Super shopping boost By Tate Papworth German supermarket giant Kaufland has plans to open a store in Braybrook as part of its Victorian expansion. It comes after the state government approved applications for the company to open stores in Oakleigh South and Coolaroo. Three other stores, in Dandenong, Chirnside Park and Epping, have already received approval. Nine proposed sites, including Braybrook, will be reviewed by an independent panel. Kaufland could not confirm the exact location for it’s proposed Braybrook store when contacted by Star Weekly Weekly.

Arabella’s up for the fight When Arabella Julian began training in Brazilian jiu jitsu in mid 2016, she never imagined just over three years later she’d be competing internationally. The St Albans student will travel to Tokyo, Japan later this month to compete in the international Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation Asian Jiu Jitsu Championships. The 16-year-old said she’s placing high expectations upon herself. “My main goal at this tournament is to go into the fight with the best mindset possible and to roll the way I would at training – to be aggressive, smart and hunt for the submission in every fight,” she said. “I do expect myself to do well, purely because I know my capabilities and how hard I’ve worked to prepare for this tournament and any competition in general.” She said past disappointments have driven her to push herself harder. “I view this as an opportunity to gain more experience.” While excited by the opportunity, Arabella is also eager to explore Japan. “This will be my first time going to Japan and I’m still in awe that I’m actually going.” When Arabella returns it will be all business again. “When I get home from Japan, it’s back to hard training to prepare for the biggest tournament in Australia – the IBJJF Pan Pacific Championships in October.”

Earlier this year, the company announced a $459 million investment to build its distribution centre and headquarters at Merrifield Business Park in Mickleham. Construction began in June. Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas said the centre would be the largest distribution centre in the country – or almost six times the size of the MCG. “This is a huge notch on Victoria’s belt,” he said. “Kaufland’s investment will boost our economy, create jobs and provide opportunities for local businesses.”

Man charged in firearms blitz By Tate Papworth A 51-year-old Brooklyn man has been charged with trafficking two firearms and running a hydroponic cannabis set-up at his property, following a national police operation last month. Operation Athena was designed to target the trafficking and use of illicit firearms throughout the country and involved all policing jurisdictions as well as a number of federal agencies. Law enforcement agencies seized 475
firearms during the week-long operation, 91 of which were in Victoria. A 44-year-old Melton man was also arrested by the special operations group as part of an ongoing firearms investigation. Police also discovered a quantity of ice at the address of a 50-year-old Mickelham man. Operation Athena national chair Detective Superintendent Peter Brigham said the trafficking and use of illicit firearms remains a key law enforcement issue across Australia. “Firearms-related violence is one of the most significant issues we face and we
understand there is immense community concern when it comes to these weapons,” he said. “The results from the week of action, not just in Victoria but right across the country, are testament to the work that’s being done by a number of agencies to target those involved with the trafficking and use of illicit firearms and try and prevent further harm to our communities.” He said the collaborative approach was the key to obtaining high results. “Partnerships with federal and state
law enforcement agencies are key because firearms-related crime is not only a problem here in our own jurisdiction, it’s an issue nationally. A key part of this is reducing the flow of weapons into our state or country. “The community should be reassured we are getting results – we’re arresting people and charging them with serious offences, and we are continuing to seize illicit firearms from criminals every week.” Anyone with information about illicit firearms is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A familiar tale is flying into town, with the latest production from Creekside College set to light up the stage. The Caroline Springs school’s production of Peter Pan Jr will hit the Wyndham Cultural Centre this week, and director Kylie Gral said the show was a good choice for their broad age range. “We were looking for a story that worked well with 8 to 15-year-olds and this one had a great cast range from little fairies to menacing pirates,” Ms Gral said.
Brimbank council has vowed to continue transforming Sunshine into the capital of Melbourne’s west. It has adopted the Sunshine Rising action plan to guide the suburb’s transformation during the next five years. Michelle was well on her way to achieving her dream of becoming a primary school teacher, completing the first year of her degree with results placing her in the top 10 per cent of her class. However, just three days after her 19th birthday, she suffered a near fatal asthma attack, resulting in a severe brain injury.

