Toys need a friend By Tate Papworth The Albion Toy Library is on the verge of being homeless. The much-loved library has been operating out of Albion Primary School for three years, but the school’s redevelopment means there’s no longer room for the library. Albion Toy Library secretary Jeni Paton said the volunteer-run library needs a home, fast. “We’re so thankful to Albion Primary School, we initially thought we might be able to stay on, but we’ve recently been told that’s not the case and we have to be out by the start of the school holidays [September 23],” Ms Paton said.

“We just don’t know at this stage what we’re going to do. We’ve kindly been offered a place at the Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House, but that’s not ideal because we’ve got a lot of toys. “We’re short on options so we may have to end up there, but it would mean hiring a shipping container and storing a large amount of toys in the garages of volunteers too.” The library has almost 50 members and an extensive collection of more than 300 toys. The Albion branch has been so successful that in 2018 it was voted runner-up for the 2018 Best Small Toy Library in Australia. Ms Paton said it’s more than just a place to borrow toys.

“It’s also a great place for families to come together and make local connections,” she said. “Every session is a ‘stay and play’, so kids get to try out the toys before they borrow them. “It’s a really welcoming space for children and adults – we offer tea, coffee, friendship and support when they’re having a tough day.” She said no stone would be left unturned in the search for a new home. “We are excited about the future – we have so many ideas for projects, we just have a bit of a hurdle. “If anyone knows of a space that could accommodate us we’d love to hear from them – community groups, churches … anyone.”

The long-awaited redevelopment of Sunshine Hospital’s emergency department is a step closer. Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos on Friday released designs for the $29.6 million project, which will add an extra 31 treatment spaces and include a separate area for children. About 19,700 children are expected to be seen each year in the kids-only area. The government is also investing $5.3 million to build a new mental health and drug and alcohol centre and will create an additional 12 short-stay beds and 12 treatment cubicles as part of the redeveloped emergency department. Once complete, the number of available treatment spaces will more than double from 55 to 120, meaning an additional 59,000 emergency patients will be able to be treated each year. “The Sunshine Hospital emergency department is one of the busiest in metropolitan Melbourne,” Ms Mikakos said. “We’re upgrading it so that more local patients can get the world-class treatment they need, faster. “A trip to the emergency department can be frightening for kids … we’re making sure they can get the care they need in a calm, welcoming environment.” The redevelopment has long been sought by Western Health. In August last year a Western Health spokesperson told Star Weekly that the hospital’s emergency department was operating beyond its physical capacity, treating more than 250 patients a day. Work on the emergency department will begin in October and is expected to be complete by 2021. The government says 100 jobs will be created during the peak of construction. Tate Papworth

New terms for gaming venue By Tate Papworth Brimbank council is proposing a radical lease agreement with a major sporting club to help curb gambling losses crippling the municipality. According to a council report, a market rental assessment of a proposed lease and associated license for St Albans Sports Club to use Kings Park Reserve, in Gillsepie Road St Albans, determined the full commercial value of the lease as $270,000 per annum.

However, the club could reduce that figure to as much as $54,000 per annum if it is able to sufficiently demonstrate it is meeting gambling harm reduction measures set by the council. The club currently operates 35 state government-approved gaming machines at the site. According to the Victorian Gaming Commission, a total of $5,167,145.47 was lost by gamblers at the club during the past financial year. A total of $142.9 million, equal to $879 for every adult, was lost at the 15 gaming venues

Skate park ready to roll Brimbank will celebrate the opening of two new parks this month. The highly anticipated Delahey Skate Park, located at the Delahey Recreation Reserve, will officially open on September 11 with activities from 10am-1pm. Learn to skate sessions, a ‘design a deck’ project and a sausage sizzle will be held on the day. The $300,000 project is part of Brimbank council’s creating better parks policy. Also part of the policy is the Green Gully Reserve Playground, which will be re-opened on September 21. The upgraded playground features a tower with two slides, a swing set, balancing and climbing posts, nature play areas, picnic setting and seats and native bird sculptures. A new toilet, two fitness stations, the planting of canopy trees and low cover garden bed shrubs and flowers have also been included as part of the upgrades. While both parks are set to be unveiled, work is continuing on other Brimbank park projects. Work is under way on a $3.34 million transformation of the Lakes Reserve in Taylors Lakes which will include a new activities and leisure area, improved playground, better views and more space for picnics. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve encouraged the community to get out and enjoy the new parks. “The ongoing development and upgrading of Brimbank’s many parks, playgrounds and open spaces means there is something for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

