Determined to fight MND By Tate Papworth In May 2017, Robbie Caliste’s life was turned upside down. The fiercely independent 34-year-old from Derrimut was diagnosed with the insidious Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Determined to continue to live his own life, Robbie continued to live in the house he shared with friends. But as the disease progressed and he started losing some functions he had many falls, and was forced to move back to his family home with father John, mother Michelle and brother Paul. With the move came many

challenges, including coming to terms with the amount of invasive care that he would receive from his family as his full-time carers. His father John said that as the family has struggled to come to terms with the disease, the support of MND Victoria had been enormous. “One of the biggest helps to us all has been MND Victoria, who are the only organisation
delivering care and support to people living with MND. “Their motto is ‘Until there’s a cure, there’s care’ and MND Victoria provided information and helped us connect with services and particularly as the disease progressed, they provided Robbie with amazing equipment that really changed our lives,” said John. So far, Robbie has been provided with a regular wheelchair and then a power wheelchair, an over table for bed, a trolley table, an electric lift, strap lifter and a high back chair used for the dinner table. He has also been provided with other
equipment that helps in the shower and with toileting, a walking frame on wheels, a buzzer for help and pressure pillows for his wheelchair. “This has made all the difference to Robbie still being able to live at home independently, enjoy time with our family and our friends and to still be connected in the community, all at no cost to us,” said John. In a bid to give back, John will head up “Team Robbie” and take part in the 16th annual Walk to D’Feet MND. The walk will be held at Princes Park in Carlton at 10am on Sunday, November 17 and is an easy 3.5kilometre flat walk which is wheelchair and pram friendly.

Glass recycling hits the road By Tate Papworth Recycled glass will soon be put to use in Brimbank’s roads. The Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) has been awarded a $200,000 grant to trial recycled crushed glass in asphalt on local roads. The ARRB says more than 250,000 tonnes of glass is recovered from households and business in Victoria every year. It says that using finely crushed glass in road pavement materials has the potential to create
viable markets for the vast amounts of glass collected in Victoria, especially that which is low-value and not easily recycled back into other glass products. ARRB project lead Dr James Grenfell said the concept offered great opportunities for councils, especially in helping deal with the current recycling crisis. “The other exciting aspect is the engagement with a local city council and to have the ability to monitor a field trial for an extended period of time,” said Dr Grenfell. “The collaboration with local government
is what we want to get so we can help local government use the waste stream for their road rehabilitation schemes.” Brimbank council and VicRoads are both partners in the project which is being funded by Sustainability Victoria. Sustainability Victoria’s interim chief executive Carl Muller said it’s a golden opportunity. “It’s all part of Victoria’s growing circular economy – we need proven recycled content products and markets for those products to make recycling viable,” Mr Muller said.
Chefs return to cook up a storm
“This will build confidence and market demand.” Brimbank council is currently negotiating a new kerbside recycling agreement and assessing its long-term options. In previous months, it’s declared a state of climate emergency and resolved to investigate methods to introduce a more circular economy. The grant is one of nine that Sustainability Victoria has issued under its research, development and demonstration grants program. Other grants are also for projects involving e-waste, plastic and paper.
Call-out for Red Cross volunteers
Two former Masterchef contestants from the western suburbs will reunite for one of the country’s largest cooking events. Sydenham’s Anushka Zargaryan and Altona’s Walleed Rasheed will share a tent at the Cake, Bake and Sweets show as they endeavour to keep their culinary dreams alive post Masterchef. Anushka will be serving her honey cake, which became a signature dish and wowed the judges on the hit tv show. She hopes it proves as popular with the public. “I’ve got two flavours now, the original honey and chocolate,” she said. “I’m hoping it will generate enough interest at the show to manufacture it.” Walleed was known to many before Masterchef through his business, the Fresh Prince of Baklava, which trades from Kensington and South Melbourne markets. He said the business has grown since his television appearance, and the Cake, Bake and Sweets show is another step forward. “I began this business about four years ago. I still work corporate, but because of my love of food, I wanted to do something, so I launched Fresh Prince of Baklava.” With Anushka launching her product and Walleed already having an established base, the duo decided it was the perfect time to collaborate. “We’re doing our own products, but we’re going to share a tent, share the love and help each other get through it,” Anushka said. Walleed said: “Being able to promote our brands together makes it a lot stronger and I’m hoping that with the little presence I have, I can help Anushka grow hers too.” The Cake, Bake and Sweets show will be held from November 29 – December 1 at the Melbourne Convention and exhibition Centre. The Red Cross is calling for Brimbank volunteers to take up a leading role in supporting emergency relief efforts this summer. With summer fast approaching, Red Cross manager emergency services Kate Siebert said volunteers were in demand. “Australia is prone to a range of natural disasters and emergencies – from bushfires and floods to cyclones – and every year thousands of people across the country are affected in some way,” Ms Siebert said. “Here at home in Victoria, people turn to the Red Cross for assistance in a disaster. During such times, our volunteers provide those affected with much-needed emotional and practical support. “With drier than average conditions, hotter temperatures and increased fire danger, Red Cross is ramping up efforts and recruiting teams of volunteers to help communities before, during and after emergencies. “There’s a range of roles available for volunteeers. “Whether you’re someone who wants to help local people in the aftermath of an emergency, or take a lead role in managing a team of volunteers and even representing Red Cross at important community meetings, we encourage you to apply,” Ms Siebert said. Funding call for new green plans By Tate Papworth Brimbank council is urging the state government to dip into its sustainability fund and support initiatives for a greener economy. Cr Kim Truong tabled a motion at the council’s October meeting calling on the government to help support the implementation of a circular economy at a local level. “Council needs to support its residents and local businesses to move towards a circular economy and could do this by preparing a local action plan that outlines local opportunities