- Michelle Newland Her brain was deprived of oxygen for 10 minutes and doctors told her family she’d remain in a vegetative state. They underestimated Michelle, who for 14 years has continued her rehabilitation journey, learning to eat, swallow, read and talk again. Today she runs her own business making greeting and special occasion cards and gives motivational talks in schools and workplaces. She’s now turning her attention to bottle tops. “We were driving home one day and we heard how Envision Hands are turning bottle tops into prosthetic limbs for people in Third World countries,” Michelle said. “I thought it was something we could do, so I researched online, made contact with Envision and started collecting. “I’ve had heaps of fun collecting these. It’s crazy to think they can turn these bottle tops

into an arm or a leg,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of people out collecting through my networks. There’s a lot of people who are supporting me. “There’s a couple of thousand tops already.

Brimbank council is looking to define housing character and design objectives for residential areas. The council is conducting a neighbourhood character study, assessing the existing housing character and how it may look in future years. The goal is to have set guidelines so future developments fit accordingly. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said it will help ease possible future conflict. “It’s not uncommon for council to receive community objections and hear concerns about different types of residential developments being proposed in our municipality,” she said. “Until now, councils have had limited authority to set neighbourhood character direction for new residential developments, but that’s changing. “Our draft neighbourhood character study proposes design objectives that could apply to your land, and may influence how you and your neighbours build and develop residential land.” The draft study does not propose to change the current zoning of land, but rather establish the type of building design or features that would best suit neighbourhoods. In June, Kealba residents rallied against a proposed development of more than 200 townhouses and apartments at the former Kealba Secondary College site. One of their objections was the design was out of character with the area. Tate Papworth

Dumpster drama

Two youths, who allegedly jumped into a dumpster to hide from security at a Taylors Lakes shopping centre, had a lucky escape after the bin was emptied into a garbage truck. Police said the boys, aged 11 and 14, got into the dumpster about 4am on September 4. A garbage truck collected the dumpster soon after before driving to its next collection site – Broadmeadows police station. The driver sought assistance from police to rescue the pair after hearing their pleas for help. The boys suffered minor injuries and were assessed by paramedics at the scene.

Three into one does go Sunshine Harvester Primary School is 10. The Hertford Road school celebrated its 10th birthday on Monday with a special assembly, party games and birthday cake. The school, which is the result of the merger of Braybrook, Sunvale and Sunshine East primary schools, opened at the start of 2009 but pupils did not move into the Hertford Road building until September 9 that year. Assistant principal Carolyn Kustura, who has taught at the school since day one, said before then, the pupils were spread across three campuses. “September 9 marks the day the three schools came together. We had students in four different uniforms on that first day because we

