The long line of cars snaking down City Vista Circuit before kick-off was the first sign of a grand opening night for Western United. The A-League side took to the field for its first pre-season friendly before a massive and enthusiatic crowd of 3267. It was a successful night for Western United with its historic first game ending with a hard-earned 4-0 win over state league 1 club Caroline Springs George Cross at City Vista Recreation Reserve. United chief executive officer Maurice Bisetto was overwhelmed by the crowd in attendance on a chilly Thursday night. “It was incredible, it exceeded all expectations,” Bisetto said. “To have 3000-plus here tonight when it was three degrees at one point on a cold Thursday night … I still can’t believe it to be perfectly honest.” With a 35th minute free kick from star import Alessandro Diamanti that turned into a powerfully headed goal from Valentino Yuel, Western United was on the board and on its way. Further goals to Connor Pain, Dylan Pierias and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, completed a perfect start. Coach Mark Rudan was impressed with his team’s performance. “Very early stages, but at this point in time, I’m pretty content with what I saw out there,” Rudan said. Lance Jenkinson

Lifeblood of the club By Tate Papworth The Caroline Springs Football Club community is rolling up its sleeves and donating blood to give thanks for a mate’s life being saved. Mitch McLean, a member of the club’s senior side, was horrifically injured in a marking contest during a June 15 match against Werribee. McLean suffered internal bleeding and had his right kidney removed after the incident. Caroline Springs Football Club vice president Matt Kropman said blood donations saved the young player’s life.

“Mitch has recovered well and has returned to work now, but during his five-day stay in hospital, Mitch was given multiple units of life-saving whole blood,” Mr Kropman said. “So we as a community really wanted to do something to give back.” Last Monday, 10 senior players from the men’s and women’s sides, along with club officials, rolled up their sleeves and donated blood. “It was a really successful night,” Mr Kropman said. “I guess part of it was to say thanks and give back, but we also wanted to attract new donors. We had seven new donors on the night and

we’ve also had a number who couldn’t make it on the night who have since donated. Mitch is also really keen to donate. He’s got to wait a few months before he’s able to.” Mr Kropman said support from other clubs had also been overwhelming. “We were playing against Werribee on the day and we’ve even had some people from them share how they’ve donated,” he said. “I gave blood myself and just a few days later I got a text saying it had been used on a patient at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, so it just shows how quickly it’s needed.” Donate: donateblood.com.au

Cash splash for Sunshine pool By Tate Papworth Brimbank council will put an unbudgeted amount of up to $250,000 towards upgrading a master plan to remodel the Sunshine Leisure Centre. The council, which has failed to attract funding for its $60 million redevelopment at the St Albans Leisure Centre, plans to upgrade the Sunshine site to the tune of $35 million. A master plan was put forward for adoption during the council’s August meeting, however Cr John Hedditch said it needed more work.

“This particular issue is one that has vexed us since the master planning project came around,” he said. “We’ve had the process run with the knowledge that there may be some significant additional components that could be added to this facility into the future, like a community hub or a maternal and child health service. “All just discussion points, but those sorts of things are floating in the ether and they haven’t been addressed in scenarios in this master planning process and there are opportunities for further development of the

site if those particular issues were taken on board. “This is a valued site and it’s a real issue to be standing here and saying, having been through a master planning process, we should actually do a little bit more work on this. “We need to consider further the opportunities for significant and proper development of the site.” A divided council passed the alternate motion. The adopted plan flagged more indoor water space, more gym space, and an indoor water play area.

Mayor Lucinda Congreve said the redevelopment was much-needed. “Sunshine Leisure Centre attracts more than 330,000 people through its doors each year,” she said. “It was last redeveloped in 2007, but it’s small and it’s important we have a plan in place for how it can be improved and expanded in the future. “We now have a master plan we are confident reflects what the community wants, and what the community will need as it continues to grow.”

End of the road for McGrath Place A Sunshine North street will be renamed, paying homage to the area’s large Vietnamese population. Brimbank council is set to lodge papers with the Registrar of Geographic Names to rename McGrath Place to Ben Thanh Place. The council says the current name is non-compliant with a council rule which states that in metropolitan urban areas, names must not duplicate another within five kilometres. McGrath Street, Sunshine and McGrath Close, Kealba both fall within a five kilometre distance of McGrath Place. It is deemed that the close proximity of the similarly named streets could put emergency service responses at risk and create confusion for mail services. The council first proposed the name change in March and put plans out for public consultation. Five submissions were received, four opposed to the renaming and one in favour. Objectors to the proposal said the name should be unique to Brimbank and reflect the municipality’s history. However the council said the contribution of the Vietnamese community to Brimbank was important to the history of the area. There is currently one property at McGrath Place, but 13 units are currently being developed on the site. The name Ben Thanh Place was proposed by the developer of the property and comes from a notable market located in Ho Chi Minh City. Ben Thanh roughly translates to Wharf Citadel.

