Festival of sports A Caroline Springs school is putting a new twist on the traditional sports day. Christ the Priest Primary School is hosting a “sports expo”, with representatives from local clubs across 12 different sports offering information for pupils. There will also be a practical component where those interested can try their hand at a sport. Christ the Priest Primary School physical education and sports director Aron Lombardi said the idea was to make it easier for pupils to sign up for a sport of their choice. Representatives from football, rugby, soccer, tennis, golf, baseball, basketball and hockey clubs will be in attendance on the day. They’ll be joined by local cricket, athletics, netball and lawn bowls clubs and representatives from the Western Bulldogs and the newly formed A League club Western United. “The buy-in from the clubs has been absolutely phenomenal,” Mr Lombardi said. “The kids are really excited, but we were surprised at just how strong the interest was from local clubs. “Hopefully they all walk away with some new players.” Tate Papworth

Transforming Brimbank By Tate Papworth A who’s who of the west gathered at Parliament House last Thursday for the launch of the 2020 Transforming Brimbank agenda. The agenda highlights Brimbank council’s key requests for the record infrastructure investment coming to the municipality. It seeks to leverage and improve opportunities across five categories: jobs, education, health, environment and fairness. Melbourne Airport, Victoria University, Western Health, Melbourne Airport CommUnity Plus and a host of others were represented at the launch. Outgoing mayor Lucinda Congreve said

all levels of government and key players in the non-government sector needed to work together to ensure Brimbank realises its potential. “We want to create education and employment pathways that boost the local economy and we want facilities and services, and a clean and green environment that all help to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for our local community,” Cr Congreve said. “The North West City Deal, Sunshine Super Hub, Sunshine Priority Precinct, Western Rail Plan including the $10 billion

Melbourne Airport Rail, the $2.1 billion Sunbury Line Upgrade – are mega city-shaping and changing projects. “These projects have unprecedented potential to create positive, long lasting change in our community.” Cr Congreve said the announcement of the Sunshine super hub has already stirred interest from investors. “Since the announcement … we’ve had a significant increase in interest from developers in our city. “We’ve had development plans come

through for multiple commercial office towers, residential apartment towers, hotel venues and entertainment complexes.” While jobs and education are a heavy focus of the agenda, sports and recreation also feature prominently. Brimbank is one of five municipalities in the running to become the home of Australia’s female soccer side, the Matildas and the council insists work on the $60 million St Albans Health and Wellbeing Hub will begin next year. Good Shepherd Australia and New Zealand and CommUnity Plus Services were both named as tenant partners for the wellbeing hub during the agenda launch.

Vietnamese dig deep for hospital By Tate Papworth Brimbank’s Vietnamese community has raised more than $300,000 to bolster the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Over a six-month period, the Vietnamese Community Appeal, led by the Quang Minh Temple in Braybrook, raised the funds for the newly opened hospital. The funds have gone towards the purchase of a neonatal intensive care transport cot to provide for the safe transfer of sick and premature babies to the hospital’s Neonatal

Hospital divisional director Adelle Mollo said they’re a significant investment. “Having a newborn baby in intensive care is a parent’s worst nightmare,” she said. “They feel fearful and powerless and often their babies will be hospitalised for weeks or even months, making it difficult for parents and family to always be by their sides. “These new cameras can help to make parents’ time away from their newborns a little less stressful, by providing on-demand, live streaming of their baby direct from the neonatal cot. It also provides remote viewing

for extended family members, especially those that live interstate or overseas.” Western Health and the Western Health Foundation honoured the Vietnamese community’s contribution with a special celebration last month, during which a commemorative plaque was unveiled. The plaque will be installed at the entrance to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Since it was opened on September 15, 2019, the unit has cared for 26 babies. Western Health says about half of these would previously have been transferred to another service.