had uniforms from three different schools as well as the new uniform,” she said. “It just felt like a day to celebrate.” Ms Kustura said a lot of work had gone into improving the school over the past 10 years. “When we moved in, we had a muddy oval. A lot of money has been spent on the oval and the basketball courts. We have two playgrounds for the kids, a goat, chickens and an outdoor garden,” she said. “The facilities we have in place are very good and our curriculum has been improving year-by-year.” This year, there are 432 pupils enrolled at the school. PM railroads airport link option By Tate Papworth Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Melbourne Airport’s chief have thrown their support behind a “quick link “ tunnel as part of the airport rail link project. It was revealed last week that the state government is considering a cheaper option of using existing rail between Sunshine and the Melbourne CBD, rather than building afresh. Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi told The Age the cheaper approach
would not meet the standards required for the rail to work to its full capacity. “The trip needs to be fast, the service needs to be frequent and the ticket price needs to be affordable and competitive with other modes,” Mr Strambi said. “It is difficult to see those needs being met by sharing existing track capacity which is already congested.” It comes after the state government last week announced its preferred stage one route for the suburban rail loop, which includes a super hub
at Sunshine, connecting regional rail services to suburban loop trains. Super hubs will also be built in Broadmeadows and Clayton and the wider city loop project will connect every metropolitan train line from Cheltenham to Werribee. An authority to lead the design and delivery of the project has also been appointed. The Suburban Rail Loop Authority began work last week, immediately consulting with local government, universities and other key stakeholders on options for stations.
The government said the loop will cut congestion across Melbourne and create more than 20,000 jobs during construction. Premier Daniel Andrews said appointing the authority meant the project was a step closer. “This dedicated new authority will ensure the biggest public transport project in our state’s history becomes a reality,” he said. “The Suburban Rail Loop will better connect Victorians to jobs, education and each other.” For more information visit: suburbanrailloop. vic.gov.au
Moon shines on festival Catholic Regional College St Albans is gearing up for one of its biggest celebrations. The school will be holding its annual moon festival this Thursday, from 6-8pm, in what promises to be a night full of food, laughter and colour. Family engagement leader Laura Cioccia said it’s a night that brings the whole school community together. “The moon festival is recognition and celebration of the Asian community within our school,” Ms Cioccia said. “It’s a real community event. We have parents coming in to cook, the students organising performances and the staff working on it too, so everyone comes together.” She said the headline is always the food. “We have the mums cooking traditional Vietnamese spring rolls, fried chicken … lots of great food. “But the performances are also really great. This year we have a silhouette puppet show
which is centred around re-telling the story of the moon festival.” This year’s festival will be a little different to previous years. “We’ve always involved the whole school, but this year the year 7s have a major role,” Ms Cioccia said. “We’ll be having a lion dance and we’ll actually have year 7 students inside the lion, so there’s a larger involvement.” Ms Cioccia encouraged the community to visit and enjoy the night. World titles are electric By Tate Papworth Electric off-road car racing might not be renowned across the land, but in Keilor it’s thriving. The Keilor Electric Off Road Car Association boasts nearly 150 members and is home to some of the world’s best racers. So deep is the talent pool at the club that it boasts four of the nine members of the Australian contingent heading over to Slovakia for the International Federation of Model Auto Racing world titles. For father and son duo Ray and Lachlan Munday, it’s not the first time they’ve competed at world titles. “We’re really happy that out of nine Australian competitors, four are from Keilor. We’ve got a really strong competitive club here and it’s a great scene,” Ray said. “There’s 150 entries from around the world and you have to qualify to get into it.” He said he’s proud to have been able to pass on the passion to his son. “I’ve been doing it for about 25 years. Dad was involved in motor sports, but we couldn’t afford to do full size racing, so I found this and have loved it ever since. “I did it with my dad and my son Lachlan has been doing it since about seven.” Lachlan has continued to rise through the ranks of the sport, finishing in the top 60 at the last world championships, but he admits it would be nice to beat dad. “Last time I got in the top 60, so this time I’m aiming for top 50,” Lachlan said. “That would be great improvement, nothing too crazy and giving myself something to work for. I’ll try to beat dad, but it’ll be a tricky goal. When he gets to big events he’s really, really fast.”

Thumbs up for Hub revamp The Youth Junction has revamped the Visy Cares Hub, expanding its capacity to offer services across education, employment and training for disadvantaged young people. The new spaces were unveiled recently during an International Youth Day event attended by government representatives, schools, community organisations and philanthropic partners. The event showcased the hub’s new interactive technology and collaborative learning spaces, including the home base hospitality space. Youth Junction communications manager Kristine Bugeja said it was great acknowledgment of the work done by the group. “We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating the young people’s achievements through the Youth Learning Pathways project. “It was great to acknowledge our strong partnership with Victoria University and showcase our revamped training and education spaces for disadvantaged young people. “Indigenous artist Robert Young spoke of his incredible Aboriginal ‘Youthscape’ artwork and future art programs he will be facilitating at the Youth Junction.” The group also announced a new program, the North-West Youth Learning Pathways, which it says will assist 270 young people find education, training and employment opportunities by 2020. A funeral may be the last place you’d expect a love story to be set, but How I Met My Dead Husband isn’t your typical love story. Billed as a cabaret funeral, the performance features musical numbers in Mandarin, English and French. Lansy Feng wrote the play and is the solo performer. She said it’s been a surreal experience. “It’s definitely been a challenge performing a one-woman show, especially one like this where it’s a roller coaster of emotions,” she said. “I remember doing the first rehearsal and there was lots of crying and laughing. Performing is so much different than writing, I really got a sense of what my character was feeling and all the things she’s had to overcome.”
Ms Feng said audiences can expect a roller coaster of emotions, but the main message is clear. “The purpose of the story is to send out a message of love. “We see this woman chasing for love, trying to find what love really is through heaven and hell in each life, and ignoring her family and friends. And then she comes to realise that love is more than what she thought it was. “Love is loving yourself, love is cherishing your family and friends who love you.” The play is showing at the Bowery Theatre. Residents rail over tunnel works By Tate Papworth Sunshine residents near Metro Tunnel works say they have been left out of the loop when it comes to communication. Work has begun on a new signal control centre on Derby Road as part of the tunnel works. But residents say a flyer notifying them of the works just days before construction started is not good enough. “Not a good start to RVP (Rail Projects Victoria)/Sunshine community

