Cops in murder appeal By Tate Papworth Police are closing in on the killer of 77-year-old Sydenham woman Vicki Ramadan. Police last week said a suspect has been identified for the brutal murder of Ms Ramadan but are appealing for more information. Ms Ramadan was discovered by a neighbour inside her Marlborough Way home on Saturday, April 6, about 9.45am. Investigators have confirmed she died after a brutal attack some time between March 23 and April 6. Squatters at a premise near Ms Ramadan’s home were an active line of investigation but police say this is no longer the case. Detective Inspector Tim Day said detectives have re-visited the crime scene a number of times over the past five months and say a dispute Vicki reported to police on March 23 remains an active line of inquiry.

Emily taking her liberties Brimbank’s own Miss Liberty Foxx is hoping to dazzle audiences at this year’s Australian Burlesque Festival. Keilor Downs resident Emily Garretto – who is also known as Miss Liberty Foxx – is one of 22 performers taking to the stage at Federation Square on September 26 for the festival’s new follies show. Garretto, who has been performing for four years, said she enjoyed the freedom of being a burlesque performer. “I danced for a very long time ... with dancing we all had to be the same and nothing could be different. But with burlesque I can express whatever I want and do whatever I want,” she said. “Most people think of burlesque as the traditional, classic style – which I do – but predominantly I do style-neo which is comedic. “There are so many style of burlesque that people don’t realise.” Garretto said her performance for the Australian Burlesque Festival – which pays tribute to King Kong – is one of her favourite routines. “This is my most booked act and my favourite, complete with a full gorilla suit. Club pays tribute to a character By Tate Papworth Football clubs are built around characters. The Braybrook Football Club has been blessed with some great characters in its 145 years – including legends such as Ted Whitten and Doug Hawkins. One name not as widely known is Shawn Marion. Shawn never played the game at the highest level, but he gave everything he had for more than two decades at the club he loved. Sadly, Shawn’s life was cut short late on the evening of August 10. Shawn was struck by a car as he crossed Ballarat Road, making his way home from a

day at the club. Braybrook Sporting Club president Bryan Patten said it was a loss that’s shaken the club. “Shawn was one of those guys that whether you knew him 10 years or five minutes, it felt like you’d known him forever. “He will be missed by all. There’s a big gap left without him, but he’ll be remembered forever.” Mr Patten said Shawn was the ultimate clubman. “He’d been down here for at least 20 years, he was one of those blokes that was always down here. “He played footy, but he loved to come down for a beer and even volunteer – he was always

happy to umpire, fill in at the last minute or man the canteen. I coached him last year. It’s true he was always keen to volunteer, but he wasn’t big on training. “He loved an excuse for why he couldn’t train, then he’d ring you on Friday night and ask if he was in.” In a mark of respect, the club has now renamed the canteen after Shawn. However, he was more than a clubman. Shawn’s sister Virginia said he was the best brother, uncle and son a family could ask for. “He looked after everyone. He had such a special relationship with mum,” she said. “He was just the best guy. He’d give you his last five dollars, that’s the type of guy he was.”

Mr Seymour said the Mount Zero Olive grove was focused on sustainability and was biodynamic certified. “We are trying to take the sustainable principles through to everything we do,” he said. “Most businesses are trying to reduce waste because they know it is the right thing to do and it makes good business sense.” Mr Seymour said Mount Zero Olives also held open days at its warehouse every three

months during which people are encouraged to fill their own containers. He said analysis carried out after a recent open day found the bring your own container program resulted in 300 litres of olive oil poured into reusable containers instead of 1000 glass bottles, and 100 kilograms of olives and 200 kilograms of grains packed into containers instead of plastic packaging. A Sunshine West olive company is on a mission to reduce its use of plastic by allowing customers to bring their own containers to its warehouse. Each Friday, Mount Zero Olives opens the doors to its warehouse and encourages people to bring their own containers to buy olives, salt, olive oil, dukkah, grains and legumes. General manager Richard Seymour said the BYO container days started about six months ago in response to growing demand from

The NBN roll-out is continuing across Brimbank. Work is under way to connect parts of Sunshine North, Keilor and Derrimut to the network. An NBN spokesperson said work is expected to be completed by early 2020. “Currently more than 106,000 homes and businesses across Brimbank are able to connect to the NBN network,” she said. “Construction is currently under way to connect parts of Sunshine North, Keilor and Derrimut. “It’s expected these premises will be able to connect to the NBN network early next year.” The spokesperson said additional work may be required for some homes. “It’s important to remember that each premises is unique, with a small number of premises that will require additional works from an engineering perspective before they will be ready to connect to the new network,” she said. “It is not unusual for the majority of an area to become NBN ready, while works are being carried out to those remaining premises. This means access is not held back for those areas where construction is complete.” Residents and businesses in St Albans, Sunshine and Sunshine West were progressively added to the NBN between 2016 and August of this year. Albion went live in September 2018.

