United off to flying start Western United is off and running in its inaugural A-League season, claiming a 1-0 victory over Wellington on Sunday. Head coach Mark Rudan said it was pleasing to be playing games for points, after a long build-up establishing the club in the west of Melbourne. “As a new club we’ve been working tirelessly behind the scenes to build this football club, but now we start to rock and roll,” Rudan said. “It’s been a good response from the … community, particularly the first three practise games at Caroline Springs which exceeded our expectations in terms of the people who supported the football club or wanted to find out what we’re all about. “We’re working very hard away from the football field to connect with the community.” Rudan said showing the western region what the club was about was a big focus in its early days. The club has a current membership base of just over 2500 and is hoping to double that in its first season. Recycling talks begin By Tate Papworth Brimbank council is in negotiations with waste management company Cleanaway to sure up a permanent new kerbside recycling agreement. The council had previously contracted SKM for its recycling. The company folded in July, owing tens of millions of dollars and brought the municipality’s kerbside recycling to an abrupt halt. A massive 2314 tonnes of recyclable material from across Brimbank was dumped in landfill for more than eight weeks.

The council was left $185,000 out of pocket, but has since received a state government grant to offset the costs of landfilling recyclables. The council had arranged a short-term agreement with SKM receivers, KordaMentha to process its kerbside collected recyclable material at the Laverton North processing facility. The $66 million purchase of SKM by Cleanaway was announced last week. Brimbank council acting director infrastructure and city services Tom Razmovski said a new arrangement was now in the works.

“Given the acquisition by Cleanaway of the SKM assets, a new contract will need to be negotiated,” he said. “Council will also continue to liaise with the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group in relation to the options for long term arrangements for the processing of Brimbank’s recyclables.” It’s yet to be determined if the new contract will impact rates, but Mr Razmovski said the kerbside recycling process would remain the same for the foreseeable future. “Given a new contract is still to be negotiated, the cost of service and any impact on rates is

yet to be determined,” Mr Razmovski said. “At this stage council is not looking to change the current kerbside collection arrangements, however the state government is in the process of preparing a circular economy strategy which may provide options for new recycling services for council’s consideration.” Cleanaway’s purchase of SKM doesn’t solve the issue of five warehouses left with thousands of tonnes of stockpiled glass, paper, cardboard and plastic. ■ Warehouse

Commuter crush as trains become overcrowded Brimbank commuters are increasingly squeezing onto overcrowded trains during peak times, new Department of Transport data reveals. The department’s annual passenger load survey reveals that 10.6 per cent of Sunbury line passengers are travelling on overcrowded trains during the afternoon peak. The line has 25 afternoon peak services. In 2018, no afternoon services were found to be overcrowded. The survey found that the Sunbury line was

There is always hope An outreach team based at Sunshine hospital is giving hope to people at risk of suicide. The Hospital Outreach Post-suicidal Engagement (HOPE) team provides practical support and follow-up for people leaving hospital after a suicide attempt, their families, friends and carers. Mid West Area Mental Health Service psychologist Alana Cross encouraged people who may be struggling to reach out for help. “I know that it can be a very difficult experience and it can be hard to reach for help, but we’ve had very promising results from our program,” Ms Cross said.

“When people do reach out … there is that help for them. It’s just one avenue of where people can access support and the help that they need at the time. “We feel really positive about our work.” Ms Cross said her role within the team was to understand a person’s suicide story. “We help people with a broad range of psychological interventions. Our aim is really around supporting people to understand … what has driven them to the point where they are really struggling. “Our program shows … how much change can happen even when people are going through their most difficult part of their life.” Ms Cross said the HOPE program was a

Work on the Stony Creek Transformation project will restart following a $6.7 million cash injection from the state government. The government last week provided funding through project partners Development Victoria, City West Water, Melbourne Water, and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) to get the project back on track. The announcement ends months of lobbying from Brimbank council, which feared it may have been left with an $11 million hole in the ground. The project, which will transform a concrete drain back to a natural wetland, hit a standstill earlier this year after costs blew out because of asbestos contamination. The council has been calling on both levels of government to provide further funds to clean up the site and get work restarted. Member for St Albans, Natalie Suleyman welcomed the news that works would resume soon. She joined the council in calling on the federal government to unlock further funds for the project. “We’re all on board and working together to ensure that this project is back on track as quickly as possible,” Ms Suleyman said. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the upgrades would build on work already underway to extend platforms and build new stabling at stations along the Sunbury line. “These upgrades will pave the way for new high-capacity trains to run along the Sunbury line and through the Metro Tunnel – providing more regular, reliable and comfortable services for passengers on this line,” she said.