The annual Poppy Appeal is well underway and Sunshine RSL is calling on the community to dig deep this Remembrance Day. Sunshine RSL president Garry Collins said all proceeds help to raise much-needed funds to support veterans. “By purchasing a poppy, you are not only remembering those who have served in the past, but you are also helping to support those who are still serving today, as 100 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of every poppy goes towards supporting service men, women and their families in times of need,” he said. Volunteers will be out in force selling poppies at shopping malls, the RSL and prominent stores including Woolworths and Officeworks. RSL Victoria state president, Dr Robert Webster said every donation to the appeal contributes to helping the RSL support veterans and their families. “For example, the funds raised by the sale of a single $10 Poppy Appeal pin may go towards the purchase of a mobility scooter for an elderly veteran, pay for a young veteran’s crisis accommodation, and support health and wellbeing programs for veterans throughout Victoria,” Dr Webster said. “You should feel proud when you wear the red poppy, as your donation will have helped to change a veteran’s life,” he said. Resurrection Primary School pupils will strut the catwalk on Thursday night, showcasing a number of creative designs. The year 6 pupils from the Kings Park school have been working away on their masterpieces, which will be showcased at the school at 6pm. Year 6 classroom teacher Matthew Galea said the school had pulled out all stops for the event. “We’ve hired out a runway, we’ll have background music for when they walk, the lot,” he said. “They’ve selected their own materials, learned how to sew, apply makeup, use garage band to have background music … everything. “We’ve really put a lot of effort into this to make it as real as we possibly can.” The central theme is to showcase how inspiration can drive creativity. The school went on excursions to the Whitehouse Institute of Design and attended Melbourne Fashion Week and pupils were then asked to create their own designs based on something that inspired them on the excursions. “The buy-in has been incredible,” Mr Galea said. “ The amount of times they’ve asked if they can take it home and the level of engagement has been great. “We’ve been able to take a step back and watch the process.”

Plenty going for Burnside: Study By Ewen McRae Burnside is set for a property boom, according to two new reports into housing and liveability in Victoria. The suburb, which is part of one of the fastest growing regions in the state, is predicted to have Victoria’s second highest percentage of residential properties listed for sale in the next six months, according to a report from Westpac. The report looked at elements such as property type, accumulated equity, and tenure

in home, overlaid with local market data such as turnover, average time on market and listing sales prices to determine which suburbs were likely to have higher listings. Pakenham was the top suburb on the list, with Burnside coming in second. Nearby Caroline Springs (3rd) and Taylors Hill (5th) also placed highly on the list. Westpac general manager of home ownership Will Ranken said areas with high supply were likely to generate higher listings and sales in the next six months. “We know that lack of supply is a top concern

for home buyers navigating the current market,” Mr Ranken said. “Despite some favourable conditions for buyers, like record-low interest rates, low stock has made it tricky for some to find the right home. “Our model indicates that certain areas have higher than average tenure and accumulated equity, where longer-term homeowners who have been wanting to sell and move may decide that now is the time.” The Westpac report follows another study from People Choice Credit Union, which identified Burnside as one of the most

affordable and liveable suburbs in the state. The study said Burnside ranked seventh in the state for liveability, but had better affordability of housing than other suburbs on the list which pushed its ranking up to fifth overall, the best performing suburb in the west. Burnside has a median house price of $590,000. People’s Choice chief executive Steve Laidlaw said liveability played a big part in home buyers’ decisions of where to purchase. “Liveability can mean very different things depending on who you are talking to, so we look at a broad range of factors,” he said.

Kung Fu Pigs wins big Pupils from St Albans’ Sacred Heart Primary School stole the show at one of the country’s biggest performing arts events for schools. More than 280 schools and 20,000 students from across the country took part in this year’s Wakakirri story-dance challenge and it was the school from St Albans that caught the eye. Performing for the first time at Wakakirri, Sacred Heart took home the award for best adapted story for its performance of Kung Fu Pigs. The year five pupils based their performance on Corey Rosen Schwartz’s children’s book, The 3 Ninja Pigs. As part of the competition, each school develops a story-dance, a three to seven minute production which involves telling a story through dance and drama. The stories are performed in professional theatres in front of an official judging panel who are searching for the story of the year.

