Sparing one hour of your time could save a life. The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) has identified Melton, Brimbank and the Macedon Ranges as having higher than average suicide rates and it’s calling on the community to help it take action. The network is offering a short online course – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) – designed to help people recognise if someone they know is at risk of suicide. The network’s suicide prevention program officer Kiran Nair said suicide awareness is the ability to have a conversation with somebody and to be able to take action if they identify a sign.

- Kiran Nair “It’s also about having the knowledge to actually identify a sign,” he said. “Things like R U OK? Day are great initiatives, but they’re only one day. Suicide occurs throughout the year, so it’s a conversation that needs to happen throughout the year. “The training aims to bust common myths. “It’s actually safe to ask someone if they’re thinking about suicide if it’s done safely and from there it’s about persuading and linking them to other services to make sure they get help if they are in crisis.” Mr Nair said picking up on signs that someone is struggling is a pivotal first step. “You don’t need to be diagnosed with a mental health condition or illness to take your own life and this helps to recognise those signs,” he said. “Someone might be giving away their possessions, or they might be talking about cherished times that they’ve had out of the blue. The training helps people pick up on these signs, in addition to having the conversation with them. “It’s a really heavy topic, but we need to break through that barrier and stigma so people can have that conversation.” Common misconceptions surrounding suicide are also covered in the module.

“One of the biggest myths is that people who talk about killing themselves don’t mean it and that’s a really wrong one. You shouldn’t underestimate,” Mr Nair said. “The other big myth is that asking someone might put the idea into their head. The evidence

is that asking someone actually leads to better results because it opens up the conversation.” He called on the community to help bring down the suicide rate. “This training is a short online module, it takes about 60 minutes and it’s completely free.

House market in recovery mode By Tate Papworth The Brimbank property market is showing strong signs of recovery, according to two leading real estate agents. Last week the RBA slashed interest rates to a record low 0.75 per cent. Barry Plant Taylors Lakes director James Hatzimoisis said now was the perfect time to get back in the game. “The market has kicked again since the election in May, there’s renewed confidence from buyers and the banks are lending again,” he said.

“What we have seen is a bit of a perfect storm. There’s a chronic shortage in listings, but there’s plenty of buyers, so we’re actually getting some really competitive results. “There’s still this perception that it isn’t a market to sell in, but there’s plenty of buyers, so there’s plenty of demand, but not so much

supply. Last weekend we had nine auctions and all nine sold over reserve.” He said the slowdown in the market was caused by the banks and the government, meaning recovery isn’t a slow burn. “Nothing changed in the economy during this time, but it became harder to borrow, we had the royal commission and there was a loss of confidence.” Ray White St Albans director Shaun Marijanovic said an over-correction had caused the problems, but things had begun to stabilise.

“The brakes were put on too hard, the banks tightened the lending strings and it became incredibly difficult to borrow,” Mr Marijanovic said. “The market is starting to steady, there’s a lot more people looking and turnover is improving, but a lot is going to be dependent on interest rates and the economy.” Mr Marijanovic said that while things were still a little “patchy”, prices had begun to rise and it was the perfect time to buy. “I always say that the best time to buy is when prices stop dropping because you’re obviously not going to lose.”

Residents urged to share views The Brimbank community is being urged to speak up and be heard about major investment coming to Brimbank. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said it was vital the council knew what the community wanted. “Over the next 15 years we will see unprecedented investment in our city, and we want to make sure that the community experiences positive outcomes during and after construction. “Tell us how you think Brimbank can benefit from projects like the Melbourne Airport Rail Link and new development around all of Sunshine, St Albans and other local suburbs.” The establishment of the Sunshine Super Hub, the removal of three level crossings and a number of station upgrades are just some of the projects slated for Brimbank in the near future. Call to help young family By Tate Papworth Friends and family of a young mother who died last week are calling for help for the three young girls she left behind. Helena Broadbent, who was five months pregnant, fell from a car being driven in Keilor Downs. She was rushed to hospital and gave birth to a daughter, who has been named Helena Zoe in her honour, but died several hours later. Ms Broadbent had two young daughters Sophie, 2 and Bella, 1. Ms Broadbent’s brother Paul remembered

her as a loving mother preparing to celebrate daughter Bella’s birthday, which was on Sunday. “Helena was a dedicated mother that did everything in her power for her two girls and she was telling me how excited she was about Bella’s first birthday and to be having another girl.” Katie Gray, a friend of the family, said the loss had hit hard. “The loss of Helena has devastated her family, her friends and left her three little babies without their mother, who was a caring, loving and devoted mum,” she said. “As we can’t take away their heartbreaking