and initiatives,” Cr Truong said. A circular economy is an economic system focused on reducing waste and increasing the recycling of limited resources. Brimbank mayor, Cr Lucinda Congreve said a healthy economy needs to be greener and circular economy initiatives would be a step in
the right direction. “There is increasing understanding by our community that we live beyond our planet’s means and that our rates of consumption are unsustainable. “A circular economy approach puts forward principles that attempt to ensure resources are used efficiently for as long as possible and minimise waste,” Cr Congreve said. The sustainability fund accrues money through the Victorian Municipal and Industrial Landfill Levy. As of June 30, 2018 the total money accrued
was $511 million. Cr Truong requested a portion of that money to be assigned and suggested a number of initiatives to advance the concept including prioritising the management of organic waste, supporting the development of businesses that use circular economy principles and improving source separation of waste. Other initiatives included recycling and advocating for increased product stewardship. The council will write to Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosia requesting funds to be allocated to local government.
Finding beauty within The Miss World beauty pageant is seen as one of the most prestigious crowns for beauty queens across the globe, but for Kings Park’s Demi Djemal it’s all about personal growth. After battles with anxiety and low self esteem, Ms Djemal says she’s come through the other side and entering the pageant was a giant leap forward. “When I was younger I felt very insecure about myself, I had low self esteem and this developed into anxiety and mild depression. It was a real struggle, but I always pushed myself to keep going. “This started to turn around early last year. My boyfriend helped me a lot, he helped me see my worth. “So I took up a place in a modelling school, The Australian Academy of Modelling and things went from there.” Ms Djemal completed the 11-week course, which involved runway walks, photoshoots
and much more. By the end of it she says her self confidence had turned around and she jumped at the chance to compete in the Miss World Pageant. She progressed through the preliminary final earlier this month and into the state final, which will be held next April. “Lots of preparation went into it – we had to find our dresses and everything, it was a real inner learning experience,” Ms Djemal said. “You really had to identify who you were as a person, your values and go on stage and rock who you are. “But for me the main thing was to go and have fun. Bomb hoax

A 45-year-old Derrimut man has been charged with making a bomb hoax, threats to damage property, attempting to traffick a drug of dependence and possessing a drug of dependence. Police were called to a licensed premises in Caroline Springs on the morning of October 23 after reports a man was making threats. The man allegedly left an item resembling an old army ordinance device at the premises. He then attended another licensed venue where he was arrested by police.

Funds for our veterans For many ex-servicemen and women, the TPI (Totally and Permanently Incapacitated) group is a place to spend time with others who have lived similar experiences. It’s a safe space where returned servicemen and women can meet, enjoy a drink, an afternoon activity or a meal. At the group’s recent meeting it was all about giving back – members raised $500 to donate to Cam’s Cause, a not-for-profit which seeks to honour the life of Corporal Cameron Baird, who was shot dead during a battle to take an insurgent-held compound in the village of Ghawchak, in Afghanistan’s Khod Valley. One of the organisation’s primary objectives is to raise funds to assist with soldier welfare.