More than one million people watch Wakakirri performances each year. In a taste of what it takes to make it in the big time, students spend show day rehearsing and meeting students from other schools. Then on the night of the performance, they walk the red carpet and perform on the big stage. Wakakirri is a cross-section of the topics concerning today’s youth. This year a quarter of schools chose to share stories about the environment. Others shared stories centred around mental health, technology and uniquely Australian issues. Tate Papworth

Albion aggravated burglary

Three people who assaulted a person with weapons during an aggravated burglary in Albion are being sought by police. Investigators have been told three offenders entered a Lawson Drive house about 9pm on September 27 and assaulted the victim before stealing a mobile phone and credit card. Friends for everyone The world’s most famous and loved superheroes descended on Brimbank shopping centre last month for a spot of tea and plenty of fun. The heroes normally spend their time fighting crime, but on this day, they were supporting something even more important – inclusion for kids. Friend In Me, an organisation established in 2016 to promote social inclusion and spreading kindness, hosted the event. The organisation’s founder Louise Larkin said it’s about ensuring no child is left behind. “This came about after I heard about Logan, a little boy never invited to parties due to his disabilities,” she said. “We wanted to make sure no child is ever left behind so we came up with Friend In Me.

A suspicious fire in a Braybrook garage was swiftly brought under control by firefighters last week. Crews were deployed to the Kenneth Street address at 6pm on Saturday, October 28 and were able to contain the blaze to a shed at the rear of a property. Police are investigating.

Louise Kerr* has seen first-hand the impact an attempted suicide can have on a family. In September 2018, her daughter Kim* first attempted to take her own life following sustained bullying at her school and some personal issues with her dad. “I didn’t personally see what I would have thought of as obvious signs,” she said. “She was just to me a typical moody teenager, just hormonal and that’s what I thought. “She had moments where she would have outbursts and was sad, but the day that she attempted she seemed really happy. We went out to lunch and had a good day, but later that day I told her she should call her dad, which I now realise was a trigger. “I was at home at the time and that was lucky.” After a brief stint in the Royal Children’s Hospital, Kim returned home. Louise said the recovery had been an ongoing process. “When we got home I put in a lot of strategies,” Louise said. “I put up pictures and posters around the house telling her how beautiful she was, and pointing out how much good stuff there was in her life. “Her school, which were a bit frustrating to deal with at first, have been fantastic, going above and beyond to help her. “She also got a lot of support from friends, my friends, family, and one thing she said not long after that was ‘I didn’t realise how many people loved me.’ “It was hard for her afterwards, but it’s something we’re always working on. One thing we did for awhile was getting her to tell me something good from the day, or something great in the world, or something that made her laugh, so that way she would know there was

had been the biggest lesson she had taken from the past year. “I keep saying I’m a lucky parent, because I’ve got her,” she said. “Others aren’t as lucky. And I’m a big advocate for talking about it and having an open conversation about mental health. I don’t think it should be taboo. “Some people see it as a cry for attention, well I’d rather answer a cry for attention than go to their funeral. “All it can take sometimes is a phone call to see how someone is going, or just a simple ‘how are you?’and that can make all the difference.” And while she is always on alert, Louise said she was staying positive for the future. “She’s [Kim] in a pretty good space at the moment, and the good thing is she is talking about the future,” Louise said. “Just things like ‘when I’m older’ or ‘in the future’, so she’s talking that there’s something past today. “We know that it is there in the background, but at the same time we don’t want to live with that and we want to concentrate on the future and if it pops it’s ugly head up then we’ll deal with it. “Now it’s about keeping the communication open … I think that’s important for all families.”

helps, and our pets especially,” she said. “She’s got a cat that she loves, and she snuggles up with our dog every night, can’t sleep without it. “And she’s recently got a boxing bag, so that’s another way for her to get her frustrations out.” Louise said opening up and talking with others who have experienced similar struggles

