Call for ‘risky’ business By Tate Papworth A Brimbank councillor has questioned whether the council is taking enough risks with its finances. The council last week announced an operating surplus of $36.3 million for the 2018-19 financial year, but Cr John Hedditch questioned whether the council’s low-risk approach was the way to go. “These results will place council’s overall financial sustainability in the ‘low’ risk category,” he said. “This is a question I’ve continually asked, but I will keep asking it. Does the CEO think,

going forward, this is too conservative as a risk grading for a community with such high needs?” Cr Hedditch said that in his opinion Brimbank had been short-changed by both state and federal governments, leaving the council to pick up the ball. “It would be over-arched by the fact that Brimbank, as one of Melbourne’s most needy communities, is being asset and cash-stripped by the Victorian government through things like school land sales and pokies taxes and fines – to name three, yet receives very little financial support from the Victorian or federal treasuries.

“This forces a rethink on how best to make things happen locally while not sinking the ship financially.” Cr Hedditch acknowledged key projects such as the Melbourne Airport Rail Link will benefit Brimbank, but said he’d like to see investment made on much-needed local projects as well as major metro ones. He said other options needed to be considered. “Council itself has been running a low-risk financial strategy while the need for community services and infrastructure has been growing. “Council is doing some very good things but in my opinion could, and should, be doing more and taking more risk with the council finances

as there is no sign of any significant support from Victorian or federal governments. “Brimbank residents and ratepayers in my personal opinion should support council to pick up the ‘risk’ ball because the Victorian and federal governments have shown they definitely won’t support this community in a fair way.” He highlighted a lack of funds for the St Albans Leisure Centre and the Upper Stony Creek project stalemate as other examples. “It’s sad to have to push for a needy community like Brimbank to take a more risky financial profile but what other option is there?”

Hospital delivers new baby unit By Tate Papworth

Cats up for the kindest cut Veterinary staff at the Lost Dogs Home’s mobile cat neutering van were purring with satisfaction last week. Tiny Tina, a six-month old domestic short-haired cat, became the 4000th cat to be desexed at the van based at the Westvale Community Centre. Making the figure even more impressive is the fact that the van has only been at the location for three years on a part-time basis. The mobile clinic, staffed by vets, works with local councils to offer discounted cat desexing and microchipping, travelling to urban and regional areas to meet demand. Lost Dogs Home director of operations Liz Walker said it was imperative that cat owners got their cat desexed. “With female cats breeding from 16 weeks of age, the Lost Dogs Home urges Victorians to be responsible cat owners and have their cats desexed, either at the local vet or via the Lost Dogs,” she said. She said the mobile van had already had a massive impact. “In three years, our mobile clinic has greatly impacted cat issues in local suburbs including cat abandonment, decreased impoundment costs, and impacted feline behavior issues such as the spreading of disease, fighting, breeding, and noise.” Tate Papworth

A state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit has opened at the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The unit is the first of its kind in the western suburbs and the fifth such unit in Victoria. It features four cots, which will increase to 10 in the future. Premier Daniel Andrews said it will give parents in the west peace of mind in times of need. “As a parent, I know the precious first few days, weeks and months can be scary – especially when something’s not right,” he said. “Now, new mums and dads in Melbourne’s west will have the world-class care they need closer to home.” The NICU is where critically sick newborns are cared for. Specialist doctors and nurses provide life-saving support for premature and sick babies. Previously, families with sick or premature babies in the western suburbs were transferred to either the Royal Women’s Hospital or the Royal Children’s Hospital for urgent care. The Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s opened its doors in May. The $200 million hospital includes 20 maternity delivery rooms, 237 beds, 39 special care nursery cots, four theatres and additional clinics. The government estimates about 7000 babies will be delivered annually at the hospital by 2026. Sunshine Hospital is also set to undergo a major redevelopment with a $29 million upgrade to the emergency department. The upgrades will add an extra 31 treatment spaces and include a separate area for children. About 19,700 children are expected to be seen each year in the children-only area.

Young tradies risk lung disease By Tate Papworth Dry cutting of materials which may contain silica is now banned in Victoria. Silica is commonly found in kitchen and bathroom benchtops and is a growing cause of lung disease, particularly among young tradies who inhale the crystalline silica dust. Member for Sydenham Natalie Hutchins, in her new role as the parliamentary secretary for Workplace Safety, said banning dry cutting and protecting workers was essential. “Unfortunately 15 Victorians have already

died from silicosis and many more young tradies are facing debilitating illness,” she said. “Unfortunately most people diagnosed are young men in their 30s and there’s a significant over representation in the western suburbs. “Silica is found in kitchen and bathroom benchtops and with our ever-expanding new

housing estates and housing renovation boom more tradies than ever are working with this product.” Ms Hutchins said it was vital that anyone who may have come in contact with the product gets tested. “We are currently offering free health screenings to those that might be at risk,” she said. “It’s becoming a real issue, particularly in the western suburbs. The other problem with it is symptoms are relatively common for other ailments such as colds.”