A man has died following a house fire in Braybrook last week. Crews were called to a South Road address just after 10.30pm on Sunday, October 20, following reports of a large amount of smoke coming from the house. Firefighters entered the property and found the body of a man inside. They were unable to revive him. The fire was brought under control in less than 15 minutes. Police are investigating.

It’s not always easy to tell when a loved one is struggling, but picking up on subtle changes in behaviour could save a life. Northwest Psychological Services psychologist Liana Borg said that while people considering suicide don’t always indicate their thoughts, there are a number of behavioural changes to look for. “The biggest thing to look for is any drastic changes in behaviour,” she said. “This can be a certain level of withdrawal from family or friends or it can be the complete opposite – catching up with people they haven’t seen in a while.” While there are signs to look for, Ms Borg said it’s not always the case. “I really want to stress that there are not always signs that someone is suicidal. I think when people are very determined to attempt suicide, they may not show any outward signs at all because they are so determined and don’t want anyone to stop them. “They can be very good at hiding it. It’s very important to note, especially when people feel guilt for not seeing the signs afterwards.” Ms Borg said there’s also “suicide preparation” signs to look out for. “We look at people selling possessions, preparing wills, having appointments with lawyers and tying up loose ends as potential signs,” she said. “Another important sign is lack of future goals or if someone suddenly cancels plans, indicating there isn’t much to look forward to in the future.” If you identify the signs in someone, Ms Borg said opening dialogue could save a life. “A lot of people don’t talk because they’re worried they’ll open Pandora’s box and not

Arrests over smuggling ring A Deer Park man has been arrested and charged after authorities swooped on his property early Friday morning as part of an ongoing investigation into an illegal wildlife smuggling ring. Authorities raided the 35-year-old man’s property in relation to two lizards being posted to Hong Kong on January 29 this year. The man was allegedly caught on CCTV in Caroline Springs posting a package that was then intercepted at Melbourne Airport. The package contained an albino blue tongue and a shingleback lizard taped and stuffed in a sock and put in the bottom of a rice cooker. Investigators received an anonymous tip last week. Earlier this month another man, a 27-year-old from Chatswood in Sydney, was arrested on 16 charges of attempting to smuggle wildlife out of Victoria and New South Wales to Hong Kong. More than 150 lizards, with a street value of more than $550,000, were seized between June 2018 and February 2019. The maximum penalty for taking, disposing of or being in possession of protected wildlife is $39,652 and/or 24 months imprisonment. Three people are still at large in relation to this wildlife ring. Film festival’s scary twist By Tate Papworth Ghosts, goblins, laughs and Sunshine will light up the silver screen during the eighth annual Sunshine Short Film Festival. This year the festival will immediately follow the Sunshine Business Association’s Halloween street party in Hampshire Road – a perfect tie-in to this year’s theme, comedy with a scary twist. Festival co-ordinator Steve Pereira said there was a particular emphasis on local stories in this year’s entries.

A colourful celebration of culture took place at St Peter’s Catholic Primary School last week. The school’s deputy principal Maree McIntosh said it was a way of celebrating everything that makes the school great. “We have this day to celebrate the rich diversity our school possesses and highlight how each and every culture is great,” she said. “It’s important we acknowledge everyone and how they make Sunshine great.” The day began with the crew from Kaboom Sports hosting outdoor activities, before things moved inside for mass and a feast. “The carers and parents make a dish relating to their culture and we share them in our gym in a big feast,” Ms McIntosh said. “This is the third year we’ve done this and it’s great to see all the parents and families get involved.” Pupils were also encouraged to don traditional cultural dress on the day. “When this began eight years ago, we started off in collaboration with Sunshine Business Association to try and get people to tell positive stories about living in Sunshine and to get people excited about living in the western region,” he said. “At that time there was a lot of negative publicity about the area and people didn’t really want to claim that they lived here. We wanted to change the story and narrative and we thought the best way to do that was to get people sharing their stories of what it’s actually like living here.” Almost a decade old, the festival has grown in popularity each year. “This year we’re really, really excited,” Mr Pereira said. “We had over 70 entries, which is a record for us, but what’s particularly exciting is that we had a record number of entries from locals. “We got Vietnamese ghosts, Korean goblins