Runway plan spurs home rethink By Tate Papworth Several Keilor residents are considering selling up because of Melbourne Airport’s third runway plans. The airport had initially planned for an east-west alignment, however it says recent data revealed a north-south option may be better. A north-south runway would mean additional aircraft traffic over Brimbank suburbs, including Keilor. One resident, Lyndi Chapman said she was between a rock and a hard place. “I love living here, but that new flight path will be right over us,” she said.

“It’s noisy enough as it is, sometimes it’s just plane after plane, so if they add another flight path over here it’ll be unliveable. “I’ll be looking at moving if they make a decision to go north-south. “The problem is that if they do make the decision, the price of my home will drop, meaning I won’t be able to really look anywhere within inner Melbourne.” Another resident, who did not want to be named, has lived in the suburb for almost three decades, but is also considering his future there. “I have major concerns. The family and myself have begun having conversations about

living elsewhere. It started off just talking, but those have since begun to grow a lot more.” He said the argument that people who bought near an airport should know the risks doesn’t hold weight. “If you bought near a freeway, you know there’s going to be traffic, but if they decide to re-route the freeway through your front garden, you’re not going to be thrilled. “The trouble is every day we don’t act, we risk our home value dropping if this decision is made. If we move anywhere else within Melbourne we can’t afford a massive decrease in value.” Brad Teal Real Estate sales manager Craig

Teal said there had been an increase in listings. “When the [runway] review was first announced we had a number of people inquire as to what house prices would be,” Mr Teal said. “There was a spike in listings as a direct result of the looming airport decision. “There was the initial surge, but now it seems that people are only listing for genuine reasons.” He didn’t expect the decision to hurt the Keilor property market. “People who live around the area know what’s there and tend to accept it. “Keilor has always been a little bit more insulated from other market forces.”

Hundreds of people are expected to flock to Taylors Creek Linear Park later this month for the annual community festival and market day. Organised by the Taylors Lakes Lions Club, the event aims to celebrate the Taylors Lakes community while raising money for charities. Murder charge

An 18-year-old man fronted the Melbourne Magistrates Court last week, charged with the murder of 17-year-old Maaka Hakiwai. Maaka was killed and his brother Nate, 18, critically injured after receiving stab wounds following an altercation between the pair and a group of men on Main Road West about 2.30pm on September 28. Joshua Horton of Sydenham appeared for a brief hearing on Wednesday morning, charged with murder, armed robbery and intentionally causing serious injury.

Light shines on St Albans A colourful assortment of moon lanterns, entertainment and food will take centre stage at St Albans Victoria Square on Saturday. The annual St Albans Moon Lantern Festival will be held on October 19 from 1pm and St Albans Business Association marketing manager Ray Jacobs said there will be something for everyone. “There’ll be entertainment from 1-6pm with the highlight being the moon lantern parade for the kids at 5.30pm,” he said. “There’ll also be lantern making, ice cream and a free sausage sizzle.” Lantern-making workshops will be held throughout the day and children will have the

Brimbank council has commenced investigations into a number of premises that it suspects may be illegal brothels. In May, the council endorsed a plan to hire investigators to enter alleged illegal establishments with the intent of gathering evidence that proves sexual services are being provided.