Push to end trolley folly By Tate Papworth A Caroline Springs resident is on a one-man crusade to rid the suburb of dumped shopping trolleys. Gerald Evans says the problem has been an ongoing issue. “I went on a walk the other night and came across more than 20 dumped at various locations,” he said. “I’ve spoken to the manager at Coles and I was told that in the past the trolleys were all coin operated, whereas now they’re not.” Mr Evans said he was fed up with the lack of action. “I’ve spoken to the council about it and I get told to report the trolleys, but it’s just a continuing cycle. “We cop a bit of a bad reputation in Caroline Springs with crime and things of that nature, so I’m on a one-man crusade to make it a bit of a better place in this small way.” Melton council acting manager compliance Andrew Mason said the onus was on retailers to keep trolleys secure. “Council manages the Caroline Springs Lake and, at times, has to remove shopping trolleys … as part of regular maintenance and cleaning of the local area,” Mr Mason said. “Retailers are responsible for shopping trolleys and have reporting services that residents can use to have trolleys collected. “We respond to collection requests when a shopping trolley hasn’t been picked up by the retailer. In these cases, we impound the trolley and issue an infringement to the retailer. “We are working with the major retailers to ensure they are addressing this issue. “We also support the use of coin-based trolleys as a way of getting more people to return trolleys.”

Hospital carpark finally opens The Sunshine Hospital has unveiled a new multi-deck carpark. The structure was opened last week following 18 months of construction and coincides with the building of the adjacent Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The project was five years in the making and marks a multi-million dollar investment from Western Health. The eight-storey, multi-deck contains 1000 car spaces, increasing the number of public parking spaces by a third. Western Health support services divisional director Christine Neumann said the investment would make life easier. “We’re delighted to be opening our new multideck carpark for the use of staff, volunteers and members of the public. This has been a significant landmark infrastructure development for Western Health on the Sunshine Hospital campus, coming shortly after the opening of the neighbouring Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s,” she said. “Our investment in car parking means people will be able to access more spots closer to the main buildings on campus.” The Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital was opened in May. The $200 million hospital includes 20 maternity delivery rooms, 237 beds, 39 special care nursery cots, four theatres and additional clinics. Tate Papworth

True blue Blues festival A day-long blues music festival will be held at Newport’s Substation this month. Newport Folk Club’s Tues Blues group is hosting the West of the Blues fest, headlined by Phil Manning and featuring eight musicians and bands from the west. The event, also featuring an art exhibition, performance anxiety workshop and open mic session, will support the work of Beyond Blue. Brimbank police have issued a warning to parents following three reports of students possessing Balisong knives while at school. Police said they were called to three schools in Brimbank and Melton last week. The knives are similar to a Butterfly knife and are commonly used in martial arts training with blunt blades. However, the knives are classed as a prohibited weapon.

Murder charge

A Darley man has been charged with murder following the death of a man on August 16. Police said a 40-year-old Darley man was found dead in a vehicle in a shopping centre carpark off Neal Road, just after 5.30pm. A 47-year-old Darley man was also found in the vehicle and taken to hospital for treatment. He has since been charged with murder. Lighting up Sunshine

Kite festival flies to new venue

By Tate Papworth The Sunshine Lantern Festival is celebrating a decade of lighting up Brimbank. More than 55,000 people flocked to the multicultural festival last year and Sunshine Business Association president Carson Luk said a bigger crowd is expected in 2019. “We’re celebrating 10 years, building on the legacy created when this all started,” he said. “It’s a bit earlier this year so it doesn’t clash with things like the AFL grand final and other major events around Melbourne, but we got over 50,000 last year and there’s no reason why we won’t get more this year.” The family-focused event will feature foods from around the globe, entertainment, rides, street performers, animals, music, dancing and the ever popular lantern festival, which will be filled with light from 4000 battery-powered animal-shaped lanterns. “Food is always popular with the punters and the fireworks show is also a big hit,” Mr Luk said. “This year we’ll also be incorporating some elements from White Night – we’ll have a giant puppet of a Corrobboree frog and a redback spider.” With a large crowd expected, no stone has been left unturned with security. “We’ve been in constant contact with the police in the lead-up to the event, it’s something we obviously take very seriously,” Mr Luk said. “There’s no intelligence to suggest anything is amiss, but it only takes one incident to undo 10 years of goodwill.” The festival will be held on Sunday, September 15 from 11am to 8pm. It is held along the Hampshire Road shopping precinct.