“We’re also seeing that a lot of those diagnoses are new migrants. We’re urging anyone who might have come in contact with it to get checked. “Once diagnosed the only way to survive is a lung transplant, otherwise it’s a death sentence.” Symptoms can include coughs, fatigue and chest pain. The government is also leading a push to develop a national silicosis strategy. WorkSafe received 28 claims for silica-related conditions in 2018 and 15 workers have died from the disease since 1985.

Motorcyclist dies

A motorcyclist died after allegedly fleeing police last week. Police intercepted a motorcycle on Kings Road, Kings Park shortly before 11am last Thursday, but as they approached the bike on foot it sped off in a southerly direction. Police did not pursue the motorcycle. They later found the bike and rider near the intersection of McLeod Road. It is believed the male rider lost control of the motorcycle and struck a pole.

Centre with a difference Sydenham has a new childcare centre. Kids Kingdom Learning opened its doors last month and staff are excited about what the future holds. Early childhood consultant Katrina Kutschker said that while the centre is still young, it’s already developing its own identity. “We opened about four weeks ago and it really is a beautiful centre, newly refurbished. “We went on our first field trip the other day to Scienceworks, which is something we’ll look to do a lot more going forward.” She said management had established a unique plan to cater for the entire family.

A 21-year-old man was shot in the face during a home invasion in Taylors Lakes. Police allege three offenders attended a property at Robertsons Road about 11.50pm on September 15 and were confronted by the homeowners. The trio demanded the family’s car keys and discharged a firearm towards two of the homeowners as they left. One of the men sustained a minor injury.

All aboard for rail design plans By Tate Papworth The Brimbank council has drafted 10 design principles to guide the design and delivery of the upgrade of the Ballarat train line through Ardeer and Deer Park. The upgrade will include the removal of level crossings at Fitzgerald Road, Sunshine West; Station Road, Deer Park; and Robinsons Road, Deer Park. There would also be significant upgrades to stations on the line including constructing a new,

elevated, Deer Park station and a new station for Ardeer. The council wants the upgrades to include station precincts that maximise benefits for the community and create a sense of place with a distinctive character specific to Brimbank. Cr Sam David said the principles were vitally import and urged the community to have their say. “The draft urban design principles will be used by council to inform all discussions with the state government during the planning, design and delivery of the level crossing

removals project and upgrades,” he said. Other key principles include maximising economic development, integrating bicycle connections, minimising physical, and visual and acoustic impacts.

To maximise economic opportunities design teams would be encouraged to locate their offices in Sunshine, construction crews would be encouraged to shop locally, and there would be a push for employment of local workers. There will also be a priority placed on walking, cycling and public transport access to the stations ahead of private vehicles. The design principles will go out for community consultation for four weeks before a further report incorporating responses is taken back to the council.

Tees, tips and Tim Tams There’s been a spike in the number of women hitting the fairway at the Keilor Public Golf Course. The Kangaroo Plains Golf Academy, which is based at the course, recently held a free women’s clinic to support Women’s Health Week. Coach Scott Wearne said there was a terrific turnout. “About a dozen ladies turned up and all had a lot of fun,” he said. “It went for a couple of hours and the Tim Tams were certainly enjoyed afterwards. It was a great day.” Mr Wearne said he hopes the number of female golfers at Keilor continues to grow. “We’ve got over 20 female members at the moment, but we’d love to see that jump to 100 ladies coming when the warmer weather hits. “There was a bit of a drop in the number of ladies playing the sport, but I think now it’s being realised that this is a sport for all

nationalities and all abilities. It’s not about what you can’t do, it’s what you can do.” To help promote the sport, Mr Wearne will be hosting a four-week clinic for ladies throughout October. “We’ll meet for two hours on Tuesdays and cover all aspects of golf – driving, chipping and eating Tim Tams. “Women are really great to coach, they listen well and aren’t afraid to have a bit of a laugh at themselves. “I’m really looking forward to it. Brimbank fights for Stony Creek By Tate Papworth A stalemate surrounding the Upper Stony Creek rejuvenation project continues. Work on the $11 million project to transform a concrete drain back to a natural wetland hit a standstill earlier this year after costs blew out because of asbestos contamination. The council has been calling on both the state and federal governments to come to the party with funding to help complete the project, however no money has been forthcoming. Earlier this month, students at neighbouring

St Albans Heights and Albion primary schools shared their hopes for the future of Upper Stony Creek through art projects. They drew pictures of what they hope the site will look like and presented them to Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve. Cr Congreve said it was great to see young residents take an interest. “It’s fair to say the impact of stopping work at the Upper Stony Creek Transformation Project goes well beyond the surrounding cyclone fence,” she said. “Since works to rehabilitate the 1.2-kilometre

stretch of Upper Stony Creek came to a standstill in July we’ve been talking to the community about the importance of the project. “We’ve visited primary schools near the Upper Stony Creek site and spoken to students about the project and what it would achieve for the environment and the local community. “It’s great to see the next generation show such passion for an important local issue by putting their support – and art skills – behind this campaign.” Work on the project began in April 2018, bringing together all three levels of government.