Grand sign for these kids Standing in the middle of the MCG on AFL grand final day is a dream many Australians aspire, and for a group of St Albans students it’s about to become a reality. Pupils from St Albans East Primary School’s deaf choir have been invited to sign the national anthem on the big stage. Principal Paul Busuttil said excitement is fever pitch. “We decided to take a shot and contact the

AFL asking if this could be a possibility and it was welcomed,” Mr Busuttil said. “We told the kids on the day we found out and naturally they’re really excited. They’ve been rehearsing during lunch.” He said the opportunity extended deeper than the performance. “They sign the national anthem every fortnight at our assembly, but this opportunity is providing them with a stage or platform to promote awareness of deaf culture and the school itself.

“We’re a mainstream school with a deaf facility on site, so for us this is inclusivity at its best. The kids aren’t withdrawn from class regularly and they’re just seen as any other 9-3.30 student.” Even though the grand final is held during the school holidays, Mr Busuttil said the countdown had already begun. “We’ve had to explain the game and just what this stage means to a few of the kids, but everything seems to be going well in the lead-up. “We’re just waiting for the main event now.”

Brimbank residents are being urged to check their heart health this month. A free testing station which checks whether a patient has an irregular heartbeat – increasing the risk of stroke five-fold – has been set up at Sunshine Hospital. It’s part of a campaign developed by Hearts4Heart in response to alarmingly low levels of testing for a heart condition known as atrial fibrillation. Hearts4Heart chief executive Tanya Hall said early detection of an irregular heartbeat can prove to be life saving. “Atrial fibrillation-related strokes can be prevented, but diagnosis remains the critical first step,” she said. “It is estimated that one-in-four strokes occur in people with atrial fibrillation. “We don’t want a stroke to be the first time any Australian discovers they have an irregular heartbeat. “Pulse and heart-rate testing is quick, it’s simple and could ultimately save lives.” The testing station will operate from 2-4pm on Wednesday, September 18 and from 9-11am on Friday, September 20. Atrial fibrillation screening and information stations will operate at hospitals and pharmacies across Australia during Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Week, November 18-24. Centre complete

Works to upgrade Sunshine Leisure Centre are complete. A new cafe has been built at reception, while new flooring has been installed in the foyer, alongside more seating and a merchandise area. Essential maintenance work has been completed on the indoor leisure pool and spa and the changerooms have been renovated. Sale trail hits Brimbank The nation’s biggest garage sale is once again heading to Brimbank. The Garage Sale Trail is a two-day sustainability initiative at schools, businesses, community groups and homes. This year the event will be held across the weekend of October 19 and 20. Summersault festival falls flat By Ewen McRae The annual Summersault festival is no more. Melton council this month pulled the plug on the family event because of dwindling attendances. Held at Caroline Springs Recreation Reserve each February since 2013, the festival has been billed as a celebration of summer. But Melton mayor Bob Turner last week said it was time for something new to reinvigorate the area.

“We’ve had some great times at Summersault, and now it’s time for a change,” he said. “Summersault has been a key feature of council’s events calendar but, after careful consideration, council has decided it’s no longer meeting community expectations. “Tens of thousands of residents have enjoyed Summersault over the years but lower attendance by families, and community feedback in more recent years, prompted council to reassess the event.” The festival’s budget in recent years was

about $200,000. The 2019 festival featured live bands Kingswood and Saskwatch, as well as food stalls, rides and family entertainment. The festival made national headlines in 2017 when a gang of about 40 youths tore through the event, assaulting festival-goers and stealing a number of phones and wallets. The council admitted this played a part in its decision to end the event. “Community safety is paramount at our events and we work closely with Victoria Police to ensure our events are safe and secure,” Cr

Turner said. “We took into account the reduced attendance by local families and anti-social behaviour at the event. “We continually review our events to ensure they are meeting the needs of our community and fulfilling their objectives. “Attendees told us they wanted different entertainment and food options, improved market stalls, changes to the ride offerings and even an earlier start time.” The council said it is planning a new event to fill the space on the calendar for 2020.