Caroline Springs songbird flies Fourteen years of hard work have paid off for Caroline Springs singer Stephanie Angelini – her debut album is released this week. Angelini recently flew to Los Angeles to record the album with American producer and songwriter Preston Glass, who has worked with artists such as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Lionel Richie. She was given eight weeks to learn a dozen songs written by Glass and fellow songwriter Joe Mandica. The album, Life Lessons, took a week to record.

Angelini said creating the album required total dedication and passion. “Once completed, my team and I sifted through the songs and decided eight would make it on the album,” she said. “We then added a couple more original tunes, a remix and a cover of a Patsy Cline classic. “I had great support behind me so I knew this album was something special.” Angelini began singing and performing in school musicals 14 years ago before progressing to amateur theatre. She then began training

with Young Talent Time’s Jamie Redfern before being selected to sing the theme tune for Neighbours in 2013. Since then, Angelini has been performing around Melbourne. She hopes the album will allow her to perform around the world. “I hope this album reaches the lives of many people, heals a broken heart, fuels a fire to a budding romance and empowers all,” she said. Nine years for Truganina deaths By Esther Lauaki An unlicensed drunk driver who caused a Truganina crash that killed two children will serve at least nine years in prison. Damian Tiahaiere Rakatau, 42, was driven home to Rockbank from a rugby club function in Melton South in July last year after drinking 25 cans of Double Jack, a mixture of Jack Daniels and cola. At close to midnight, Rakatau took his partner’s car and drove along the Western Freeway.

Court documents said witnesses noticed him driving erratically around midnight on July 7, travelling up to 115km/h along Hopkins Road in Truganina. The Ford Territory Rakatau was driving collided head-on with a Ford Fiesta sedan carrying a family of four. Ruana Panicker, 10, and her brother Immanuel, 4, died from their injuries. The children’s parents were both injured in the crash and the mother, Manju Varughese, is unable to return to work. Rakatau was jailed at the County Court last

week for 13 years with a minimum non-parole period of nine years. Judge Sarah Dawes revealed that since being remanded in custody after the incident last year, Rakatau’s long-term partner suffered a heart attack and died in a car accident. Judge Dawes said Rakatau had had no contact with anyone outside prison since his partner’s death and his depression had been aggravated by the loss. “In the words of your counsel, you accept that the blame for this accident lies at your own feet,” she said in her judgment.

Rakatau had never held a valid driver’s licence and had been found guilty of unlicensed driving on five previous occasions. “Your driving was grossly negligent, compounded by your drunkenness,” Judge Dawes said. “The sentence that I will ultimately impose is in no way a reflection of the value of the children’s lives.” Rakatau pleaded guilty to two counts of culpable driving causing death and single counts of negligently causing serious injury and unlicensed driving.

Light work in Cairnlea Cairnlea Park Primary School pupils are illuminating new opportunities for children living along the Kokoda Track. In a first for the school, grade 6 pupils have built solar-powered lights that will be sent to Papua New Guinea so children are able to read and study when the sun goes down. Cairnlea Park Primary School principal Mark Mills said the lights would make a lasting impact. “We are all fortunate in that we can just turn the lights on at night time when we want to do our homework or read a book,” he said. “Our students learnt about the 1.4 billion people around the world who don’t have access to modern electricity.” The pupils built 50 lights under the guidance of Origin Foundation volunteers. Origin Foundation volunteering program manager Ruth Lee said such efforts were always rewarding.

“Origin volunteers find it incredibly rewarding to see the impact STEM education has on these school students as they become global citizens for a day, discovering how simple renewable energy technologies can make a real difference to energy poverty,” Ms Lee said. Since August last year, nearly 2000 Australian students across 30 schools have built more than 1000 solar lights. PSOs make arrest

Protective Service Officers arrested a man after a failed robbery in Sunshine last week. Police said a 28-year-old Sunshine North man was walking along Harvester Road about 11.40pm when he was approached by a man who made demands for his mobile phone. When the victim refused, he was punched in the back of the head. PSOs took chase following a sighting and a 21-year-old man of no fixed address was apprehended and arrested. He has been charged with attempted robbery, intentional cause injury and unlawful assault.