Cr Congreve said it was vital that the spirit of co-operation was once again shown for the community and local students. “We need to show them their future – and place they call home – is important,” she said. “We’ll be delivering these drawings, along with our community petition, to the Victorian government as we continue our efforts to ‘Save Stony Creek’.” To support the campaign, Brimbank council has set up a Victorian Parliament petition which can be accessed via Brimbank.vic.gov. au/savestonycreek

Change for the better Caroline Springs Football Club’s facelift is complete, following the opening of female-friendly changerooms last week. The upgrades follow a joint investment from Melton council and the state government, with representatives from both on hand for the official opening on September 18. Club president Terry Azzopardi said the addition of women’s teams, and the subsequent new changerooms, had transformed the club for the better. “The growth in the club has been through the women’s side of it,“ Mr Azzopardi said. “These changerooms just complete the footy club. When you’ve got women and men playing on the same days it’s just nice for them to have their own space, making it easier to manage and also just making everyone feel welcome at the club. “We’ve got 120 women and girls playing at the club now, and it’s changed the dynamics of

the club for the better.” Melton council contributed $465,700 towards the upgrades, with the state government adding $500,000. Melton mayor Bob Turner said he was proud to see local facilities helping female athletes pursue their dreams. “It’s fantastic to open another facility that puts women and girls on an equal playing field at local sports clubs,” Cr Turner said. “There are so many talented and ambitious female athletes in the City of Melton, and we want to ensure we have the facilities to support them and their sporting goals.” Ewen McRae

Cricketer on the rise By Tate Papworth A Caroline Springs all-rounder is shaping up to be a name to watch in the future. Jackson Martin has been selected to represent Victoria in the 12-and-under school boys cricket team, which will compete for the national championship in Adelaide this November. To make the squad, Jackson had to go through six months of trials which were held across 17 regions and had more than 1000 children participate. Jackson said it was a shock when he got the call-up. “Dad told me I’d been selected and I didn’t know what to say, I was very excited and a little overwhelmed,” Jackson said. “It’s definitely the highlight of my cricketing career so far.” Making the achievement even more remarkable is the fact that at just 10 years of age, Jackson is the youngest person ever to be selected to play for a Victorian 12-and-under side. He credits practice and his father’s coaching for much of his success. “My dad is my coach, so I’ve had a bat or ball in my hand for most of my life,” he said. “We have a little net in the backyard and I spend hours each night out there practising. “If I’m not using the net, I’m throwing a ball up against the wall and hitting it.” While Jackson is a talented left arm off-spin bowler, he says he prefers batting. “I definitely enjoy batting more, I move around the order a bit, but I really enjoy opening the batting.” Jackson Martin will represent Victoria in the 12-and-under school boys cricket team.

Albion station gets makeover Albion station is about to undergo a $900,000 upgrade. Brimbank council is set to begin works to improve access to the western side of the station and improve safety. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said residents, cyclists and motorists will all benefit from the upgrades. “The project will include a new roundabout and raised pedestrian crossing at Sydney Street. This will ensure safer travel for people walking, cycling and driving to the station,” she said. “We’ll also be planting more shade trees, landscaping and adding better lighting to create a welcoming and pedestrian-friendly environment, all while making it easier and safer to get around.” Some disruption will be necessary while works are carried out, including temporary closure along Derrimut Street until mid-October. Further closures to Sydney Street and the station carpark will be required in December. Work was expected to start this week and be finished by the end of the year. The $900,000 upgrade is jointly funded by Brimbank council ($800,000) in partnership with the Victorian government’s Public Safety Infrastructure Fund ($100,000). The busy station has been receiving a lot of love in recent times. In July, the Albion Stationeers were given permission to conduct regular clean-ups around the station. Tate Papworth

Did you know that the City of Melton is home to 170 playgrounds, kilometres of walking and cycling trails and its own botanic garden? In a widespread City like ours, there are so many hidden outdoor gems to explore.

It’s hard to believe, but Council is already starting its 2020/2021 budgeting process; kicking things off early so that residents have plenty of time to share their ideas about what projects they think should be included in next year’s budget.

It’s your chance to tell us what you think should be included in the Budget, and put your project on our radar.

We’re keen to hear from community and sporting groups, not-for-profit organisations and individuals who have a great idea for a project that would benefit the residents of our City.

Held throughout October, the Festival offers a range of activities suited to every interest and skill level.

You can submit your idea to Council at melton.vic.gov.au/budgetinput until 5pm, Monday 30 September.

If you’re looking for big and exciting play equipment like tall towers and spiral slides, visit Navan Park in Harkness, or Frontier Park in Aintree where you’ll also find a water play area and rope climbing.

Submitters also have the option to present their ideas to Council in person, so be sure to indicate this when making your submission online. Engagement sessions will be held on 8 October (Melton) and 9 October (Caroline Springs).