Brimbank kite enthusiasts will be taking to different skies this year. The ever popular Sydenham Kite Festival has changed venues and name. The event will now be held on Sunday, November 24 at Kings Park Reserve, off Gillespie Road, and will be known as the Brimbank Kite Festival. Festival organiser Anni Ang said the regular venue in Delahey was unavailable and she hoped the name change would extend interest. “The name change may see the start of pop-up kite flying sessions around Brimbank in the near future,” she said. “We look forward to seeing you all on Sunday, November 24. “Come with your camera to capture the moment; and the wide range of giant and novelty kites.” The kite festival started in 2011 and has since been held annually. People of all ages an backgrounds have painted the sky in a kaleidescope of colour with kites ranging from simple triangle designs to more elaborate box kites. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own kites, but some can be purchased at the festival. Free kites will be provided for children under 10 while stocks last. Food trucks, a sausage sizzle, activities and kite-making demonstrations will be held throughout the day. Turning lives around By Tate Papworth An automotive school in Braybrook has been helping troubled youth make a U-turn and get their lives back on track for a quarter of a century. The Hand Brake U-Turn program was started in 1994 in Port Melbourne as a diversion program for young people coming out of youth justice. It has since moved to Braybrook and last week celebrated the 10,000th student to complete the seven-week program. Jayden, a Year 9 student from Staughton College, Melton South, was referred to

Hand Brake U-Turn by his teachers after becoming disengaged at school. He happily agreed and his teacher said he immediately showed his love for cars, especially all things Holden. Program manager Ian Dubbeld lauded Jayden’s commitment to the program. “Jayden has attended every class for seven weeks and has shown a real dedication to work in the automotive industry and I’m sure he will do well,” he said. Having finished the program, Jayden now aspires to be a mechanic. He recently applied for a role at a local Holden dealership, which he

hopes will launch his career. Jayden is just one of many success stories to come out of the program, which runs three days a week and teaches automotive and life skills for young people aged 15–21. A 2017 program graduate, Phil, was last year nominated for Apprentice Motor Mechanic of the Year. Phil was a youth offender and credits the program with turning his life around. “I used to want to steal cars, now I want to fix cars,” Phil said. The state government has provided a $10 million loan to SKM’s receivers to clean up thousands of tonnes of recycling stockpiled in warehouses around Melbourne. Last month, six large warehouses filled with stockpiled recycling waste were located across Derrimut, Sunshine, Laverton and Campbellfield. The government money will help SKM clean up the stockpiles and resume collecting recyclable waste. The clean-up began last week and the company is expected to resume processing waste within the next five weeks. Its Laverton site will be the first to return to operation. SKM’s collapse threw Victoria’s kerbside recycling collections into chaos with several councils, including Brimbank, forced to send thousands of tonnes of recycling to landfill. The loan comes on top of the government’s $6.6 million financial relief package handed out to councils directly affected by the closure of SKM. Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio said the kerbside recycling system is set to be overhauled. “This loan is the fastest way of getting recyclable materials sent to processing sites instead of landfill. “An overhaul of kerbside collection is the next step in getting our recycling sector back on track.” Tate Papworth

Spotlight on suicide prevention By Tate Papworth Kerry King knows the value of a kind word better than most. She has offered warm words and support for parents and families bereaved by suicide for a number of years through The Compassionate Friends Western Suburbs Support group in Sunshine. Ms King lost her son Lee to suicide nine years ago and said the support group has been a lifeline.

“It’s very hard because family and friends … they don’t want to talk about it,” Ms King said. “Where[as] you can go to this group, cry, laugh. You can say the funny things they did or the naughty things they did. And you know you’re keeping your child alive inside of you.” Next week marks World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, and RU OK Day, September 12. Both days are designed to encourage people to talk about suicide and check in with friends or family who might be doing it tough. However, Ms King said without the

appropriate training, it can be difficult to have effective conversations. “You just really don’t know sometimes how to get into that conversation,” she said. “And if they do say, ‘no I’m not feeling OK’, then it’s hard to try to say, ‘well, can I help you’.” The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network is attempting to make the conversations easier. The network is offering 500 free registrations for online suicide prevention training for people living in Brimbank.