‘Foul’ smell concern

By Goya Dmytryshchak While most people welcomed recent warmer spring weather, long-suffering Brooklyn residents reported renewed odours similar to “dead animal” smells. The EPA’s pollution hotline received six odour complaints one Wednesday night and more reports two days later. Brooklyn resident Lexi Christou, of the Brooklyn Pollution Action Group, said like many of her neighbours, she smelled the foul odour. “There’s a distinct mix between either a livestock smell or a dead meaty animal smell,” she said. “I got home at about 9.30 Wednesday night and it was really, really strong and when I went inside my husband said ‘It still stinks out there’,” she said. “He’d been home since 5 o’clock. “We don’t go outside at all when it’s like that and if we do it’s away from the area. So, we don’t take the dogs to the dog park around the corner or anything like that because it’s just disgusting. “You can’t be out there with that kind of smell. “If you’re out there trying to have a barbecue in the evening with your family, it’s not possible.” Fellow Brooklyn resident Chris Dunlevy also filed a report about the odour on Wednesday. “There’s probably three or four particular smells you get and that particular one was the really foul livestock smell, like sheep or cattle being led to the slaughter,” he said. “That particular one was really rancid.” EPA western metropolitan regional manager Stephen Lansdell said officers were

Kealba residents are celebrating after VCAT ruled against a development plan for more than 200 apartments and townhouses on the former Kealba Secondary College site. Residents had long held concerns that the proposal was excessive and would create multiple issues. The Brimbank council also had a number of issues with the proposal, however the developer decided to have the matter heard at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal before councillors could vote on the matter. VCAT member Tracey Bilston-McGillen said a number of items needed to be addressed, including the need for a carparking plan, which identifies roads, pedestrian, cycles and vehicle access locations. She said the Driscolls Road frontage should be reviewed and the scale and type of houses fronting the street should be reconsidered. Concerns about the proliferation of garages and driveway entries was also listed as an area to be addressed. A spokesperson for Kealba Residents Against Over Development said it was cause for celebration. “We were never against development at the site, it was just how excessive this proposed one was.” The developer can submit a revised plan to the council for consideration, or appeal VCAT’s decision.

Cleanaway now intends to resume kerbside services, but that doesn’t solve the problem festering in suburban factories. Marwood Construction project manager Carly Whitington said they have no idea what to do with the 10,000 tonnes of discarded recyclable material they’ve inherited at their Derrimut warehouse. “With the news that Cleanaway has purchased the failed SKM enterprise, we were in the hope that Cleanaway would come and rectify the left behind issue, but we’ve been advised that’s not the case,” Ms Whitington said. “Basically what we’re trying to do is liaise with the government to see if there can be some subsidy or deal … come to an agreement about us transporting this material to the Cleanaway site on Gilbertson Road and having it recycled. “They haven’t got any answers for us yet, which they haven’t for quite a while. We’re

waiting for some form of resolution because we need to do something with it.” She called on the state government to end the state of limbo. “We met with the Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio. We met with some of her associates as well, but there hasn’t been a yes or a no.

“I’ve even contacted a representative and said if it’s a no, just tell us it’s a no and we’ll walk away. If you are going to help us in some sort of respect, tell us, give us a time, don’t just leave us in limbo. Because that’s where we are at the moment. We’ve been left with this for two to three months since the collapse and we don’t know what to do with it.”

Ms Whitington estimated the company was already out of pocket $500,000 on lost rent and would have to find close to $2 million to clean the warehouse. “It surprises me that the government isn’t taking a proactive approach to this,” she said. “People are going to be looking at this and thinking ‘why am I bothering recycling’.

Brimbank residents are being encouraged to share their knowledge and memories of the half-houses built in St Albans from the late 1940s to the late 1960s. Brimbank council is keen to capture the story of the half-houses which were built as affordable homes. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said the half-houses were important to Brimbank because they are a big part of the lives and memories of many post-war migrants and their children. “We want to understand their historical role and make sure this is shared and appreciated,” she said. The half-houses – also known as bungalows – were small, temporary houses with two or three rooms. They were sold soon after the end of World War II when there was a housing shortage in Melbourne.