Council is committed to creating beautiful open spaces where residents can walk, exercise and play, and one of our most iconic spots is Lake Caroline, in the heart of our community. The parks and reserves surrounding the lake have been classified high profile sites, which means daily servicing, weeding, leaf collection, and litter removal all the way to the water’s edge. We also clean the lake twice a month, removing rubbish, weeds and debris that may be in the water. Lake Caroline is the perfect location to take time out and connect with family, friends and neighbours, and with the new lights lining the path around the lake, it’s a safe and welcoming place, day or night.

Council continues to advocate on behalf of the community for improvements to roads in the City. In particular, we’re calling on the State Government to declare the Palmers Road Corridor (including Westwood Drive), a State road due to its strategic importance; and the State and Federal Governments to upgrade Western Highway to an urban freeway standard, between Melton and Caroline Springs. These roads are critical infrastructure links straining under the congestion of these high growth areas. Armed robber jailed 10 years By Laura Michell

Tumsa ABDI currently has four outstanding warrants of arrest after failing to answer bail pertaining to trafficking a drug of dependence, possessing drugs of dependence, contravene a final intervention order, contravening a community correction order and resisting arrest. ABDI is known to frequent the western suburbs and police are seeking information as to his current whereabouts. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

There are currently five warrants to arrest for Trevor DIX. On September 5, 2017, DIX failed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court to answer charges including reckless conduct endangering serious injury, criminal damage, robbery and theft. Three warrants were issued on this day. A further two warrants to arrest have since been issued for offences including driving whilst disqualified and failing to answer bail. Police are seeking information as to DIX’s current whereabouts. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A Derrimut man has been jailed for 10 years for a string of armed robberies in St Albans and Deer Park. Andres Uranga, 36, must spend at least eight years behind bars before being eligible for parole after being found guilty of five charges of armed robbery by a County Court jury. The armed robberies took place at service stations, pharmacies and a milk bar in St Albans and Deer Park between February and July 2017. In sentencing Uranga last month, County Court Judge Chris Ryan told the court Uranga had brandished an imitation firearm during each of the robberies. The court heard the first incident occurred at a service station on St Albans Road, St Albans on February 12, 2017. Uranga rode a bicycle to the store and demanded money. He left the store with about $400. The second incident took place at a pharmacy on Station Road, Deer Park on May 21, 2017. The court heard that Uranga held the imitation firearm to the pharmacist’s head and demanded money, before leaving the store with $300 from the pharmacist’s wallet and money from the cash register. The third incident took place at a service station on Neale Road, Deer Park on June 18, 2017, with Uranga leaving the store with $200. The fourth incident took place the following day at a pharmacy on Main Road

The court heard that two of Uranga’s victims had been “profoundly affected” by his actions and no longer felt safe. Judge Chris Ryan said Uranga had demonstrated no remorse for his conduct and maintained he was innocent. “Each of the armed robberies you committed were serious examples of crime of this kind,” he said. “You committed armed robberies on soft targets, you were aggressive and demanding in your demeanor and you were armed with an imitation firearm. “Your victims were not to know that the firearm was an imitation, and you used the firearm to threaten each of your victims.” Judge Ryan told the court that Uranga was using ice at the time of the offending. He said it was likely he would be deported to Uruguay upon his release from prison.

A festival to remember By Tate Papworth Rain did little to dampen Sunshine’s annual Lantern Festival, according to organisers. The Sunshine Business Association (SBA) said that despite inclement weather, about 50,000 people attended the September 15 festival. SBA president Carson Luk said that it was a festival to remember. “The event was a great success. By all the comments coming up on social media and emails we’ve received, the overall opinion is that it was fantastic.” Mr Luk said that the weather may have been a blessing in disguise. “We really thought the weather created an opportunity for the community to show its true spirit. Patrons still participated in all the rides and shows in the pouring rain, which you generally don’t see at other events.” Popular activities on the day included free circus activities, lantern making, origami, sand art, plaster play and elements from Melbourne’s White Night – a gigantic Cooroboree frog and red back spider wandering the street. “The kids absolutely loved the frog and the spider,” Mr Luk said. “It was fantastic to see so many kids running up to them and getting a selfie.” However the rain did wash out some elements, with the incredibly popular fireworks show cancelled. “[It] was disappointing, but I think everyone knew the reasons why,” Mr Luk said. “It wasn’t a complete washout though – we did have a digital fireworks display on a big screen as a contingency plan.” Mr Luk said that there were no major incidents and police were happy with crowd behaviour.

Sunshine Council will have wiped off its $1.95 million overdraft at the end of the current financial year. The council’s estimates for the 1979/80 financial year released yesterday (Tuesday) show the council will have an operating surplus of $490,000, the amount required to pay off the overdraft.

Sunshine Council’s tip in Hulett St, Albion, will close within four weeks. It will be replaced with a bigger and hopefully better tip at the former MMBW quarry in Jones Rd, Brooklyn. The council first realised time was rapidly running out at Hulett St in mid 1985.