The training teaches people how to recognise the warning signs of a suicide crisis in others and how to respond. Participants also learn how to question an individual’s desire or intent regarding suicide, persuade them to seek and accept help, and refer them to appropriate resources. “If a lot of people could do that conversation [ask ‘are you OK’], it would be a great thing,” Ms King said. “I wish somebody had done that for my son.” Details: www.qprinstituteaustralia.com.au/

Ghoulish experience A ghoul’s search for a man in suburbia has helped Sunshine filmmakers and spouses Andrew Robb and Jessica Gerger scoop the fifth annual Altona Beach Film Festival. My Ghoul won both the Best in Festival and People’s Choice awards. This year’s festival theme was ‘journey’ and Robb explains that his wife, playing the central role of the ghoul, hops on a bus in Sunshine to go find a man. “It’s about a lonely ghoul who lives in a big deserted mansion and she has decided to go looking for a man so she steps out into suburbia on that quest,” he said. “Each year, my wife and I make a film for the Sunshine Short Film Festival … we made My Ghoul set in Sunshine – there were Sunshine landmarks peppered throughout the film – for that festival. “We always make a short film for that festival and that then goes on to have another life after that.

“In My Ghoul’s case, it had quite a successful life. It’s been to many different festivals all around Victoria and Australia and the world, including London. “It’s playing at Atlanta in Georgia in the US in a few weeks.” Part of the film was shot along Kororoit Creek at Sunshine, which Gerger is familiar with, as president of Friends of Kororoit Creek. This year’s judging panel included noted documentary maker Wain Fimeri from Altona and past winner Aaron Ellis from Altona Meadows. Festival president Annette Stephens said My Ghoul had been a real crowd-pleaser among a high calibre of entries. “The interpretation of ‘journey’ was amazing … we had horror, comedy, animation, drama; we had everything,” she said. The number of stray and feral cats collected in Brimbank continues to climb. During the 2018-19 financial year the council collected 2091 cats, a sharp increase on the 1724 collected during 2017-18. All cats collected by the council are taken to The Lost Dogs’ Home for assessment and/ or re-homing, unless they’re in need of urgent medical attention,

RSPCA head of operations Tegan McPherson said a lack of desexing was contributing to the northern suburbs’ problem. “The sheer volume of cats and kittens in the area is a problem,” she said. “There is a really low rate of desexing and microchipping of cats and kittens. One undesexed cat and her offspring can have up to 2000 kittens in two years. “It’s just not good welfare when you have got cats roaming with no one to care for them.” A mobile cat desexing clinic will roll into St Albans later this month. New strategy to tackle parking By Tate Papworth

Brimbank council is promising better enforcement methods as it looks for a more co-ordinated approach to tackling the city’s parking woes. The council adopted its first parking strategy during its August meeting and is confident it provides a way to better manage parking across the municipality. The strategy was formed following a community consultation period, where residents highlighted several major issues. Better enforcement of parking breaches was one of the most common concerns. As part of the strategy, the council will better monitor areas where restricted parking is in place. It will also develop a plan to guide staffing requirements, enforcement procedures, use of technology and the selection of priority areas for monitoring. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said the strategy provides a co-ordinated approach to parking. “Parking is a big issue for most councils and communities,” she said. “It’s important council manages parking in a fair manner. I’m sure everyone would agree parking should also be accessible and affordable as well as sustainable. “The strategy will also help us to decide what type and amount of parking is needed.” Issues raised by the community and outlined in a council report included minimum parking requirements for new developments, the poor quality of public transport options in the region and parking around railway stations. The council says parking around train stations is a state government responsibility, but says it plans to write to relevant ministers to discuss parking around train stations and overall transport planning across the City of Brimbank.