The flyer states that the works will result in medium levels of construction noise, possible dust and vibration issues and increased truck and machinery movements on and around Hampshire and Derby roads. However a resident told Star Weekly that they had concerns about what measure were being taken to minimise impact on schools, business and residents. A Rail Projects Victoria spokesperson said procedures were in place to lessen the impact of works.
“Site establishment works began on 26 August this year and residents and businesses likely to be affected by construction were notified in advance. “Construction activities are unlikely to cause vibration or create significant amounts of dust,” the spokesperson said. “Regular monitoring will be carried out on all environmental aspects of the construction … including noise and dust levels. “To mitigate this, street sweepers and dust suppressants will be used when required.”
The spokesperson said construction will be complete by mid 2020. However a notice received by residents flags ongoing use of the site as required during Metro Tunnel construction. The spokesperson said information about a control centre being constructed at Sunshine was included when the Victorian government announced contracts for the project in July 2017. The control centre will co-ordinate new signals being introduced along the Sunbury rail line.
Park policy on a roll Skaters can now drop in, kick flip or ollie to Delahey Recreation Reserve. The council has completed works on a new skate park and mayor Lucinda Congreve invited everyone down for the grand opening. “Council is thrilled to deliver the much-needed Delahey Skate Park and gathering space for local junior skateboarders and scooter riders,” she said. “Come along and join us to celebrate the newly upgraded skate park at Delahey Recreation Reserve, on Wednesday, September 11 at 10am-1pm. “There will be plenty of family entertainment and a sausage sizzle, all at no charge.” Entertainment on the day will include learn-to-skate sessions and build a deck workshops. The $300,000 project is part of the council’s creating better parks policy. Cr Congreve said providing the best quality

Along with the addition of these services, Route 459 will be realigned to include extending the route further north along Claret Ash Boulevard, and an increase to services during peak times. The new services and the adjustment to Route 459 will begin late 2019. It was a pleasure to attend the opening of the newly upgraded Rockbank Station last month.
The upgraded station is modern and accessible. It features longer platforms, more than 350 parking spaces, improved shelter, security and lighting, and an accessible pedestrian overpass—a real boost for our community. Cr Ken Hardy I believe the foundation upon which the City of Melton is built comprises four key pillars: health, employment, education and roads infrastructure. Previously, I’ve discussed the social and economic impact of not having a public hospital in our municipality, along with the importance of local jobs creation. On this occasion, I’d like to discuss education, specifically tertiary and TAFE offerings within our City. There’s a strong correlation between the ability to secure ongoing employment and access to quality education. Tertiary and TAFE offerings underpin the growth of permanent local jobs, and creates opportunities for people to gain meaningful employment closer to home. I continue to advocate on behalf of residents for the establishment of a tertiary and TAFE presence in our community, and for the development of
a strategy that identifies opportunities for specialised skills development in the emerging industries set to be located in our key employment precincts, like Cobblebank. Similarly important to the ongoing social and economic sustainability of our municipality is improved roads infrastructure. In particular, I continue to advocate for the widening of Brooklyn, Clarkes and Bulmans roads, and the construction of an interchange along the Western Highway at Bulmans Road. It’s important for residents to mobilise in the way they did for the Build Melton Hospital campaign, and voice support for this critical infrastructure. Airport set for new hotel By Tate Papworth Work on a 464-room hotel at Melbourne Airport has begun. The first sod on the new $163 million hotel was turned last week. Melbourne Airport chief of property Linc Horton said it’s the latest step in supporting Melbourne to become the country’s biggest city. “It is really exciting to bring such a great new hotel concept to one of the great travel destinations in Australia – Melbourne, giving travellers more choice and amenity,” Mr Horton said.
“We believe this new development will bring a much-needed social hub to our space bringing visitors and business colleagues together on the doorstep of the airport with access to more than 650 flights per day.” The hotel will be located near Terminal 4 in a new precinct to be called The Hive. The 10-storey hotel will boast a gym and pool facilities, a café, bar and restaurant, and conference room facilities. The hotel is the first major development to kick-start the airport’s Hive precinct, which will also feature a childcare facility, to cater for children of the airport’s 20,000-strong