Major Road Projects Victoria presented Ted Whitten jnr and Western Bulldogs chief executive Ameet Bains with framed photos of the recently upgraded EJ Whitten Bridge. Signage at the bridge commemorating the career and legacy of EJ Whitten has proved a hit with motorists. do to continue honoring his legacy should be celebrated. “We’re proud to honour EJ Whitten’s memory by displaying his iconic image for drivers to see every time they cross the bridge.” Ted Whitten jnr said events such as the upcoming AFL Legends game were important for raising awareness. “It’s estimated that more than 19,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in Australia this year, so we need to keep doing everything we can to raise awareness of this disease and funds for research,” he said. A Brooklyn meat processing company has been convicted and fined $90,000 after a worker’s hand was amputated. JBS Australia pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates Court to failing, so far as is reasonably practicable, to provide a safe working environment that was without risk to health.

Grim view on Calder congestion By Tate Papworth The Calder Freeway will become Melbourne’s second most congested road during morning peaks by 2031, according to a report by Infrastructure Australia. The report states the freeway is struggling to meet demand from outer growth areas and in 2016 was the seventh most congested road in Melbourne during morning peak periods and ninth in evening peak. By 2031, the Calder is expected to be the second most congested road in the morning

peak and the third most congested in the evenings. Brimbank council has long held concerns about the freeway. Mayor Lucinda Congreve believes upgrades are desperately needed. “Council welcomed the federal government’s commitment to fund up to $50 million to upgrade the Calder, but if we are serious about the needs of the communities in Australia’s fastest-growing region, we need action and real dollars,” she said. “We need modern and reliable

infrastructure. At a recent meeting I had with Federal Minister for Cities and Population, Alan Tudge, I highlighted that local, state and federal government have to come together to help address congestion across the west.” Cr Congreve said it was vital the Calder was up to scratch by the time construction on the Sunshine Super Hub began. “The Melbourne Airport Rail Link and the Sunshine Super Hub projects have the potential to radically improve transport connections across Melbourne,” she said. “It is critical that we get a working group established to

look at job, business and social procurement opportunities during the construction and post construction for this project. “We want an integrated transport plan for the west that considers all of the actions needed to get the west moving. “If we get these projects, in particular the precinct work around the Sunshine Super Hub, right we can become the capital of the west in terms of business, jobs, education, and social opportunities. “Plain and simple, more jobs in Sunshine will mean less congestion.”

Seniors fest on a roll One of Brimbank’s most popular events promises to be bigger and better in 2019. The Brimbank Seniors Festival will run through October and ticket allocations are already being organised for the most popular events. The lunch and dance will this year be held at a new venue, Sheldon Reception and Convention Centre in Sunshine West. To make sure tickets are distributed fairly, this year’s allocation will be drawn by ballot. The ballot can be filled out online from Monday, September 2, and will remain open until Sunday, September 15. Successful applicants will be notified by October 2. There’s plenty of other festival events. Barefoot bowls and barbecue will be rolled out at Delahey Community Centre on October 10. Participants will be taught bowls rudiments

before enjoying a game or two and a sausage sizzle. Fitness, dancing, cooking classes and a variety of other activities will run throughout the festival at various locations. In one cooking class, six cooks will feature in a demonstration, giving the audience a unique opportunity to get up close and ask questions in an intimate setting. Council joins airport think-tank By Tate Papworth Brimbank council will fork out almost $13,000 to join a coalition of councils impacted by airports. The council will join the Australian Mayoral Aviation Council (AMAC), an organisation that meets annually to seek advice from experts and others in relation to airport operations and the impact on adjacent cities. to review plans for a third runway, with a north-south alignment now being considered. A north-south alignment would bring increased traffic over areas of Brimbank. Cr Margaret Giudice said despite the high cost, the membership would be a useful resource. “I had my concerns about this, but I’ve since done some homework on it and I think that considering the issues we are now having with Melbourne Airport, it would be an important forum for council to express concerns to the aviation council about the community

concerns at the moment, but also it would be a great source of deriving information.” Cr Bruce Lancashire disagreed and questioned the value the group would provide. “I have some concerns over the very high costs over this. Nearly $13,000 then potentially another $3000,” he said. “I just wonder about the value given we have a notice of motion and other avenues with the airport. “We’ve already resolved that we will have an agreement with the airport in terms of consulting with them, we seem to be doing a

lot in that area … And I think we’re already getting a lot of information out of that. “I’m not too sure this is going to add a lot to that. It doesn’t sound like the sort of forum that you would present at, it sounds like a bit of a talk fest.” A division was called, but the council passed the recommendation to join. A notice of motion put forward by Cr Virginia Tachos also called for a noise monitoring unit to be reinstalled in Keilor Village and for information provided to the council regarding noise mitigation measures.