Appeal for volunteers The Caroline Springs RSL is in need of volunteers for this year’s Poppy Appeal. Caroline Springs RSL sub-branch president Andy Marshall said some new faces would go a long way to helping the branch achieve its goals. “We need our community’s support to reach our goal. We would love to see more volunteers out there selling badges and be a part of helping to raise much-needed funds for veterans,” he said. “We would welcome the support of anyone who has an hour or two of their time to donate to the appeal. This could involve helping us pack poppies into trays, dropping our Poppy Appeal boxes off at local businesses or helping us sell poppies for an hour or two at the local shops.” Membership officer Peter Burquest said extra hands will ease the load on current volunteers. “We’re thinking even if we only got another half a dozen to a dozen people to give us a hand,

it would really help make a difference,” Mr Burquest said. “We’ve got enough to do the drive, but we risk burning people out if we don’t have a few more numbers.” He said finding volunteers to help out had been a challenge in previous years. “It’s been a problem to cover the areas we’d like to, so we’re pretty limited in what we can do. “So this year we’re looking for a few people to give us an extra hand to reach our goal. Errington is on target By Tate Papworth Work on a $4.3 million sports and community pavilion at St Albans’ Errington Reserve has begun. The old pavilion and the adjoining unused meals on wheels facility has been demolished to make way for the new pavilion. “Over the coming months the community can look forward to seeing the pavilion take shape.” LED lighting will be added near the new pavilion and construction of new synthetic tennis courts valued at $2.4 million is moving along quickly. “The three courts being constructed next to the pavilion already have concrete courts poured, light poles are about to be installed, and synthetic grass will follow in the coming weeks,” Cr Congreve said. “The multi-use hard court near Percy Street is also moving along. Recognition for council works Recent upgrades to Princess Street, St Albans have put Brimbank council in line for a coveted award. The council has been shortlisted for an Australian Urban Design Award in the built projects – local and neighbourhood scale, category. The transformation of Princess Street includes the first shared user zone in Brimbank, creating a pedestrian-focused link between the St Albans train station, the nearby Errington precinct and the Bowery Theatre. It also includes improved safety, more trees, feature lighting, garden beds and seating. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said the nomination was a major achievement. “The transformation of Princess Street into a bold new public space has created a fun, lively atmosphere where people feel safe and comfortable getting around or meeting up with friends,” she said. “Council’s vision is for Brimbank to be vibrant, harmonious and welcoming – and a great place to live, work and grow. “Creating high quality, attractive public spaces is one of the key ways we’re working to achieve this vision.” The $1.75 million upgrade was funded by the Brimbank council ($925,000) in partnership with the Victorian government’s Community Crime Prevention Program ($250,000). Mayor’s childcare costs questioned ‘‘

Brimbank ratepayers forked out more than $20,000 to cover the mayor’s annual childcare fees during the 2018-19 financial year. Cr Lucinda Congreve claimed $24,288.29 in childcare costs, raising alarm in some sections of the community. Keilor Residents and Ratepayers spokesperson Susan Jennison said the total seemed to be high. “That’s an alarming number,” Ms Jennison said.

“That’s a lot of rates to cover that amount.” The mayor and councillors are paid an annual allowance and expenses. As at end 2018-19, the mayoral allowance is $98,465 per annum and the councillor allowance is $30,827 per annum. Brimbank council’s director advocacy

partnerships and community Dan Hogan said the expenses fell within the ‘reasonable’ limit. “The councillor code of conduct permits councillors to be reimbursed for reasonable out of pocket carer expenses incurred when undertaking official council duties … and where the councillor is the primary care giver,” he said. “Support and expense reimbursements allow all councillors, regardless of background, family and personal situations, the support and flexibility to conduct their duties of office.” A receipt clearly identifying the provider,

type of service, date and time of service, hourly rate and hours of service must also be provided when claiming childcare. The councillor code of conduct also states that maximum fees will be determined as rates not exceeding reasonable market rates available within the municipality. The average cost of childcare in Australia as of June 2017 was $8.90 an hour. Childcare is one of a number of expenses councillors can claim. Travel, conferences, training, mobile and data are also claimable.

Ruby shines at hockey experience of playing against the best has inspired Ruby to get to the top. She is currently training in the Hockey Victoria under-13 Indoor Accelerated Program, and plays in the top grade of club hockey for her age group. “It was a great experience to be a part of, and I’d love to do it again,” she said. “My big goal is to play for the Hockeyroos in the Olympics, so at this stage I’m on track I guess.”

