – one of the largest fun runs in Canada – made its Australian debut last summer after hitting 30 cities worldwide. It’s Australian leg will kick off again on November 30. Up to 5000 participants daily are expected at each location to take on 22 obstacles including the world’s largest inflatable water slide, bouncy castles, mud pits and cargo climb, and more than 2.5 million cubic feet of all natural foam.

MY BRIMBANK Candace Colaco was sick and tired of seeing rubbish on the side of the road, so she started her own project to clean Brimbank’s streets. She spoke with Tate Papworth. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I’ve been a resident here my whole life. I lived in Sydenham as a child and then we moved to Taylors Lakes. It’s all familiar to me – the people, the neighbours, the parks. It’s part of who I am. What do you like best about the area? I love the community feel. We have such a great community and I feel like I’ve been able to know more of it in recent times. Getting to know the mayor and council has been great, it’s nice to know there’s others out there that think the same as you and are there to help out. What could be improved?

I think we could get youth more involved with the council. I’m not talking about the really young ones, I know there’s programs for them, but for teens and young adults. I think it would really help make people more aware about what’s going on in the community. Tell us about the Little Litter Project? It’s a not for profit organisation I started to raise awareness about litter and waste management. It’s about letting people know how they can reduce their waste. How’s the organisation grown over the past year? I think the issue itself has become a bigger thing. We’ve just seen the ban on single use

plastic bags come in and we’ve had more people take notice of the issue since the waste management crisis. For me, I’ve slowly started talking to schools, so I’ll be doing some talks very soon and instead of doing solo clean-ups, I’ve started organising group events with different age groups.

And you were recently recognised at the We Are Brimbank Awards? It was such a great thing to receive an honourable mention in the environment and sustainability category. It was amazing to get to know the council a bit and to get to go to the

Transforming Brimbank launch at Parliament House. I got to meet politicians and other members of the community and really expand my network. After doing so much research on the council and other waste management strategies, working for the council is something I’d really love to do.

A proposed $200,000 Footscray nursing home has been described as an “irrational development“ by Sunshine Council’s social worker for ageing, Mrs. Razija Nu’ man. SPORT Falcons women start to focus on results Caroline Springs has made rapid improvement this season and a grand final berth could be on the cards in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket north-west B T20 competition. Last season the Falcons were focused on learning the game and having some fun. With a season under their belts, the Falcons this season are looking to get results, and it has paid off – the Falcons are on top of the ladder with two rounds remaining in the competition. The top two teams will play off in the grand final. Falcons coach Troy Blackman said the success they’ve had this season was a bit of a surprise. “They came together well and won two games last year and weren’t far away in a few others,” he said. “The improvement is out of sight and it’s starting to show in the results. We’ve got a bit more depth this year. “The thing about women’s cricket, the

improvement is unbelievably quick. It’s out-stripped anything I’ve seen.” Blackman said they had managed to keep most of last season’s squad together and added a couple of other players. Alisha Fowler, in her first season, has made a couple of 40s and has shown natural ability. Shelly Carton, who coaches one of the junior girls sides, has also started playing. Blackman said they had a real mix in the side. “We’ve got six girls 16 or under and five who are 40 or over,” he said. “There’s mums who have kids playing at the club, they have learnt a lot.” They lost Carol Blackman to an achilles injury. She has taken on the team manager role. Troy Blackman said the core group of young players had helped them this season. Many had played cricket for a number of years in junior sides. He said it was especially evident in the bowling, as they don’t concede as many extras

as some bowlers. Among the young players is Ameila Sevior, who has been picked for Western Spirit. With such a good start to the season, Blackman said they were focused on making the grand final. “We’re aiming for it now,” he said. “It’s a different mindset to last year where we wanted to give everyone a good go. This year we’re going in for the kill a bit more to win a few games.” Despite the improvement, the Falcons will only compete in the T20 competition and give the one-day competition a miss for a second straight year. With heavy rain during the week, the VSDCA committee made the decision on Friday night to cancel the weekend’s matches. Taylors Lakes was due to play Box Hill in a one-dayer at Box Hill. The Lions have completed just one match this season, back in round one, due to wet weather.