Grants take flight Hundreds of new migrants and disadvantaged young people are set to benefit from a Melbourne Airport cash splash. The airport recently announced 10 winners of its community grants program. They will share in $100,000 of funding. Brimbank recipients include Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House, Sydenham Neighbourhood House and Duke Street Community House. Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said he was delighted to be able to support meaningful community projects operating on the airport’s doorstep. “I am extremely proud to provide the 10 neighbourhood houses with the funding, giving them the ability to extend or improve their established initiatives that impact the lives of those that need it most,” he said. “As an airport, we can help support the community in which we operate in … we’re

Cr Bob Turner It’s been a year since Council launched its Build Melton Hospital campaign in the lead up to the 2018 state election, so I thought it was timely to provide an update on this important project for our community. More than 20,000 people signed the hospital petition, so it was fantastic to see the State Government allocate $2.4 million in its 2019/20 budget to prepare a business case.

It’s been a busy time at Council with many projects included in the 2019/20 budget getting underway.

I was thrilled to see that significant investment in road and sports infrastructure in Watts Ward is a feature of this year’s budget, including $2.5 million for the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Taylors Road and Westwood Drive and construction of a pedestrian crossing nearby. This much-anticipated project is one that I have strongly advocated for, having first raised the project as a Notice of Motion. This is a wonderful outcome for residents, with these works set to significantly improve road and pedestrian safety in the area. Another project in this year’s budget is the design for upgrade works at Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve. This exciting project will see the realignment

commence by July 2022 and for the hospital to be operational by 2026. Another important advocacy project I’d like to mention is the Upgrade Western Highway campaign. I was pleased to learn the campaign was recently raised in Federal Parliament by both the Member for Gorton, Hon Brendan O’Connor MP and the Shadow Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Regional Development, Hon Catherine King MP. Last week, I met with Catherine King about this nationally significant project and we had a positive discussion about how we can progress our campaign to upgrade the Western Highway, in the City of Melton. School site in council sights By Tate Papworth Brimbank council wants answers from the state government about what will soon become another unused school site. As previously reported in Star Weekly Weekly, Sunshine College will undergo a major redevelopment, consolidating its four campuses to two. The plans will mean the school will no longer use its Graham Street campus in Sunshine. Cr John Hedditch said the site needed to remain an education and training venue. “The Sunshine Secondary College senior campus in Graham Street is a well-known local school campus,” he said. “It’s a beautiful site – it has an old historic art-deco building and has been a place of education and training for many generations. We understand, with the transformation of Sunshine College … that the sale of this site and the south site in Glengala Road are imminent. “This particular site in Graham Street is one of strategic importance going forward. It is a site located close to the upcoming transport super hub, it’s a place where education is already provided, it’s a place where the community sees future education and training.” The council and state government have recently disagreed over the sale of Brimbank school sites, notably Calder Rise Primary School. The Calder Rise site was sold to a private developer for $8.2 million in May. The buyer plans to turn it into an aged-care facility. The council and government both said it should stay in the community, but could not agree on who should pay for it. The council will write to several government ministers requesting an update on its intention for the future of the Graham Street site and to emphasise its importance to Brimbank.

The wonders of space and science have been celebrated at Copperfield College. Students at the school’s Sydenham campus created science experiments, built robots and printed models on 3D printers for the annual science fair on August 23. The theme for this year’s fair was the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Science co-ordinator Faryal Niazi said about 30 groups of students took part. “The students have been working really hard on their projects for a long time,” she said, Pupils from nearby primary schools were invited to attend the fair and Copperfield College’s Vex Robotics club showcased the robots built for the Vex Robotics world championships in Kentucky in April. As Keilor East man David Cammarata got out of his car on his way to work on August 19, he saw a man staring at him from the street. It didn’t take long for him to realise he was face-to-face with the former school friend who had allegedly stalked and attacked him with a hammer outside his home almost exactly a year ago. The man was also Victoria’s most wanted fugitive, Jonathan Dick, sought by police over the alleged killing of his brother David with a sword in 2017. “He was just watching me,” said Mr Cammarata. “I don’t know what his plans were but he was just looking and must have been planning something for when I came to work.” It was a heart-stopping moment for Mr Cammarata, who for a year had been on high alert, constantly looking over his shoulder and taking measures to protect himself and his family while Mr Dick remained on the run. But last Monday, Mr Cammarata’s cousin and colleague from Diamondline Jewellery, Dion Raiola, arrived at the Flinders Street carpark at the same time, about 7.40am. Both had also parked on the ground floor. “It was pure coincidence, usually we get to work within about 20 minutes of each other,” Mr Cammarata said. “And I never park on the ground and I happened to park there.” Together, they chased Mr Dick, restraining him until police arrived and arrested him as blood poured down his face. It brought an end to a manhunt which had