Ruby might only be early in her hockey career, but she’s already aiming for the top. The 10-year-old has just returned from her first School Sports Australia national championships, picking up a bronze medal as part of the under-12 Victorian team. The Caroline Springs forward held her own against some much older players. “The trials to get into the team were very hard, playing against the best players in the state, but I just tried hard and I got in,” she said. “It was my first time playing for Victoria, and the nationals were the hardest but most rewarding games I’ve played. “Playing against the other states and in front of some big crowds was a lot of fun. “I came so close to scoring a goal, but just missed out, but getting my medal was really cool.” While she missed out on hitting the scoreboard for the tournament, the learning

Motorists caught in police blitz By Laura Michell Almost 30 people a day were caught speeding on Brimbank roads during a recent four-day police operation aimed at reducing road trauma. Operation Argus ran from 12.01am on Thursday, September 5 to 11.59pm on Sunday, September 8 in response to the high number of people killed on Victorian roads this year. Road policing command acting Assistant Commissioner Tim Hansen said Operation Argus targeted the main causes of road

trauma including driver impairment, fatigue, speeding, distraction and seat belt offences. In Brimbank, 282 traffic offences were detected over the four days, including 118 drivers who were caught speeding. Among them was a 30-year-old Maddingley woman who was caught driving at 129km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Western Freeway at Derrimut on September 8. Police said the woman also had a suspended licence. Her car was impounded and she will be charged on summons. Fifty drivers were detected using their

mobile phone while driving, while 33 were found to be driving unregistered vehicles, 18 were unlicensed and three people were found to be drink-driving. Police also stopped 28 motorists for seat belt offences and 13 cars were impounded. Nineteen cyclists were stopped by police for a

range of offences. Acting Assistant Commissioner Hansen said it was disappointing to see so many motorists continuing to engage in risky behaviour. “Victoria Police invest significant resources into road policing but we also need the community to work with us,” he said. “There is absolutely no excuse when it comes to drink and drug driving, speeding or using your mobile phone while driving. “Road trauma is avoidable. It’s only a matter of time before … the law catches up with you or you experience the devastating consequences.”

Food for good thoughts Healthy lunches will be provided to students in need at St Albans North Primary School under an expansion of the school’s breakfast club program. St Albans North Primary School is one of the first schools to sign up to the new state government lunch program. The school began offering lunches late last month, and is also able to provide holiday supplies to students who need them. It has been running a breakfast club since 2011. The breakfast and lunch menu includes a range of healthy options such as muesli, Vita Brits, milk, baked beans, fruit cups, apples and lunch bowls. St Albans North Primary School principal Robert Parker said the breakfast and lunch programs were “vital” to the school. “Apart from the fact we are feeding children who might not have food at all, it is also getting

them to school and they are arriving earlier,” he said. “We couldn’t do without [the programs]. They are vital to our whole school program.” Education Minister James Merlino said the lunch program would mean students from families that are experiencing disadvantage have the support they need to succeed at school. “Having lunches will make it easier for children who may not be able to bring food to school,” he said. “We know that children can’t learn properly on an empty stomach – that’s why we’re expanding this program to offer lunches to those who need them most.” Laura Michell Pupils Bella and Mohammad sample their lunches. Police bust trafficking syndicate By Laura Michell Two Caroline Springs residents are among five people arrested as part of an investigation into a drug trafficking syndicate linked to the Comanchero outlaw motorcycle gang. Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police and Australian Border Force executed search warrants at properties in Caroline Springs, Aberfeldie, Greenvale, Hillside and Kew on September 12. A 21-year-old Greenvale man, 20-year-old Aberfeldie man and a 30-year-old Kew man

were arrested. A 27-year-old Caroline Springs man, who is alleged to be an office bearer of the Comancheros, and a 25-year-old Caroline Springs woman were arrested on September 11. A number of items including cash, drugs and stolen vehicles were seized during the raids. Police said the arrests are part of a 10-month investigation into the importation of border controlled substances and large commercial level trafficking within Victoria. Police believe the syndicate is also linked to two non-fatal shootings and a vehicle arson in

Reservoir in early June. A Broadmeadows man, 21, was arrested on September 4 in relation to the vehicle arson. Police said a firearm was uncovered during the arrest and is being forensically tested. The man has been charged with being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and possessing a drug of dependence. Echo Taskforce Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Lloyd said the arrests showed police were actively working to disrupt criminal activities. “The links to the shootings and arson also highlight how often we see drugs and firearms

intrinsically linked within these organised crime groups,” he said. “Ultimately, this is a syndicate who have caused immense harm within Victoria.” Police and Australian Border Force have previously made a number of seizures as part of the investigation, including 1.975 tonnes of 1,4 Butanediol; 100 kilograms of P2P, a pre-cursor chemical used in the manufacture of methyl-amphetamine and amphetamine; and more than 100kg of ketamine and analogue narcotics, which mirror the effects of amphetamine-based substances.