Building towards a new future Brimbank is transforming. Sunshine has been identified by the state government as a priority precinct for its strong economic and social opportunities and with it will come a raft of new jobs. A super hub train station, touted to be bigger than Southern Cross station, will be built in Sunshine and will be a major stopping point for the long-awaited Melbourne Airport rail link. With “endless possibilities” on its doorstep, Brimbank council is set to take its wish list to state Parliament next week. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said jobs are high on the list. “For the people of Brimbank, there’s a mecca of jobs there that they can come along and be a part of. They don’t build a hub and label an area a priority precinct if they’re not wanting to see the economic benefit from it,” she said. “They want people to get off the train, they want them to come to Sunshine, they want them to work here, they want them to spend here. “When we start talking about jobs, we’re talking the construction phase, we’re talking about applications coming in for commercial office buildings and all those sorts of things.” Brimbank’s unemployment rate sits at 10.3 per cent, significantly above the state average of 4.6 per cent. Additionally, about 68 per cent of local residents leave Brimbank for work every day, and 67 per cent of local jobs are filled by people living outside of the municipality. Cr Congreve said things are going to change.
“Brimbank is transforming. In 10 years’ time it’s going to look very, very different. We’ve got the biggest investment ever coming to Brimbank so we’re trying to embrace that and leverage it across a number of areas,” she said. “We’ve got jobs during construction, then you’ve got the jobs in managing and running, then you’ve got the ongoing jobs. “So if we build a corporate business tower for example, there will obviously be a raft of jobs that come from that. They might not be construction jobs, they might be IT jobs, or cybersecurity jobs for people coming out of the new cybersecurity centre.” While the projects will bring in a lot of construction work, Cr Congreve said measures were in place to ensure job opportunities continued after the projects were completed. “For those in construction … there will be something else, it just moves,” she said. “For us, the legacy will be giving people the skills and the experience, so when they’re [the projects] finished here they can go out and keep working. “Let’s face it, the infrastructure builds are just going to keep going.”

Education and training will be a new priority Brimbank council has a bold plan to link major stakeholders together in a bid to create learning pathways for jobs in the area. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said it was imperative all major stakeholders worked together to maximise the benefits of new jobs coming in. “We want to bring all levels of government, corporates – there’s likely to be a big consortium or someone who gets the contract for the rail network – small businesses in the area, Victoria University, any other education providers, into a room around a table,” she said. “We want to work out how we get these people from places like VU directly into jobs. “We envisage Melbourne Airport will also be involved with this, so how do we get them involved? “Can we create a pathway that brings people through VU or another educational institute straight into the airport and into a job? “We’re trying to create clear pathways so people can look at them and see that if they do these programs, through free TAFE or whatever it may be, that they have a job at the end of it.” It’s a massive undertaking, but Cr Congreve said the ball is already rolling in the right direction. “I’ve already had many, many discussions and we’ve already got in-principle agreements from the state government. “We’ve got an MOU with the airport, we’re in the process of doing one with VU at the

moment to bring them in – this is all about us agreeing to engage with each other around this. “We see this as potentially the biggest ever social procurement activity ever in Australia – bringing all these people in and getting them into jobs.” Tate Papworth