Driver shot

Police shot and arrested a man in Sunshine following a pursuit on September 30. An allegedly stolen tow truck was observed going through red lights and driving erratically. Police pursued the vehicle into Wright Street in Sunshine about 5pm when it crashed into a tree. The driver was shot by police during the arrest and taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Sunshine’s oldest surviving church is 100 this month. The Sunshine Baptist, The Slovak Baptist and GraceWest Bible churches have used the church in that time and pastor Martin Rogers said the building has a colourful history. “The building has been here since 1919. It’s the oldest surviving church in Sunshine. It wasn’t the first church, but it’s the oldest surviving,” he said. “It was brought here from the Broadmeadows army barracks in 1919 and it’s been here ever since.” The building has been used as a church since it was brought to Sunshine, however earlier this decade it fell into a state of disrepair. “It’s a heritage-listed building but it was pretty run down up until we did it up in 2014,

it was falling apart a bit,” Mr Rogers said. “It was really dilapidated, so we took the asbestos cladding off the outside, fixed that area up and then made our way inside.” It took about a year to complete, but Mr Martin said it was worth the effort. “It’s fantastic to see it in this condition for everyone to enjoy. “Two churches use it these days – The Slovak Baptist and GraceWest Bible Church – which is normally 80-90 people on a Sunday morning and a youth group of 30.” The church is hosting a celebration and service on Sunday, October 20 from 2-5pm at 16 Sydney Street, Albion. An 18-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly evaded police in a stolen vehicle in Deer Park on September 30. Police attempted to intercept a vehicle on Ballarat Road when the driver failed to pull over and sped off just after 3pm. He was later arrested and charged with theft of motor vehicle, dangerous driving whilst pursued, reckless conduct endangering life and other traffic-related offences.

Cold beer after lottery win

Hospital in good health By Tate Papworth The expansion of Sunshine Hospital’s emergency department took a giant step forward last week. A new temporary triage and ambulance and emergency services bay were opened to cater for patients while work continues. Entry to the emergency department is now via Majorca Street instead of Furlong Road. The short-term public carpark has also moved and can now be accessed via Majorca Street, rather than Furlong Road. A new internal pathway connects the

emergency department with the main reception. Signs have been erected to help direct foot traffic. The $29.6 million emergency department expansion project is due to be completed by mid-2021. When complete, it will include an extra 31 treatment spaces and a separate area for children, which is expected to see 19,700 patients each year. The number of available emergency treatment spaces at the hospital will more than double from 55 to 120, meaning an additional 59,000 emergency patients will be able to be

treated each year. The upgrades will also bolster the hospital’s mental health services with a new mental health and drug and alcohol centre to be established. The $5.3 million centre will create an additional 12 short stay beds and 12 treatment cubicles. The emergency department redevelopment has long been sought by Western Health. In August last year a Western Health spokesperson told Star Weekly that the hospital’s emergency department was operating beyond its physical capacity, treating more than 250 patients a day.

A Sunshine man “too busy” to check his Lucky Lotteries ticket has 100,000 reasons to smile. The man finally came forward last week to collect his prize almost a month after the September 5 draw. He told officials he was in disbelief. “I’ve been a bit busy over the past few weeks and hadn’t got around to checking the ticket,” he said. “You know how it is, it’s one thing after another and life gets in the way. “It wasn’t until I finally checked it at the newsagency that I realised I’d been carrying a winning ticket around with me the whole time. “I’ve never won anything like this before! I can’t believe it.” The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he hasn’t decided how to spend his winnings, but a beer sounded like a good place to start. “I don’t know yet how I’ll spend it, but I know I’ll have a beer or two this afternoon to celebrate,” he said. “I’ll spend it wisely that’s for sure!” The winning ticket was purchased at Central West Newsagency in Braybrook. Central West Newsagency owner Gino Bertolini said he was thrilled his outlet had sold a major prize-winning entry. “We’ve sold a couple of division one winning entries in the past, but this is our first major prize for a little while so we are thrilled,” Mr Bertolini said. “We are really happy for our customer. Couldn’t have gone to a more deserving person.”