Some half-houses still stand today but in most cases are now attached to a new house and used as kitchen, laundry, bathroom or shed. “We’re hoping to tap into our community’s knowledge and memories of these half-houses for a study that will record the history and appearance of such houses,” Cr Congreve said. “We’d love to hear from anyone who has lived in these houses of has an association with them. “We’re also asking for your ideas on how all this information could be shared and celebrated within St Albans and the broader community.” A report on the half-houses will be presented to council at a later date. Run to resurface courts By Laura Michell St Albans Heights Primary School pupils will be running for a cause later this month. The school is holding a fun run on October 28 to raise money to resurface its two basketball courts. Teacher Chris Karageorge said it was hoped the run would raise $10,000. “We want to resurface the two basketball courts with instant turf that is suitable for outdoors. At the moment the courts are lumpy and bumpy and tree roots have done damage in some parts. It’s a bit of a tripping hazard,” he said. “The courts are usable but not in great condition.” The fun run will be held throughout the day with prep pupils running around the oval while the older pupils run around the school grounds and surrounding streets. Grade 5 and 6 pupils will be running four kilometres. Teachers have also signed up for the run. “[The fun run] is a great way for kids to take pride in the school. It also keeps them active and fit,” Mr Karageorge said. “A lot of our students come from a low socio-economic background and this gives them a chance to see if they do something small it can make a big impact on their school community. “It will also help to reduce absenteeism and get families involved.” The school is hoping the community will get behind the fun run and is asking local businesses to donate fruit and water for pupils. The school is also looking for people to set up and supervise drink stations and cheer on the pupils along the fun run route. All volunteers must have a working with children’s check and can register their details at the school office.

Night youth hub a success Sunshine’s Youth Junction has been encouraging young community members to drop by its Sunshine centre and “hang out.” The youth services organisation has been piloting an evening drop-in located at the Visy Cares Hub from 5-10pm. Four sessions were held across late September and early October in an effort to tackle an increase in anti-social behaviour within the Sunshine CBD. Youth Junction communications and marketing co-ordinator Kristine Bugeja said the “Hang out @ The Hub” sessions had been a success. “The nightly sessions have encouraged young people aged between 12-25 years to engage in pro-social activities, including the use of video games on the big screen, music, food, beverages or chill out watching movies,” she said. “The pilot program has been a huge success with commendations from Victoria Police who are partnering this initiative. “The feedback from young people has been extremely positive with one young person saying it’s just good to have somewhere to hang out’.” Ms Bugeja said each sessions had been attended by more than 20 young people. She said a major positive had been the number of people who had since accessed services at the Visy Cares Hub. Tate Papworth

Sunshine Council’s $492,000 surplus in the 1979-80 financial year could mean the return of an elected council in 1980. Dr. Ken Coghill, MLA (Werribee) raised the question of council elections in the Legislative Assembly last week … and used a Sunshine Advocate story to make his point.

Sunshine residents may be forgiven for feeling caught in a timewarp when Footscray and Collingwood football teams clash at Skinner Reserve on Sunday. But the clock will not have been turned back. It is just a case of tenacious Bulldogs snarling back in a “Legends of the Seventies” game to raise money for the threatened Footscray club.

A State Government report has recommended that Brimbank council consider changing the way March 2000 mayoral elections are held, a move condemned by the present mayor. The report, commissioned by the Minister for Planning and Local Government, Mr Maclellan, recommended the council consider a possible review of the local law covering next election of the mayor and the deputy mayor.

The intersection of Station Road and the Western Highway at Deer Park is Brimbank’s most accident-prone crossroad. Revealing the municipality’s top accident hot spots for January to September, Sergeant Rod Stein, of the Brimbank traffic management unit, said traffic volume was a significant factor at the Deer Park site, which had 11 collisions over the period.

I enjoy engaging with the staff from the 12 youth services that reside in the Visy Cares Hub. The Hub has over 150 staff from services including legal, disability services, new arrival support, crime prevention, drug and alcohol, learn local and employment services, education and

Global action starts at Derrimut Some lucky children between 9 and 12 years old gathered recently at the Ziehl-Abegg premises in Derrimut for a very unusual and exciting Open Day.

They were taking part in the “Show with the Mouse” initiative – and got to be part of building an electric motor. The initiative, offered to children on all six continents, has been created by the international company to provide children all over the world a closer look at how Ziehl-Abegg manufactures its high-spec ventilation systems and control, drive and automotive technology.

Celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Newar Buddhists, the popular Diwali festival represents the symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. This year, Diwali begins on October 27 and runs typically for five days, with the climax (main Diwali) occurring on the third day, coinciding with the darkest night of the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika. In the lead-up to Diwali, celebrants clean, renovate and decorate their homes and workplaces. During the climax, they put on their best clothes (often new) and light up their homes with oil lamps or candles, set off crackers, and offer worship to Lakshmi – the goddess of prosperity and wealth. During the major cultural festival, there’ll be joyful and delicious family feasts as well, with sweets (mithai) and gifts shared. The third day (climax) of Diwali is an official holiday in about a dozen countries. Rangoli is one popular Diwali tradition –– beautiful patterns made using colourful powders and flowers.

People draw rangoli on the floor by the entrance of their homes to welcome the gods and bring good luck. Colourful homemade “footprints of Lakshmi” may also be scattered throughout homes. The subcontinent’s diaspora in Australia ensures Diwali rich and centuries-long traditions continue, with many Australians of all persuasions eagerly joining in the colourful and exciting celebrations. SPORT Young star soaks up the United excitement Ivan Vujica described the excitement surrounding the week leading up to Western United’s first ever game in the Hyundai A-League as one like no other in his career. Vujica is a well travelled young player, having featured in top level competitions in Australia, with the Newcastle Jets, and Croatia, with Lokomotiva Zagreb and Dinamo Zagreb, all before the age of 22. When Western United came calling in the off season, Vujica had no hesitation in making the move, knowing he would be going into a unique situation. Vujica is excited by the firsts that lay ahead with United and he experienced that in the lead-up to Sunday’s season-opening 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix. “There’s always a buzz at the start of a season, but this is an extra type of buzz,” Vujica said. “It’s the first official game the club will play so the buzz is something very surreal. “We’re making history here and this is something you only get to do once and every club only gets to do it once.” Vujica was sold on the vision of Western United. The left back met with United coach Mark

Rudan before making the decision to move south from his hometown of Sydney. “What lured me here was the project and the vision the club had from the get go,” Vujica said. “That was something that straight away stuck with me when Mark spoke to me and I spoke with members of the board.” Vujica is excited to be a foundation player for Western United. He believes he and his United teammates can set the culture of the club from day one and that will hold the club in good stead forever more. “We’re the setting stone,” Vujica said. “We’re building the blocks of the club that will be set for the next 100 years or more. “It is special that we are the ones creating this and the next generations after this will take it on after us. “As coaches and players we’re all creating a culture and shaping the club how we want it to look for the future.” Before moving into a newly constructed football-specific stadium in Tarneit, Western United will play at least its first two seasons of home games in Geelong and Ballarat. Vujica is urging the western suburbs football supporters to go along for the ride and build

a strong supporter base before the team eventually arrives in Tarneit. He is eager to see the terraces at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong packed with supporters decked out in green and black for the home opener against Perth Glory on Saturday from 5pm.

“We can’t wait to play in front of our own fans,” Vujica said. “We’ve met a lot of our fans at the pre-season matches and we hope more of them come out and be that 12th man for us and help us during our campaign. “This can only happen once in a lifetime, so this is something you’ll want to see. “It will be an unbelievable experience for the players, for the fans, for everyone.” Vujica had to bide his time on the Western United bench for the season opener against Wellington. He has enjoyed every minute of the build-up to the season and is keen to get some playing time as soon as possible. “This is the next step in my career, which I thought was the right choice and I stand by that,” he said. “I’m learning every day through Mark Rudan and players like [Andrew] Durante and Ersan Gulum. “It’s great to be around players like this and [Alessandro] Diamanti and [Panagiotis] Kone. “They’re so experienced and for someone like myself, I can learn from them and I’m grateful to be a part of that.” Lance Jenkinson