lasted for more than two and a half years. It has since emerged that Mr Dick had been living in a tent in Fitzroy and stealing from community gardens while evading capture. “There was no way we would let him get away,” Mr Cammarata told The Age last week. “He was trying to get away and we basically did what we had to do to keep him still.” Mr Dick has since been charged with the murder of his brother David. Last Tuesday morning, he was charged with the attempted murder of Mr Cammarata on August 23 in Keilor, and accused of stalking Mr Cammarata by following him and loitering near his place of work. Mr Cammarata – father of three young boys – is now hugely relieved to be back at work and ready to get back to normal life. “Everyone is [relieved], the boys were super happy last night, jumping around everywhere,” he said.

Freight, truck fears for Brimbank By Tate Papworth There are fears the development of a Western Interstate Freight Terminal (WIFT) could significantly impact Brimbank. Cr John Hedditch tabled a motion during Brimbank council’s August meeting, calling for details of all possible freight routes and for details surrounding noise, emissions and other impacts on amenity, livability and health and wellbeing for impacted communities. “The WIFT is a project that is dear to people in the west’s hearts,” he said. “We have a

particular issue getting freight from the ports away from the city. Trucks are a major issue. “This is a complex project, but it’s a project that brings freight through this city. “It also connects freight to the inland and national rail project, which would see all sorts of trains running eventually along the freight lines – trains that can range from 1.8 to 3.6 kilometres in length, double-decker container trains which have significant weight and have a lot of issues with noise and dust that go with them.” According to the Victorian Department of

Transport website: “The proposed Western Interstate Freight Terminal will include the construction of an interstate rail freight terminal and warehousing precinct at Truganina in Melbourne’s west and a rail link to the interstate rail freight network.”

Cr Hedditch wants Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne to meet the council and provide clarity around routes and impact mitigation strategies. “There are general concerns that should the route, as anticipated, travel through the various parts of Brimbank – from Tottennham in Maribyrnong, right through Sunshine, West Sunshine, Albion, Ardeer, Deer Park and out through Derrimut – that it will be a very big impact on local community … I guess we’re keen to understand what that might mean in terms of route.”

Keilor school turns 40 From small things, big things have grown in Keilor. In 1979, St Augustine’s Primary School opened its doors with 93 students and seven staff. Now, celebrating its 40th anniversary, the school has 255 students and 36 staff. School principal Cathy Steere said that while the school had evolved, it has always stayed true to its beginnings. “It was always considered an unusual location for a school as we are built on the edge of a hill that drops down into the gully beside Taylor’s Creek,” she said. “But it really has the feel of an urban school in a rural setting. What was considered a challenge 40 years ago has become our blessing as we reconnect with nature and look for opportunities in environmental studies. “We have always been a close community school, that hasn’t changed over the years.

We have many parents and grandparents who attended the school with their own children now attending. “Over the 40 years, we have seen many changes, including building additions in the library, hall and admin block. “We have also seen the school progress from just pen and paper to excelling in technology with a strong STEM program, including us being robotic champions over the past years.” The school has marked its anniversary with an art show and a family bush dance, which Ms Steere said was a great opportunity to bring the community together. MY BRIMBANK Matthew Williams has been shaping young minds at Cairnlea Park Primary School for the past decade. He chats with Tate Papworth about Brimbank and the evolution of education. What’s your connection to Brimbank. I grew up in the western suburbs. I’ve lived here my whole life. I’m originally from Melton, so after completing university, I knew I wanted to continue working in the area I grew up in. What’s kept you around? I love the area. All the kids at the school here are really good, it’s close to home and there’s everything we need out here. Speaking about Cairnlea specifically, I really like the multiculturalism. It’s a really friendly place to work. Is there anything you think could be done better? Not really. It’s such a unique, great place. Everything seems to be going along really well. Tell us about your role at the school. I’m currently a grade 6 teacher. I’ve been here about 10 years. I’m just a general classroom teacher, but we also help out with things around the school. We’ve got a big focus on writing, literacy and things like that … we’re really big on school and community engagement. How’s the school changed in your time here? We used to be a smaller school over in Deer Park. We had about 150 kids and now here in Cairnlea we have about 850 … with all the new development, I think we’ll be growing for a while. (Luke Hemer)