Stony Creek project still in limbo By Tate Papworth The resumption of work on the Stony Creek Transformation Project appears to be imminent. Work on the $11 million project to transform a concrete drain back to a natural wetland hit a standstill earlier this year after costs blew out because of asbestos contamination. The Brimbank council has been lobbying heavily for further funding from the state and federal governments to ensure the full project is delivered.

No official commitment has been made but a spokesperson for the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning last week told Star Weekly they were confident work on the project would resume soon. “The main focus of the Upper Stony Creek Transformation Project right now is cleaning

up asbestos on the site and remediating the area,” the spokesperson said. “To date, around 11,220 cubic metres of material containing asbestos has been found and remediated throughout the retarding basin and channel. “Remaining asbestos within the project area does not pose a risk to the public.” DELWP, Melbourne Water, Development Victoria and City West Water have contributed almost $8 million combined to deliver the project. All say they are conducting ongoing assessments to identify the best way forward.

Brimbank council has for several weeks expected a decision on the project’s future. In July, Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the project extended beyond rehabilitating a waterway. “This is about the west and its people. It’s about cleaning up the historic endemic waste issues that continue to impact on our community. “Brimbank contributes millions of dollars in levy fees to the Sustainability Fund, we carry the burden of landfill and toxic waste issues and get little back in support. “We need to finish the job at Stony Creek.”

Mr Chan took up Othello, a strategy board game for two, also called Reversi, as a child because he was “fascinated” by the game. “I always played when I was a kid on the computer,” he said. “Then I found out there was a competition in Australia, in St Kilda, and I was happy to play against a real human being. “When I was called up to play for Australia I thought it was a great opportunity.” His philosophy on life and the game are one in the same – “It ain’t over till it’s over”. “I play many chess games but Othello, which is a highly abstract game, is always my favourite,” Mr Chan said. “Othello teaches me how to see things in the

long term perspective, practise to be patient and calm, and accept that nothing is permanent in life. “Unlike chess, you don’t simply take your rival’s discs permanently. “In Othello, you only flip them and turn them into yours temporarily. “You only know if you have those discs permanently when the game is completed. “We can also apply this on life that sometimes we think we have the upper hand, get carried away too soon then fail miserably; or we think we are down and out but we make the greatest comeback.” Mr Chan is fundraising to help with his travel expenses. New life for police hut By Tate Papworth A reminder of a time gone by is set to be returned to its former glory. The historic Keilor Plains Police hut will be rebuilt at the Harricks Cottage site in Keilor Park. Built from prefabricated iron, the hut was imported during the 1850s during the Gold Rush, to form part of the Keilor Plains Police Station. Keilor Historical Society president Susan Jennison said it remained at the Keilor Plains site until vandals struck about five years ago.

“It was up at Keilor Plains, but had to be shifted for its own safety,” Ms Jennison said. “Vandals got to it and we knew if we left it much longer it would be destroyed.” The structure was dismantled and placed at the Harrick’s Cottage site, where it has remained disassembled since. However years of campaigning have paid off in the form of a $200,000 Living Heritage grant, which will be used to restore the structure to its former glory. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said it was a great outcome. “The hut is an important connection to the Gold Rush period, and it’s great the restoration can now be undertaken,” Cr Congreve said. “Council will now plan for the restoration and interpretation of the hut in accordance with the timeframes required by Heritage

Victoria who administer the Living Heritage Program.” After the project is completed, the Keilor Historical Society will manage the hut and make it available for the community to learn about its heritage. Ms Jennison said the public display should

have a number of features. “We’re hoping to have an internal electronic display of people going to the goldfields,” she said. “We’re also hoping to put in some artifacts from when the police were first put here to show what it was like.”