Wonders of word week Dinjerra Primary School turned into a literary wonderland last week. Pupils at the school celebrated book week with a dress-up day and assembly. Assistant principal Catherine Robertson said it was a day of colour, great costumes and excitement. “Everyone was really excited on the day, there were some great costumes and we announced the winners of a whole school competition.” Online tech giant Amazon donated the school $500 to purchase books, which Ms Robertson said generated a lot of enthusiasm. “The kids recently went through their classroom libraries and took out the books that weren’t really engaging them. “They’ve already written a list of books they want to use the voucher on, what they decide to purchase is totally up to them.” Each class had to create a display themed around a book shortlisted for book of the year.

The winning class was 4/6C which based its display around The Feather by Margaret Wild. “Each class spent about two weeks in the lead-up to the day creating their display,” Ms Robertson said. “They’d pick a book, read it in class, use it in their learning and create the display. “While there was only one $500 voucher, the school chipped in $50 vouchers to every other class so everyone won something.” Tate Papworth

MY BRIMBANK Chantal Wynter will be taking audiences on a guided tour of Sunshine’s industrial past as part her Fringe Westside Show Sweet Sunshine. She speaks with Laura Michell. What’s your connection to Brimbank?

“historical”, the topics are still contemporary for women of all ages and backgrounds. I hope that this show provides audiences a unique lens to interpret the rich industrial history and cultural diversity of Sunshine.

I was introduced to Sunshine through a friend who grew up, lived and worked in Sunshine. Her family owned a furniture manufacturing business which eventually closed. I am attracted to Sunshine as it’s a lot like Footscray, where I live. There are great places to eat and shop. It’s relaxed and has an eclectic community. There are similarities between Sunshine and Footscray with First Nation Peoples unceded land, colonisation, prolific industry, working and unionised classes, and waves of migration that all influence the western suburbs.

Is this your first Fringe Westside show? It is my first Sunshine Fringe Westside show. I’ve produced other shows Fringe Westside in Footscray. I’m pretty excited to do my first show in Sunshine and hope to do more. How long have you been producing?

What, if anything would you like to change?

I’ve been producing events and shows for over seven years. My role as a producer is to conceive the concept, engage the artists and deliver the event to a public audience. I often work in site-specific locations and draw on local history to produce the show. My interest is engaging with locals and providing a platform for artists to respond to a place.

I think there are a lot of developers that see Sunshine as a future hub which is a great thing. Coming from Footscray where development has been accelerated, I would be asking developers to contribute to Sunshine infrastructure such as social housing, public amenities and social services. I would like to see developers in Sunshine contribute to existing and future communities on an ongoing basis. Other than that, I wouldn’t change a thing (except for parking).

Where is your favourite local place to spend time?

Sweet Sunshine is a free, one-hour guided walk exploring the industrial past of Sunshine through women and migration. Audiences will experience performance, projection, spoken word and soundscapes. Myself and two other artists Genevieve Butler and Anna Kiparis will be creatively responding to Sunshine industry

Former Sunshine MP Mr Ian Baker is severing his political ties after his defeat at the polls following Saturday’s state election. Speaking to The Advocate on Sunday morning, Mr Baker, 55 – who stood as an independent against ALP-endorsed candidate Mr Simon Morgan – said he had accepted the result.

Brimbank’s community leaders have welcomed the dismissal of the Brimbank Council, saying it was a long time coming. Keilor Residents and Ratepayers Association president Susan Jennison described the sacking of the council as a hopeful sign that “democracy will be resurrected”.

What’s that? You’re renovating? I object! It was Groucho Marx who said: “I don’t know what they have to say, it makes no difference anyway. Whatever it is – I’m against it!” And that’s so often the attitude of Australians generally to their neighbours’ applications to do any work at all on their own homes, whether renovations and extensions or rebuilds, insists veteran architect Daniel Meszaros. “As soon as that building notice goes up on a front fence, then all bets are off,” he says, after 45 years of having to deal with building objections – most of which, he claims, run the gamut from stupid to absolutely crazy. “It doesn’t matter that the proposed extensions or work might fully comply with all the regulations; emotions override common sense and neighbourly friendship. “Of course, there are projects that deserve objections but for every one of those, there are 50 baseless ones, ranging from the petty and plain silly to the downright vicious.” Meszaros has now collected some of the weirdest and wackiest objections to applications he’s encountered. “I think people are objecting even more and some of their objections are getting stranger and stranger,” Meszaros says. “People are frustrated, they believe there’s more and more development, and they’re feeling disempowered by the processes.” Among the objections he’s had to deal with have been: • An objection to a neighbour’s TV aerial being slightly over someone’s boundary which meant birds were scared to fly over;