A mounting public campaign to get more funds for emergency relief for families in distress is under way in Sunshine. The campaign is being guided by the Western Region Emergency Relief committee which is advising all agencies and individuals to write to Senator Guilfoyle, with a copy to a number of ministers, the Prime Minister and local members of Parliament.

A Toorak company plans to build one of Australia’s largest sporting and entertainment complexes at Deer Park. Perpetual Finance Pty Ltd, run by property developer Frank Kubis, has State Planning and Environment Ministry approval for a double-storey “sports city” and office complex on 8.3 hectares of industrial land, near the Western Hwy and Robinsons Rd in the Shire of Melton.

A group of Keilor residents are in disbelief over what they claim has been the secret sale of part of Brimbank Park.

People power has forced Brimbank Council to abandon plans to develop Errington Reserve in St Albans for a proposed new civic centre.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is looking forward to Cafe Sunshine’s future Consider the Sauce has observed, on the Cafe Sunshine Facebook page, a very nice looking falafel plate being spruiked. A dish that isn’t on the menu when we visit. And the dishes enjoyed on two previous solo visits by CTS senior are no longer on the current menu either. Cafe Sunshine and SalamaTea is a newish operation right in the heart of Sunshine. If they’re still finding their feet, some menu tinkering is for sure in order. Even better, I suspect new and surprising dishes will continue to pop up here with regularity, depending on the whims and passions of whoever is in the kitchen and what is available from the joint’s suppliers. This will suit anyone prepared to go with the freewheeling flow of the place. Perhaps not so much those who expect a menu to be a menu and that’s that. That would very much be their loss – for the food here is rather wonderful, provides a distinct point of difference in Sunshine and is ultra-affordable. As well, the place is also very much about providing employment and more for refugees and asylum seekers. The simple fare is largely of Persian nature, with eggs the big players, in a warm and welcoming cafe. And I’m told evening meals are in the soon-come category. Bennie likes his Persian breakfast ($13) very much – including the tahini dip flavoured with

Also included are fig jam, butter and a concoction of walnut and sheep feta. All this is teamed with Afghan flat bread sourced from the Afghan bakery that has opened up just around the corner on Hampshire Road. I share the same basket of bread – more is happily supplied upon request – with my Persian omelette ($15). This is simple and sensational – eggs and feta sent into the dizzy heights by the plethora of fresh mint and other herbs on the side. The vegan baklava ($3) does show the absence of butter – it’s drier than regular baklava – but is still enjoyable, as are our $3.50 cafe lattes.

SPORT Westside Saints finally triumph on the big stage Painful memories of consecutive one-goal grand final losses for the Westside Saints have been soothed after they broke through to triumph this year. The Saints, a representative team out of the St Albans Caroline Springs Netball Association (SACSNA), scooped the 2019 under-17 state association title with a 19-13 win over Ovens and Murray in the grand final. Tracy Wallace, who coached the Saints in the heartbreaking grand finals of the past two years before handing over the reins to Darren Abela, was ecstatic to finally get the job done. “It’s a different bunch of girls this year, but I’m the coach that had them for those two years that they lost, so it was kind of a relief to see them get the win,” she said. “They knew that we came runners-up the two years before and how much it meant for the club to get the win. We’re the best under-17s in Victoria, so it’s a massive achievement.”

The SACSNA is one of the biggest netball associations in the state. The elite 13 players who came together to form the under-17 representative team were chosen from 18 clubs within the association.