Matthew Kerr loves a challenge. A thirst to push himself to the limits prompted him to sign up for the Around the Bay 300 kilometre bike ride. Mr Kerr will join more than 10,000 cyclists from across the country on October 6 and admits it’s going to be a grind. “It’s a personal challenge,” he said. “I’ve previously done the 250km cycle and now they’ve released the 300km cycle so I thought ‘what a way to challenge myself further’. “The 250km is the most I’ve done and that was three years ago. I keep telling people it was the windiest day in Victoria for seven years, so that hurt. “If we have nicer conditions this time around I’m pretty confident we’ll get the job done.” Mr Kerr is a leader at the Smith Family’s Sunshine office and said the chance to raise funds for those doing it tough made any pain worthwhile. “When I think about what the funds we raise go towards – supporting vulnerable families and the education of children – and what they face every day as a constant challenge, what I’m facing is nothing in comparison.” The Smith Family hopes to raise more than $600,000 over the course of the event. Playground for learning About 150 schoolchildren from across Victoria converged at Scienceworks in Spotswood last week for national Kids Teaching Kids Week, sharing knowledge on how to make environmentally sustainable playgrounds. Schools presenting workshops included Deer Park North Primary, Sunshine North Primary, St Albans Meadows Primary and St Anne’s Catholic Primary from Sunbury. Kids Teaching Kids founder Arron Wood said the children investigated ways to make parks and playgrounds more sustainable and ecofriendly. “Topics include rain-catchment systems, renewable energy sources and sustainable landscaping,” he said. “KTK is the leading peer education program

in Australia and is free and available to all Australian schools. “Students are guided to teach each other and present their knowledge of a selected sustainability issue to their peers.” Australia-wide, about 8000 students from 430 schools took part in the week. Kids Teaching Kids’ Danielle Thuringer said the children worked together to design sustainable playground prototypes using the Scienceworks maker’s space and 3D pens. “Schools will be able to bring their playground prototypes back to school to share with their classmates what they learnt and advocate for sustainable playgrounds,” she said. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds an Afghan restaurant making Werribee home We are delighted to see the sort of Afghan food hitherto available in Sunshine and Footscray make its way to Werribee. Lux is a lovely set-up – the dining room sparkles with welcome, the menu covers all the bases (including going beyond charcoal-grilled meats), the prices are almost absurdly low. And the food is grand – so much so the very minor hiccups noted below barely register as any sort of speed bump. Barley chicken soup ($7) is just as homely and satisfying as it looks. It is, though, very plain of flavour – if you’re like us, you’ll be reaching for the salt shaker. Mantu ($13) are superb. The delicate dumplings are festooned with two complementary sauces – a mincey/lentil number and one of minty yoghurt. It’s taken us several years to fully get with the swing of the Afghan take on stews/curries. But now we’re fully there, happily appreciating them in their own right. Lamb qorma ($12) is a doozy – both runny and rich, with plentiful tender meat that falls away from the bones with ease. CTS knows that all of the above food is pre-prepared, so happily accept some reheating is the order of the day. However the soup and mantu are barely warm enough, the qorma not so – it is returned to the kitchen for a blast. Our qorma arrives without rice, so we have to order that extra – and it’s very good. We suspect most Lux customers go for the

Mixed kebab ($14) is a treat of two skewers of classy chicken and one each of cubed and minced lamb. Afghan bread is invariably flamboyantly large that we applaud the Lux move to offer half-size portions – for $1. Full size goes for $2. Lux runs a buffet every Thursday for $25 per person – which sounds like a bloody good deal to us. Going by the clips on the joint’s Facebook page, it’s popular, so booking is advised.

Council is undertaking an Expression of Interest process to identify the most suitable future winter tenant for Bon Thomas Reserve located in Adeline Court, Deer Park. Bon Thomas Reserve comprises two rectangular sports grounds (approx. 120m by 68m) that are suitable for senior and junior level sport. There is Sportsground lighting on both grounds. The soon to be constructed pavilion is approximately 550m2 including social room, meeting room, four change rooms, kitchen, first aid room, storage and umpires room. There is a small playground to the side of the rectangular sports ground and a 64 space car park with lighting. Also on site but not included in this Expression of Interest is an oval with lighting and a sports change room building comprising of two change rooms, umpires room and storage. Councilâ€™s broad aims for Bon Thomas Reserve are: â€˘ To provide a facility to address the demand for winter sport in Brimbank. â€˘ To provide a facility for the development of participation opportunities, especially for females, juniors, newly arrived and cultural diverse communities â€˘ To provide a facility to allow for sporting programs and activities for the wider community with the aim of fostering growth of both formal and informal sport â€˘ To provide a facility that engages with the surrounding Deer Park community through the activities of the tenant sports club â€˘ To maximise use of the site / multipurpose use The Expression of Interest is only open to sports clubs who are interested in occupying Bon Thomas Reserve as the Winter tenant (1 April to September 30) annually on a Seasonal License Agreement. SPORT Thunder’s trademark toughness not enough in grand final