MY BRIMBANK At just 18, Jamieson Battistella has a resume seasoned athletes would envy. The recently crowned Oceania champion spoke with Tate Papworth about the heptathlon, adversity and Brimbank. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I’ve grown up in the area. I went to the local primary school in Deer Park and I started Little Athletics out here when I was nine years old. What do you like best about it? I suppose the community. You get to know everyone in the area, and while I don’t still do Little Athletics out here, I still see people I met there out at the shops and things like that, which is nice. What could be done better? There’s always things that can be done better, but from my perspective, my community was great. Everyone helped each other out. Tell me about your time at Little Athletics. I started when I was nine. I liked racing my sister, so I went down to try it out. And now you’re a champion heptathlete? Yeah I recently competed in the Oceania championships in Townsville. I competed in two events – the heptathlon and the high jump. I ended up winning the heptathlon and came second in high jump.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing? No, the high jump is my strongest event in the heptathlon and it went poorly for me. It was a bit of a blow, but I was able to mentally recover and make up the points. At the time I was quite upset, but I took my breath and came back strongly. What’s next? I’m building into the new season. It’s my pre-season at the moment so I’m doing a heap of strength training,

THE LOGICAL CONSEQUENCE OF OUR DEVELOPMENT Ziehl-Abegg Abegg Australia, located in Derrimut, will be conducting a workshop specifically designed for children between 9 – 12 years of age on the 3rd October, 2019. The “Show with the Mouse” initiative has been created by Ziehl-Abegg Germany to provide children with a chance to take a closer look at manufacturing at the company. This year Ziehl-Abegg offers children on all six continents this unique opportunity that includes building an electric motor. “I’m proud that Ziehl-Abegg Australia is part of this great international event and that we can introduce children to engineering”, says Managing Director Alen Bouwer. “Our aim is to inspire children’s interest in the technical world,” explains Peter Fenkl, CEO of Ziehl-Abegg Germany. Villawood grants community wishes They say charity starts at home and that’s exactly the case for Villawood Properties’ Aspire community in Fraser Rise which is seeking to give $5000 in sponsorship grants to community groups in the local area. Through Villawood’s Community Grants program, the Aspire community has supported a diverse mix of community groups, including schools, sporting clubs, dance studios and environmental advocacy groups. Last year, Villawood invested $1.7 million back into the community. Villawood Properties executive director Rory Costelloe explains that connecting with smaller groups – that would otherwise escape the attention of corporate sponsors – was an important way to foster community engagement, particularly in growth corridors. “For 30 years, Villawood Properties has been creating dynamic, vibrant and sustainable communities. To achieve this, it has been important to understand the local causes that matter most to our residents,” Mr Costelloe says. “It’s also important to us to support the smaller groups that may not necessarily have the resources to seek out corporate sponsors – we want to help as many of these groups as possible.” One group that benefited hugely from a Villawood community grant last year is the Avondale Football Club. Despina Donato, the club’s general manager, says the support enabled the purchase of a video camera that’s changed things up for coaches and players. “We began using the camera at the start of the season, using footage for game-day analysis,” Ms Donato says. “Coaches use it in their analysis and discussion sessions with players, and footage is uploaded onto our online portal. This is excellent for the players’ development and for parents to understand their growth and see the changes in their playing style and skills/ abilities. “It’s been a real asset to the club and our community as well. We’re grateful that Villawood responded so positively when our team proactively approached them to see what they could do. The outcome is a resounding success.” Members of the public are also able to nominate groups. SPORT Seventh heaven for Lions By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park stands alone as the only metropolitan football club in Victoria to win seven straight top-flight premierships. The Lions claimed the incredible record with a jaw-dropping come-from-behind three-point win over highly-fancied Altona in a Western Region Football League division 1 grand final classic at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Lions coach Marc Bullen lauded the character of his players after they appeared to be down and out staring a 25-point deficit in the face at half-time. “The records are the records and the accolades are the accolades, but you’ve got to praise the players for what they did today,” Bullen said. “They were down and out, but they were absolutely enormous late in the game. “We got challenged, we got thrown spanners, but at the end of the day we made the right decisions at the right times, went for the jugular and we’ve won a premiership.” Deer Park was more like pussy cats than lions in the first half. The Lions had the game being dictated to them and were getting beaten in the physicality stakes. What they needed was something different and Bullen put in his order at half-time. “We decided to put a special working party together at half-time when we were down by four goals,” he said. “We wanted to change the direction of the game and bring back 1980s footy.” It was not exactly old school ‘bring back the biff’, but it was definitely a brutal ’80s style of physicality shown by Deer Park. Daniel Cooper produced an old fashioned clothes liner early in the third quarter to be the first yellow carded, Chris Stewart had a brain snap and followed him to the bench shortly after and Jack Redpath got his marching orders in the last quarter. Deer Park played two down in the third quarter and one down in the fourth. The Lions got a lift from captain Jack Purton-Smith in the midfield, while roaming tall Scott Greenhough stamped his authority on the game and small forward Spiros Amarantidis sparked to life. Stewart returned to have a major influence, while Kwame McHarg was an ever present. The tone-setter for Deer Park though was Jackson Barling, who made his mark straight out of the half-time break. Barling ran through the centre square looking to collect any Altona player in his way. It changed the tone of the game and gave Deer Park a physical edge. From that moment on, Altona appeared to second guess itself in the contest. Deer Park took over the clearance battle and