The team had two unbreakable qualities – strong camaraderie and competitiveness. “They’re definitely competitive,” Wallace said with a chuckle. “They were playing for sheep stations and they knew what it meant for the club to achieve that. “They’re just an amazing bunch of girls and they will have a special bond for the rest of their lives after what they achieved together.” It was a long road to the top for the Westside Saints. The Saints qualified for the state titles after finishing runners-up in the Central West region. After losing to Wyndham in the Central West decider, Westside Saints exacted some revenge on the big stage at the states with a 23-7 win in the semi-finals. A nail-biting 13-11 win over Hampden in the preliminary final secured the Saints spot in the

grand final in which they got redemption for the past two years. Akira McCormack took out the best-on-court award in the grand final win over Ovens and Murray. Ariana Luamanu, Kalolaine Moimoi and Mia Lucas were super consistent over the tournament. A coach at Westside Saints and a game development officer with Netball Victoria, Wallace is keenly promoting the sport in Brimbank, Melton and the surrounding suburbs. She is urging netballers keen to play to get in touch with the SACSNA. “Our association is one of the most successful in the state, but when I go into schools to promote the game, not a lot of kids know about us,” Wallace said. Thunder off to a bad start

United’s dazzling debut By Lance Jenkinson Western United has lift-off thanks to a 4-0 victory over Caroline Springs George Cross in its first pre-season friendly at City Vista Recreation Reserve on Thursday night. The A-League’s newest club faced stern resistance in the first 35 minutes before young striker Valentino Yuel broke the deadlock with a powerful headed goal. Yuel was the beneficiary of a centimetre-perfect cross from United’s marquee import, Alessandro Diamanti. The longer the game went on, the greater the Western United threat became. As the Caroline Springs George Cross players started to tire, holes opened up in their defence and United was able to break through four times. Connor Pain doubled the United lead just before half-time with a tap-in. It was a well-deserved goal for Pain, who had worked tirelessly on the left wing in the first half. Youngster Dylan Pierias, a Caroline Springs resident who got his start at Keilor Park in the juniors, fired in a jaw-droppingly fearsome shot that gave the goalkeeper no chance. Apostolos Stamatelopoulos put the icing on the cake of a four-goal win when he pounced on a goalkeeping error for an easy goal. At this stage of the pre-season, the result does not usually matter, but when you want to make a good first impression in front of 3267 spectators, there is a little bit more to play for. Western United coach Mark Rudan was particularly impressed by his team’s ability to transfer what they learned from study sessions and training track and apply it on the pitch in their first ever competitive game. “You never know how players are going to take all the messages and instructions that we’ve given them in an official game capacity,” Rudan said. “For the majority of the game, the attitude was good, the effort was certainly there and their discipline was really good as well.” But Rudan believes the team only scratched the surface of the style of play he wants implemented for the A-League season.

“We make no apologies about the demands we place on our players,” Rudan said. “That’s just one [game] and we want to build on that and keep progressing.” You could not wipe the smile from the face of Western United midfielder Josh Cavallo, a former Melbourne City youth player, after the game. The 19-year-old could not believe the amount of green and black in the crowd. “I was surprised by the turnout tonight – I was really impressed,” he said. “It was great to get all the fans behind us.” Western United chief executive officer Maurice Bisetto ticked off a successful night, enjoyed it for a few hours and got back to work in preparation for United’s next pre-season friendly – against Preston Lions at City Vista Recreation Reserve on Thursday at 7pm. “We don’t want to be a one-hit wonder – we want to have albums, we want to have a history and we want to leave a legacy,” he said. “I’ll be driving home tonight thinking how we can make next week better and the week after better and have a sustainable future for our fans.”

Keilor Thunder will have to go back to the drawing board to find a way back into its best-of-three Big V women’s state championship grand final series with Werribee Devils. The Thunder hit the road for game one last Saturday night and were out-played for most of the match in a 77-64 defeat at Eagle Stadium. The Tom Bandilovski-coached Thunder was slow out the blocks, trailing by eight at quarter-time. They breathed life into the match with a big second quarter to restore parity by half-time but their second half was one to forget. They could not get their offense in motion and paid the price as the Devils out-scored them 36-23 in a lopsided half. Erin Bollmann was the pick of the Keilor players on a tough night. The star import claimed game-highs with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Aneta Bandilovski scored 13 points for the Thunder, while A’Lexus Harrison added 10. Ellen Kett had a solid game with five points, five assists and five rebounds. The bad news for Keilor is that it is down a game in the series. The good news is that it returns home for games two and three of the series. The Thunder has a positive 6-3 home record this season. However, they are facing one of the stronger road teams in the league in Werribee, which has an impressive 8-1 record in away games. Game two will be on Saturday night at the Keilor Basketball Stadium at 7.30pm, while game three, if required, will be at the same venue on Sunday from 2pm. Lance Jenkinson

Deer Park roars into finals after nailing double chance

Deer Park’s bid for a seventh consecutive Western Region Football League division 1 premiership has received a boost after it secured a double chance in the finals. The Lions needed only to win their final round game against Point Cook, but they left nothing to chance with a massive 136-point victory at John McLeod Oval on Saturday. The Marc Bullen-coached Lions piled on 26 goals for the game, including a seven-goal-to-one first quarter. Chris Stewart was menacing as a key forward, booting seven goals. Stewart has booted 39 goals this season. Kwame McHarg capped a best-on-ground performance for Deer Park with five goals. Jase Perkins snared three goals to take his season tally to a league-best 71 for the home-and-away rounds. Deer Park faces a juicy qualifying final showdown with Spotswood at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. The winner will face Altona in the semi-finals for a direct path to the grand final.