By Tate Papworth Police arrested 57 people as part of an operation to crack down on youth offending last week. The statewide operation, dubbed Operation Liege, involved detectives from all policing regions. Warrants were executed across Melbourne suburbs including Sunshine, Truganina, Cranbourne, Frankston, Pakenham, Reservoir and Dandenong. Fifty-seven people were arrested and multiple charges were laid for offences including carjacking, aggravated burglary, robbery and vehicle crime linked to serious offending. The majority of those arrested were aged between 15 and 21 years-old. North West Metro Region Commander Tim Hansen said Operation Liege was established in July to disrupt high-harm, high-impact youth offending. “Detectives from across the state have shared intelligence to identify a priority list of people wanted by police on outstanding warrants or for other matters and ensured they were brought into custody,” he said. “Those targeted through this operation are alleged to have committed offences which caused significant harm to victims and have a substantial impact on the broader community’s feelings of safety. “These crimes include carjackings, aggravated burglaries, armed robbery and serious street robberies – all horrendous crimes which leave a long-lasting impact on victims.”
On September 27, 2019 about 9pm, three offenders believed to be of Islander appearance forced entry to a victim’s address in Lawson Drive, Albion. Offenders were armed with weapons and assaulted the victim upon entering the address. The offenders stole the victim’s mobile phone along with a bank card owned by the victim. Shortly after, the male pictured above was captured on CCTV footage using the victim’s stolen bank card at a service station a short distance from the victim’s address. He is also wanted in relation to a commercial burglary in Taylors Road, Kealba October 9, 2019 and for stealing a motor vehicle. Police are seeking information as to his whereabouts. The operation follows another statewide investigation through Taskforce Burns into a series of group thefts at retail, electronic and telecommunications stores across the state between July and September. Detectives charged 34 offenders aged between 13 and 19 years-old with more than 150 offences including robbery and shop steal during that operation, including two teens charged with stealing from a Highpoint retail store. Maribyrnong criminal investigation unit’s Detective Senior Constable David Clarke said a number of offenders entered the Nike store at Highpoint shopping centre on September 23, suddenly fleeing with a range of clothing. “As a result of public assistance, we’ve been able to arrest and remand two teenage males, 16 and 15 years of age,” he said. “We wish to thank our community for their assistance and assure the public we do everything possible to make sure offenders are held to account – regardless of age.” Both teens have been remanded to appear in Melbourne Children’s Court. “Officers right across Victoria are working hard every day to keep the community safe by holding offenders to account and prevent youth-related crime,” Commander Hansen said. “At a local level police proactively manage bail compliance of high-risk persons of interest and work with partner agencies to help them become engaged in their community through education and employment.” The operation remains ongoing.

MY BRIMBANK Peter Burquest is a central figure in providing support for veterans in the Caroline Springs area. He’s recently been recognised for his efforts over the years. He spoke with Tate Papworth. What’s your connection to Brimbank?

I’ve lived out this way since 1973. When I was a kid I was knocking around Braybrook and Sunshine. I was a western suburbs boy right from the start.
And what was the main driving factor for doing that?
It’s a great little community. I love the different cultures and how each one tries to get on with each other. What could be done better? I think the council and everyone does a good job. They continue to do the things we need to have done. It can be hard to get the funds to do things we need to do, particularly things like the roads and the development is probably happening a bit too quick for the infrastructure. Tell us a little bit about your involvement with the Caroline Springs RSL. Myself and a colleague Murray Lewis actually opened the Caroline Springs RSL, which sort of got things going back in 2013. We’ve been

The reason we did it was to try and cater for the younger people coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq. We thought the community really needed one. It’s all about being there for our people if we’re needed.
It’s a bit over the top for me. My wife jokes I’m always out searching for the glory and in the front of photos, but it’s all good.

Following an independent audit of the council’s financial report for the 12 months ended June this year, the acting auditor-general, Mr Russell Walker, declared there was an “inherent uncertainty” regarding the continuation of the council as “a going concern”.

Twins lead the way in AFLW draft By Tara Murray Sarah and Gemma Wright have spent many hours together on the same sporting court or field throughout their lives, but now they are going their separate ways. The twins, who turned their attention to playing football with Keilor three years ago, were both picked up in the AFLW draft last Tuesday. Sarah was taken at pick 32 by North Melbourne, two picks later, Gemma was taken at pick 34 by Geelong. Both were excited for themselves and each other. They said celebrations didn’t start until after Gemma was picked. “We watched it together, with Gem, family, family friends and Emma Kerry, who was our Keilor coach,� Sarah said. “I was surprised to go, let alone go so early. “They [North] had interviewed me and I’d had interviews with Geelong and Collingwood as well. “Emma thought I might go to North in the second round. I was hoping it would be in the second round.� Sarah, who along with her dad and grandmother are already North Melbourne supporters, said it all became real to her once her sister had been drafted as well. Gemma said she had spoken to Geelong in the lead-up to the draft and thought she may have been a chance. “They [family] were all really excited for us,� Gemma said. “They were all waiting to get the second one of us called out to celebrate. “My housemates are Geelong supporters and I think they were more excited than me.� Neither sister said they could have imagined they would be on an AFLW list when they