A six-minute patch at the start of the fourth quarter saw the Vikings lead all but disappear. Amarantidis got Deer Park going with a goal just 45 seconds into the fourth quarter. Jeremy Mills, who claimed the best-on-ground medal, marked on the lead and converted four minutes later. Then Amarantidis marked and goaled to get the Lions to within one point. Deer Park enjoyed a sustained period of attack for the first 20 minutes of the fourth, but its goals dried up after the Amarantidis major. The Lions kicked four consecutive behinds and you wondered if those misses could prove costly. Altona somehow got up off the canvas to fight until the bitter end. The final 10 minutes saw the ball camped in Altona’s half of the ground, but they could not find an avenue to a match-winning goal. For Altona, this is a result that will churn in the stomach forever more. The Vikings went in as favourites, finished as minor premiers and had beaten Deer Park on all three occasions this season. It was Deer Park’s 11th senior premiership, moving it to fourth on the WRFL division 1 premiers list behind Spotswood (15), Parkside (14) and Braybrook (12).

Byrnes farewells football with yet another premiership Deer Park small forward Shannon Byrnes has called time on his distinguished football career. The two-time AFL premiership player with Geelong signed off after a fourth consecutive flag with Deer Park in the Western Region Football League division 1 on Saturday. Amid the exultation of a thrilling three-point grand final win over Altona at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, Byrnes was emotional as he was flanked by his family for the last time after playing a game of football. “I had every emotion going through my body that you could imagine,” Byrnes said of his reaction at the final siren. “It was shock, disbelief and happiness that we won and then a tinge of sadness that it’s the end of an unbelievable time in my life. “It’s been a huge day and I’m just so glad we got to come out on top.” To say Byrnes went out on a high would be an understatement.

The 35-year-old has experienced the thrill of winning two AFL premierships on the MCG, but the victory over Altona might have topped it all. “I was just saying to dad, I don’t think I’ve

ever felt more satisfaction from a win than I did today, at any level,” Byrnes said. “They’d beaten us three times throughout the year, we were the underdogs, we had three players sent off during the game, 100 metres in penalties given against us, kicking against the wind in the last quarter and to still be able to come through with a win, it’s an unbelievable list of things you can go through. “We shouldn’t have won it, but we did. “It doesn’t get any better.” One of the hardest things for an AFL player is the transition from the big league to local football. Byrnes was grateful for the chance to play alongside his mates Marc Bullen and Jason Kennedy, and do it in a successful team. “It’s a perfect way to finish off my career to play in four flags in a row,” Byrnes said. “They’ve been an unbelievable club and they’ve set a metro record [of consecutive premierships] and I’m so glad to have been a

small part of that.” All former AFL players who move back into local football seem to cop their fair share of abuse from people on the other side of the fence and Byrnes was no different. He wanted to thank the Lions fans for the support he received in those times. “The Lions Den supporters have been unbelievable for me,” Byrnes said. “I cop a fair bit over the fence from the opposition supporters and they couldn’t be better in backing me up.” With his partner Megan pregnant with their second child, Byrnes, who celebrated with his two-year-old son after the game, will hang up the boots to spend more time with family. Byrnes is not totally lost to football though, as he will continue his role as player development manager at the Melbourne Football Club. Lance Jenkinson

Keilor skipper relishes his time to shine on big stage Keilor skipper Kane Barbuto had to check that Saturday afternoon wasn’t a dream, as he led his side to an Essendon District Football League premier division premiership. Barbuto starred for the Blues as they held off Aberfeldie to complete the perfect season, with their 20th straight win. He said it was pretty special. “I can’t really describe it,” he said in the rooms after the game. “I don’t know if it’s really sunk in. I said to Mick [McGuane] straight after the game, is it a dream? “It’s such an emotional year with the adversity that we’ve had to go through, it’s just a great feeling. “It doesn’t get much better than that.” Barbuto said for him, the focus was getting a good start and going from there. He kicked the Blues first goal and would finish with three goals for the game. “I had to get stuck in early. As midfielders we

have to get the territory game going. “To get on the end of a couple of goals early, you know it’s your day come up. “I got a little bit more attention in the second half, but that’s what you play all the other 19 games of the season for. It’s what it is about, getting used to that sort of attention. “To be able to finish off with a few goals, premiership medal around my neck and a Reg Rose [best on ground medal], I’m excited.” It didn’t come as a surprise to many that Barbuto was named best on ground – five of the eight EDFL tipsters had Barbuto as their pick to take out the medal before the game. The man himself had no idea as he tried to hold his nerves intact. “I tried to keep as much of a social media ban before the game as possible. I do get a bit nervous and I hang for the ball to be balled up, then it’s my time to shine. “I probably got a couple of messages from family, that think I’m a bit selfish.”