The elimination final will take place between Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Districts on Sunday at Avalon Airport Oval. Elsewhere in division 1, St Albans had a disappointing finish to an otherwise successful season under first-year coach Perry Meka. The Saints could manage only two goals in a 97-point mauling at the hands of Altona. Albion’s season of misery is finally over after a 218-point loss to Hoppers Crossing. Caroline Springs endured a tough day at the office, kicking two goals in a 127-point thumping by Spotswood. Sunshine fought hard against Werribee Districts before going down by 48 points. In division 3, Albanvale has won the minor premiership after plenty of jockeying between the leading contenders over the 18 rounds. The Cobras locked up the top ranking in the finals with a comfortable 76-point win away to Laverton. By Tara Murray It was a bitterly disappointing end to the season for Keilor in the Essendon District Football League Women’s premier division grand final. While the Blues came in with premiership dreams, they will remember the game as more of a nightmare. The Blues were held scoreless in the 5-10 (40)-0.0 (0) loss. Blues coach Ron Sikora said it was a bitter pill to swallow not being able to even hit the scoreboard. “In patches I reckon we were better than them and we moved the ball well,” he said. “Just the difference between being proactive and reactive, and the case of it being mentally with the girls when we come up against Abers. “It’s something they will have to overcome.” It was a relatively even first quarter and Aberfeldie lead by eight points at the siren. Sikora said they made one mistake which cost them, but otherwise he was happy at quarter-time. It then started to go wrong for the Blues, as they struggled to get the ball forward. Sikora said they went into their shells. “We did things we said we weren’t going to do, it was frustrating,” he said. “We had the wind for the second quarter and they were able to control it … we went defensive, and it doesn’t work. “We had patches of being attacking and moving the ball well, we had a few things that could have gone either way, didn’t go our way and it didn’t help us mentally. “I’m sure there will be a few minds, thinking what might have been.” The Blues had their best period of the game early in the last quarter but couldn’t score. He said some of their star players did not step up when needed. Sikora said Jessie Cameron was their best player, moving on to Sophie Cachia deep in defence. Eleanor Cornish, Shenay Thomas, Sarah Cachia and Isabella Rowland were also good performers. Alexandra Volk, who got a late call-up to play an hour before the game, was another who played well. Sikora said Volk’s attitude, despite not originally being picked in the team, was outstanding. While disappointing, Sikora said overall it was an achievement to make the grand final. “I took on the job on, two weeks before we got into it,” he said. “We had 43 players going through the list for the year. “I think all in all, it was a good achievement to make the grand final.” Shaney Thomas looks to get a kick away.

Brimbank Bucks did not get the fairytale ending they envisaged in the Rugby Victoria premiership. The Bucks felt heartbreak on the biggest day on the calender, losing 22-7 to Eltham in the grand final at Sparks Reserve on Saturday. But it has nevertheless been a season to remember for Bucks coach Tia Suemai and his team, who took the competition by storm in their first season. The Bucks beat Eltham in week one of the finals, but could not repeat that feat on the big stage.

Green Gully will start its NPL finals journey with an elimination final against Bentleigh Greens on home soil at Green Gully Reserve. The Cavaliers have been one of the hottest teams in the competition since July, but they ended the regular season with a disappointing 3-0 loss to Oakleigh Cannons at Jack Edwards Reserve on Sunday. In NPL Women’s, Calder United, which has already secured the premier plate, suffered a rare loss, beaten 2-1 by FC Bulleen Lions.

Inspirational captain Lucas Rocci has become the Western Jets’ first Morrish Medal winner for best-and-fairest in the NAB League. Rocci took out the highest individual honour in the competition with 17 votes, three clear of Sandringham captain Ryan Byrnes. It was a super Sunday for the Jets after they won their wildcard game over Greater Western Victoria Rebels by 50 points. Archi Manton produced a stellar game for the Jets with four goals.