Keilor Thunder players were left dejected after falling at the last hurdle in the Big V basketball women’s state championship. The pain of grand final defeat was etched across the faces of Thunder imports Erin Bollmann and A’Lexus Hamilton, who were shattered not to get their team over the line after playing starring roles all season. The Thunder went down 2-1 to newly promoted Werribee Devils in the best-of-three grand final series that ended at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday. Trailing by a game to nil entering the weekend, a spirited Keilor fought back to take game two on Saturday night, winning 81-75. The Thunder could not repeat the dose on Sunday though, facing a slender deficit most of the way in a 67-61 game three loss. Thunder coach Tom Bandilovski conceded that Werribee deserved its game three win. “Werribee, you’re such a good team, you played very well today and you deserved the win, so congratulations,” he said in his post-match speech.

“[Werribee coach] Reece [Potter], you’ve done a very great job with this team, so credit to you and the coaching staff and all the players.” There is nothing Bandilovski could say to make it better for the Keilor players. Losing a deciding game on your home court is as tough as it gets. Bandilovski stood proud of how Keilor performed in 2019 and how it conducted itself in a sporting fashion throughout the season and a hard-fought grand final series. “My team, I’m so proud of how they played the whole year,” Bandilovski said. “The grand final didn’t go our way, but I’m so proud of how they played and what they have achieved this year, so well done. “All the players, I have to really give them credit.” With the series on the line, Keilor shot a disappointing 29 per cent from the field. The Thunder missed a number of chances they would have drained on another day, but the pressure of the occasion might have got to them.

What kept the Thunder in game three was their trademark toughness in defence. They applied a full court press for most of the series and made life difficult for Werribee. The Thunder’s success on the defensive end was not matched on the offensive end and they paid the price for that. Bollmann finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in game three, but she shot at just 25 per cent. Harrison was immense on the board, but only managed two points at 16 per cent. Aneta Bandilovski scored 15 points, including three threes, and Stephanie Collins was effective inside the paint with nine points, which gave the Thunder some hope, but it was not enough. The Keilor stadium was rocking all weekend. Tom Bandilovski acknowledged the support of the Thunder fans. “I’d like to thank the Keilor Thunder crowd. It was unbelievable [support],” he said. Saints close in on title By Lance Jenkinson St Albans Saints have one hand on the National Premier League Victoria 2 west title. The top-of-the-ladder Saints need only draw their final-round game against Melbourne Victory at Churchill Reserve this Saturday to be crowned champions and earn automatic promotion to NPL top flight. The Saints will confront an in-form Victory side that has played a part in helping the Saints remain on top of the ladder. Saints coach Kruni Razov and his players will not take Victory lightly. “Victory beat [fourth-placed] North Geelong last week and drew with [second-placed] Moreland Zebras today, so we know it’s not an easy task,” he said. “But we’ve put ourselves in a very good position.” St Albans executed a come-from-behind 2-1 win over fellow contender Werribee City at Churchill Reserve on Sunday. The Saints trailed by a goal after 22 minutes following an exquisite counter-attack goal from Werribee City’s Shaun Hodor. It was the difference between the two sides at half-time, but Razov was not panicking. “We were the dominant side,” he said. “It was just keep playing the way we were.” St Albans struck back immediately after the break. Joseph Monek produced a beautiful corner to find the head of Jordan Wilkes, who powered it low and hard into the bottom right corner. The Saints aggressively pursued a winning goal – and that finally came late on in the 89th minute. Monek steered in a free kick to the far post and Marko Bagaric was on hand to square his header to Michael Grgic, who scored the winner with a tap-in. Razov felt his team deserved all three points because of its industrious play in the second half. “I thought we were hungrier,” Razov said. “We took risks and we kept pressing forward to find that winner.” Monek’s two set pieces proved the difference in the game. His form for the Saints in recent weeks has been impressive. “We use him a lot [from the set pieces],” Razov said. “We work on his delivery and we want them whipped in with a bit of vengeance so we can get on to the end of them. Green Gully’s National Premier League Victoria finals campaign was short-lived. The Cavaliers bowed out at the elimination final stage after a 1-0 loss to Bentleigh Greens at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday. The signs were not good early in the game, with key attacking player Matthew Fletcher subbed out with a leg injury. The day got worse for Green Gully just before half-time when Bentleigh’s Daniel Stynes made something out of nothing to curl a first-time shot past Cavaliers goalkeeper Jerrad Tyson, giving the visitors the lead. Green Gully seemed to have a lifeline in the second half when Stynes received a second yellow card and was given his marching orders. The Cavaliers had the benefit of an extra man for 21 minutes in the second half, but could not find an equaliser. The numerical advantage disappeared when Teeboy Kamara saw red for unceremoniously dumping Greens goalkeeper Ryan Scott with a forceful two-handed shove to the chest. Albanvale passes tough test to shore up campaign Albanvale has proven it has the mental toughness to go all the way in the Western Region Football League division 3 finals. The top-ranked Cobras survived an almighty examination from Sunshine Heights in the second semi-final at Pennell Reserve on Saturday to run out 10-point victors. Finals are meant to be hard and grand finals have to be earned, but Cobras coach Andrew Bryson was hoping it was not going to be as tough as this, as it took until deep into time-on of the last quarter for his side to finally break the Heights’ resolve. The Cobras slithered their way into a grand final, where they will face the winner of the preliminary final clash between Sunshine Heights and Glen Orden. “It’s probably more of a feeling of relief than anything else,” Bryson said. “There was no real free flowing moments, it was all just pressure. “It was a fight from the start and right through till the end. “There was happiness to see us get through to the grand final, but at the same time there was relief that we were actually able to get ourselves in front and stay in front.”