New chief to raise funds Western Health’s fundraising arm has a new chair. Karen Bolinger, the former chief executive of the Melbourne Convention Bureau, will take up the role of chair of the Western Health Foundation board from mid-October. Western Health board chair Bronwyn Pike said it was a great coup. “Karen is a visionary thinker with extensive networks, high level strategic planning capacity and a track record of strengthening brands and increasing economic impact,” Ms Pike said. Ms Bolinger will replace Bob Scarborough who led the foundation from its establishment in 2012. One of Mr Scarborough’s more significant achievements was providing support for the $2.5 million Williamstown Hospital redevelopment, which was funded by the foundation. It also contributed more than $1.2 million to the newly opened Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Notably, the foundation recently funded a $2.5 million redevelopment of Williamstown Hospital’s central visitor and patient areas. On August 6, 2019, Anna CAMERON failed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court to answer charges including threatening to inflict serious injury, assaulting an emergency services worker whilst on duty and failing to answer bail. A warrant was issued for her arrest. Police are seeking information as to CAMERON’S current whereabouts. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Jennifer IONG failed to appear at three separate hearings at Melbourne Magistrates Court on the May 22, 2019, Heidelberg Magistrates Court on June 12, 2019 and Sunshine Magistrates Court on June 14, 2019. Warrants were issued for offences including theft of motor vehicle, contravene conditions of a community corrections order, theft and possession of a drug of dependence. Brimbank police impounded 14 vehicles during the AFL grand final long weekend. During a 30-minute period on Thursday, September 26, police impounded four vehicles at Keilor Lodge. Between noon and 12.30pm, police pulled over a green BMW wanted for a number of evade police incidents on the Calder Freeway. A 19-year-old man was arrested, interviewed and released, but is expected to be charged on summons with driving offences. A short time later a 48-year-old man was clocked doing 128km/h in a 70km/h zone on Green Gully Road. Police attempted to pull over the vehicle but the driver refused and fled. Eventually the Taylors Lakes man pulled over and his car was impounded. A motorcyclist also had his bike impounded after being caught doing 130km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Calder Freeway. The fourth driver had his car impounded after being nabbed doing 117km/h in a 70km/h zone on Green Gully Road. There were a number of other offences committed across the weekend. Police wrote tickets for 194 speeding offences, 46 disobey signs/signals, 15 disqualified drivers, 17 drug drivers and two drink drivers. Thirty unregistered vehicles, 22 mobile phone offences and five unlicensed drivers were also detected.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said it was disappointing to see so many people make the conscious decision to drink or take drugs and get behind the wheel of a car across the state. “Everyone wants to have a good time on the footy grand final weekend, but unfortunately due to poor choices some people were either hit with a fine, lost demerits or had their car impounded,” he said. “Saying this, the majority of people did the right thing and were able to enjoy the weekend for all it had to offer. “But we must remember the families and extended communities of the two people who lost their lives.” Across the state police detected 8702 traffic offences and 746 crime offences during the four days of the operation. Police performed 110,209 preliminary breath tests and 3161 drug tests in the four days.

Carers left in the dark over NDIS By Tate Papworth Two leading voices for carers in Brimbank have questioned whether the community is better off – a year after the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was rolled out across Brimbank and Melton. Despina Havelas is the primary carer for her son and says she was forced to leave her job to care for him and navigate the “mountain of paperwork” required to access the NDIS. She said the NDIS has a number of positive points, but a lack of communication or

innovative thought has stymied any progress. “I find it strange that they’re celebrating a year of NDIS in Brimbank when the office for the provider, the Brotherhood of St Laurence, wasn’t actually set up until February of this year. “For me there’s been increased work for carers in terms of paperwork. I’m meeting lots of carers burnt out from paperwork. “It hasn’t been negative, but information-wise it’s been heavy. You spend all day googling things, it’s all on the carer to find things.” Ms Havelas has long called for a space to be

made available for carers to meet and pass on information. “NDIS supplies the money, but the [Brimbank] council needs to change their structure and support,” she said. “There needs to be more physical activities within Brimbank, particular for people on NDIS. “We want people to feel part of a community, a group. “I’d like to see more local activities for participants … more programs, which can be between organisations and council.”

Carer Sangeeta Sharma also questioned the way the scheme is being implemented in Brimbank. “Too many excuses as to why we can’t do things and why things are impossible,” Ms Sharma said. “There’s nothing happening, there’s no progressive, innovative thought. We send the council and provider information on the many different things happening at other councils, but they don’t do anything.” More than 4000 people have accessed the NDIS in Brimbank and Melton in the past 12 months.