• A neighbour objected to a house, saying she’d be able to see it when standing in her bath; • A neighbour saying that light from an extension window would spoil the view of the moon from his daughter’s telescope at night;

• A neighbour saying paint on a timber extension would come off in strips and the flapping noise would keep her awake at night; • Neighbours objecting to a new house on an empty block because it would ruin their shortcut to the beach;

SPORT ‘Comeback kids’ do it again as Saints take title A recurring theme for St Albans Saints late in the season was their incredible ability to win from large deficits with their backs against the wall. So it was only fitting that the Saints had one more big comeback in them to clinch the National Premier League 2 title with a stupendous come-from-behind 4-2 win over Eastern Lions in the grand final at Jack Edwards Reserve on Friday night. The past four wins of the Saints season came when facing a deficit. The Saints simply don’t give in. Saints coach Kruni Razov has overseen some quality football teams in his time, but none with a collective heart as big as the 2019 ‘comeback kids’. “They just don’t quit,” Razov said. “Their character and their heart to win games and their desire is just incredible.

“This would be one of the best teams that I’ve coached in terms of that never-say-die attitude.” It was starting to turn ugly early on in the grand final for St Albans. Eastern Lions struck first blood through Dan Gathercole after just

two minutes before Thomas Biss doubled the Lions lead in the 16th minute. Aside from the deficit on the scoreboard, St Albans was undermanned with five first teamers unavailable. Instead of moping around the changerooms at half-time, the Saints players proactively sought a solution for their predicament before executing another miraculous comeback. “I only spoke to them for about five minutes at half-time and then I left it to them,” Razov said. “To the boys credit, they came back. “These comebacks are just unbelievable.” St Albans captain Michael Grgic led the charge. Grgic struck twice to have the Saints back on level terms by the 63rd minute. “He’s our go-to man,” Razov said. “He started the season slow and he picked it

up through the middle. “His last eight to 10 weeks have been astounding. “He finds himself in those areas, he gets those headers, his work ethic and he’s always getting those crucial goals. “He’s really stepped up his game as a leader this year.” Hernan Espindola scored to put St Albans in front in the 67th minute and then Joseph Monek rubbed salt into the Lions’ wounds with a game-sealer in the 83rd minute. Razov was proud of the effort of his team, which relished the spoils of victory that came its way. “You get a trophy, you get billboards, they make a big deal out of it,” he said. “To be crowned the best in NPL 2, it does mean a lot.” Lance Jenkinson

Lions hunt another flag By Lance Jenkinson Normal transmission has resumed with Deer Park reaching a seventh consecutive Western Region Football League division 1 grand final. The Lions have dealt with a number of testing situations on and off the field in 2019, but they have come through to book a mouth-watering clash with Altona in the big one at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Lions coach Marc Bullen said his club will be chasing history when it steps out on Saturday. “We’re excited to get into our seventh consecutive grand final,” he said. “If we’re able to achieve a seventh premiership in a row next week, we’ll go down in history. “That’s unprecedented in suburban football.” While the six-time defending champions will take their familiar stand for the national anthem on grand final day, it will be slightly different this time as they stare down an Altona side that is going in as slight favourites. Altona finished the season three games clear on top and have a 3-0 record against Deer Park,

so they deserve to be the favourites. Bullen praised Altona for what it has achieved so far this season, but he is confident his side has what it takes to turn the tables on them in the season decider. “They’re a fantastic side,” he said. “Their defence is absolutely rock solid, they’ve got a fantastic ruckman in Sean Tighe, an outstanding midfield and their forward line is very good as well. “We’ve got our work cut out for us, we’ll go in as underdogs, but they’ve got to play Deer Park on the last day in September and get the job done. “We’re there, we’ve done it, we’ve got the experience and we’ve got players that can win games off their own boot. “We’re confident with where we’re sitting at the moment.” Bullen conceded the run to the grand final this year was “by far” the hardest of the seven. Indifferent form, injuries and a lengthy investigation into Deer Park’s salary cap have weighed on the club.