workforce, as well as office space ranging from 1000 to 10,000 square metres. Mr Horton said 120 job opportunities will be created when the hotel opens. Accor Pacific chief operating officer Simon McGrath said the hotel will perfectly compliment the location. “With more than 650 flights in and out of Melbourne Airport every day, we’re confident that this hotel will quickly become a new destination in itself for passengers, offering … accommodation, amenities and conferencing, just steps away from Terminal 4,” Mr McGrath said. The hotel is scheduled to open in 2021.
Sunshine’s Duke Street Community House has received a cash boost to further develop its All Abilities Pathways Initiative. The community house secured $45,000 to further develop the program which offers peer training workshops for learners with a disability. Six people completed the workshops recently and all are now in employment, further training, or volunteering. They have used their new skills and experience living with a disability to design and facilitate a new program – Taking the Next Steps. The program aims to help people with disability who face barriers to education and employment set goals and gain confidence to move into further training. Member for Footscray Katie Hall joined Minister for Training and Skills and Higher Education Gayle Tierney at the community house last week to celebrate Adult Learners Week. While there they announced the recipients of the next round of Learn Local grants. About 60 projects will share in $2.8 million funding. “Learn Local [grants] provide Victorians with the opportunity to take their first step in training and on the path to a job – they are a crucial part of the training system,” Ms Tierney said. Spring is in the air and the garden at St Theresa’s Primary School is in full bloom. Pupils at the school have transformed a disused patch of land into a flourishing garden. Family school partnership leader Greg Woolford said the garden project has created a real sense of community. “We worked together, painted murals, built the garden and put in a chess game. We then developed a gardening club in 2018, which is ongoing,” he said. “The club is now thriving. It meets weekly, grows produce, sells it to the community then uses that money to buy more goods for the garden. “They mainly sell produce at the end of the

Boxer’s fighting words A former professional boxer has traded the gloves for the pen. St Albans man Ivan Rukavina has released a biography on his remarkable career. My Fighting Life chronicles Rukavina’s life from arriving in Australia as a migrant from Croatia, to discovering his passion for boxing and the ups and downs that come with life. “I’d had a lot of interest from people in my story, so I decided to put it down in a book,” he said. “I had about 150 amateur fights and won about 125 before turning professional.” Rukavina said turning professional was the highlight of his career but it was short-lived after a freak accident. “I broke my shoulder skiing, which really set me back. I attempted to come back, had three
fights in New Zealand, but then broke my wrist in a car accident. “In all I had about 17 fights. I won nine, but I was never knocked out, so there’s only one I’m prepared to admit I lost.” He said his greatest achievement came as an amateur. “I won the King’s Cup for Australia in Thailand, that’s probably my biggest achievement in the sport. “I also trained for the Seoul Olympics, but injury got me and I missed selection.” While proud of his achievements, Rukavina said it was a challenge to put it all into words. What do you like best about the area? We’ve been here for 10 years now. It’s central to everything we need. There’s good schools, we’re close to the city, local shops and footy clubs. The people are great too. What could be improved? I would’ve said the railway, but that’s just been fixed with the overpass. Traffic is still a little hectic in the morning, especially during the peak period and school drop-off. You’ve recently won some photography awards? I’ve taken out four awards at the Victorian Professional Photography Awards. I entered four in the newborn category and four in family. All received silver scores, which is between 80-85. I’ve had my images receive awards consistently for the past six years, so it’s been a thrill to be recognised.

Sunshine and Footscray Councils are at loggerheads over the possible prosecution of SCI Meat and Paper Pty. Ltd (Smorgons). Footscray Council believes Sunshine should initiate legal proceedings against Smorgons for operating an offensive trade.
H and G Town Planning and Development, the consultancy which two years ago assured Sunshine Council there was no lead contamination of the old battery site in Forrest St, Ardeer, now shares the same office building in Caulfield North as Chester and Fein, the company which bought and developed the site for housing.
Plans to establish a program in St Albans for young people with a mental illness has prompted outrage among neighbours. More than 80 residents from Bent, Derson and nearby streets have voiced their opposition to the State Government blueprint which will see a living support program for mentally ill 16 to 24-year-olds from a residential rehabilitation unit close to their homes.
Confusion over whether a piece of contaminated land in Cairnlea has been remediated has one Brimbank councillor concerned for residents who live nearby. Cr Geraldine Brooks said she had received conflicting information from authorities about the site, on Ballarat Road, right next to a housing development.