The premiership win didn’t come without a couple of hiccups. Barbuto hurt his shoulder in the second quarter, before suffering cramp in the dying minutes. “I copped a stinger right on the AC joint and got it strapped just before half-time and worked through it. I don’t know if I was as strong on the right side as I usually am.” The premiership is Barbuto’s second with the Blues, having been part of the 2016 premiership. He said both were special. “The last one was amazing, it was my first premiership and I got to play with my brother,” he said. “To be able to captain a side and lead a team, that’s really special to me. “At the moment I can’t separate them. In the future, if I reflect, I might be able to but at the moment I can’t split them.” Tara Murray

True Blue champions By Tara Murray Keilor put the finishing touches on the perfect season, claiming the Essendon District Football League premier division on Saturday afternoon. Clearly the best side all season, the Blues faced an Aberfeldie side that was hoping to make its own history – the Gorillas were aiming for three premierships in a row. With plenty on the line the decider went down to the dying minutes. The Blues were able to hold off the Gorillas, 11.9 (75)-10.7 (67). Blues coach Mick McGuane was clearly proud of the group. “To win 20 games straight is difficult to do,” he said. “To be premiers and champions [minor premiers] in the same season, our club has never done before at senior level, 142 years of history is broken. “It takes a special group to do that and a special club to put itself in a position to even achieve that.” While the Blues entered the match as favourites, McGuane knew it wouldn’t be an easy game.

History between the two clubs is rich, with Saturday the third time in four years that Keilor and Aberfeldie have faced off in the decider. The Blues took advantage of the scoring end in the first quarter and led by 16 points at quarter-time. They held on to a 12 point lead at half-time. McGuane was a happy coach after the first three quarters. “Our boys got off to good start and we got the ascendancy at half-time and got a buffer, which we needed to at three-quarter time. “I said to the boys that we needed to be five goals in front and we got five in front”. McGuane said the five goal buffer gave them a few more options in the final quarter. The Gorillas scored the opening two goals to make it game-on. With 20 minutes gone in the final quarter, the margin was back to eight points and the Blues couldn’t take their foot off the pedal. “We spoke about the 30 minutes and we needed to have some bravery,” McGuane said. “We had to play and we did that and created some momentum and hit the scoreboard. “They got it back to eight points with four

minutes to go and the ball lived in our front half mostly after that. “Stoppage after stoppage, the boys were pretty intelligent to keep the ball in close. “We showed some maturity with a young group, how to win a game and how to save a game, both presented to us in the last quarter.” McGuane said there were plenty of clutch moments that they would look back at as important moments in the game. Jamie Papalia, Josh Sadler and Matthew Clark’s last quarter goals among them. There was also some good defence efforts which proved vital. “The Sadler tackle, the Dean Galea tackle and run down on Caleb Hislop. “[Josh] Toy looks like he has got forward and [Brad] Xavier reads the cues and cuts it off. “Just shows me players off the ball are still involved and impacting it defensively,” McGuane said. Skipper Kane Barbuto was named best on ground, dominating in the midfield and kicking three goals. Co-coach Dean Galea kicked four goals, having been held goaless in the semi-final.

Other standouts for the Blues, according to McGuane, included Riley Ham, David Gourdis, Billy Iles, Mitchell Rogerson and Jamie Papalia. McGuane said they had a number of good performers, with several playing through duress. The win is even more remarkable for the Blues who were missing nearly a third of their best side. With many big names missing big chunks of the season, it has given players opportunities to step up. “Joseph Ciranna, Stefan Radovanovic, Riley Ham, Campbell Barton, Sadler … A lot are young players in game experience and on the birth certificate. “They are young with the world at their feet to have successful careers. “It bodes well with the youth and experience to blend together.” It’s McGuane’s third premiership as coach of Keilor. Seven players are now dual premiership players having also played in 2016. Thirteen of the team were part of last year’s grand final side. McGuane was quick to praise the Gorillas and the work they’ve done in recent years. The grand final was the Gorillas seventh in a row, having won three premierships.

By Lance Jenkinson Richmond is heading into the 2019 AFL grand final in irresistible form. The Tigers have bared their claws in the second half of the season to enter the last Saturday in September on a scorching hot 11-game winning streak. Not only have the Tigers won every game since their mid-season bye, they have been winning by hefty margins. Damien Hardwick’s yellow and black army are unbeaten since round 15 with an average winning margin of 34 points per game. During the 11-week block of matches, the Tigers have picked off wins over the rest of the top four sides, so their form line is strong. The Tigers have also beaten their grand final opponent comprehensively in that span of games. Richmond’s greatest strength is its ability to swarm a contested ball situation. The Tigers out-number at the contest and find a way to nudge the ball forward through slick hands or toe pokes forward. Captain Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Dion Prestia are the chief ball winners at the coal face, but the willingness of the TIgers flankers and wingmen to get involved overwhelms their opponents and that was evident in the second half of their come-from-behind win over Geelong Cats in the preliminary final at the MCG on Friday night.