“It was just more of having some fun and mucking around with our mates. “I love it and I can’t get it enough.� Both sisters had an instant impact at Keilor. Sarah won the club and league best and fairests in her first two seasons of football. Gemma finished runners-up in the club and third in the league best and fairest, in 2017 and runner-up to her sister in both awards in 2018. This year the pair made the move to Carlton in the VFLW where Gemma claimed the club best and fairest. Sarah, who finished runner-up, only started training four weeks before the season start after breaking her neck last year playing football. “I went into the night not expecting to win anything,� Gemma said. “Sarah beat me the first few times, I finally beat her this year. “It’s hard as you want to see her do well. As long as we come first and second and keep it in the family, we’re happy.� Sarah said it was good to see her sister claim the best and fairest award. “The hardest thing about being a twin, is she’s my hardest competitor and my best friend.� The sisters paid tribute to the work that Kerry had put in with them, first at Keilor, and then at Carlton where she is now an assistant coach. The pair haven’t looked too far ahead and whether they might end up playing against each other. Just once before they have been on different teams, when Gemma left the Hume City Broncos, to play at the Melbourne Tigers for one season. Sarah got the bragging rights with the Broncos winning both games.

Western United midfielder Dario Jertec has been around the block long enough to know that losing is an inevitable part of football. While United’s 2-1 loss to Melbourne City was a bitter pill to swallow, Jertec and his teammates will look forward to their chance for redemption when they face Melbourne Victory in a much-anticipated derby at Marvel Stadium this Saturday night. “We’re playing for wins, but sometimes you lose, sometimes you’re not lucky, but this is football,” Jertec said. “We have a new chance, we’ll try to win and we’ll give all the best of ourselves to win.” Jertec, a 34-year-old Croatian with 17 years experience as a professional footballer, was encouraged by Western United’s second half
performance against Melbourne City. He believes his side did enough to claim points out of the contest, but they were ripped away by a striking master class from Melbourne City frontman Jamie Maclaren. “I think they were better [in the] first half, second half we were better, but they scored this last five minutes and they take three points,” Jertec said. Jertec has been a key cog in the Western United midfield, but he was critical of his own performance in the loss to Melbourne City. Like a number of his teammates, Jertec struggled to make an impact in the first half, but he was beginning to feed his forwards some delightful passes in the second half
before he was subbed off. With a point to prove, Jertec could be one to watch for United in the derby against Victory. “I’m a central midfielder and I have to create good passes for [Alessandro] Diamanti, for [Besart] Berisha, for Pana [Kone] if I’m behind him,” he said. “This is my job. “Today I didn’t be good, but next week I have a new chance. “Every week is [a] new game and I hope we’ll be better next week.” Western United will face Melbourne City at Marvel Stadium on Saturday at 7.30pm. United fails to fire By Lance Jenkinson Western United lacked the discipline and polish that it displayed in its first two A-League games and paid a heavy price with a 2-1 loss to a slicker 10-man Melbourne City in the derby at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Sunday night. United trailed by a goal at the break after a disappointing first half, but the Mark Rudan-coached side found a way back into the contest in the 66th minute when prolific striker Besart Berisha converted the penalty he drew following a harsh challenge from City defender Harrison Delbridge, who saw yellow for a second time and was given his marching orders. If United got the impression that it would be a little more comfortable playing with the man advantage, it proved a false dawn as Melbourne City found a spectacular winner through in-form striker Jamie Maclaren in the 85th minute. Maclaren, who finished with a double, was the difference between the two sides. Western United centre-back Andrew Durante described the loss as frustrating after his side had worked hard to get back into the contest and created the better chances in the second half. “It’s extremely disappointing we didn’t leave the home ground with at least a point,” Durante said. “I thought we had enough chances to at least finish the game a draw, but Maclaren is in some serious form at the moment and is scoring from all types of angles.” Not unlike the week before against Perth Glory, Western United came out of the blocks a little bit flat. Perhaps it had more to do with Melbourne City’s attacking intent on this occasion, but, either way, it was not what the 7042 spectators largely decked out in the green and black of United wanted to see. There were fleeting moments of excitement for United, in particular two chances that fell the way of Berisha. Attacking midfielder Alessandro Diamanti, who had quality touches all game for United, played in a nice through ball to Berisha in the 16th minute, but City defender Scott Galloway was quicker to react. Three minutes later, Diamanti whipped in a corner and Berisha’s powerfully struck header could only find the awaiting arms of City goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis. Aside from a chance just before half-time, when Diamanti put a free kick into the box and Scott McDonald’s header was parried away by Bouzanis, there was little else to get the United fans excited about. saves from Western United goalkeeper Filip Kurto. Despite conceding two goals, Kurto, the A-League’s goalkeeper of the year last season, was one of the better players on the ground for United. The second half was more positive for Western United. United started to win their share of possession in the midfield and caused the City defence a few headaches with some dangerous balls into the front third. When Berisha netted from the penalty spot, it looked as though Western United had done
enough to weather the storm and could be on their way to victory. However, Maclaren’s spectacular goal meant all three points were heading to Melbourne City. Josh Brillante played a long hopeful ball and Maclaren had the speed to leave the United defence in his wake and power a shot to the right of Kurto that nestled into the far post. Western United cannot afford to dwell on the result with long-time A-League powerhouse Melbourne Victory on the horizon in a derby at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. Both teams sit mid-table with four points each.
Western United centre-back Andrew Durante has formed a strong bond with fellow defenders Ersan Gulum and Connor Chapman in a short space of time. United has been fairly solid at the back, conceding just three goals in as many A-League games. While the form and numbers stack up for the trio, Durante is not resting on his laurels with pressure coming from within the squad. “Myself, Ersan and Connor have got a really good relationship,” he said. “There’s also good pressure on us from Brendan Hamill and [Aaron] Calver, who are excellent centre-backs as well. “We know that we need to perform if we want to keep our spot and that’s really good competition.” Durante has been a smart pick-up by Western United in its inaugural season. The experienced defender has been a calming influence in the heart of defence for United. The 37-year-old has also been a dependable distributor out of the back third. A former New Zealand international and stalwart of Wellington Phoenix, the Sydney-born Durante has enjoyed his first stint in Melbourne with Western United. “I feel really good and I’m enjoying my time,” he said. “I knew coming here what I was going to expect from working with [coach] Mark [Rudan] before. “It’s a great group of guys, a fantastic football club and I’m really proud to be a part of it. “So far I’m loving life here in Melbourne.” Durante is adamant that Western United is built for sustainable long term success. “It’s only going to get better,” he said. “The more we can get good results, it’s going to grow. “It’s a really special football club and they’re doing all the right things on and off the park. “It’ll take time, but I think we’re doing all the right things.” Lance Jenkinson