Jets fail to fire as season ends By Lance Jenkinson It was a wild ride for the Western Jets in the NAB League this season, but it came to an end with a 35-point loss to Gippsland Power in the semi-final at Ikon Park on Saturday. The Jets had dreams of going all the way in the finals, but a semi-final exit was about right for what they delivered in the season on the whole. Jets football operations manager Matthew Dervan was pleased with how his side acquitted themselves during the finals, including wins in the wildcard round and the elimination final. “It’s what the game is all about, showing what you can do at this time of the year,” he said. “We faced some formidable opposition over the past three weeks and I think the boys will learn a lot from the experience and take it into wherever their next football journey is. “There were a few boys who upped their level of performance at the right time of the year when there’s more scrutiny and more eyes from the AFL clubs.” Western Jets made a positive start to the semi-final and led by five points at quarter-time. However, scoring dried up for the Jets in the second and third quarters as they could only manage two behinds while the Power kicked out to a 39-point lead by three-quarter time. “We definitely started the better of the two sides,” Dervan said. “We led at quarter-time and there was a really confident and positive vibe heading into the first break. “Unfortunately we couldn’t sustain it.”
Gippsland strangled the life out of the Western Jets after quarter-time. The Power’s defence has conceded on average 59 points a game this season and it turned up the heat once again. “Despite trying a few different methods of attack, we just weren’t good enough,” Dervan said. “Credit to Gippsland’s back six and defensive structure, they were just too good for us on the day.” As is the case every season, there is a high volume of turnover for all NAB League clubs. Knowing victory was a long shot, the Jets knew the fourth quarter would be the last for a number of their star top-age players. O’Keefe implored his team to give one last push – particularly those featuring in a Jets jumper for the last time – to finish on a high. The Jets out-scored Gippsland in the fourth quarter, kicking four goals to three. “Some of the guys have put two or three years of really hard work into the program,” Dervan said. “Ryan challenged them at three-quarter time to not let themselves down and show something in that last quarter and finish on a high note. “I think we did that pretty well.” Daly Andrews finished his Jets career off with a best-on-ground performance. The midfield ball magnet also kicked two goals – one of only two Jets players on the day to kick multiple goals, with the other being Archi Manton. “He worked tirelessly as an inside mid,” Dervan said.

SPORT Eagles hit the target for five-year plan for promotion North Sunshine Eagles had a vision to build up to National Premier League standard in a five-year block and it achieved its timeline to perfection with promotion from the Football Victoria men’s state league 1 north-west on Saturday. The Eagles secured their elevation to the newly formed NPL 3 next season with a commanding 2-0 win over Essendon Royals on the road at Cross Keys Reserve. It was a landmark day for Eagles coach Ben Isai and his club, which had gone so agonisingly close to promotion 12 months earlier, missing out by two measly points. The Eagles would not be denied this time and confirmed their NPL status for the first time in the club’s history. “Everyone is ecstatic, the players, coaches, club, committee and sponsors,” Isai said. shaky after champions Preston Lions beat them 3-0 on July 28. The never-say-die Eagles have been flawless since that day, claiming a maximum 15 points in that time. “The Preston game did knock us a bit because we didn’t think we were a three-goal worse team,” Isai said.
“We went there with such high hopes. “I’m proud of the way they responded after that game. We could’ve easily drawn another game or lost another game and we wouldn’t have been going up. “We’ve won a lot of games that we’ve had to come from behind or just hang on.” Isai led a change in mentality, going away from his own defence-first approach and allowing his players to express themselves on the ball. Sure, the Eagles conceded a few more goals than Isai would have liked, but they were able to out-gun their opposition more often than not. “We’ve changed our structure a little bit and we’re a bit more attacking compared to what I’m traditionally used to doing,” Isai said. “We gave them a bit more freedom and I think that helped them a lot.” It was fitting that Nick Epifano got on the scoreboard for North Sunshine on the day it
was promoted as he has been in scorching form with 15 goals in 14 games. He not only scored the opening goal from the penalty spot, he created the penalty when he was taken down. After much huffing and puffing without luck in attack, North Sunshine finally got the insurance goal through Ryan Dragovic. The set up play by Diellon Memishi was just as important as the slick Dragovic finish. “It was good work by Diellon [Memishi] who chased down a lost cause and cut it back to Ryan, who placed it nicely from around the penalty spot,” Isai said. In a game where North Sunshine had contributors one through to 11, captain Shane Rexhepi was the one player to stand out. Calder crushes South By Lance Jenkinson Calder United was cold blooded in its mauling of South Melbourne in the NPL Victoria women’s soccer semi-final. A rampaging Calder scored all six of its goals in a breathtaking first half of a 6-1 shellacking of a fierce rival at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve on Saturday. “They were just ruthless, absolutely ruthless,” Calder president Eric Psarianos said. “I don’t think anyone would’ve got near them today. “They were absolutely brilliant.” It took a mere 30 seconds for Calder United to stamp their authority on the scoreboard. Stacey Papadopoulos kicked off the festivities with the game’s opening goal. She finished with two goals in the rout. Papadopoulos’ success in attack was a big tick for Calder coaches Mark Torcaso and Ian Williamson. Papadopoulos had been predominantly
used in the back half for Calder this season because of the success of the team’s front three of Aleks Sinclair, Angie Beard and Catherine Zimmerman – recently dubbed “the three-headed dragon”. While the dragon is nigh on impossible to slay, Torcaso and Williamson knew other teams were finding creative ways to lessen their impact, so they turned to the answer, Papadopoulos. “They can’t stop them, but they try and restrict them and negate their influence and I think sides have worked out to some degree how to restrict them as best as they can,” Psarianos said. “They [the coaches] were smart enough to get another good runner up the field in Stacey and it’s worked a treat the last two weeks. “The move has caught one or two people by surprise. “She’s playing out of her skin, she was absolutely on fire.” In between Papadopoulos’ two goals, Beard