Chemist’s Own chips in Taylors Lakes Pharmacy is asking the community to help it support a small early learning centre in Kealba. The pharmacy is taking part in Chemists’ Own’s Help Us Help Our Local Community initiative. The initiative involves pharmacies raising money through the sale of Chemists’ Own childrens range and donations, which then go back to a community organisation of the pharmacy’s choice. Taylors Lakes Pharmacy retail manager Carmen Ewens said the money raised would go to Kealba-based early learning centre, Cradles to Crayons. “This is the second year we’re doing this. It’s about promoting community awareness and doing our bit to help out,” she said. “Children are the number one priority in my eyes, especially being a mum. Cradles to Crayons is only a small centre in Kealba, so

hopefully we can raise some money so they can purchase some things they need. “A lot of the mums actually shop here, so it’s nice to be able to give back.” Last year, 332 pharmacies participated in the program, raising more than $10,000 for local early learning centres. Chemists’ Own brand manager Stephanie Calapa said it was amazing to see so many pharmacies add their support. “Early learning centres were an obvious choice to be the beneficiaries of Help Us, in light of all the wonderful work they do in caring for the next generation,” Ms Calapa said. “We are delighted to see that so many pharmacies are keen to participate.” Tate Papworth Patrichia Salameh with some of the Chemist’s Own childrens range. A 17-year-old Sunshine youth suffered a shattered pelvis and other injuries as a result of a hit-run accident last Friday week. The youth, David Learmonth, of Cornwall Road was hit by a car as he was riding his bicycle in Hampshire Road at about 9.30pm. David, an apprentice cook, is pictured at the Western General Hospital where he is expected to be in traction for at least six weeks.

The Italo-Australian Social Club is on the verge of financial collapse and Sunshine Council is facing a bill of between $400,000 and $700,000, according to town hall sources. The club is believed to have total loan debts of around $1 million to two major banks and is likely to be forced out of its Furlong Rd building by the ANZ Bank, which is said to be owed up to $700,000 in principal and accumulated interest.

The City of Brimbank had the strongest manufacturing industry workforce in the region, but Keilor shared the highest suicide rate in the west. A new report, released last week, reveals Brimbank’s social profile compared to the rest of Melbourne and closely comparing it with other western suburbs municipalities.

Health service providers in the west say needle and syringe programs need to be expanded, particularly after hours. While there are many programs to service other western suburbs, coverage is patchy in Brimbank.

He spoke with Tate Papworth about community, personal growth and footy. You’ve been the Keilor coach since 2008. I imagine there’s been some significant offers to go elsewhere in that time, what’s kept you around?

It’s not about other offers. For me it’s about the fulfilment, being a hub of the community. One of the great joys is watching boys grow into men and living out dreams like playing TAC Cup football and higher honours.

We move on pretty quick. It’s hard to stand still in this business and if you do, you get knocked over pretty quick.

We saw the village covered in red, white and blue colours during grand final week, that must really make you feel like you’re part of the community.

The club as a whole has grown enormously in recent years, particularly with the explosion of women’s football. What’s your vision for the future?

I think the community know that a lot of work is put in place to give the next generation opportunities. Everyone at the club is doing things for the right reasons, we’re big on developing the person, which then develops the player, then the team.

We’d like to consolidate and grow those numbers, which might mean a secondary oval. When you’ve got about 27 teams going from Auskick through to seniors, it’s hard to co-ordinate time to give everyone the opportunities they need when you’ve only got one oval.

What about the grand final win. Did it provide you with the most satisfaction? Watching a group of young men grow game to game was a big thing. We were asking a group of 18 year-olds, on occasions, to go out and perform, sometimes under tremendous adversity on a weekly basis. We had some injuries this year, in some cases some quite serious injuries and these guys, while feeling

We were pretty strong on the fact we needed that. There’s a lot of choices people face today and if we’re able to provide a good choice in playing a sport, then it’s something that should be supported.