By Lance Jenkinson Sunshine has kept its flawless record intact with a commanding 11-6 win over western suburbs rivals Newport Rams in the first of a mouth-watering three-game series in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 competition. The Eagles are leading the way at the top of the ladder, owning a 5-0 record and sitting a game clear of the chasing pack. Eagles coach Stuart Clayton has little to complain about when it comes to the performance of his team, but is pleased more so about the positive intent in the opening five rounds and wants it to continue for the remainder of the season. “Eventually you’re going to lose one, but as long as they continue to do the right things, stay switched on and give 100 per cent each week, that’s all that I can ask for,” he said. Sunshine produced its best offensive performance of the season in the 11-run pile-on. The Eagles were aided by a stiff breeze that took the ball to left field. Even though the wind favoured the batters, the Eagles stuck to their strengths. “We were pretty confident that we were going alright most of the game because we hit the ball well early,” Clayton said. “You wouldn’t get any assistance hitting the ball to right field, but if you hit it to left field, the ball just kept travelling. “We’re not a power hitting team, we don’t hit home runs very often. “We’re more of a contact team, we like to hit line drives, get runners on and keep moving them around one base at a time and that’s what we did.” Russell Letts was the shining light for

Sunshine. Letts had three hits – the most of all Eagles – and took care of business in the outfield in tough conditions. Seeing Letts come through the ranks has put a smile on the dial of Clayton. “I actually coached him 13 years ago when he was under 12s,” Clayton said. Designated hitter Daniel Wilkie and third base Nikau Pouaka-Grego picked up two hits each for Sunshine.
Pouaka-Grego and Riley Barr were the centre of attention playing against their former club Newport. Pouaka-Grego backed up his strong showing at-bat with an error-free performance at third base, while Barr did the bulk of the work on the mound for Sunshine to good effect. Sunshine and Newport will be back at Barclay Reserve on Tuesday night for a mid-week clash before completing the three-game series on Saturday at KC White Reserve in Newport.