After a hat-trick last week, Beard is causing nightmares for defenders. “She’s been in really good goal scoring form,” Psarianos said. Leading 4-0, Calder United received a gift in the form of an own goal. Any doubts over which side was heading to the grand final were allayed when Gulcan Koca made it six in a half in the 43rd minute. South Melbourne got a consolation goal through Kelsey Minton early in the second half, but it did nothing to dampen the spirits of Calder, which is gunning for a treble, following glory in the Nike FC Cup and securing the premier’s plate for finishing on top. Calder United will meet FC Bulleen Lions in the grand final at AAMI Park on Saturday. The Lions advanced to the big dance with a 3-1 win over Alamein on Sunday evening.
St Albans Saints are back in the big time. The Saints have been promoted to the top flight National Premier League after a dominant 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory at Churchill Reserve on Sunday. Things were looking shaky for St Albans early in the match. They trailed in the 18th minute when Victory’s Nishan Velupillay was the finisher on a slick counter-attacking goal. With so much on the line for St Albans, it did not want to wait too long for a response. The Saints swung into action and found a quick equaliser through Joseph Monek in the 29th minute. Monek incredibly scored directly from the corner. Four minutes later, a strong play from Ayodeji Omoboye earned a free kick for St Albans when he was dragged down. It would result in a championshipwinning goal to Jordan Wilkes, who followed up after Monek’s free kick was parried away and he launched a powerful strike into the bottom corner. St Albans only needed a point to secure the title, but it went one better with all three. The Saints will return to the Victoria’s top competition for the first time since 2017. Lance Jenkinson

Deer Park remains confident despite loss to Altona Deer Park is taking a standing eight count in the Western Region Football League division 1 finals. The six-time defending champions took a few blows in a 19-point loss to grand final-bound Altona at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, but they will live to fight another day. “Altona’s pressure was red hot,” Lions coach Marc Bullen said. “They’re a very good side, well-drilled side, well executed.” Even though Bullen praised Altona for securing the minor premiership and the first grand final berth, he believes his side has tremendous upside for the rest of the finals. Bullen felt like the Lions were their own worst enemy in the loss to the Vikings. His team is normally the calmest under finals pressure and has shown that repeatedly over the years, but not on this day. Elementary skill errors in attack hurt Deer Park’s chances of victory. “We’re never going to win a final when we butcher the footy like we did forward of centre,” Bullen said. “Our execution by foot was deplorable.