New mayor of Melton By Ewen McRae Councillor Lara Carli is the new mayor of Melton, after holding off a strong challenge from incumbent Bob Turner at last week’s mayoral election. Cr Carli, who has served as deputy mayor for the past 12 months, will hold the role for the final year of this council’s term ahead of next year’s council election. Three candidates were nominated for mayor: Cr Carli, Cr Goran Kesic, and departing mayor Cr Bob Turner. Cr Kesic was eliminated from contention after the first round of voting, with Cr Carli eventually winning the position five votes to four. With her family in the gallery, Cr Carli said she was honoured to be elected to lead the council for the next year. .“I thank my fellow councillors for placing their trust in me, and I look forward to serving my mayoral term with a high standard of integrity, transparency and accountability, and to ensure we act responsibly in meeting the needs of our community,” Cr Carli said. “These are exciting and challenging times for us in the City of Melton, and I am grateful to have the privilege to lead this strong and committed team moving forward. “We as a community face many challenges. Cr Abboushi was elected by a single vote. Cr Abboushi thanked his fellow councillors, council officers and his family for their support as he accepted the position.

A little bit of magic is about to hit Ravenhall, with a high-stakes tournament of the world’s first trading card game about to be staged. A ‘Magic: the Gathering’ tournament will be held next month at Pro Gamers and Collectables, with the winner to receive automatic entry to a major tournament in Japan and the shot at a $40,000 prize. Magic, one of the most popular games in the world, involves players battling their opponent with cards depicting spells or attacks. Tournament organiser Emanuel Cachia said it had a broad appeal to its many players. “It will be a high level tournament,” Mr Cachia said. “It’s the biggest card game that we do, and the biggest in the world. It’s the one that kicked off all the card games 25 years ago

so there’s a big following. “It’s quite a complex game, with a lot of problem solving, maths, communication, and there’s something like 100,000 different cards that can be used, so almost unlimited ways to play the game.” The winner of the Ravenhall tournament will receive entry to the tournament in Japan, along with $1000 prizemoney to cover flights. The winner of the Japan tournament gets to attend a world championship, with prizemoney of up to $400,000. “Our tournament will likely go for about nine hours, and competitors will face at least seven opponents,” Mr Cachia said. Mayor reflects on year of change By Tate Papworth

Councillor Lucinda Congreve isn’t one for the pomp and ceremony that comes with being mayor, but she says there’s a sense of sadness about vacating the chair. Brimbank council will elect a new mayor on Wednesday night, bringing a close to Cr Congreve’s term. “I’ve had the time of my life, this is the best job in the world,” Cr Congreve said. “It is such a privilege to be able to stand up and represent your community and lead the council.” She said a change in the council’s approach to advocacy was one of her main accomplishments in the top job.

“I didn’t want to be a ceremonial mayor … I’ve been out there and done a lot of community engagement, but I think the value I’ve brought to the role is behind closed doors,” she said. “For me, advocacy was my big issue. We hadn’t had a lot of success in that area and I thought we could change the way that we did things. “It was more about changing it from going out and asking cap in hand for things, to really making a strategic approach focusing on how we advocate, why are we advocating and who are we going to, then tailoring the message to that person.” The removal of the notorious Deer Park level crossings, the Save Stony Creek campaign

and the designation of Sunshine as a priority precinct were key advocacy achievements Cr Congreve said she was most proud of. While her time as mayor is coming to an end, she says she’s looking forward to finding her voice again during debate. “For me, as mayor, one of the most frustrating things is that I’m not allowed to participate in debate at the council meetings … for me, I lost a bit of my voice in that regard,” she said. “I can’t wait to get back and to be able to participate in debate because for me there’s lots I’d like to say. “That’s really the worst thing about being in the chair, not being able to put your opinion forward.”