VTCA Cricketers finally got on the park in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association on Sunday. While Saturday’s matches were postponed due to rain, cricketers were finally able to take to the park for a round of one-dayers on Sunday. United’s sweet victory By Lance Jenkinson Western United produced a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers to send a message to the contenders in the A-League at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night. It was a case of home sweet home for United, who celebrated victory on home soil for the first time with their previous two wins coming on the road. United coach Mark Rudan was impressed with the brand of football displayed by his team on a chilly night in Geelong, but also delighted with the never-say-die attitude of the players, who won after trailing for the second consecutive week. “It was a big win and thoroughly deserved, I must say,” Rudan said. “We’ve done it again, showed true test of character, once again resilience and once again we stayed true to our principles of play. “I thought it was a much more comprehensive performance [compared to last week] and we thoroughly deserved to win tonight against a side that was top of the table before the round started, so really pleased with them.”

Western United thrived in a back-to-the-wall situation again. Another slow start for United saw them trailing after a Mitchell Duke goal five minutes in. The slow starts for United have been a source of frustration for Rudan, who admits it is a concern. Another speed bump for Western United was a hamstring injury to experienced playmaker Panagiotis Kone. The severity of Kone’s injury is to be revealed, but he will be a big loss to the team. “It’s a hamstring and we’re always very cautious,” Rudan said. In between Duke’s goal for Western Sydney and Kone’s injury, Western United found an equaliser through an unlikely source. United central defender Andrew Durante rose at the far post to score a crisply timed goal with a header from a delightful Alessandro Diamanti corner in the 13th minute. It was a rare goal for Durante – his first in five years in the A-League. “I didn’t even know the last time I scored a goal,” Durante said. “It’s great to not only get on the scoresheet,

but to level the game for the team was fantastic.” With Kone off, Western United had to go to plan B. Rudan re-shuffled his line-up, moving Connor Chapman to defensive midfield and bringing on Aaron Calver to play in defence. Both moves worked a treat as United took a stranglehold over the game. Chapman impressed with his ability to both defend assertively and apply a quick counter. His transition into the midfield after playing the first month of the season as a defender was seamless. Western United’s winning goal came in the 58th minute through Kwabena Appiah-Kubi. United defender Ersan Gulum scuffed his shot, but it turned into an assist when Appiah-Kubi gathered the ball, turned and powered his shot past Wanderers goalkeeper Daniel Lopar. Western United has a headache at the selection table ahead of Saturday night’s clash with Newcastle Jets at GMHBA Stadium. Besart Berisha is likely to return to the line-up after he was rested for the Wanderers game, but will Appiah-Kubi return to the bench after a strong outing?

It was a mixed weekend for teams in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association George Luscombe Shield. With rain around, only two matches were completed. Burnside Springs lost to Buckley Park, which had a day out with the bat. Buckley Park made 6-291 from its overs, before restricting Burnside Springs to 9-166. Kealba-Green Gully made 9-213 against Pascoe Vale Central. Pascoe Vale was 3-115 when the game ended, with the teams sharing the points. In the other matches, Preston Druids beat Aberfeldie St Johns, while there was no play between Northern Lions and Darebin Chargers.

Sunshine Eagles fall for the first time this season Sunshine Eagles suffered their first loss of the Baseball Victoria men’s division 1 season, losing a thriller to Geelong Baycats. In tricky conditions with a gale blowing in Geelong, the match was decided in the eighth inning when the Baycats hit the winning run to win 6-5. Eagles coach Stuart Clayton said it was a frustrating game. He said considering the weather, the Baycats had done a sensational job to get the ground ready to play on. “We matched it with them in the batting, it came down to giving them a couple of untimely runs. “It was one of those games where we were in front and then they were in front and then we were and then they were and then scores were level. “They got a lucky hit to win the game. They got a hit and we put in a couple of players to try and induce a double play and keep the game alive.

“[But] it was a walk off in the end. A tight loss.” Riley Barr did a massive amount of work, pitching 95 pitches across eight innings. Clayton said that Barr did a good job of keeping Geelong in check, especially with it blowing a gale. Of the batters, Jason Tutt and Jordan Young both had three hits each for the Eagles. Despite dropping their first game of the season, Clayton said there wasn’t much to be concerned about. Had a couple things gone their way, they could quite easily have won. He said this was the start of a tough run of matches. “The next four to five games will sort out where we are sitting,” he said. “We play two quality sides.” The Eagles have the chance for revenge against Geelong in game two and three of their three game series this week. They play in Geelong again on Tuesday,