Western United’s historic first win By Lance Jenkinson Western United has travelled across the ditch to claim its first ever points in the Hyundai A-League. In their debut game, United conquered Wellington Phoenix 1-0 in an arm wrestle at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Sunday. Big name signing Besart Berisha, acquired only two weeks before the start of the season, scored United’s historic first goal in the 34th minute, which was the winning goal of the game. It was no shock to see Berisha on the scoresheet first, considering he is the top goalscorer in league history. Western United had the kick-off to start the game and settled into an early groove. United dominated on the ball with Dario Jertec and Panagiotis Kone controlling proceedings from the centre of the park. Jertec, a former Croatia under-21 international, was the most influential player on the park in the first half. Most of United’s positive attacks went through the 34-year-old Jertec, including the goal. Jertec unlocked the defence, playing a ball into the feet of left winger Connor Pain, allowing Pain to get in behind the defence. Pain found just enough space to put in a cross, which sailed over the crowd of players in the box and to the back post for United teammate Josh Risdon. With a neat first touch, Risdon re-directed the ball low and hard into the mixer to find Berisha, who instinctively guided it home with the inside of his right boot. It was a history-making moment that gave United its first lead. The lead was only possible because of United goalkeeper Filip Kurto, who moments earlier pulled off a superb diving save to deny a sweetly timed long range strike from Wellington’s Liberato Cacace. It was a save to savour for Kurto, a former Phoenix player who was subjected to jeers all game from the home crowd. Alessandro Diamanti made an impressive debut in the Western United captain’s arm band. Diamanti was a constant handful for the Wellington defence. The former Italian international added a touch of class to the United front third.

While Diamanti and Berisha were hard-working on the front line, Western United had its fair share of defending to do. In that respect, Andrew Durante, another former Phoenix player copping a few boos, Ersan Gulum and Connor Chapman stood firm. Durante was absolutely superb in the heart of the defence, detonating countless Phoenix forays forward and kick-starting United from the back. Western United deserved its one goal lead at the break. The second half had a different complexion to it, though. Wellington seemed to grow in confidence and played with more attacking flair.

While the Phoenix was on the front foot, Kurto was not tested as much as the hosts would have liked. The Phoenix’s best chance came through a rare indirect free kick late in the second half. The chance sailed over the crossbar and out of harms way for United. Holding a fragile one goal lead after 90 minutes, Western United still had plenty of work to do with the referee adding on seven minutes of stoppage time. A head clash which drew blood from Jertec added even more time on top of that stoppage time, so the game went beyond 100 minutes. With some fresh legs in substitutes Jonathan Aspropotamitis, Kwabena Appiah-Kubi and

Max Burgess, United saw off the threat. Scott McDonald was the pick of the United players in the second half. The former Socceroo was able to hold the ball up for his side under pressure and be the cool head required in a tight game. When the full-time whistle finally came, United coach Mark Rudan was smiling like a Cheshire cat, hugging his support staff and players in celebration. Now Western United will turn its attention to picking up its first points on Australian soil. Lions go down, but salvage some pride in second dig Taylors Lakes managed to salvage some pride on the second day of its 100-run loss on first innings to Mount Waverley in the opening round of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season. The Lions were on the rough end of the batting conditions on day one, facing a fresh Mount Waverley bowling line-up on a lively pitch and were bowled out for 111 in 39 overs. With some of the life coming out of the deck, Mount Waverley’s batsmen had little trouble surpassing the Taylors Lakes score and quickly built a big lead with 6-211 before the declaration. The second innings was much better for Taylors Lakes, marching confidently to 2-118 off 31.1 before the closure. was completely different to the first Saturday,” he said. “It was obviously a bit drier, flatter and a bit more ideal for batting conditions. “We went out and batted the way that we know we can and got 120 without really trying.

“It was really good for them to get some runs and a bit of confidence and knowing they can trust their ability going into next week.” Marrodon Bend led the way for Taylors Lakes with 52 not out. Bend improved on his 16 in the first dig. “Bendy hits a hard ball and he’s got a very good head on his shoulders,” Wakeling said. “I anticipate he’ll make a number of runs this year.” Marcus Just was the other Taylors Lakes batsman to gain some confidence with 37. It was the way Bend and Just constructed their innings that impressed Wakeling. “The boys certainly didn’t go out there with an aggressive mindset,” he said. “They were very patient and when they did get the ball to hit, they made the most of it.” Earlier in the day, Taylors Lakes’ bowlers fought back after a rough start.