Jam sessions for Sunshine The Sunshine Street band will get feet tapping at Sunshine’s RT Pollard Gardens. The band will be holding two outdoor jam sessions run by professional musicians and band member Peter Hinton encouraged people of all abilities to join in. “The idea behind these two jam sessions is to get people off the couch and into the beautiful Pollard Gardens to play some music,“ he said. “It’s for people of all ages and all abilities, it’s just about having some fun and playing music.“ Katie Fowler, the leader of the Sunshine Street Band, will head up the first jam session on November 16 from 1-3pm. “Katie’s session will be full street band and all acoustic,“ Mr Hinton said. “There will be all types of instruments available, people are welcome to … use one of ours or bring their own.” Details: Peter, 0413 623 683 Tate Papworth

Hampshire Road upgrades continue The transformation of Sunshine’s Hampshire road has taken another step forward with the introduction of on-road separated bike lanes – a first for Brimbank. The upgrades also include new traffic signals at the intersection of Hampshire and Foundry roads, new footpaths, street lighting, soft landscaping and the installation of raised pedestrian crossings. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the $1.66 million project will improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in the heart of Sunshine. “The significant improvements at the Ballarat Road end of Hampshire Road are transforming this area into an attractive, well-planned space that is easy to negotiate,“ she said. “We’ve also added on-road separated bike lanes – a first for Brimbank. Sunshine Council had more than $768,000 in unpaid rates, sanitary and interest charges outstanding at the end of the financial year on September 30. The exact figure of $768,562 represents 8.2 per cent of the total rates and charges raised during 1978-79.

Western United striker Besart Berisha underlined what a derby victory would mean to his club in an impassioned plea to teammates in the huddle before they went out to battle against his former club Melbourne Victory in the A-League on Saturday night. Berisha’s words were most important because they deflected a week of build-up largely revolving around his first game back against the Victory – a club where he will go down as one of the greats – to the us against them mentality United took into the local derby. In footage released on Western United’s social media accounts, Berisha said: “Boys, it’s an important game, not for me, but for us. This is the game every football player wants to play in. This is the games every football player wants to win.” It was clear this was a game for Western United that was far bigger than the individual storylines. This was all about making a strong impression against a Victory team that has ruled this city since the A-League’s inception. Max Burgess came on as a substitute in the

midfield for Western United and savoured every moment of his side’s 3-2 upset win. “It was one of those special moments as a player,” Burgess said. “Definitely for the club as well, it was a special night. “Obviously a big derby and hopefully the start of something special in terms of that rivalry.” The quality of the match and the high drama of Western United’s comeback win will spark a rivalry between the two tribes. “To come back from two-nil down was really gutsy,” he said. “It showed a lot of character and I think everyone saw that with the way we celebrated together at the final whistle.” A pocket of Western United fans donning the striking green and black merchandise never stopped chanting or waving their flags for the full 90 minutes. Burgess said the away supporters provided great contagious energy. “We love their support as players,“ he said. “There’s that real connection with the fans

Derby delight for Western United By Lance Jenkinson Western United has stunned local rivals Melbourne Victory, scoring the last three goals of their inaugural derby to win 3-2 in the A-League at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. It was the first time in Victory’s 15-year history that it has lost a game when holding a two-goal lead. United stormed to victory on the back of two first half goals, the first a doozy from Alessandro Diamanti and the second an own goal from Victory defender James Donachie, and a second half match-winner from Scott McDonald. United coach Mark Rudan said “it’s up there” with the most special wins of his coaching career. “Two-nil down, away from home, through our own mistakes, we gave them two goals and they punished us for that, but we were courageous, they kept on playing, they kept on doing the things that we worked on and the team we want to be as well, and you get rewarded for it,” Rudan said. “It’s persistence, it’s courage, it’s a belief in our principles of play, so I’m really happy for them. “It’s a testament to what we’re building as a football club.” Western United could not have envisaged a worse start to the match. The first 10 minutes were dominated by the Victory and plagued with United defensive errors. Andrew Durante, usually safe with the ball at his feet for Western United, produced a loose pass that was broken up by Victory defender Leigh Broxham in the lead-up to Victory’s first goal. Broxham pounced to move the ball to Kristijan Dobras, who found Victory captain Ola Toivonen poised and ready to unleash powerful long range strike for a goal. A minute later, Connor Chapman carelessly turned the ball over for Western United. On this occasion, Toivonen re-paid the favour, assisting Dobras on a goal to make it 2-0 to Victory after just seven minutes. Western United started to clean up its act after the Dobras goal. Indeed, they enjoyed a sustained period of pressure that led to Italian superstar Alessandro Diamanti halving the deficit in the 16th minute. McDonald built up the attacking move for United, shifting the Victory defence out of