before playing in Sunshine on Saturday. Saturday will be a big day for the club, as it hosts its past players day. Clayton said it was a pretty special day for the club, which is 81 years old. He said hopefully they had a bit of luck with the weather, with some sunshine to get more people down. “The past players come down and we put on some beers and they support the boys. “The last couple of years, we’ve had 50 to 60 come down with their families and support the boys. There’s been some good turnouts the last couple of years. “I’ve been here for 37 years, so it’s good to see some of the guys I played with.” There will also be kids activities. By Lance Jenkinson It has been such a hectic and rewarding season for Deer Park taekwondo sensation Reba Stewart that she has not had a moment to truly reflect on her great achievements in 2019. With sport and study for year 12 exams, there has been little downtime for the hard-working Stewart. When reading a list of some of her achievements on the taekwondo mat, including gold medals at the Australian Open, Oceania Championships and Pacific Games, Stewart finally realises how far she has come in the sport. “It is a bit surreal,” Stewart said. “It’s been such a hectic year, I haven’t had a lot of time to stop and reflect. “I haven’t been in this sport for a very long time, but the amount that I’ve done in the short amount of time, I feel like I’m really doing well at the moment.” Stewart’s moment of arrival on the world stage came at this year’s world championships in Manchester. The 18-year-old was staring down the world’s best taekwondo players and more than held her

own. A top 16 finish was an incredible result for a teenager facing competitors upwards of 10 years older with more experience. “I think that was definitely my highlight of the year,” Stewart said. “It was in Manchester and it was a really big comp with so many different countries. “The atmosphere there was a lot different from all of the other competitions. “It was the world championships – it’s one of the highest comps you can be at.” Stewart took so much learning out of the worlds. “The way they fight, you just know how much training, effort and time they put into becoming the best athletes in the world,” Stewart said. “I came up against a ranked No. 2 in the world.” Stewart was primed to perform her best at the competition. A training camp in Jordan leading up had her in a strong mental and physical state. “I came up against a 26-year-old woman,” she said. “I’m in the heavyweight category, plus-73 kilos, so there’s some big girls. “I really liked how I performed. “It was the best preparation I’ve done for a

competition beforehand.” Now that she has mixed it with the best taekwondo players in the world, the sky is the limit for Stewart. Her dream of one day representing Australia at an Olympics is a step closer. “Fighting them, you’re on the stage with them, so you feel like you belong there,” Stewart said. “You’re on the same mat as them, so I know that I can become the best that I can be as well. “I can become top 10 in the world, top five in the world, or I could be No. 1 one day.” Stewart trains under coach Jerry Moraitis at Hall’s Taekwondo in Tullamarine. She has just completed her year 12 studies at Maribyrnong College. Stewart is the November nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Stewart will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club to assist her in achieving her sports goals.

Deer Park has closed the gap on the top two teams in Bowls Victoria pennant premier division, after upsetting second side Bundoora RSL. With the teams sitting second and third after five rounds, it was a good challenge with both sides looking to be in contention. The match, though, would be a one-sided affair, with Deer Park winning 77 (17)-56 (1). Shane Fordham and Brett Mahoney both had big wins for Deer Park respectively over Nathan Murray and Gary Kelly. Fordham had a seven shot win, while Mahoney had the biggest win of the day, beating Kelly 18-9. James Pearce also had a win for Deer Park, beating Luke Aiello, 20-15. Brett Spurr and Bundoora young gun Josh Corless shared the points, finishing 19 apiece. Deer Park remains in third spot, but is now only seven points behind Bundoora. Both sides have four wins out of six matches. Altona is the runaway leader at this stage, 20 points ahead of Bundoora and 27 points clear of Deer Park. In other results, Essendon beat Yarraville-Footscray by one shot in a thriller, Altona smashed Caulfield Park Alma and Clayton beat Mentone. There was no play between Lilydale and Melbourne with the two teams getting five points each. There is a competition-wide bye this weekend with the Victorian Open being held in Shepparton. Fires can travel at 25km/h, making them impossible to outrun. A change in wind direction can alter their trajectory in seconds and they move twice as fast uphill on a slope of just 10 degrees. Burning embers can spread bushfires up to 40km ahead of the fire front, starting dangerous new spot fires in seconds. Rural grassfires can be just as dangerous as bushfires, travelling faster and starting earlier due to grass drying out more quickly.

When the rating reaches Extreme or above, leaving high-risk bushﬁre areas the night before or early in the day is your safest option.