Albanvale was staring down the barrel early in the last quarter. The Cobras entered the fourth quarter five points in arrears and then conceded the first two goals of the last quarter to trail by 17. Knowing they had a double chance, the Cobras could have put such a deficit into the too-hard basket, but instead fought their way back into the game for a remarkable win. Bryson knew the Cobras had it in them and the players shared that belief. “One of the things we’ve spoken about all year is our connectedness,” Bryson said. “We’re really wanting to drive each other and that’s what happened in that last quarter. “They kicked the first two goals in the last quarter, but we just found a way to keep coming. “We thought, ‘we’re still a chance here’, we backed ourselves to work through that grind and we kept trusting in each other. “It wasn’t flash, it wasn’t pretty, it was a lot of hard work and working through that grind.” Josh Michetti had a profound influence for Albanvale in the last quarter. The ruckman did it all at the centre bounces and with his follow-up at ground level.

“We were down two on the bench in the last quarter and one of them was our other ruckman,” Bryson said. “Josh rucked the whole last quarter and was phenomenal with his ruck work and his second and third efforts. “I think he took three or four intercept marks. He really stood up.” Daniel Backus performed strongly for Albanvale both in the back pocket and on the wing, getting his hands dirty to win a lot of contested ball. Darren Borg floated across midfield and half-forward and consistently presented an option. Bobby Saric’s four-quarter effort was rewarded with two goals. Saric was one of three Cobras players who kicked two goals, along with Kym Taylor and Dane Thomas. The game-sealing goal was fittingly kicked by Liam Ryan. “He’s been an on-field leader for us all year,” Bryson said. When in need of a boost, Lions coach Marc Bullen turns to Kwame McHarg, one of the great Western Region Football League division 1 finals players of a generation, and tells him to go to work. The move of McHarg to the centre was one of the big reasons why the Lions turned around an 11-point half-time deficit to beat Spotswood in the qualifying final by 30 points at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. “I put my Ferrari in the middle of the ground in the last quarter,” Bullen said. “He just took away stoppage after stoppage with electrifying speed. He was breathtaking again.” McHarg was fully part of a Deer Park side that was scintillating in the second half. The Lions piled on nine goals to two after half-time to run out convincing winners. It was not all good for the Lions. Bullen had to remind a few players of their

responsibilities to the team in the changeroom at half-time. “We were thinking about ourselves rather than the team and I gave them a big spray at half-time,” he said. Jase Perkins copped the biggest wrath from Bullen – and responded in the best possible fashion. The competition’s leading goalkicker finished with five goals. However, Perkins was reported for striking. With a tough contest against minor premier Altona upcoming, Deer Park will do whatever it can to get Perkins off the charge. “We’ll put a good team together to see if we can get him off because he’s such an important player for us,” Bullen said.