Richmond is not a one-trick team though. How lucky are the Tigers to have two elite power forwards in Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt to kick to inside 50? Lynch was magnificent with five goals in the win over Geelong. Just as important to Richmond’s ability to put up a big score is its crumbing forwards and flankers, who are best in class. Shai Bolton, Jason Castagna, Daniel Rioli, Kane Lambert and Josh Caddy are the not-so-secret herbs and spices that give the Tigers forward line unpredictability. If there was one question mark over Richmond this season, it was how they would cope with the loss of defensive leader Alex Rance, who succumbed to a knee injury. It took a bit of time for the Tigers to adapt without Rance, but once they did, it has not proven to be too much of a burden. Dylan Grimes and David Astbury have been defensive pillars, while Nathan Broad and Nick Vlaustin have elevated their games. Bachar Houli is still super important for his rebound out of 50. Hunting its 12th AFL flag and second premiership in three years, Richmond will be heavily favoured to get the job done this Saturday.

A STAR WEEKLY FEATURE

Giants hold strong Greater Western Sydney’s remarkable finals run has continued, with the competition’s newest side through to its first AFL grand final. Having been the underdog throughout their three finals matches, the Giants have held strong when they needed to. While they will be on the road this weekend for a third straight week and Richmond will be clear favourites, you would be silly to write the Giants off. You only need to look back a few years and see what the Western Bulldogs did in 2016, to know it is possible. For the Giants, just three players – Heath Shaw, Matt De Boer and Shane Mumford – have played in a grand final. Saturday’s win against Collingwood at a packed MCG would have been the biggest crowd most of the group has played in front of. It’s good preparation for the Giants, with Richmond’s fans just as loud, if not louder than the Magpies. The Giants have shown plenty of nerve throughout the finals.

Zac Williams, who has dominated this season at half-back, showed he can be just as damaging in the middle. Josh Kelly has done Josh Kelly things, while Jeremy Cameron continues to kick goals. Matt De Boer is arguably the player of the finals, for his tagging role. Surely he gets Dustin Martin this week. Then there’s the likes of Lachie Keeffe, who was a surprise inclusion for the preliminary final and was one of the Giants best. The biggest question this week for the Giants will surround selection. Toby Greene is a definite in, returning from suspension. Can Lachie Whitfield play 10 or so days after having his appendix out? Does Stephen Coniglio, who hasn’t played since round 17, make a return for a knee injury? And how does captain Phil Davis pull up, having been in the wars in the preliminary final. Come Saturday, the Giants have the chance to write themselves in the history books.

New Mazda3 better than ever By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring

out that, unlike most cars where the car needs to be in park, the Mazda must also have the engine turned off and pairing done through the accessory setting. Not a major issue given that it’s a once-off process for new owners.

Mazda3 has been a consistently high seller throughout its 15 years on the Australian market, often contesting the top spots in both its small-medium category as well as overall sales. The latest, fourth generation, model arrived here in February in five-door hatchback form with the four-door sedan joining it a few months later. The previous Neo and Maxx names have been dropped and replaced with new titles based on the two engine sizes: 2.0-litre G20 Pure, G20 Evolve, G20 Touring and 2.5-litre G25 Evolve, G25 GT and G25 Astina.

Safety

New for 2019 is a driver’s knee air bag bringing the total to seven. Advanced safety features have been added including Smart Brake Support (SBS), Lane-Keep Assist (LAS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) and Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW). There are also two ISOFIX child seat anchors in the outer rear seats. New to the GenFour Mazda3 is Vision Technology which adds Driver Monitoring, Front Cross Traffic Alert, Cruising and Traffic Support and a 360-degree view camera. It comes standard in the top-spec G25 Astina and as a $1500 option in all other variants.

Styling

As tall, boxy SUVs have grown in popularity it seems that designers of conventional sedans and hatches are reacting by adopting a lower and sleeker, fastback styling. So it is with the Gen Four Mazda3. We found the rear of the hatch a little heavy with its bulky C-pillar and much prefer the smoother lines of the sedan.

Driving

Interior

Rear seat passengers in the sedan get more legroom than the shorter hatch as well as a two air vents and drop-down armrest with twin cup holders. Cargo space in the sedan’s boot is now 444 litres, up from the previous 408 litres in the superseded model. The 60/40 rear seatbacks can be lowered by using pull-tabs located on either side at the top of the boot. They don’t quite fold flat. All models have push-button engine start, electric parking brake with auto hold, i-stop automatic spot/start and childproof rear door locks.

Engines / transmissions

The engines are revised versions of the Mazda SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder units. The G20 generates 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque. The G25 has outputs of 139 kW at 6000 rpm and 252 Nm at 4000 and also comes with cylinder deactivation which allows it to run on two cylinders in light driving conditions. All models are offered with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions.

Infotainment

The Mazda Connect system gets an excellent centrally mounted 8.8-inch widescreen colour screen which is controlled by a rotary dial located between the front seats rather than the more common touchscreen. Embedded satellite navigation is standard in all models as, for the first time in the ‘3, are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are two fast-charging USB ports. Bluetooth pairing proved a bit frustrating until we found