St Albans ruck tops league By Ewen McRae David Kovacevic is adamant he did nothing differently this year, but the Western Region Football League thought differently, awarding him the division one best and fairest. The St Albans ruckman helped carry his team to the brink of finals, and his efforts did not go unnoticed by league judges. He collected 21 votes at the WRFL awards night to finish four ahead of Altona’s Steven Kennedy and Spotswood’s David Iaccarino in the Barry Priest Medal count. With St Albans holding its own awards night at the same time as the league it was a whirlwind night for the big man, who said he had no expectations of polling so well. “I thought there were a lot of pretty good players that would pip me,” Kovacevic said. “I felt like I had a pretty consistent year, but playing against some of those other guys I didn’t really expect to be beating them. “I think it was my most consistent year. I don’t think I was a superstar by any stretch, but I think every week this year I was able to play to a similar standard. “Maybe in previous years I’d play well for a couple, and then drop off for a bit, that didn’t happen this year.” Kovacevic said experience played a big part in helping him reach these new heights, but he had done nothing different in pre-season or the way he played from previous years. “I think just being a bit older and wiser helps, especially in the ruck,” he said. “It was nothing out of the ordinary really,

just being a bit smarter with it and doing my job each week.” Playing in a winning side also helped, with St Albans jumping from just four wins in each of the past two seasons, to 10 wins in 2019. The improvements across the board from the side had them in finals contention for much of the year, but three losses in the last four rounds saw them slip to sixth. “It was a bit disappointing to end that way, especially with the way we were looking in the middle of the year,” Kovacevic said. “We beat Deer Park and Altona in the mid-point of the year, so we were looking good, but I think we ran out of puff at the end of the season and it was probably fair where we finished. “I think we found out where we’re at, and what it takes to beat those top teams. More consistency, and more fitness I think is our big goal now.” With Deer Park claiming a record seventh straight division one flag this year, Kovacevic said the whole competition wanted to be the team to end the dynasty. “Everyone wants to beat them and be the team to end their run, but they’re a step above at the moment,” he said. “They’ve set a high standard and it’s up to everyone to catch up to them. We beat them once, but they gave us a touch-up at the end of the year, so it evens out. “I think we’ve bridged the gap from two years ago, but we’ve still got plenty of work to do to catch them.”

SPORT New leadership team ready to build on Storm success Sydenham-Hillside is ready to step up in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 Roy Picone Shield competition. Having won the division 4 premiership last season, the Storm has gone up a grade. New president Warren Hackney said they were keen to build on last season. “We’re looking at a new challenge,” he said. “We managed to get pretty much the whole first XI team back and we want to build on that. “Hopefully we’ll be competitive this year and see what happens.” Hackney, who was part of last season’s premiership team, said how the side would go would be a little bit of an unknown, having not faced any of these teams before. He said for them, the biggest worry was to focus on what they could control and go from there. “Hopefully we find ourselves in the mix.” The Storm have a new leadership structure on the field, with last year’s leadership group of

Dane Currency and Peter Magafas both on the move. West Indian Alston Bobb will be playing-coach for Sydenham-Hillside. He’s played a lot of first class cricket back home and is strong with both bat and ball and is known for his spin bowling. Ben Green, who was a standout for the Storm last season, has stepped up to captain the side. “Ben is a local guy and he has stepped up,” Hackney said. “He was in team of the year and had a really good season. We’re looking forward to him having a similar season personally and it will help the team. “We’ve got the new leadership structure and we’re confident that it will work well.” In a bonus for the side, Chandima Prasad, who was club champion a couple of years ago, returns. Hackney said the inclusion of Prasad and Bobb would fill the losses. “We’re looking at making one or two further