“The third quarter, we probably went in 10 times and six or seven of them were kicked straight to the opposition.” That third quarter was the killer for Deer Park. While they could not execute forward of centre, Altona was ruthless going the other way.
The Vikings banged on six goals to one in that quarter to all but secure the victory. Ill-discipline crept in at times for Deer Park as for the second week in a row, the Lions gave away two 50-metre penalties. In a close game, those could have been costlier. “Ill-disciplined acts can really hurt us,” Bullen said. “Last week we gave away two 50-metre penalties and this week I think the same. “Our blokes have to tighten up a bit because it’s an area opposition clubs can target and only one or two per cent can cost you games.” It was not all bad for Deer Park. The Lions ticked a lot of boxes, in particular the success of their defensive assignments. Tim Quick and Jackson Barling were colossal in the backline for the Lions. “If you had’ve said before the game we’d keep [Elliot] Cavallaro to two goals, [Patrick] Rose to one and [Mitch] Turnbull to none, I thought we’d win the game of footy,” Bullen said. Another positive was the game of Deer Park teenager Aaron Britten who swooped on every ball in his direction on the half-back line.

“He was our best player on the park,” Bullen said. “He just continually stood up in key moments and used the footy well.” Spirits among the Deer Park players were still high on Saturday night despite the loss. Cub president Mark McGoldrick invited the players and coaches around to his house for pizza and beers following the game for team bonding. The Lions will prepare for a preliminary final date with Spotswood at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. In division 2, Wyndhamvale has set up a grand final showdown with Yarraville Seddon at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. The Falcons advanced to the big one with a hard-fought seven-point win over Parkside. Glen Orden is through to the division 3 grand final after pummelling Sunshine Heights by 62 points in the preliminary final at Pennell Reserve. By Tara Murray Keilor put in a gutsy performance to overcome Aberfeldie and be the first team through to the Essendon District Football League premier division grand final. After kicking the first goal of the game, the Blues were doing the chasing for the next three quarters. After trailing by as much as 22 points, the Blues hit the front midway through the last quarter and held on to win 9.13 (67)-7.11 (53). Blues coach Mick McGuane said it was a taxing game in some tough conditions. For much of the first half heavy rain was falling, making it difficult for players. “I’m just full of admiration for this group,” he said. “Full credit has got to go to the players, they fought it out and now get the week off.” Despite kicking just one goal in the first half the Blues were well and truly in the game. They kicked a couple of goals early in the third quarter, before the Gorillas responded. At three-quarter time the margin was 16 points and it was quickly 22 points when the Gorillas kicked the first goal of the last quarter. McGuane said they did not give up hope at the last break. He said the weather clearing up also helped to fire up their team game. They also started to use the fundamentals such as ball handling, decision-making and the balance between kicks and handballs. “It was about 39 inside 50s at that end of the ground to 18,” he said. “So we knew we were kicking to the end of the ground where most of the ball had lived. “It was always going to be hard. “We’ve got a lot of ability to score and we didn’t play well in the first half. “We changed the way we wanted to play and we gave our forward line a good look and controlled territory in the last quarter. “To kick 5.6 against a team up by 22 points with 27 minutes to play, not many people saw that coming.” McGuane was also full of praise for Aberfeldie and the pressure they put on his side. Matthew Clark kicked three goals, all coming in the third quarter. Stefan Radovanovic, Todd Stevenson and Dylan Joyce were named the Blues’ best. McGuane said they would take some lessons from the win into their next match. “It was a taxing game today and we’re going to sit back and enjoy the moment and then get to work. We’ll … get our heads around this moment and enjoy it.” McGuane said they were unlikely to get any of their injured stars back for the grand

Geelong and West Coast, who will face-off this week in a semi-final clash, couldn’t have started their finals campaign in more contrasting ways. Kicking off the finals series, West Coast looked impressive against Essendon. The likes of Liam Ryan, Lewis Jetta and Willie Rioli excited fans, while Josh Kennedy returned to form with four goals as the Eagles trounced Essendon, 17.14 (116)-9.7 (61). Big man Nic Naitanui returned for the Eagles and looked like he hadn’t missed a beat. The Eagles face a tough road ahead. If the reigning premiers are to go back-toback they will need to win in Melbourne three weeks in a row. Their first task is against Geelong, which was disappointing against Collingwood.
Byes have become the Cats worst nightmare and that proved the case on Friday night. The Cats failed to fire, with the Magpies winning, 9.7 (61) - 7.9 (51). The Cats lacked the composure needed to keep with the ‘Pies – Patrick Dangerfield was the only one that really got going. The Cats forwards struggled to get much of the ball and when they did they wasted opportunities. Tom Hawkins was below par with just 10 possessions. He kicked four points, which isn’t good enough for an All-Australian. The Cats, will be sweating on the fitness of Mitch Duncan who hurt his knee.