It was another frustrating weekend for clubs in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association with rain causing disruptions at most venues. The clash between St Albans and Yarraville Club in senior division at Kings Park Reserve was one of the hardest hit with just 3.2 overs of play possible. For what it’s worth, St Albans won the toss in the one-day game, batted first and reached 0-10 before play was abandoned and the game called a draw. Sunshine United’s battle with Strathmore was also a fleeting one. United got to 2-68 before the heavens opened up and play was abandoned. Three of the four games in division 1 west got completed, including Deer Park’s clash with Aberfeldie at Clifton Park. It was a day to forget for the Parkers though, losing by 74 runs. In division 2, Sunshine posted 1-43 before its meeting with Newport-Digman was called off, while not a single ball was bowled in the Keilor Park and Laverton game. Sunshine Heights claimed its second win of the division 3 season, beating Pascoe Vale Hadfield by seven wickets. Grand United had a rough day at the office in division 4, bowled out for 74 in their quest for Aberfeldie Park’s 6-145. In the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association, Taylors Lakes fell two wickets short of victory against Balwyn in a rain-affected match. Lance Jenkinson

Hyundai’s three shades of green By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring Hyundai has taken itself to the forefront of automotive battery technology with its Ioniq hatchback being the only vehicle to be offered in Australia with three different variations of electric power – petrol/electric hybrid, petrol/ plug-in electric hybrid and fully electric. The entry level Ioniq Hybrid uses a conventional Pruis-type mixture of petrol/ electric with its principal power source coming from a 1.6-litre four-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine of 77 kW combined with a 32 kW electric motor for a total output of 109 kW. The batteries are recharged through regenerative braking. Combined fuel usage is listed at 3.4 litres per 100 kilometres. Ioniq Plug-In has the same engine as the Hybrid with combined output of 104 kW and 265 Nm. Like the Hybrid, it uses regenerative braking to charge the batteries but can also be plugged into any external power point to provide about 63km of electric-only travel. While the primary power source of the Hybrid is the engine, the Plug-In runs on the battery with the engine only kicking in when additional power or torque is required or when the battery has been flattened. Charging takes just over two hours. Fuel consumption is listed at a frugal 1.1 litres per 100km. Ioniq Electric relies entirely on battery power to produce its peak outputs of 88 kW and 295 Nm. With an approximate range of 250km it falls well below the 400+km range of the Hyundai Kona Electric SUV but an imminent upgrade will increase by about 20 per cent. Like the Kona, the level of the Ioniq Electric’s regenerative braking can be adjusted through steering-wheel mounted paddles.

squeeze. Rear legroom is reasonable although the Ioniq’s coupe-like roofline will make life uncomfortable for anyone approaching 1.8 metres in height.
Driving
Our test car was the Ioniq Hybrid Premium. As is the norm with hybrids the car starts under electric power and can confuse the new adopter because, despite its silence, it’s ready to move. First impressions are good. Unfortunately the parking brake is of the old awkward foot-operated variety – why? Once underway the Ioniq Hybrid is comfortable and easy to drive with the regenerative braking the only indication that you aren’t driving a conventional petrol car. Two drive modes are available, Eco and Sport. Given that green was our colour of the week we spent most of the time in Eco mode earning ourselves an 80 per cent efficient driving rating. Switching to Sport mode sharpened up the performance noticeably, with paddle shifts adding to the driving enjoyment.

Styling
Ioniq has a sleek fastback profile designed not just for its looks but also, with a drag co-efficient of 0.24, to enhance aerodynamic performance. The major difference in appearance between the three variants is at the front where the Electric, which needs minimal airflow, doesn’t have a grille.
Safety
All Hyundai Ioniq models have achieved the maximum five-start ANCAP safety rating with seven airbags, front and rear-parking sensors and – given the restricted rear visibility – a rear view camera with dynamic guidelines.
Also standard is the Hyundai SmartSense safety package that includes smart cruise control; autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection; lane keep assist; blind spot monitoring; forward collision warning and rear cross-traffic alert.
Interior
Adding to Ioniq’s green credentials much of the Ioniq’s interior has been crafted using a variety of eco-friendly materials including recycled plastic, powdered wood, volcanic stone and sugar cane by-products. The second row is comfortable with enough room for two adults without too much of a