At 2-160, Mount Waverley looked set for a massive score, but the Lions found some resistance with the ball through youngsters Aidan Brasher and Liam Wolf. Brasher finished with 4-50 off 12 overs, while Wolf took 1-39 off 10. Wakeling chipped in with 1-53 off 11.4. Brasher was the talk of the team in the dressing room after the match. “He bowled six overs last week and beat the bat a lot, so he was unlucky not to have a couple of wickets,” Wakeling said. “This week he backed up what he did last week and got a bit of reward out of it.” While Taylors Lakes came nowhere near the points, it has a bit of momentum on the back of a strong finish, which it can take into its round two battle with Balwyn at Lionheart Reserve. Crows take command By Lance Jenkinson Everything Sunshine touched turned to gold on the opening day of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 season. The Crows executed all facets of the game en route to a commanding 97-run win over Werribee Centrals in a one-day game at Dempster Park on Saturday. Crows captain-coach Troy Stone was full of praise for his team. “I’m pretty excited with our start,” he said. “I couldn’t have asked for any more.” Sunshine got sent in to bat on a green top but never appeared uncomfortable. The Crows posted a competitive 4-203 off their 40 overs to be in the box seat at the halfway mark. Stone top-scored for Sunshine with 53 off just 37 balls. Once Fernando wreaked havoc with the bat, he turned his attention to the ball. Fernando snared the first two Werribee Centrals wickets to set Sunshine on its way to a successful defence. “We got two wickets in the first over through Fernando,” Stone said. “He was on a hat trick. “He was pretty damn close to it, but it was just sliding down leg. “He gets us off to a great start most weeks.” Six of Sunshine’s bowlers were used for five or more overs. With a healthy score on the board, Stone wanted to share the ball around and get some overs into the arms of his bowlers. Centrals were bowled out for 106. “No one bowled more than six overs, so it was a good team effort with the ball.” Sunshine will hit the road to face Williamstown CYMS in a one-day game on Saturday.

In senior division, St Albans made a confident start to the season, beating Sunshine United by seven wickets. Chasing 209 for victory, the Saints passed the target in the 47th over. It was the perfect start to the season for St Albans, who just missed out on the finals last season. Keilor had a nightmare start to the season, losing to Doutta Stars by 145 runs. The Blues declared on 8-197, but they had nowhere near enough runs in the bank. The Stars marched to 9-342 with Hamish Moore leading the way with 194 off just 200 balls, including 28 fours and three sixes. Kaushal Lokuarachchi was the standout Keilor bowler with 5-50. In division 1 west, Deer Park had a hard-fought 55-run victory over Altona Roosters. Alfar Mohammed made a flying start to the season for the Parkers with 70 off 66. In the north section, PEGS suffered a two-wicket loss to St Francis de Sales, despite 51 not out from Shakeem Clarke. In division 3, Saman Gonawala scored 68 in Sunshine Heights’ 107-run win over East Keilor.

Marc Bullen has ended weeks of speculation about his future, re-signing with Western Region Football League division 1 premiers Deer Park for the 2020 season. Bullen agreed to terms with the Lions on Thursday to remain senior coach of a club that will be going for a record-extending eighth premiership in a row next year. While admitting he has been in discussions with other clubs about vacant coaching positions, Bullen felt the time was not right to leave Deer Park. “I think it’s loyalty to people that have been good to me and my family,” he told Star Weekly Weekly. “My bond with the playing group is the key driver behind my decision to stay. “The players have all indicated they want to go again. “If the leader doesn’t want to go again, that’s a break of that bond. “I did have in-depth discussions with a couple of other clubs, but it just felt right to be going again at Deer Park.” Bullen indicated in post-match interviews after Deer Park’s stunning grand final win over Altona last month that he would be weighing up his coaching future. The 37-year-old considered a fresh start and taking a new direction with his coaching, but came to the decision to remain with the Lions for one more season at least. He wants to ensure the Lions are able to sustain their success long after he leaves and has floated a potential succession plan for his position. “While it’s there in front of me, I’m going to take it with both hands,” Bullen said. “It’s a great job, it’s well resourced and the club is set up very, very good off the field. “We’ll look at probably having a succession plan in place over the next 12 months.” Lance Jenkinson