additions around the next couple of weeks,” he said. “We’re feeling like we’ve prepared well and recruited well.” As well as taking on the president’s role, Hackney will coach the women’s side. It will be a different looking side to the one that has won the past two premierships. “We had some circumstances in the off season with some key personnel departing,” he said. “I felt it was an area that I was comfortable in and that I thought I could contribute. “With the loss of personnel, it depleted us somewhat, but we’ve done some work to build the numbers back up. “We’ve lost a bit of experience … We’re not expecting to win flags, it’s about enjoyment and improvement.” Sydenham-Hillside will field an under-13 girls team for the first time. Proud to be a westie By Ewen McRae Lucas Rocci is keeping a level head, but he could be on the verge of continuing a strong recent trend from the NAB League. The Western Jets captain recently won the Morrish Medal as the best and fairest player in the state under-18 competition, and despite missing out on selection for the national championships and not receiving an invite to the AFL draft combines, he is keeping his fingers crossed for a fairytale draft night. “I’ve just got to wait it out and see what happens from here,” Rocci said. “There’s definitely some interest there that I can’t really say much about, but I just hope I can get on a list and show what I can do.” If he is picked up, it will continue a strong recent run of Morrish medallists making an impact in the AFL – Clayton Oliver, Hugh McCluggage, Jack Higgins and Liam Stocker all won the award on their way to being drafted in the past four seasons. Oliver, now a two-time best and fairest winner at Melbourne, also missed national championship and combine selection. “There’s so many stories of players missing out in under-18s and getting drafted and having success, so that does give me hope,” Rocci said. “Look at someone like Kane Lambert. Missed getting drafted, came back and now he’s a two-time premiership player at Richmond, so we’ll just see what happens from here. “I took a few weeks off to recharge the batteries, but I’m back in some gym and running work now to keep myself ready.” Rocci put together a stellar year for the Jets, flourishing in the second half when he moved to half-back to utilise his elite disposal. He was selected on the bench in the team of the year, but said he was shocked when he started to creep up the leaderboard in the medal count as well. “It was pretty amazing, because I wasn’t expecting to win anything when I went along,” he said. “Missing Vic Metro was disappointing, but anyone who misses has a bit of extra motivation. I just looked at it as ‘footy is footy’ and just keep playing and see where it takes you. “All we wanted to do was get better as a team and as people, and I think everyone in our side can say we did that. The medal is just the icing on the cake.” Rocci is the first Jets player to take home the award, and he said he was proud to show that the western suburbs can produce. “It’s definitely special, and I’m very honoured,” he said. “I look at the young blokes coming through the program and the western

region, and it shows them that anything is possible coming out of the west. “Some people look down on the western region as a less competitive region, so winning that medal I think shows that we can match it with anyone.” Rocci is the October nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award.

The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Rocci will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist him in achieving his sports goals.

United ready for A-League opener Western United has finalised its preparations for its first A-League game this weekend, playing out a hard-fought draw with Western Sydney. The A-League’s newest club travelled from its Caroline Springs training base to Geelong to take on the Wanderers at GMHBA Stadium, and despite leading for almost the entire match it allowed a late equaliser and had to settle for a draw. It was the team’s final warm-up game ahead of its inaugural match in the big time against Wellington on Sunday afternoon. Former Socceroo Scott McDonald wasted little time in getting the game on United’s terms, finding space in the box to drill home the first goal of the match after just two minutes. United had the better of play in the opening half, with McDonald coming close just five minutes later, and Italian Alessandro Diamanti also curling in a good shot only to see it tipped over the crossbar by the keeper. United saw its lead disappear in the 80th minute, when the Wanderers found the back of the net with a low shot from just inside the box. Despite both sides pressing for the winner the scores were locked at full-time. While the club is preparing for its first outing for points this weekend, there is also plenty of action off the pitch with the appointment of Chris Pehlivanis as chief executive of the football club. Pehlivanis joins United from AFL club Essendon, where he held the role of chief financial officer, and has also previously worked with Football Federation Australia. He said he was excited to be joining the fledgling club and helping to grow the game. “I am honoured to be part of the next stage of the organisation’s growth,” he said. “There is so much potential and … I am looking forward to playing my part in building our great game with our vibrant and valued community across Melbourne’s west.” United will play Wellington Phoenix at 4pm, October 13. United has runs on the board in tight contest St Albans and Sunshine United are evenly poised at the end of the first day of the season, with the two sides trading blows throughout an enthralling day. As the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s senior division launched on Saturday, Sunshine United battled through some difficult pitch and outfield conditions to get to stumps at 8-192. The umpires called off play early due to bad light, with 67 overs bowled for the day. St Albans coach Rob Nikolic said he was happy with his bowlers, but equally impressed with the way United applied themselves with the bat. “The pitch was quite hard to score runs on, so their score at the moment is pretty good,” Nikolic said. “Early on we created a few half chances, some edges either side of slips and gully, and then they dug in and took their time and they’ve got a decent score to show for it at this point. “Having said that, I thought we bowled pretty well. The openers did well early, and then our spinners kept things tight through the middle overs, which is pleasing.”