position, but his cross was only half cleared by a defender and straight to the feet of Diamanti, who dragged United back into the game with a powerfully struck goal for United from outside the box. It was a crucial moment in the game. “It was important that we got that first one,” Rudan said. “Football is a very funny game, if they had’ve got the third one, it would’ve been a different story, but they didn’t. “We showed a lot of character.” Western United was the dominant team for the remainder of the first half. Their reward came through a bit of luck in the form of an equalising own goal from Donachie. McDonald again did most of the build-up work to the goal and served up a delightful cross to Josh Risdon. Risdon redirected the ball with a header back into the box and a lunging United striker Besart Berisha did everything but get his boot on the ball, but missed the tap in. Berisha’s former teammate Donachie came to his aid, accidentally putting the ball into his own net. Fittingly, the 50th minute winner for Western United came from McDonald. McDonald feigned to go inboard, but jinked back to shoot with his right boot and a deflection off Broxham saw the ball sail into the top corner away from Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas. Rudan was reticent to praise any one individual after the win, but conceded McDonald was a stand out. “He put his hand up, he stood up, but a lot of other players did as well,” Rudan said. “These big games, the big players stand up and create the big moments.” Rudan is adamant the win on the road over Melbourne Victory is worth more to Western United than three points. This game will be a reference point for his side for the remainder of the season and a moment to savour for the fans. “This will be a game, I believe, in 10 or 15 years time that we can look back on as a football club and it’s quite a defining moment as far as I’m concerned,” Rudan said. “They should get a lot of confidence from that because we can come to a place like this and be 2-0 down after a matter of minutes and turn it around.” Western United will square off with title contenders Western Sydney Wanderers in a blockbuster at GHMBA Stadium in Geelong from 7.30pm on Saturday night.

By Lance Jenkinson Bad light was good news for Sunshine Eagles in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1. In one of the quirks of the mid-week rules at grounds without sufficient lighting, the umpires can call a halt to play if the light is deemed poor and too dangerous for players. In the event of bad light stopping play halfway through an inning, the first half of that inning is null and void and the game score entering that inning stands. Luck was on Sunshineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side as the beneficiary of this rule in their local derby clash with Newport Rams at Barclay Reserve on Tuesday night. The Eagles led 3-0 most of the way, but a three-run spot from the Rams had scores locked at 3-3. Then umpires called the game off without the inning able to be completed, so the game reverted back to the pre-inning score and the Eagles clinched a 3-0 win. It was a huge result for the top-of-the-table Eagles, as it extended their winning streak to six. Eagles coach Stuart Clayton admitted it was not the way his side wanted to win the game. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a hollow feeling,â&#x20AC;? Clayton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the end of the game, the boys were a bit flat. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We controlled the game all night, but it was only the last 15 minutes where it started getting dark and we made a couple of errors and got them back into the game.â&#x20AC;? Clayton said the decision by the umpires to pull the pin was unavoidable. The third game of the series on Saturday was a washout. Sunshine claimed two of the three games of the series. The Eagles will now prepare for the toughest period in their season, taking on last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grand finalists Geelong and Blackburn in consecutive series.