Bullen believes Saturday’s 27-point win over Spotswood in the preliminary final at Avalon Airport Oval could be a turning point. The Lions will go in with a bit of momentum, whereas Altona has the week off leading into the grand final. “I think the extra game today will give be good for us,” Bullen said. “I think it’s going to add value to us whereas Altona have only played one game in the past month.” Deer Park will be without Jase Perkins, the competition’s leading goalkicker, for the grand final. It is a good thing the Lions finally utilised key forward target Jack Redpath to the fullest, who kicked five goals in the win over Spotswood. While Deer Park has a potent attacking set-up, Redpath is likely to be the focal point and will likely need to kick a bag for his team to win. Will Deer Park be in seventh heaven on Saturday night, or will the WRFL crown a new champion for the first time since Altona lifted the cup back in 2012?

It all went belly up at exactly the wrong time of the season for Albanvale in the Western Region Football League division 3 competition. The Cobras were the most dependable team all winter, but come grand final day, they could barely land a blow in a 26-point loss to Glen Orden at the VU Whitten Oval on Saturday. Cobras coach Andrew Bryson could not fault his side’s energy levels or effort, but was miffed as to why the connection of his team broke down on the most important day of the season. “The energy and effort was there, it was just the execution that let us down,” he said. “We weren’t able to hit our targets, we over-cooked the ball too many times and we were nowhere near as clean as we had been for the most part of the year. Albanvale was on the back foot from the word go. The Cobras trailed by 19 points at quarter-time and just looked a step off the pace because their skills let them down. They breathed life into the contest in the second quarter, but their return of 2.5 for the quarter was not ideal as they still trailed by two goals at half-time. The third quarter was combative from both sides and led to yellow cards being shown to Glen Orden’s Jhoshuar Dean and Soni Rainbow. The Cobras are proud of their minor premiership and the fans are slowly coming back to the club with lots of blue and white in the stands on Saturday. Bryson, who has committed to the club for the next two seasons, is confident that 2019 can be a stepping stone for future success. Lance Jenkinson

Big race rower puts small club on the map Samuel Wilson is proud to represent the relatively small Footscray City Rowing Club at elite levels. Wilson is proof you do not have to be from one of the bigger city clubs to enjoy success in top level competitions. The 16-year-old has dominated in his age level in Victoria this year, winning the under 17s singles title at the state championships and reigning in the Herald and Sporting Globe Shield, a six-week handicap event. Wilson is using his success to promote Footscray City and the sport of rowing in the local area. “We’ve got quite an under-represented club in the juniors,” he said. “To be able to win those competitions and represent the club, it shows that even quite a small club can still produce athletes that can win high level awards. “We need more people down here. “Come and get on the river.” Wilson loves the thrill of race day. When it comes to the final 500 metres of a two kilometre race, he is in his element. “It’s a great sport to do,” he said. “I enjoy the people I’ve met along the way and I love racing. “The best part is when you’ve got to put

everything on the line, especially when you’ve come from the back and you’re racing to get to the front, it’s what I like about the races.” Wilson’s year kicked off on a high with success at the state championships. It gave the West Footscray resident the green light to represent Victoria at the national championships in Penrith. Unfortunately, that is where Wilson’s low point of the season came. The year 11 student at Footscray City College was not afforded the chance to show his best form. “I was really sick at the time, so I wasn’t able to perform at the level I would have liked to,” Wilson said. “My aim is to go back again next year, which will be a bit tougher because I’ll be going in as under-age.” Wilson got healthy in time to compete in the prestigious Herald and Sporting Globe Shield. The event has been held on the Yarra River since 1927 and consists of six handicap races over a two kilometre course. Wilson won five of the six races to take out the shield. Each race he started from the back of the field and worked his way to the front. Wilson secured the shield after the sixth and

final race – the only leg he did not win. He only needed to better the points of one of his closest rivals to take out the shield, so he competed in a more tactical fashion. “It’s quite an honour to win that shield because it’s been going for nearly 100 years,” Wilson said. Wilson is the September nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western

Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. PEGS has taken out the 2019 Hockey Victoria women’s Vic League 2 premiership. Vice captain Anne-Marie Murray scored two goals and captain Claire Aston fired in the other in PEGS’ 3-1 win over Caroline Springs in the grand final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Sunday. It was a fitting result for PEGS, who were the standout team on the season after winning the minor premiership. PEGS will move up to Vic League 1 in 2020.