United won the toss at Kings Park, and Scott Dalrymple (19) and Adam Duxson (29) put on 40 runs for the first wicket before Dalrymple was run out. Sunshine was able to avoid losing wickets in clumps, with six all getting a start without going on to a big score. With Simon Lambert (1-23 off 15 overs) keeping things tight at one end, Geeth Alwis was able to reap the rewards at the other as he started the year off with a deserved 5-45. United keeper Sangaran Nandhalal was a mainstay through the middle portion of the innings with a well crafted 57 not out, and will be crucial in determining the visitors final total when play resumes this week. Leigh Sheridan was also good with 40. United will have seven more overs to bat this week, giving both sides 74 overs for the match. Nikolic said the match was evenly poised, and hoped the batters could kick off what he hopes to be a successful season. “If we can get them out quickly that would be ideal, but if not we’ve got to restrict them,” he said.

“When we bat I think it’s about being patient, and if we’re smart and bat our overs I think we’ve got enough good players to get the runs. “On paper I think we look a better team this year, but on paper doesn’t mean anything when the games start. “Last year we didn’t know what to expect coming up into senior division, but this year I think there’s a real buzz around the club that we can have some success.” Ewen McRae

Taylors Lakes’ 2nd XI and 3rd XI will kick off their seasons this weekend, after grounds were not ready for play on the opening Saturday. The 2nd XI will play Mt Waverley, while the 3rds will face Coburg. The 4th XI got a game started against Coburg, but face a challenge to salvage a tough day. After sending Coburg in to bat, Taylors Lakes was able to take regular wickets but struggled to keep the run rate under control. It eventually dismissed the hosts for 193 in the 64th over, but the Lions stumbled to 6-43 at stumps.

Kealba-Green Gully will resume on 0-38 this weekend, as its North West Metropolitan Cricket Association George Luscombe Shield clash with Northern Lions moved along at a swift pace. Kealba Green Gully sent the hosts in to bat, and while the runs flowed all day the wickets also fell at regular intervals as the Lions were dismissed for 237 after 72 overs. Lions up to challenge By Ewen McRae Taylors Lakes will need to pull off a remarkable comeback to claim a win this weekend, after struggling in difficult conditions on Saturday. The Lions hosted Mt Waverley in the opening round of the sub-district cricket season, and struggled to adapt to a sticky wicket as they were bowled out for just 111 in 39 overs. Mt Waverley then moved to the brink of victory as the conditions improved, finishing the day on 1-83 at stumps to have first innings points in their sights. Taylors Lakes captain Jarrod Wakeling said they didn’t get much luck coming their way, but paid credit to the visitors on the day. “I think we were essentially outplayed and outclassed,” he said. “Mt Waverley probably had the better of the conditions in terms of their bowling, and to their credit they bowled exactly the way that you should on a wicket like that. “They gave us very few bad balls, but with our 44 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 8, 2019

batting we weren’t patient enough to overcome that, and at times we played some shots that weren’t required. “They bowled some bad balls that we hit straight to fielders, so there’s a bit of luck in that, and the conditions improved for batting when they got in, but that’s cricket.” Mt Waverley won the toss and sent the Lions in to bat, with the decision paying off straight away as Marcus Just (0), Yannick Fernandes (1) and Michael Brne (7) all departed cheaply. New recruit Marrodon Bend (16) combined with Lachlan Marr (36) to stem the flow of wickets, with the pair chewing up some overs with a steady partnership, but another run of wickets through the middle of the innings stymied any momentum. Vishesh Bansal made 25 off just 15 balls as wickets tumbled around him late in the innings, but the visitors were clinical in ensuring they would not have to chase a big total. When their chance came with the ball, the Lions players created a number of chances, and

beat the bat several times, but were unable to generate the run of wickets they needed. Wakeling broke through late in the day to dismiss Michael Millier for 42, but the hosts face a tough challenge to turn things around. Wakeling said they would come out hard this week to try and get a result, but was also positive about the season ahead. “The game will be decided in the first 10 overs of the day, so we’ll have to go hard to try and run through them and then reassess as the day goes on,” he said. “We’re taking everything week by week, but we expect to be competitive in every game we play. “If we apply ourselves and do everything that we’re capable of then we have the potential to win a number of games and potentially play finals, but I think if we look too far towards the end of the season we might get a bit ahead of ourselves. Individual improvement will correlate to team improvement and the results that we’re looking for.”