United’s clean sweep By Lance Jenkinson Calder United has produced some out-of-this-world goals in the NPL Women’s this season, but on the day it was chasing a historic treble, all it took was a toe poke from defender Alycia Eicke to yield the ultimate glory. Having taken out the Nike FC Cup and the premier’s plate, Calder was desperate to complete its 2019 trophy collection and did so with a 1-0 win over FC Bulleen Lions in the grand final at AAMI Park on Sunday. Eicke’s match-winner came a mere seven minutes into the match. Angela Beard played in a cross from a free kick which caused problems for Bulleen goalkeeper Emily Shields. Shields’ mistimed her parry of the ball and after a bobble, it found its way to Eicke, who needed no second invitation to send the ball into the back of the net. On a Calder team with a bevy of goal scoring stars, Eicke was one of the unlikeliest players to

score the winner. “I don’t score too many as a centre-back, so it was nice to score on a big stage like this,” Eicke said. “It’s pretty special.” Calder United has been a scoring machine this season. The Mark Torcaso-coached outfit produced 133 goals at an average of 4.92 per game in the regular season and qualified for the grand final with a six-pack of goals against South Melbourne in the semi-final. However, the meetings with Bullen have been much tougher, with Calder losing two of their three NPL meetings. Once Calder took the lead through Eicke’s goal, there was more of a mentality to protect what they had, rather than go for broke like they have done all year. Calder captain Emma Robers said the mentality in the second half in particular was to protect what they had and not give Bulleen a chance. “That goal really cemented it for us,” Robers said. “The second half was about keeping

control, defending and making sure we got the win in the end.” Aleks Sinclair ended one of the toughest weeks of her life on a bright note. Sinclair is still mourning the passing of her dad earlier in the week, but she found it within herself to give Calder 90 minutes of her best. She capped a fine game with the grand final MVP award. “To come out here is something that he would’ve wanted,” Sinclair said. “This game was for him and I’m so proud of the girls for stepping up and supporting me and being there for me through this tough time. “I know he’d be very proud.” Torcaso was proud of the commitment his Calder United players have shown from the first day of pre-season until the last minute of the grand final. He believes the key to Calder’s success comes through its squad’s depth. “The girls have dug deep since we started back in November last year,” Torcaso said. “We knew we had the squad depth from the start of the year.”

Caroline Springs has fallen at the final hurdle in the Western Region Football League senior women’s. The Lakers went down by 11 points to Spotswood in a thrilling grand final at the VU Whitten Oval on Saturday. It looked as though the Lakers might successfully come back from a 15-point half-time deficit when they took the lead after a goal to Krystyn Raymundo early in the last quarter, but Spotswood steadied to kick the final two goals of the game. It is the second year running that Caroline Springs has lost on grand final day.

Collingwood. But the pressure doesn’t ease up, they now face red-hot favourites Richmond, which has been the form team in the back half of the season. Things are looking good for the Tigers, who come into the game after the week off. Besides players already ruled out for the season, the Tigers are at full strength. Trent Cotchin and Dylan Grimes, who have had injuries late in the season, have another week of training under their belts and will only get better. Their reserves are also through to the VFL preliminary final, so they are flying at Tigerland. The Tigers won’t have it all their own way against the Cats this week. Both sides have star-studded midfields

with multiple Brownlow medallists, and solid contributors the likes of Dion Prestia and Cam Guthrie. Both teams have solid back lines, with the Tigers having the slight edge up forward. The Cats are likely to be without key forward Tom Hawkins, who has been suspended. While the Cats are appealing the decision, they will have started preparing to play without him. It’s a big blow, with Hawkins the Cats most important forward and a key to how the side structures up. How do they cover him? Does Gary Rohan come back in from injury, or could someone like Harry Taylor go forward? If Hawkins is ruled out, the Cats will need some of the lesser known players to stand up. Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield were good last week but there’s only so much they can do. If Geelong plays the way they did last week, it should be one cracker of a game.

The Magpies will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing a Giants team that is coming off a physical and bruising semifinal against Brisbane. Nathan Buckleyâ€™s team has the home ground advantage, where they are currently on a four-game winning streak. The Magpies will proceed with caution though, having lost their most recent battle with the Giants to the tune of 47 points. On their day, Collingwood is as good as any team in the competition because of inspirational leaders such as Steele Sidebottom and Scott Pendlebury and match-winners such as Brodie Grundy and Adam Treloar. If Jordan De Goey does not return from a hamstring injury though, it will leave a lot to do for forwards Jaidyn Stephenson, Jamie Elliott, WIll Hoskin-Elliott and Brodie Mihocek. Can they kick the Magpies a winning score?
